Leaving A Message As The Hurricane Headed In

Local business owners at least had a sense of humor as they boarded up their premises in the runup to what some were calling a “100-year storm.” Thankfully, Irene wasn’t too mean to the cape, although other areas along the east coast were not so lucky. Jack Wright

The Police Blotter

HUDSON, New York – A Sullivan Road resident called police to report a suspicious package on his front porch. The officer could see the package was clearly labeled with the Amazon. com logo, and asked the man if he had ordered anything from the firm. The answer was yes.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “Politics is like football; if you see daylight, go through the hole.” John F. Kennedy “You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.” Frank Zappa “It’s weird... people say they’re not like apes. Now how do you explain football then?” Mitch Hedberg “Football is like life – it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.” Vince Lombardi “Sharks are as tough as those football fans who take their shirts off during games in Chicago in January, only more intelligent.” Dave Barry

In 1890, President Harrison decided that a few days of vacation in Cape May was not enough, and planned to spend the entire summer. Personal friend and Postmaster General in the President’s cabinet, John Wanamaker, had invited President Harrison to summer in Cape May and Congress Hall was chosen to be the Summer White House. The honor was repeated in 1891, when the 23rd President of the United States again transformed Congress Hall into his Summer White House. Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

Fumblerooski – This trick play, used by the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers against the University of Miami Hurricanes in the 1984 Orange Bowl, was invented by John Heisman. The quarterback deliberately places the ball on the ground, technically fumbling it, the backs run right, then the right guard picks up the ball and runs left.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

The first famous Super Bowl commercial was aired in 1974. It was an ad for Noxzema Cleansing Cream, and it featured New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath. The commercial also included former Miss Sweden Gunilla Knutson, not to be confused with the later famous ad featuring Farrah Fawcett.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “We must always have old memories and young hopes. ” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with Kung Pao chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor

R

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ELIEF... that’s the predominant feeling in this area right now, after a hurricane that was being touted as the storm of the century did little damage to the Cape Mays. Like many of you, I had feared much worse. I wrote a column on Saturday afternoon and sent the paper to the printer, two days ahead of schedule, because I was so sure the island would have no power come Monday, our regular deadline day. I was one of the folks who didn’t heed the evacuation order, though I can’t believe I was one of only 2%. I have no idea how Governor Chris Christie came up with the statistic that 98% of Cape May County residents followed his evacuation order, but it doesn’t even seem close to being accurate. I stayed behind because I couldn’t understand why my home, more than a mile from the beachfront and not in a flooding zone, was any more at risk than a home in North Jersey, New York or Philadelphia. And I figured it was a bad idea to try and take two dogs and a cat to a shelter that was likely going to be subject to the same kind of winds as my own home was. This is why I thought Governor Christie’s evacuation order was over-the-top. People are congratulating the authorities for organizing a trouble-free evacuation, but I think it was trouble-free despite the authorities, not because of them. If every resident had heeded the governor’s order and left at 8am on Friday morning, the Garden State Parkway would have been a zoo. Instead, people used their own judgement and left in a more staggered fashion, some on Friday afternoon, some in the evening, and quite a few on Saturday morning. But, then, I thought that just about everything Irene-related was over-the-

top. Governor Christie reacted to reports of people enjoying the sands of Asbury Park on Friday afternoon by ranting, “You’re done. It’s 4:30pm. You’ve maximized your tan. Get the hell off the beach!” I understand the governor’s frustration that not everyone was cowering under his Tony Sopranoesque leadership style, but I can’t blame anyone for enjoying beach time when the storm was 36 hours away. What was the alternative? To get on the parkway and sit in a 20-mile line of traffic for five or six hours? Then there was the shamefully sensationalist comment from the county’s Emergency Management Coordinator Frank McCall: “Take a 3x5 card and with an indelible marker, write down your name, address, Social Security number, and next of kin. Put on tie shoes and fold up the card and put it in the bottom of your left shoe so we can identify you when the hurricane is over.” Really, Frank? This is what you call leadership in a time of crisis? If you were trying to put the fear of death into senior citizens and children, you did a good job. If you were auditioning for Clown of the Year, ditto.

Maybe we can’t blame their over-reactions. Twitter and Facebook have turned us into a society that thrives on gossip and conjecture. Thoughts that used to remain in our heads can now be shared with thousands of people, just like that. And they actually get debated! It’s the same mindset that has turned The Weather Channel into an obnoxious orgy of weather-porn. Forget trying to get actual information on that channel – all you get is incessant chatting about how “incredible... remarkable... amazing” Irene was. Not once did they actually tell me, during the five or six total hours I watched, when Irene would strike Jersey. That would have been good to know. I’m glad we were spared the worst of Irene, I’m sorry for the folks who were hit by flooding in other parts of the east coast, and I agree that it’s better to be safe than sorry. But no one can stop me thinking that we turned a powerful hurricane into something approaching armageddon. THE Ugly Mug’s Froth-blowing contest was postponed because of Irene and has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 11. On the subject of the Mug, I’d like to follow up on a cryptic line or two I wrote in Ramblings a few weeks ago. I appeared at Cape May Municipal Court last week before a nice man called Judge Louis Belasco, in connection with a Manhattan-fueled piece of tomfoolery outside the Mug a few weeks ago. And when I say Manhattan, I mean the really strong cocktail, not the metropolis. Suffice to say, I acted like a jerk and would like to make a public apology (to supplement the private apologies already made) to a couple good guys at the Mug, and the Class II police officers who saw a side of me that I hope never appears again. Damn that evil twin.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about football. This week’s winner is Karen McKee, 56, a legal secretary from Cape May. We found Karen strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Who’s the football player that throws the ball? Quarterback. Who is your favorite professional football team? Eagles. How many points do you get for a safety? Um, I think it’s two? Karen wins a $50 gift certificate to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

W

eren’t we just doing the Memorial Day issue? Why do summers seem to get shorter and shorter? Why do fools fall in love? We’ll leave you to ponder these questions while we offer our last column of the season – the “Labor Day Cookout!” We hope you have enjoyed our suggestions for your Cape May summer kitchen, and tried some of the recipes, too. Let the summer of 2011 conclude with a major grill extravaganza! We’ll get you going with a variety of marinades for your choice of meat, fish or chicken. The right marinade can provide sweetness or tang to an everyday dish, punch up an old stand-by with spicy flair, or turn a budget cut of meat into a tender meal. Acidic marinades (vinegar, wine, citrus) tenderize and flavor; oil marinades add moisture to fish and lean cuts; and dry marinades provide a bold savory crust. Each of the following marinated main courses makes for a satisfying meal; or pull out all the stops (and empty the freezer) by serving a mixed grill. A delicious recipe for grilled corn will round out the meal.

¼ c olive oil 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs, oregano, parsley and/or rosemary ½ tsp fresh ground pepper Combine all ingredients with a whisk and pour over meat in a non-reactive bowl or dish. Simon and Garfunkel Herb Marinade for Salmon and Other Firm-Fleshed Fish about a cup Try an herb blend of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Chervil, chives, rosemary, oregano also work well in this recipe, just not as well in a song title! You can also use this marinade with chicken. 2 tbsp fresh herbs, chopped fine ¾ c olive oil 3 tbsp tarragon vinegar 1 garlic clove, crushed, ½ red onion, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper Whisk the chopped herbs with the oil and vinegar. Stir in the garlic and onion and add salt and pepper to taste. Pour over fish and place, covered, in refrigerator for 4-6 hours.

Doc’s Balsamic Marinade for Beef and Lamb 1 ½ cups We used to make this sweet and rich marinade with Doc’s Own, a red table wine produced by a psychiatrist turned vintner. Doc is out of business, but the marinade is still great with whatever red wine you have available. Marinate meat for 2 hours at room temperature, more in refrigerator. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before grilling. 1 c dry red wine ¼ c balsamic vinegar

Cape May Cooks ? From Page 45 the spice mixture to coat. Let stand 30 minutes and grill until wings are cooked through with a blackened, crispy skin, about 15 minutes. Serve with lime wedges. Use thighs instead, if you prefer.

Max’s BBQ Corn for a Crowd for 12 ears of corn 2-3 hours soaking plus 45 minutes prep and grilling It’s Labor Day – enjoy grilled corn on the cob one more time! Our friend Max, the Jefferson Street lifeguard, cooks these up by the dozen. Adjust the seasoning to your own taste.

4 tbsp paprika 4 tbsp chili powder 4 tbsp dried oregano 2 tsp salt 2 tsp ground black pepper Mix the ingredients in a large bowl. Margarita Pork Tenderloin serves 6 1 hour, 10 minutes This one is always a hit. It’s great served with black beans and rice. 1 green onion, minced 2-3 garlic cloves, minced ½ jalapeno pepper, minced 3 tbsp fresh cilantro 2 tbsp fresh lime juice 1 ½ tbsp tequila 1 tbsp fresh orange juice 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground cumin 2 one-pound pork tenderloins Combine all ingredients except the pork in a large zip-top plastic freezer bag, or in a shallow dish. Cut the porch diagonally into 1-inch thick slices and add to marinade. Seal (or cover) and chill one hour or more, turning occasionally. Remove pork from marinade. Grill, covered with grill lid, over high heat (400-500 degrees) for 3-4 minutes per side, or until done.

2 tbsp salt 2 tbsp pepper 1 tbsp onion powder 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cayenne 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp dry mustard 1 c grated parmesan cheese 2 sticks of butter Soak the corn in the husks (do not shuck) in a large pot of cold water for 2-3 hours. In a bowl, mix the salt, pepper and spices and put in a container with a shaker top, such as an empty spice bottle. If the cheese is not in a shaker, put it in a similar container as well. Heat the grill to 350 degrees or a medium fire. Put the corn on the grill still in the husks and cook for 25 minutes, turning once. Remove the corn from the grill and let it cool for a few minutes while you melt the butter. Carefully pull the husks and silk back, but do not remove entirely. Twist the remaining husks at the base to form a handle for eating. Brush the corn liberally with the melted butter and sprinkle with the spice mixture and grated cheese. Return to grill for one minute on each side and enjoy!

The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick

Oball From Toy Shop Of Cape May

Football Books From Sports Memorabilia

Eagles Flag From Import Bazaar

We really love the tagline of this colorful football by Rhino Toys at Toy Shoppe of Cape May: “Oball – It’s Catchy.” Easy to throw, easy to catch (anyone can do it, Toy Shoppe staff tells us), brightly colored and get this – dishwasher safe. So no clean-up worries from all those germy little ones’ hands – and big ones too. $8.99. 510 Washington Street, 609-884-0442.

Bone up on your football trivia with one of these vintage books from Cape May Sports Memorabilia at Antiques Emporia. Classic NFL team yearbooks, as well as old titles from such names as the “Tales From The Sidelines” series and “Who’s Who In Football” can be found here, and book prices range from $8 to $25. 405 West Perry Street, West Cape May, 609-898-3332.

Mark your favorite team territory with Eagles green when you fly this 2-sided, 44 x 22” flag from Import Bazaar at your house on game day. (And for all you baseball fans, they have a great Phillies one too, so you may want to fly them both until after the Phils take the World Series.) $26.99. 306 Washington Street, 609-884-4999, www.capemaybazaar.com.

Nuts From Morrow’s Nut House

BBQ Grill From Swain’s Hardware

Wings From C-View

You’ll need something to munch on and soak up some of that beer, and nuts are just the thing. One visit to either Morrow’s location and you’ll be squared away – peanuts, cashews, filberts, Brazil nuts and macadamias, just to name a few – something for everyone on your guest list. $6-18/lb. 722 Beach Drive or 321 Washington Street, 609-8843300, www.morrowscapemay.com.

Looking for heartier fare than some nuts for the game? Pick up one of these Weber Char “Q” Gas Grills from our friends at Swain’s and throw on some burgers – they’re just the perfect size for tailgating. Swain’s has two sizes, depending upon how many football fanatics have in your life. $159-199. 305 Jackson Street, 609-884-8578, www.swainsacehardware.com.

Okay, so you’re not the grilling type. No worries – let the C-View do the food for you. We don’t have to tell you that their wings are legendary, and if you’re having the gang over on a Sunday, just order a bunch of wings to go. Or save the wear and tear on your man cave and just watch the game there – it’s always a good crowd. $7.95 for ten. 1380 Washington Street, 609-884-4712.

Customer Service

N

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

ext week, I’m attending my great-aunt Helen’s 90th birthday party. She doesn’t want a party; she wants to die. She keeps a gun behind a ceramic statue of the Virgin Mary in her closet and she swears if the Lord doesn’t take her soon, she will kill herself. She also thinks that I’m a lesbian, because at 25, I’m still unmarried. I’m supposed to drive to the party with my father, who’s not currently speaking with me because I stopped going to church or voted for Obama or something. The day should be a hoot. This summer, this is par for the course. I know that every family has its ups and downs but recently, my family has only had downs. In the last few months, there have been health scares, broken engagements, deaths (though not Aunt Helen’s, ironically), and general misery in the Stone household. Part of the problem is that the members of my family only have two settings – happy and angry. So when things go poorly, PO’ed becomes the MO. Many of the arguments between us have been of the you-shut-up-no-

you-shut-up sort. I’ve spent most of August convinced that I’m adopted; I can’t possibly share DNA with these Looney Toons. And at work, I feel as though I’m from the craziest house on Cape Island. So many of the families I wait on are pleasant and happy – not necessarily with the food or the service, of course, but with each other. They laugh, they toast, they open birthday cards. Hell, the fact that they come to the restaurant together at all floors me a little; the four members of my immediate family haven’t even eaten dinner in the same room lately, let alone at the same table. The folks I waited on last night, two elderly parents and their grown children,

looked like the kind of family you’d see printed on the front of a board game’s cardboard box, with a bowl of popcorn and an aged but healthy Golden Retriever in the background. There seemed to be a lot of reminiscing happening at the table, and I found myself slightly jealous. Wouldn’t it be nice, I thought, if my own family could get our act together long enough to share a meal without a suicide threat. At the end of the dinner, only one guest remained at the table. Everyone else had gone to find a bathroom, a valet, or the coat check. I reached across the table to refill her water glass, and she started to laugh, an exasperated kind of laugh. “Sometimes,” she said, “I swear I must be adopted.” That’s when it occurred to me – even the most together-looking of families has its ups and downs. No Cape May clan is perfect; dysfunction is inevitable. Sometimes, when it comes to breaking bread with our kin, all a girl can do is grin and bear it.Because as much as you dislike each other, you love one another, too. That’s what it means to be a family, after all. Even the Looney Toon kind.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My brother is really driving me crazy. I live on my own, but he still lives with my parents. He just turned 18 and graduated from high school, but he has just been goofing off all summer long. He does nothing around the house, he pays no rent, and my mom is at her wit’s end. I feel mad at him and bad for them – what can I do about this? – Peeved Dear Peeved Sigh. While the Answer Lady understands your urge to kick your brother’s lazy butt, you know she cannot recommend such uncivilized behavior, tempting as it is – for both of us. It is your parents’ house, and they are in charge. Does this mean that you sit idly by while he runs roughshod over them? No, of course not. Perhaps your brother just needs some prodding, as opposed to buttkicking. The only better time to find a job in

Cape May than the beginning of the summer is the end of the summer – younger workers and snow birds alike are abandoning their posts at restaurants, shops and offices all over town to head off to college/Florida. Maybe you can say to him, “Hey, Riley – I was walking along the Washington Street Mall last night and there is a ‘Help Wanted’ sign in every window. Why don’t you look into filling out an application somewhere?” Better yet, pick up a couple for him. Do not, by the way, vent to your parents about this – they are

already no doubt painfully aware of the situation. Continue to be a good and devoted son, and set an example for your brother. (And if that doesn’t help within six months, then you can revisit kicking his butt.) Dear Answer Lady My cousin was here for a visit recently. I don’t see her much, and now I’m wondering about her. She seems really high-strung, especially when I drove her around town. She was always gasping and putting her foot down on the floor like there was a brake there or something. Should I be concerned? – Country Cousin Dear Country Some people are naturally more highstrung than others. For instance, the Answer Lady’s sister goes into full-blown panic mode any time we set foot in Lucky Bones, for fear they may be out of her favorite veggie burgers (which they never are, thank heavens, because it keeps her grubby paws off the Answer Lady’s pulled-pork nachos). In this case, however, the Answer Lady feels that the only thing you should be concerned about here, gentle reader, is your driving habits.

Chance Meetings

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

I

t was reported recently that men in marriages or relationships live longer than single guys. That makes sense, because single guys don’t have anyone to nag them about going to the doctor. I confess that I don’t like doctors, I fear needles, and I’m probably not going to make an appointment for something that isn’t bleeding, oozing, festering, visibly gangrenous or otherwise about to fall off. And most guys are the same way. But that doesn’t mean that as a single guy I should be discriminated against by the health care system. It’s already hard enough; even a minor procedure requires that I have a friend or relative take the day off work to drive me to and from the doctor’s, pick up prescriptions, and sit around to check on me. And what’s happening to Raymond Johnson in South Carolina is criminal. Raymond, sad to say, has breast cancer. And believe it or not, most health insurance doesn’t cover this disease when it afflicts the male of the species. Seems Medicaid doesn’t cover male

breast cancer, either. And it gets better... well, actually, worse. If Raymond had colorectal cancer, or a brain tumor, he’s not covered for those either. Why? Because he’s an unmarried adult without children. Yup, for a man to qualify for Medicaid (at least for some ailments common to men, like colorectal cancer) he’s got to be poor enough, tied the knot, or slipped a few sperm past the goalie. Based on this alarming news, my quest

to find Ms Right has taken on a whole new urgency. Dinner dates are lovely, but hey, I’m middle aged now, and it’s time to stop messing around. I need to find a wife, fast, before the day a medico slips a finger up my bum and finds something he shouldn’t. Or at the very least, I need to meet a girl who doesn’t mind getting knocked up just so I can take proper advantage of our nation’s fine health care system. My prostate is demanding that I stop using condoms, before it’s too late! Let’s drink to your health – and more importantly, mine – over dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll dine at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. And if things go really well, maybe I’ll end up with better health insurance coverage. Stranger things have happened.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

his modern “football” game is not to my liking. I admit I enjoy the spectacle of those muscled young blades running around grappling with each other, and if I am in the stadium I have to wear a special time-locked seatbelt to prevent me from storming the pitch and taking part myself (I was of course a winner of the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl and Pudding Bowl championships, and the mere smell of sweat and blood and testosterone in the air sends me into a competitive rage). But it’s all rather tame: back in the days when Cape May hosted the Super Bowl every time (something the modern-day records tend to gloss over, for PR reasons), the playing field ran from The Point to the grounds of the Admiral, and from the beach to Stimpson Lane. Both teams fielded as many players as they fancied, with an average of 300, though I remember one year we counted around 1,000 people on the pitch, even though some were a band of marauding pirates who had run aground and sought to pillage (they were the least aggressive of

the players, it must be said, and soon were dispensed with). Rules were rather loose: anything and everything was fair, short of chemical weapons or heavy artillery, and some 50 balls were provided to keep the action flowing. I was a Traditionalist, of course, and wore buckskin shorts and a pair of hobnailed workboots. The rest of me I had greased with pig fat, and my hair was shaved to the bone. In my left hand I carried a knobkerry and in my right, a wicker shop-

ping basket the late Ma D’Catur has used to great effect in the sales at Macy’s: it was woven with razor blades and copper wiring, and could fell an ox if wielded with enough force. Ma wielded it with excess force, I must say with admiration. I remember the time she struck me an affectionate blow with it for daring to question her claim that all women except Ma were Strumpets out to ruin myself and my brothers, and should be tarred and feathered. I did not regain consciousness for a week. So, every week, at Super Bowl (we disliked having to wait a whole year, and played three games a day during the week, and playoffs on a Friday evening) I ventured forth, a greasy demigod with a shopping basket. I scored a lifetime record of 30,000 touchdowns, most achieved by the simple tactics of clubbing anyone who stepped in range, and stuffing the balls into my basket so it looked like I was merely an average Wildwood housewife out for a stroll. By the time people looked twice, I was gone, leaving only greasy footprints and a vaguely pleasing porcine smell in the wind.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Dan Mathers So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: football. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 3. If the offensive team successfully transports the ball 10 yards in four tries, they are awarded one of these. 6. The primary goal in football is to repeatedly score one of these, for which you are awarded six points. 7. At the start of each play, players from each side line up across from one another, careful not to cross this. 9. If a coach disagrees with the ruling on the field, he is able to throw a flag of this color and a challenge the referee’s decision. 10. Whether starting the game, or returning the ball to the other team after scoring, the game restarts with one of these. 14. With few exceptions, offensive players are not allowed to move before the call is snapped, or they’ll receive a penalty for being this. 17. Each game starts with a coin toss where the winning team can choose to kick or receive, select which goal they would like to defend, or this. 19. If you’re feeling risky (or if you’re losing 40-42), you might go for this after scoring.

Hang onto that ball, Peyton... 4 Down.

Down 1. If a player catches a kick, takes a knee and the ball is then reset on the 20-yard line, this has happened. 2. Cross the goal line and maintain possession of the football in this area, and your team will be awarded six points. 4. If a player running the ball drops it before he hits the ground, it is declared this, and any player is free to recover it. 5. If a referee sees an infraction on the field, he will throw a flag of this color as an indicator. 8. Though it is rare to miss from such a short distance, failing to convert one of these can cost your team (if only a little). 9. This category tracks how far your team

has travelled by throwing and catching passes. 11. Kick one of these between the uprights from anywhere on the field, and your team will be awarded three points. 12. While defensive lineman are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want with their hands, an offensive player caught grabbing a jersey will be penalized for this. 13. Tackle an opposing player for one of these, and your team will both score two points and get the ball. 15. An NFL game comprises four quarters, each this many minutes in length. This number is also the distance your team will be penalized if you grab hold of a face mask and pull. 16. Though you’re only allowed to throw the ball forward once per down, you can throw it backwards as many times as you’d like, a pass called this. 18. This category tracks how far your team has travelled by running the ball.

16th Annual David C. Douglass, Sr. Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fund Raiser Day Sunday, October 2, 2011

This event is in memory of Officer Douglass, killed in the line of duty while protecting our community February, 18, 1994. Please let me take just a moment to tell you about Officer Douglass. He had been employed with the Lower Township Police Department, was a volunteer firefighter, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team, worked with the K-9 Units, was a firearms instructor and active in many of our local organizations. David was a remarkable man who thought nothing of taking the time to help his friends, neighbors and local children with anything that they needed. David was dispatched to a call of smoke in our local area of North Cape May on the evening of February 18, 1994. Upon arriving at the scene, he witnessed a man running from the property. He was pursuing the subject on foot, when sadly David was fired upon by the subject. David died that evening brutally and senselessly leaving behind his wife, Debbie and three children, David Jr., Cortney and Tina. We shall never forget David or the sacrifice he made for our safety. Please join us in giving back to the community in Dave’s honor. We are pleased to announce that year to date this program is responsible for over $89,000 in awarded scholarships to local students in the community.

Activity Of The Week

W

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: AirFest at Naval Air Station

ho says an aviation museum has no place in a Victorian vacation? Aviation is a product of the Victorian age. The Wright brothers, like millions of children of the era, believed in the power of invention to improve daily life. While the light bulb, telegraph and steam engine (and air conditioning) were changing the world, the Wright brothers were growing up in a house full of books and parents who encouraged creativity. Their father gave them a flying toy made of cork and rubber bands, sparking their interest in the work of aeronautical pioneer Alphonse Penaud. The brothers atttempted ever-larger versions of the toy, consoling themselves with their trusty kites whenever an enterprise failed, and eventually graduated to flying machine experiments. Queen Victoria was still on her throne when the Wrights began to demonstrate that manned flight was possible. By 1903, when the Wright Flyer soared for 59 seconds over the bluffs of North Carolina, Queen Victoria’s son was on the English throne, the young Theodore

Roosevelt was in the White House, and a new generation of innovators were flying into the 20th century. By 1908, the Wright Brothers had a contract with the US Army and their planes were the world’s first military aircraft. Military aviation has since advanced beyond their imagination. These advances are

showcased at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, in Hangar 1 at the Cape May Airport. NAS Wildwood served as a World War II dive-bomber training center, and the Museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished training there between 1943 and 1945. The Museum is worth a visit any time, and open daily from 9am-5pm. Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for children 3-12. Historic aircraft, military memorabilia, glimpses of life on the home front, and interactive exhibits fill the hangar, and there’s little you can’t touch or climb on or pose for pictures in. It’s a great rainy day activity, but less crowded on sunny days. The History Channel buff in your crew will love it. From August 31 to September 2, the museum hosts the 15th Annual AirFest. This fundraising event has music, food, famous touring WWII aircraft, even a car show on Friday. See the P-51 Mustang and B-17 Flying Fortress, among others, courtesy of the Collings Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the machines that helped build the world. Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Patricia Link, DVM

Name: Charles Bloom Occupation: Manager, Sunset Beach Grille Age: 58 Hometown: I was born in Margate, now I live in North Cape May. How long have you worked here? This is my third season at the Grille. Best thing about the job? The weather, the view and the staff. What do you recommend here? Everything we have is excellent. What’s your OTHER dream job? I was a doorman at Trump Plaza for years, but I couldn’t take being outside in the cold anymore. Otherwise I’d still be doing that. Favorite thing about Cape May? It’s hard to say – the architecture, the pristine beaches, and the people are really friendly. Interview by Kate Chadwick Want to nominate an employee of the week? Email kate@exitzero.us.

Tiki came to us covered with bite wounds which have since healed. While he has lots of nervous energy and doesn’t know any commands, he wants so much to please everyone. Tiki needs someone to give him the exercise and training he needs to thrive. He would do best as an only pet in a home without small children. If you can give Tiki a loving home, stop in and meet him today. Adoption fee is $95.

«

Tonka is a 12-year-old Mastiff whose owners could not take him with them when they moved. He’s sitting in the shelter hoping that someone will give him the opportunity to spend his golden years in a loving home. He’s looking for the love he misses and needs so badly. If you can find it in your heart to give him a chance, please come and adopt him today. He’ll be forever grateful. Adoption fee is $8.

«

Zola is a shy gal who is uneasy when she first meets new people. She has a lot of strength and will need a firm hand when guiding her. She can become excited when playing and when she is excited she can become jumpy, so we recommend a home with children over age 14. If you have experience with bigger, more powerful dogs and are able to offer Zola the training she needs, stop in and meet her. Adoption fee is $95.

Miro is looking for a new home. His previous family abandoned him at the shelter door. He’s very sweet and would love to be in a real home again sometime soon. You would be hard pressed to find a sweeter guy than he is! Come on down to the shelter, and let him show you how loveable he can be. Adoption fee is $35

«

Stevie is a really cool four-monthold kitten who is a whole lot of fun. He’s playful, happy and very exuberant. Like all kitties, he loves to explore and is just lots of fun to be around. Hopefully someone will come and adopt him soon, as he is so sweet he deserves a loving home. Maybe that someone will be you! Adoption fee is $70.

Cupcake has been waiting patiently at the shelter. She’s a very sweet little girl. Her previous family gave her up because she couldn’t get along with the other cats, so it would be best if she were the only cat in the household. If you think she might be the perfect cat for you, stop on by the shelter and give her a chance! Adoption fee is $35.

A Change In Season And Tone advertisinG feature

s we look forward to September, Cape May Stage begins to shift gears from Steel Magnolias to The Woolgatherer and the Second Stage wraps up its Broadway Series to collaborate with Cape May Forum. Steel Magnolias continues for one more week, your last opportunity to see this hit play. Wednesday, September 14 is the half-price preview for what promises to be the most important play of our season, the world premiere of a new version of William Mastrosimone’s The Woolgatherer. William Mastrosimone is the author of Extremities (later made into a film with Farrah Fawcett). The Woolgatherer was his first play and was a big hit at Circle Repertory Company in New York. We present a new, updated version with the author in residence. This two-hander is about a South Philadelphia woman with a big secret who invites a gruff truck driver back to her apartment for what he thinks will be a “one-night stand.” The title refers to a dreamer, but takes on a whole new meaning. William Mastrosimone will be doing a talk on September 17. Mr Mastrosimone will be represented on Broadway later this season and Cape May Stage once again brings you the major players of the 21st century. Additionally, our Second Stage presents a cabaret evening on Monday, September 19 featuring Kate Hathaway as part of Cape May Forum’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? After all the serious discussion and lectures about the politics and socio-economic implications of food, come prepared to laugh as Kate Hathaway sings “If I Knew You Were Coming, I’d A Baked A Cake.” Roy Steinberg and Mar-

Top: Broadway’s Pilar Millhollen and NYC stage-and-screen actor Michael Basile star in the upcoming South Philly love story, The Woolgatherer. Bottom: Kate McCauley Hathaway and Marlena Lustik, along with Roy Steinberg, present a hilarious evening of cabaret in conjunction with Cape May Forum’s “The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” lena Lustik will join Kate on stage with quips and witticisms about everything from oysters to desserts. “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast sets the tone for this evening of sheer delight. The proceeds will benefit both Cape May Forum and Cape May Stage. Cape May Stage is the place to be no matter the season. Our summer shows are always big comedies and after Labor Day, we transition to more dramatic shows. The Woolgatherer is the perfect transition show because while it’s funny, it delivers a poignant punch. Actors fre-

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

just got back from the bird fair. “So?” you must be thinking. Right. You don’t know about the bird fair. The planet’s biggest gathering of bird watchers. “So?” you must be thinking again. Yes. Right again. So what is so interesting about thirty or forty thousand geeky people all gathered in the same place at the same time? Well, I’ll tell you. In a word, plurality. At the British Bird Watching Fair, hosted at Rutland Water Reserve every August, you’ll find bird watchers drawn from every corner of the planet. In case you have no idea where Rutland Water is, don’t be embarrassed. Most people don’t – even those that live in the same country. It’s in the East Midlands of Great Britain; about a three-hour drive north and east of the Heathrow Airport – right in the middle of the country. There were nine big-top sized tents this year. There was a tent strictly for art. A tent for optics. A tent for books. But most of the tents were filled with booths from places that were trying to attract birders to visit.

What kind of places? Countries. There was a booth from Australia. A booth from Poland. Borneo, Japan, Turkey. There were folks trying to get people to visit Yemen. People extolling the bird riches of Estonia. People who were touting the merits of the Amazon Basin… South Africa… Extremadura… Spain… Uganda…

And Cape May! Yep. Right there among all those places that have seats at the UN was this little ol’ booth representing one of New Jersey’s smallest counties. Not country! County. You see, Cape May might be small in terms of geographic size. It is huge in terms of recognition and esteem. Fact is, more people around the globe know about the birding wealth of Cape May than they do about birding in Canada. By the way, Manitoba, Canada also had a booth. I just happened to stop by the Cape May booth to say hello to Sheila Lego and Marleen Murgitroyde, who were gladhanding visitors. I’d hoped to say hello. I couldn’t get close. The place was jammed with aspiring visitors. People who craved information about the best time to visit. Best places to go. Where to f ly into. Where to stay. Where to dine. Just think about this for a minute. You are probably visiting Cape May because it

Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 is a real cool town and it’s a nice place to come and relax. You may have considered going to Myrtle Beach, the Outer Banks, or maybe Long Beach Island, but you chose Cape May. The thousands of birders who come to Cape May every year are choosing from destinations in every corner of the globe. The same people who were on an Antarctic cruise last year and will be visiting Borneo next, are planning to come to Cape May this October. Cape May, New Jersey. A world-class ecotourist destination. Over the course of the next two months, you can go to the Hawk Watch Platform in Cape May Point State Park and stand shoulder to shoulder with visitors from Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Germany, Japan, and (of course) the UK. People from Australia don’t come to Cape May to lie on our beaches. People from Australia come to Cape May to enjoy its bird diversity. If you missed the bird fair this year, too bad. But if you want to talk to people who went, you can just show up at the Hawk Watch Platform. Better still, if you want to see just what

British bird fair attendees clamor to Cape May it is that draws birders from all over the world, you can also just show up at the Hawk Watch Platform. Now that you know, you can save yourself a trip to the Cape May booth at Rutland. If you’re a business owner in the Cape May area and would like to welcome some of those European visitors that are coming to Cape May, I suggest you contact Marleen Murgitroyde (BirdCapeMay@njaudubon. org) and ask her how you can become a recommended business. You can also stop by the Cape May Bird

Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what is happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (884-2736), is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of binoculars, pick up a schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at www. BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Sarah's Key"

uring the Vel' d'Hiv roundup of 1942 in Paris, Jewish people were treated much like they were in Nazi Germany — by their own French government. It’s a story seldom told, and likely never done as well on film as with Sarah’s Key. The story from the 1940s is entwined with the present-day experience of a journalist (played by Kristen Scott Thomas) whose husband’s grandparents own the very apartment owned by a French Jewish family that fell victim to the brutal internment. Before the police come for the previous family, Sarah, their very young daughter (played brilliantly by Mélusine Mayance) hides her younger brother in a secret closet and makes him swear to stay quiet and wait for her return. As she suffers some of the worst atrocities man can commit, she is determined to get back to her brother with the key she holds in her pocket to set him free. The interweaving of the two stories is masterfully done, with storylines culminating simultaneously to a very dramatic and beautifully played climax. And while it could

Sarah's Key explores the Vel' d'Hiv roundup of 1942 be argued that the film might have been better ending sooner rather than later, the film still provides an insightful look at this troubled time in history with well-structured scenes, well-written dialogue (except for a few pieces of overly expository dialogue in the modern story), and an impressive eye for detail. This film is a must see for history enthusiasts but definitely should be on the list for anyone who

appreciates an in-depth character study with historical significance. As we head into the fall, Cape May gets ready to host its award-winning film festival with more films you've never seen in New Jersey, special guest panel discussions, and your chance to meet directors, producers, actors and screenwriters. This year we will host the New Jersey premiere of the Sundance winner for Best Cinematography, The Redemption of General Butt Naked and meet filmmaker Greg Henry. Also this year, "Gangster Movies: A Retrospective and Panel Discussion" featuring Philadelphia Inquirer special reporter for organized crime, George Anastasia. We’ll also feature selections from Black Maria Film Festival, Dance on Film, and the best short films from all over New Jersey (and many premiering for the first time in the Garden State). We encourage you to find out why we are one of only three arts organizations in the entire state to be voted most favorite by JerseyArts People's Choice Award for each of the three years the award has been offered! The Dating Column

T

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

hey say if you want to find love, you need to stop looking, that you’ll find your man when you least expect it. I think this is true. When I do my hair and head to the Mug, I don’t meet anyone. It doesn’t matter that I’m willing to dance with any hobbit in the bar; even the hobbits don’t want anything to do with me. It’s only when fumbling through the aisles of CVS the next morning, hung over and desperately searching for some Advil, that I ever find a man who seems the slightest bit interested. Shaving one’s legs, I have learned, is the kiss of death. Only if you're hairy and unprepared will you meet your prince. And, if you want a date with your fella to go really well (would-you-like-to-come-inside well) throw on a pair of Kermit the Frog granny panties. It’s as if men have some special kind of underwear radar – as soon as you put on your sexy lingerie, they lose all interest in seeing you in your skivvies. But to tell a single girl to stop looking for love, to stop trying so hard, is a lot like saying, “Don’t think about giraffes.” Of course,

after you hear it, all you’ll be able to think about are giraffes. And besides, as anyone who was in town for the National Lifeguard Championships will be able to tell you, it’s hard not to eye up the merchandise from time to time, even if you’ve sworn off trying to make a purchase. But there was one day a few weeks ago when a man really was the last thing on my mind. I hadn’t slept at all, as I’d spent the previous night at a friend’s bachelorette party,

and I was feeling pretty rough. (I swear, no matter how this column is making it sound, I’m not hung over all the time, but on this particular day, I was looking as though I might lose my lunch.) I decided to do what I always do when I’m suffering from the effects of too many vodka tonics – I went for a swim in the ocean. And, because I hadn’t shaved my legs or even run a comb through my hair, naturally I met a man. My readers might remember the column I wrote about this guy. I sat by the phone and waited for him to call. I felt sure I’d hear from him that very night because the connection between us had been so good, so I showered and put on some lip gloss, just in case. Of course, this guy didn’t call for three weeks, after I’d gained three pounds and completely run out of lip gloss. Nevertheless, we met up for a beer at the Jackson Mountain Café, and I had a great time. Now, I’m sitting by the phone, in my Kermit the Frog underwear, waiting for him to call once again. I realize that I might not hear from him ever again – I’ll keep you posted – but I am hopeful; I’m not shaving my legs just yet.
