2010-11 Season Outlook In just three short years of existence, the Norwich women’s ice hockey program has gone from the new kid on the block to a legitimate national championship contender. Two seasons ago, the Cadets won their first ECAC East Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before falling 3-2 to Elmira. Last season, NU took it a step further by clinching back-to-back league titles and then going on a cinderella run to the NCAA Division III finals before finally falling to defending champion Amherst. However, the Cadets had already made their mark on the D-III women’s hockey scene in 2009-2010 by downing two former national champions in Plattsburgh (3-2) and Elmira (3-2). “Last year was a special year for us,” NU head coach Mark Bolding said. “We took a couple more steps from the previous year and I think it validated the fact that we’re a decent hockey club and one of the better ones in the country.” This year Norwich returns its top 10 scorers from a year ago and will be looking to achieve the lone trophy still missing from the mantle; a national championship.

come back for her final season of eligibility. Leclerc (14 goals, 23 assists, 37 points) will once again wear the captain ‘C’ in 2010-11 and will be in charge of leading a young team with high expectations. “It’s nice that Sophie will be able to use her last year of eligibility here,” Bolding said. “From our standpoint, it’s leadership and energy right away. Her energy and passion for the game are incredible. She plays hard every shift and is a good hockey player. It’s one thing to have an energy player but when she’s arguably the best player on the ice for both teams, it’s a huge boost.”

Junior F Julie Fortier Also returning for the Cadets will be junior forward Julie Fortier (23-17-40) who led the team in points and goals. Her totals tied for fifth in the nation last year. Senior Kelsey Cone (10-13-23) and junior defensemen Melissa Rundlett (10-13-23) and Amanda Wilks (1111-22) rounded out the top-five scorers from a year ago and return as well. If there is one word that differentiates this year’s edition of the Cadets from the previous three years it’s depth. Bolding has brought in 12 new players for 20102011 to help provide balance across all four lines and a stronger corps of defensemen. Jill DeBus, a sophomore transfer from Elmira

Senior F Sophie Leclerc “It was a great experience getting to the Frozen Four last year and we’ve made it our goal right from the start to get back there and hopefully taste the big victory this year.” Just before the start of the season, Norwich got word that forward Sophie Leclerc would be able to 5

2010-11 Season Outlook should provide an immediate boost on offense after she tied for second on the Soaring Eagles with 15 goals last year as a freshman. Kayla Lascelle and Kayla Parsons are expected to compete for time immediately on defense and become important contributors on the special teams units. “Our defense will be much more improved,” Bolding said. “Kayla Lascelle and Kayla Parsons should be two dominant defensemen. Up front, Renee Lortie and sophomore transfer Jill DeBus who was a 15-goal scorer with Elmira last year will help us a lot.” The new-look Cadets will get an immediate test on Oct. 29 and 30 as they host the first annual Norwich Classic at Kreitzberg Arena to kick off the new season. “The tournament at home just made sense to start something up that we can hopefully keep going,” Bolding said. “We have such a great arena and a good hockey fan base and we would like to see this tournament become a premier attraction early in the season.” ECAC West powerhouses Elmira and Rochester Institute of Technology, along with New England College round out the four-team pre-determined matchup tournament. Norwich will face R.I.T. on Friday before following up with fellow 2010 Frozen Four participant Elmira on Saturday.

tournament when we started was to bring in two good teams from the ECAC West and we got them in Elmira and RIT.” The Norwich Classic is just the beginning of a challenging non-conference schedule for the Cadets this season.

Senior G Cindy Fortin Starting on Dec. 3 at Kreitzberg with the first leg of a home and home with 2007 and 2008 national champion Plattsburgh, the Cadets embark on a four-game stretch that will feature the best D-III has to offer. Norwich will meet Trinity in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Dec. 10 after the Bantams made their first-ever appearance in the NCAAs a year ago. The Cadets follow up by hosting two-time defending national champion Amherst on Dec. 12 and then opening up the 2011 portion of their schedule at Plattsburgh on Jan. 12. Norwich wraps up the regular season with three games in the final week. The Cadets close out their non-conference schedule on Feb. 15 at Middlebury before hosting arch-rival Manhattanville on Feb. 19 and Nichols on Feb. 20. “Purposely we wanted to draw some of the better teams and I think we’ve certainly done that,” Bolding said. “We arguably have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. It’s good though. We’ve got a new opponent in Trinity as well as Amherst in our rink and Middlebury at their rink. “We feel like this is a great opportunity for us this year and we want to take advantage of it. We’ve got some solid incoming players that I think are going to

Senior F Kelsey Cone “It’s nice to play two good non-conference teams at home early in the season to get a gauge of where you’re at,” Bolding said. “That was the concept of the 6

2010-11 Season Outlook make our depth much more improved and put us on an equal playing field with the rest of the top five teams in the nation as far as depth.”As far as the ECAC East goes, the two-time defending tournament champion Cadets will most likely find a chief challenger for the crown in Manhattanville once again this season. “On paper it always seems like it should come down to us and Manhattanville in the finals but we’ve been fortunate to not have to face them the last two years,” Bolding said. “We haven’t played very well against them, especially at home. They’re going to be there and we’re going to have to cross their path at some point.” With two league titles and two NCAA appearances already under their belt in just three years, the 20102011 season could be the finest yet for the NU women’s hockey program. “It was my personal goal to have a contender in five years and we’re a little bit ahead of schedule right now,” Bolding said. “The challenging thing now will be trying to be there at the end consistently and win the final game at some point. We’d like to be like the men’s team and have a program where we’re in the NCAAs every year and knocking on the door on a consistent basis.”

He has been the driving force behind the team’s steady improvement as the squad enters its fourth varsity season. Last year’s team won the ECAC East Tournament title and made it all the way to NCAA final in only its second Tournament apperance, setting a team record in wins (20) along the way. The 2008-09 team also claimed the ECAC East Tournament title, receiving the program’s first berth to the NCAA Championship. Prior to his current post, Bolding served two stints as an assistant coach for the Norwich men’s hockey team under successful mentor Mike McShane. Bolding was the men’s top assistant coach during 1995-96 season, and helped recruit one of the finest recruiting classes in Norwich hockey history including the likes of Marc Bellemare, Curt Healey, Mike Ludwar, Bryce Herperger and Jason Lumsden. In addition to his coaching position, Bolding also served as the marketing director and manager for Kreitzberg Arena, and he sold over 650 season tickets during the team’s first year in the building. During the 1999-2000 season, Bolding helped the Norwich men win its first national championship, with a dramatic 21 win over Wisconsin-Superior. A native of Red Deer, Alb., Bolding was a standout defenseman during his collegiate playing days at Norwich, serving as the team captain for three of his four seasons. Bolding finished his NU career with 94 points. His 73 assists put him alongside the all-time career assist leaders at the school. In 2005, Bolding was inducted into the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1995 Norwich graduate, Bolding holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi fraternities during his undergraduate days. He held engineering positions in Chicago, Boston and Montpelier, Vt., before returning
