erry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope you are able to spend some relaxing time with your family and friends. The holiday season often reminds us to be generous and giving. It is also a time to reflect on the year and what you want to do differently next year. Don’t be too hard on yourself, however. I read a great article recently and in fact included it in the 95120 Magazine, which detailed some important ways to keep your holidays less stressful. Family is great to have around, but also members occasionally can be a bit overwhelming. “Many families have ‘roles’ each member falls into that have more to do with who individuals used to be rather than who they are today.” Your holiday doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t set the bar too high. The important thing is to stay as stress free as possible, so the friends and family around you can enjoy your company, while you mutually enjoy theirs. If you feel you don’t have enough company, try community events, religion, or other social groups. LG TM

Winter Wonderland–

Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild 2015 Fashion Show for Financial Aid How long was the planning process? The planning starts right after the last Fashion Show ends so a year of coordination and planning. A Chair Elect spends the year training with the Current Chair and immediately take over once the Fashion Show is done. How many parents are on the committee? There are over 250 parent volunteers who have helped in all facets of the production, from costumes, model training, underwriting solicitation, program ads, etc. How many sub-committees of volunteers are there? There are 8 core team sub-committees, 10 Business committees and 13 Production committees. How many years have they been holding this event? This was the 61st year- from its humble beginnings from a backyard garden to now hosting over 800 for the lunch show and 1000+ for dinner at the Fairmont. Where does it take place and how many attend? How many kids are in the show? Typically held in the 2nd or 3rd week of November, the show has 80+ teen models (approximately 40 Bellarmine students plus local senior girls as well as sports teams and clubs such as Hockey, Varsity Football and Robotics).

How many students does it help? Proceeds benefit Bellarmine’s Direct Financial Aid Fund and Financial Aid Endowment. The funds help approximately 25% of the student population, so nearly 400 students who otherwise may not be able to afford Bellarmine. How long is the event? The event is a lunch and dinner show held on the same day at the Fairmont San Jose. “The Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild is excited to put together a memorable show to commemorate sixty years of supporting financial aid at Bellarmine. Through our work on the fashion show, we help support families and their deserving young men so that they can experience the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person,” explained Susan Bunce, 2015 Winter Wonderland Chair. “Our school strives to provide fair economic access to families of qualified students through affordable tuition and financial aid. With our admission process being need-blind, we admit qualified students who reflect the broad spectrum of our community and provide the support necessary for each admitted student to complete his high school education,” states Chris Meyercord, Bellarmine’s President. Nearly 25 percent of the student body receives tuition assistance, with Bellarmine providing $4.1 million in financial

aid during this school year (the highest of any private high school in California). Last year’s fashion show raised over $400,000 in net funds to benefit the Direct Financial Aid Fund and the Financial Aid Endowment. For nearly 165 years, Bellarmine has maintained the Jesuit tradition of educating adolescents while developing them to be ‘men for and with others.’ Through their efforts with this long-standing annual fashion show, the Bellarmine mothers are role models for their sons, exemplifying what it means to be women for others.

f you’ve always wanted to go to Cuba, now is the time. With looser U.S. regulations on American travel in place since September, this exotic island beckons. The rules do not yet allow for open tourism, which means your travel experience will be meaningful and will include direct contact with local Cubans. “People-to-people” travel experiences –one of the 12 categories of travel currently allowed by the U.S. government-- require at least two meaningful interactions per day. Liz Harwood, a member of the team of travel experts at Travel Advisors of Los Gatos, took advantage of the opportunity to go to Cuba this fall. Her tour, with a group from Santa Clara University, focused on sustainable agriculture and market garden vegetable production. The group visited eco-farms and small community gardens which sell produce locally. They also met with the leader of a commercial eco-farm who shared her dream: a Whole Foods Market in Cuba. The group visited a clinic, where they met with doctors to discuss the quality of healthcare in Cuba, and attended a special reception at the home of a politically connected local involved in charitable works. More leisurely activities included a driving tour to the west coast for hiking, limestone karsts and other scenic wonders, and a tour of some of Cuba’s colorful historic architecture.

Liz found it fascinating to visit this country where ongoing development is so evident. Under Communist rule, there are no terrible slums in Cuba, and there is free medical care and education through the university level for everyone. Although private enterprise is restricted, individuals have recently been allowed to operate businesses outside their homes, resulting in more and larger businesses. A home-based restaurant which could accommodate 20 thus grows to a commercial restaurant seating 60. For a more luxurious Cuba travel experience, consider a cruise. In 2016, Pearl Seas Cruises will offer 10-day cultural exchange cruises. Highlights include several UNESCO World Heritage Sites –including Old Havana, San Pedro de la Roca Castle, and the ecological wonders of Maria La Gorda; firsthand interactions with local artists, musicians and historians; and all the creature comforts of a luxury cruise ship. Make your travel plans today to be among the 21st century’s first legal American visitors to this tropical haven, and don’t forget to bring home some authentic Cuban cigars and rum. For a trip to Cuba – or wherever you want to go—call Travel Advisors today (408) 354-6531.

Housewives of LG–

Yancie Richmond

I

was born in San Jose in 1963 and have stayed local throughout my life. My family and I moved to Los Gatos in 1973. I attended Louise Van Meter Elementary School, Fisher Middle School, Los Gatos High School (Class of 1981), West Valley College and San Jose State where I completed a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. In 1988, I married my husband Mike Richmond. We had a “Big Fat Greek Wedding” at St. Nicolas church in San Jose. The next several years we were very busy creating our family. We have three sons and a daughter. Michael, Matthew, Mitchell, and Marcella. For the next 18 years, I happily stayed at home raising our four children while Mike was busy protecting the citizens of San Jose as a Police Officer. My passion has always been raising our children and staying involved in their education by volunteering at their schools. I still go back to Los Gatos High School and volunteer even though my kids have all graduated. After we married, we lived first in Campbell and then San Jose from 1988 to 2003. We moved back to Los Gatos in 2003 and bought my family home to facilitate taking care of my dad who

suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. We took care of him in our home until he passed away in 2013. Being a caregiver was a very difficult job but my husband, children and I all worked together to make sure my father knew he was loved and cared for until the very end. In 2007, I decided to put my Criminal Justice degree to use and went to work for the San Jose Police department as a 911 police dispatcher. I retired in 2015. In 2011, I joined a charity group named Silicon Valley Cares. This dedicated group of women raises money for various charity organizations each year. They are a fun group of caring ladies and I love the volunteer work. I am very proud of all our children. they have stayed local and enjoy contributing in various ways to our town. Michael Jr. is a Deputy Sheriff, Matthew owns Los Gatos Power Washing, Mitchell works at the Los Gatos Apple store and Marcella is in college at Sonoma State University. They are all LGHS graduates from 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014.

My next adventure in life will be getting my husband to retire and get out of law enforcement. We want to continue our travels and continue working on our app named Kinoke. During my dad’s battle with Alzheimer’s we realized how brief life is and although a great story teller, we had nothing written down to memorialize the great memories of his life. We started developing Kinoke as an app to honor my dad. We feel very blessed and love living here in beautiful Los Gatos.

Justin’s Catering and Event Productions LG Magazine Review

I have both been a guest to events and occasions catered by Justin’s Catering as well as being their customer. Through the years I have been impressed with their professionalism, tasteful entres and friendliness.” – Chrissy Derksen

I was excited to be invited into Justin’s Catering to discuss their marketing, but also get treated to a tangy Asian Chicken Salad, which happens to be one of my favorite lunch options. I enjoy their menu from light perfectly prepared salads with fabulously tasty dressings such as this, to their hearty and deliciously prepared dinners, such as pork or salmon with amazing sauces, sides and soups. Besides their always pleasing fares, the facility itself is spacious and elegant, including meeting rooms and a large bar area. As the name suggests, Justin’s is available to cater any occasion from an intimate family dinner or birthday party in the privacy of your own home to a corporate event for hundreds of attendees. However, if you want to use their location for a private or work party, you will definitely be impressed by the size and ambiance of their well-planned facility. In fact they even have a back room which is perfect for a conference or breakout sessions. The large bar area is great for a sporting event or pre-celebration. Justin’s has even held proms at their venue, as well as formal rehearsal dinners, networking events and parties. They strive to be your one-stop shop and have many happy, long-term returning accounts and customers, which says it all.

Justin’s Catering & Event Productions Offers the Unique Option of Having Their Team Come to Your Location or Providing an Upscale, Large, Meeting Environment for Your Event(s).
