It’s Fayre Time! As this illustrious date in the Henfield diary only happens once every two years, we consider it to be pretty special. Organisation starts early - the first meetings of the committee Local interest (led by District and Parish Councillor Mike Morgan) Henfield Village Fayre & started last year, with representatives from the WI Show - 18 July (who run the Show Tent), the BP Guild (who are the muscles behind the tents going up and most importantly the beer tent) and the Lions (who Local interest kindly distribute the programmes and organise the dog show) getting together with their ideas. The Fulking Fayre from the BN5 area
This year we were pleased to receive several offers of help, preparing and on the day for marquee erection and help with the show tent, many from a Local interest The Henfield Memorial shout out that we put to our Facebook followers. he latest addition to Henfield High Street is a gorgeous little cafe - Café des Amis tucked away in the Post Office building. Serving up a scrumptious range of freshly cooked waffles and tasty bagels, as well as delicious coffee and decadent chocolates, owner Trish Baxter is bringing a welcome touch of the continental to Henfield!
The savoury side of the menu is equally exciting as Trish is stocking Bagelman bagels from Brighton. This local firm have been baking authentic plain, wholemeal and seeded bagels for nearly 20 years and they are fat free and contain no nasties. Trish and Becki merely fill them with a filling of your choice, and what a choice there is! There are all the classic fillings plus garlic bagels, bagel ploughman’s, toasted breakfast bagels and bagel melts. And if you have special dietary requirements, just ask: “We’re more than happy to make up salads for those who can’t eat wheat as we have all the ingredients in stock.” explained Trish. There’s a fantastic variety of drinks on offer: hot drinks include a range of delicious teas and coffees as well as hot chocolate and the cold drinks options include frappes, milkshakes, smoothies, iced teas and iced coffee. All of the menu options are available to take away and if you’re in a rush you can phone your order ahead. Before opening in May earlier this year Trish did a lot of research: “I wanted to make sure we were offering something different. And judging by how busy we’ve been since we opened, I think we’ve found our niche in the village - we’ve been rushed of our feet!”
Staffed by Trish and helped by Becki, there’s a wonderful welcoming atmosphere and a real buzz from being a part of the Post Office building. “I’m a very social person,” laughed Trish, “and I like to chat with the customers. We get a lovely range of people coming in, from young families to older people and teenagers after school. We’ve had a few cyclists drop-in on their way through the village because they like being able to leave their bikes securely in our garden.” The cakes at Café des Amis are freshly baked each morning and the rock cakes are a real customer favourite, although the Dorset apple cake comes a close second! But it is the Liège waffles that are creating a real stir: cooked to order in front of the customer and topped with a wide selection of delicious things, these waffles are a real indulgence. Whether you want to keep things simple with a classic lemon and sugar topping or you want to Café des Amis, Post Office, High Street, Henfield spoil yourself with the exquisitely named Chocolate Open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.00pm Heaven, there’s definitely something for everyone.

News | JULY 2015 ‘HENFIELD VILLAGE’ FINALISTS IN EVERYDAY HEROES NATIONAL AWARD! Henfield Village are finalists in a glittering National Awards event in the ‘Community Heroes’ category, organised by St John Ambulance. The village has been nominated by HART (Henfield Area Response Team) because the volunteers have been so overwhelmed by the local support sent their way – to the tune of £100,000 over the last 10 years! The event is hosted by Kirsty Gallagher and supported by the Daily Mail. Dave Fletcher from HART said; “We are absolutely thrilled to hear that Henfield Village are through to the finals! It is such an honour to get through the tough nomination stage of this National Award and the ceremony in July will be incredible. We are thrilled that our nomination has reached the finals – it’s a big ‘thank you’ to Henfield from us, without their support we could not continue to save lives in the village. We ARE a village of life-savers in Henfield and we’re very proud of that!” Henfield Village will be represented at the ceremony at the Lancaster Hotel in London on 1 July by Ray Osgood from Henfield Parish Council, Gyles Culver, landlord of the White Hart Pub and Emma Osman from BN5 magazine, as well as several of the HART responding team. And here’s
the nomination from HART that so impressed the judges and takes Henfield to the finals: “Village of Henfield Henfield is a village in the county of West Sussex with a population of around 6,000 people. Since 2004, the community has raised over £100,000 to fund their local community responder group. The money they have raised has had a huge impact on the local community. They have managed to pay for 23 public access defibrillators, which have already been used in 10 cardiac arrest incidents. Their fundraising efforts have also funded an active response system that has so far responded to 2,400 emergency 999 calls on behalf of the local ambulance service, reducing serious emergency call response times by an average of 10 minutes a call. If that wasn’t enough, they have funded an emergency kit for each responder, which includes an individual AED, plus an exhibition trailer and vehicle which provides ongoing education to local groups.” Good luck to the HART responders and well done Henfield Village! HENFIELD’S WONDERFUL RAILWAYS Henfield resident and railway fanatic Eddie Colgate has published a history of the railway in Henfield ‘Henfield’s wonderful railway’. From when the line was first opened in 1861 through to its closure in 1966 the book covers all aspects of the branchline and its effects on village life and it is packed with anecdotes, photographs and images. From the age of four trains fascinated Eddie and he was a regular traveller on the Henfield line from 1946 through to 1966. “There hasn’t been a book about the Henfield Railway before and so I decided to write one!” explained Eddie. “I wanted to write something that would have a broad appeal, not just any old book. People have been very generous in giving me reproductions of photographs and the National Archives at Kew and the Brighton Record Office have been extremely helpful.” Copies of Eddie’s book can be bought in Henfield at the Post Office and the Museum, as well as at Steyning Bookshop and the Bluebell Railway. HENFIELD HIGH STREET Work to upgrade existing signals equipment on Henfield High Street started on 22 June and we expect it to be completed within four weeks, depending on the weather. The work will include the installation of more energy efficient LED signal heads, the upgrade of underground signal cabling and ducting; and improved footway area, with refreshed tactile paving. BN5 BIRDS With summer here we can enjoy the sight of hirundines as they swoop over Henfield. As you may be aware, these lovely birds are not seen around the Parish as much as in years gone by. An article in the last edition of BN5 asked us to make a note of House Martins’ nests. We know that Swifts nest in the High Street and one of our members has a pair at the nest that we put up in her garden. Swallows appear to be coming back to their old haunts that are still standing– their old name was Barn Swallows because they nested in barns, buildings that have decreased over the years. In our new garden we have a wider vista of the sky and when I hear the hirundines I’m able to track them across the sky. Swallows and House Martins chatter as they swoop around catching insects and Swifts shriek as they cut through the air. I’ve also seen many other birds - a Red Kite slowly flapping it’s wings and soaring overhead

SMALL DOLE SUMMER SHOW The 71st Small Dole Summer Show is being held this year on Mackley’s Field, Small Dole, on Saturday, 15th August starting at 1.30pm. As well as hundreds of exhibits in the main marquee, there will be a Dog Show, loads of stalls, children’s rides, a fabulous tea tent and entertainment from the Patcham Silver Band. About me
Fitness has formed the foundation of my social, academic and working life for as long as I can remember. I started coaching fitness classes whilst studying at Southampton University and have now achieved well over 10,000 hours of successful personal training. I come from a sport crazy family who all live, sleep and breathe fitness! I workout pretty much daily and enjoy cycling, weight training and boxing as well as great healthy food and cooking. BARCLAYS BANK HART FUNDRAISER Kathryn Austin from Barclays Bank on Henfield High Street has raised a fabulous £170 for HART through a raffle that she organized in the branch. The bank will now match fund that amount, meaning that HART will receive £340 in total. Kathryn said: “A massive thank you to all who contributed prizes and bought tickets. Hart is an amazing charity and we at Barclays hope the money raised will help support them.” The two main prizes were won by Mrs Brocklesby (a helicopter trip) and Mrs Claxton (a trip to Heart Radio). The Village Hall Committee would like to thank EVERYONE who has helped us get this far, what an achievement! After the problems of the old hall and no funds to even start a a new hall, we now have a truly magnificent building with modern facilities that has captured the ‘character’ of Ashurst. On 1 July 1 Garden Club members can enjoy a coach visit to Ightham Mote in the morning and in the afternoon a visit to the Gardens at Knole Hill Farm in Maidstone, Kent. We plant to be represented at the Summer Show and Fair throughout the day, on Saturday 18 July. An exciting display is planned to reflect on the history of gardening during the 2nd World War. PUB QUIZZERS RAISE £2K FOR HART White Hart landlord Gyles Culver handed over a cheque for £2k to HART (Henfield Area Response Team), ongoing support from the popular quizzes held fortnightly at the pub. The Quizmaster is Gyles himself and regular teams pit their wits against his challenging questions. The quizzes have raised thousands for HART over the years; this latest donation accounts for less than a year of the events. HART responder Dave Fletcher said; “The White Hart Quiz Night provides a very generous and regular donation, very grateful for because they enable us to keep our service running. At Christmas time, there was standing room only at the White Hart Quiz, with tables in all three rooms filled with teams and Gyles running between tables with the questions! The support is incredible, and the winning teams always donate their prize money. Thank you to those teams who come each fortnight, every penny you donate keeps us responding.” Emma Osman
THE PAGANINI DUO IN CONCERT The Paganini Guitar and Violin Duo is to visit Henfield on Tuesday 7 July to give a concert in St Peter’s Church commencing at 7.30pm. Mark Jennings (guitar) and Andrew Wickens (violin) have both been trained internationally by outstanding performers of their instruments. They have played in many concerts in the United Kingdom and abroad, either in duo, as soloists and, in Andrew’s case, as a long-standing member of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Their programme will include a variety of attractive works by J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz, Mauro Guiliani, Joaquin Rodrigo and, naturally, Niccolo Paganini. This will be a rare opportunity to listen to fine performances on an unusual combination of instruments and is promoted by The Friends of St Peter’s Church. This year’s Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge, produced by The Reading Agency, in association with Guinness World Records, will launch in all libraries, including Henfield Library, on Saturday 11 July. Record Breakers will bring together the worlds of fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records featured in the Guinness World Records Books. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories. The scheme is free and flexible for all families – you just need to read six books by Saturday 12 September 2015. ST PETER’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, COWFOLD – POOL NEWS We have had quite a few exciting improvements to our outdoor pool at St Peter’s and it is looking better than ever. If you haven’t heard about the pool - it is a good size (15m by 8m) and it is heated, so makes an ideal afternoon out on a nice day in the school holidays for families in the Henfield / Cowfold area. There is a seating area with sun umbrellas and the pool is situated in a sheltered little spot in our school grounds – quite a little suntrap! Parents have a relaxing place to sit while our qualified lifeguard keeps an eye on all swimmers over 5 years old (pre-school children need a parent to swim with them). The pool is open from 2-4pm every weekday in the summer holidays and you get to it by driving down Potters Green (just off A272) and entering through the school gates. Children over 8 need not be accompanied by an adult. Last summer we raised £11,000 for a new liner and covers so the pool looks incredible at the moment. clean, soft rubber surface all around it, which feels lovely under-foot. We have also recently painted all the changing rooms and fencing so it looks great. You can also hire the whole pool for parties and events. This costs £25 plus the Lifeguard’s wages of £10hr. For those of you that love to walk down by the river Adur and soak up the glorious countryside, you will have been frustrated like myself and my wife that you cannot currently cross the bridge by Eatons Farm which takes you over to Ashurst. The bridge was shut back in December last year due to worries over its safety and it seems will remain shut for at least the remainder of 2015. West Sussex County Council remain committed to repairing or replacing the bridge, but this is not likely to happen for some time apparently. Annoying indeed! The Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) has been for the last 10 years an organisation that has enhanced our village life in a number of ways. It has been instrumental in getting the skate park established for youngsters in the village, for setting up a minibus service for older members of the village and for erecting the wonderful signposts and maps that we see around the village. The Henfield Hub is an offshoot of the HCP and more recently the HCP secured the transfer of the Henfield Day Centre from West Sussex County Council as a community asset for the village. The HCP has been chaired for the last 10 years by Dr Tony Jackson, who will be stepping down from the role in September. Under Tony’s sterling leadership the HCP has been a driving force in delivering projects that have benefitted the community and I know that he will be continuing to work on a number of ongoing ventures in the village. I would like to add my thanks to Tony for all of his efforts over recent years and for continuing to work towards improving village life for all of us. You will hopefully all now be aware that the Henfield Summer Show will take place on Henfield Common on Saturday 18th July. A record number of applications for stalls have already been received and the usual fun fair will be in attendance. Schools in the country now teach CPR as part of the curriculum and members of the public are encouraged to perform CPR in an emergency. This has led to a massive increase in survival rates. Professor Chamberlain praised the work of HART and the difference their lifesaving skills have made to the village. He has supported the group since they started in Henfield over 10 years ago. Prof. Lippert stressed the importance of ‘doing something’ in an emergency cardiac arrest situation, because those who receive chest compressions early on will have their chances of survival doubled. The attendance of first responders and the use of defibrillation is even more effective. Dave Fletcher, paramedic and HART representative, said; “It’s an incredible honour to have two such important guests and we’re pleased to have our fellow first responders from PART (Partridge Green Area Response Team) and SECAMB representatives here too.”
HART (Henfield Area Response Team) hosted a lunch on 19 June in the White Hart, attended by very special guests Freddy Lippert who is CEO of Emergency Medical Services for Copenhagen, along with HART supporter Professor Douglass Chamberlain, CBE who is an honorary consultant cardiologist at The Royal Sussex County Hospital and founded the first paramedic unit in Europe. As you may have heard, this will be my last term as Head Teacher of our village primary school. Since I informed the school’s Governing Body of my decision at the start of the year they have been busy working with the Diocese and West Sussex County Council representatives towards the appointment of my successor. Unfortunately, following a lengthy interview process in April, the decision was taken not to appoint from the candidates interviewed and interim arrangements have now been put in place for next term. Mrs Laura Roberts, the schools Deputy Head Teacher will be acting as Head until a permanent appointment is made later in the school year. While it is never an easy option not to appoint, Governors are always committed to making the ‘right’ appointment for St Peter’s and I know that Mrs Roberts, as an able and committed colleague will continue to lead the school as Governors and the community would wish until the matter is resolved in the near future. The caller states that he/she is calling to alert the householder that the computer is being hacked and to switch it on immediately. DO NOT DO THIS! If you receive such a call, tell the caller that before you will proceed you need their BT identification number and full name, so that you can check with BT before you take any action. At this point, the caller will probably cut the call. HENFIELD U15’S CHAMPIONS AGAIN Henfield U15’s have replicated their achievement of last season by being crowned champions of the HDYFL ‘C’ Division. An incredible season has seen them win 16 out of 16 games in the league and score a superb 84 goals while conceding just 10. The team also won the Hangleton Tournament last month taking their number of tournament wins to 12.
MINIBUS FOR STEYNING AIR CADETS Early last month the Cadets, Staff, and Committee of 1140 (Steyning) Squadron Air Training Corps were thrilled as they saw almost two years of hard work organising fundraising events (which included sponsored swims, car washing days, and tea, coffee and cake sales), come to fruition with the purchase of a Squadron Minibus. This will be a real asset to the Squadron enabling them to travel to events without the need to hire one, and will also give flexibility in planning training and taking part in short notice activities. It’s showtime!

he countdown has begun to the biggest and best ever Henfield Village Fayre which is being held on Saturday 18 July on the Henfield Common from 1-5pm. And this year the Parish Council who organise the Fayre have really pulled out all the stops. In addition to the usual Fayre favourites there will also be the fantastically funny Sheep Show!
A regular on the summer county show circuit, the Sheep Show gives a well-informed and entertaining lecture on the humble sheep and their ‘ewe-iqueness”! Filled with sheepy facts and jokes for all ages, the show explains why we farm them and how successful they have been throughout the years in a light-hearted manner. With nine different breeds on show, as well as a sheep sheering demonstration and dancing sheep (yes, you read that right, dancing sheep!) the Sheep Show is sure to be a big hit with all ages. For those of you still deliberating on what to submit to the Show Tent, time is running out. You can pick up a programme from the Parish Office or download one from our website bn5magazine. co.uk just make sure you return your completed forms to the Parish Office by 12 noon on Friday 10 July. On the day of the show, all exhibits must be delivered to the Show Tent between 7.30am and 10.30am. Our wonderful Woodmancote and Henfield WI ladies do an absolutely amazing job in organising the Show Tent. It’s a huge task and one which takes an incredible amount of time, so please don’t embarrass them by asking them to accept late entries! Shaylers Funfair will be bringing their selection

of fairground and traditional rides from whiteknuckle thrillers to children’s roundabouts, as well as traditional stalls, galleries, games, popcorn, candyfloss and toffee apples. There will be a fun dog show and plenty of clubs and charities stalls to browse including the Henfield Joggers, Chanctonbury Morris Men, the Worthing Beekeepers Association, Henfield Tennis Club, the Royal British Legion, the U3A, Henfield Football Club, the Trefoild Guild, Henfield Garden Club and Henfield Community Partnership. In addition to the Show Tent, Woodmancote and Henfield WI will also be running the tea tent serving cups of tea and coffee as well as refreshing cold drinks and delicious cakes and biscuits. For those who prefer their refreshment a little stronger there will be the beer tent of course! BN5 Magazine have produced the Henfield Summer Fayre programme and along with fayre sponsors Coles Automotive, Rushfields Plant Centre, Perry Plumbers, Henfield Fencing, H J Burt Estate Agents and PHB Contractors we are proud to be involved with this fantastic summer event. The fabulous Fulking Fair!

reparations for the award-winning Fulking Fair held on Downside Meadow are well under way. If you’ve never visited before, then clear you diary for the afternoon of Sunday 26 July – you won’t be disappointed! “We do try to keep a country feel to the fair” said organizer Bob Rowland and Fulking Fair certainly boasts all the usual attractions including a dog show, country crafts, children’s games, coconut shy, stocks, model steam engines and tractors. There will also be sheep and alpacas on display, ferret racing, a tombola and puppet show. There will be a vast array of refreshments from ice creams, crepes, teas and homemade cakes to BBQ, pizza and of course a bar which will be supplied by the wonderful Shepherd & Dog pub. Sold as Seen, Dave Gee, Mel Tong, The Burgess Hill Bonfire Society Drummers, Pyecombe Village Choir and the Sussex University Ukulele Band will be included in the live musical entertainment during the afternoon. But what makes the Fulking Fair stand out is its

fabulous community spirit. Organised by the Fulking Social Committee, all the proceeds from the Fair are ploughed back into village community projects. Recently they have spent money on restoring the children’s playground in the North Town Field and they are about to fund some work to repair the village hall roof. Described by the Brighton Evening Argus as “one of the best fairs in the county”, the 2014 Fulking Fair won the Evening Argus Community Event of the Year award last year – a well deserved accolade. “We were absolutely delighted and so excited to receive the award,” admitted Bob. “It does build tremendous community spirit and lots of people get involved in helping out. I certainly get an enormous amount of fun out of organising it.” The Fulking Fair will be held on Downside Meadow on Sunday 26 July from noon until 5pm. There will be free parking and entry is only £1 (children under 13 go free).

FUNDING SECURED FOR HENFIELD MEMORIAL FIELD
A
fter many years of hard work and perseverance, Henfield Parish Council, Henfield Football Club and Henfield Cricket club are delighted to announce that they have secured £65,000 funding from Sport England towards the cost of renovating the Memorial Field on Henfield Common. The Henfield Memorial Field was first created in 1950 in memory of the youth of Henfield who died serving their country in the Second World War. At the time it was a huge project to clear the gorse and level and drain the ground and the result was two state of the art football pitches. However the pitches have been deteriorating over the years and despite the best efforts of the council to maintain them, they are prone to flooding during the football season. The project to drain, level and resurface the field will cost £116,665 of which £65,000 will be funded by Sport England. Horsham District Council and a community partnership comprising Henfield Parish Council and the Henfield Cricket and Football Clubs will fund the remainder. All the partners involved agreed that huge thanks must

go to Vas Sintonas of the Lighting and Open Spaces Committee of Henfield Parish Council for his incredible efforts in bringing the project to fruition. Not only was Vas instrumental in getting the funding application correct and accepted at the first entry, but also in pitching the idea to HPC and getting everyone to agree to contribute financially. Eddie Colgate, also from the Lighting and Open Spaces Committee was also involved with the project. Eddie played football for the village from a schoolboy right through to the veterans team and he shared his memories of the Memorial Field with us: “I remember when the first pitches were finished. covered boggy area with rabbit holes to the most wonderfully smooth playing surface. It was wonderful for us children, we were thrilled to have somewhere that we could pass the ball properly!” He went on to add: “It is wonderful that we can reinstate these pitches for their proper, original reason – in memory of all those men who gave their lives during the Second World War. We are still remembering them. This is what it’s all about – for the future of the village. I have to raise my hat to the two village clubs who have put their time, energy and money behind this project.” Jonny Ruiz who is an Under 12’s Centre Mid player for Henfield Football Club is one of the young local players who will benefit from the renovated pitches. He said: “I think it’s brilliant that we are going to get two really good pitches to play on. I’m really looking forward to using them when they are done and playing other teams in our league on the new Henfield pitches. And it’s great that the pitches can be made good for the memory of the soldiers who died.” Simon Andrews, Chairman of Henfield Football Club said: “The grant from Sport England has given us a once in a lifetime opportunity to invest in sport in what is a growing village. Over one third of the village are connected with HFC in one way or another – either as a player, parent, coach or supporter. Our teams and membership are ever

-growing and we’re proud to have teams from U6 through to U18, as well as Ladies, three senior teams and a veteran’s team.” Conway Thorns of Henfield Crick Club added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for both the Cricket and Football club and for the youth of the village in general.” The project is fantastic example of what can be achieved when local groups work together. The Memorial Field is not just used by the Football Club and the Cricket Club: it is a beautiful and much loved part of Henfield which is used for walks, picnics, adventures, parties and dog-walking by many in the village, young and old. Everyone who uses this valuable community space will benefit from the renovation work. Ray Osgood, Chairman of Henfield Parish Council, said: “With such a large grant available we felt that this was the time to make an investment in the Memorial Pitches. It’s a large investment by all involved and it has meant a lot of cooperation between the organisations. There is some way to go before work commences, we need to get quotes from specialist companies and make sure we time it not to interrupt the football and cricket seasons too much. If you have between £14,250 and £23,250 in assets the council will subsidise your care costs according to a sliding scale. If you have above £23,250 you will have to fund all of your own social care. Now the Government has announced that it will

aking an acquisition can speed up the growth and expansion of a business by enabling it to enter into new markets and broaden its customer base and product range, whilst reducing the risks of dependency and gaining critical mass. If the acquisition is integrated correctly, it can not only enhance earnings but also make the business more valuable, provided there is a well-planned strategy and funding package in place. You need to ensure that the target company will be a good strategic fit with your existing business. Post completion the new acquisition should contribute to the value of the business as a whole, with minimal duplication of existing trade or administration. There needs to be a detailed plan and experienced team in place to ensure that integration is as smooth as possible and is not detrimental to your existing business. Taking these factors into account, you need to ensure that the price represents value for money.
