BEST Physical Therapy Celebrates 20 Years of the “BEST” Approach

“ A

The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” – Thomas A. Edison

lmaden Valley resident, Kathy Johnson Wesolowski PT MSPT OCS, has subscribed to Thomas Edison’s forecast for the past 27 years as a sports and orthopedic physical therapist. The belief in the importance of education and preventing loss of function is the cornerstone of her professional philosophy. Her successful clinic, BEST Physical Therapy, (an acronym for Back Education and Sports Therapy) is recognized as one of the leading rehabilitative and wellness clinics in the area with offices in Almaden Valley and Cupertino. While the practice of physical therapy as a “hands on” approach to managing a wide variety of injury can be traced back thousands of years, the practice as we know it today came into widespread use following WWII. And, the demand is quickly growing as the baby boomers age. Today people are living longer more active lives and the rise of our dependence on technology has introduced a host of device-related neck and back conditions due to improper posture. Much of what physical therapists, or PTs, do requires effective communication, physical touch, and critical thinking. At BEST, the staff of nine highly trained professionals partner with clients to heal their injury and reach their specific goals utilizing a combination of manual therapy, individualized exercise instruction and education. Common conditions can present differently, and the BEST team utilizes communication and deductive reasoning to identify deficits, some of which patients were not even aware. The end result may be that the shoulder pain you felt initially may have originated from a neck or upper back problem that has been intermittently irritating you for years. In acute situations, the staff at BEST Physical Therapy will assess patients to direct them to one of many top healthcare providers in the Bay Area in which we have professional relationships and firsthand knowledge.

Prevention is the BEST Medicine BEST Physical Therapy believes that learning proper body mechanics and how to safely manage your personal wellness should begin early in life. “Every week we have a patient that will say they wish someone had taught them the proper way to exercise, lift, sit or bend when they were young,” according to Kathy.

BEST Physical Therapy Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence

BEST Offers:: • BEST Personal Training • BEST Core Class • Teen Boot Camp • Knee Injury Prevention Screenings • Balance and Fall Prevention • Foot and Ankle Injuries • Overuse Injury Care • Use of Handheld Devices Without Neck Pain • Community & Corporate Lectures on Various Topics

What is The 49er Academy & Whom Do We Serve? Bridging the Opportunity Gap…. Silicon Valley is one of the wealthiest places in the country. The runaway success of tech companies has driven up the cost of living making life in East Palo Alto much harder on children. Poverty is real and the stress children face in poverty -- homelessness, food insecurity, trauma and so forth -- can accumulate over time, damaging students’ ability to learn. Closing the opportunity gap is essential to closing the academic achievement gaps that separate most East Palo Alto students from their peers in our surrounding communities. The San Francisco 49ers Academy opened in 1996 and is designed to keep kids safe, on track and in school. The Academy serves middle school students and provides a small, caring and safe community, both during the school day and in after school programs. We bridge the opportunity gap by creating transformational learning opportunities that empower youth to realize their full potential. By providing our students with the resources, relationships and services they need, we are changing lives, one student at a time.

C

harlene was born and raised in San Jose, married to Mike for 27 years and together have two young sons. Michael is 26 and is in training to become a Master Sommelier. Gabriel is 21 and finishing college at the University of Oregon and plays rugby. Mike is Executive VP at Filice Insurance, almost 27 years now, and continues to train for marathons, 100 mile mountain bike competitions, spearfishes and has the utmost patience to take Charlene on their abalone excursions. Charlene and her family moved to Almaden in 1996 and has since been active in the community. Charlene says, “It began in the boys’ classrooms, then PTA, volunteered as a docent for science and even taught Phys Ed because the school needed help. I wanted to know what was going on at their schools and meet other parents since I was new to this community.” Charlene joined the Almaden Valley Women’s Club(2002), created Team Charlie’s Angels for Relay For Life(2007) and then added Silicon Valley Cares(2010) to her list of organizations. “One of the best ways to give back to your community is to join a local organization. I have met so many very strong women over the years whom I have created lifelong friendships with!” Charlene has always been physically active and played on varsity teams as a freshman through senior year in volleyball, basketball and track and field. In middle school she played tackle football one summer because her friend needed a girl to play against another girl on the other team. “Ha ha I was such a tomboy I didn’t hesitate.” Charlene put together a running team and trained for two marathons and a triathlon but injured her knee and that was the end of her long distance running. She then decided to pull together an annual

Ladies Half Dome Dame Hike for 5 years but since the permits began recently it has been a struggle to obtain them. “I wanted to keep the hikes going and Quicksilver is the perfect place to hike and run to keep in shape.” Charlene also created a private hiking group on FaceBook so that anyone who wants to hike or run can reach out and not go alone. She is planning another Half Dome Hike this year. Other Actvities Charlene’s other favorite activities include abalone diving and cooking. “I have this fear of sharks and the night before a dive trip I experience anxiety and can’t sleep. I once dreamed of that movie “Open Water” and believed it was me who was left behind to fend off the sharks. I woke up in a terrible sweat! Once I’m down in the ocean for a while I actually relax and take in the oceans beauty while I practice my breathing techniques. It’s not as easy as it looks and the preparation of putting on the wetsuit and getting the gear ready is a workout in itself but it’s so worth it! Abalone is such a delicious delicacy and I’m proud that I can contribute to an abalone feast when we are together with friends who also dive.” Speaking of feast Charlene really loves to cook! “I didn’t know how to cook when I first married because as a teen I was busy in the evening at practice or playing sports so my older two sisters learned how to cook. I remember the first meal I cooked as a wife and well, let’s not talk about that, ha ha! I subscribed to BonAppetit, learned to cook and dinners were never dull since then. I cook dinner almost every evening and the most favorite meal I enjoy cooking is Paella because it brings large groups of family and friends together. Food and people are what make me happy.”

Passion for Photography “I often get asked how I started with photography. My brother-in-law gave me his EOS Canon Rebel when our oldest son was 5 and began playing sports. Since then I have not been able to put the camera down. In 2007 our youngest entered his freshman year in high school and I started my photography business.” “I remember photographing my first family here in Almaden and I was so nervous. The images came out great and it turned into a great sale and I knew this is what I wanted to do! It’s not about the money but more about my passion. I have put a lot of time and money into my photography education and I have also met some of the most creative people from all over the world. It has been an exciting experience for me. I’m lucky too that photography has taken me to many places such as Maui, Oahu, Vegas, Michigan, Philadelphia and many other places in the U.S. I have my family to thank, especially my husband, for being so supportive of what I do.”

Photo above: Mike, Charlene, Mike, and Gabe Chavez Photo below: Sample of Charlene Chavez Photography. Photo below rt: Charlene Chavez in action.

Charlene found very quickly that running a photography business requires wearing many hats: there’s the marketer, sales person, social media person and the writer to name a few. Then there’s the actual portrait taking. Taking sports pictures, posing individuals and large families and shooting fashion are all same yet different. They require knowledge of lighting whether you are using natural light or a light modifier. They are different because the dynamics of posing changes with the amount of people involved and then there’s the skill of knowing what to do with the hands, feet, head and positions to make them appear slimmer which is my most requested pose. Charlene’s beautiful portfolio consists of Family Portraits, High School Seniors, Children, Corporate and Business Head Shots. You can view her portfolio on her website at www.CharleneChavezPhotography.com or her blog can be seen at www.CharleneChavezBlog.com. Charlene teaches camera classes & social media at her studio and this fall will have her very first Art Gallery Exhibition. You can connect with Charlene on Instagram, FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Buying a Limited Edition? How Limited is it?

T

his time of year, art buying is on the rise, both in art galleries and at summer and fall art festivals. If you are an active art buyer, you may noticed that more and more artwork is being offered as signed and numbered “limited edition” artwork. From the perspective of an artist or art dealer, limited edition artwork can be attractive, since they can now sell an expensive piece of art more than once. From the collector’s standpoint, it is attractive as well, as the collector can buy artwork which is more “exclusive” than a poster, but more affordable than an original. In fact, with limited editions now printed on canvas and then enhanced with paint by hand, many look so good you might mistake them for an original…but you can buy it at a fraction of the price of the original. The most important aspect of limited edition artwork is that it is limited…so how do you know how “limited” a limited edition is? California, along with 13 other states, each have disclosure laws governing information which must be communicated in writing at the time of sale of limited edition artwork. While the information required varies by state, the general objective is to communicate to the collector the more important details about the limited edition nature of the artwork they are purchasing. These fine art disclosure laws not only cover paintings which are released in limited editions, but also cover photographs, sculptures, and even collages…just about any art object sold as a limited edition. So where is this information about the limited edition artwork you are interested in? The first thing to review is the certificate of authenticity that should accompany the artwork. These certificates can take a variety of forms, but they must provide certain details defined by statute, such as under California Civil Code Section 1740-1745. For works sold in California, the following is just part of the information which art dealers (including artists selling their own work) are required to be provided to a collector, either before or at the time of the sale of any limited edition artwork priced at $100.00 or more: • The name of the artist who created the work. • Whether the limited edition artwork was signed by the artist (or how the artist placed his signature on the limited edition artwork or on the master from which the limited editions were made). • A description of the medium or process (such as etching, engraving, lithographic, serigraphic) used to produce the limited edition artwork. • Whether the master was destroyed after producing the edition (as is often the case with sculptures). • Whether the artist authorized or approved the edition. • The year the limited edition artwork was produced. • The authorized maximum number of signed or numbered impressions in the edition. • The authorized maximum number of unsigned or unnumbered impressions in the edition. • The authorized maximum number of artist’s, publisher’s or other proofs • The total size of the edition. Know your rights as a potential buyer, and ask to see the certificate first. That way, you will be fully informed when you buy that beautiful work of art.

We are a locally owned and operated chiropractic clinic serving the San Jose Area since 1986. Our approach is simple. We believe that health is among our most valuable possessions. And while we generally meet people after they’ve lost their health, our commitment is two-fold. Many people seek care in our practice and have one goal: relief. So that’s where we start! During this initial stage of intensive care, we have several obligations: -Uncover the underlying cause of the health problem -Suggest a care plan to produce the fastest results possible -Offer ways patients can participate in their recovery -Explain the value of post-symptomatic wellness care

In addition, he is an adjunct professor in anatomy at Life Chiropractic College West since 2013. Wellness Care True health is a journey, not a destination. We communicate the value of ongoing chiropractic care. Our desire is to see our practice members abandon the prevailing sickness care model of health (waiting for symptoms and then taking action), in favor of the emerging wellness model. Take a step towards relief. Make an appointment today to discuss your health goals.

Holder’s Country Inn

AESTHETIC and GENERAL DENTISTRY

I have grown close to my patients and care about each of them. Almaden Valley is a great place to live and work. Again, thanks for your friendship, support, and the memories. I look forward to continuing to enjoy my patients for many years to come”.

— Donald A. Pepper, D.D.S.

LOCATED AT 6501 CROWN BLVD, SUITE NO. 104

We have all had wonderful memories through the generations, enjoyed at our local Country Inn. Have you ever taken the time to reflect on their historical value? Most locals have fond memories of family time spent in their restaurant. The family-owned Country Inn staff prides themselve on giving back to the community they have served for so many decades. Through the years they have supported most schools, organizations and programs throughout Almaden. From the family: “In 1958, Jack and Anne Holder sold their Dairy Queen business in Roseburg, Oregon and moved their family to the “Valley of Hearts Delight” and opened Uncle John’s Pancake House in Santa Clara. Jack and Anne’s pancakes and waffle recipes made Uncle John’s one of the most popular coffee shops in the Bay Area. In 1967, Jack and Anne’s success continued when they opened the original “Holder’s Country Inn” in the old Town & Country Inn relocated to De Anza Boulevard in 1999. The Holder’s at El Paseo opened in 1981 and relocated to Saratoga Avenue in 1995. While managing their restaurants, Jack and Anne raised a family of six sons and a daughter, all of whom are still in the business. The Holder family traditions of friendly and attentive service, great food and reasonable prices continue to this day. We invite you to visit, sit back, relax, and we thank you for dining with us.” Sincerely, The Jack Holder Family

...Continued from PAGE 9 BEST PTs educate all patients in proper posture, mechanics and injury prevention, because they believe it is never too late to help patients improve. BEST has tailored a number of its classes specifically for youth such as Teen Boot Camp, a summer program that encourages physical activity to get into and stay in great shape; Youth Knee Injury Preventive Screenings, an assessment of the muscles most involved in common knee and leg injuries; as well as the popular BEST Core Class that safely leads individuals of all ages through a program that works every muscle in the body. All of the programs offer proven results. Participants learn applicable techniques that keep them productive and engaged in activities whether it be on the field, on the course, in the boardroom, classroom or traveling. At the same time, BEST works with many youth athletic organizations, including Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League, to screen and identify potential weaknesses in young athletes and teach proper stretching and strengthening exercises so that they avoid injury. As athletes and team coaches themselves, BEST PTs “strive to make sure everyone is healthy enough to engage in activities within their fitness level, so no one has to spend time on the sideline of life,” says Kathy. Kathy and the BEST staff are grateful for the support of the physicians, nurses, medical staff, patients and the community over the past 20 years, and they look forward to another decade or two. They would like to extend an invitation to the community for their 20th Anniversary Open House, Thursday, September 17th from 5:30-7:30pm at the Almaden facility. BEST Physical Therapy has clinics in Almaden Valley and Cupertino, which are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. five days a week.
