Editor’s Letter

We were about to say how lovely it is to see things finally opening up, when Boris changes his mind... So, I’m opening with an apology for any inaccuracies contained in this issue of BN5. The announcement of a four-week extension to current restrictions came only last night, as we send the magazine to print, although it’ll be old news by the time you read this. We haven’t been able to contact all the clubs and groups who may have arranged events, so please do check with them before you venture out. It does feel that the only certainty is uncertainty at the moment, which is why we turned to our favourite theme for this month’s cover; wildlife. It’s so good to see the verges being allowed to flower and less use of strimmers and pesticides in gardens and public spaces. It allows these beautiful butterfly pollinators to do their crucial work and us to enjoy their presence in our gardens and on our country walks. Charlotte Owen from Sussex Wildlife Trust has written us a useful article on identification of these beautiful and diminutive insects. Please look out for our new advertisers this month, it’s great to see businesses starting up in the village. Many people are re-evaluating their lives since the pandemic and there’s no better place to start a new venture than Henfield! Good luck to you all.

Correction to Link article June issue We wrote about the history of the Henfield Medical Centre Link in our May 2021 edition of BN5 Magazine. Unfortunately some of the detail was incorrect in the article. Whilst Doctor Squires and Wellings may have had the idea for setting the scheme up, it was in fact set up by Alan Probyn (who has sadly since passed away) and Linda Witten and it was originally called the Henfield Health Centre Link. They were approached by Mrs Scott the Health Visitor at the time as Alan was a retired senior police officer and Linda had previously successfully set up the St Peter’s Church Hall Mother & Toddler Group. Linda is still living in Henfield, as she has for the past 42 years. We would like to thank Linda’s daughter Sarah Witten for providing us with the correction, we would also like to send our heartfelt thanks to Linda for her hard work and dedication in setting up this invaluable service for the village.

Amanda Shaw Solicitors, Moving On Up

The hardworking team at conveyancing firm Amanda Shaw Solicitors helps their clients to move house every day, but recently they made the decision to move themselves. The business has been based in founder Amanda Shaw’s own home since 2007, and has been growing fast - they needed more space. Having hosted the business in her own home for so many years, Amanda decided that the time was right for a more distinct separation between home and business. So, at a time when every other business was becoming more home-based, Amanda Shaw Solicitors has moved out of home and into an office. After an extensive search for a suitable location in the local area, Amanda was delighted to find a perfect office space in one of the converted farm buildings at Pondtail Farm, on the beautiful Knepp Castle Estate. With ample room for future expansion, the building is surrounded by stunning scenery, and they also have some wonderful neighbours such as The Green People and artisan bakery Country Farm Cakes. The team has quickly settled in and they are delighted to have made the move. They’ve kept their existing phone number, so if you’re moving soon too, get in touch for conveyancing services on the usual number 01403 710742.

George’s Story for Sunflower Memories

“In 2011, my husband George was diagnosed with lung cancer. His condition deteriorated rapidly, to the point where I was struggling to cope and recognised that he needed specialist nursing care from St Barnabas House. On arrival at the hospice they were able to control George’s sickness and pain. He died within 36 hours of arriving but the care they provided during this time was incredible. “Following George’s death, I was supported by a lady called Rosemary, a bereavement buddy provided by St Barnabas. Rosemary helped me learn to live in spite of the fact that I’d lost the person I loved most in the world. I would have struggled without her. Now, Rosemary and I are the best of friends. I went to the Sunflower Memories service at the hospice the summer after George died. It was a beautiful experience. Everything was about the future, hope and the way forward. It was so uplifting. A hospice like St Barnabas isn’t just a place to die. It helps you to live the rest of your life in the best possible way you can. Join us to ‘Walk for Louise’

Please put a date in your diary for Sunday 22nd August when the Henfield community comes together to ‘Walk for Louise’. Louise Clark, who passed away very suddenly earlier this year, was well known to the St Peter’s Church and school community. She was a bright and energetic spark who loved nature, walking and children. Louise was passionate about Children’s Church and was deeply involved with St Peter’s Little Fishes as well as a Governor at St Peter’s School. Louise’s friends, the Church community and wider village want to celebrate Louise’s life, so the idea of walking from one of the three Parish Churches (St Peter’s Henfield, St Giles in Shermanbury and St Peter’s Woodmancote) for which she was Administrator seemed fitting and echoes Louise’s love of walking and nature. The three routes avoid major roads and follow twittens and footpaths where possible. All three walks will come together at the wonderful Sussex Prairies Garden where walkers will enjoy free entry to the gardens on presentation of a wristband to be issued at the churches (with thanks to Paul and Pauline McBride), children’s entertainment and music from the Soho Village Jazz Band. Please feel free to purchase wellearned cake and refreshments, too! Donations can be made en-route or via an online platform, there is no charge to join the walk but you may wish to fundraise or ask your friends to sponsor you. All money raised will be donated to St Peter’s Church where it will be well used for their Children’s Church projects and the Little Fishes group. The event is a collaboration between St Peter’s Church, Henfield Parish Council, Community Partnership and other local organisations. We’ll have more information in August BN5, watch this space!

Horsham Matters is calling on the community to saddle up and join in its latest event, Pedal Against Poverty, to fund food for families in need over the school summer holidays. The charity will be providing food for 220 children and their families every week throughout the school holidays, on top of its everyday foodbank sessions (6 static sessions and 6 from its mobile foodbank hub). Pedal against Poverty aims to bring the community together in a relay to cycle on static bikes, either individually or in teams, to reach a target of 5,000km cycled. The event will take place live at the following venues: Wednesday 7 July - Slinfold Golf & Country Club - 10am-6pm; Friday 9 July - Bluecoats Sports Centre - 10am6pm; Saturday 10 July - Horsham Matters Charity Shop - 10am-5pm Registration is free, but the charity is asking for a donation of £20 from individuals and a pledge to raise £200 from teams of 4 or more, cycling in half-hour slots or one hour-plus for teams. Henfield Shed welcomes High Sheriff of Sussex

The Henfield Shed was honoured to welcome Dr Tim Fooks FRCP, the High Sheriff of Sussex when he visited The Shed in April. Dr Fooks’ interest in the Shed movement stems from his understanding of the causes and effects of loneliness and isolation during his long career in General Practice and he chose to focus on the theme of ‘Safeguarding the Vulnerable’ during his term of office. The primary objective of the Henfield Shed is to promote social inclusion by preventing people from becoming socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. During his visit, Dr Fooks was able to learn firsthand about how the Henfield Shed came about and about its involvement in the local community. He was given a tour of the workshop and was shown a number of articles produced or repaired by members of the Henfield Shed. Because of the pandemic, personal visits by Dr Fooks have had to be severely curtailed during his year in office so we were particularly honoured that he chose to visit The Henfield Shed. During his time with us, he was able to meet a number of members – albeit socially distanced – and to discuss with them their experiences of being a member of the Henfield Shed, and to learn from them, first hand, how membership has benefited them personally. Dr Fooks has offered to give us a talk on the causes and effects of loneliness and we look forward to welcoming him to Henfield in the near future.

July 2021. Eddie said: “I would encourage you to get involved in the YMCA DownsLink Challenge to help homeless young people and put them back on the path to independence.” Money raised by the event will go towards funding the charity’s work to both tackle and prevent youth homelessness right across Sussex and Surrey. YMCA DownsLink Group is the largest youth charity in Sussex and Surrey and every night provides a safe home to more than 750 local young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. In addition, it reaches a further 10,000 vulnerable young people and their families every year through a range of services. Since the start of the pandemic, the charity has seen a huge increase in the number of vulnerable young people reaching out for its support, so fundraising has never been more important. Everyone is being asked to raise a minimum of £50 but anyone raising over £150 will be entered into a prize draw to win a hamper of ‘goodies’. Registration is just £10 which covers the cost of putting on the event and includes a branded T shirt and finisher’s medal. JULY 2021 | News The Herbert family, who live in Woodmancote, said: “Our father was a huge movie fan and would have been delighted to see Shrine on the big screen scaring new audiences around the world. The film captures the creeping feeling of classic Herbert horror that his fans knew and loved, bringing his English voice to a modern American setting. We’re thrilled that The Unholy will once again gather people together in cinemas to be terrified out of their wits – Dad would have loved that! How better to end a year of horrors than in a cinema with a story by Britain’s Grand Master?” At the time of going to print, the film is showing in local cinemas.

The service forms part of a trial which will run from May 2021 to January 2022. Over 800 tonnes of textiles and 130 tonnes of small electricals are thrown away in rubbish bins in the Horsham District every year. Booking a free collection of these items will save valuable resources from going to waste. Kettles, toasters, irons, hairdryers, radios, electronic toys, power tools and many more small electricals and unwanted textiles including clothes, shoes and towels will be able to be recycled using the new trial service. Many of these items often stop working but could be repaired, they may be unwanted but have re-use value to others, so the Council is urging residents to consider re-use and repair options where possible and only use this service for broken items.

01273 494002

For more information and to book your collection please go to www.horsham.gov.uk/recycling Batteries should be placed in a small, clear plastic bag (such as a sandwich bag or food bag) and the bag placed on top of either green-top rubbish bins or blue-top recycling bins on the usual collection day. They should not be placed inside recycling or rubbish bins.

2023 Review of Parliamentary constituencies

The Boundary Commission for England is the independent organisation responsible for reviewing Parliamentary constituency boundaries in England (see below for other parts of the UK). They have recently published a formal report and recommendations for changes to parliamentary constituency boundaries and are consulting on their proposals. Under the proposed changes, Henfield will become part of the Shoreham Constituency. Recent changes to the law make it very likely that their recommendations from this review will be implemented and the public are encouraged to participate in the process at www.bcereviews. org.uk/ You can use this website to: view current constituency and local authority boundaries; view the proposals for new constituency boundaries; and submit a response directly to them about their proposals. From the second consultation period onwards, you will also be able to: view the responses submitted by others; and submit a comment directly to us, supporting or contesting a response from somebody else. To help you use the website effectively, the Boundary Commission have produced a short and simple step by step guide on the website: just click on the ‘How to’ link at the top of the page. Consultation is currently open until Monday 2nd August 2021 - please make sure they receive your response by that date at the latest, or it will not be considered.

he Henfield Haven stayed open throughout all the recent lockdowns, operating the Henfield Helpline for those in need, as well as providing fresh meals for collection and delivery. Now that restrictions are beginning to ease, we are delighted to announce that the Henfield Haven has resumed ‘business as usual’, whilst still respecting the latest Government guidelines. High needs care will restart on Monday 5th July and we will be offering day-care every Monday and Wednesday. Many of the familiar faces from pre-lockdown days are back with us, both as customers and carers. The Thursday Club restarts on 8th July with a range of stimulating activities, quizzes, bingo as well as delicious lunches. The next Community Lunch will be held on Sunday 8th August (booking is essential). Weather permitting, we are hoping that people will be able to enjoy their lunch in our beautiful garden. If you haven’t visited recently, our grounds are looking amazingly colourful and well-kept thanks to the continuing efforts of the volunteer Garden Gang. We now have a fantastic new 9-seater minibus specially adapted with an electric wheelchair lift, all ready to support our customers. We would particularly like to thank Alex and Richard of Coles Automotive for all their hard work sourcing, servicing and MOT’ing the minibus and for generously agreeing to sponsor looking after the vehicle going forward with free mechanic hours. Thanks also to all our other supporters in the local community who helped us purchase the minibus. We hope to make it available for community use when it’s not needed at the Haven which is likely to be evenings and weekends.

01273 494002

Since relaunching in 2015 The Henfield Haven has become crucial to the wellbeing of our local community. However, we are totally reliant on the generous donations we receive from local individuals and businesses, as well as the sterling support we receive from local volunteers. We currently urgently need more volunteers to work in the kitchen, the Haven Café and to help out with other activities. So if you have a few hours to spare we would love to hear from you. We also need a Cook in the main kitchen to cover for sickness and holidays. For more information about donating or volunteering or about the care that we will be able to offer from the beginning of July, please call us at the Henfield Haven on 01273 494747, email manager@henfieldhaven.org, or see our website www.henfieldhaven.org

miles of Henfield – look out for our big yellow van out and about locally! MeloVelo is a family run business and spending time as a family is a huge part of why we started up. One of our favourite parts of the job is repairing and building bikes for kids: cycling has given all of us at MeloVelo thousands of hours of fun and freedom and part of our mission is to encourage as many young people as possible to get out and get riding safely! Cycling has grown massively in the past year and is a fantastic way to explore your local area and increase your health and cardiovascular fitness. We also run bike safety and basic repair courses locally where we try to teach self-sufficiency when cycling. Keep an eye on our social media @melovelouk for when the next session will be. For a relatively small place, Henfield has a huge amount going on and has a great atmosphere. We love the genuine support that the village shows local businesses and we are proud to be a part of the community. We hope to grow MeloVelo from humble beginnings and intend to have a shop in Henfield this time next year where we can sell as well as repair bikes. We look forward to meeting you!

A voluntary brigade, as today, all members’ jobs and homes had to be within running/cycling distance of the station. There was the last man, running up the High Street. Up, onto the engine, a flick of the whip and the brigade were off at rather stately, but determined pace. t has been a long time but at last it looks as though things are getting back to a more normal way of life. Over the last few weeks, the Henfield Hall has been open for some activities allowed under government guidelines including its use as a polling station for the elections on 6th May. Many of you will have seen then for the first time the refurbished Main Hall which a volunteer group worked hard on during the summer of 2020. It has been difficult to accept that the results of that hard work have been locked away for so long. The newly refurbished Henfield Hall with its excellent kitchen facilities, licensed bar and beautiful garden offers the ideal venue for hosting family parties, wedding receptions and charitable events. For further enquiries our Hall Steward, David, will be happy to help you. Please phone him on 01273 493365 / 07808 571 784 or email him at thehenfieldhall@btinternet.com. The coming months sees the return of many regular activities, clubs and societies and we will be pleased to welcome you all back again. There are also some special events to look forward to, some of which are detailed below: On Tuesday 27th July the Henfield Art Club are inviting you to join them in an evening with Ronnie Ireland in the Main Hall at 7 for 7.15pm. This is a great opportunity to see the skills of an artist at work. Tickets are £5 and are available

from GalleryBN5 on the Henfield High Street. Members are asked to book via maggie@henfieldartclub.co.uk Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th October sees Henfield Theatre Company return to the stage for the first time in nearly two years with a hilarious play ‘The Government Inspector’ which takes a comic look at Russian corruption in the 1830’s. Following this just after Christmas the Company will be performing a great favourite ‘Treasure Island the Panto’ which promises plenty of fun and entertainment for the whole family. For more information and tickets see their website www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com. The evening of Tuesday 19th October sees the return to the Henfield Hall of the CineMobile with its new projector, high quality sound and large screen – a great place to enjoy the latest top film releases locally. For ticket information and to book see their website www.ticketsource.co.uk/cinemobile. The Henfield Hall is also the home to the Henfield Museum which gives a wonderful insight into Henfield’s past. Regular special displays and events highlight particular features and historical activities within the village – see the article on page 24 of this magazine. We look forward to seeing you very soon.

t’s high summer and the air is full of butterflies. Garden favourites like the Red Admiral and Speckled Wood may be joined by exotic Painted Ladies all the way from North Africa - but some of our most beautiful butterflies are the least colourful. Shying away from the garish yellow of the Brimstone and the exuberant red of the Peacock, the whites have chosen a sleek, minimalist look. Among the commonest is the ubiquitous Cabbage White – a title applied interchangeably to the closely related, yet subtly different, Large White and Small White. As you might have guessed, size is often the best way to tell them apart and the Large White is a much stronger flyer. Its bright white wings are tipped with black and, in the female, finished with two dark spots, whereas the Small White’s markings are paler. Their hungry caterpillars do indeed feast on

cabbages – and sprouts, broccoli, radishes and rocket - earning them a terrible reputation among gardeners and allotment-holders. Of course, the butterflies existed long before we cultivated their beloved brassicas, and they will also lay their eggs on garlic mustard, wild mignonette and sea kale along the coast. Often mistaken for yet completely innocent of the Cabbage Whites’ perceived crimes is the Green-veined White. This really is a subtly beautiful butterfly, with delicate dark lines tracing its white forewings and distinctive green veins on the undersides. These are best displayed while at rest, although the green colour is an optical illusion created by black scales atop a creamy yellow background. This species prefers damp meadows and woodland rides where females seek out cuckooflower, hedge mustard and watercress. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

JULY 2021 | Local interest

Not every white butterfly is subtle though, and the unmistakable Marbled White sports a flamboyant chequerboard pattern. Somewhat surprisingly, it belongs to the ‘browns’ rather than the ‘whites’ and is related to the Gatekeeper, Ringlet and Meadow Brown. It shares their love of flowery grassland and has a preference for purple - from thistles and knapweeds to field scabious and wild marjoram. The grandest of all must be the White Admiral, whose black velvet wings are boldly striped with white. This high-flying woodland butterfly glides gracefully around the canopy, occasionally swooping down to nectar on bramble blossom or lay eggs on honeysuckle. When settled, it offers a glimpse of the spectacular orange and white underwings that truly set this aristocrat apart.

To find out exactly how the UK’s butterflies are faring, this year’s Big Butterfly Count is now underway. It’s the world’s largest butterfly survey, proving valuable data about our butterfly populations. Taking part is as easy as spending 15 minutes outside, noting the butterflies you see. There’s a free app and ID chart available from www.bigbutterflycount.org and whatever you spot, remember to send in your sightings by the end of August.

What do you buy for the man who has everything? That was the question that must have been running through my sister’s mind when she was trying to think of a Christmas present for me last year. While I admit that I am not the easiest person to buy for, there are loads of things that I don’t have. I don’t have an electrical screwdriver, I don’t have Star Wars episode VIII on DVD and I don’t have a tennis racket. However, what I do now have is a set of whittling knives, courtesy of my younger sibling… Actually, I have always enjoyed a bit of carpentry and so one idle afternoon I decided to give whittling a go. Being ever so thoughtful, my sister had also included a book on whittling with some useful ideas to get the amateur whittler started. The first chapter featured the arbitrary info on safety when whittling with a picture of someone dressed in chain mail gloves, thick leather chaps and plastic goggles. Not wanting to look like a blacksmith at a jousting tournament (and also lacking any of this attire), I decided to skip this and begin making a walking stick for my dear Mum. I should point out that my Mum definitely does not need a walking stick for ambulatory purposes but had cited an interest in having one for going out on dog walks with her beloved cocker spaniel, Fennel. It didn’t take long to begin fashioning a suitable stick with some etching in the handle – unsurprisingly, whittling knives are particularly adept at shaving wood. It took a little longer (about two thirds down the stick) for me to experience that they are also particularly adept at stabbing through human flesh. It appears that a pair of Jeans aren’t as robust as some leather chaps and one careless stroke had resulted in a one inch hole in my jeans with a matching one inch incision in the top of my left thigh. It was a clean and deep cut, but judging by the rosette of blood that swiftly developed on my jeans, it obviously needed some stitches. Not wanting to bother an A+E already burdened by Covid, I decided to utilise

my day-job skills and patch myself up. It’s not uncommon for us to see dogs with skin lacerations, and if the wound is clean and the patient amenable, we’ll often apply some local anaesthetic and close the wound with skin staples - avoiding the need and cost of a sedation for a more involved procedure. It’s amazing how well dogs tolerate this, so I decided to employ a similar technique. I’m not sure whether human skin is more sensitive or whether I am just less brave (more likely!) than our canine counterparts, but it certainly bought a tear to the eye! While the wound did eventually heal, it did become quite inflamed and relatively uncomfortable at one stage and I was mighty tempted to scratch at my sutures. The whole experience of being on the receiving end of some treatment has made me a lot more considerate and respectful of the many pets that we operate on who generally have to cope with much more severe wounds and after care, all while having no understanding of why they are in the situation they are in. I will certainly empathise a lot more with any pet who chews their sutures out or makes their wound sore by scratching and it’s one of the reasons why we try to use intradermal (under the skin) dissolvable sutures wherever possible. However, while I may now relate to any pet who is paying undue attention to their wound, it still won’t stop me putting a buster collar on them, so best tell them to leave it alone! CHILDREN OF THE MIRACLE Science Fiction in the South Downs

I

f you’re looking for summer read with a huge dose of escapism, a fast-paced and unputdownable roller-coaster of a plot with characters you’ll fall in love with, then Children of the Miracle by local author Daniel Weisbeck will fit the bill perfectly. Since the pandemic hit, we’ve had to adjust to changes in our lives which would have seemed unthinkable and almost fictional in pre-Covid times. The main storyline of Daniel’s book, an environmental crisis and global pandemic with strong themes of nationalism and racism, have unsettling parallels with our current global situation. It’s incredible to think that Children of the Miracle was written well before the Covid19 virus broke free from Wuhan; but the novel feels all the more credible and believable since our recent lived experiences. This is Daniel’s first book and it’s been met with critical success and accolades, including the most exciting of all, the 2021 Science Fiction category winner in the Indie Reader Discovery Awards. Judges said: “An absolutely astounding and riveting dystopian thriller, Daniel Weisbeck’s Children of the Miracle is packed with interesting characters, action and intrigue on every page as readers explore a post-pandemic era and the vast possibilities of science.” 44 | BN5 Magazine

The fictional Sanctuary of Europe and Sanctuary of the Americas featured in his books are a million miles from the idyllic countryside at the foot of the South Downs in Fulking, where Daniel lives with his partner Frank, three dogs, two rescued ex-racehorses and around thirty sheep. Writing in the peace and tranquillity of his Sussex home is a huge contrast with Daniel’s previous life as a software and AI technology specialist in London, but it’s this background that gave him the ideas and understanding of scientific possibilities, of the potential harms and the ways science can be utilised for good.

“An absolutely astounding and riveting dystopian thriller, Daniel Weisbeck’s Children of the Miracle is packed with interesting characters, action and intrigue on every page as readers explore a post-pandemic era and the vast possibilities of science.” Indie Reader Discovery Award Daniel said: “I started writing Children of the Miracle over two years ago, before the Covid-19 outbreak and Gorge Floyd protests. Unfortunate or not, good science fiction has often been the www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

foreboder of such devastating events and turns of society. I wasn’t shocked to see the themes of my new book in the headlines just as I was launching.”

“Daniel Weisbeck’s ‘Children of the Miracle’ is a thought-provoking, suspense-laden dystopian thriller that explores a frighteningly familiar nottoo-distant future where the world is struggling to cling to life in the wake of a deadly pandemic. Weisbeck draws heavily on a wide variety of well-established genre tropes that immediately call to mind elements of futuristic epics like Blade Runner and West World...” James W, Amazon. He continued: “Society will continue to turn to technology as part of the solution to the pressing

01273 494002

problems of our times. Children of the Miracle explores a world where diversity is not a matter of birth or evolution but design. Whether a simple change to eye colour or an entirely new species, the ultimate question remains if we can ever build a world without racism. While Children of the Miracle is meant to be a fun, smart, sci-fi romance, the underlying message is that technology, for all the promise and hope it can offer, will always be in the hands of humans who are fundamentally flawed. Technology is neither good nor bad, merely a reflection of the minds that create it.” Daniel has utilised his lockdown time well with the production of the recently released sequel, Oasis One and a short story, Ascension. Whether you’re a lover of science fiction or not, these books are filled with a wonderful humanity and are entirely relatable. With the fast-paced storylines of The Hunger Games series and the fantastical possibilities of a Philip Pullman novel, Daniel’s books will have you gripped from the first page to the last; you might even spot a couple of local placenames and references too!

A

round 138,0001 girls in the UK miss at least one day of school each year… and all because of period poverty. Period poverty means not being able to afford period products such as tampons or sanitary towels. What this means in reality is that a significant number of girls and women don’t have a safe and hygienic way to deal with their periods – something that will potentially affect them every month (with the exception of pregnancies) for around 30-40 years of their life. That’s a huge and unavoidable financial burden, and one that’s felt the most by those who can least afford it. And whilst many may think this is an issue which only affects developing countries, it’s actually a very real problem here in the UK. According to research carried out in 2017, 10% of girls aged between 14-21 years have been unable to afford to buy period products and 12% have had to improvise period products (for example using tissue paper or socks), due to affordability2 . The arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the period poverty problem as many family incomes have shrunk or disappeared due to furlough and job losses. And if all this wasn’t bad enough, period poverty is compounded by the continuing social stigma attached to periods. Even now in the 21st century, nearly half of girls aged 14-21 in the UK are embarrassed by their periods3 and many find

it difficult to talk to their parents or teachers about them. The impact of all this on girls lives can be enormous, affecting not only their self-esteem but also their education – 68% of girls in the UK have said they have felt less able to pay attention in class at school or college whilst on their period4. And if a girl misses just one day of school every time she has a period, that adds up to a lots of missed lessons over the course of her school life, putting her at a distinct educational disadvantage. It’s a tough challenge that no-one should have to face. Here at BN5 we are pledging to do our bit to help end period poverty. We are building on our Henfield Foodbank work and are asking the enormously generous Henfield community to think about donating period products such as tampons and pads, as well as food items to our Food Bank baskets. The collection baskets are still currently situated in Budgens and the porch of St Peters Church. The wonderful Stokes Newsagents in Henfield has recently set up a ‘help yourself’ table for nappies and sanitary products, so if you know anyone who is struggling, or if you yourself are, please pop in, all items are free and situated near the back door where they can be accessed discretely. They also collect nappies, sanitary towels and tampons if you would like to donate. Thank you for your support.

10 ways to reduce your business tax bill Here are some fairly straightforward tax saving actions for the owner-managed business: 1.

2. 3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

8.

9.

Think ahead. It is vital to start thinking about your business’s tax position well before the year end to enable greater flexibility in controlling the tax bill. Pay your spouse a tax-efficient salary. The salary must be sensible and reflect the work carried out (and must be paid). Pay your teenage children. Make full use of each child’s annual Personal Allowance (£12,500) – ensure this reflects the work carried out (IT, research, cleaning etc?). Invest in equipment that can attract 100% Capital Allowances. The Annual Investment Allowance enables 100% tax relief on purchases of up to £1m in the business accounts year. Review your company’s accounting policies. With different practices in accounting and tax treatments of company expenditure converging, it is important not to overlook the tax implications when changing policies and practices. Research & Development tax relief. Businesses conducting work on genuinely innovative research and development should check to see if you qualify for the very valuable R&D tax reliefs available. In addition to significantly reducing tax bills for those companies in a tax paying position, loss-making companies can generate actual cash repayments from HMRC under this regime. Consider changing to the Flat Rate VAT Scheme. Under the Flat Rate Scheme, smaller businesses (those with turnover excluding VAT less than £150,000) do not need to calculate the VAT liability from invoices received and issued. Instead you pay VAT as a flat rate percentage of your gross turnover. This is sometimes easier to administer and may result in you paying less VAT. Pay into a Pension Scheme. Employer contributions into a pension can provide significant tax savings for the employee and employer. Tax free benefits.
