It’s that time of year again! As we go to print, we’re knee deep in the organisation of the Henfield Christmas Shopping evening, taking place on Friday 11th December. Carol Eastwood and members of the Community Partnership as well as Pamela Chaston of the Parish Magazine and lots of the High Street shops are also working to make this a brilliant night for the whole village. There will be stalls, street food, entertainment and even the big fella in the red coat himself - so please come out and support the evening. We’ll be there with our gazebo and we’ll have a Big BN5 raffle - with really fantastic prizes donated by local businesses. All the money raised will go to Henfield Youth Club. If you want to get involved please see page 29 and contact Carol, who’d love to hear from you. What is Christmas without a few wintery walks to a local pub? We’ve used lots of local pubs as the start and finish point for some lovely walks - some require more energy than others, some are flat and some are hilly. The one thing in common is that you can enjoy a drink or a pub lunch at the end of them all! There are six different tried and tested pub walks on page 46, we hope you enjoy them. You may notice BN5 is slightly heavier than usual - many thanks to our advertisers who have supported this extra size and extra editorial for the Christmas issue, we hope you enjoy it.

LLOYDS PHARMACY HENFIELD: FIT FOR PURPOSE? The following letter is from local resident Richard Searles (Senior) is one of several communications we’ve had at BN5 magazine regarding the service provided by Lloyds Pharmacy in Henfield: “It is very likely that you are a user of the Lloyds Pharmacy in Henfield High Street. If you are there is a likelihood that you will have a view on the question of whether the service provided represents “best practice”. You may also be aware that the Henfield Medical Practice has received many concerns regarding the level of service provided by Lloyds Pharmacy and on three occasions now have tried to obtain a Pharmacy Licence to open another Pharmacy here in Henfield. To avoid confusion, because I am sure that you know there is a dispensing facility in the Health Centre, I would point out that the national Rules only allow patients to use it if they are resident more than one mile (as the crow flies) away from their nearest Chemist. I am sufficiently dissatisfied with the service I get from Lloyds that I have started a campaign to try to get something done about it. I have already contacted about twenty people I know, who have told me that they do not consider Lloyds to be ”fit for purpose”. I have promises from them to put their thought in an e-mail to me to be un-attributed, if used in my campaign. I am sending the text to three addresses: The Health

Centre, Nick Herbert MP’s office and Lloyds themselves. This mail is an attempt to add to my body of knowledge regarding the feelings of the people of Henfield on this matter. I ask you to let me know please. Finally I want to make it clear that in my view the staff in the subject Chemist are hard working, always ready to help, and their customer manner is good. The problem is that a premises that was in use as a chemist thirty years ago, has had an increase in load of approximately fifteen and a half times, being executed by about the same number of staff. I lay no blame at the door of the staff in Henfield. This is a miserable failure by senior Lloyds Management to make sure they can deliver, by moving to somewhere larger, a long time ago. Another 232 dwellings are going to increase the load by about 10%. What state will we be in then if Lloyds do not do something radical.” Richard Searles Sr. A Lloyds Pharmacy spokesperson said: “We take customer feedback very seriously and regret any inconvenience or frustrations experienced over recent months. We have taken on board the feedback and are making changes to improve the service and experience in pharmacy. These changes include recruiting additional colleagues to support the demand for pharmacy services, a review of our prescription dispensing process and in the New Year customers will benefit from a completely refitted pharmacy with enhanced services and a wider selection of products. We hope these changes will see a significant difference in our customer’s experience with us.” We posted this correspondence on our BN5 Facebook page at the beginning of November and it generated a lot of interest, with over 2,500 hits and 35 comments, including the following: “Very rarely have a problem. Usually it’s a ten to fifteen minute wait, which is just enough time to pop into Budgens or wherever. Maybe this is excessive, I really don’t know. I would be interested to know how this compares to other pharmacies. The staff are all helpful, polite and friendly... which is more than I can say for one or two of the customers I’ve seen. However, if there were to be a win-win situation for staff and customers then it should be explored.” Other comments are more critical: “It’s getting worse. They need bigger premises and a few more people who can dispense. BN5 MAGAZINE NOW IN AUDIO FORMAT We are delighted that BN5 Magazine is now available as an ‘audio magazine’ in CD format from Henfield Library. The audio magazine is organised by the fantastic 4Sight group who support people with visual impairments. 4Sight meet on the last Thursday of every month at the Henfield Haven from 10am to 2pm. I’ve been photographing the village (streets, houses, churches, pubs, etc) for the greater part of 20 years, and the ‘Henfield then and now’ website (www.henfieldthenandnow.net) combines my own photos with older ones lent to me by Alan Barwick, both in a personal capacity and in his capacity as Curator of the Henfield Museum. The website was started about 10 years ago and I’ve recently revamped it to its current look. I’ve also taken 12 photos of the village for use as modern postcards. There are no modern postcards of Henfield to buy other then these and they are on sale in Southdown Galleries in the High Street. The venture is in collaboration with Rita at the shop and all profits from the sale of the cards go towards the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Mike Ainscough
HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS I am pleased to announce that two local residents have been co-opted to fill the vacancies on Henfield Parish Council. Best wishes to Ann Donoghue and Gary Pettifer as they take up their posts in Council. A big thank you to all the people that helped bring together Henfield’s Remembrance Parade again this year and to all the villagers that came out in large numbers to support the event in slightly inclement weather. It was particularly pleasing to see so many younger people in the church and at the War Memorial. Henfield Parish Council will be embarking on its three-year tree survey in the early part of 2016. This is to identify those trees that require maintenance work to ensure that our footpaths and fields remain safe places for us all to walk. The High Street Christmas lights will be going up on Tuesday 1 December and will remain in place until Wednesday 6 January. The Christmas Evening will be taking place in the High Street on Friday 11 December. Please do come along and

THANK YOU HMC AND LLOYDS A big thank you to the staff of Henfield Medical Centre and Lloyds Pharmacy, for treating me so promptly on Friday October 30th, thereby enabling me to drive off on holiday as planned that morning, not much later than intended. They have a great many people to look after and there can sometimes be delays in getting appointments and picking up prescriptions. By 11.30am I had been seen at the medical centre and picked up a prescription for antibiotics to cure an eye infection I had woken up with that morning. There were no ‘over-the-counter’ treatments that would do, so it was essential to get a prescription that morning, so I could go away. Hilary Green

WILDLIFE WINNER A timeless, midwinter scene in the heart of Sussex scooped Emma Varley from Pulborough first place in this year’s Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Photo Competition. Emma’s picture won the public vote and a £100 cash prize. Runner-up, by a whisker, was Glenn Alford from Cavalier Way, East Grinstead and his charming capture of a wood mouse in a hazel tree. The twelve finalists will feature in the Sussex Wildlife Trust 2016 online calendar, which will be available from www.sussexwildlife trust.org. uk at the end of December. Amanda Reeves

We are now in the final stages of preparing the Draft Neighbourhood Plan for Consultation within the parish. One thing we all agree upon is that Shermanbury Parish is a good place to live and needs to be preserved. The question that has occupied our minds, as we have worked through the Neighbourhood Planning process, is how can we protect what we all value and build for the future within a District where there is a huge and increasing demand for housing. Change is not alien to the Parish, over the period 2001-2011, 37 new dwellings were built, an increase which has strengthened the parish, as historically did the development of Woodside Close which started in the 1920s. A Neighbourhood Plan, introduced by the coalition government in the Localism Act of 2011, provides parishes with the ability to create a plan of statutory status which stands alongside the District Plan and the National Policy Framework when determining planning decisions for the life time of each plan, in our case until 2031. Cold reality reveals the parish is not fully protected by its predominantly rural status as evidenced by

DECEMBER 2015 | News recent planning decisions made by Government inspectors and therefore positive planning is a better way forward than trusting to luck and a still unapproved District Plan. What is proposed within the plan provides for a rate of growth in housing lower than between 2001 and 2011, a few affordable houses for those with a close connection to Shermanbury and for the provision of parish green space which will allow future generations to decide what facilities the parish requires. The creation of the Wineham and Shermanbury Plan (WASP) has taken a great deal of effort by a small team of local residents and expert advisors from DowsettMayhew planning. It has been created through multiple consultation iterations and cannot become planning policy unless passed by a simple majority at referendum. This is a real exercise in democracy for all those who participate with open minds, a sense of reality and an eye to the future. Dawn Langston

Verdi’s Requiem is always a very special piece of music and demands the highest standards of performance. It has been described as “an opera in ecclesiastical garb” because it is intensely moving and dramatic. Not only does it need a very large orchestra and four superb soloists, it also needs a double choir – this multi layering needs skill and many hours of practice. The Chanctonbury and the Hurstpierpoint College Choral Society and Orchestra are joining forces on Sunday 6 December to present this iconic piece in the splendid Chapel in Hurstpierpoint College. For this concert the conductor will be Neil Matthews, Director of Music at Hurst. The leader of the orchestra will be Charlotte Scott and it will include many professionals from London orchestras. This year there will be a concert by Patcham Silver Band and a Christmas Extravaganza in aid of local charity Know Dementia. For the first time Henfield Library will be launching an eleven day children’s ‘character hunt’ around the library from the start of Living Advent, concluding with a prize draw on the evening of 11 December. The Chanctonbury Morris Men will also be taking part and there will
LIVING ADVENT 2015 Building on the success of last year’s Living Advent, Henfield is once more filled with excitement and anticipation as it approaches the celebrations this year. From 1-24 December there will be a programme of events taking place in different venues throughout the village, with children and local groups and organisations taking part. THE RISE & FALL OF LITTLE VOICE
COMMUNITY TO THE RESCUE Who would have thought that when West Sussex County Council decided it could no longer fund the Henfield Day Centre that so many people could have come together to rebuild and refurbish the building to give it yet another life? In recent weeks it has been completely refurbished. Building works, plumbing and electrics have been done by professionals but, in between, other members of the community have given their time freely and worked on replanting the gardens and decorating the interior. Henfield Theatre Company Workshop have applied their skills and shown that not only can they provide realistic scenes for the stage but have turned their hands to some wonderful paintwork for the interior of the Haven. This task has taken some weeks to complete with all the workshop team giving as much spare time as they have been able to manage. A huge thank-you to all the volunteers for their hard work. HENFIELD MEDICAL CENTRE Every Christmas the staff at Henfield Medical Centre donate to a worthwhile cause and this year we are concentrating our efforts on raising funds for St Barnabas House Hospice. In the last couple of years we have lost colleagues to terminal illness and St B’s were involved in their care as they are with many of our patients, making what is a very difficult time a little bit more bearable. rowds filled Henfield High Street to watch the parade as it returned from St Peter’s Church on Sunday 8 November. The procession, led by Brighton and Hove City Brass Band, included servicemen and exservicemen, Scouting and Guiding organisations, the Clergy from Henfield’s churches, representatives of the Emergency Services and HART responders, representatives of the Parish,

County and District councils and many other local groups. The Royal British Legion Standard led the parade to the War Memorial at Cagefoot Lane where the names of the fallen were read. A two-minute silence preceded a short service with hymns and the laying of wreaths. Once again, Henfield stood proudly to remember our fallen. Emma Osman

ne of the shepherds wants to go and see baby Jesus, but has lost his sheep around the village! Can you help him find them? The lost sheep are hiding in different shops in the village. Collect a trail leaflet from the library to find out which shops the shepherd visited. Write down the name of each sheep you find on the form. We also want you to see if you can guess the name of the Shepherd who lost all the sheep. There will be a small prize for everyone who correctly names all the sheep and guesses the name of the shepherd who lost them!
The First Christmas On 25 December we celebrate Christmas, the birthday of Jesus who was called Christ. Before Jesus was born, his parents, Mary and Joseph, went to a town called Bethlehem. It was very busy and they couldn’t find anywhere to stay. A friendly innkeeper let them sleep in his stable with the animals. Jesus was born, and Mary wrapped him in cloths and put him in the manger. A star appeared in the sky over the stable. Out in the fields, some shepherds were looking after their sheep when suddenly an angel appeared. The shepherds were very scared. The angel told the shepherds not to be scared because he had brought good news. He told them that Jesus had been born and that he would be the person who would save the world. He told the shepherds to go and see Jesus. Then there were lots more angels who sang glory to God and peace on earth. The shepherds went to see the baby Jesus. Making Henfield sparkle this Christmas!

hat makes you feel Christmassy? Is it the smell of chestnuts roasting, or the magical sound of carols being sung by lantern-light? Is it the aroma of mulled wine and mince pie spices, or a glimpse of that special man with the red coat carrying a bulging sack of presents? You can enjoy all this and more in Henfield High Street this Christmas, with an evening of shopping, music, food, entertainment and festive treats. Put a date in your diary for Friday 11 December, when the High Street will be alive and the shops open until 8pm for the late night shopping evening. Younger visitors can join in the fun of the ‘Sheep Trail’ and help to reunite the shepherd with all his lost knitted sheep, which are hidden in the shop windows. There will be a funfair and if you’ve been good ALL year, rumour has it that Father Christmas is planning to take a break in his busy North Pole schedule to visit his Henfield grotto. You’ll be able to give him your Christmas stocking list and he might just have a surprise for you! The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
ollowing their other recent successes, the Henfield Theatre Company (HTC) will be presenting the Glyn Robbins play version of the C.S. Lewis classic ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ as their New Year production. The play is a wonderful piece of writing which is sure to appeal to all age groups. The storyline is faithful to the original but focuses on the most exciting and memorable parts of the Lewis masterpiece. The original story was published in 1950. It follows the adventures of four ordinary English children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, who find their way into the magical land of Narnia by way of a wardrobe that they find in an old house. The children find a strange world of incredible characters such as fauns, talking animals and other, far more sinister, creatures. But Narnia has been cursed by the White Witch, making it a land of perpetual winter with no Christmas. The audience will be taken with the children on an enchanting adventure from a lamp post in the snow to the splendid castle of Cair Paravel as they try to free Narnia from its terrible curse. Lewis dedicated his book to his goddaughter, Lucy Barfield. The dedication reads;

As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be... Your Affectionate Godfather, C.S. Lewis” The play is directed by Kevin Locke who has been a very active member of HTC since 1979. The last Henfield production that he directed was the highly successful Pompeii Panto. Performances will take place from Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 January, at The Henfield Hall, starting at 7.45pm each day and a matinee, at 2.30pm on the Saturday. Tickets will be available from the Box Office at Stevens Estate Agents from 1 December priced £10 and £12 (Children/ Senior Citizens £8 and £10). The production is sponsored by Miss Potts Pottery. Tea with the Vicar
ith a huge grin and an equally big handshake, Rvd. Paul welcomes me to the Vicarage at St Peter’s for a chat over a cup of tea. It’s been eighteen months since he came to St Peter’s, newly married to Jan, a conveyancing assistant who he met when they were running their church Youth Group together. I’m interested to find out where he’s come from and his plans for St Peter’s and the Henfield community. Revd. Paul’s baptism into the Church of England followed a familiar pattern. He attended a local Sunday school in West Tarring from the age of five, became a chorister at nine and confirmed at 12 years old. He describes his mum as ‘churchy with a small c’ and it was his confirmation group (which went on to become a church youth group) that struck a chord with Paul. When Paul was 18 the youth group leaders left and he took over. Bible study gave him a chance to explore ideas, morals and the ‘big’ questions. Even at that stage of his life, with the normal challenges of a teenager leaving home and stepping outside 4 2 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
the comfort of his family, he had a strong sense that God was guiding him. Choir fell by the wayside (after all, practice was on a Friday night and the pub seemed much more fun) but still, that nagging sense of purpose stuck with him. By the age of 23 he had a steady job at the NatWest Bank, followed by a promotion to audit manager at HSBC. Life settled into a pattern. Still, that little voice remained. His Vicar at St Andrew’s Church in Tarring became a mentor to Paul and on Maundy Thursday 2003 (he remembers the exact moment) he experienced his epiphany. A voice clearly spoke to him; “I don’t compromise.” And so the journey began in earnest, he resigned his position at the bank and attended Ripon College, Cuddeston (just outside Oxford). After a two-year course he gained a post as Curate at St. John’s in Hove. During this time he faced many challenges in his life, but his faith stayed strong and the love of the Church helped him through. Some of you will remember Revd Christine Wilson

DECEMBER 2015 | Local interest who was curate at St Peter’s in Henfield. In 2001 she left the village to minister at St John’s. Paul took over from her as vicar at St. John’s in 2008 when she went to another parish. St John’s is a city church, the large building has been split into two, one side occupied as a community centre and the other is the church. In a way, Paul had a ready-made congregation on the door-step; his pastoral duties included helping the youth groups, immigrant groups, homeless drop-ins and elderly support groups who used the centre. St John’s is at the heart of the community and he had the privileged position of being able to minister and help those who were vulnerable, the homeless and the addicted, as well as his core congregation. Henfield may be a far cry from an inner city church, but there are very many similarities. People have the same needs, vulnerabilities and life changes, Paul’s background and experiences gives him an empathy and an understanding that enables him to reach out during times of crisis as well as times of celebration. He explains his approach as ‘informal formality’ – he loves the tradition of the Church and sees St. Peter’s as a place for prayerfulness and contemplation, as well as being inclusive and welcoming. He loves the rhythm of the Church and understands that congregations can sometimes be reluctant to change. Church is a place of continuity, often turned to in times of crisis – and yet it needs to change to meet our changing world, even in Henfield! The basic requirements of belonging, love, acceptance, whatever your background, age, nationality or need are the cornerstones of his faith and ones which Paul believes will help our community through challenges. He fosters the links between the Church and St Peter’s School, which is privileged to be the only school serving the village. As such it’s an inclusive school but one with distinctly Christian values. When I ask if he sees the school as a ready made congregation of younger people he laughs; “The best evangelism is through relationships. We are here for the whole village, welcoming and inclusive, and it’s our job to make sure people find the Church when they need us through all stages of life. St Peter’s and the school are intrinsically linked, one of my favourite services is when the whole school attend church, which they do four times a year. We remove all the chairs to make room for 390 kids, all sat cross-legged on the floor. The energy and joy is intense and I am reminded of how important these two places are for each other.” People’s lives are complicated. Paul’s theory is that Church needs to be simple and work for the people. Are Sundays always the best days to worship? Are there other ways, or other venues that people can come together? The need for tradition is strong, the space for spirituality and peace must

remain, but it’s not the only way to worship and St. Peter’s is a big, beautiful and bright space to be utilised for everyone in the community. “The sense of welcome that Jan and I have received from the village is quite incredible. Walking down the high street and seeing familiar faces; the sense of community at Remembrance when it seems that most of Henfield has come out to remember the fallen; these are all moments when I feel lucky to be the vicar at St. Peter’s. Winter walks
S
ometimes in the depths of winter itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to motivate yourself to go out and explore: afternoons snuggled-up on the sofa in front of the fire with a classic movie and some Christmas chocolates can seem so much more appealing! But even in damp and dull weather there is plenty to experience in our fantastic countryside: dramatic skies, wildlife galore and just the pleasure of being outside in the fresh air. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a brilliant way to get away from the stresses of the festive season. And what better way to end a walk than with a well deserved drink or two at one of our lovely local pubs? The following are a selection of our favourite local pub walks. We have tried to choose walks of differing lengths and for differing abilities. Winter in rural West Sussex is inevitably very wet and many of the paths get very wet and muddy, so wellington boots or walking boots are highly recommended! We have tested all of the walks and whilst we have provided a description, we do recommend that (with the exception of the Downs Link walks) you take the relevant Ordinance Survey map with you. Keeping right, head for the path between trees to the left of a big oak tree and at post 45 keep straight on. Carry on ahead through an open area past post 10. At the end turn left following the footpath past a house and then turn right onto a bridleway. Continue past posts 15 and 4 16, through a tall gate next to a cattle grid and pass over a stream. Turn left onto the bridleway 2 through woods and at a T-junction, follow it to the right through a tall wooden gate. Continue past posts 27 and 28 and at post 29 is the Knepp Wildland ‘tree platform’ which gives a great view of the marsh. Whitehall Cottages

3 With Lower Barn on your left continue on 3] and turn left on to a footpath at post 30. Turn right and cross a small bridge and carry straight on at post 39 and through gate 38. The path turns left and right and then passes through gate 37 where you follow it towards the houses in front of you. Go through a gate and turn left onto Countryman Lane by Whitehall Cottage to reach the Countryman Inn, the halfway point of the walk. Retrace your steps to Whitehall Cottage and turn

left onto a footpath through a field and straight on into woods and across a wooden footbridge. Follow the path on the left edge of a field then go over three stiles before immediately turning right onto a footpath. Follow this and as you arrive near a house, follow the footpath to the right through a metal gate across a field and through another gate with a house on your right. 4 Go straight ahead onto the road towards [4] King’s Windmill and Shipley passing in front of Church Farm North entrance. At Kingland, stay on the road and pass in front of Hall Cottage. At the T-junction turn right into a dead end, follow the SHIPLEY sign to St Mary’s church (open every day). Pass around the right of the church and turn 5 right down steps to follow the footpath. Go across a field with the river on your right and across a wooden gate and bridge. Go up and straight on between wooden barns with Church South House on your right. The path takes you to the gated entrance 1 of the farm before reaching a road. Turn left here.

Starting in Dial Post, this lovely walk (approximately 6.3 miles) features fantastic wildlife as well as the historic village of Shipley.

Follow the concrete path between Hammer Barn and Hammer Farm and go through a gate towards and over a river flowing from Hammer Pond. Follow the footpath sign on your right and at post 23 take the footpath on your left down and up through gate 24 at New Barn Farm. Go straight on through the farm buildings and through a wooden gate. Turn sharp left and over a Brook House stile into a field, keeping the hedge on your left. 1 You cross another stile, POYNINGS then a drive and then another three stiles after 4 which you cross a small footbridge and then yet Perching Manor another stile. Keep to Farm FULKING the left here with the horseboxes on your right. Follow signs across 2 1 the field to another stile Shepherd at a woodland edge. & Dog DEVIL’S DYKE BRIGHTON 1 When you reach a bridge across a lovely Devils Dyke pub stream cross it and turn immediately right, following the sign. Skirt This walk starts and finishes at the National round the field keeping the stream on your right Trust car park at Devils Dyke (£2 charge or free until you eventually go over another stile in the for members) where, on a fine day, you have corner. fantastic views across to the North Downs. 3
1 Facing the Weald, turn left through a wooden [1] gate onto a well defined path running along the top of the Downs, passing a broken brick building on your left. Carry on this path for about 800m where you meet a five-fingered signpost. Take the bridleway half right gently descending to a metal gate overlooking the village of Fulking and the escarpment. Go through the gate and follow the right-hand path going steeply down the hill. Halfway down at a chalky crossing of paths, go straight on passing the wayside post and then twist down the path to the far side of the village. Towards the bottom the path divides. Keep right, down some steps and over a stile. After 200m note the back garden of the Shepherd and Dog Public House but carry on another 100m to a path where you turn left to reach the front of the pub. 2 After refreshment, turn right along the road through Fulking. After 200m note a memorial to John Ruskin set in a wall on the left-hand side of the road, then turn immediately left at the start of a footpath that heads north. A gate leads you into a small park area. Go ahead and through another gate in the right-hand corner. Follow the footpath half right across a field and then follow 4 8 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
3 On reaching the lane turn right for about 150m, then left over a stile with a footpath sign. Go ahead to the far left-hand corner and over the stile. Keep on through this field and on reaching another stile, bear slightly left and down through a small copse on a well defined path. Keep the stream and a pond on your right until you meet a water treatment plant. Here turn right over a stile and across the field towards a gap between two detached houses at the edge of Poynings village, through a gate and onto the road. 4 At the road turn left and after 150m turn right off onto a footpath that passes through several properties. This then opens up into a wide surfaced path and trundles uphill into a wooded area. At a T-junction keep left and climb steadily up the path, ignoring a sign halfway up to go right. You exit the wood through a gate and carry on ahead keeping to the main path. Go through a final gate and ahead with the beautiful steep valley on your left. Eventually you will spy the roof of the Dyke Hotel between two coppices at the brow of the hill. You have arrived back to the start and deserve a drink! John Willis

Shermanbury circular OS Explorer OL11 Brighton & Hove map
This is a lovely circular walk (approximately 5.5 miles) through some gloriously peaceful countryside. 1 This walk starts at the public car park just 1) south of The Bull Inn on the A281. The Bull is a wonderful family (and dog!) friendly pub with a real traditional feel and cosy open fires. Cross the road and follow the pavement north over Mock Bridge. Just after the bridge turn right through the wrought iron gates on the tree lined bridleway towards the beautiful 12th century church of St Giles. 2) 2 After the church the bridleway gets very muddy, but stay on it, forking right into the woods after you cross a small stream. Continue until you reach a lane where you turn right and follow it until you reach a brick House. Go through a gate and turn left, passing Waterperry House and the Old Rectory on your right. 3) 3 Here the walk continues along a beautiful oak-lined lane until you reach the fabulously named Pooks Farm. Keeping the farm on your left, head straight on through the small gate into the woods. Continue on before turning right onto a sign-posted grassy footpath bordered with brambles. There are several paths off to the left, but wait for the third that is signposted.COWFOLD At the next crossing of footpaths, continue straight on, over a wooden stile and into a field. Keeping to the left of the field head straight on towards a white house. The path curves around the house and through three metal kissing gates until you end up on the far side of the house.
the wood on your right, continue until you reach a stile on your right that takes you into a wood and over a small wooden bridge. Follow the path left through a large wooden gate and past a barn conversion, turning left and through another gate onto a lane. Turn right and follow this lane until you reach Fryland Lane. 5) 5 Turning right, continue along Fryland Lane until you find a footpath signposted on your left that takes you across a field towards a wooden bridge. Cross this bridge and then turn left and head towards the metal footbridge that crosses the slow moving river Adur. Once over the bridge turn right and the follow the meandering river west. 6 At the next footbridge (with solar panels), 6) the path turns left away from the river and you follow this until you reach Shiprods Farm. Here turn left and through a metal gate and follow the path across more fields and two final small gates as you head back towards the road and The Bull Inn and a well earned drink! The last section along the river Adur is prone to flooding in very wet weather, in which case continue along Fryland Lane until you reach the Brick House and retrace your steps back via St Giles Church. Downs Link walks
OS Explorer OL11 Brighton & Hove map. Allow 2 to 2 ½ hours.
The Downs Link is a fantastic place to walk at anytime of year, but particularly during the wet winter months. The West Sussex Countryside Rangers do a great job of maintaining the bridleway and is pretty much flat, making it suitable for off-road pushchairs and younger children and no map is required! Henfield to Partridge Green return There are many walks that start from the Cat & Canary pub in Henfield but one of our favourites is the A272 up the Downs Link to Stan’s Bike Shack and back which is an easy 3.7 miles or so. In the autumn the hedgerows are full WEST of blackberries and GRINSTEAD sloes, great fun for foraging and it gives young children a fun purpose to the walk.
Again, there are many walks which start from the Partridge pub in Partridge Green, but this one is a manageable 4.5 miles (approximately) north to West Grinstead Old Station and back on a flat bridleway.

This section is a lot more open and you can see fields and woods on either side of the bridleway, as well of plenty of paths leading off. Again there is plenty of birdlife to be seen, including pheasants and even buzzards. The bridleway HENFIELD passes over the B2135 and then further on nearer your destination, under the A272.

On leaving the field you go through another gate and the bridleway is once again well screened by hedges and trees and there is plenty of birdlife. When you reach two large partially blocking the way, the bridleway leaves the old railway track temporarily and turns sharp right onto a stony track that leads to the Ashurst Road. Partridge Green to West Grinstead Old Station return
Starting outside The Partridge pub, the first few yards are on the road, heading north 1 towards West Grinstead. You will soon see a footpath on the left-hand side of the road, heading west. Follow this for a few yards until you reach the Downs Link bridleway that crosses in front of you. Turn right, past the metal barrier and head north.

Starting from the Downs Link car park outside the pub head north down a short steep section and then the bridleway levels out and it is flat for the rest of the walk. This section is well screened on both sides by trees and hedges, but when you reach Betley Bridge, you go through a gate and the bridleway crosses an open field. Here you can see the river to your left and an old second world war pillbox which was one of two built to defend the bridge from German bomber planes.
Bike Shack on your left, perfect for re-fuelling with coffee and cake. On the return journey you can enjoy a different view, particularly towards Chanctonbury Ring as you cross the field before Betley Bridge.
West Grinstead Old Station retains the old platforms and station houses, together with an old signal that was salvaged when the railway line was closed (children love playing with the signal lever!). The railway yard is now a car park and picnic site and there is also an information centre housed in an old railway carriage, which is open on some Sundays. The return walk takes you back to Partridge Green and the Partridge Pub. Sarah Butler

This is where you leave the firm bridleway and it can get a little boggy in parts, depending on the weather. Follow the river here (you will catch a glimpse of Streatham Manor to your left, a historic Henfield building which was once the principal manor and courthouse in Henfield until the 16th Century. The existing house is privately owned).
Henfield to Small Dole return You can use the Cat and Canary Pub as your base again and park in the Downslink Car Park adjacent. Walking South you can reach The Fox in Small Dole, a very busy local pub which serves great traditional pub food. This journey takes you along the Downs Link which is firm underfoot until you reach the river, where you take a footpath past Streatham Manor. This can get boggy underfoot (due to the river flooding at times of the year) so please make sure you’re wearing suitable footwear and bear in mind you may end up a little muddy!

Walking south from the pub go along Station Road and turn right into Hollands Lane. The Downs Link footpath is clearly marked, a left hand turning just after The Old Mill and Braziers Garage. Horses, dog walkers and cyclists use this bridleway frequently so please be courteous of other users and make sure your dog is on a lead near livestock or when horses approach.
Follow the river for a short distance when you’ll see a footpath to your left, which will join with a lane and you’ll see the road access to Streatham Manor on your left. Follow this hard lane straight ahead, walking past New Hall Farm on your right. Just after the farm, take a right hand fork towards the houses and you will be on New Hall Lane. Follow New Hall Lane to the end and you will meet up with the A2037, Small Dole Road. Turn Woods Mill right here.

Gift Aid T
he Gift Aid scheme enables charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) to increase the value of monetary gifts from UK taxpayers by claiming back the basic-rate tax paid by the donor. It can increase the value of donations by a quarter at no extra cost to the donor. Gift Aid is already worth £1bn a year to charities and their donors. Charities claim back the tax (25%) already paid by UK taxpayers on any donation they make to the charity. There are no limits to the size of donation on which the tax reclaim can be made. So a donation of £1 is currently worth £1.25 to the charity. To qualify for Gift Aid the donation must be from an individual who pays Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in the UK to at least the value of the reclaim being made. Donations from companies, community groups, parishes, sports clubs, etc, do not count for Gift Aid for these purposes. The donation must be made to a body registered with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as a charity. The charity needs to obtain and retain a valid declaration from the donor. The gift/donation must be in cash, not goods or services, and there must be no expectation of a return from the gift, although charities are allowed to give small tokens of thanks and appreciation. And what’s in it for the donor? Well, apart from the act of charitable giving itself, the donor benefits by claiming back the difference between the higherrate tax and basic-rate tax on the gross donation. For example, if a 40% taxpayer donated £100, the gross donation would be £125 and they would claim back 20% on £125, which equals £25. The net cost to the donor would therefore be just £75. Taxpayers subject to the 45% tax rate will benefit even more.
So how can Gift Aid be used to improve the results of fundraising? Sponsored events - Perhaps the most obvious way to generate Gift Aid income is on sponsored events. Donations from sponsors are eligible for Gift Aid for most types of sponsored event (e.g. fun runs, silences, instrumental events, pancake tossing, etc). For certain types of challenge events where there is a cost and benefit to the participant, such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or a parachute jump, different rules apply and further advice 7 6 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
should be sought. You should design the sponsorship form carefully so that it also acts as your Gift Aid declaration, avoiding the need for extra paperwork. You will need the full name and address of the sponsor and a tick-box that affirms a declaration that the sponsor is a UK taxpayer and has paid sufficient tax to cover the donation. It should also state the amount donated. The treasurer or administrator then needs to create an audit trail showing that the amounts paid into the charity’s bank account in relation to the sponsored event tie up with the amounts on the forms, so that you can stand up to any HMRC inspection. Claims can be made online using the Charities Online Service run by HMRC at any time and the repayment is usually received within 14 days. Travelling expenses - Foregone expenses, such as mileage incurred by club/charity volunteers, can be claimed and then gifted back to the club/charity under Gift Aid. The volunteers must however actually be paid for the expenses and then pay them back as a donation. Volunteers include unpaid coaches, committee members, trustees, etc. For example, a charity whose volunteers clock up 4,000 miles between them in the course of a year could claim 45p per mile. This equates to £1,800 and if that were then all gifted back to the charity, the Gift Aid repayment to the charity would total 25% of £1,800, which equals £450 for essentially no cost whatsoever! Reduced membership subscriptions - By setting the junior subscriptions at a lower level and asking for the difference to be made as a voluntary donation, significant additional monies can be raised. For example, revise a current subscription £30 per annum to £5 with a voluntary donation of £25. So if there are 100 junior members, Gift Aid monies raised will total 25% x 100 x £25.00 = £625.00. The donation must however be voluntary, so there is a risk that the members will only pay £5 rather than £30. Auctions - A payment to your charity will only qualify for Gift Aid if it is a voluntary donation. Where an individual successfully bids for goods or services at a charity auction, their payment for the item is not a donation and therefore not strictly

a gift to charity. However, HMRC recognises that sometimes payments made for goods and services auctioned for charity will intentionally be more than their retail value. In these circumstances, HMRC will treat payments as donations which will qualify for Gift Aid, provided that the other rules of the scheme are met and the benefits don’t exceed certain limits. Gift Aid tax relief can be claimed on auction purchases for commercially available items (e.g. a haircut) if they are sold for more than the commercial price and the commercial price is made clear, before the auction, to bidders by the promoters, for example in the auction catalogue. Provided the rules are met, then Gift Aid can be claimed on the full amount paid if the value of the goods falls within the de-minimis rules - otherwise it can be claimed on the amount paid above the retail price of the goods/services. The bad news, and commonly misunderstood, is that if the item is not commercially available, (e.g. a signed football shirt), then Gift Aid cannot be claimed at all. Note that the purchase of raffle tickets is not eligible for tax relief under the Gift Aid scheme as a benefit is being purchased.
