August 2013 EDITORIAL

What started out at the beginning of editorial week as a magazine with very little in it, then grew like topsy as the week progressed and copy date was nearly upon us. On the Monday prior to copy date each month we have an editorial meeting where I normally take a handful of articles etc that need typing up, to distribute amongst the ‘E’ team to keep them busy. However this month I had absolutely nothing to take with me so everyone went home empty handed, thinking maybe we would have a job to fill 28 pages. Well we needn’t have worried, come Wednesday I was snowed under with articles and could see we would probably have to up the page count to 32, how wrong could I be!!. This month we had one of our new co-editors take the reins from Amy and give it a go to produce us a ‘live’ copy, having had a couple of months practising on dummy pages. I’m sure you will all see our confidence in Colin’s ability to do so was well founded as I personally think he’s done a great job for a first attempt. Next month our other new recruit Henry will be trying his hand at doing the same and we hope then to have them take turn and turn about, relieving Amy to go off and pursue her career ambitions. Of course we will be sorry to lose her as she has been a stalwart of the team for longer than I have and nothing ever seems to have been too much trouble for her, although I bet she’s done a lot of muttering under her breath when I’ve pushed her to get in more than she felt we need to, but I’ve always known I could rely on her to get each issue out no matter

what. As I said, how wrong could I be, we actually have a bumper issue of 36 pages, Colin having put together enough to cover the 32 pages I suspected we’d need, I then received an email from another regular contributor which immediately meant, if we were to publish any of the items she had sent us, we would have to increase page numbers yet again, hence why this issue is so thick!! We hope you like the 4 page spread of colour pictures most of which are of the ‘Flower’ Show although there are a few from the school fete that we thought you might like to see as well. The Show pictures are a combined effort of our own photographer ‘Snappy’ and the Show Committee’s official photographer Adelle McCarthy. All of their photos will be available on the Show website at www.minstershow.org.uk within a week or two, depending on my workload, so don’t expect to find them in the next day or so, it just won’t happen !! Another great Show about which I’m sure we’ll be given lots to publish next month, however I’d just like to take this opportunity to say a sincere thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand and said what a great job we do, it’s that sort of feedback that makes, the monthly hair pulling, cursing and swearing all worth while. Continuing the saga of my left wrist, recovery from my recent op is going well, except wearing a cast in the heat wave we’ve been having has, to say the least, been extremely uncomfortable at times, but by the time you read this the plaster should be off and hopefully I’ll be able to get out and about again in my car, can’t wait, I’ve got blisters from walking everywhere! (and they hurt!!) If you’ve got this far then thank you for your perseverance in wading through my monthly waffle, luckily for you there’s literally, just room to ask “What’s my dog (Zac) got to gripe about this month?”

MM CLASSIFIEDS This is your chance to get something for nothing from us here at MM. We’re offering you free space for your small classifieds. So, do you have something to sell, or is there an item you’d like to find? We take both offered and wanted small ads here. Just jot them down, email them to us or leave us a note at the library, we’ll be pleased to print them for you.

HEDGE CUTTING, TREE FELLING, BIRDS NESTING

It has got round to that time of the year when birds are nesting and raising young families. It is also the time when many of us think about hedge cutting or trimming back our trees. So here is a timely reminder of how you stand with the law if you have birds nesting on your property. We have copied the following from the RSPB website.

Greens of Minster Fruit&Veg ~ Flowers&Plants ~ Sweets&Gifts

“Under Section One of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981), it is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built - which is also referred to as an 'active' nest. A nest is considered active as soon as the first twig, or other nesting material, has been added to the nest site. If you know that there is a nest being built or occupied, you would have to delay the work until after the birds have bred. Blackbirds for instance often have three broods. After laying, the eggs take 13-14 days to incubate. After that, the newly hatched nestlings will take a further 13-14 days to fledge and leave the nest. So, if each brood takes approximately one month to fledge and the pair have three broods, the nest will be deemed active for around three months. If you are planning any tree cutting, hedge trimming or other garden maintenance, always check beforehand that there are no active nests present. If you see birds carrying nesting material or food items into a hedge, bush or tree, you can be pretty sure that there is a nest within. Remember also that certain species have been known to nest in every month of the year, so always check first! If you see anyone potentially damaging or destroying a known nest, you should contact the Investigations Unit at the RSPB on 01767 680 551 or report the incident online at www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/policy/wildbirdslaw/report.asp

Many thanks to all those who visited us at The Show Order a regular fruit/veg box with us today, (all budgets catered for). Includes FREE Delivery. Visit us in store, online at www.greensofminster.com, telephone or email: mail@greensofminster.com

24a Monkton Road, Minster 01843 822212

You can of course remain anonymous.” So remember, check first before cutting that hedge or before lopping branches from that tree, you will be breaking the law if birds are nesting in them and you could well find yourself in serious trouble if you go ahead and disturb them. Even if you’ve applied to the local council for permission to remove part or all of a tree, this permission, if given, doesn’t over-ride Section One of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) so, look and think before you cut, you never know who may be watching!!!!

Healthy Eating Week 3 -7 June We are proud to say that Minster School took part in the first Healthy Eating Week, organised by the British Heart Foundation. We focused on our children having a healthy lifestyle, incorporating eating, exercise, and keeping safe. What a fantastic week we had! The staff and children all had a great week, and we were very lucky with the weather! 1L/ On Monday, it was really fantastic to see children trying different activities on the all-weather pitch; I was impressed with how children were practicing their MPG CARPET CLEANING balancing skills, walking on the 'stilts', counting how many times they could bounce (small local family run business) the ball on a bat. Deanery Mass On Sunday 14th July we celebrated, together with around 400 friends, the Deanery Mass in honour of

our patron St Mildred . It is always a joy for us, on this special occasion, to return to the Church of St Mary the Virgin, the site where St Domneva, Mildred's mother founded her Minster (Monastery) in 670. This year we were delighted to welcome our Apostolic Nuncio-the representative of Pope Francis in Britain- Archbishop Antonio Mennini as Chief Celebrant. Our united choir formed from several churches provided sacred music worthy of the celebrations and prayer filled setting. It was a delight to see so many of our young people actively engaged in the ceremonies this year, under the skilful guidance of Fr Marcus. During the service Fr Vissarion from the Greek Orthodox Church in Margate incensed the relic of St Mildred with chants in the Orthodox tradition. For many of us the chanting of two pieces of Gregorian music constituted a real highlight. These chants come from an original document, dated 1093 of Goscelin's Life of St Mildred, kept in the British Library. Goscelin was a monk and historian of St Augustine's Abbey Canterbury. Helen Nattress of the Gregorian Chant Society, Canterbury, Mark Bateson and our Mother Nikola worked very hard to bring these beautiful pieces to life once more in St Mary's for the first time since the Reformation! One of the chants is sung daily at the Abbey, by the sisters, in English to a modern tune and translates roughly as the following: “ Rejoice O glorious Virgin, In Christ is all our Joy. Most sweet and gracious Mildred, illustrious child of Kings. Pearl of the woodland Kingdom, Crown of Kent's royal race. Most radiant star of England. Hear O hear our prayer. The sisters would like to thank all those who helped in anyway to make this occasion so wonderful! Tea after wards at Parkminster rounded off the day and the sun never ceased to shine.

Prompt at 7.30 on 9 July in the Village Hall, President Marion Rose, welcomed members, visitors and guests to the monthly meeting and invited everyone to sing Jerusalem. Pointing out that the Minutes of the June meeting and the Treasurer's Report were displayed on the ‘Notice Boards’ table, Marion opened the proceedings with news of the Wl's Minster Show stall and float. The stall will be "fruity and tarty" this year with jam, cake, fruit tart (anything fruit based) contributions needed. She invited volunteers attending the float to sign up etc. Marion then outlined a proposed Felt-making Day in October for up to 10 members (needing to know how many members would be interested). This year’s Dabble Days have been arranged for Saturday 9 November with various courses on offer. Members were invited to indicate their preference: sugar craft, fabric wreath or box making, flower arranging or garland and table decoration making. Following Cathey's update on the WI stall at Thanet at War (27/28 July at Government Acre, Ramsgate), Marion Bullard introduced the speaker. Matthew Collins' talk entitled ‘Shakespeare to Supermarkets’ was so enthralling - with very amusing stories about his period in the BBC 2 Travel Show, tips on bargain shopping and travels with his sons - that everyone was sorry when his time was up! Refreshment break over, Marion asked Helen Ulrich, Minster's representative, to report on the National AGM held at Cardiff in June. Marion then outlined the Twinning Visit to Quex in September and appealed to members to wear pink at the October meeting in aid of the QEQM Mammography Appeal. Prior to the Raffle, Marion reminded members of Minster WI's AGM in November and the need for committee member volunteers. This particularly busy, entertaining meeting closed at 9.45pm. NEXT MEETING: 10 September Speaker, Martin Gurdon "Confessions of a Motoring Journalist''

Minster Bowls Club “Happiness, Happiness, Thank the Lord for Happiness” This was the theme of the day when the club opened its green to teams of non-bowlers from the village, thanks to the sponsorship of Jonathan Cole of W.S. Cole & Son Ltd. The club have to thank Brian and Sylvia Davis once again for contacting teams and organising the day. Their efforts resulted in 28 teams entering this year which was 4 more than usual. Each of the 28 teams played 2 games apiece before the knockout stages kicked in. The 14 top teams then went on to play for the main prize of £350 and the Cup, whilst the 14 losing teams battled it out for the only other prize of £175 and the Plate. Overall winners of this year’s event were a very worthy ‘Holdentech’ who are donating their £350 to the RSPCA, whilst the team ‘3+1’ will be donating their £175 to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. This Autumn, following the success of Blithe Spirit last year, Minster Playhouse will be putting on another full length play, The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde. This, the most popular of Wilde’s plays, is set in the late nineteenth century and tells the story of two young men wooing two girls, while the author pokes fun at the behaviour and hypocrisies of the chattering classes of the time. No one escapes – the Aristocracy, the Church, the Middle Class are all targets for Wilde’s wit. This is Oscar Wilde at his lightest and funniest, and provides an evening of relaxed and cheerful escapism for the audience. This production features a mix of the Playhouse’s superb “old guard” of acting talent along with Eliot Eaton-Brown playing Algernon, and newcomer Marcus Hogben as Dr. Chasuble. Direction is by David Downes-Powell who directed Blithe Spirit, and runs from the 25 to 28 September, 7.30pm in Minster Village Hall. Tickets are available from the Box Office, tel 220208, and more details are on the website at www.minsterplayhouse.co.uk More ways to contact your Neighbourhood Police Officer As part of a new initiative, Police Contact Points have been launched in the east of the county in July, and will come to West Kent in August, and North Kent in September. Police Contact Points are held each day from Wednesday through to Sunday, mainly in rural locations, on a rolling two-week schedule. Our police vans stop at a prominent location for one and a half hours per visit, enabling residents to drop by and speak to a neighbourhood officer about any policing concerns or issues they may have. The new Contact Points are in addition to the existing surgeries, meetings and online question and answer sessions local officers hold each month. The contact points are currently available in Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Shepway and Thanet and by the autumn will be available across the county. Residents can follow their progress on dedicated Twitter accounts. For times and locations of the Police Contact Points, and to find out about other ways of contacting Kent Police in your area, please visit the Kent Police website www.kent.police.uk and follow the links from the home page. CharityGiving website suspended – charity regulator acts to protect public donations (Immediate release 12 July 2013) The online giving website www.charitygiving.co.uk has today been suspended. In order to protect funds the public has raised and prevent further charitable pledges being made via the website whilst the Charity Commission’s investigation continues the decision has been taken to suspend the CharityGiving online portal with immediate effect. The action was taken by the charity’s interim manager after careful consideration and consultation with the Charity Commission as part of the Commission’s statutory inquiry into The Dove Trust. CharityGiving is an online fundraising portal run by The Dove Trust (registered charity number 287401). See more at: http://minmatt.info/charitygiving

We have new tenants at The Bell, Ken and Fiona, who assure us they are here for ‘the long haul’. They have recently replaced Dave and Ali, who were only here as interim managers until Enterprise Inns were able to find new tenants, and they are listening to the pub regulars. They’ve already replaced the brasses and the pictures that were found out the back in the shed, plus they have been given further framed pictures of Minster, which came from the museum, by a very kind local resident and these are already adorning the walls. The curtains too, will soon be going back up to replace the not so popular swags. Fiona tells MM that they are offering traditional pub grub at sensible prices with the added bonus of up to 20% off for senior citizens EVERY DAY!! It is their intention to make a real good go of bringing back the atmosphere, ambience and hospitality that we were all so used to in the past. So please pop in and say hello, give them a fair chance to prove themselves and encourage the support of your friends and neighbours to make this a regular venue on their itinerary. Fiona also that says she and Ken would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed in getting the pub back to looking as it was. Editors note: Fiona might be a bit scatty but she makes a great cup of tea and their dogs, 2 very young Irish Wolfhounds, are absolutely adorable. Note: The Bell Inn has had another change of telephone number – it is now 826391 Did you have a ‘Rotary Washing Line’ from us? We gave a rotary washing line away free, and unfortunately forgot to include the piece that keeps the washing line up! So if the person who took the line is reading this, we have the piece for you if you would like to call and collect it". Wendy Stilwell, 1 Kenton Gardens, Minster

OPEN GARDENS THANK YOU Dear Villagers, On behalf of St. Mary’s Church we would like to thank everybody who supported the Open Gardens this year. The Gardeners all worked extremely hard and our immense gratitude must go to them, also to all those that helped behind the scenes in any way. We raised a fantastic sum of £3,452 towards the fabric of our Parish Church. It was a wonderful weekend with the weather fine for most of the time and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. We have had a lot of comments from people who are not residents saying that the Village hospitality was great. So thank you to you all. Sue Jezzard and Pat Hogben St.Mary’s Church, Minster

Thank you to all who helped or came to the Summer Market We raised £700 towards repairing the Saxon Tower of the Church

Water safety (Taken from the Kent Fire and Safety Website)

We are regularly called out to save people who get into difficulty while swimming in Kent's rivers and lakes. They are caught out because the water is not as safe as it looks, and is full of dangers they can’t see: · The water is often far deeper that people think. ·

It's very cold, and can quickly cause cramp and breathing difficulties.

·

It may contain hidden rubbish and debris such as shopping trolleys and broken glass which can cause injuries and drowning.

·

Sometimes it can it can be polluted and makes them very ill.

During the school holidays, and in particular in hot weather, increasing numbers of children are drowning. On average, there are 50 of these tragedies each year in the UK. If you do decide to swim in a lake or river, make sure you keep yourself as safe as possible... · Don't jump or dive in, as the water can be far deeper than it looks - with unseen hazards. ·

Never swim near weirs or locks as there are often dangerous currents.

·

Always make sure someone on land knows you are swimming.

URGENT! Recipes Needed for Minster Village Cookbook!

We would like to produce a cookbook with recipes and accompanying photographs from the villagers of Minster. We are looking for all your favourite recipes. These may have been passed down through the generations or just found in the latest magazines. Maybe you have tried something from a TV chef or invented your own delicious dish. If you have anything you would like to share we would be glad to hear from you. The idea is that once all recipes have been gathered we would choose a selection to enter in the book and those chosen would be asked to prepare their recipe for a ‘taster evening’ on late night shopping night at the Old Schools when we would hope to launch the book. We think this would be a fun way for all to raise funds for much needed repairs to our beautiful Parish church. If you think you would like to be included and have your name in a published book please send a copy of your recipe, with your name and contact details, along with a photograph if you have one of your dish to sjezzard@gmail.com. Or drop it in at the old schools in the box marked Village Recipes. THE CLOSING DATE IS 31 AUGUST 2013

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION A slightly delayed feedback following an editorial glitch, however, welcome back to an update of events since the June issue of MM. The 15th Anniversary Day celebrations in Armbouts Cappel followed this pattern: We duly arrived in Armbouts Cappel to lovely sunshine with the centre of the village closed off due to the enormous boot fair that was being held outside everyone’s homes. We alighted in the school car park on the outskirts and were met by smiling faces of the AC committee and friends, and the Carnival Court (who had travelled under their own steam much earlier). Hugs and kisses all round! The Thanet ATC as smart as always, played us into the Mairie where champagne and nibbles were set out for us. The Mayor gave a speech and the Thanet ATC was presented with a wonderful ceremonial mace decorated with miniature planes from yesteryear. This was made by Jean Bonduelle, the President of the Twinning Association in AC and he even had to buy the fine cord to adorn it, from Morocco. The ATC presented some Spitfire models to the French people and this was gratefully received by the Mayor. Two framed paintings, one depicting a windmill standing proud in a field of pretty wild flowers and the other of people dressed up and in carnival mode, were given to Minster and an aerial view of Minster village, kindly donated by Barbara and John Quittenden from Minster Garage was presented to AC. Roy and Carol Bailey’s Carnival Court did an elaborate curtsey for the Mayor as a gesture of their appreciation of their visit. We proceeded to the Mairie and we were served with a delicious lunch and some very tasty wine. THANK YOU to our French friends. A large number of villagers entered the hall at 2.30pm and the local dancing school in the finest of costumes amazed us with their innovative display of various dances. How talented they were. I think the ages ranged from 3ish to late teens, but the total repertoire was very professionally executed. The finale to the show was the precision playing of the ATC from Thanet, much to the pleasure of all. All too soon, the day ended and a tired but happy party arrived back in the village. On Saturday 8 June, we were all deliberating about how the weather would be the following day, (our Fun Day), as the previous 2 years had seen rain, rain and yet more rain. Pleasantly surprised by the dry atmosphere, we all set up shop in the Rec. On the down side, we were rather surprised about the lack of support from the village despite advertising in MM, roadside signs, local paper, facebook, shops and notice boards. On the upside, those that did turn up seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time there. The bouncy castle, as always, was very successful with the younger contingency. The bowling and stocks created a fun atmosphere. We would like to thank the willing volunteers for the stocks, Malcolm Bubb in snorkel and flippers, Jonathan Cole, soaked to the skin and ‘Monk’ Richard Mills (dragged screaming to the stocks by his family) all of whom took the constant flow of wet sponges. Mission accomplished – all were suitably drenched! The Gazette photographer captured the moments well. Thanks go to: ∙ All the car boots and stalls for leaving the Rec in

pristine condition. ∙ Roy and Carol Bailey’s Carnival Court who helped sell raffle tickets. Who could refuse such lovely girls? ∙ The musical entertainment which was popular and of a very high standard. ∙ Royal British Legion for the bar. ∙ The burger van for hot food, ice cream bike for the stronger willed. ∙ The committee and supporters who worked at the front and behind the scenes and for their commitment and hard work to the lead-up to the Fun Day and the actual day itself. ∙ All businesses and friends who gave so generously to the raffle. The finale to the day was the Grand Raffle which was drawn by Miss Minster. The weeks holiday, kindly donated by Foxhunter 5* Caravan Park, was won by Brian Yost who comes from Gloucestershire and he can take up to 5 more people with him in the luxury caravan. What a prize! The final list of all raffle winners is displayed in Attwell’s Newsagents window. A very big THANK YOU goes to the Thanet District Council who invited representatives of the Association to an Award Presentation Day on Thursday 13 June to present us with a cheque for £500 for all our efforts for the Fun Day. This was very much appreciated and was offset against our expenditure, so the overall profit of the day was £645. Thank you, a very good result all round. Carol Bubb

Editors this month Beatrice Cocks and Ebony O’Reilly Class teachers that I have had: I had Mrs. Pain in year R Miss Smith in year 1 Miss Koboleskey in year 2 (sorry about the spelling) Mrs. Hodges in year 3 Miss Wood in year 4 Miss Theoff in year 5 Miss Pout at the beginning of year 6 And I now have Miss Wilkinson in year 6 All these teachers were the best they were so kind and I have to say I have no favourite! By Ebony O’Reilly

So far me and my mum have collected 13 gnomes , we have one 3ft gnome called Malcolm , one gnome on a swing called Gregory , and little gnomes called Blueberry ,Trevor, Bobby , Blackcurrant, Mike, Timothy, Strawberry, Fabio ,Dandy ,Bruce and Flowerpots. The Dog called Ellie

There was a dog called Ellie Who came out very smelly Then she had a wash And finally came out posh And then people said “gosh!” So, she had a plateful of jelly Then she had a colossal belly She grew plump cheeks And grew a beak And turned into a bird She sat down on a chair Lunch, Breakfast, Dinner and Snacks Ate a pear Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it And turned out as a bear wakes you up ready for the day ahead. She sat on her mat Lunch is just a time for food so you don’t get hungry throughout While playing with her toy rat the day. Lunch is usually around midday. She turned round into a cat Dinner is the last meal of the day. We usually have dinner in the There was a pillar evening. And a boy called Dilla Snacks are what we eat if we fancy a little bit of food. Who came as a gorilla You can have drinks with all of these food times. She became a granny Remember to always have your 5 a day! She called her flannels flanny By Annabelle Fleming And married a Grandpa called Danny. And again she became a dog. Leavers versus Stayers By Olivia Ringrose 18th July 2013 Netball tournament. Leavers the score of 8, and Stayers the score of 2. Leavers started off rough but all the We’ve been learning how to RAP!!! cheering from the year 6 lovers made Leavers, strong and bold You can rap about a Cat; you can rap about a dog, to win more points. On Friday the 19th July there was the rugby You can rap about a tree; you can rap about a log. and football tournament, this year not at the same time. Year 3’s Mythical Beast and Romans Day Year 3 did their Mythical Beast for DT which was fun. Some were small, some were big, and all of them were vicious. The teacher was surprised about them and it was a lot of fun as said. Soon it was Romans day and we were all very excited as we were going to be dressed up into Roman costumes. The teacher (Miss Bailey) said that we were going to have an assembly about Romans day and our mythical beast.

Year 6 Year 6 has been really fun that I don’t want to leave it and don’t want to leave my friends and all the lovely teachers. But I’m still looking forward to going to my new school (Sandwich Tech) and looking forward to meeting new people. My transition day is coming up soon I’m scared and excited at the same. By Katrina Jakovleva

Sandwich Technology School! At the end of year 6 I will be going into year 7 and my new secondary school is Sandwich Tec (for short!). I am not excited but only because I love Minster Primary School, all the people are so nice and the teachers are lovely (I remember my first day at Minster and I hung from my mums leg!) But then on the other hand I am excited because I am sure I will make new friends, and also I am going with my best friend Annabelle (she’s lovely). Anyway next week we have 2 transition days Thursday 11th July and Friday 12th July. I will really miss Minster Primary but remember all the lovely people! By Ebony O’Reilly

THE MEETING OF OLYMPIC TORCHES IN MINSTER Lyndsay Thacker with her Dad’s 1948 Torch and the Editor with his 2012 version

Catholic Parish of Ramsgate and Minster Congratulations to George Gabbett KHS George & Cheryl Gabbett moved to Cliffend from London five years ago. On Saturday, 1st June, at St.George's Cathedral, George was installed as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. This spiritual & military Order was founded by Godfrey de Bouillon in 1099 to protect sites of Christian importance in the Holy Land. The work and members of the Order has varied over the centuries but currently there about 25,000 members worldwide in 50 Lieutenancies. Their present priorities are to fund educational facilities and social housing for the small number of Christians in the Holy Land in these difficult times under the direction of the Latin Patriarch, His Beatitude Fouad Twal. Further information about the Order can be found on the Internet, www.khs.org.uk

East Kent Times and Broadstairs Mail - Wednesday May 17th 1967 Do you recognise anyone in this picture? Especially, who’s the girl on the ‘Cat Walk’? This cutting has been given to us by a local resident who would like to try to find out more about the event and who the girl might be. Does she still live in the village? Who were the 2 ‘elderly ladies’ that appeared at the end of the show in Victorian costume? The text that accompanied the cutting reads: ‘About two dozen Minster women and girls were ‘models for a day’ on Saturday. They were taking part in a spring and summer fashion show at the Parish Hall, organised by the village’s Sports and Social Club to raise funds for a children’s playground. After displays of adult, teenage and children’s fashions the show ended with a tableau in which two elderly village women appeared in Victorian dress.’ Editor’s note: If it helps, you can view a larger version of this picture on our website at: http://minmatt.info/fashion

TRADING STANDARDS Product recall of electrical items Advice: The Intelligence Team at Kent County Council’s Trading Standards Service would like to raise awareness amongst consumers of the importance of product recalls of electrical items. Over the past six years, there have been 266 recall notices for electrical items and the Electrical Safety Council found that typically less than a fifth are ever repaired or returned. If these items are not returned for repair or replacement, they can sometimes be associated with causing fires or personal injury. The Trading Standards Institute has information on its website concerning the latest recalls at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/advice-recalllist.cfm The Electrical Safety Council also provides a free product checker tool on its website at www.esc.org.uk/recall to help owners find out if an appliance has a fault. Also from Trading Standards - Going on holiday soon? Do you know your rights? rail, and now also by ship, bus and coach. 59% of EU air travellers are unaware of their rights while travelling Did you know if you travel by air and you are denied boarding, or if your flight is cancelled without notice or is subject to a more than five hour delay, you can ask for reimbursement or rerouting? 66% of EU citizens are not aware of their contractual rights when buying a transport ticket Did you know that when you book your flight ticket online the final price must be clearly indicated on the first page? One in six Europeans suffers from a disability. One objective of the passenger rights legislation is to allow disabled people and people with reduced mobility to have the same opportunities to travel as other citizens Did you know if you are a passenger with a disability or reduced mobility, you have the right to free assistance before, during and after the flight?
