letter from the editor welcome to appalachian country living magazine From the Editor’s Desk: Reflections on a Year of Transformation

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Amethyst Bush El | contact@aclivingmagazine.com

A

As the golden leaves of autumn PUBLISHER gracefully Alice Sexton | Blue Ridge Media Group surrender to alice@blueridgemediagroup.com the crisp chill of winter, we find ourselves at the threshold of a HISTORY EDITOR new year, bidding Leslie Barker Thomas | PresHist@etcmail.com adieu to 2023 with the Oct/ Nov 2023 issue and welcoming AD INQUIRIES Swingin’ Grapevine Throwback from June 30th the promise of 2024 Ikelan Helms El | ads@aclivingmagazine.com with the Dec/Jan issue. It is with both nostalgia and excitement that I share this letter with you. The past nine months have been nothing short of invigorating, a rollercoaster ride filled with surprises and a true test of time, as we embarked on the journey of ALL INQUIRIES expanding this beloved 20-year-old print magazine. Today, I want to take a moment Amethyst Bush El | contact@aclivingmagazine.com to reflect on this remarkable year, the lessons we’ve learned, and the path we’ve forged. Our journey in 2023 has been akin to navigating uncharted waters, discovering the hidden gems within the Appalachian region while overcoming the turbulence of LAYOUT/DESIGN change. We’ve delved into the heart and soul of this enchanting region, celebrating Amethyst Bush El | contact@aclivingmagazine.com its culture, traditions, and the indomitable spirit of the people. We’ve showcased the breathtaking landscapes, and we’ve delved deep into the stories of the extraordinary individuals who call this place home. We’ve savored the flavors of Appalachian cuisine, and we’ve tapped into the creative wellspring of artisans and craftsmen. CHIEF OF SALES AND MARKETING ...but, like any transformation, this year hasn’t been without its challenges. We’ve WZDM Management Agency LLC made our fair share of mistakes along the way, and we’ve faced adversity head-on. Ikelan Helms El | contact@wzdmatl.com Yet, in the spirit of our Appalachian ancestors we admire so much, we’ve learned from these missteps, grown stronger, and emerged wiser. One of the most profound lessons we’ve taken from this year is the power of community. Appalachia has always been a place where neighbors look out for each other, where kinship is cherished, and where bonds are unbreakable. In our journey to expand this magazine, we’ve witnessed this spirit of togetherness in action. The support and loyalty of our readers, contributors, and partners have been our guiding stars. As we turn the page into 2024, we do so with renewed determination and a deep sense of gratitude. We’ve listened to your feedback and embraced your suggestions. We’ve celebrated the stories you’ve shared with us and the connections you’ve made through our pages. And in the process, we’ve discovered that Appalachian Country Living Magazine is not just ink on paper; it’s a living testament to the spirit of Appalachia itself. In the coming year, you can expect more stories that resonate with your hearts, more breathtaking photography that captures the essence of this land, and more APPALACHIAN COUNTRY LIVING MAGAZINE insights into the culture that defines this remarkable region. We will continue to PO Box 1250, Blue Ridge, GA 30513 evolve, adapt, and grow, always with your interests at the forefront. 706. 953. 3272 As we say farewell to 2023 and step into the winter months of December PLEASE and January, let us remember that every season brings its unique beauty and RECYCLE contact@aclivingmagazine.com challenges. Sweet Potato Casserole

Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains Cornbread Stuffing

Ingredients

Ingredients

3 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and roughly cubed 1 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter melted 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup milk as up to 1 cup for desired consistency 2 cups mini marshmallows Toasted Pecans for garnish optional

1 twelve- to fifteen-pound turkey 2 cups Foster's Barbecue Sauce, plus more for serving (optional) 1 cup cider vinegar 1 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes 2 tablespoons light-brown sugar Tomato Herb Gravy (optional)

Instructions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and boil sweet potatoes until fork tender; about 20 minutes. Drain. Mash the sweet potatoes with a potato masher until smooth. (Use a hand mixer if you want absolutely smooth with no lumps). Stir in brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and salt until well combined. Add the milk a small amount at a time to reach desired consistency. Spray an 11-inch x 7-inch (medium-sized) casserole baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Spread sweet potatoes evenly in the prepared casserole dish and top with marshmallows. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until marshmallows are golden brown. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with toasted pecans.

www.yellowblissroad.com

Instructions Rinse cavity of turkey, and pat dry with paper towel. Place turkey, breast-side down, in a deep bowl or roasting pan. Combine barbecue sauce, vinegar, pepper, and sugar; pour over turkey. Let marinate, refrigerated, at least 8 hours or overnight. Light a charcoal fire, and let it burn until the coals have become a white ash. Alternatively, heat half of a gas grill set on medium-high. Brush the entire turkey with the marinade. Place the turkey on the grill, breast-side up, near but not directly over the coals, or on the side of the gas grill that is not turned on. Close the grill lid, and cook turkey 4 to 4 1/2 hours, until the internal temperature in the thickest part of the leg and breast is 160 degrees. Baste with the marinade every 30 to 45 minutes, rotating the turkey a quarter turn each time. Add coals heated in a firestarter chimney as needed to maintain an even temperature. When the turkey is fully cooked, remove from the grill, and let sit for 15 minutes before carving. Serve with tomato-herb gravy if desired, or additional barbecue sauce.

The Epworth General Store Lofts: A Luxurious Blend of History and Modern Living Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Epworth area, the newly completed Epworth General Store Lofts are a testament to the perfect fusion of historical charm and contemporary luxury. This remarkable restoration project has breathed new life into a piece of local history, offering a unique opportunity for those seeking a one-of-a-kind living experience. A Glimpse into History Originally built as a general store in the late 1800s, this architectural gem has been painstakingly transformed into a collection of stunning lofts. The final look is nothing short of breathtaking. Exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood beams, and high ceilings have been thoughtfully preserved to retain the building’s historical essence. The character and ambiance of the original structure have been seamlessly combined with modern amenities and design to create a living space that’s both charming and comfortable. Endless Customization Possibilities One of the standout features of the Epworth General Store Lofts is the abundant room for customization. Each loft offers a canvas for residents to express their personal style and create a space uniquely their own. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a minimalist, or a collector of antiques, there’s ample space to make your loft a reflection of your tastes and preferences. From open layouts to versatile floorplans, the lofts provide the perfect setting for your creative vision. Nature Lovers’ Paradise For those who appreciate the beauty of nature, the Epworth area has a lot to offer. The Toccoa River, known for its excellent trout fishing, is a stone’s throw away from the lofts. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a novice looking to take up a new hobby, the serenity of the river and the thrill of reeling in a prized catch is just a short walk from your doorstep. Imagine spending your weekends on the riverbank, casting your line, and basking in the tranquility of nature. Coming off the #8 Best New Golf Course in America award from Golf Digest in 2020, the Old Toccoa Farm team has been hard at work adding new amenities to their offering and as a result, this boutique resort community is hitting new heights. “We are welcoming extraordinary people to our community every day and as the developer, this is very rewarding. Whether it’s a home or homesite buyer, golfers, our Hillside Cottage guests, or people joining us for Sunday brunch at The Tavern, more and more people are liking what we are doing here,” says Peter Knutzen, Co-Managing Partner of Old Toccoa Farm. “We have experienced steady momentum over the past few years, and we expect that will continue in 2023. We have added 15 charming one-bedroom cottages for overnight short-term stays, and our culinary offerings at The Tavern continue to improve as we close on our first full year of operations.” OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023

The Hillside Cottages are the first on-property accommodations to become available at Old Toccoa Farm. The intimate Hillside Cottages, known as The Persimmon and The Dogwood (two distinct floor plans and exteriors) have been well received by visiting guests and residents of the community. The cozy, one bedroom, 500-square-foot Appalachian-style cottages have exteriors of stacked stone, board and batten, and cedar shake roofing. The Hillside Cottage interiors were designed by OTF member Vicki Decker, owner of New Blue Home, a Blue Ridge design firm. The cottages offer a cozy living room with plenty of space to relax and unwind, a full kitchen complete with ample counter space and bar seating, Nespresso Coffeemaker, and a washer/dryer to freshen up clothes after a hike or a day on the links, a separate bedroom with king-size bed and a private bath with tiled shower, flat screen smart TV’s as well as appropriate window

appropriate window treatments for privacy. And if that wasn’t enough, each cottage has its own stone patio with Adirondack chairs and delightful hardscaping, all with sweeping views of the golf course and Toccoa River. The new accommodation is a true game-changer for OTF where visitors can now stay on property and enjoy all that OTF has to offer. If you are looking to visit the area, then book yourself a get-away that you will never forget and visit the OTF website (oldtoccoafarm.com) and check out the accommodations page. Award-winning golf, charming accommodations, and what about food? The developers of Old Toccoa Farm worked closely with two highly accredited and talented restaurant operators, with deep experience in both operations and culinary programming, to develop and launch The Tavern at Old Toccoa Farm. The Tavern was designed by the architectural firm, Kuo Diedrich Chi out of Atlanta and the interior was designed by OTF member and owner of Baribault Design Group, Beverly Baribault. “When you bring this level of talent together, you are hopeful that the product will justify the means and the expense. We weren’t trying to build a clubhouse because we really don’t like the word clubhouse here. We envisioned something a little more laid back and authentic to the mountain lifestyle, so we landed on the word Tavern. True to our vision, the Tavern is a gathering place where friends, family, and guests can enjoy each other, have a nice meal, tasty drinks, all with a beautiful view. I really think we achieved that goal and created something our members can be proud of for years to come,” says Kevin Hermetz, Co-Managing Partner at Old Toccoa Farm. The membership is growing and so is the community. With over 435 memberships, 49 full and part-time homes completed, the community here is alive and well. New home construction remains steady, with 14 homes currently under construction, and an ever-increasing pipeline through 2023. Old Toccoa Farm is adding new real estate to the market this fall, Mountainside, a new neighborhood within Old Toccoa Farm, coffers larger lots with wider frontage, all within a heavy wooded hardwood forest. High-speed fiber optic internet, private sewer, City of Blue Ridge water and underground power also add tremendous value when comparing to other communities in the area. Old Toccoa Farm Realty is now taking reservations for the new Mountainside lots and preparing to release the next phase of cottages by early summer 2024.

Community outreach and member activities are tightly woven into the DNA of Old Toccoa Farm. The developer of Old Toccoa Farm, along with many of its employees and members are actively involved with local charities and support programs, including River’s Alive, Habitat for Humanity, The Open Arms Home for Children, and Casting for Recovery. A thriving Ladies and Men’s Golf Association with a growing number of members, fly fishing and shooting sporting clays (OTF partnership with Noontootla Creek Farms), and a robust menu at The Tavern filled with culinary, viniculture, spirts, and music events, provide our members with a true mountain lifestyle. If you are looking for a community in the north Georgia Mountains, and specifically, convenient to the charm of Historic Downtown Blue Ridge, you owe it to yourself to visit Old Toccoa Farm. A true sense of community, where people, lifestyle, and design live together...and golf.... well.... It’s more than special! ACLM

Recognizing and Observing the National Day of Mourning In November 1972, Wamsutta Frank James, an Aquinnah Wampanoag Elder and Native rights activist, called for a protest against the Thanksgiving celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This protest marked the beginning of the National Day of Mourning.

In the heart of November, many of us in the United States look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday—a time when families gather, tables are laden with traditional dishes, and gratitude fills our hearts. But as we come together for this holiday, it's essential to acknowledge that Thanksgiving has a more complex history than the story we were often taught in school. Today, we'd like to share a different perspective, one that honors the traditions of Indigenous Americans and recognizes the National Day of Mourning. Long before the arrival of European settlers, the indigenous people of Turtle Island, as America was once called, celebrated Thanksgiving about 13 times a year. These celebrations were deeply rooted in the natural rhythms of the land, aligning with the changing seasons and the abundance of the Earth's gifts.

Different seasons brought various berries, fruits, and harvests, each celebrated in its own way. Tribes came together, strengthening their kinship through shared songs, stories, and trade. These traditions persist today, illustrating the resilience and enduring culture of Indigenous communities. However, the story that many of us are familiar with —the so-called "First Thanksgiving"—is a romanticized account that has obscured the history and struggles of Indigenous peoples. This distortion, which has been perpetuated through written accounts and historical narratives, is part of what Chenae Bullock refers to as "paper genocide." This term describes the erasure of Indigenous history and culture through the manipulation of historical records.

Ironically, the term "thanksgiving" first appeared in a proclamation by Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop in 1637. It was a day of celebration following the massacre of the Pequot village by English settlers. The proclamation aimed to erase the Pequot people from history, outlaw their identity, enslave thousands of them, and commemorate their vanquishing. This tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving after violent events continued throughout the early colonial period. It wasn't until President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation that Thanksgiving became an official national holiday. Many Indigenous tribes on the East Coast have suffered from this historical distortion, leading to a widespread lack of awareness about these harsh truths.

As we observe Native American Heritage Month, let us not only learn about the history of the local Indigenous Peoples but also find ways to support their resilience and activism.

After the Revolution in Hiawassee Fannin

C

Cherokee and Muscogee Indians lived in this part of the Georgia Territory long before the American Revolutionary War began and ended. They used the heavily forested lands as their hunting grounds. The 1830 census showed only five counties, and Gilmer was within the Hall and Gwinnett County lines. The census records listed Cherokee families separately from “mixed-bloods,” who were listed as “free colored persons” on the last pages. Both were listed by the names of the head of household.

It was estimated that 250 whites were living in the land, exclusive of the missionaries, traders, and peddlers. Of those 250 people, one hundred had Indian families. Several small communities are found in the records of what became Fannin County. One such was the Douglas community. Although no one seems to know how it got its name, they remember Indians were living there long before the railroad found its way through the hills in the 1880s. Afterward, the name of the community was changed to Mineral Bluff. Fannin was named after Col. James Walker 30

Fannin Jr. He was a military officer, planter, and slave trader who served in the Texian Army during the Texas Revolution. The Fannin Memorial Monument marks the spot where over 300 Georgians died in Texas on March 27, 1836. Fannin County was named in January of 1854 when parts were taken from Gilmer and Union counties. Shortly after this time, the cities of Blue Ridge, McCaysville, and Morganton were formerly named. Toccoa, Hemptown, Douglas (Mineral Bluff), and Epworth were unincorporated communities at that time. One of the first white settler families was that of Frazier Galloway and his wife, Lavisa McClure. He had come from Virginia and had been born about 1802. They settled along the Toccoa River in 1822. Galloway was appointed an Indian agent. His duty was to keep the peace between the settlers coming into the area and the local Indians. When the Removal came in the late 1830s, his duties changed to providing the militia with money and goods needed for a successful transition. Imagine how Galloway’s children felt about losing their childhood friends, or how the new settlers felt about losing their new friends. The Cherokee had helped them build their cabins and taught them how to farm the land for successful crops, especially corn, beans, and squash. They also protected their children from wild animals that could harm or kill them. Fort Chastain, located at Star Creek on the Toccoa River, was one of the collection points. Now located under Lake Blue Ridge, it was located on land owned by Benjamin Chastain, a farmer and Indian agent. Orders from the Georgia government were to remove the Indians to Fort Butler in Murhpy County, North Carolina. Stories handed down remind us that the indigenous people were here. They left names on places where new residents settled, but had little idea of what the names meant. Cowee Town, Stecoah, or Toocowee, meaning “pig fat” is an example. Sugar Town, Kulsetsi, which means honey locust, Fighting Town, and Walosi, meaning Frog Town, are other names and examples from the area. ACLM
