Minster Matters

I was overwhelmed at our editorial meeting this month when discussions were interrupted by Karen from Attwells carrying a large parcel and a fat envelope which she said she had come to present to me. Something which I wasn’t aware was going to happen, although all the rest of the ‘E’ team present were ‘in the know’. This was the culmination of Karen’s plea for villagers to rally around and donate towards the cost of the Olympic torch I carried in Ramsgate, a gesture I was obviously aware of, but that I never expected residents to respond to so well. However your generosity has surpassed everything I could have imagined and Karen . tells me she had to eventually refuse donations,

Your Friendly Village Magazine Issue Number 140: September 2012 ISSN 1755-9502 (Print) : ISSN 1755-9510 (Online) : ISSN 1758-4175 (CD-ROM)

As well as collecting the full cost of the torch and all the ancillary items that went with it (contents of the fat envelope), she also had enough left over to purchase two large silver photo frames (contents of the parcel) and a limited edition book that the Olympic Games Committee have had printed to commemorate the torchbearers right across the country. So, for your generosity I truly thank you all and to Karen I send two very special thank you’s, firstly for nominating me to carry the torch and secondly for this collection which I wasn’t expecting. The whole thing has been a truly amazing plethora of events that will remain with me forever. What I still can’t get my head round is just how many people want to be photographed with me and the torch.

MINSTER ABBEY BENEDICTINE NUNS WELCOME VILLAGE SCHOOL FOR “ABBEY DAYS” At the end of June, over a period of three days, almost 600 children, parents, and teachers from Minster Primary School came to spend the day with the Benedictine Nuns of Minster Abbey. “ABBEY DAYS”, was one the events to mark the 75th anniversary of the refoundation of Minster Abbey. The invitation of the sisters to Minster Primary school was planned in order to provide an opportunity for the children of the village of Minster to learn more about the important historical significance of the 7th century foundation as well as to allow the children to experience firsthand a living monastic community. The excited sounds of the youngest children as they fed the ducks and picnicked in the grounds of Parkminster was a sure sign of how much they enjoyed the Abbey experience. The teachers and sisters who planned the day together tried to incorporate various activities which would enable the children to experience life at the Abbey in the twenty-first century. Activities included a “photo-trail” where the children were instructed to explore the grounds of the monastery and discover various interesting historical effects. Whilst some children were on their investigations, others were sitting on the Abbey lawns, painting and drawing various aspects of the ancient Saxon and Norman buildings. Each group visited the chapel where the sisters welcomed the children and gave them an explanation of the place of prayer in the life of the sisters. The children were given an opportunity to ring the chapel bells, to feel the smooth texture of the ancient yew tree of which the altar is built, to learn something about some of the various symbols used in the liturgy and to personally experience the silence of the beautiful place of prayer. The time in the chapel concluded with the children singing “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God”, which soon became the theme of “Abbey Days”. Cont’d o/leaf…

MINSTER ABBEY BENEDICTINE NUNS WELCOME VILLAGE SCHOOL FOR “ABBEY DAYS” Cont’d… Sue Jezzard of Minster school used this theme with the children to create a magnificent banner which expresses very creatively, the links of friendship between the children of Minster and the community of Minster Abbey. It is now hanging near the entrance in Parkminster Grange, to remind all the visitors of these important links. (See centre pages for photos of this.) Mother Nikola took each of the little groups of children on a tour of the Abbey. They visited the beautiful crypt, the oldest part of the monastery. They examined the shapes and textures of the ancient Saxon stones, the depths of the walls, the large Norman windows and Tudor doors, and various other interesting aspects of the structure of the buildings. She explained to the children how the events of the Anglo Saxon period and the later Norman Conquest had such a significant effect on the architecture of the Abbey buildings, the life of the community and ultimately the history of the village of Minster. The children had fun discovering about monastic life in the 21st century. Various displays of the work, prayer and life in the monastery were available for the children to explore. Some more adventurous volunteers dressed up as St. Mildred, St. Domneva and even St. Theodore of Canterbury. There were roars of laughter when our “Time travellers” moved from the 7th century to the 21st century! The children enthusiastically exchanged ideas about how life was so different in those early days of St. Mildred. There were no pot noodles or Mars bars! The sisters reported “It was good to welcome the children of our village as part of our 75th Jubilee celebrations. The last time so many children came to visit us was for the celebration of our Golden Jubilee in 1987 when the children put on a little play about the early foundation of the Abbey. We still have the banner made by many of the mothers of the children, and this was displayed recently. We are aware of just how important it is to pass on the rich history of the Abbey to the young people of our village.” Please see centre pages for photos of this experience.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Carol is helping out again this month with her report of the ATC barbecue, to which the Association was kindly invited:MANICURES, PEDICURES We had a lovely evening with our hosts from the ATC WAXING, TINTING Thanet. FACIALS, SPRAY TANS On arrival, we were ushered to a table for six at the Plus... Brand New Gelish Nail Polish front of the spacious hall and enjoyed a hot brew of tea Special offer for September only! and coffee whilst salivating on the delicious aroma of frying onions, sausages and beefburgers wafting in from Gelish Fingers and Gelish Toes the outside. A Power Point display and background music was playing and then we heard the ever popular cry of ‘BBQ’s ready’ rattling round the hall. The cadets were kind and allowed us to take our (offer excludes Gelish French polish) positions at the front of the queue to satisfy our 'your nails will look perfect for weeks...' ever-increasing hunger. (Well to be honest, they were Book now to avoid disappointment told to wait until all the guests had been served). Hot food eaten, then the cakes appeared. MINSTER-IN-THANET WI Although the institute does not have a formal meeting in August, many activities have continued since the July meeting. A team of four members, backed by a number of supporters, took part in the Acol Group round of East Kent Federation of WIs' Top Team Quiz at Monkton. Although doing very well for much of the 1L/3 evening, they narrowly lost out to the team from Broadstairs and St. Peter's WI who will go on to contest the final in October. A small group of members spent a very enjoyable evening having a meal and watching greyhound racing at Sittingbourne, and three members helped cater for over two hundred members at a special EKFWI tea party held at Godinton Park to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Sunshine Club visited Whitstable Castle - a lovely outing for an afternoon; the Walking Group have explored the Sandwich Bay area and also walked from Deal to Sandwich: and the monthly Games Evenings have continued as usual. DATES FOR DIARY The next meeting of Minster in Thanet WI is on Tuesday 11th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. There will be a Coffee and Chat morning on Thursday 20th September from 10am to 12noon in the Committee Room at the Village Hall. Visitors and new members always welcome.

REFLECTIONS ON MINSTER SHOW Each year brings new challenges for Minster Show and this one was no exception! The weather. Setting up on Friday in the marquee is a difficult job, it takes a dedicated team to make the inside have perfect tables ready for the entries on Saturday morning. The ground was already soft and Matt Spanton very kindly tip toed the tractor and trailer in to minimize any damage. Ed Spanton supports us by lending tractor, trailer and storage space for the Show, otherwise there would be no tables for exhibits. Roy Bailey and Matt then passed the trestles and table tops down to the team which included two 12 year olds — one of whom happened to be passing and, seeing the work required, offered to help. Step forward Charlie Hunt — our own hero of the moment! The following morning I was on the grounds at 6 am and it was sodden. There are a number of jobs that need doing and again a few are supported by about 6 people to help it happen. When the first stall to arrive was the Fun Fair I had a little sinking feeling; which was duly matched by the dent in the grass from the vehicle. Quick decisions followed and as a committee we tried to restrict the vehicle damage to the grass to make sure it had more time to dry out for the public — that's you- to be able to not have a mud bath by the marquee! Thank you, all of you who walked the extra bit carrying your many exhibits to the marquee. We appreciated it and I think the grass did too. At any rate it was drier and less muddy by the afternoon. What I had not realised, stood on the gate directing traffic, was that there were so many new people entering categories for the first time. This is your Show — thank you for making it what it was this year. Not only was the marquee full of vibrant colour, but also the Parade looked spectacular. I know I see you all getting ready at Freeman's Road, but it always still impresses me when you come into the grounds en masse; yes I sprint down to see it!! The afternoon seemed to be full of very happy smiling faces of all ages, I hope it was the Show and not just that it was the first time we had all seen the sun for some weeks. I try to chat to you on the grounds, but I'm always sure some of you go home and think about what you liked and what you might change — please come and talk to us. That is what we have an AGM for — it is not another committee meeting; it is your chance to tell all of us what you want to see happen and discuss ideas. This year it is Friday 12th October at 7.30 in the Neighbourhood Centre. We are a small number of people, and committees are not for everyone; but if you — like Charlie -think you can offer an hour or so of your time to help move heavy tables then please come to the AGM and tell us. Some of us are getting to the stage where it is plain hard work on the Friday, Saturday to change from exhibits to Ceilidh and Sunday morning to reload the tractor. The overall feedback has been really positive from what we have heard around the Village; your contribution be it an entry, running a stall, dressing up for the Parade or throwing an egg at your friend makes the Show what it is. Thank you all. Dominique Vaughan (Chair)

Your Letters… Resurfacing Repercussions I read the article on keeping gravel on drives, and it being a hazard if it got onto the path and eventually onto the road. I would like to draw your attention at the deplorable way in which Monkton Road was RESURFACED RECENTLY. It was done in such haste, and with no forethought to the residents living in the road. The chippings were laid in such haste, that I had to immediately brush them off the pavement, to enable people to walk along safely. Of course it didn’t matter if they walked into the home that’s not the council’s concern. Traffic coming along did not slow down, which also caused Unisex Hairdressers the chippings to be thrown up onto the pavement. Modern Salon In all, to my mind it was a quick, cheap exercise on the council’s part in repairing the Friendly Welcome road surface. So the gravel on the drives pales into insignificance to what the council purported Affordable Prices to be resurfacing of Monkton Road. Truly shoddy workmanship. (Rosemary Ball) Mon/Wed/Sat

MINSTER KNIT AND TALK GROUP The knitting group are making warm garments, gloves, scarves, hats etc., to form a Christmas tree that will be displayed in the library window. This will then be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to the homeless and needy. Should anyone in the village wish to knit any of these items to help fill the tree then they can be left at the library. Donations of yarn or contributions towards its cost can also be left with the librarians. The group would like to say a BIG thank you to both Minster Post Office and the Haberdashery shop in Ramsgate for their kind donations that have helped to get this started. If you would like more information or maybe you’ve a wish to join the group, we get together on a Friday morning from 10 ‘til 12 in the meeting room above the library, just pop along and see us, it is very friendly and informal.

September 2012 COME SLIM WITH ME

Who wouldn't want to lose weight whilst eating the foods they love? Think big bowls of pasta and roast dinners, fish and chips or a curry! These are the reasons that Jo Hollands joined her local Slimming World Group and lost over 2.5 stone. Jo explained "At Slimming World you food optimise, it's very simple. You fill up on delicious filling foods and have the flexibility of still enjoying a glass of wine or something sweet. Gone are my days of calorie counting every morsel of food, depriving myself of my favourite foods.” Jo is a self-confessed foodie who has always loved cooking for friends and family. However, she says "I do not remember ever being at a weight I was happy with. I tried so many diets, but I was so miserable as I spent most of my time hungry and craving the foods I loved and thought I couldn't have. I believed that being a foodie meant I would never be the weight I wanted to be.” After having her first child Jo found she just couldn't shed the pounds. ”I gave up cooking, I felt food was my enemy! I tried to lose weight, but it wouldn’t go. So I found a local Slimming World group and dragged myself there. My first week I lost 10lb, it was the boost I needed and gave me confidence in the plan. I was no longer grumpy and hungry, and my love of food and cooking was restored." Jo now cooks again for friends and family but using food optimising. She says they never realise that the food is part of a healthy eating plan as everything is delicious! “Food Optimising is extremely flexible. Even if you don't love cooking, Slimming World has plenty of quick fix ideas and recipes to help you, all using fresh and tasty ingredients that won't blow the budget! As a Mum, I know you don't have time to spend hours in the kitchen preparing food. Being able to prepare a meal in 15 mins is often essential. “ Jo is so passionate about Slimming World she has trained to be a consultant. She told us "I am so excited about becoming a Consultant. I can’t wait to help and motivate members whilst proving together that you can eat and lose weight!" Jo is taking over the Birchington Group which meets every Wednesday at Kearns Hall Minnis Bay at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. She is also launching a new day time group in Birchington on 12th September at Church House, (Kent Gardens) Wednesdays at 9.30am. For more information please feel free to contact Jo on 07793 032 134 (See her main advert on page 20 & watch out for possible future recipes)

IMPORTANT NHS REMINDER FOR PARENTS OF FOUR-YEAR-OLDS If you have a four-year-old starting school this autumn, are you sure all their vaccinations are up-to-date? Hundreds of children in Kent and Medway miss out on the second jab to protect them against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Now NHS Kent and Medway is reminding parents to check that children, especially those starting school this autumn, are fully vaccinated. Dr Faiza Khan, Consultant in Public Health for NHS Kent and Medway, said: “Take-up rates for MMR immunisation in Kent and Medway are higher than the national average but we would like even more children to be protected. "While between 93.1 and 95.6 per cent of children have their first MMR dose by the time they are two, the rate for the second MMR jab, given before the fifth birthday, is between 88.9 and 91.5 per cent. "This is better than the England average of 86.9 per cent but still means around 1,200 children in Kent and 350 in Medway miss out on their second MMR vaccination each year. "It may be that parents are busy and forget about this vaccination or that they do not realise how important it is. "Both doses of the vaccination are needed to give children maximum protection against these serious diseases, and reduce the risk of outbreaks. "Parents will be thinking about everything they need to do to make sure their four-year-olds are ready for that important first day at school. As part of that, we would urge them to ensure they have had all their vaccinations.” The first MMR immunisation is given within one month of the child’s first birthday. The second dose should be given between

the ages of three years and four months and five years, or before the child starts school. Parents of children whose MMR vaccinations are not up-to-date should make an appointment at their GP surgery. Even if your child has missed a vaccination, or is older than the recommended age, it is not too late to be immunised. For more information, please speak to your GP practice or health visiting team.

The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. Our local services provide practical services and support, including Dementia Cafes, Peer Support Groups and a Day Centre to provide respite care. For more information, please contact 0845 04 05 919 or email EastKent@alzheimers.org.uk More support for dementia patients and their families NHS Kent along with Medway and Kent County Council have commissioned a number of voluntary organisations to provide Dementia Cafes and Peer Support Groups across the county. It is estimated that over 22,000 people in Kent and Medway have dementia and this figure is expected to more than double in the next 30 years. Dementia Cafes are informal meeting places where people with dementia and their families can receive practical information, as well as emotional and social support. They aim to help those affected by dementia feel part of the community and to talk to others facing similar issues on a daily basis. Peer Support Groups are small meetings which consists of patients who have recently been diagnosed with dementia and wish to support and share experiences with each other. Support groups aim to help people come to terms with their diagnosis by sharing how they feel with other patients. The groups bring people together so they are not coping alone. They also give valuable information and explain how to access the support they might need. We are planning on investing £600,000 to expand our range of services in the community so people with dementia can remain independent for as long as possible. This new investment, which will ensure that these services will now be available in all 12 districts of Kent, is part of our commitment to helping patients living with dementia to live well. We also plan to invest £3.5m by April 2014 in improving mental health hospital facilities. To help people find out more about symptoms and local services, Kent and Medway have a dedicated dementia website, please visit:www.dementiawebkentandmedway.org.uk Thanet East Kent Independent Dementia Support is running a Dementia Cafe in Thanet, call 01227 730000 for venue information and meeting dates. September 2012 MINSTER PLAYHOUSE Latest Production Directed by David Downes-Powell

THE PLAY - Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”

Noel Coward was this country’s most prolific and popular playwright and actor of the forties and fifties, and Blithe Spirit is one of his best-known and best-loved plays. It regularly re-appears on the London stage, the last time two years ago. The story is a love triangle - but with a difference! In this play, one of the triangle’s sides is a ghost, the shade of Charles Condomine’s dead wife, Elvira. Charles is a writer, married for the second time, and is about to start a book about a fake medium who is to be a complete charlatan. He invites a local psychic to his house to give a séance, hoping to learn the “tricks of the trade” and the jargon. However the séance goes badly wrong for Charles when it brings his dead wife back to haunt him, and she decides to capture him to herself forever. As you might expect there is a twist in the tale, which leads to an exciting finale as the ghosts set out to destroy the house, as the final curtain falls. Blithe Spirit combines dry humour and spooky surprises as the play progresses. Minster Playhouse’s reputation for exceptional plays and really special effects will be showcased in this production which combines the acting talents of its long-serving players along with a beautiful and talented newcomer playing Elvira. For this production only, the Playhouse will be employing a highly experiFed up of watching your ironing pile enced medium backstage and using real ghosts for the special effects! Important changes to Council Tax - Your chance to have your say before it changes Dear Sir or Madam, Changes to Council Tax may affect local residents….please share your views with us I am writing to all parish and town councils to inform you that from April 2013 there will be some major changes to Council Tax and Council Tax benefit that may affect local residents. The Council is carrying out a consultation about the proposed changes and we would like to hear your view. The government has said that support for Council Tax will be localised from April 2013. This means that Thanet District Council needs to design and operate its own Council Tax Support scheme and that Council Tax Benefit in its current form will no longer exist from 1st April 2013. The amount of financial grant the Council will receive from the government to fund a new scheme will be approximately 10-15% less than it currently receives; this means that the Council needs to consider how to reduce the level of help it gives to residents on low income.

The government has also announced that local authorities are able to make changes to Council Tax from April 2013. From this date we are able to change discounts and exemptions given to certain properties for Council Tax purposes. These changes mainly affect empty properties and “second homes”. The Council is asking for views on the proposed changes, the consultation period runs until 17th September 2012. You can go online at www.thanet.gov.uk/counciltaxchanges to find out more about the changes, view the proposal and the Equality Impact Assessment in full or to participate in the consultation. Paper copies of the consultation can be requested from the central information line on 01227 862310 between 9am and 5pm. This information line has been set up as a partnership between Canterbury City Council, Dover District Council and Thanet District Council. Yours faithfully Dr Sue McGonigal Chief Executive, Thanet District Council

Dear Thanet resident Mathew Munson, Front of House Co-ordinator, East Kent Services has asked that the following information be circulated as widely as possible. On 23 July, East Kent Councils (Canterbury, Dover & Thanet) launched the official public consultation on their proposed local Council Tax Support scheme, to replace Council Tax Benefit (which the government are abolishing). The new scheme must be in place by 1 April 2013. Its brief was to design a local scheme to cater for a significant drop in government funding, whilst ensuring that pensioners’ benefits are fully protected; as legislation will prescribe this. Below are the links to the individual consultations, which outline the proposals. The links are: www.dover.gov.uk/counciltaxchanges www.canterbury.gov.uk/counciltaxchanges www.thanet.gov.uk/counciltaxchanges The consultation will run from Monday, 23 July until Monday, 17 September 2012. Should you have any queries, a central 'information line' has been set up, which will deal with requests for paper copies of the forms/questionnaire and respond to enquiries about what is being

proposed. The number is (01227) 862310 and this will be open 9am to 5pm weekdays for the duration of the consultation period. Matthew hopes that as many people as possible across East Kent will give their views through the consultation documents, as it's an important discussion being held locally; he is more than happy to come to your organisations and present this as a ten-minute 'slot' should you wish, to either clients or staff (or a combination of the two). Matthew and Bev Hussey (Operations Manager for EK Services / Gateway) will be organising a mini Partner Forum later in the year, to talk about the benefit changes across the board and will email out with details of this in due course. Kind regards Anne Charman Community Engagement Officer for Thanet Communications and Community Engagement Kent County Council Room 2.65, Sessions House County Hall, Maidstone ME14 1XQ Telephone: 01622 696389 Mobile: 07717 665893 www.kent.gov.uk/communityengagement
