Schools, views draw residents to Mound

O

ver the last few years, Mound has been solidifying itself as a go to city on Lake Minnetonka’s western shores. Between its miles of lakeshore and the Dakota Rail Trail running through the city, Mound has all of the physical aspects an outdoor lover could ask for. ning right through the downtown area. Mound has drawn regional and national attention. It was rated in the top 20 on real estate company Movoto’s list of the Best Minneapolis Suburbs. Long Lake keeps it fun year-round

W

ith shaded, picturesque residential neighborhoods, an ever-growing and improving downtown business district, and the lake for which the city is named for, Long Lake has something to offer everyone from residents to visitors. Numerous businesses adorn the length of Wayzata Boulevard, the main street through the city, which received a major face lift in 2017. Among the new upgrades to the area will be a walking and biking path along the shoreline of Long Lake, which will meet up with the popular Luce Line Trail. Despite concerns during the construction, city staff teamed up with local business to ensure businesses and access to them remained open throughout the project. The city offers residents and visitors plenty of entertainment throughout the year in the form of familyfun and welcoming festivals. The city recently brought back and revamped the popular Buckhorn Days, with plans to continue the family-friendly festival every mid-July. During the colder months, Long Lake offers some winter fun at the Ice Madness Winterfest in early

February. More information about the city can be found on its website at www.longlakemn.gov or by calling city hall at 952-473-6961. The Long Lake City Council meets at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, located at 450 Virginia Ave., on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Elections for city council seats are held every two years. Orono: where business meets natural beauty

T

aking up a rather large portion of the northern shore of Lake Minnetonka, Orono offers a natural escape from the big city of Minneapolis, which lies only 15 miles west. Sixteen of the city’s 24 square miles is land, with the rest being a water retreat for all to enjoy. The city is home to around 7,750 people and a bustling business district named Navarre, which could see even more development in the near future. Spring Park attracts lakeside explorers

I

t’s restaurants and downtown business district are drawing residents to Spring Park from all around Lake Minnetonka. But when they arrive on shore, there’s much more than initially meets the eye. Boaters flock to popular lakeside restaurants like Lord Fletcher’s and when they get on land, there’s plenty to explore away from the lake. Spring Park has two parks for citizens and residents to enjoy. Thor Thomas Park is located at Sunset Drive (County Road 51) and Park Lane, and Wilkes Park is located one block south of Shoreline Drive on Old Channel Road, and one block west of Interlachen Boulevard. The city is experiencing new development, including the arrival of Back Channel Brewing on the shores of Seton Channel. Spring Park is also the boat launch at the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol headquarters, redone in 2015. The current of tourism has run strong throughout the history of Spring Park. The city’s tourism history began when James J. Hill’s Great Northern Railroad extended to Spring Park in 1882. The historic Hotel Del Otero was built in Spring Park in 1887, only to

burn down in 1945. The Spring Park City Hall is located at 4349 Warran Ave., Spring Park, MN 55384. The city administrator for Spring Park is Dan Tolsma. The city council meets at 7:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of each month. For more information call 952-471-9051, or visit www.ci.spring-park.mn.us. St. Bonifacius creates community

W

ith it’s strong community bonds and quiet atmosphere, the city of St. Bonifacius sits right along Highway 7, just west of Lake Minnetonka and northeast of Lake Waconia. Though the city is entirely surrounded by the City of Minnetrista, St. Bonifacius, or St. Boni as it’s affectionately called by its residents, is very much its own city with its own identity. As of the 2010 census, 2,283 people reside within the 1.07 square miles that make up St. Bonifacius. Missile Park is one of the bigger community draws in St. Bonifacius, playing host to many community events, including the city-wide Night to Unite held in 2016 to honor and meet with the Minnetrista police officers who serve the area. Residents can enjoy nine other parks in the small city, including Wilbur Thurch Memorial Park, Hiddenview Park, Pauly Park and Towns Edge Lions Park. Our Lady of the Lake: open to all

O

ur Lady of the Lake Catholic School’s variable tuition program is bringing in new families and providing a Catholic education for more and more students each year. The program will allow the school to continue its focus on high quality educational opportunities, small class sizes and service with a Catholic foundation, and will help it serve as many children as possible. With variable tuition, families can apply on OLL’s website and tuition rates are then based off the family’s financial status. Because the payments are based on each family’s unique situation, final amounts could range anywhere from $4,700 to $500 per student. Thanks in part to that program, OLL will have three pre-K classes to make space for all the students hoping to begin their educations with the catholic school. Beyond bringing in new students, the school’s new program is also helping the school retain students. In the program’s first year, the school is already seeing a 30 percent higher retention rate in preschoolers. Classrooms have integrated online learning, com-

puter-aided instruction with traditional teacher-led instruction to help personalize the experience for students. Students have rotational blended learning, which including project-based learning in a group, online instruction with Google Chromebooks and a teacher working with some groups of students for face-to-face instruction. Students in Pre-K through eighth grade can attend Our Lady of the Lake, which currently has about 130 enrolled students. The school offers integrated preschool and school-aged childcare and is located on the shores of Lake Langdon. The core academic program is designed to challenge each student, both intellectually and spiritually. OLL officials are committed to quality curriculum in the core areas while also providing opportunities with Spanish. Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School is located at 2411 Commerce Boulevard in Mound. More information about the school is available online at http:// school.ourladyofthelake.com. Regional trails provide recreation

W

ith two major trail systems running through the west lakes area, it’s no wonder local cities have become hubs for hikers, bikers and adventurers of all kinds. The Dakota Rail Regional Trail and Luce Line Trail are both former railroad routes that have been converted for foot or two-wheeled travel. Boasting a total length of 44 miles, the west lakes portion of the Dakota Rail Trail stretches 13 miles in Hennepin County. After the Dakota Rail Corridor was officially abandoned in 2009, the space was converted to this path for the approved uses of walking, biking, running, dog-walking, in-line skating and roller skiing. This segment of the trail runs from Wayzata to St. Bonifacius, passing through Orono, Minnetonka Beach, Spring Park, Mound and Minnetrista as it runs west. The trail runs over Crystal Bay and Smith Bay of Lake Minnetonka, affording trail-users views of the lake and its lush shores. It’s open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. As the trail passes through each locale, it runs closely to a number of local businesses that might

encourage a quick stop. These diversions range from food and drink available at Dakota Junction in Mound or Spring Park’s Minnetonka Drive-In to other attractions like The Noerenberg Gardens in Orono or Big Stone Mini Golf & Sculpture Garden in Minnetrista. The Luce Line Trail runs a total of 63 miles, named for Colonel William Luce. The easternmost thirty miles, which run through the west lakes area, has been developed into a limestone-surfaced trail. This surface is suitable for biking, hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and even snowmobiling for portions of the trail. For the west lakes portion, horseback riding takes place on a path parallel to the limestone surface, and snowmobiling is allowed west of Stubb’s Bay Road. Extending through groves of sugar maple and basswood trees for much of the west lakes portion, the trail eventually reaches remnants of the tall-grass prairies that once covered much of that area. Trail-users should not be surprised if they come across deer, pheasants or other wildlife here. Community Guide 2018-19 | WEST LAKES | 37
