We’re wishing you all a heartfelt Happy New Year, and I don’t think I’ve ever meant it so sincerely as this year! 2020 has been tough and despite promising news of the new vaccine (some of the Henfield care home staff have already received the jab) it seems we’re not out of the woods by any means. This month we’re focussing on something lovely most of us can participate in, virus or not something which is a huge compensation for missing seeing our friends and family indoors. It’s walking; enjoying the trails, hikes, tracks, twittens and links which surround our villages. We’ve had some help from Val Bentley from Henfield Bird Watch and Libby Morris of Little Plover. Libby has illustrated our cover and the charming birds in the article on page 20. Pull on your wellies, entice your children away from their screens and see how many of the birds you can spot on the circular walk. If you’ve got your phones please take a photo during your walk, it doesn’t have to be one of the birds (flighty little things may not pose for you!) but maybe a close-up or a landscape, we don’t mind. Email me with your favourite (and an age if under 18) and we’ll enter you in a competition and add them to our Facebook page. Here’s to 2021!

Brass Fusion Pop Up Festive Concerts
With indoor venues closed it’s been a challenging few months for local bands, but restrictions haven’t stopped Brass Fusion from performing their Christmas favourites around the village! Sian and Martin Buss arranged for mini outdoor performances at Swains Farm Shop, Red Oaks Care Home and Upper Mead Care Home in December. All were greeted with great delight, especially by staff and residents at the two care homes. Band members performed in the grounds of the two homes, thoroughly entertaining residents who had seen very few people over recent months. Linda Ryan from Red Oaks said: “The residents absolutely loved it, one of them commented that it was a lovely way to start Christmas by hearing live music again, for the first since lock-down began.”

Henfield Birdwatch 2019 Survey Book
We have been at it again in 2019. Lots of people sporting binoculars, tripods and telescopes have been spying on the daily life of the birds in the parish and making copious lists in dog-eared notebooks. Local people have been glued to their windows listing the birds that have visited their gardens while others have sent in sightings by e-mail or Facebook. The result: This splendid image of the fast declining Turtle Dove is one of many in the booklet taken locally by our members along with some excellent artwork by Will Green. The booklet is jam packed with articles which together give a lively and authoritative account of what has been using the varied habitat that our village offers. Although scruffy looking scrubland, marsh, reed beds, old woodland, stubble filled winter farmland, derelict barns and the like provide the major bird heaven our gardens are an increasingly important haven and food station which is reflected by people recording 69 species from their kitchen windows. In the booklet you can find out how those enigmatic summer visitors from Africa, Swifts and House Martins, have benefitted from help given by house owners round the village and retailers in the High Street; how our Nightingales are still bucking the trend of national decline; when to expect the arrival and departure of our summer tourists like the assorted Warblers, Cuckoos and Swallows then our winter pilgrims from the frozen north like the various ducks on the Levels and Fieldfares nicking the holly berries; what it’s like to be a new member of Henfield Birdwatch; head guru Mike Russell’s views and thoughts and much more. Henfield was home to 115 species in 2019 and the village can be proud of that. While embracing change let’s hope we can find ways of preserv-

Library car park works 2021
At the time of going to print, we have just been informed by Horsham District Council of works which will be carried out to undertake major resurfacing and remarking in the Library Car Park starting in mid-January through until mid-March 2021. The southern end of the car park will remain open during the first half of the works (18 January to 12 February) but the whole car park will be closed during the second half of the works (15 February to 12 March). Unfortunately we’ve not had a formal press release from Horsham District Council yet, but indications are that season ticket holders will be given alternative arrangements for the duration of the closure. Season ticket holders will be informed in person over the next few weeks. Dates stated here are subject to change and we’ll update the BN5 Facebook page and February edition with any further news. Information boards will be on site on the run-up to the works.

Art at the Henfield Haven
This January Maggie Knight is treating us with a selection of her sought after works in the café area of Henfield Haven whilst other members of the Henfield Art Club are showing in the larger room. Maggie’s passion is oil painting and may occasionally incorporate acrylic and collage. She loves the freedom of oil, the canvas, the brush, the palette knife and that each new painting poses a fresh challenge in observation, interpretation, colour and technique. The result is there for us to enjoy. And do remember, artists donate a minimum of 30% of any purchase to support the good work of the Haven. I thank the artists from Horsham and Henfield who exhibited in 2020 and I look forward to 2021 becoming a better one for the Haven and all of us.

Can I look inside a beehive before I start to see whether or not beekeeping is it ‘for me’? I The tutor is Roger Patterson, who started beekeeping in 1963. He has been teaching, demonstrating and writing about the craft for well over 40 years. This is a popular annual event, now in its sixteenth year, but adapted for webinar presentation for 2021. Organised by the Wisborough Green Beekeepers Association, this day makes a good grounding for the practical ‘Preliminary Sessions’ that we normally run at our teaching apiary near Wisborough Green. If Covid 19 restrictions still prevent these from taking place, we intend as an alternative to produce video’s to help new beekeepers. Remembering Alfred Sturt
Back in November 2017 we featured an article on those Henfield residents who lost their lives at the battle of Passchendaele in the First World War. The granddaughter of Alfred Sturt, Dorothy Whitty, got in touch with us to point out that as her grandfather’s body was unfortunately never recovered, he was not buried at Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium as we incorrectly stated in the article but is honoured there. Dorothy would love to hear from any descendents of either Alfred or his wife Kate (nee Malthouse) in the BN5 community who have any photographs to share, as she has no idea of what her grandparents looked like. Alfred Sturt had two daughters Kitty and Violet (Dorothy’s mother) and was uncle to both Harold Sturt and Alice Sayers (Harold and Alice’s father James and Alfred were brothers). The Henfield Club’s Time Capsule
The Henfield Club continues to make history and to honour that of the past. In this respect material to include in a Time Capsule (TC) has been in preparation since the start of the Club’s Centenary Year, 2020. The capsule will contain selected copies of BN5 magazine, the Parish Magazine, photographs of past years Remembrance Sundays to provide contrast with this year’s ‘Hands, Face, Space’ public health advice. Recordings of various local people with Sussex accents have also been made and a copy of the Centenary Events planned for 2020, (albeit Covid
19 pandemic curtailed most of these) has been included. The capsule contains membership lists and lists of the clubs and organisations regularly using the Henfield Club. There will also be a selection of member’s memories of local life as well as Club events, sports and festivals. All in the hope that some may still exist in the future or be re-resurrected! Henfield Winter Wildlife `Walk
Redwing
T
Only present in the UK during the winter months, Redwing are small, beautiful thrushes that you will often see in areas where Fieldfare are present. The key features of a Redwing are a creamy strip across the eye, as well as the rusty red flank patches that start under their wings.
here are plenty of opportunities to go wildlife spotting in an around Henfield, even in the depths of winter! Local wildlife illustrator Libby Morris from Little Plover has collaborated with Val Bentley at Henfield Birdwatch, creating a guide to local birds that you can easily see, together with a local walking route. Why not see how many you can spot on your favourite village walk? Libby has illustrated some of the 30 species of birds she and Val spotted on a 2.5mile circular walk. The walk starts from the Downslink Car Park on West End Lane (next to the Railway Tavern) at map reference TQ 205162. Head north on the Downslink until just before the River Adur at Betley Bridge, where there is a kissing gate on the left heading south west towards the river. Follow the river bank south (this section is not pushchair friendly and can be extremely muddy). To return to the village you can turn left at the first signed footpath past Chates (this path is currently closed) if there is no flooding, and then right to meet Stonepit Lane, or at the second signed footpath along the Fisherman’s Path to reach Stonepit Lane again. All along the walk there are plenty of hedgerows where you may see some or all of the following birds:
Goldcrest
Britain’s smallest bird, these tiny little birds weigh the same as a 20p piece! They are common all year round in the UK although, amazingly, Goldcrest travel from Scandinavia to Britain in large numbers for the winter months. They are small, olive green birds with pale, creamy bellies and a striking yellow stripe edged with black on their crown. You will usually hear them before you see them, listen for an extremely high pitched ‘tseep’ call coming from trees. 20 | BN5 Magazine

Robin
Britain’s best-loved bird, the Robin is very likely to cross your path on this route. It has a strong orange belly and face and a dusky-brown back and wings. Robins aren’t particularly shy, you may well have one come up and say hello!
Blue Tit
A common bird in gardens, Blue Tits are easy to identify with their bright blue crowns and wings, greenish backs and yellow bellies with strong black markings across their eyes and under their beaks. They are fairly small and you will usually see them flitting about in trees.
Chaffinch
These beautiful finches have been seen on this particular route in large flocks. The male is easily recognised, with his strong triangular bill, blueish-grey cap and brown-red belly and face. In flight, the strong white wing bar across both wings is a good indicator of this species.
Blackbird
One of the most common birds on this route, Blackbirds are present in abundance on the pathway and in the trees. The male is black, with a yellow bill and eye-ring whilst the female is a dusky-brown. They are fairly large and therefore easy to see. Keep an eye out for them foraging in the undergrowth.
Long-Tailed Tit
Bobbing from tree to tree in excited gangs, these lovely little birds are fairly noisy and therefore fairly easy to find, if you are lucky. They are always on the move and they don’t keep still for long! The main feature of this bird is the long black tail which you can easily spot from a distance. Their belly is a dusky pink with a white face and chest. Their wings, tail and back are black. 01273 494002

A common presence to many of us despite being red-listed, Starlings are small, noisy birds with a beautiful, iridescent plumage during breeding season but a dark plumage with strong pale speckling in the winter months. Listen out for their varied calls of whistles, chatters, trills and rattles.
Fieldfare
Only here during the winter months between October and April, Fieldfare are distinguishable from other thrushes by their colourful plumage and their large size. They roam the countryside in flocks gorging themselves on berries. They’re very loud, listen out for a cackling chatter.

Henfield Hall F
or the past 40 plus years the Hall has been the centre of community life for Henfield, providing a base for many of the 200 clubs and societies that flourish in the village. The Henfield Hall was officially opened in November 1974 after several years of hard work and fund raising in the local community. It is totally self funded by the community and is a registered charity, managed by a group of trustees formed by members of the organisations that use the Hall regularly. The Hall provides the home for the Parish Council and also houses our local museum which is run by volunteers dedicated to the history of our village and its surroundings. The local amateur theatre company produces up to five shows a year at the Hall and a travelling cinema attends the village regularly. A weekly self help group for the elderly meets socially for lunch and leisure activities. In 2016 a group of volunteers from the Henfield Theatre Company Workshop Team had just completed the redecoration of the Henfield Haven and decided to offer their services to The Henfield Hall. The 2017-2020 Henfield Hall Refurbishment Project was born. Over the past few years the Hall had been suffering badly from a leaking roof, which had damaged the interior. 24 | BN5 Magazine
Funds were raised to repair and replace the roof but the interior was dated, tired and in need of modernisation. The team of volunteers working with the Trustees drew up a Refurbishment Plan which involved some repairs to the exterior of the building as well as a complete redecoration and modernisation of the interior. At this time a local builder – Nigel Parsons, who had worked with the volunteers at the Haven heard about the Refurbishment Project at the Hall and offered his support. With Nigel’s help and teaching, the group carried out repairs and replacement of the rotting facia boarding around the building during the spring/ summer of 2016 and at that time also agreed to a three phase redecoration project: Phase 1 – The Entrance Hall and Foyer 2017; Phase 2 – The Garden Suite and kitchen; Phase 3 – The Main Hall. The Entrance Hall and Foyer was completed during the Summer of 2017 with the Volunteer group working many weeks to complete modernisation of the area with new ceilings and lighting, decoration, carpets and furniture. and materials. The transformation was dramatic and the volunteers were keen to continue with phase 2 the following year. In 2018 the Garden room was closed for two months in the summer and underwent a complete makeover. The wooden ceiling was replaced, LED lighting fitted, new flooring and new curtains created and hung, the room was redecorated and a bright welcoming colour scheme used. The kitchen also underwent some further work with new work tops fitted. By 2019 the Main hall roof was still leaking and plans were submitted with the local planning authority to replace the faulty material. During this period the group carried out general repairs and repainting of some smaller areas that had not been covered by the first phases of the project. The following year, planning permission was granted in order to replace the faulty roof. With a grant from the local authority, this was done at the end of the summer 2020. During July, August and September the Volunteers working under Covid 19 restrictions took advantage of the longer than expected Hall closure and completely stripped out all of the timber cladding in the main hall. began the mammoth job of relining the walls and repairing and preparing the Hall for decoration. As soon as the roof was water tight work began on the complete overhaul of the interior. New ceilings and LED lighting were installed, new double glazed windows fitted, new curtains including the stage drapes made and fitted and the Hall walls and woodwork repainted with the project finishing by the middle of October. Covid 19 has put restrictions on the use of the Hall. However a full cleaning regime has been implemented and we will be able to welcome back groups and organisations following government guidelines. We hope that in the not too distant future we will be able to get back to normal providing full service to the local community groups as well as providing a key entertainment and cultural centre for Henfield. Thanks to the help of the Henfield Theatre Company volunteers and other volunteers, and the support of Nigel Parsons, Brewers Ltd, Tracey Smyth, Howdens Ltd, Hamfelds and Martin Moore SDT Securities, we now have a fabulous updated asset in the village and we look forward to seeing you there soon.

e don’t think anyone in our community should have to go hungry. That’s why here at BN5 Magazine we are supporting the charity Horsham Matters in providing Henfield Foodbank, a local base from which to collect and provide emergency food for those in crisis. We launched the Henfield Foodbank deliveries with Horsham Matters back in August 2019, supported by the wonderful driver volunteers from the Henfield Lions and Henfield BP Guild. Since then, we have delivered over 200 boxes of emergency food provisions in Henfield. In March 2020, just as the first Coronavirus lockdown hit, we launched collection points on Henfield High Street, working with Knight’s Budgens, One Stop Convenience Store and Stokes Newsagents. St Peter’s Church became a collection point in late November 2020. The wonderful residents of Henfield have massively supported the Henfield Foodbank since then, donating over 2,500 food and toiletry items to help people in need – we are truly grateful for all your support. When the collection points are full of donated items, volunteer Roger Bentley empties the baskets and stores the donations in the BN5 Magazine offices ready for collection by Horsham Matters. The charity (who are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks supported by The Trussell Trust), then collect the donations and create nutritionally balanced food parcels of store-cupboard essentials. These are then delivered back to the BN5 Magazine offices where they are stored ready for delivery locally round the village by the BP Guild volunteers, when and where needed. Typical food parcels include items such as breakfast cereals, long life milk, fruit juice, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, tinned beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, tea or coffee, biscuits and snacks. They can also include toiletry items, toilet rolls and non-

standard items such as tomato ketchup, marmite and stock cubes. Treats, crisps and seasonal goodies are often added. upils at Ashurst CE Aided Primary School recently took part in our ‘Annual Sponsored Walks’. Money raised was for the ‘GOSH Charity COVID-19 Appeal’ and the ‘Adivasi Community Media Project’ in India, both chosen by the children. In designated ‘bubble’ groups Y3&4 and Y5&6 pupils set out from school along School Lane, past St James’, Ashurst, and into the magnificent Sussex countryside. We followed woodland paths and open breezy tracks, taking in sights and the sounds as we went. We learnt a lot about the countryside including local history much dating from Tudor times and the geography of the area including the River Adur and Chanctonbury Ring. We saw different methods of farming, including the ‘harvesting’ of the sun, as we passed a local ‘Solar Farm’ with its gleaming black panels. There was an abundance of wildlife including herons along the banks of the river, buzzards flying high overhead and farm animals peacefully grazing as we passed by. We even crept quietly past a badger set, we named it ‘Badger City’ as it ran the whole length of a field! The infants’ walk took us along the Ashurst footpaths, this time pausing at the church to write postcards for parents and carers before making our way to the post-box in Ashurst. Postcards were posted and a picnic lunch was enjoyed before walking back to school tired, but very happy. Many of us through lockdown have used art to express how we feel, so we decided to hold an 34 | BN5 Magazine
‘Art Week’ in school. We chose a sunflower theme to brighten the winter days. We worked in class ‘bubbles’ to create collages, paintings, drawings and poems during the week of activities. Parents and carers saw our work displayed outside using socially distanced viewing areas: “The art was so full of colour and joy!”; “This was a wonderful art exhibition showing some amazing and very talented work across all year groups! There were some beautiful poems too into which much thought & hard work must have gone. Well done to all!”; “What amazing and talented work done by all years. Some of the written work was very moving…” And; “I really enjoyed the different stages of artwork from Reception to Year 6. It was a great achievement”. Just before Christmas we had a lot of fun taking part in our ‘Bubble Christmas Performances’. The infants told the story of the Nativity with the ‘Sleepy Shepherd’, Y3 and Y4 held a ‘Christingle’ service and Y5/Y6 performed ‘Christmas around the World’ using sign language to ‘sing’ Silent Night. We haven’t been able to have audiences in this year but we have shared our fun with video links. We are now looking forward to a bright, happy and healthy Spring Term 2021, we have lots of things planned and look forward to telling you about them soon. ustainable Henfield (SH2030) are starting 2021 on a positive note after all the difficulties that 2020 brought. What really shone through last year was how brilliantly our community worked together to support the things that really matter, even with everything that was happening around the world. Our group’s Recycling Scheme kept going, albeit slightly differently, and Henfield has already diverted a lot of plastic packaging from landfill, raising funds for the Haven and other causes. 2021 will be a key year in the fight against Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss. The UK will hold the presidency of G7 from January 2021 and host the crucial COP 26 Climate Change Conference in November 2021. Reducing emissions, increasing protection of natural areas, cutting waste and conserving water better are all examples of the areas the UK hopes to take a lead in. So how can our Henfield community play its part in bringing this vision of a better world forward? Henfield is a very active community, and we can achieve a lot if we ‘club’ together! To make a real difference we want to encourage our community groups and clubs to reduce the amount of plastics they buy and use and to ask them to work with SH2030 for ‘Sustainability Challenges 2021’. Together we can support each other in finding the best ways to avoid single-use plastic. We’ve asked community groups and clubs to select a Sustainability Ambassador to work with

We’ve already got two challenges for our clubs to kick things off: • Plastic Free Pledge for clubs • 10 Sustainability Challenges We also want each club’s (and your own) ideas on how to best make a difference; to make it achievable and also to be enjoyable. If you’re in a club, get your club involved! If not, why not join with SH2030 as an individual to work together and connect with other like-minded people at the same time? On our website we will provide the low-down about local places to shop without wasting lots of plastic so you can see what you can easily achieve, as well as other tips and ideas for the clubs or for each of you to use on our website, on Facebook and on Instagram. You can compete with each other in your own club, or work together and share your results to see which club can achieve the most! We’ll keep you updated with progress throughout 2021. Make a New Year’s Resolution to reduce singleuse plastic in your club, community, or home. is full of promise in all sorts of ways and the Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) is getting excited about going back on stage with its many planned productions. At the time of writing, we are still in lockdown but the signs are good that we will soon be able to bring some carefully managed productions back to the Henfield stage. HTC has been doing some meticulous planning, not only with regard to its artistic output but also in the field of virus control measures. We are expecting to run the first productions with a limit of about 50 people in the audiences, less than a quarter of the usual capacity and there are plans for various other precautions in line with government guidelines. It will all seem very strange for HTC and our lovely audiences, but who cares if we can go out to the theatre again! And what a bonus that we will be able to do so at the beautifully refurbished Henfield Hall. What productions are in the pipeline? We are all still ready and waiting to open the curtains on The Stepmother, that great play by Githa Sowerby; we have provisional plans for that to go ahead in mid-March but please look out for advertising and check the HTC website for the latest information. The production after that, which we hope will be in June, is something different, this time staged in St Peter’s Church. It is a performance of The Mysteries, written by Tony Harrison; it’s an adaptation of the York, Wakefield, Chester and Coventry cycles of The Mystery Plays. We are presenting the first of three plays to celebrate, belatedly, the 1250th anniversary of the foundation of St Peter’s Church. In October the planned production is Pressure

by David Haig. In the run up to D-Day, June 1944 the Allied forces led by General Eisenhower are poised; 350,000 lives are at stake and the decision whether or not to launch Operation Overlord comes down to the most important weather forecast of all time. The play centres on the true story of James Stagg, the larger than life chief meteorological adviser to the operation, and the tensions between him, Dwight D Eisenhower and an American forecaster with new ideas, Irving P Krick. They knew that the course of the war was going to be determined by their work… and indeed it was. On a very different note, some major fun to look forward to in January 2022 is Treasure Island the Panto – Oh yes it is! Let’s hope that Covid will be BEHIND YOU! This version is written by Ben Crocker. It is, of course, a fun filled romp on the high seas. It’s the story of Jim Hawkins, his “mum” and their adventures with Squire Trelawney, Long John Silver, his parrot and lots of pirates. And there won’t be a face mask in sight! Oh no there won’t ...

he Henfield coat of arms which is featured on the signs that welcomes visitors to the village looks like it’s been around for hundreds of years, but in fact it was designed by the incredibly talented late Brenda Hobbs who lived in the village for many years. Brenda was born in London in 1934 but her family moved to Brighton when the Second World War began. Whilst attending Brighton High School for Girls she discovered a real talent for art and she went on to study at Brighton Art College. Art remained Brenda’s passion and she was able to make a living from it throughout her life, working at different times as a designer of packaging and advertising artwork. She moved to Henfield with her two children in 1968 when she married her second husband, Michael Hobbs, and she continued to juggle raising a young family with working. 50 | BN5 Magazine
In 1976 Brenda responded to an advert placed by a commercial artist in the Argus and she continued to work with them until 2010, specialising in intricate heraldry painting. Working on vellum with traditional paints and even real gold, Brenda created works of art for individuals, towns, regions and even countries. She worked on commissions for many famous individuals including Alan Titchmarsh and one of the original RAF Dambuster pilots. It was through this work that she received the commission from the then Catholic Priest in Henfield, Father Mark Elvins, to create an official coat of arms for the village in the early 1990’s. And so, rather wonderfully it was that the Henfield village coat of arms was created by a Henfield resident! The unique design incorporates some classic heraldry themes, together with some linked to Henfield’s history. The coat of arms are based on www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

those of the Bysshopp family of Henfield (Henry Bysshopp was the first Postmaster General who introduced the first ever postmark in 1661). Both main churches are represented - the crossed keys of St Peter represent the parish church and the ‘pelican in her piety’ is a symbol of the Eucharist and refers to the dedication of the Catholic Church in Henfield to Corpus Christi. The golden oriole bird atop a thorn bush references the famous 19th century Henfield botanist William Borrer who recorded seeing 14 such birds in a Hawthorn bush. And finally the latin motto ‘Domine Salva Nos’ (Lord save us) was a favourite of Father Mark Elvins who very generously paid for the process. In addition to the Henfield coat of arms, Brenda worked on a range of other creative projects locally. As part of the village millennial project, Brenda also designed the signs that welcome

visitors to Henfield which features the Henfield coat of arms, together with a further two representations of Henfield history - a cricketer and a violet farmer. She also collaborated with Alan Barwick on the millennial village map which is displayed in the village hall and a map for Shiprods Farm. She also created a pennant flag for the local Girl Guides. As well as artwork, Brenda transcribed the original village church and school records for the West Sussex archives. In recent years Brenda suffered from ill health but she was wonderfully cared for by the staff at Upper Mead Care Home, all of whom her husband Michael and son Mark would like to thank. Brenda sadly passed away in August 2020, however her creative talent and generosity live on in the many beautiful works of art she created for our village.
