Children experience many firsts as they make their way through infancy and into childhood. Parents often remember their child’s first word and the day they took their first step, as both are major milestones in youngsters’ lives. One of the most memorable firsts children experience is their first day of kindergarten. Though many youngsters now attend daycare and/ or preschool before beginning kindergarten, the first day of kindergarten is still something special for both children and their parents. As the big day approaches, children about to begin kindergarten may experience a range of emotions, including excitement, anticipation and even a little anxiety or nervousness. Parents can help their children manage such emotions by taking various steps to make the first day of kindergarten as fun as possible. The first day of kindergarten is a milestone. Parents can employ various strategies to calm any nerves kids may have as the big day approaches. REQUEST A CLASS LIST. Some schools may not provide a class list and some will. Parents who can access the class list can go over the list with their children before the start of school. Doing so can lessen youngsters’ anxiety as they will no doubt recognize a few familiar names on the list. Knowing friends will be in class alongside them will no doubt make kids more excited for their first day.

I’ll have to grow up and work hard. I’ll be a farmer at my dad’s house.

DISCUSS ACTIVITIES WITH SCHOOL OFFICIALS, INCLUDING TEACHERS. Some kids may not be nervous about going to kindergarten, but might not be looking forward to the end of summer. In such instances, reaching out to teachers and/or other school officials to learn what kids will be doing in kindergarten can help. Discuss first-day and early-year activities with teachers and then share that information with kids. Once kids learn how much fun they’ll be having in kindergarten, they might be less reluctant to say goodbye to summer. LET YOUNGSTERS CHOOSE THEIR CLOTHES FOR THE FIRST DAY. When shopping for first-dayof-school attire, let kids choose their own outfits, explaining to them that the first day of kindergarten is a special day worthy of new clothes. Once the big day arrives, kids may forget their nerves and just be excited to get dressed and show off their new duds, especially if they’re wearing clothes they handpicked themselves. ATTEND A SCHOOL ORIENTATION DAY. If your child’s school hosts a student/family orientation day, be sure to attend. Orientation will give kids a chance to see their classroom and meet fellow students as well as their teacher. That familiarity can calm kids’ nerves on the first day.

Education is Central. Our goal is to ensure that every Kindergartener feels safe, cared about, and excited when they come to school each day. Some of our themes that we will cover throughout the year in Kindergarten: Fall Festival • Fire Safety • Thanksgiving Feast Holiday Party • 100th Day • Valentine’s Day St. Patrick’s Day • Dental Health • Community Service Project

Know your child is ready for class Kindergarten can be a pivotal time in a young child’s life. Although many kids attend preschool or receive guided learning at home, kindergarten marks students’ first official foray into the classroom. This is an exciting time for kids and parents, and also one that may be fraught with nerves. That is especially true for parents who are not quite sure if their children are ready to begin their academic careers. While many school districts mandate that students must be at least five years old to begin kindergarten, age is not the only factor to consider when gauging kids’ readiness for school. Child-education experts note that there is no single factor that determines kids’ readiness for school, but rather there is a host of factors that, when taken together, can help parents determine if their youngster is ready for the rigors of the classroom. The following are some factors parents can consider as they try to determine if their children are ready to enroll in kindergarten. • Separation anxiety: Does your child handle separation well, or is he or she prone to meltdowns each time you leave for even a short period of time? School requires kids to spend several hours away from home and away from their parents, and parents might need to take steps to increase young-

sters’ comfort levels away from home before school begins. • Follows instructions: Experts at BabyCenter.com advise that children who are able to listen to simple instructions and follow them will be more apt to thrive in classroom settings. They also will be more capable of keeping up with teachers and peers. • Self-sufficiency: Has your child exhibited signs that he or she can be self-reliant?

This includes putting on his or her coat, dressing himself or herself and being able to use the bathroom on his or her own. If not, then you might need to work on the child’s self-sufficiency before school begins. • Cursory knowledge of letters/numbers: While children on the verge of entering kindergarten need not be experts in language and mathematics, kindergarten curricula has become more rigorous thanks to the implementation of new standards. As a

result, children should be able to recognize some letters and numbers before starting school. They do not necessarily have to enter school knowing them all or being able to read fluently, but the more familiar they are with language and mathematics the more likely they are to have a successful year in kindergarten. • Coping strategies: Parenting experts affiliated with Care.com say that children on the verge of entering kindergarten should be able to control their emotions to a certain extent. While children may occasionally cry in the kindergarten classroom, it’s important that your child be able to cope with some of the ups and downs of classroom life without shedding tears. • Interest in learning: Another indicator of school readiness is a general interest in learning. Children who like hearing stories, enjoy participating in discussions and activities and are stimulated by information and interactions with others are probably ready to begin their academic careers. Kindergarten readiness can be determined by many factors. Age alone does not dictate a child’s readiness, as there are many additional potential indicators that can help parents determine if their youngsters are ready to begin school.

Make a transition to school easier on your child Being the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development. In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates.

In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools. • Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about

the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change. • Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kidsÕ concerns about their first day in a new school. • Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial in-

stability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have. • Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school

are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school. It stands to reason that students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit. Transitioning to a new school is not easy for many students. But parents can help smooth that transition in various ways.
