Kokkola – Gustavus Adolphus II, King of Sweden, established Kokkola (Gamlakarleby in Swedish) in 1620. Thanks to the Roos family of shipowners, the town became renown for ship-building and trade during the 1700’s and the 1800’s. Tar trade was also an important source of income in the Kokkola region during that time.

Since the 1900’s and up to date, Kokkola has evolved into the leading centre for trade and business in this area. At the same time, theatre and music have arisen as significant culture players. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra is one of the most important chamber orchestras in Europe. Kokkola offers annual festivals in opera, theatre, and many other domains. If you visit Kokkola at the time of the Venetian Festival, you will see splendid display of lights and fireworks.

Karleby Kokkola wurde im Jahr 1620 unter dem schwedischen Namen Gamlakarleby von König Gustav Adolf gegründet. Durch die Reederfamilie Roos wurde die Stadt im 18. und 19. Gleichzeitig ist im Bereich Theater und Musik ein reichhaltiges Kulturangebot entstanden. Das Kammerorchester von Mittelostbottnien ist heute eines der führenden Kammerorchester Europas. Neben Oper und Theater bietet Kokkola eine erhebliche Zahl von großen Veranstaltungen. Die Kokkola - VeToholampi neziade wird durch Illuminationen und Feuerwerke zu einem einmaligen Erlebnis. Larsmo • Luoto Luoto is a nice little seaside community. Larsmo, consisting of a myriad of islands, forms part of the beautiful archipelago. Larsmo is located between Kokkola and Jakobstad. It is famous for its beautiful scenery near the lakes and the coastline. It is easy to drive, bike, or boat here, crossing several bridges and locks.

Halsua Canoes can be hired from paddling clubs and you can explore the archipelago from the waterline. TerraMare is an excellent interactive exhibition teaching about the ongoing post-glacial land uprise of the Kvarken Archipelago. Larsmo is also the site of the largest embanked freshwater lake, Larsmosjön, in Finland.

Jakobstad • Pietarsaari Jakobstad was established by countess Ebba Brahe in 1652. She gave after P I E TA R Sthe A town A R I its I name JAKO B Sher TAlate E husband Jacob de la Gardie.

The town is renowned for it lively maritime traditions, e.g. exports of tar and timber. Ships built in Jakobstad sailed the oceans and the bark Hercules, for instance, was the first Finnish ship to sail around the world. The Jacobstads Wapen is a modern replica of an 18th century galleass and she sails and carries out chartered cruises in the summer months. Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland’s national poet, was born in Jakobstad. Also the present-day cultural life in Jakobstad is well worth noticing. There are specialized museum which provide very instructive tours, e.g. the Arctic Museum Nanoq and the Chicory Museum.

Jakobstad is also known as a town of parks and gardens. Visit Vicar Aspegren’s famous gardens at Rosenlund or the popular School Park botanical gardens, both situated in downtown Jakobstad. There are beaches and guest harbours within and outside the town area. Auch heute hat die Stadt ein reges Kulturleben. Hier finden sie Museen mit einer besonderen Ausrichtung, die lehrreiche Besichtigungen bieten; als Beispiel seien das arktische Museum Nanoq und das Zichorienmuseum genannt.

Jakobstad ist darüber hinaus eine Stadt der Parks und Gärten. Besuchen Sie den berühmten Nutzgarten Aspegrens Garten in Rosenlund oder den bekannten botanischen Schulgarten; beide sind im Stadtzentrum gelegen. It is a large municipality with 19 villages, all with a very green approach to life. There are many thriving dairy farms in the villages.

Nykarleby • Uusikaarlepyy Nykarleby is an idyllic little town at the mouth of the Lapuanjoki river. It was established in 1620, on the same date as Kokkola, as King Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden wanted to reinforce the seafaring and trading traditions of this region. Nykarleby is also known as the ”fairytale town” because it is the home town of the renowned Finnish fairytale writer, Z. Topelius. Kuddnäs, his childhood home, is among the oldest museums in our region. It is open from May until the end of August, and at other times by prior agreement. The Juthas battlefield memorial is a good place to learn more about the history of the 1808-1809 Fenno-Russian War. www.nykarleby.fi

Die Stadt Nykarleby ist eine idyllische Kleinstadt an der Mündung des Flusses Lapuanjoki. Die Stadt wurde im Jahr 1620 gegründet, am gleichen Tag wie Kokkola. König Gustav II Adolf wollte damit die Seefahrt und den Handel der Region stärken.

Nykarleby ist auch als ”Märchenstadt“ bekannt, da sie die Heimatstadt des Märchendichters Z. Topelius war. Kuddnäs, das Elternhaus von Topelius, zählt zu den ältesten Museen unserer Region. Tankar –The Light house island This popular sight (with over 10,000 visitors per summer) is located 17 km to the north-west of Kokkola. The barren island was a base for sealhunters and fishermen for centuries and later, an important landmark for seafarers. Juthbacka Market The Juthbacka Market is arranged annually in Nykarleby the last weekend but one in August. It is one of the biggest second-hand markets in Finland. Nearly 1000 vendors have all sorts of objects and bric-a-brac for sale, from vintage cars to porcelain. The market opens on Friday and continues until Saturday afternoon. Bosund Boating, Fishing & Hunting Museum

Bjärgas Homestead Farm and Museum

A unique little museum with links to the archipelago, located close to the waterfront and the road! The collection consists of peasant boats, fishing and hunting gear with links to the life on the islands in Larsmo.

There is also a typical island cottage and a smithy as well as granaries and salting huts in the area. The new exhibition hall is warm all the year round – a place to see interesting boat-building tools throughout the years and old-time boat motors, etc. Welcome also by boat, moor at the tourist pier!

The museum has permanent exhibitions of smallholder home, toys, technical aids, old-time utility articles, village grocery store from the 1950’s, Finland’s wars, ladies’ finery and the highlights of life, miniature models of old villages, shoemaker’s shop and milk processing. Annual summer exhibitions open in June – August. There are about twenty buildings in the museum area: the smithy, windmill, droft, wringer, island cottage, laundry, log drill, etc. Tasty herbal products for sale in the Christmas markets! In 2009-2010, a new building will be erected, including a meeting hall, modern kitchen, and toilets. Bjärgas Heimathof und Museum Auf dem Bjärgas Heimathof kann der Besucher sich mit den permanenten Ausstellungen bekannt machen: einen Kaufladen aus den 50er Jahren, der Kriegsgeschichte, der Frauenpracht und Feierlichkeiten des Lebens, Miniaturen der alten Dörfer, der Schusterwerkstatt und der Milchbehandlung. Sommerausstellungen im Juni – Augusti. Auf dem Museumsgelände gibt es etwa 20 Gebäude. From 1631 to 1848 Korpholmen was the site of a leper hospital, a hospital for the mentally ill and a poor house. Today there is a reconstruction of the church which once stood in this naturally beautiful area.

There is also an exhibition house where one can learn more about the history of the hospital. Visits must be arranged in advance.

Signegården

Nanoq – The Arctic Museum

Signegården is an attractive renovated meeting place dating from the 1700’s in the cultural village of Lappfors in Pedersöre. It is a special place to hold parties, meetings and conferences. Signegården can take groups of 10–60 people. Food and coffee are available.

Nanoq (meaning “polar bear” in Greenlandic) is Finland’s first museum of the Arctic and is modelled on a turf house in northern Greenland. There is equipment used in famous expeditions together with equipment for scientifi c research in the Arctic and Antarctic. Every summer there is an additional special exhibition. Opening times are daily 12–18 from 1.6.–31.8. Other times according to agreement.

Jakobstad Museum The Malm House (Malmska gården), on Storgatan 2 is the town museum and concentrates on seafaring, shipbuilding and the town culture.The outhouses have various themes such as a hairdresser’s and an old village shop. Nice souvenirs and bric-a-brac for sale in the museum shop.

The Tobacco storehouse, Jakobsgatan 9, houses the art and cultural exhibitions of the museum.

In the summer it is also possible to visit Runeberg’s Cottage and Westmansmor’s Cottage, both of which are closely linked with Finland’s national poet, Johan Ludvig Runeberg.

Das Stadtmuseum von Jakobstad Das Haus der Reederfamilie Malm, Storgatan 2, hat zwar seinen Schwerpunkt auf der Seefahrt, dem Schiffsbau und das Leben in der Stadt, bietet aber auch einen alten Dorfladen, ein Damenhaarsalong und Tante-Emma-Laden. Im Museumsshop finden Sie nette Andenken.

The Chicory Museum Finland’s one and only Chicory Museum is located at Alholmen in Jakobstad. This former chicory-coffee factory (from 1893) presents the chicory production process and its steps, the beginnings of Wilhelm Schauman’s industrial career, and gives an idea of industrial work in days gone by. There are new art exhibitions at the museum every July. The Chicory Museum is open in June and July, Tuesdays to Saturdays at 12-16. Free entry. Welcome!

Das Zichorienmuseum Das einzige Zichorienmuseum unseres Landes befindet sich in Alholmen, Jakobstad. In einer ehemaligen Zichorienfabrik (aus dem Jahre 1893) kann sich der Besucher über die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte bei der Zichorienherstellung informieren, etwas über die Anfänge der industriellen Tätigkeit von Wilhelm Schauman erfahren und erleben, wie Industriearbeit in der Vergangenheit aussah.

The School Park botanical gardens

In the centre of Jakobstad one can find oneself in a peaceful green oasis. Unexpected at this latitude, one can see a thousand types of plants growing here. The botanical gardens (laid out 1915-1932) are the result of a donation by the Schauman family to the memory of Elise and Victor Schauman. The School park has an area of approx. 1.35 hectares. The aim of the park is to promote the study of botany in the town schools and to “open and broaden the mind to the beauty of the world of plants, their wonders and uses”.

Skolparken - der botanische Garten Mitten im Zentrum von Jakobstad können Sie in eine grüne Oase eintauchen und dabei eine kleine Überraschung erleben.

Rund tausend Pflanzenarten machen aus dem botanischen Garten eine einzigartige Sehenswürdigkeit, besonders auf einem so nördlichen Breitengrad. Der botanische Garten ist das Ergebnis einer Schenkung der Familie Schauman und wurde zwischen den Jahren 1915 und 1932 zur Erinnerung an Elise und Victor Schauman angelegt. Der Park umfasst etwa 1,35 ha. Der Zweck des Gartens ist den Botanikunterricht in den Schulen zu fördern, aber auch unter der Bewölkerung “den Geist für die Schönheit, die Wunder und das Nutzen der Pflanzenwelt zu wecken und anzuregen.”

Kuddnäs Kuddnäs is the nineteenth century childhood home of writer Zacharias Topelius. Each room of the white main building, from the doctor’s room through the hall to the loft, all have their own story to tell. Take a walk in the park, pause a while at the gazebo and savour the sounds of the river and the birdsong. There is a cafÊ selling drinks and snacks, and handicrafts are available for sale. The museum is open to the public between May 15 and August 31, other times as agreed. Groups are asked to book in advance by telephone or e-mail. Welcome to Kuddnäs!

Strandis The Strandis marina, next to the beautiful nature of the Larsmo lake has a restaurant and the 7 Bridges Café with pizzeria, which are open every day through out the year.This is a good choice for groups. In the winter time there are seats for 80 people, and in the summer time for about 350. Fully licensed. In wintertime one can go for an unforgettable dip in the water in extra special surroundings, and in summer you can take a trip on M/S Gloskär, which takes groups for a sauna bath in the archipelago. In the summer time freshly smoked fish can be bought every day.There is also a store and a camping area with cabins in the same area. We are a multiservice facility right on the 7 Bridges Archipelago road.

Köpmanholmen – The pearl of the archipelago Köpmanholmen is a recreational area embedded in the beautiful nature, within rowing distance of Larsmo mainland. The island has plenty of space for outdoor activities; swimming, volleyball, canoeing, hiking and more.

There is a café on Köpmanholmen, and an advance-order restaurant which serves everything from coffee and cakes to three-course dinners. The café can easily be divided into smaller rooms suitable for meetings or private occasions. There is also an attractive sauna with an open fireplace room suitable for corporate entertainment or where smaller groups can choose to eat or meet.

The Exhibition of Land Rise at Terra Mare Land elevation, or land rise is a remarkable phenomenon which is explained in the unique exhibition at Terra Mare on Köpmanholmen. The display, together with the nature trail and observation tower illustrate how land elevation has affected and continues to affect our nature.There is a conference room (for 25 people) with modern conferencing equipment.

Köpmanholmen is in the Larsmo archipelago, reached by a rowing boat (300 m) or in 5 minutes by water taxi M/S Wilma from Sonamo rowing boat harbour. Signposted from Road 749, about 6 km.

Köpmanholmen - die Perle der Schärenwelt Köpmanholmen ist ein Freizeitgelände in der wunderschönen Schärenwelt von Larsmo, vom Festland mit dem Ruderboot leicht zu erreichen. Auf der Insel gibt es viel Platz für allerlei Aktivitäten an der frischen Luft, sowie Schwimmen, Volleyball, Paddeln, Wandern und viel mehr. Auf der Insel gibt es ein Cafe-Restaurant mit großer Veranda, wo Kaffee und Kuchen, aber auch festliche Menüs serviert werden.

Ein Raum für Meetings und private Veranstaltungen kann hier leicht P E D abgetrennt E R S Ö R Ewerden. In der Kaminecke der Sauna können sich kleinere Gruppen beim Geschäftsgespräch und Essen treffen.

Landhebungsausstellung Terra Mare Die Landhebungsaustellung Terra Mare auf Köpmanholmen zeigt das sonderbare Phänomen der Landhebung in sowohl früheren Zeiten, wie auch heute, und wirft sogar ein Blick auf die Zukunft.

Im Ausstellungsraum, auf dem Naturpfad und dem Aussichtsturm sehen Sie, welche Einfl üsse die Landhebung auf die Natur hat. Im Anschluss an der Austellung gibt es einen mit moderner Technik ausgestattenen Tagungsraum für 25 Personen. Köpmanholmen liegt in den Schären von Larsmo, ab Sonamo Ruderbootshafen 300 m mit Ruderboot 5 Minuten mit dem Taxiboot M/S Wilma. Bitte Ausschilderung folgen ab der 749-Straße ca. 6 Km.

Canoeing gives a fantastic opportunity to get out in nature on your and nature’s terms. In Scandinavia, we have a unique freedom, called the right of public access to the wilderness. But this right also requires respect and consideration when moving in land or on water owned by someone else. The canoeing excursions are a lovely experience. No engine, no sound – and it is you who determine the pace and degree of difficulty.

Paddeln ist eine großartige Möglichkeit, die Natur ganz individuell erleben zu können. Dank des allgemeinen Nutzungsrechts („Allemansrätten” – siehe auch unter: allemansrätten) bieten die skandinavischen Länder einen großzügigen Zugang zur Natur. Dieses Recht verpflichtet im Gegenzug den Nutzer, fremdes Eigentum schonend und pfleglich zu behandeln.

Paddelfahrten gewähren herrliche Naturerlebnisse. Keine Motoren- oder sonstige Fremdgeräusche – und Sie selbst bestimmen über Fahrt und Schwierigkeiten im Gelände.

Rivers, brooks, and lakes and the islands out in the sea provide excellent starting-points for the various routes. The ample waterways in Terjärv and Nedervetil are superb as canoeing routes, and the central Lake Larsmosjön is large enough for days and nights of adventure.

Many of our rivers, e.g. Esse or Kronoby rivers, are so-called high-water rivers, and the rivers are especially high in the spring and there are several rapids then for the more demanding adventure canoeist. Depending on the water level, the opportunities and adventures vary!

A tour along the Lapua/Nykarleby river in Jeppo is a scenic route to lovely nature and interesting landscape. The rivers offer numerous possibilities and combinations. Paddling your canoe deep down on the river bed takes you to a completely new and enchanting world and lets your imagination fly. The worries and hustle and bustle of everyday life disappear.

You are close to the basics. If it is not windy, you can paddle down to Nykarleby in a couple of hours or slowly glide there and back between Silvast and Gröta rapids. The river forks out and if you want to paddle round Holmen, it is a stretch of about 14 km and takes about 5-8 hours.

CANOEING ON YOUR OWN – OR WITH A GUIDE! Are you a beginner? If you are, we recommend that you let one of our adventure guides or canoeing clubs teach you the basics, in order to make your canoeing tour as pleasant and safe as possible! In addition, the guides offer many excellent extra services which will make your P E Dadventure E R S Ö Rand E experience even more memorable. - Buy a safe canoeing package, inclusive of all the gear!

We will update all the canoeing maps within the 7 Bridges Archipelago in 2010, together with local and regional canoeing societies and clubs. As soon as they are ready, they will be placed in our new information portal at www.7broar.com. We offer you new suggestions for good canoeing routes with various exciting themes – more demanding out on the sea and easier, but just as interesting, routes for lakes, rivers, and brooks. We will also update the landing and break sites and general information! It will also contain a presentation of our adventure guides and canoeing clubs!

Kleine und große Flüsse, Binnenseen und die dem Festland vorgelagerten Inselgruppen sind ausgezeichnete Ausgangspunkte für verschiedene Paddelausflüge. Die sich aneinander reihenden Seen in Terjärv und Nedervetil eignen sich ausgezeichnet für Kanufahrten; der zentrale Larsmo-See (Larsmosjön) bietet tagelange Abenteuer in der Natur. Zahlreiche Flüsse (z. B. die Esse oder der Kronoby-Fluss) verändern ihren Wasserstand im Frühjahr beträchtlich und verwandeln sich in reißende Ströme, die nur für geübte Paddler geeignet sind.

Je nach Wasserstand wechseln hier Möglichkeiten und Abenteuer! Eine Fahrt im Lappo- und Nykarleby-Fluss bei Jeppo ist mit hinreißenden Ausblicken verbunden. Hier gibt es unzählige Möglichkeiten zum Entdecken einer unberührten Natur. Eine bezaubernde, unbekannte und die Phantasie anregende Welt erschließt sich dem Betrachter. Alltagssorgen und Stress lösen sich in Wohlbefinden auf. Man spürt den Puls des Lebens.

Man kann in einigen Stunden bis Nykarleby paddeln oder zwischen den Stromschnellen des Silvast und Grötas kreuzen. Der Fluss teilt sich in zwei Flussläufe; das Paddeln um die Insel Holmen ist eine Strecke von ca. 14 km und dauert fünf bis acht Stunden.
