On the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees, 10 representatives from Henfield travelled to a swanky hotel in London’s Hyde Park to attend a glittering awards night, hosted by Kirsty Gallagher from Sky Sports. The reason? Our nomination for being a village of lifesavers, due to our unwavering support of HART, our local responder team. Excitement rose as the nominees for each category were announced. To the complete surprise of us all, Henfield won the category of Community Hero. I was incredibly proud to be there, to celebrate HART’s lifesaving successes (of which there are many) and to hear what others in the country think of us, Henfield. It seems they think we’re pretty amazing - having raised over £100,000 for our responder team and having the highest number of Public Access Defibrillators per head in the entire country. The event, run by St John Ambulance and supported by the Mail on Sunday, was a really exciting one - but now the responders have changed out of their black ties and ballgowns and are back, in their high-vis jackets, responding to 999 calls in the area when you need them. They would love to be able to offer 24/7 cover, but they need more volunteers. Please help if you can. So, a HUGE congratulations to Henfield residents for supporting HART, because they couldn’t do it without you. And a big, big thank you to those responders who give up their time to save lives and help those in distress.

News | AUGUST 2015 SMALL DOLE 70TH SUMMER SHOW The 70th Small Dole Summer Show will take place on 15 August at 1.30pm in Mackley’s Sports Field. As well as hundreds of exhibits in the main marquee, there will be a dog show, loads of stalls, children’s rides, a fabulous tea tent and entertainment from the Patcham Silver Band. Schedules for the show are available from the Small Dole Village Stores, The Fox PH, Small Dole, Swains Farm Shop, Rushfields Plant Centre, Hamfelds, Jasmines, Stokes and the Henfield Post Office. Entries are welcome from everyone and there is a very strong children’s section, so why not have a go! David Barrett
HART RESPONDING UPDATE The second quarter of 2015 has proved to be another busy period for HART. Responders attended 48 emergency calls to people in Henfield and the surrounding villages. These comprised: • 20 Category Red 1 calls to people with life threatening conditions where speed of response might be critical in saving life, for example; heart attack, trauma or serious bleeding; • 11 Category Red 2 calls which are serious but not the most life threatening conditions;

SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB You may remember that this magazine was kind enough to publish a page about us last September, which explained what we do, and encouraged you to join us. Well since then ‘The Henfield Short Mat Bowls Club’, to name it correctly, has had a very good and thriving year. Several new members joined us – some as a direct result of this magazine – and our Friday morning games have been well attended and very enjoyable. We played quite a few matches against other neighbouring clubs during the winter, and although we didn’t win them all they were very sociable occasions; always ending up with tea of course. At the end of June we had our last game of the season, followed by a celebratory buffet lunch. Everyone came to chat and to applaud the competition winners. Our Captain, John Williams, always seems to be the highest scorer, even though we all try to beat him: but this year the singles title went to Jill Flower – so that shows what an evenly mixed up lot we are. From September till June we play in the Village Hall every Friday morning. Do come to see what it is all about. Play starts at 10am – just come in and watch for as long as you like. We might even give you a coffee! If you like the look of us we would love you to join us. Come and give it a try. Derek Rogers

There was an incident in the village at the Wantley Estate on 21 June where a white van containing a terrier and two men was seen. The men goaded the dog to attack cats and one was killed, with more than one other injured. The crime number is CAD 1573. We reported the incident to our readers via our Facebook page and asked for witnesses to contact Sussex Police. Sussex Police have said that the incident has been handed to the RSPCA. We have received the following update from the RSPCA: “The RSPCA is very concerned to hear these very upsetting reports and is looking into the incident. We cannot comment or give details about investigations while they are ongoing. We urge anyone with any information about this incident, or indeed any other incident, to call us on 0300 123 8018.”

HENFIELD FC VS. LUDWIGSHAFEN: FOOTBALL EXCHANGE WEEKEND
ISLE OF WIGHT FUN On the 18 May, Year 6 went on a five day trip to the Isle of Wight. It was extremely fun and exciting, especially the activities! These consisted of lots of different things from team games to trapeze! We were assigned cabins of 6 -8 children and were also given activity groups for the week. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and they were very tasty! We all had a fabulous time and enjoyed our experiences, apart from a bit of homesickness, everything was fine! The weekend of June 26-28 saw players past and present of Henfield Football Club play host to a group of teachers from Ludwigshafen in Germany. These visits have been going on for twenty years now with the Germans coming here six or seven times and us going out to them three times. The friendship between Henfield and Ludwigshafen started over 40 years ago when a Water Board employee Steve Robotham met a German student Jochen Schroeder carrying out field studies on the River Adur.
SUMMER SEASON LEISURE ROUTE The Adur Valley Line Bus Route 3, affectionately known as ‘Steyning Flyer will be making a welcome return this summer, operating a twohourly service between Shoreham and Horsham via Bramber, Steyning, Henfield, Partridge Green and Southwater. The low floor, wheelchair friendly buses will be selling and accepting Discovery tickets and accepting valid, concessionary passes. On the 22 and 23 August you can use the service to visit the Shoreham air show without the worry of driving and parking. When Jochen started teaching in Ludwigshafen some of the teachers would travel abroad to play football each year and so came to Henfield and keep coming back! They arrived on the Friday night and were treated to fish and chips in the Don Scutt room of The Henfield Club and then enjoyed watching Germany ladies team beating France in the Women’s world cup.

AUGUST 2015 | News On the Saturday morning we played football on the Astroturf pitch at Steyning Grammar School. Henfield were leading 2-1 at half time when we realised that they had 10 players and Henfield had 11! With the sides evened up for the second half, Ludwigshafen won 4-2. We then drove to Shoreham airport for lunch followed by a drive along the coast to Birling Gap and Beachy Head stopping off at the Amex Stadium and Devil’s Dyke on the way back to Henfield. The trip was rounded off with a very nice dinner in The George Hotel before our guests left early on the Sunday morning. A very enjoyable weekend with a very friendly group and promises made for us to go out to Ludwigshafen next year. Eric Holder

HENFIELD CC BEAT WHITE HART IN CHARITY MATCH Friday 19 June saw the annual White Hart XI v Henfield CC fixture. The game wasn’t quite as close as last year whereby the pub triumphed, but the cricket was still thoroughly entertaining and was superbly supported by the local community. Henfield CC posted a total of 145 and the pub team unfortunately fell 20 runs short. The pub side was made up of many regular customers and a few members of staff. The evening was a fantastic fundraising event for Henfield CC who are refurbishing their nets and training facilities. Will Culver, White Hart

The snow on Ben Nevis was immense, about 10 times more than is normal at this time – we could have skied at one point! Then after six hours of driving through the night, Scafell Pike was a wet, cold, windy place to be at 4:30am – probably the time we all had to grit our teeth and stick to it. However Snowdon, reached after a mere five hours more driving, was ‘shorts weather’ (mostly!). Although the top was shrouded in cloud there was plenty of sunshine around the rest of the way up (and down!)
3 PEAKS SUCCESSES! On the evening of Sunday 21June two teams from Henfield Joggers (bolstered by HART stalwarts and veterans of Three Peaks 2014!) started up Ben Nevis in Scotland. Less than 22 hours later both teams topped Snowdon to complete the Three Peaks Challenge organised by the Firefighters Charity, who benefited from the entry fees. However the local charity supported by the two teams is Know Dementia, on whose behalf the teams are continuing to raise money. It turned out to be a true challenge, with the organisers saying we experienced the worst weather conditions in June that they had had in 22
Both teams finished in a silver medal position (sub22 hours) for which we dosed ourselves liberally with the Dark Star beers that we had carried the whole way. The worst thing (apart from Scafell of course), was trying to sleep in a crowded, smelly, bumpy minibus. The best thing was Ben Nevis - for all the snow, it was great. The whole experience was fantastic and special thanks to Mark and Mandy Skilton for playing a massive role in organising this for the second year in a row! LONDON COACH TRIPS It was with much regret that the July trip had to be cancelled due to insufficient numbers to fill the coach. As these trips run as a non-profit making service, for the benefit of the local community they do rely heavily on passengers committing as much as they possibly can to repeat trips. This service, run by a band of very dedicated organisers, has been running for about twenty years and everyone in the village and surrounding villages are welcome to join our happy band. The next trip is Thursday 26 November. If you have not already bought your ticket, they can be purchased from Gill on 07713161343. The coach will leave from the Post Office Bus Stop at 8.45am prompt. Meanwhile we have formed a new organisation - the Henfield Social Enterprise Community Interest Company – that is now in the advanced stages of negotiation with West Sussex County Council over the contract to lease the current Day Care Centre for a 25year period. It is expected that this will be signed within the next month or so. Subject to this, and a massive amount of fundraising and refurbishment work that will be required, we hope to have the Henfield Haven operational by the end of this year. PASTOR ROB RETIRES The Rev. Rob Harris came to Henfield with his wife Susan in August 2003 to take on the role of Pastor at the Free Church. They quickly involved themselves with many activities, both in the church and in the wider village life. After twelve years of faithful service, Rob is retiring this month. As a church we are so very grateful for his leadership and guidance during this time. As they move to East Devon we pray for rest, health, happiness and God’s blessing on them in their retirement. They will be greatly missed by the church congregation and by many others in the village. Along with a number of their friends, we shall be saying good-bye to them at our morning and evening services on Sunday 16 August. Ron Stanford, Henfield Free Church
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS As I sit and write this report the sun is shining in Henfield and everyone seems to be walking around the village with smiles on their faces. It’s great to see what a bit of sunshine can do to improve everyone’s mood. I also note that the new hanging baskets and tubs supplied by Neil Johnson at Stonepit Nursery are beginning to flourish and brighten up our High Street. Thank you Neil for the wonderful flowers and for maintaining and
watering them so magnificently throughout the summer! Whilst on the theme of ‘thank yous’ I would also like to thank Emma Osman and her team at the BN5 Magazine for once again producing the Henfield Summer Show programme free of charge and for organising the advertising that is vital in paying for the show. In addition, thanks to Mike Morgan (our District and Parish Councillor) who has Chaired the Committee that has organised the show and to Parish Secretary Hazel Grant, who has sent numerous letters, emails and invoices as the show has been gradually pulled together. Thank you all! And finally, did you know that Henfield is allegedly the third largest place in Sussex without its own railway station? The station closed in 1966 as part of the closures prompted by the report ‘The Reshaping of British Railways’ by Dr Richard Beeching, the then chairman of British Rail. Whilst there is nothing of the station remaining, the road names Upper Station Road, Lower Station Road and Station Road do remain. Ironically the homes that were built on the site of the station are on a street called Beechings! Henfield Station was used in the Second World War as the loading point for locally grown sugar beet to be transported North to London, and Betley Bridge where the line crossed the River Adur about a mile to the North was a strategic target for German bombers. Recipe for Elderberry Syrup: Put 2 pounds (1kg) of elderberries in a large pot with 1 litre of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the elderberries are tender and soft. Pass through a fine sieve, or muslin then discard the skins. Pour the juice back into the pot, add 500g of sugar and simmer for 15 minutes, until the syrup has thickened. Add a squeeze of lemon juice, then leave to cool. Pour the juice into a bottle and store in the refrigerator. Take a teaspoon daily, or up to three per day if you feel a cold coming on. Andrea May

HEDGEROW BOUNTY FROM THE ABUNDANT ELDERFLOWER On the Downs Link path this warm evening, the starry white flower heads of the Elderflower bush Sambucus nigra (L) are still fresh enough to pick for elderflower cordial. This high summer drink full of floral sweetness has been concocted since Roman times, now we can pour it on ice cream, meringues, mix with cocktails – or just dilute for a thirst quencher. Never mind if you haven’t picked the flowers this year, collect some pretty bottles, and prepare to revisit the Elder bush for its second harvest - our very own English super berry. The elderberry has been valued for centuries for its strengthening effect on the immune system, and particularly as a remedy for colds and flu – plus children like its taste! Starts to look out for the berries ripening in August, and when they hang off the bush blackly purple, snap off whole heads. Get them back to the kitchen and strip berries off stalks with a fork. Protect hands and clothes from the purple juice
Losing a loved one is a traumatic experience. There are lots of things that need to be done, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them, including informing what can feel like a never ending list of government departments and local authority services. That’s why West Sussex County Council, in partnership with District and Borough Councils in West Sussex, is introducing the ‘Tell Us Once’ service in July. ‘Tell Us Once’ is a Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) service which is offered during death registration appointments. It’s a free service, which notifies several government and council agencies of the death. These include: The DWP; HM Revenue and Customs; Identity and Passport Services; Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA); and Council services, such as Adults’ Services, Blue Badge, Children’s Services, Council Tax, Electoral Services. At registration, the Registrar will add the details of the deceased to the Tell Us Once national database. You will then be given a unique reference number which will enable you to activate ‘Tell Us Once’ with a visit to the website or a single call, should you wish to take up this service. FISHERS FARM PARK CELEBRATES 25 YEARS! Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green recently celebrated their 25th Year, transformed from a fruit-picking farm in 1990 to the awardwinning family attraction it is today! Fishers began in June 1990 with around 6,000 people coming through its doors. It has grown enormously in the last 25 years and now welcomes around 178,000 visitors a year. Hosted at the award-winning attraction itself, more than 200 guests arrived for the celebrations. Invitations were sent to those who had contributed to the success of Fishers over the years. Local suppliers, friends, neighbours, staff old and new and families who camped at the farm when it was a campsite back in the ‘90’s - all came along for the event. The whole team has been overwhelmed by the number of cards and congratulations they have received and wanted to say a big thank you to all who have supported and visited Fishers over the years. SGS INAUGURAL BRILLIANT BOOK AWARDS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS On Friday 26 June the first ever Brilliant Book Awards ceremony was held at Steyning Grammar School. This event was organised by our Literacy Leader and school Librarians, in association with the Steyning Book Shop. Students, staff, parents, carers and members of the local community were invited to the celebration to honour both readers and books, and to have a chance to listen to and meet some visiting authors. The presenter of the evening was a Year 9 student, Leo Ghorishi who expertly hosted the event. Amy Curran (Year 8) interviewed the author Matt Whyman. Oliver Gillo (Year 9) read his own review of one of the nominated books ‘Split Second’. Year 7 students Melissa Shaw and Ocean-Lee Parker read out a poem they had written together, and Year 6 students Joe Best, Freya McIvor and Isaac Dalziel read out their reviews of the Thirteen Storey Tree House. Contributions were also made by Aimee Collis, Millie Finney and Assistant Head Natasha Nicol. The overall winning book choice of the evening was Virgina Bergin for her book ‘The Rain’. After being announced as the winner she said: “I just wanted to say thank you so much to you and everyone at Steyning for choosing ‘The Rain’ as winner in the Year 9-11 category of the SGS Brilliant Book Awards! I’m a new author and it’s the first thing I’ve ever won . . . and . . . I can’t stop smiling about it! On Saturday 20 June Age UK Horsham District hung the bunting high and threw open the doors of the Drill Hall, Horsham to entertain 115 guests for a Strictly Vintage 1940’s/50’s themed tea dance. There was a fabulous turnout of guests of all ages dressed magnificently in vintage style outfits and the afternoon was spent dancing to music from the era provided by the Legionnaires Dance Band. During the interval guests were treated to a delicious afternoon tea on vintage china served by Splendid Occasions with music provided by Kerry Le Bern and saxophonist Dave Funnell together forming ‘Jazz a Deux’. One guest said: “I used to come to the Blackout dances at the Drill Hall many years ago and it’s been lovely to have a dance again today. The Drill Hall is a wonderful venue and with the vintage china and cake stands, the way you have decorated the place has created an atmosphere of that time.” The money raised goes towards funding the free services Age UK Horsham District offer across the district to support local older people, such as home visiting and our Information & Advice service. KNEPP NOCTURNAL SAFARIS Knepp wildlife safaris are running nocturnal safaris throughout August looking at different species of bats and moths. Knepp plays host to an amazing total of thirteen out of the UK’s seventeen breeding species of bat! The colourful moth population includes the bright pink-and-yellow elephant hawk moth, the buff-tip moth (which thinks it’s a twig!) and other delightfully named moths like the setaceous Hebrew character, rosy footman and chocolate-tip. TAKE YOUR TOPS OFF Residents are being asked by West Sussex County Council to make sure they are taking their bottle tops and plastic lids off their containers. Since household plastic containers have been included in recycling collections, one of the most frequently asked questions relates to the issue of bottle tops and lids. Plastic lids, such as those used on things like coffee jars, margarine tubs or large cosmetic pots, can all be recycled with your regular household collection.

AUGUST 2015 | News However plastic bottle tops, such as those used on milk or soft drink bottles, can’t be recycled as they are too small to be collected by the machinery at the recycling plant in Ford, which is managed by Viridor. Other lids and tops should be removed from the containers before recycling as they are often made from a different material or a different type of plastic to the container. They have to be separated because they have different chemical properties that could affect the end product. David Barling, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “The different materials are separated at the recycling plant and sorted into streams which are used for all kinds of different products. For example your glass coffee jar and its plastic lid need to be separated to ensure they can be recycled – so instead of screwing those lids back on after you’ve washed and dried the items, just pop them into your recycling bin. And while we can’t accept your milk bottle tops, there are several charities based locally who do collect them. AMY AND FRIENDS WIN AT RHS HAMPTON COURT PALACE Congratulations to Henfield garden designer Amy Robertson who, along with two other designers Claire Moreno and Wendy von Buren, has won two prestigious awards for their collaborative garden for Wellbeing for Women charity. The team won Silver Gilt in the Small Garden category during the show, and went on to win the prestigious People’s Choice garden - one of only two People’s Choice awards at the show. The garden was designed for ‘Wellbeing for Women’ (www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk) and its success helped to raise awareness for the charity, which has supported womens health issues since its launch in 1964. Amy said; “This is a charity which is so close to my heart. All three of us have personal connections to the important work this they do, so we are thrilled with the publicity Wellbeing of Women have received through our garden at Hampton Court.” The three gardeners have been overwhelmed by the positive response to their garden, both from visitors to the show and the national and local media. They were all interviewed by Monty Don for the Hampton Court BBC show, as well as a R4 You and Yours radio interview. Amy confirmed that Monty was “absolutely charming and a pleasure to talk to”. All three would like to give their heartfelt thanks to all their supporters. The venture was crowdfunded by family, friends and business supporters. Amy would personally like to thank the residents of Shermanbury Grange who have been so supportive of the garden. Henfield Village wins national Community Hero Award T
his St John Ambulance award was given to representatives of Henfield village in a glittering ceremony on Wednesday 1 July - the Everyday Heroes awards at the Lancaster Hotel in London. Members of HART (Henfield Area Response Team) Martin Tooth, Anne Pryor, Sabrina Varley, Claire Greenfield and Sandra Parsons attended, alongside representatives of Henfield Village Ray Osgood (Chairman of Henfield Parish Council), Gyles and Mo Culver (The White Hart) Emma Osman (BN5 magazine) and Alex Cole (Coles Automotive). They collected the award on behalf of the village from ex-Arsenal footballer Fabrice Muamba. Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallagher, who hosted the awards night, praised Henfield Village for their support of HART. The village has raised over ÂŁ100,000 for the lifesavers since they launched in 2004. Henfield has 24 PADs (Public Access Defibrillators) which have been used in 10 cardiac arrest cases. Henfield has more defibrillator cover per head than any other area in the country. HART have responded to 2,400 emergency 999 calls on behalf of the ambulance service. The very charming Fabrice Muamba, who presented the award to us, spoke of how grateful he was to the lifesavers who refused to give up 2 6 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE ZINE
on him after his heart attack, suffered during a televised football match in 2012. The story hit headlines after he suffered cardiac arrest for an incredible 78 minutes and still made a full recovery. Ambulance crew refusing to give up on him and continued to administer CPR for over an hour. Fabrice spoke of the value of local lifesaving teams such as HART and paid tribute to their volunteering, saying their response times give

All of us were moved by the stories of the other nominees, whose heroic efforts for all the awards illustrated how a good knowledge of first aid can make a real difference in an emergency. Many of those nominated for other award categories were children and young people, and the stories of their acts of bravery and calmness in the face of emergency situations were inspiring.

The HART team were keen to nominate Henfield and surrounding area as a gesture and thank them for all the hard work, effort and support shown to us over these past 11 years. “Our Responder team, the ability to buy defibrillators and other medical equipment, the setting up of Public Access Defibrillator sites and the development of our education programme was only possible because of the enormous generosity shown by our local population friends and relatives. As a consequence the many lives saved and residents treated for by our emergency system can only be described as simply a credit to our caring community. We are so proud to be residents of such a wonderful village.” Ray Osgood, Chairman of Henfield Parish Council, spoke of his pride in the village. “The residents of Henfield Parish and the beautiful surrounding smaller villages and hamlets are extremely proud to receive this award. Macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the UK
T
he macula is an area at the back of your eye that you use for seeing fine details such as reading a book. Macular degeneration (MD) covers a number of conditions which affect the macula. The conditions affect your ability to do certain tasks such as reading and watching television, but do not affect your ability to walk around as your side vision is not affected. One of the most common symptoms of MD is noticing that straight lines appear wavy or there are patches missing from your vision. You may not notice this if it happens in one eye as your other eye will compensate, so it is important to regularly check your vision in each eye separately. You can do this by looking with each eye separately at the straight lines on a door frame or Venetian blind. If you notice the lines are distorted or there are missing patches, you should see your optometrist straight away. The most common forms of MD happen more as you get older and are known as age-related MD (AMD). Around one in 10 people aged 65 or older show some signs of MD caused by a genetic condition but this is less common than AMD. AMD can be ‘wet’ or ‘dry’:
Dry MD is much more common than wet MD and is when yellow deposits, known as drusen, build up behind the macular. This may, in time, affect your vision, though this normally happens slowly. No treatment has yet been developed for dry MD. Wet MD happens when abnormal blood vessels begin to grow behind the macula and leak fluid. This pushes the macula away from its blood supply at the back of the eye and causes a rapid loss of vision. It is usually associated with you noticing distorted vision (straight lines become wavy, or you have a blank spot in the centre of your vision). You can check this yourself by looking at straight lines such as door and window frames or venetian blinds. Or, you can look at a grid of squares printed on paper, called an Amsler chart. Peter James & Nick Herbert open Henfield Tennis Club’s pavilion

unting, Pimms and glorious sunshine were all in evidence on Saturday 27 July, along with club members, visitors and representatives from Sussex Tennis at the opening of their brand new pavilion. Local award winning crime writer Peter James was given the golden key to unlock the door and was then joined by Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert to cut the ribbon. Peter James spoke of his love of tennis and how he is a great advocate and keen player of the sport. He said playing kept him fit, mentally alert and he loves the social aspect of the game. In his latest book, ‘You Are Dead’, his main character Inspector Roy Grace moves to Henfield village. “Seeing this newly laid patio in front of the pavilion is giving

me some ideas, Henfield Tennis Club could be an excellent crime scene for my next novel!” Nick Herbert praised the work of the club members and committee in pushing forward with the plans. “The pavilion is a great credit to the Club and a legacy for the village. It’s important to provide facilities for sport in rural areas, to encourage good health and the social wellbeing of the village. Much of the success of the club is because of their forward thinking attitude towards opening the club for all – from young families and school children to the older generations. The coaching team has done tremendous work, and this linked with top class facilities means a bright future for tennis in the village. And who knows – perhaps the next British tennis star!” Digby Stephenson, chairman of the Club, said; “Today is the culmination of lots of effort by lots of people. With the building of the 4th court three years ago, all that seemed to be missing was a comfortable pavilion. To get a £50,000 Sport England grant was the start of our work, alongside £20,000 from Section 106 planning money from Horsham, our visions were at last affordable. We’ve used local builders and kept our budget on track, we hope people enjoy the new facilities and bear with us while we put the finishing touches to the building and landscaping. A huge thank you to everyone who’s been involved at all levels, we are very proud of this beautiful building and know it will help tennis to grow in the village.” Emma Osman

Get Safe – Kids be Water Wise Tragically each year approximately 480 people drown each year in the UK, according to figures released by the Amateur Swimming Association. Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death for children in the UK and the majority of these children are young boys. At The Sussex Swim School we incorporate water safety into our lessons throughout the year. During the ‘Get Safe Campaign’ we show the children how important it is to be safe and sensible around water. They are taught how to perform rescues safely without getting themselves into danger. We use all sorts of different items to perform the rescues, encouraging the children to participate and use their imaginations. All children believe they are invincible so parents need to educate their children so they know the dangers. Children need to learn how to shout for help and they need to know how to use their mobile phones in an emergency.
Get Safe – Kids Be Water Wise: S = Spot the dangers A = Ask advice F = Always go with a friend E = Learn how to help in an Emergency Children will always get up to mischief, start showing off. They need to know that if they see their friend/sibling/dog fall in to any body of water, stream, off a jetty, off a pier that they must not jump to help them. If they do, then there are two people in danger of drowning. They should try to stay calm and shout for help, call for their parents/guardian, or call 999 if they are inland or 112 if they are near the coast. Children can really help, by talking to the casualty, trying to keep them calm and encouraging them to swim to water’s edge. If the casualty can’t swim, they should be encouraged to roll onto their back. Throwing the casualty something buoyant can save their lives: a football, a rugby ball, or a plastic fizzy drink bottle - anything that floats can be used as an emergency rescue aid. You must encourage the casualty to hold on with both their hands. If the casualty is near to the water’s edge, the rescuer could perform a reaching rescue. Anything long to extend their reach will do: a cricket bat, a tennis racquet, a baseball bat, a stick, a branch or a broom. The rescuer needs to lie flat on their tummies and using whatever they can find, stretch and reach towards the casualty, encouraging them to hold on with both their hands. They can then pull the casualty safely to water’s edge. If a reaching rescue is performed standing up, with the casualty panicking and desperate to get out of the water, they will pull hard on the branch/bat, thus pulling the rescuer in to the water on top of them. You then have two casualties in the water. Water is great fun but dangerous too, so please be careful in and around water this summer. Hilary Silverman Sussex Swim School

Exploring the Downs Link
T
he Downs Link is a beautiful 37-mile long bridleway shared by walkers, horse-riders and cyclists between Shoreham and Guildford. It’s a haven for both wildlife and people alike and it provides a peaceful escape at any time of the year. Following old railway lines for much of the route it passes right through the BN5 magazine area and it’s easily accessible either for a short excursion, or as part of a longer expedition. With such a fabulous trail right on your doorstep, what are you waiting for? Go and explore! The car park next to the Cat and Canary pub (the former Henfield Station Hotel) is a good place to start and you have the choice of heading north or south. Heading north towards Partridge Green there are numerous opportunities to pick blackberries, sloes and even wild plums in the late summer and early autumn – it’s a real foragers delight! When you arrive at Betley Bridge, look out for the two pillboxes that were built during war to defend it against German bombers. The bridge was of strategic importance during the Second World War as the railway line carried trains full sugar beet from Sussex farms through Henfield and on towards London. Jane lives on the coast, but her horse Murphy is stabled in Henfield and Jane rides along the Downs Link most days. “I love the fact that virtually everyone I meet on the Downs Link is really friendly and considerate and I would say that about 95% of 3 8 | B N 5 M A GA ZINE
the people smile! We often go north up to Partridge Green, but the section south towards Steyning is also lovely - you can join up with the bridle path along the River Adur. With Murphy I am limited as to which refreshment stops I can use, but Stan’s Bike Shack is a favourite. Murphy is always made very welcome and we stop for an apple for him and an iced latte for me! Springtime is my favourite season along the Downs Link and this year the Blackthorn and Hawthorn blossom was absolutely amazing – it was like riding through a spectacular white corridor.” Continuing further north you pass Homelands Equestrian, one of the few livery yards with direct access to the Downs Link. If you are lucky you may see some of their beautiful horses grazing in the fields that run alongside the Link. If you are in need of sustenance, you soon reach Stan’s Bike Shack serving great coffee and delicious cake (as well as bacon rolls if you need something more substantial!). Alternatively you can continue on past the Lock Estate into Partridge Green where you can quench your thirst at The Partridge (otherwise known as the Dark Star Brewery Tap) or The Green Man.

AUGUST 2015 | Countryside West Grinstead Old Station is the next place to stop with its wonderfully restored platform, signal and old railway carriage (which has recently had a new lick of paint courtesy of the West Sussex Countryside Rangers and their team of volunteers). Look out for the new brass plaques that detail the historical features. The Orchard Restaurant is also a good refreshment stop. Suzie lives in West Grinstead and often uses the Downs Link for family walks and cycle rides with her two young children: “What I really like about the Downs Link is that you can go from village to village without coming into contact with a car. There’s some great refreshment stops too and I can really recommend Stan’s Bike Shack and The Partridge Pub in Partridge Green. The best bit is by West Grinstead railway, where the children can lift the signal and go into the old train carriage. There is always a friendly volunteer to talk to the children, show them the model train and the odd badger skull or two!” The wildlife along the Downs Link is just fantastic – just a couple of weeks ago we saw a Red Kite near West Grinstead – that was a real highlight.”

Things you need to know The Downs Link is chock full of wildlife: barn owls, nightingales, kingfishers, butterflies, glow worms and bats can all be spotted at various times of the year. The West Sussex Countryside Rangers will be hosting two exciting evening walks over the coming months: ‘Bats, worms and meteors’ on 18 August in Henfield and a ‘Spooky horror walk’ from West Grinstead Old Railway Station on 27 October. Check out our what’s on pages for more information. If you are driving to access the Downs Link, please make sure you park in a designated car park (for example at West Grinstead Old Station or next to the Cat & Canary in Henfield), rather than on the bridleway itself as this can cause problems for horse riders and cyclists. The Downs Link is a wonderful place for dog walking, but please be considerate and dispose of dog poo responsibly – contrary to popular belief there’s no dog poo fairy to remove bags of dog poo from the trees! During the summer months the Adur Valley Line number 3 bus (operated by Southern Transit) operates a brilliant service every two hours between Shoreham, up through Bramber and Steyning to Henfield and onwards through Partridge Green to Southwater Country Park. Alternatively, the number 17 bus (operated by Stagecoach) links Partridge Green with Henfield and the number 106 bus (operated by Compass Travel) links Henfield with Bramber and Steyning. If you fancy volunteering to help maintain the Downs Link, the West Sussex Countryside Rangers would love to hear from you. They have two types of volunteers: Countryside volunteers (who do all sorts of work from installing benches, fencing, coppicing, clearing trees and surveying for wildflowers every Friday) and Carriage volunteers (who work at the carriage at West Grinstead and open it up to the public on Sundays to chat about the Downs Link, history of the railway). Parts of the bridleway and public footpaths that access it are across private land and are maintained by local landowners so please treat their land and livestock with respect. If you come across any access problems, contact the Public Rights of Way (PROW) team at West Sussex County Council. Heading north you pass by Copsale before reaching Southwater Country Park where you will find a visitor centre, café, toilet facilities and a recently revamped adventure playground and dinosaur trail. This section is well surfaced and is ideal for junior walkers and cyclists who may need motivating with the promise of an ice cream or the sighting of a dinosaur at the end of their journey! The lake is used for water sports (sailing, canoeing and kayaking) and is also home to swans ducks and moorhens, but you can also paddle or swim in the roped off area if you need to cool down after a hot ride! Beyond Southwater the Link continues northward past Christ’s Hospital School towards Rudgwick with its unique double bridge (which is featured in the Downs Link logo) and Bramley that still retains some railway memorabilia at the former station. The trail eventually comes to St Martha’s just outside Guildford, which is the official start of the Downs Link.
Alternatively, you can head south from Henfield. If you need to build up your strength (or need a dose of caffeine!) before you start your expedition you are spoilt for choice: on the Link itself is the Cat and Canary pub or you can head east onto Henfield High Street where there are several pubs and cafes including The White Hart, The George The Plough, Café des Amis, Truffles and Taste Deli. The Downs Link starts again just South of Hollands Road and the Countryside Rangers will be starting work to improve the surface here soon. It continues south over Streatham Bridge towards Bramber Castle. Here you can make a detour into Steyning or carry on. South of Bramber the West Sussex Countryside Rangers have recently made a new path going under the A283 to avoid the busy road crossing – a very welcome improvement! From this point you follow the River Adur that meanders south past the historic hamlets of Botolphs (with its beautiful Saxon Church) and Coombes. Once you come into sight of the imposing Lancing College and Shoreham Airport (famous for its Art Deco terminal building), you are close to your journey’s end. Shoreham is the end of the Down’s Link and for those brave enough, a dip in the sea at Shoreham Beach is the ideal celebration in the warmer summer months! Sarah Butler

She is the local coordinator for the Breeze Network – bike rides for women. “For those just getting into cycling, the Downs Link is the perfect car-free place to build up confidence. There are lots of great circular cycle routes from the Downs Link: one of my favourites is south to Shoreham and then over the wooden bridge, past Lancing College and back up through Coombes and Botolphs to Steyning, stopping off at the Steyning Tea Rooms of course! Persistent Pain
We all feel pain from time to time. When someone injuries themselves, specific recognise this as pain, which nerves in turn triggers the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s repa ir mechanism. As the problem resolves, the pain tends to improv e and usually disappears months. This type of pai within 3-6 n could be argued to be beneficial: if it hurts, you try and avoid doing wha are likely to tever it is that has caused the pain, so you are less injure yourself in that way likely to again.
Occasionally the pain con tinues even after the tissue healing has finis hed. When pain continues after this point, it becomes known as persistent (often referred to as chronic) pain. This type of pain is not beneficial and is a result of the nerv es becoming over sensitised, which means that a painful response will be triggered much more easily than normal. ith the economy settling down post-recession business disposals are becoming more commonplace. The reasons for this include: the availability of Entrepreneurs’ Relief, leaving gains potentially taxable at only 10%; retirement; and a change of either focus or lifestyle by the owners. However the market performs, vendors will always wish to achieve the highest possible value from selling their business with the least possible disruption and aggravation. Selling a business, in most cases, is a once in a lifetime experience and you only have one opportunity to get it right. Therefore it is important to appoint an adviser who knows the process and who can advise on how to avoid the pitfalls. More importantly, they will ensure your interests are protected throughout the whole process. A good corporate finance adviser will be able to guide and help the owners to decide when the time is right to sell. In fact, your adviser might even suggest buying another business first as a bolt-on; if the synergy is there it should add significant value to your business in a relatively short time, leading to the combined entity being highly marketable.
