October has got to be one of the best months of the year to get out walking and enjoying the Henfield’s Walk for Olivia Sussex countryside. Our cover image, of two Little Owls taken by wildlife photographer David Plummer, is a stunning example of the richness the wildlife right on our doorsteps. Charity Haven Big Lottery Award We interviewed David for BN5 several years ago, when we came across his work as the Sussex Wildlife Trust photographer. Since then, he has shot to international fame and you may have seen Local Interest him interviewed on the BBC One Show. David’s David Plummer work is stunning, please see our article on page 32 with more of his images. On the subject of walking... at the BN5 office we Local Interest are hoping you will all join us for our first Henfield walk, in aid of the Brain Tumour Charity on Sunday Henfield Cubs at 100 21 October, in support of Olivia from Hamfelds. When she was first diagnosed, Olivia said she wanted to raise awareness of the symptoms of Gardening brain tumours and support BTC, but unfortunately Gardeners’ Question her illness has made it difficult to fulfill all the ideas she had, one of which was a charity walk. So, we Time have decided to do it for her, we are hoping she will be well enough to join us for a short time. Please come along, it should be a wonderful afternoon Local Interest - this is all about enjoying a beautiful autumnal Henfield Theatre Co. Sussex walk and everyone is welcome. Many of my customers have become great friends and I truly love what I do. The clothes are casual but feminine and this season we have some gorgeous fabrics and colours used in the skinny and slim fitting trousers which are again very on trend. All trousers are super comfortable and tend to be higher waisted (muffin top free) with plenty of stretch. HORTON GOLF CLUB ONCE IN A LIFE TIME EVENT An unusual event recently occurred at the Horton Golf Club, two players scored a hole in one at the same time! Richard Diebel and Amanda Bibby, who were playing in different groups, managed to score a hole in one within minutes of each other, on the 11th and 16th holes respectively. ROGUE TRADERS? Back in August, we had a report of workmen in a grey van operating in the Henfield area, knocking on doors and offering to mend pathways and drives before undertaking more work than initially suggested and asking for immediate cash payment. The resident was elderly and due to the prompt actions of their carers, the workmen were sent away. Back for a second fundraising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Jim Prior and The JP Big Band are returning to Steyning on Saturday 27 October. Following the success of their last fundraising night, The JP Big Band are putting on an evening of music from Gloria Estefan, Tori Kelly, Sammy Nestico, Bobby Darin and more! Joining the band on stage this year are special guests Bryony Prior on vocals, Paul Newton on trumpet, Mark Bassey on trombone, Vocal Fusion acapella and Saffron on vocals. In addition, a full 25-piece big band will certainly make a fantastic evening’s entertainment. The Rotary Club of Steyning and Henfield, Steyning Music Society and the Steyning Jazz Club have also stepped forward to help organise and promote the event, which will include a bar and raffle sponsored by local residents and businesses. All profits are going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Jim’s sister Bryony was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was younger, so there is a very personal connection. The concert will be held at the Steyning Centre, BN44 3XZ on Saturday 27 October at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm). HENFIELD CRICKET CLUB U10S COLTS VICTORIOUS! In recent years, Colts’ cricket at Henfield has quietly gone from strength to strength, mainly due to some keen volunteers who give their time and pass on their passion for the traditional summer game. We’ve got all ages playing, with the most recent addition being the 5 to 8-year-old boys and girls, who are now signed up to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)’s All-Stars program, which aims to simplify the game and get parents involved in practising the skills with their kids. The Under 9s, U10s, U11s, U13s and U15s, have all been playing matches this summer, and some of the older boys are even playing with the adult teams when called upon! The Colts have had some great successes through the season, most recently by the U10s team, who won the Plate Final against Burgess Hill. We’re very proud of how well they have played as a team, encouraging each other along and seeing significant development and potential future stars! Special mentions from the final match should go to our top scorer Abby Furber and our wall-like wicket keepers who didn’t let any balls past them, Jack Woodley and Jed Bandy.
Horsham District Council has received funding to deliver a training and support programme for independent retailers across Horsham District. The training will focus on improving customer experience as local retailers adapt to rapidly changing consumer buying habits. The Council has commissioned retail training specialist Chris Billington, from Progressive Results Training, to deliver a fully funded Horsham District Independent Retail Training and Support Programme: ‘Your Customer Experience’. The programme will consist of four key elements; facilitated workshops, bespoke rapid improvement sessions, display enhancement grants, and customer experience awards next year. Substantial changes to the retail sector over recent years mean that many independent retailers are finding it difficult to compete against larger online and high street stores. It is therefore ever more important for these businesses to build their retailing skills to maximise sales opportunities in this new environment. On 23 June they hosted a double stall at Upper Beeding School’s Summer Fete, offering a number of competitions for children and a grand raffle for the adults. Justine Hudson, from Richwards, said; “It was a scorching hot day, but everyone enjoyed themselves, gave generously and was entertained by some fabulous events. We were also very pleased to have the backing of Stokes in Henfield, who kindly donated a large box of toys for our children’s lucky dip”. We are pleased to announce that the winner of the MS SOCIETY FUNDRAISER ‘Name the Rabbit’ competition was Reuban who called the rabbit ‘Tony Chestnut’. The Centre would like to thank everyone who organised the event, donated food and raffle prizes, and those who travelled down to support the day. A year has gone by since the volunteers got together to start the refurbishment of the Henfield Hall. What a difference those changes have made – the wooden ceilings have been replaced with modern materials and updated LED lighting, the walls are now painted, and the floors have been re-carpeted. All these changes mean that the entrance to the Hall has a much more modern and welcoming feel. However, this success means we need more mentors to help on all device types. We especially need more mentors to help with iPads and other Apple equipment, as more and more club members are using these devices. So, if you are fairly confident with the workings of your laptop, tablet (Android or Apple) or phone, we would love to have you join us. You’ll find it’s also a pleasure to be able to help others - we as mentors find it very rewarding and we learn along the way as well. TOAD IN THE HOLE ART SCULPTURE IN HENFIELD Following on from a news item in the July edition of BN5, we have an update on the Toad in the Hole sculpture to be built near the Henfield Leisure Centre. The sculpture is due to be started at the end of March 2019 as part of Henfield’s Year of Culture. It will be completed over a few days and is predicted to cost at least £2,650 to finish. OCTOBER 2018 | News BISHOP’S PARK ESTATE VANDALISM There has been another act of vandalism on the Bishop’s Park estate. Between midnight on Sunday 26 August and 5am on Monday 27 August, a jar of petrol was thrown onto the entrance road to the estate. This is the eighth attack on the Bishop’s Park estate over recent months. Lynnette St Quintin, Sales Director for Barratt Southern Counties comments: “We are extremely disappointed that there has been a further act of antisocial behaviour at Bishop Park. As soon as we were aware that this was an ongoing situation, we installed CCTV cameras as well as high and lowlevel lighting to help deter further attacks of this nature. We have proactively cooperated with the local police and Neighbourhood Watch throughout this entire situation; installing increased levels of security whilst doing our best to reassure residents. This unacceptable behaviour is obviously hugely disappointing for us and the residents of Bishop Park as well as Henfield and it is our intention that this situation is resolved quickly and with the full support of the law. NEW HOME FOR SOUTH DOWNS RIDING FOR THE DISABLED Due to redevelopment, South Downs Riding for the Disabled group have had to relocate from Bridge House Equestrian Centre at Slinfold. Their new home is at the Horsham and Mid Sussex Equestrian Academy (HMSEA) in Albourne, near Burgess Hill, where they run three sessions on Wednesday mornings. The group enjoyed five very successful and happy years at Bridge House, during which time the owners, Liz and Chris McIlwraith, and the wonderful liveries who so kindly loaned their ponies to the group were always incredibly supportive. HMSEA have extended a very warm welcome to the group and their riders, and after the upheaval of the move all are settling nicely into their new surroundings. Everyone is looking forward to getting back in the saddle on 12 September and they are eager to encourage new volunteers and local organisations to get involved. ANNUAL 24-HOUR CHARITY EVENT AT WICKWOODS The Wickwoods Members, staff and local businesses took part in the clubs fourth annual 24-hour tennis and triathlon charity event over the August Bank Holiday. Over 170 people played tennis or took part in triathlon events, and in total the team swam 9 miles, ran 89 miles, cycled 179 miles and played hundreds of tennis matches. In excess of £6000 was raised for three local charities; Rosslyn Park Injury Trust, Woodlands Meed School and Whoopsadaisy. Mark Ross, who took place in the triathlon, swam an extraordinary 1.5 miles in 30 mins, and was only just beaten in the cycling event by 0.1 of mile by Stephen Clark. Kevin Bush took Gold in the running event covering 4.35 miles. All participants for the event were also entered into a raffle to win a year’s free membership at Wickwoods, which was won by Carole Farquhar - congratulations! The event culminated with exhibition tennis matches by Tennis Director Mark Weaver and Club Coach Natasha Khan, taking on all-comers in a beat the coach finale challenge. Several of the clubs top playing members took part, including Chris Revees from our sponsor, Carpenter Box Accountants. Chris stepped up and, despite several close calls, the coaches left the courts victorious. HENFIELD SCOUT CLIMBS HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN ENGLAND FOR THE SCOUT HUT Over the summer, Holly Williams raised money for the Henfield Scout Hut by climbing Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, in extremely poor conditions. Accompanied by another Scout and both of their fathers, Holly took the Corridor Route – an extremely challenging hike – from Seathwaite to Scafell Pike on a 25-mile round trip which took the best part of two days to complete. Holly decided to raise some money to help build the new Henfield Scout Hut as a thank you to the group, since she will shortly leave the group and move on to Explorers (a district run programme). Thanks to the hike, she has managed to raise an impressive £500 for the Scout Hut. Mark Williams

It also gives you the chance to get involved with your local hospice. Together with hospices across the country, St Barnabas House in Worthing will be educating people about the care services it provides, and addressing the misconceptions and fears that many people have about hospice care. St Barnabas House does extraordinary work in the heart of the local community, providing end of life and palliative care services both at the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ own homes across the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. BAGS-4-BRAINS... FROM HENFIELD! As many Henfield residents will know, the village raised a fantastic sum at Christmas with the Big BN5 Draw for The Brain Tumour Charity. Very sadly many will also know that Olivia of Hamfelds, who inspired the Christmas fundraising, is now very poorly. Consequently, we’ve decided to launch the ‘Bags-4-Brains’ campaign. Currently most of our High Street shops do not charge 5p for plastic bags, as this is something only large chains have to do. However, there is still a real environmental cost to using these bags. This Autumn, most Henfield stores will be asking customers for a voluntary donation with every plastic bag they use, in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity. This will be completely optional, but we do hope you will dig deep – it is a great charity, and Henfield has already proved capable of great charitable acts!

FROM THE MUSEUM ARCHIVES This photograph was taken at Brazier’s Garage, Golden Square on 11 April 1975, when 5-star petrol was 74.5p per gallon and the pump attendant would fill up the tank for you. Reg Woolgar, who had just retired after 40 years as a mechanic for Brazier’s, is being served by Ronnie Corbett lookalike Terry O’Callaghan-Murdoch, who was active in The Henfield Players. Although known as Reg, he was christened Jesse Reginald Woolgar; Jesse being his father’s name. Reg, who was Henfield born and bred, was a very nice, quietly spoken man. He died in 1985 aged 75 years. Terry moved away from Henfield to live in Steyning. More information about the museum is available on the Henfield Parish Council website www. henfield.gov.uk. It is open 10am-12pm Monday to Saturday, except Wednesday when it is open 2.30-4.30pm, with an additional Saturday slot at 2.30-4.30pm. Cagefoot Lane, Sunday 21 October, 2pm The Walks Our idea is to ‘Walk for Olivia’ to show our support, as well as raise awareness and money for this great charity, on Sunday 21st October at 2pm. There will be two community walks running simultaneously: 1 The Twittens Walk
A short loop starting at Stokes Garden in Cagefoot Lane, past the Tanyard Pond, St Peter’s and along Church Street. Then back up the High Street to finish in the Garden Room, Henfield Hall. Pushchair, wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly, suitable for young and old alike. Approximate distance 1km (2/3 mile) taking around 15 mins.
What happens next? There will be tea and homemade cakes afterwards at the Garden Room along with the BP Guild barbeque selling hot-dogs, every penny raised will go to the Brain Tumour Charity. Henfield Joggers are planning to run the cross-country route so if you’re feeling more energetic you are welcome to join them! A more energetic walk from the same start at Stokes Garden in Cagefoot Lane, through the village and across fields to the Downs Link and along the river bank back into Henfield and finishing at the Garden Room. This requires walking boots or suitable footwear as it may be muddy, depending on the weather. There will be some stiles to climb and the track is uneven and unmade, across fields, in places. There are no water stops so please bring your own drinks if you need them. It’s around 7km (4.3miles) and will take around 1½-2 hours to walk
Who can join? Everyone! This is very much a community walk and everyone is welcome, come along as a group or on your own, all ages are welcome. Please wear red if you can, and bring some money with you for tea, cake, beer and hotdogs afterwards, every penny goes to the Brain Tumour Charity! How do I raise money? See the next page for details of how to fundraise. There is no obligation to do so of course.
Which route should I choose? Please choose the route that suits your health and physical ability. This is a relaxed and informal event, please take responsibility for your own welfare. There are no medical facilities and no water stops until the end of the walk. Can I bring my dog? Yes you can. Well behaved dogs are welcome (on leads at all times, and only if your dog is friendly in large groups and with other dogs).

Olivia’s pledge has always been to raise as much awareness and funds for this charity as possible. ongratulations to everyone at the Henfield Haven as they celebrate being awarded an incredible £65,000 Big Lottery grant! The grant will be put to very good use, with a bright, light and airy extension to the existing café area. The café has proved to be a huge success for The Haven, not only acting as a social area for visitors and providing delicious lunches, but to encourage anyone and everyone to come along and use the Haven. The café is perfect for light lunches, coffee and afternoon tea, and this extra space will be used for larger groups and activities as well as providing much needed extra seating during busy periods. It can also be separated and used as a private meeting area. Launched in November 2015 to provide a wide range of services in the village, The Henfield Haven has quickly established itself as essential to Henfield and the surrounding villages. It provides high-needs facilities for those living with dementia three days a week, as well as a vibrant and interesting programme of events, courses and activities for people of any age during other times. The beautiful gardens, with the Mini Haven for younger visitors, are one of the Haven’s key attractions, complete with raised allotment beds and stunning flower-filled borders. The day-to-day running of The Haven is undertaken by Impact Initiatives, plus over 40 volunteers who help out. It is managed by local Henfield people in the form of the Henfield Social Enterprise Community Interest Company (CIC). The CIC has a 25 year lease on the property from West Sussex County Council, the group saved it from likely closure back in 2015.

Downs (Southern) Ltd, a local building company located near Henfield, have been appointed to carry out the work. Building work is planned to start this autumn, with the extension due to be completed by March 2019. Paul Mason from Downs Southern said; “We’re excited to be building this important extension to The Haven, the plans look great and as a local business we’re pleased to be involved with this great local charity.” Tony Jackson, a Director of the Community Interest Company overseeing the Haven, said: “We are delighted to have received this grant from the Big Lottery Fund which will enable us to create muchneeded extra space at the Haven. JOURNEY INTO THE WILD

e’re surrounded by beauty in Sussex, although perhaps sometimes we move too fast, or make too much noise, to even notice it. Meeting wildlife photographer David Plummer in the garden at Woods Mill turned out to be an altogether different interview experience. While we talked about his latest projects and his recent successes with appearances on the One Show, work for Huawei and with the Knepp re-wilding project, the conversation was occasionally interrupted by the star of the show, the wildlife. A small, brown bank vole sneaking onto the nearby bird table to steal some seeds caught his attention, while the flash of colour from a nuthatch on a nearby tree-trunk brings out his ever-present binoculars and halts David mid-sentence. Success in the competitive field of wildlife photography, although enjoyable, is making very little difference to David and his approach to life. Nothing seems to faze him, from speaking in an auditorium in Berlin full of Huawei execs at the launch of their multi-million dollar smartphone, to the opening of a hospital wing specialising in the latest treatments for Parkinson’s in front of world-class neurologists. Wherever, he has the same quiet, calm and slightly bemused approach. Perhaps if you’ve tracked leopards on foot in the Masai Mara or mountain gorillas in Rwanda, then standing in front of a bank of cameras in a packed theatre is a just walk in the park. Parkinson’s has become part of David’s life since he was diagnosed nine years ago, but it is secondary, or, possibly even further down the list. When he lectures (as he is more and more frequently asked to do) the photographs first capture his audience. Then the stories of how he respectfully joins his wildlife subjects and immerses himself in their lives, on their levels and in their colours, contours and sounds, resonates with people and draws them in. It’s only near the end of his talk that he’ll drop the ‘P bomb’.

“Parkinson’s has been part of my life for the past nine years, probably longer, but it will never define me. I need people to see the wildlife first, marvel at the beauty of the creature, look deep into its soul. I don’t want them thinking, wow, that’s a good shot for someone with Parkinson’s. So, I just wait, until they are immersed in the wildlife, see the pictures for what they are, before I mention it,” said David. He is not afraid to talk about Parkinsons, to throw off the preconceptions we may have about it being a disease of the elderly (he’s a young man, diagnosed as he just turned 40). He will never belittle the pain and the sheer and brutal everyday battle of living with it. But, he has learned to harness the energy and the anger, his work has got better, has more urgency and more power. It has sharpened his eye and his ear, and for that he thanks Parkinson’s. It’s also one of the reasons that he produced a book, crowd-funded and published by Penguin Random House, ‘7 Years of Camera Shake’. It hit the Amazon best-seller list within weeks, beating Dan Brown to the top spot. It’s a stunning book, immersive and beautiful, cataloguing his work from across the continents; cheetahs, lions, mountain gorillas, birds of prey, then back home to his favourite hunting ground, Sussex; where he

shoots owls, kingfishers and rutting deer. Half the profits go to Parkinson’s UK as they help to fund research into this debilitating disease. David’s work takes him all around the world, he guides eco-trips to the Massai-Mara, Brazil, Hungary, India, Rwanda and the Galapagos where he teaches the art of photography and creates beautiful images for his corporate clients. He is a proactive conservationist and runs photography courses back home in the UK for Sussex Wildlife Trust and as part of the team at Knepp Castle providing wildlife safaris. The Knepp Castle estate. where David is resident photographer, has become his second home. He runs photographic courses as part of their Wildlife Safaris. It’s where he has captured some of his best pictures of kingfishers, owls (all five British species are seen at Knepp at various times of the year) and of course, their famous deer. Due to the re-wilding project and the Burrell’s environmentfirst approach to farming, the eco-system is rich, so David has had the opportunity to photograph some rare species of butterflies, moths and birdlife. He will only photograph creatures in their wild, natural states and will wait for hours for a shot. His success is, in part, down to good preparation; he uses hides of all descriptions and will study his subjects and establish where they’re nesting or hunting and then play the waiting game for the right shot. He created an ingenious ‘floating hide’ which featured on the BBC One Show, when he took wildlife presenter Richard Taylor-Jones on a shoot to photograph the elusive Little Grebe. This diminutive bird is incredibly shy, so David’s floating hide works perfectly by allowing him to get up close and at water level with the bird. When I ask David where his all-time favourite location is, he doesn’t hesitate: “It’s got to be Sussex. The landscape, the diversity and the fact that it’s home. I love to travel, but that journey back when I catch my first glimpse of the South Downs tells me I’m home. I have a trusty Suzuki Jimny, painted in camouflage colours, which is my complete rock, it’s a perfect 4x4 vehicle and will take me anywhere.” David had the determination to turn his passion for wildlife into a career. It has been his life’s work to seek perfection, or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that he hunts for the real beauty that lies in imperfection. This beauty allows him to escape some of the darker moments of living with Parkinson’s and has given him the determination to live the most creative and positive life that he possibly can. Henfield Cub Scouts - 100 years T he Wolf Cubs, as Cub Scouts were originally known, was created by Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout Association, to provide Scouting activities to those still too young to join the Boy Scouts (which was 11+). The original programme was themed around the Jungle Book novel, written by BadenPowell’s friend and neighbour Rudyard Kipling. The Scout Association’s records show that the Henfield Cub Pack was formed with an initial 29 Wolf Cubs, on 17 October 1918, under Cubmaster Mrs Clarkson. Scouting for older boys had existed in Henfield since 1907. After formation, the pack maintained around 30 Cubs under Cubmaster Miss Grainger and continued to run through the Second World War. Post-war, Cubmaster Mr Jupp took over and grew the pack to average 35 Cubs. In 1966 the Wolf Cubs were renamed Cub Scouts and the programme and names adapted to suit the era, with the role of Cub Scout Leader replacing Cubmaster. 1971 sees the Cub Scouts present at the formal opening of the new and current Scout Hut, and through the 70s and early 80s the pack remained strong in numbers. By the late 80s, growing numbers resulted in the pack being split into two, with each troop taking their names from the local rivers, the Adur and Arun. By the 90s the two packs combined numbered around 50 members. Scouting was strong in Henfield; there were two Beaver Colonies (formed in 1986), two Cub packs, two Scout troops (the

1907 and 1997 troops), and a Venture Scout unit, with leaders working hard to deliver Scouting for all the sections. It’s at this point that the Group experienced a major shakeup… for the first time, girls were allowed to join the Scouts. Initially this seems to have caused some concern, but the early girls integrated well and set a good precedent for the future of Henfield Scouting. We now have girls in all sections of the Scout Group, and other than in tent allocation gender has no bearing on the activities that are undertaken. During the early 2000s, a lack of leaders meant that the Cub pack had to be reduced to one troop, but demand remained high as numbers held at around 36, the maximum possible membership. At this point the pack was led by Cub Scout Leader Tanya Jennings, who ran the pack for 12 years and organised successful camps across England, including one to visit Brownsea Island, the home of Baden-Powell’s original camp in 1907. In recent years there has been an increase in those wanting to join Scouting, undoubtedly influenced by our Chief Scout Bear Grylls along with a general desire for adventure and the outdoors. A growing waiting list, along with the closure of our neighbouring pack in Partridge Green, resulted in the reformation of the second Henfield Cub pack at the start of this year. Now, as we mark our 100th birthday we have well over 50 Cubs, the highest number in Henfield history.

So as we celebrate our 100th birthday, what do the Cubs offer to young people in 2018? Cubs today, just like those in 1918, work to a programme which awards outdoor activities, teamwork, skill development, and global awareness. In the last year the Henfield Cubs have hiked, camped, abseiled, canoed, climbed, potholed, cooked on open fires, built shelters, shot air rifles and enjoyed Archery. But it isn’t all outdoors, they’ve also learnt how to cook, sew and iron, as well as earning badges in areas such as emergency first aid, navigation and many more! The packs also spend time raising awareness and funds for the new Scout Hut and other projects in the wider community, planning several activities to raise money throughout the year. For our hundred-year anniversary a special badge has been issued which all Cubs are currently wearing on their uniform. These are available for purchase, so if you are a former Cub and would like one please send us an email, they cost £2.50 each plus 60p P&P. The Cub packs run during term times, if you think your child would like to get involved please send
us an email as there is currently space in the Adur pack. All Cub pack leaders are volunteers and give up their time for free, so extra help is always welcomed - be that as a leader, a member of the Executive Committee, or by helping to fundraise for the group. roblems with your pelargoniums? Worried about your wisteria? Confused about your cabbages? You may well be in luck, since national Radio 4 panel show ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ is coming to Henfield! The show, which tours the country answering local vegetation-based queries, will be hosted in the Henfield Hall, on Wednesday 31 October at 6.15pm. With a horticultural heritage like Henfield’s, it’s only logical that Gardeners’ Question Time would visit the village sooner or later – if anything the Henfield Gardeners should be answering the panel’s questions! Our brief journey through Henfield’s horticultural history begins in the 19th century, where the expansion of Brighton made Henfield a significant contributor to the local horticultural industry. With rich sandy soil running through the village, Henfield became a thriving market garden location, sowing the seeds for our now avid gardening community more than two centuries later. Along with mixed market gardening, the village is also famous for its violets, grown at the Lavender Cottage violet nursery and sold to such customers as the Duchesses of Norfolk and Westminster, and even Queen Mary on occasion! After a peak in the 1960s, the industry in Henfield began to fade faced with larger competitors, and Henfield’s time in the agricultural spotlight seemed to come to an end. However, in recent years the Henfield Gardens and Arts Festival has brought Henfield back into the limelight, as the June event has become extremely popular around the West Sussex area. The resurgence of Henfield gardening has been propelled by the Henfield

Gardening Club, who run popular talks, garden visits and plant sales all through the year. They will be the hosts of Gardeners’ Question Time when it comes to Henfield this month.
Gardeners’ Question Time The show, which is recorded in a different location each week, consists of a panel of horticultural experts who answer questions from a live audience of local gardening enthusiasts. Gardeners’ Question Time was created in 1947, and since then its expert panel has answered over 30,000 horticultural questions! To claim that the panel were ‘experts’ could well be an understatement – they never see any questions before recording and all their answers are provided on the spot, showing their near-encyclopaedic knowledge of all things horticultural. If you have any difficult gardening questions you want answering then this is definitely your best opportunity. Though the panel will be guests of the Henfield Gardening Club, the event is open to any budding gardeners regardless of any group affiliation, and tickets will be allocated on a first-come-firstserved basis. As a prelude to the 2019 Henfield Festival, all money raised by the event will go towards funding the Henfield Village Fair, where you’ll be able to display your perfect pelargoniums for the whole village to admire! erhaps best known for The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, Plaza Suite and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Neil Simon has also given us this semi-autobiographical account of growing up in a second-generation Jewish immigrant family in 1930s New York. Described as “simultaneously poignant and funny” when first seen on Broadway in 1983, it has lost none of its freshness, with its eternal themes of family relationships and the traumas of puberty and sexual awakening. We meet 15-year-old Eugene Morris Jerome (played by Ewan Fairchild), whose ambitions are to be a baseball star or a writer. He keeps a journal and sometimes shares his thoughts directly with the audience. Apart from sport, his main preoccupation is with his cousin, Nora (Saskia Monteiro), a lovely girl of 16, who is desperately anxious to appear in a Broadway musical, if only her mother would allow her to attend the auditions. Eugene’s older brother, Stanley (Raphael Key), dispenses advice about the opposite sex, but has problems of his own when his principles get him into trouble at work. The boys’ parents, Kate and Jack (Sharona Key-Barry and Trevor Hodgson), have to work extremely hard to keep the family afloat in difficult economic times; there is additional pressure on Jack who, as head of the household, is looked to by all when important decisions have to be made. Always in the background is the concern about the spread of fascism in Europe and the perilous

situation of their relatives in Poland. Where will they live, if they manage to escape to America? Kate and Jack have already given a home to Kate’s widowed sister, Blanche (Lauren Morley), with her daughters Nora and Laurie (Marisa Meinecke). We witness the results of the tensions between the adults and between the girls, but also how their love for one another survives the pressure. Director Sheila Nye first saw Brighton Beach Memoirs over 30 years ago and it made a lasting impression, so much so that on a family trip to New York she took the time to visit the actual Brighton Beach. She says that she is delighted to have the opportunity to direct a very talented cast in this wonderful play. To help create a more intimate atmosphere, the actors will be performing on the floor of the Hall, rather than on the stage, with the audience seated on three sides of the acting area. CASE OF
CAUDLE STREET

A
few years ago, a member of the public brought an old medical case to be inspected by the experts on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. Embossed on the case was the name ‘Dr A.W.W Caudle’. It turned out to have once been in the possession of the man after whom Henfield’s Caudle Street is named after, back in the late 1800s, while he was a practicing GP in the village. There were two Dr Adolphus Caudles in Henfield, father and son, but the case belonged to the Dr Adolphus William Caudle, Jnr. Some months later, the BBC show was repeated on Australian television. A patient of a Dr Jim Caudle, who currently lives near Adelaide in Australia, was watching the show. Intrigued by the coincidence, he took a recording of the show in to Dr Jim, to see if Adolphus was any relation. Jim knew of his family’s decent from English stock but had never seriously investigated the family tree. With the doctor’s case in his mind, he took to genealogy sites and started to do some research. Jim’s great, great grandfather, who was a relative of the second Adolphus Caudle of Caudle Street (and medical bag) fame, had settled in Adelaide in the 1860s, making his way to a small town called Wattle Flat just south of the city. Jim’s grandfather, Theophilus William Caudle, was born in Yankalilla, and the family have not moved far since. Jim made a visit to England back in 2013 with his

wife Mary and made his way to Henfield, which his research had shown to be the home village of Dr Adolphus William Caudle and his family. He was surprised to find a small, brick street in his family name, and knocked on the first door in the street. It was at this office that he met Malcolm Reid, Chartered Accountant, whose family own the property that was then Henfield Furnishings. Some of you who know Henfield going back to the 1970s may remember that it was Malcolm, along with Alf Gander of Vinalls Builders, who were the architects behind Caudle Street as we now know it. This narrow alley-way was once concealed by a green wooden door at the High Street end, where Dr Caudle kept his pony and trap ready for his house visits. Dr. Caudle’s surgery was situated in Elm Lodge, the building which is now the St. Barnabas shop. Malcolm and Alf Gander had built the passageway to give the village an access route to the brand new Henfield Hall, which was also built by Vinalls in the 1970s. They decided to call it Caudle Street after the famous doctor, and it became home to several small businesses which have greatly enhanced the High Street. The little street is also an essential cut-through to the Henfield Hall Car Park. Jim visited Henfield back in June this year and was

thrilled to discover even more information about his distant relative and namesake; the scarlet uniform Adolphus wore when he was Surgeon Lieutenant in the Henfield Rifle Volunteers between 18781889, as well as his smoking cap and a portrait. All contained in the Henfield Museum, which is a treasure trove of local history and artefacts. The late Dr John Squire wrote a fascinating history of the Caudle family and their medical legacy in the village. It seems there were quite a few Dr. Caudles in the Brighton and Lewes area, and the first Dr Adolphus settled in Henfield in 1840 when he was 29. He practiced in the village until the year of his death in 1862, when his son, Adolphus William (of the uniform and medical bag fame), took over the family practice. He qualified in 1861 and worked alongside his father for just a few months. Dr Adolphus William Caudle was an important man in Henfield and a great benefactor to the village. He was a trustee of the Gresham Charity, which still gives grants to local good causes, was a founding member of the Henfield Benefit Association for Nursing the Sick, and a member of many good causes including the Coal Club, Organ Fund, Boys Shoe Fund and Lending Society for the Sick. When he died in 1903 an obituary in the Henfield Parish Magazine records; “The death of Dr. A.W.W Caudle caused profound grief throughout the

neighbourhood and among all classes. He spent his whole life in Henfield, succeeding his father in his practice in his young days. So earnestly did he apply himself to his noble calling that he rarely took a holiday; indeed he may be said to have sacrificed himself to his work.” The item goes on to say: “Suffice it to say that there was nothing going on for the benefit of the parish in which he did not put his whole heart. He was on practically every Committee, and up to the last was a Manager of our Schools. His cheerful presence both in private and in public, at the bedside of the sick, and at social functions was much appreciated, and Henfield will sadly miss him.” The life and work of Dr Caudle was memorialised with a stained-glass window in St Peter’s Church, which was dedicated in June 1905. Parishioners were invited to contribute to the cost of the window, under which is inscribed in Latin “Grateful friends dedicated this window to the sacred memory of Adolphus William Wisden Caudle, the beloved physician, who died June 1st 1903.” With grateful thanks to Malcolm Reid, Dr Jim Caudle and Alan Barwick for providing information about Dr. Caudle and the building of Caudle Street. Dealing with selective eaters Most children are generally good eaters up until the age of two. At this point, as if over-night, they may become extremely fearful of foods, and especially trying new types which are treated with the utmost distrust. Evolutionally psychologists have linked this ‘fear of the new’ back to cave-dwelling times when children taking their first steps were faced with the temptation of potentially poisonous berries. Therefore, we can consider this mistrust of food as a protective mechanism. Though this is of little commiseration when your child is refusing the very food that you know to be healthy and nourishing. So, some level of picky eating is to be expected and a child will often grow out of this. But when children are restrictive around food it may be a problem. It is important to try to nip pickiness in the bud early on as selective eating deprives a child of the building blocks of good physical and mental health. A child is more likely to experience calm and rationale feelings if their diet provides suitable amounts of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and water1. I understand the concern of parents with picky eaters as when my daughter reached her second birthday she decided that the only food type to pass her lips would be plain pasta eaten only using her fingers. As a nutritionist, with the fussiest eater I’d ever encountered I ventured into hours of studies on how to address the problem. With a calm and varied approach, eventually I successfully turned this around. Due to my own personal experience and from working on Child Obesity schemes where severe pickiness was rife, I developed the ‘Taste Explorers’ Programme which aims to allow children to reach a fearless place with food by play, experimentation and peer group inclusion. I’ve taken this to schools and private workshops with plenty of success. Moderate pickiness can create a battleground for families which is frustrating and infectious to other siblings. Brexit: Deal or No Deal? So what are the scenarios facing the UK come next March? And what does No Deal look like? 1. Theresa May wins the day: The broad outline of the Chequers White Paper are accepted by the EU27 in December. The EU27 is clear that Parliament’s rejection will result in Britain leaving the EU with the hardest of Brexits. Parliament approves the deal. 2. UK exits, no deal: May accepts a deal that prevents Britain from striking its own trade arrangements, whilst being bound into Brussels rules. Parliament rejects it. Attempts to extend Article 50 fail. Britain leaves the EU with no deal on 29 March. Implications: • Legal status: The UK will be a third country and EU law will cease to apply to and in the UK. • Trade: Tariffs will be imposed on goods imported from and exported to the EU. Tariffs on many products will be 2-3%, but on cars around 10% and on many agricultural products between 20% and 40%. These additional costs are likely to significantly impact the competitiveness of UK exporters. Trade in services will suffer from the loss of ‘passporting rights’ which allow services to be sold across the EU without having to obtain licences in each country. The temporary or occasional provision of services by UK nationals in an EU27 Member State, even if they are already established in an EU27 Member state, will be governed by the national policies and rules of that Member State. • Customs: Britain would establish a stand-alone customs regime from day one, applying the same duties to every country with which it has no special deal. • Regulations: Britain would cease to be a member of dozens of regulatory agencies that govern many aspects of daily life. These relate to legislation governing common product standards, such as how products are processed, tested, licenced, labelled and packaged. Responsibility for enforcing these rules rests with a combination of national bodies, 35 panEuropean regulators, and international courts. UK firms operate under these rules, whether they are producing for the domestic market or for export. However if the UK left without a deal, the responsibility for ensuring that UK exports complied with EU rules would shift from UK
regulators to EU customs officials. People: There will be uncertainty over the status of 4m European & UK citizens who live across borders. • Professional qualifications: The recognition of professional qualifications of UK nationals in an EU27 Member State will be governed by the national policies and rules of that Member State, irrespective of whether the qualifications of the UK national were obtained in the UK, in another third country or in an EU27 Member State. • Border issues: The EU must apply its regulation and tariffs at UK borders, including checks and controls for customs, sanitary and phytosanitary standards and verification of compliance with EU norms. Transport between the UK and the EU will be severely impacted. Controls at borders could cause significant delays, not least in transport and logistics for ports. • EU funding: UK entities will cease to be eligible as Union entities for the purpose of receiving EU grants and participating in EU procurement procedures. Unless otherwise provided for by the legal provisions in force, candidates or tenderers from the UK could be rejected. 3. Limited trade agreement: The EU27 rejects key elements of the White Paper. May then pursues a (time) limited free trade agreement with Brussels, outside both the Single Market and customs union. Parliament approves the deal. 4. Britain stays in the Single Market & Customs Union: Impasse continues, May pushes a limited Canada-style free trade agreement. Parliament vetoes the plan – so membership continues. 5. No Brexit: Either through i) a second referendum – either before or during the transition period or ii) an extension to Article 50, or iii) a General Election where the winning party stood on a Remain platform. On the political front, in the next year we could see a possible leadership election for Mrs May, or a General Election or a second referendum to get support for the deal from the country. Either way, there’s going to be some very nervous counting of votes ahead, as Britain heads for the Exit. •
