Editor’s Letter At the time of going to print we are in our second national lockdown which is due to end just after this magazine lands on your doormats. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for our independent shops and businesses, many of whom depend on trade in the run-up to Christmas to tide them through the winter. Our High Street is at the heart of our village. Over the years local businesses have generously sponsored children’s football teams, PTA fundraisers and countless important village charities. They support iconic Henfield events like the Village Fair, donating money, prizes, expertise and time. Here at BN5 Magazine we have worked hard with our business community to launch the Henfield Hampers project this Christmas, to support them through these difficult times. The idea is simple: a range of beautifully packaged, differently themed, unique gift hampers many of them collaborations from our local shops. And the beauty of it all is you can order from the comfort of your own home and enjoy free local delivery! So before you start ordering online, check out what’s here in the village. Please be a community champion and shop locally this Christmas. Wishing you all a safe, healthy and happy Christmas.

PHB sponsor Leonardslee illuminated Christmas spectacular

Thank you Kebab Knight

A big thank you to Musa and the hard-working team at Kebab Knight in Henfield for donating £312.92 to Horsham Matters for the Henfield Food Bank. Musa donated £1 per meal sold for a weekend during half term, to support hungry families during this difficult time. We are very grateful for Musa’s thoughtful donation, our Food Bank deliveries have increased over the recent weeks so this will help Horsham Matters enormously.

Local company PHB Contractors, who worked on the construction of the extended car park at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens this summer, are proud sponsors of this years illuminated Christmas spectacular. The event, which offers a welcome break from the Covid-19 gloom, will take place over three consecutive weekends in December. The gardens will be lit up with light displays and projections onto the historic mansion buildings and the lakes in the Grade I Listed Gardens, with live music and family-friendly theatrical performances for all the family. Leonardslee Illuminated runs on December 4th to 6th, 11th to 13th and 17th to 22nd. Ticket prices are £16 for adults aged 16 and over and £8 for children (free for under two’s). See www.leonardsleegardens. co.uk for more information and to book.

Christmas at The Free Church

We may not be able to celebrate it in quite the same way as usual, but Christmas certainly isn’t cancelled! The Free Church is still planning to have a Service at 9:30am on Christmas Morning – we would love to see you there (barring more restrictions of course). We are also hoping to be in the High Street on the Saturday morning before Christmas, playing Carols and giving out Christmas bags to the children. Throughout December the Church will be decorated with lights, a Christmas Tree and a signpost pointing the way to the North Pole and Bethlehem (a very big thank you to the talented members of the Henfield Men’s Shed for building the signpost for us!). You may like to have your family’s photo taken in front of the Tree and the sign! Our Sheep Trail will also be operating throughout December and all the details and entry form are in this magazine. Let me say another big thank you to everyone who contributed to our Link to Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal. We have taken about 40 wrapped shoeboxes filled with gifts, plus other donated items, to the warehouse for distribution to needy families in Eastern Europe. Well done to everyone involved! Finally, in this unusual and difficult season let’s remember that the real meaning of Christmas is even more important in hard times. God showed his great love for the world by sending us Jesus to be born in Bethlehem and to be our Saviour. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Henfield Helpline Good Neighbours

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought out a lot of good in our society and we have seen that in abundance in Henfield; many residents have volunteered to walk dogs, go shopping and collect prescriptions for those who are more vulnerable. Thank you to all those who have given up their time and continue to do so. As we approach winter we will all need to keep an eye on each other. If you have a neighbour that lives alone, or who is frail, please give them a call every now and again to see if you can help them out and carry on being a ‘Good Neighbour’. The Helpline is still running but on a reduced number of volunteers and may not always able to react as quickly as we were able to earlier in the year so please give us a little notice if you can. You can contact the Henfield Helpline on 01273 494420 and at helpline@henfieldhub.com .The NHS Volunteer Service is still running and likely to continue until March 2021. And can be contacted on 0808 196 33 82.

2021 CALENDAR

Henfield Peacocks Calendar

This calendar is kindly sponsored by local Henfield businesses. All proceeds raised by the sale of this calendar goes towards the ‘Save the Henfield Peacocks’ fund.

After months of gloomy national news, what a welcome respite is was to hear the positive news that the Henfield peacocks have been found a permanent local home. In fact it even put Henfield well and truly on the map as the news spread both nationally and even internationally! To celebrate the Henfield peacocks, local residents have created a 2021 calendar which will be sold through local shops in the run up to Christmas. Sooky Choi said “ It’s full of gorgeous photographs of our peacocks, in the village and photographed by Henfield villagers. Several local businesses have very generously stepped up to sponsor the calendar and local printer David Page is printing it for us. At just £6 each, these calendars will make a perfect small gift and memento of these lovely birds. We have a ‘Save the Henfield Peacocks’ Facebook page and have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page to help with some of the cost of building a safe environment for our boys to live in.” All proceeds of the calendar are going towards the cost of capture and moving of the peacocks to their new home within Henfield.

The Council has arranged for the first 200 independent businesses in Horsham District to receive a free six month membership of the portal and this figure will be reviewed based on demand. The launch of the portal is timely, given the November lockdown, and gives residents an easy way to continue to purchase from any local independent businesses that are trading online in the run up to Christmas. The Virtual Horsham initiative forms part of the Council’s recently launched Buy Local campaign which is supporting local traders that have continued to work tirelessly throughout the Coronavirus to deliver vital services for local people. The overall Buy Local campaign highlights how local traders have adapted to support public health guidelines, putting enhanced measures in place to keep their customers and staff safe. Businesses not able to re-open their premises have adapted their services to provide efficient online buying processes such as click and collect and home deliveries, and this Virtual Horsham portal will enable easier access to these businesses. The Buy Local campaign encourages local people to choose local suppliers either online or in person, as this helps to support a whole network of people behind the scenes. News | DECEMBER 2020 has now been installed in the centre of the bridge, looking upstream towards Betley Bridge and looking over what became the ‘Seals Playground’ this summer. In times other than they are right now we would have held a group event on the bridge to unveil the plaque, but we are where we are and sadly having a mass of people grouped together right now is just impossible. However we encouraged our members to ‘take a selfie with Brian’ as an alternative.

Paul Crowe, Henfield Joggers

Brian’s Bridge – Henfield Joggers

Sadly this year we have lost two active and very popular Henfield Joggers in Rob Thornton and Brian Turrell. Both are much missed and live on in our memories. Brian had a huge affinity for what is officially known as Eaton’s Bridge across the River Adur, partly because he lived in Ashurst so this was his route across to Henfield but also because of his endless conspiracy theories when the old bridge was closed which entertained us no end and to all of us this is, and will always be, “Turrell Bridge” (or just Brian’s Bridge). We all felt this needed to be marked for posterity, and with the permission of WSCC we obtained a plaque, with words agreed by Brian’s family. This

Henfield supports hungry school children

Following the campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford to prevent food poverty, a range of Henfield business’s stepped up to the challenge during the October half term. Goodness Henfield (with Henfield Chiropractic Clinic), Kebab Knight, The George, Relish Café and Stokes offered a range of free, nutritious hot and cold meals throughout the week to those who would otherwise have gone hungry. We’re incredibly proud to live in a community which consistently supports those who are less well-off than themselves.

Volunteer Award for Digby Stephenson

When Henfield Parish Council were approached by the High Sheriff, the Queens Representative in West Sussex, to nominate a volunteer who had gone above and beyond in their work to support our community through lockdown, the name Digby Stephenson immediately came to mind. Having designed and equipped the Henfield Helpline, Digby then worked tirelessly five days a week throughout lockdown at the Henfield Haven to help co-ordinate our volunteers to deliver shopping and medicines to residents who were shielding. I was delighted when Digby called to say he had received a High Sheriff Special Recognition Volunteer Award in the post. Digby said: “2020 will be remembered by all of us as a very unusual and challenging year. For me, helping to organise and operate the Henfield Helpline at the Haven, together with Belinda Samrah, was a very rewarding experience and saw our wonderful community spring into action willingly and most effectively… This award is therefore hugely deserved, but not by me. It is for everyone who played their part in a difficult, and certainly memorable, year.” As well as thanking Digby we should also thank Belinda Samrah and Lorette Mackie who worked alongside Digby, as well as all of the volunteers

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic the Scout Group continued scouting activities online until approval was finally given in September for meetings to resume at the Scout Hut. A lot of work went on behind the scenes by volunteers to enable this to happen: intensive risk assessments; deep cleaning and decorating; installation of sanitizers and signage; and the buying and storing of safety and cleaning materials. Meanwhile outside, the building was shored up with acrow-jacks lent by Nigel Parsons Builders and asbestos was removed by a professional company. The Scout field was cleared of the old shooting range thanks to Peter Haworth-Booth and his tractor, and five trees affected by ‘ Chalara ash dieback’ were removed thanks to Sam Goodridge Gardens. UKPN have also secured the electricity poles and heightened the incoming supply cable. By October the whole Group was enjoying ‘proper’ Scouting again. As group numbers were limited to fifteen, Section leaders had to call on much appreciated parental support. Now with a second lockdown, we’re anticipating that online Scouting will start again and ‘proper’ Scouting put on hold until the New Year. However, looking on the bright side it will give parents, grandparents and friends a chance to volunteer their services to help the Scout Group run efficiently and to expand. Being a grandparent myself, I know that we have a lifetime of skills and knowledge that can genuinely help shape the next generation, including organisational, financial, secretarial, digital and practical skills. If you, or someone you know, can help in any way please contact me on 07929 840321 / secretary@1sthenfieldscoutgroup.co.uk . Stay happy, stay occupied and stay safe.

Henfield Theatre Company Centenary

The Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) arguably dates back to Victorian times but there was, nevertheless, a centenary that slipped past at the end of September this year. The current society was born out of the former Henfield Players (previously known as the Henfield Dramatic Society) and Henfield Choral and Operatic Society when they merged in 1999 to form the Henfield Theatre Company. The Henfield Choral and Operatic Society had its origins under different names as far back as 1886, starting as a purely choral group performing mainly oratorio works in the newly built Assembly Rooms in the High Street. It had been thought that the Henfield Players was founded in 1929 but Remembrance Sunday 2020 an article printed in the November 1920 edition It wasn’t the way Henfield usually commemorates of the Parish Magazine recently came to light and remembrance Sunday, but like many things this that carried the following information: “Henfield year, we adapted to a new way of doing things. Mary Middleton

The end of November this year marked the second anniversary of the sad passing of this lovely lady, following her illness due to breast cancer. Mary was a very cheery soul and an elegant lady , much reflected in the colourful scarves, wraps and pashminas that she loved to wear. She was a familiar figure around the village and always had time and a kindly word for others. Over the years, she touched the hearts of many of us, particularly , those of her three children, six grandchildren, her many friends and fellow parishioners at Corpus Christi Church. Mary will remain forever in our hearts and memories and is deeply missed by us all.

Since the launch in 1997, it’s been a very long and eventful fundraising campaign. But as the old timber hut is now deteriorating very rapidly, hopefully the end is in sight and construction can commence in 2021. The Appeal fund stands at £230,000 plus in excess of £35,000 value in pledges of goods and services. But more funds are still needed and grants are still being applied for and further pledges of goods and services are being sought. Tenders for the phase one shell building are being collected and local companies are being asked to donate materials and services for phase two internal fit-out. the final phase three will be the external lighting, paving and landscaping. Naming rights lasting 10 years are being offered, whereby in return for a £50,000 donation the donor can have the new Centre named after them or their company, e.g. ‘The Blankety Blank Henfield Scout Community Centre’. Individual rooms and the Climbing wall within the Centre can also be named after donors in return for smaller donations. Naming rights ensure that the donors’ company names are regularly seen by all visitors to the Centre, so prove to be a low-cost method of advertising which is recognized by HMRC as an acceptable business tax allowance. Art at the Henfield Haven

A number of members of Henfield’s Art Club are showing at the Henfield Haven during December. As it will be hanging for just one month, the themes and mediums are purposefully mixed. This, it is hoped, will move those enjoying lunch or tea, coffee and cakes in the expanded café areas, to be moved into critical conversations about what they see. The artists showing include: Liz Blake; Fay Bishop; Wendy Cairns; Les Cheeseman; Janet Holter; and Peter Whiting. Any art purchased will help support the running of the Haven.

Coping with grief at Christmas

Christmas can be a very special and magical time of year. But, for those people who are in a difficult place in their life, the festive celebrations can also be very painful. We are often shown pictures of happy, smiling families sitting around a full dinner table enjoying each other’s company, but for many people this is not their reality. And for those who are grieving after the death of a loved one, it can be a really tough time. And this year, with COVID-19 restrictions, things are likely to be even more challenging with limits on who can meet, where and when. But, there are also lots of ways to make Christ-

01273 494002

mas as enjoyable as it can be when grieving a loved one. Here are just a few for you to consider: If you are able to, talk to your family or those who are close to you about how everyone is feeling and what they would like to do to celebrate Christmas this year; Remember everyone grieves differently and you may not all want to do the same things. Don’t put yourself under pressure to do everything that you usually do. Take a moment to think about what is really important this year and focus on that; Try not to feel that you are letting people down if you feel unable to join some activities. Most people understand that you might need to do things differently if your loved one died recently. News | DECEMBER 2020 part found the continuing trading restrictions very difficult, whether that’s due to lockdown, social distancing or economic factors. As a local small business community, we are all in this together and so now feels like the right time to launch the ‘Henfield Business Network’ - a free business networking forum where local businesses can come together to meet, share ideas and discuss current challenges. We hope that building such a network will consolidate that sense of community amongst business owners as well as improving collaboration amongst members, sharing skills and ending business isolation. Initially this would be a monthly ‘virtual’ meet-up although once the COVID restrictions permit, we would aim to meet face to face where possible. Going forward, we would like to involve guest speakers, allow for 1:1 discussion, meet in different venues and allow members to showcase their business. There would also be access to a private Facebook group to enable further group liaison outside the meetings. We want to hear from small business owners in the village and surrounding local area that would be interested in joining this voluntary group. To be a part of this contact us at ian@newboldology. co.uk / 07776 184894 and we can start the process of setting up the first virtual get-together.

PHB are proud to be a sponsor of the Leonardslee Illuminations 2020. The Twelve (Unwanted Pet Gifts on Consecutive) days of Christmas

I love Christmas and I always have done. This year looks set to be a fair bit different to normal – with many people unable to get together as they normally would have done. There may be a silver lining here with fewer of the traditional “family fallouts” that can occur when the perfect mixture of a few too many egg-nogs, a burnt turkey and a longterm feud with the in-laws combine!

going to reinstate that tradition. With Pets in mind, for a bit of fun, I decided to write some alternative lyrics to the Christmas Classic, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. They are a bit contrived, but if you can be bothered, it sort of scans like the original!

With fewer humans about for Christmas, we are going to pay extra special attention to the menagerie of pets that we have – currently standing at 3 dogs, 3 cats, 2 gerbils and a snake (not kept together, for obvious reasons!). While I can’t see them sitting round the table on Christmas day, I’m sure some of them could indulge in a game of “hunt the gravey bone”, or even act as a prop in charades… Before children became the Christmas focal point, we used to put presents for the pets under the tree (as I am sure many people always do), and we’re definitely

DECEMBER 2019 | Festive

T

his Christmas the Henfield BP Guild are going to have a slightly different way of celebrating the Festive Season due to the COVID-19 situation. However we’ve been very lucky as we’ve been allowed into Santa’s ‘Bubble’ so we are planning to bring him round on his sleigh to see you all as usual! We will of course have to maintain social distancing to keep everyone safe, so this year we will not be knocking on doors. But the Christmas carols will be playing and you should be able to hear us coming from afar. We will also plan to have Father Christmas in the Village Square (outside Hawthorn Vets) and at Swains Farm Shop on various dates. If you feel that you would like to kindly donate to our cause there will be some Elves’ on hand with collection buckets. The only task we will not be able to help Santa with this year unfortunately is the delivery of presents on Christmas day. Santa’s busy schedule is as follows (also published at www.henfieldbpguild.btck.co.uk): Wednesday 2nd Dec – Silver Birches, Hoewood, Tottington Drive area, Downs View, Sands Lane, Shoreham Road, New Hall Lane in Small Dole. Saturday 5th Dec – Village Square (outside Hawthorn Vets) - 09.00-13.00. Monday 7th Dec – West End Lane, Bishop Park, Upper Station Road, Church Lane, Church Street, Pinchnose Green area. You know that incredible feeling when you step off the plane and that beautiful wave of warm air engulfs you; clutching your hand-luggage you negotiate passport control, remove the excess English layers, add flipflops and head to the nearest bar for some tapas and an ice-cold beer‌ Well, we can’t promise the entire experience, but with a little adjustment to the central heating and the simple recipes below, we can certainly help to bring back some holiday vibes! Thanks to Iberica, the fantastic local Spanish specialist food suppliers, who sell retail and wholesale from their base at Winterpick Estate in Henfield, you can get some wonderful authentic imported Spanish foodie treats, many at really 2 medium sized potatoes good wholesale prices. They will deliver or you can collect, 3tbsp of extra virgin olive oil please see their website www.ibericafood.com For the sauce: 1 medium sized onion 1 medium sized tomato 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil 1 garlic clove 1 tsp sweet or hot-smoked paprika 1 tbsp flour 1 tbsp water 1 tsp of vinegar Salt 1. Peel and chop the potatoes, onion, garlic and tomato into small chunks. 2. Fry the potatoes in olive oil or roast them until golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside 3. For the sauce, add the onion, tomato and garlic with the olive oil in a pan and cook them for about 5 minutes until soft. Add the spices, flour and vinegar and cook for further 2 minutes 4. Plate the potatoes and drizzle the sauce over them.

3 garlic cloves 2 teaspoon salt flakes 2 egg yolks 1 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1. Crush the garlic, egg yolks and salt in a mortar till you have an intense and combined paste 2. Transfer the garlic, salt and egg paste into a blender. Add the olive oil to the blender. Mix steadily until you have thick mayonnaise 3. Stir in a tablespoon of lemon juice. Season with salt to taste 4. Keep it covered in the fridge for the flavours to develop till serving 5. Serve it with patatas bravas, meats or seafood!

40 ml extra virgin olive oil 1 small Spanish onion 400g potatoes 4 eggs Salt and freshly grounded black pepper 1. Thinly slice the onions and potatoes. Heat 20 ml of extra virgin olive oil in a pan on medium heat and cook the onions and potatoes until soft 2. Whisk eggs in a bowl and season them well with salt and freshly grounded black pepper 3. Stir the cooked onions and potatoes with the eggs, mix everything carefully 4. In a clean pan, heat 20ml of olive oil, pour in the mixture and cook at a low heat. Once that side is done, turn it over or place it under a hot grill to finish the top.

Christmas| DECEMBER 2020

eep Trail h S y t i v i t a N d l e Henfi One of the shepherds wants to go and see baby Jesus but he has lost his sheep around the village. Can you help find them? The Henfield Sheep Trail has become a wonderful festive tradition in Henfield featuring the gorgeous woolly sheep knitted by Jean Whiting and her family. The sheep will be hiding in the windows of the participating shops and businesses up and down the High Street throughout the month of December. All you have to do is to write down the name of each sheep you find in the correct space of the Nativity Sheep Trail leaflet (see opposite). Parents and carers can help younger children with this activity. Once you have found all the sheep, add your contact details and post your completed form through the letterbox of The Free Church on the High Street by Friday 3 January 2021. The winner will be the first correct entry drawn out of a hat after this date, and will receive one of the sheep as a prize. Andrew Lawton 07564816789 henfieldefc@outlook.com

The First Christmas On 25 December we celebrate Christmas, the birthday of Jesus who was called Christ. Before Jesus was born, his parents, Mary and Joseph, went to a town called Bethlehem. It was very busy and they couldn’t find anywhere to stay. A friendly innkeeper let them stay in his stable with the animals. Jesus was born and Mary wrapped him in cloths and put him in the manger. A star appeared in the sky over the stable. Out in the fields, some shepherds were looking after their sheep when suddenly an angel appeared. The shepherds were very scared. The angel told the shepherds not to be scared because he had brought good news. He told them that Jesus had been born and that he would be the person who would save the world. He told the shepherds to go and see Jesus. Then there 2 | BN5 Magazine

were lots more angels who sang “Glory to God and peace on earth.” The shepherds went to see baby Jesus. They knelt down in front of the manger and were happy that they had found the one who had been sent by God. When they left, they told everybody they could find about Jesus and how he was going to save the world. Later on some wise men came from the East to see Jesus. They brought special gifts because they knew that Jesus was a king. They were surprised that he had been born in a stable and not a palace. They worshipped Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Each Christmas we celebrate Jesus being born. God gave us the gift of Jesus to show us that he loves us. Each Christmas we give each other gifts to show people that we love them. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

Guidance for EU27 citizens living in the UK As we get closer to Brexit at the end of the year – and at the time of writing, there is still no clear idea of its final shape - it is an unsettling time for EU citizens living in the UK. The government has published some helpful guidance – full details can be found at gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizensfamilies. So whether you employ EU27 citizens or you are an EU27 citizen yourself, this is very relevant. Overview of the EU Settlement Scheme

If you are an EU27 citizen and want to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021, you and your family will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. If your application is successful, you will be given either settled or pre-settled status. The EU Settlement Scheme allows you and your family members to continue to live, work and study in the UK. It means you continue to be eligible for: •

public services, such as healthcare and schools;

public funds and pensions; and

British citizenship, if you meet the requirements and want to apply.

Who should apply

If you are an EU27 citizen or a family member of an EU citizen you will need to apply if you want to stay in the UK after 30 June 2021; this includes if you are married to a British citizen. Even if you have a ‘UK permanent residence document’, you will still need to apply. If you are from outside the EU, then you must be in a relationship with an EU citizen as their spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner. You will need a residence card to prove your relationship, if you’re unmarried. You do not need to apply if: •

you are an Irish citizen; or

you have indefinite leave to enter the UK; or

you have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Note your family members from outside either the

UK or Ireland will still need to apply, even if you do not need to. When you can apply

If you have been in the UK for at least 5 years by 31 December, then settled status (leading to permanent residence/British citizenship) will be granted. If you have been in the UK for less than 5 years by 31 December, then you will be granted pre-settled status. Once you have clocked up 5 years, you can apply for settled status. Either way, you must apply for either settled or pre-settled status by 30 June 2021. There is no charge for making an application. If you are an employer, Brexit will provide many challenges on the employment front. It is important that you give staff the practical support they need. Know your starting position – analyse the size, location and profile of your workforce, identifying where your critical skills lie and also the vulnerabilities of you and your supply chain. Assess your exposure to extra costs - from immigration resource to extra paperwork and fees to support foreign nationals. One thing is certain, going forward the hiring and retention of staff will cost more in terms of both time and costs in the post-Brexit era. For further help and guidance, please contact Paul Samrah, Brexit Lead Partner at Moore Kingston Smith, on 01737 781546 or email: psamrah@mks.co.uk
