very now and again, the events around the community and the charities and individuals that are recommended for coverage have a similar theme. This is one of those times - centering on performing arts. We share a heartwarming story about a special band playing at the Saddle Rack for a fundraiser over the weekend. Then there is the beloved Pioneer High School drama teacher that is presenting his most challenging acheivement yet, after a 25year tenure, with his students performing Les Misérables (student edition.) It doesn’t stop there, however. Our “95120 Housewife” this issue is a former Ice Capades performer who shares some intruiging aspects of her exciting life. I really enjoyed this issue and hope you do too!

2016 Rockin’ the Rack

Relay for Life

Interview with Tracy Cressio How long has Almaden been holding Relay for Life?

This is our 10th year. WooHoo!!

What got you involved with Relay for Life? I understand you are the Relay for Life “Entertainment Chair” this year?

Charlene Chavez asked me to join her team back in the beginning and the rest is history. It’s been a great and wonderful adventure. I am a Cancer Survivor, I have been a care giver, and I have lost too many friends and family members to cancer. We lost our guitar player from last years show, 3 months after he played on the Rockin’ the Rack Stage last year. We will be doing a dedication to him this year in the opening band Frontage Road. Dean wanted so badly to play last year and flew out from AZ to do the show. He gave everything to be a part of Rockin’ the Rack as it was very important to him. We miss him terribly, and this will be an emotional show for the band.

How can members of the community join Relay for Life? Do they need to join an existing team or start their own?

gearing up once again to “fight back” hosting a Walk 4 Values/Relay Recess event this spring as their fundraiser for this years Relay For Life event. Their fundraiser theme is “What can a water bottle, a Dime, and a little kindness do?” It can do a lot. THEY ROCK.

What do the funds for ACS get spent on?

No one involved in this relay gets paid. We are all volunteers. That goes for the bands and the groups at Rockin’ the Rack as well. Even the Saddle Rack Staff give back all night long. Running over with their tips ,“giving back” in the raffles, buying a cookie, or just tossing it in our donations box. Its truly amazing the power and the extent of the giving that goes on. All proceeds go directly to The American Cancer Society. Their website is Cancer.org. They help so many with programs such as: Support Groups, Road to Recovery, Patient Lodging Programs, Reach to Recovery, TLC hair loss and mastectomy products, Look Better Feel Better, Look Better Feel Better for Teens and more.

Members can join us in a few different ways: Join an existing team, start their own team with a group from work or school or social, or they can also join the Staff RFL Committee where we can always use extra volunteers. If interested one can contact any member or me at tlcressio@yahoo.com or though our RFL-American Cancer Society Rep Steve Yodz, his email is: steve. yodz@cancer.org

What is the age group involved at the Relay?

There are some very creative costumes and themes that the team members organize. What was your favorite during your tenure?

My husband Lee has been involved in bands/music all his life in the Bay Area. I was behind the scenes taking pictures, cooking, sewing something or other for them and a busy mom. Then one day many years later we were on a trip overseas for his business. He thought it would be funny to secretly put my name on a list to sing karaoke one night in one of the ships bars. The girl that was on the list before me was called to go up, but she got freaked out and crawled under her table and wouldn’t come out. I

I have always loved how the kids get involved. The Boy Scouts did “Rent A Scout” where you could donate to their Team and they would walk for you if you were unable to walk. It was wonderful. There was the Bra Team (who decorated bras with flowers, beads, crystals and themes), but of course our Star Whales Team from WIlliams Elementary is close to my heart. They are 06 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

Kindergarten to adult. Involvement can be on the track, behind the scenes, or in supporting roles as we prepare for the event. High schoolers, middle schoolers elementary- we all come together as a community.

You bring a special treat to the fundraising. Your family has a band which you are a member. How did you get involved?

leaned over and said to Lee, “That is ridiculous, just go up right?” Well, they then called my name and I was speechless to say the least. Being surrounded by Lee’s business group, and after making that bold statement what could I do? I got up (not happy at all with my husband at the time), and sang Shocking Blues Venus. The rest of the story is history. I wish I had a photo of Lee’s face as I sang. His version of the story is close, he loves to say I got a standing ovation. It was an experience I will never forget. Now I am blessed to be in a very cool group of people including my husband Lee (drums), my son Vince (bass), his best friend Travis (Keyboards), Lee’s childhood friend Ed (guitar) and his wife Debbie, my wonderful cohort and friend as percussion and female lead singer with me. We have a blast!

How long have you been holding Rockin’ the Rack with your team?

This is our 5th year, and so very special as it’s Valentines Day. Hence the theme. Love and Giving Back: A Date Night Out! The Saddle Rack is an incredible host. So welcoming and wonderfully giving.

How many people are you hoping to attend?

I have always said, “Let’s Pack The Rack!” I hope we do just that. We are working very hard to break down the territorial barriers within the Bay Area Relays. Meaning when you hold a fundraiser the team usually gets all the funds. We have been putting hours in, meeting with ACS regional groups, spreading the word that this is about raising money to fight back not about a territory. If another Relay Area wants to join us and help sell tickets to achieve the “Let’s Pack the Rack” slogan, then their Relay gets to keep that money for their Relay Event. This is not about territory, it’s about fighting cancer. My dream is to sell out The Saddle Rack one day. How cool would that be?

What is the most inspiring moment you have experienced? Meeting the Fighters, the survivors, the caregivers and all their stories. You can’t imagine what these individuals go through. Our guitar player

Deano, who played at our 3rd annual event only to be diagnosed with cancer himself. Then he was to have been in remission, fights to get healthy to come back and play again at the event last year, and does, only to lose his battle 3 months later. He wanted to be on that stage with his band mates that he has played with since high school so badly one more time! (Frontage Road band members fly in from Seattle, Arizona and Texas to play this show….and they play for free). The sweetest little girl who was given very little chance of survival when she was diagnosed at the age of 2 years old when she woke one day and couldn’t walk due to an incredible amount of tumors on her spine, only to prove us all wrong and is running, yes running today and as precocious as ever after undergoing a tremendous number of surgeries. Or the husband, who lost his wife to cancer 22 years ago, who comes to The Saddle Rack every year I have been there for Rockin’ the Rack Pre-sale events and will buy my raffle tickets in a 50/50 drawing, and will win, only to turn and give it all back to me and say, “here, you take this back and put it towards the fight. The people, it’s about the people!”

I understand a previous year’s chair Penny Fraley who moved out of state is making an appearance this year. Will that make a difference in attendance and morale? Absolutely! She is amazing!

What are the event date/time/locations? Ticket sales?

Tickets can be purchased through me, or any Relay team member, on line at The Saddle Rack or at the door. Tickets are $20.00 from us and on the Saddle Rack website, but there is a paypal processing fee of $5. The night of the show at the door the tickets are $30.00. Rockin’ the Rack Against Cancer Concert is Sunday, February 14th at The Saddle Rack Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RockintheRackAgainstCancer2016. Pack the Park is a San Jose Giants Relay For Life Event: June 18, 2016 at San Jose Giants Stadium

Pioneer High School

Steve Dini - “25 Years of Drama!” By Jane Johnson Could this be the best production yet for Pioneer High School’s celebrated 25 year veteran drama teacher? Steve Dini has spent the last quarter of a century creating a thriving drama program at Pioneer High School and is beloved by students, parents and community members alike. What better way to celebrate 25 years than to take on “Les Misérables (student edition)?” In musical theater circles, “Les Misérables” is as revered as it gets. The acting and singing rigor demands truly talented performers. Steve Dini has cultivated his students for years, encouraging them in his Advanced Drama class to believe in themselves and reach for the stars. This year, after assessing his current talent pool, he felt he’d finally found the match. That, and a desire to produce and direct this particular show before retiring at some point. It was time to take on “Les Mis” and his 25th anniversary felt like the perfect mark. Mr. Dini spent these last many years building such rapport with 08 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

his students, parents and even extended family members, that many are still involved with his productions years after their own children have graduated. Returning this year again are graduated parents Jan Vincent in costumes, Jim Wolk in set construction, Mike Hanlon in sound design and Lorie Biviano in set design. And those are only a few of the happy helpers who generously give of their time. If you want to know how much he cares about his kids and their opportunities, just look to his and his wife, Sue’s, creation of “The Glue Factory” - a volunteer community theater whose mission is to stage productions every Fall solely to fund the school’s spring musicals. Each year for the past 17 years, a group of talented alumni and interested community members join the Dinis in this labor of love. To get more sense of Mr. Dini just ask his students. “I appreciate how he keeps it cool (even when the pressure’s on), and how he supports his students” says one current Advanced Drama

kid. Dini even gives of his time volunteering at the College of Adaptive Arts to bring a love of musical theater and practical acting skills to college kids with disabilities who are March 31, April 1, 2 pursuing the arts. April 6, 7 & 8

Housewives of 95120–

Patty Gur

What is your background?

I came to live in Almaden in 1965 with my family who relocated from southern California. I absolutely love living in Almaden. I’ve had family and friends here for decades. My brother, Greg Davis was the family and global outreach pastor at Saratoga Federated. My sister-in-law, Annette Davis is a College Admission Consultant at College Point Consulting. My father, Scott Davis was the athletic director for ABOY [Almaden, Branham, Oakgrove Youth] and CEO of Ball Screws and Actuators. As a child, my passion was ice skating. My amazing mother, Gail Davis drove me every morning before school at 4:00am to Eastridge Ice Arena which is no longer in existence. And, because of my parents support, I was fortunate enough to win a skating contract with Ice Capades to perform and tour in their shows. I came back after touring with Ice Capades and working for Bruce McNall as his executive assistant in Beverly Hills. He was a world renowned numismatist, owner of the Los Angeles Kings hockey team and was a movie producer who produced Hollywood movies including The Manhattan Project and Weekend at Bernie’s. I left LA and came back to Almaden and founded Global Data Supply. GDS was a private label manufacturer and distributor of computer networking, telephone and data communication products. We had high profile projects which included Ronald Reagan Library, San Jose Arena, and the Fairmont Hotel to name a few. GDS was nationwide in many electronic retail chains.

You have a husband and two beautiful kids. Tell us about your life in Almaden, and what brought you back to Almaden to raise your family, considering you were raised here.

I’ve travelled around the world and definitely learned a very valuable lesson and realized that most people want the same thing in life which is a loving family, great friends and financial stability. I believe Almaden offers this lifestyle. My most important job in my life is being a mom. I 10 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine

have two fantastic kids: Michael who is in 6th grade at Bret Harte, and plays ice hockey and football and is a wonderful artist. My daughter, Gabby is a junior at Leland and is the co-captain of their brand new dance team. She has danced since the age of three with Action Day Primary Plus, which is now West Valley Dance Company where she dances competitively. My husband and love of my life, Danny was originally from Israel and is the oldest of six boys. He was an Israeli Air Force pilot, and is an executive Vice-President of worldwide sales for Chelsio Communications. I wanted to raise a family in one of the best places in the US and it happens to be Almaden!

You skated with Dorothy Hamill. Was she an inspiration? Who else did you skate with and for how long?

Dorothy Hamill was and still is a superstar. She was always gracious. It was one of the most exciting times of my life because there were so many stars around her. I remember being at her bachelorette party and Dorothy’s fiance, Dean Paul Martin, son of Dean Martin kept trying to crash our party. Subsequently, I met her father-in-law Dean Martin. Movie stars would come and see us backstage and their children would ask us for our autographs- It was surreal. A former vice president of the United States was a huge fan and went to our parties back then. The very last day of Ice Capades I got into trouble because Lynn Holly Johnson, former James Bond girl who starred in Ice Castles came to Hawaii to see our last show and asked me if she could do my number. I had an enormous headdress that she had difficulty wearing and didn’t know where to go. We all wore sunglasses while skating and had the biggest laugh ever. After Ice Capades I skated with Dorothy Hamill in Nutcracker on Ice and performed with the San Francisco Symphony for their 50th year anniversary. At that time, I skated with Charles Shulz’s daughter,

Jill – the comic strip Peanuts creator, Snoopy and Charlie Brown and we skated outside the Embarcadero in San Francisco. After a very long hiatus, I invented and cocreated Kristi Yamaguchi’s Fantasy Ice Skating CD-ROM game for children with Morningstar Multimedia which sold exclusively through Wal-Mart stores worldwide. I had so much fun skating with Kristi – she is a wonderful person both on and off the ice.

You mention you have written a romantic screen play. Would you like to tell our readers about it?

The film, Freestyle is a love story set in the backdrop of the US National Figure Skating Championships. The stars are Nick and Gabrielle, they were high school sweethearts, and through a series of events, they are thrown back together. At first, they both have pre-conceived ideas about the other and because they are both professional athletes, there is a great deal of pride on both sides. As life would have it, Gabrielle is coaching a very talented little skater... who turns out to be Nick’s daughter. They deal with the politics of the judges, the jealousies of other skaters, the scary and funny stage Moms while their entourage of former NFL players cheers them on. There is plenty of laughter and tears along the way and ultimately they fall in love. Together they fight the road to a National championship. The daughter wins Nationals and they finally have the family they always wanted, but did not know they needed. Kristi Yamaguchi was one of the first to sign on for the project. Signed stars include top Olympic ice skating champions, cast members of Dancing with the Stars and over 80 NFL football players.

I hear (from the person who nominated you for this issue) that you are practicing martial arts. Can you elaborate about your workout that you enjoy so much? I can tell you this; there really is no need for psychotherapists if you take Krav Maga which is a form of self-defense and physical training, first developed by the Israeli army in the 1940s. It is based on the use of reflexive responses to threatening situations. It has changed my life. I drive to Santa Clara to Academy of Self Defense and take classes from a master: Ev Pepper. It is an incredibly strenuous exercise while teaching you to defend yourself in any situation. It is so emotional sometimes I tear up. If you have any stress, after this class it is gone.

I understand you support a lot of local charity events, and that ‘you are a great poker player.’ Would you like to comment?

Top Photo: Danny, Patty, Michael, Gabby during a family outing. Middle Photo: Patty, Danny and Lynn Holly Johnson at the 75th Ice Capades Reunion.

I love supporting our community and local charity. Silicon Valley Cares is a terrific charity because of the women involved. I’ve hosted poker parties at my home for our schools and we have a great time. It bothered me that the men’s poker tournaments always made more than the women, so I made it my goal to beat them out for our kids’ sake and we succeeded. I am involved with local community issues. For example, many Almaden residents went to speak at the county supervisor’s meeting to object to the proposed homeless encampment off of Camden Avenue and I am happy to report we succeeded. I would like to add that we objected to the homeless encampment in Almaden because of the lack of resources and services available to them. Almaden residents want to successfully and effectively respond to the crises of homelessness. Our local representatives listened. I support our leaders and am grateful I am able to voice my opinion.

Droning on...

I

n late December 2015, the FAA initiated registration requirements for drones via its drone registration site. Since that time, approximately 300,000 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have been registered. The term “drone” refers to any number of flying devices that can be controlled by onboard computers or by a handheld remote, including a smart phone. Registration is now being required by the U.S. Government for a number of reasons. First, the FAA fears that drones will be used to violate people’s privacy. Second, the FAA fears that drone operators may dangerously interfere with larger aircraft. Third, UAS can just be a nuisance, such as interfering with fire and police departments. Under the new rules, if your UAS weighs more than .55 pounds (about the weight of two sticks of butter), it needs to be registered. If it’s carrying a camera, that counts as part of the weight. The good news is that registration is only $5 for three years, and if your drone is under 55 pounds, you can use the online registration process; however, drones that are used for commercial purposes or weigh more than 55 pounds still need to be registered using a pre-existing paper-based system. Penalties for flying a drone without registration include up to three years in jail, or up to $250,000 in fines. Once you’ve registered, you are cleared for takeoff (but there are still some rules). Just to name a few of the guidelines, • You should not fly the drone above 400 feet (the height of a 30 to 40 story building); • You must always remain in eyesight of the drone; • You cannot fly drones near airports or populated areas, such as concerts or stadiums; • You should not intentionally fly over unprotected people or moving vehicles, and drones should remain at least 25 feet away from individuals and vulnerable property; • You should not fly over sensitive areas, such as prisons, heavily traveled roadways, government facilities, power stations, etc. • You should not conduct surveillance or photograph people where there is an expectation of privacy. Privacy is obviously a concern when it comes to drones. A few months ago, a father used a shotgun to bring down a drone that was flying over his house in order to view his 15-year-old daughter sunbathing. While a few people may feel sorry for the owner of the shotgun damaged drone, many more can relate to the father. Privacy rights have not changed, regardless of drones being a new technology. Just as you are not permitted to place a camera on a long stick to film someone in an area you otherwise are not authorized to enter, using a drone to accomplish the same task is no different. If there’s an expectation of privacy, use of a drone in violation of someone’s privacy rights may not only subject the lurker to criminal action, but also to civil lawsuits as well. So, get your drone registered and use it responsibly… otherwise, it could cost you a lot more than the cost to replace a gunned down drone!
