Editor’s Letter It’s that most wonderful time of the year! We love Christmas at BN5, especially when we see the High Street shops change their window displays from the beautiful poppy themed Remembrance tributes to their pretty, sparkly, gift-wrapped confections which sum up the excitement and anticipation of the festive season. As a child, I remember gazing through our village toyshop window and dreaming of what might be under the tree on Christmas morning, it was the highlight of that achingly exciting run-up to Christmas day. Henfield provides plenty of these magic ingredients for childhood Christmasses; the real reindeers in Stokes’s garden on the village Christmas Evening (see page 30) and the glittering fun of the Christmas Tree Festival. The wonderful Santa Sleigh deliveries on Christmas morning (the odd gift that falls off the big man’s sleigh on Christmas Eve that needs re-delivering by the BP Guild elves). If you’ve got young children this is such a lovely thing to arrange, in fact, it’s magical for all ages! Take a look at page 29 for details. This year let’s focus on the wonderful things we have here in Henfield - our strong community, beautiful countryside, welcoming clubs, groups and Churches, our friends and families. That’s the real magic of Christmas.

Richard Bates, Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on how products claiming to protect assets from care fees are sometimes too good to be true. Most people are responsible for the cost of their care if their assets exceed £23,250 (although the home may sometimes be disregarded). Due to worries about the cost of care, I’m often asked how to protect assets in order to leave a healthy inheritance. Often, clients want advice on locally advertised ‘wealth preservation trusts’ or ‘property protection trusts’. Marketed under a range of names, they typically cost £2,000-£8,000. Usually, the trusts are set up to hold the family home, claiming to reduce inheritance tax (‘IHT’) and protect assets from care fees. These arrangements are troubling though because, in my experience, they are often wholly inappropriate, especially now that the Ministry of Justice has scrapped the planned probate fee rise. It’s rarely a good idea to give your property away, even to a trust, as it can leave you without full control of the property and difficulty in arranging future finance. Most trusts I’ve seen were sold to save IHT, even when the client had no IHT problem. Broadly, spouses or civil partners can, between them, give up £650,000 tax-free, and a further £300,000 if their main residence passes to direct lineal descendants. In nearly all trust cases I’ve seen, these exemptions meant that no IHT was payable anyway. The other (misleading) selling point of these trusts is that they will ‘protect the home from care fees’. A ‘Deliberate Deprivation of Assets’ is where a person intentionally diminishes their wealth to accelerate contributions by a local authority towards the cost of care. Wherever possible, local authorities try to use such an argument to refuse to make payments. A local authority’s case is much easier to prove as a person ages, where there is a relevant diagnosis or if the scheme itself is advertised to ‘save care fees’! In addition, one can’t rely on an IHT planning argument if there isn’t an IHT problem in the first place. As a result, unwitting clients can pay thousands for an unsuitable scheme, provided by an unregulated company, often with insufficient insurance. As such, there is little recourse if things go wrong. There are a number of ways to limit care fees, including simply having the right type of will. Such wills cost a fraction of the price of these trusts and you won’t be parting with your home. Campaigners this week celebrated a rare win for a local community against a housing developer. The proposal to build 42 houses on a farmer’s field was rejected by the government’s inspector after a 4-day long public inquiry held in Horsham in August. The Sound of Music
Following the success of Henfield Theatre Company’s One Man, Two Guvnors, their next production is that timeless classic, The Sound of Music. Full of memorable songs and characters, the show is set in Austria in the run up to its annexation into Nazi Germany in 1938. During this turbulent time, Maria, a young postulant, is sent by the Mother Abbess as a governess to a large family, while she decides whether to become a nun. Maria loves the children and, in time, also falls in love with their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. Part of the universal fascination with this beautiful show comes from the true and very dramatic events on which it is based. It’s a story of the enduring power of love over evil, music over adversity and a family which is bonded by a wonderful, charismatic woman, Maria von Trapp, whose life has been an inspiration to many. The production is directed by Di Norman, with Dave Barnett as musical director and Ann Atkins as choreographer. The production is kindly sponsored by The Post House Cafe. The Sound of Music will be staged at The Henfield Hall from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 January 2020. Performances are at 7.30pm each evening with a Saturday matinee starting at 2.30pm. The Henfield Hall refurbishment project
As many of you will know The Henfield Hall is undergoing a three to four-year project to refurbish and update. The Hall which was built in 1953 by and for the community is a self-funded Village Hall. It relies entirely on income from letting to community users and fund-raising activities to enable it to survive. A few years ago, the 40-year-old roof was in need of repair and a new roof was installed. Unfor18 | BN5 Magazine
tunately, the new roof still leaks and over the past three years the Hall Executive Committee have been engaged in continued dialogue with the material suppliers and builders to rectify the problem. It has been a difficult time for the trustees, but we are pleased to say we are now close to a resolution and feel confident that in the next few months satisfactory action will be taken to resolve the ongoing issues. Thanks to a group of volunteers, particularly from The Henfield Theatre Company, with advice and help of Nigel Parsons Builders and other companies who have donated materials and services, we have been able to redecorate and update the foyer, Garden Room and other areas of the complex, but there is still much to do. Our next objective, once the roof problems have been rectified is to update and decorate the main Whittome Hall and stage area. This will involve updating electrical and other services, both on and off the stage as well as replacing ceilings and redecorating throughout. This will be a huge task for volunteers, but we hope to start in July/August 2020. We are always looking for volunteers to help particularly with skilled areas. We, like many Community organisations, need financial support. If you are able to help with this, it would be greatly appreciated by the trustees and the community of Henfield. As part of our counties 40th birthday celebrations, girls from Rainbows and Brownies in Henfield joined 500 other members of Girlguiding Sussex Central for a fun day out at Chessington. We went on lots of rides including Dragon’s Fury and the Vampire and enjoyed birthday cupcakes. Fortunately the rain stayed away and the girls all had an amazing time. The work of Sussex Wildlife Trust is supported by our many, fantastic business members. One of those, Gemini Print (who print BN5 magazine each month), was successful in their bid for an original mural at the trust’s charity auction held at the Wilderness Wonder Ball. The prize had been donated by international artist Jane Laurie, AKA Mutiny, who is “passionate about nature” and who uses her creations to raise awareness of endangered wildlife and conservation. Jane took her paints and brushes to Gemini Print’s Head Office in Shoreham-by-Sea, where she created a striking wildlife mural in the entrance stairway, where it is now much admired by visitors and staff.

Mega Christmas Quiz for St Catherine’s Hospice
As you may know, I have participated in and organised many charity challenges over the last 8 years or so and will be joining a team next April with my daughter Charlie and two friends, Bek and Georgina, to raise funds for one of our local hospices - St Catherine’s in Crawley Surrey, that looked after my dad (and us as a family) in his last few days. Like all hospices, they are reliant on fundraising to keep providing a very much needed service. The challenge is a 50km Sahara Trek over 2 days, which doesn’t sound a lot but with intense dry heat and sandy and off-road terrain we are not expecting this to be ‘a walk on the beach.’ We are hosting a Mega Christmas Quiz on Saturday 14 December at The Henfield Hall as we need to raise 80% of our target of £8,800 by January. Over 350,000 mobility scooters are in use in the UK and you see them everywhere as they are so useful for people who cannot walk far. Unfortunately, there have been many scooter accidents with some resulting in serious injuries and even deaths. Horsham Scooter Safety is run by volunteers who recently carried out 90-minute Safety Sessions from the excellent facilities at The Henfield Haven. The aim is to encourage existing mobility scooter and powered wheelchair drivers to be safer by recognising and dealing correctly with hazards, understanding the rules of scooter driving and knowing more about their scooters. She was apprehensive, but she quickly took to her new hairstyle after thinking about the impact her donation would have. Lisa gave 10-inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust, who make real wigs for young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their hair through cancer or other conditions. The charity also funds research into childhood cancers.

A new consultation has been launched on a proposed change to the concessionary travel support provided by West Sussex County St Barnabas House Hospice – Council. One Man, Two Guvnors
The following is an excerpt from a review of the October production, One Man, Two Guvnors, written by the regional representative of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), Mr Mark Hall, who saw the Thursday evening performance. Comedic plays are only as good as the actors on the stage and director Peter Ingledew must be delighted with his casting. His clever direction must be commended as, despite the intricate relationships between all the characters, there was never a moment’s confusion as to what was happening on stage. The scene changes were covered by a live skiffle band. Whether by accident or design, the speakers had a crackle to them which made it sound like a 1960s wireless and very authentic. The music was a nice touch, however, it felt a little protracted at times and, given the number of set changes, slowed the otherwise excellent pace of script. All on stage were exceptional, but it would be remiss not to appreciate the work by those unseen by the audience. The lighting was simple but effective, the costumes were of the right period and suited each character as did the properties and the set designs were wonderful. In the final song, with no individual mics, the cast were unable to suf-
ficiently project over the band to the back of the theatre. All other times, the lines and dialogue were delivered clearly and consciously. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable production which left me laughing all the way home. Mark Hall, NODA

Henfield Remembrance 2019
R
emembrance is very important to our village and each year local people come out to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Come rain or shine, the one thing that can be guaranteed is that Henfield people will gather together, with poppies on their coats and uniforms, to stand in silence for two minutes at the War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane. After a Service of Remembrance at St Peter’s Church on 10th November, the parade returned, led by Brighton and Hove City Brass Band. Clergy from all Henfield Churches contributed to a short service at the War Memorial. In glorious autumn sunshine the names of all soldiers listed on the war memorial were read aloud. Hymns were sung and the Last Post sounded. Children from Guiding and Scouting organisations, Henfield Youth Club and St Peter’s School represented their groups by laying poppy wreaths, which joined those from our local services; Fire, Police, HART responders and the Royal British Legion amongst others. It was very moving to see George Swalwell, who featured on the November 18 BN5 cover and celebrated his

100th birthday this year, stand up from his chair and with some assistance lay a wreath on behalf of The Merchant Navy Association. Heartfelt thanks from us all go to Henfield Parish Council who organise the event, with Kevin Wright and Claire Fullman working incredibly hard to make sure all the Henfield Remembrance events run smoothly. Dave Page from the Henfield Club was instrumental in organising the 38 marshals who volunteered to help close the roads and Barbara and Margaret at the Henfield Club made sure all veterans and visitors were given a glass of sherry or whisky. Mike Morgan, Henfield’s RBL Poppy Appeal coordinator was Parade Marshall and Digby Stephenson had the task of keeping perfect time. We would also like to mention Bob Reynolds. tep back in time at this years’ Henfield Christmas Evening which takes place on Friday 6 December from 4-9pm. The theme this year is the Charles Dicken’s classic novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ and many High Street shops and businesses will be staying open late offering festive fun and treats! We are very excited to announce that the Henfield Christmas Evening guest of honour is… Father Christmas! The great man himself has taken a break from his busy pre-Christmas schedule and will be popping into his Henfield Grotto, which once again is kindly hosted by the Henfield Youth Club. Whilst Father Christmas meets the good boys and girls of Henfield, the BP Guild will be guarding his sleigh outside the Henfield Club and his reindeer will be taking a well-earned break in the garden of Stokes (together with some owls!). There will be plenty of other activities to keep the children entertained on the night including: gingerbread decorating and bauble making

outside Relish; a traditional Victorian-style sawdust lucky-dip hosted by Atty & Smart; a bonfire brazier at Cloud 9 with roasted chestnuts from Sustainable Henfield 2030; and a fancy dress competition at Henfield Tea Rooms. The Free Church has once again organised the wonderful Nativity Sheep Trail around the village and will be hosting the Christmas Tree Festival, as well as a pop-up nativity photo booth. They will also be carol singing with the beavers, cubs and scouts from 5.30 to 6.30pm outside the church. There’s also carol singing outside Henfield Eyecare from 6.30 to 7.30pm, and the WI Wild Violets will be inside serving mince pies and mulled fruit cup, as well as hosting a ‘guess the name of the teddy bear’ competition. Marcus Grimes will be open to receive completed entries for their ‘word search’ and ‘spot the difference’ competitions published in this issue of BN5 Magazine (see pages 36 and 42). premises. For the smaller visitors there will be bed-time stories and a character hunt at Henfield Library and you can visit the Christmas Carol children’s art display at Gallery BN5. Al Badar Barbers will be serving refreshments; Alice’s Dog Groomers will be giving out treats for dogs and Prosecco for their owners; All Things Covered and Henfield Flooring will be providing sweets; our Big Issue seller Fritz has designed and donated gingerbread hearts which have been made by Truffles and will be available in Hair & Co, along with drinks and nibbles; Henfield Funeral Care will have mulled wine, mince pies as well as their memorial tree; Pretty’s Hair will have a Christmas jumper theme together with Christmas music, Prosecco, mince pies and chocolates; and there will be a pop-up Christmas shop in Stokes garage. Christmas shopping can be quite tiring but fortunately our fabulous café’s and fantastic pubs will be open during the evening offering an array of refreshments. Relish Café will have festive food stall outside and The George will be selling gingerbread and hot chocolate (with marshmallows for the children and Baileys for the grown-ups!) or mulled wine and there will be mulled wine at Antiques and Home. The Posthouse Café will be serving warming Christmas spiced lattes and luxury hot chocolates while the BP Guild will be selling their delicious burgers and hotdogs outside the Henfield Club. We are incredibly lucky to have such a vibrant High Street. Our High Street shops and businesses go to a lot of trouble to put on community events such as the magical Henfield Christmas Evening, so please do come along show your support and shop local this Christmas.

Lighting up Henfield with the Christmas Tree Festival
T
he Henfield Christmas Tree Festival is here again from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th December! This is the third year we have been running now and there are no signs of it slowing down! Last year we had over thirty trees from businesses and charities presented in the Free Church and its hall, and lots of small trees from children in the village. The atmosphere was truly warm and happy, Christmas music wafted through the air and even our carollers braved the cold to sing outside! We also provided hundreds of visitors with hot chocolate and biscuits. This year we are changing things a little bit. Instead of the children’s small tree competition, we are opening up the festival to families to enter, whether it’s your birth family, community family or friendship group. Families are invited to decorate a tree to tell us something about their family, show-off their hobbies or even show-off their favourite decorations, whether they are bought or homemade. We are including a pop-up photo booth, complete with costumes and props so every family or friendship group can take away a photo of

themselves as a part of the nativity scene. We are grateful to the Men’s Shed for help with the props for this! We are very excited about this and hope families will share their photos to our Facebook page (search for Henfield Free Church Xmas Tree Festival) so that everyone can enjoy them! We are also offering Christmas craft on the Saturday afternoon this year, following the carols sing-along in the afternoon, and don’t forget the Hand Bell Ringers on Saturday morning! On the Sunday morning, we will be presenting the ‘The Well Good Nativity’ play in the church followed by yummy morning tea and a special Christmas cake. This is a great opportunity to sing more carols, hear the nativity story and spend time over a cuppa enjoying good company. There is a lot to see and be a part of so come along and join in! Our Free Church family are very excited to be a part of the village Christmas festivities and we look forward to welcoming you on 6th, 7th and 8th of December. Festive fun at Rushfields late night shopping
R
ushfields Farm Shop in Poynings will be sprinkling the festive fairy dust over their late-night shopping evening on Friday 6 December from 4-8pm and it promises to be a fabulously Christmassy event. You will be able to ‘meet the makers’ who will be offering visitors festive food and drink tastings including: delicious wine from Poynings Grange and Plumpton College; a variety of gins from Pinkster Gin; panettone and an array of other real Italian goodies from Tenuta Marmorelle; and a range of tasty cheeses from Snowdonia Cheese Company. There will also be lots of different pop-up food stalls to visit, each with a different foodie theme including: the Wobblegate Cider bar; the Rushfields famous Pie Shop; Sausage and Bratwurst; Gourmet Hot Chocolate; and Loaded Fries. The evening is not just about food and drink – there will be hundreds of gifts, trees, lights and

decorations to browse and there will be lots of special offers in both the Garden Centre and Farm Shop. Rushfields are also organising a raffle in aid of St Peter’s and St James Hospice in Chailey with a range of fantastic prizes, all donated by themselves. A while ago a customer regaled us with a story about the wonderfully eccentric and alcohol fuelled experience of attending a foraging expedition with naturalist and leading fungi expert John Wright, River Cottage forager and author of The Natural History of the Countryside. Our pick for Christmas is this latest book, written in his inimitable style, full of fascinating information about the edible delights of our countryside, beautifully produced and fully illustrated. O
ne of the greatest concerns expressed by the volunteers who work with the Henfield Area Response Team (HART) is that of not being able to find the collapsed patient quickly enough. When the heart fails, the time window available for successful resuscitation is critical and every minute spent finding the patient is a minute subtracted from this critical time window. For this very reason, HART are launching a campaign to encourage everyone in the village to consider how easy it would be for an emergency responder to find them, or their house, in an emergency - particularly with the long nights and short days that we are going to experience over winter. Walking around the new housing developments by day it must be said that the majority of houses do have clear house numbers showing on their doors or porches. This cannot be said for some of the older parts of the village where it is not uncommon for houses to be named rather than numbered. Whilst names are quaint and add character, regrettably they are a thorn in the side of anyone who has to search for a particular house. Next time you are out and about why not challenge yourself to identify which houses would be easy to find if you had to deliver a parcel… repeat the exercise at night and you will perhaps see the problem faced by others. So what can be done? Illuminated house numbers or signs which are large enough to be seen clearly from the road need to be at least 15 cm (or 6 inches) in height. However they can not only be expensive but also require an electricity supply. While solar powered lights might seem to be the answer, these would not usually be powerful enough to last throughout a winter night, particularly when there is not a lot of sunshine during the day to charge them up. A simple alternative would be to use reflective numbers or letters. These are relatively cheap, are self-adhesive and can be affixed to doors, walls, gates, and fences. But again, choose somewhere which is visible from the road so that anyone driving around at night could find the number easily. If you keep a wheelie bin in your drive way or in front of your house, this could be an ideal place to put a reflective house number. We have asked Hamfeld’s in the High Street to stock these and they are also readily available to purchase online (search for ‘wheely bin numbers’).

So even if you collapse in the middle of a field, the emergency services can locate you with ease. ne of the greatest nightmares for a parent is when their child needs to visit a hospital. Sadly that happens to over 45,000 young people who are treated at Brighton’s Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (The Alex) every year. And wherever there is a show of hands around Sussex, you can be sure that a huge majority of the audience will be familiar with The Rockinghorse Children’s Charity. Whether grandparents, parents or youngsters, most of us have been touched by the support the charity offers during those stressful times. The Alex has been based for the last twelve years at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and the role of Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, as the official fundraising arm, is to make their experience a little less uncomfortable. Established just over 50 years ago by Dr Trevor Mann, the charity works closely with consultants and paediatricians to ensure the best equipment is provided to benefit the babies, children and teenagers who need them. In recent times this has included supporting the introduction of a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department and a new Sensory Garden. And yet for all their great work, which extends 72 | BN5 Magazine
to the baby unit in Haywards Heath and other hospitals around Sussex, the charity receives no Government funding. All income comes from donations, events, fundraisers, and for this article, lotteries. Henfield resident Trevor Watson used to run the lotteries for Brighton and Hove Albion. However, when the club decided it wanted to change direction, Trevor sought a new home for his fantastic team of fundraisers. “I felt for the lottery agents, many of whom had walked the streets selling Albion scratchcards and lottery tickets for over 30 years. The service they provided extended beyond the sale, as it involved going to regular customers, for whom they were often their only visitor each week. I realised that I couldn’t just walk away, though I would not blame a single agent for thinking differently.” Trevor made contact with the Rockinghorse CEO Ryan Heal, to gauge his interest. Ryan was very enthusiastic, so Trevor set up the society ‘Friends of Rockinghorse’. He just needed to convince the lottery agents to join the project. “I feared most choose to enjoy warm evenings indoors. However, it was incredibly humbling that all bar one wanted to support Rockinghorse, www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

and the one retiree, willingly handed over his customers to another agent. To be fair to the Albion, they agreed to a handover event at the Amex, which, together with Ryan’s enthusiasm, certainly helped overcome the previous disappointment.” Five years later and while a few agents may have retired, there is still a fantastic team treading the streets from Hailsham to Littlehampton, selling scratchcards and weekly lottery tickets to their equally committed regular customers. In November the total monies raised since inception passed £75,000. And over the years there have also been some surprising initiatives. As Trevor says, “While we have had people asking for scratchcards as wedding favours, the most successful idea was to sell packs of scratchcards in Christmas wrapping paper with a chocolate on top. Last year we sold over 400 packs of three or five card sets. People love them as stocking fillers or table presents. It is a bit of fun, also the chance to make a small donation to the charity, and a little reminder that even at Christmas children are in hospital.” Trevor and wife Julie (who has lived in the village for over 40 years and is the society’s treasurer), have their own heartwarming Rockinghorse story.

Their daughter started visiting the hospital from the age of two and was a regular over the next sixteen years. Julie takes up the story: “Kelly had a few problems and as every parent knows a visit to a hospital is an incredibly stressful and concerning experience. When we first went The Alex was based in Dyke Road, a horribly dated and unpleasant building. However, from walking in and seeing the actual rockinghorse, our spirits and more importantly those of Kelly, lifted every time. Throughout the years the support we were given by everyone was incredible.” Kelly is now grown up and fully recovered. But for Julie those memories linger: “We have experienced what many parents and young patients go through and perhaps not surprisingly Rockinghorse is our favourite charity.
