MINEOLA LIBRARY - 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Did you know that the original Mineola Library opened on February 2, 1922? Our 100th Birthday is fast approaching! We will be celebrating with events throughout 2022, starting with a birthday party on

Celebrating 100 Years of Library Service • Special Edition Library Cards: To celebrate the 100th Anniversary, the library will be offering all of our patrons the chance to obtain our new 100th Anniversary Library Card. Please see the Circulation Desk for more details. • Local History Tab: To honor our upcoming anniversary on 2/2/22, we will be adding a Local History tab to our website. Soon, you will be able to read about the early history of the library, access a local history “encyclopedia,” and more! The new feature will go live on February 1, 2022! • Stories Needed!: Help us celebrate the library’s birthday by sharing your stories, photos, or what you love about the library. A box will be at the Circulation Desk, or, you can email the stories/ pictures to jpetrowski@nassaulibrary.org.

Letters to Santa

Santa is very busy at the North Pole preparing for the holiday season. He has asked the library to collect his letters for him. The library will make sure he gets your letters. Each child will be given a personalized letter back from Santa. Please have them in by December 13th to ensure that he receives your letter!!! The mailbox will be by the front desk.

Online Program Registration Now Available! You can now register for some programs through our online event calendar on our website. Simply go to our website (mineolalibrary.info), choose “Events & Services” from the menu, and choose “Event Calendar.” If the event is going to have online registration, you will see a “register” button with the number of seats remaining or a waitlist button directly below the event. If the “register” button is there, click that button and follow the prompts to enter your information. If the registration button is not there, please refresh your screen. Once you enter your information, press “SEND” and a window will pop up confirming your registration or if you are on the waiting list. Please note that for many of our programs you will need to have a valid Mineola library card to register, so please have that on hand.

On September 6, 1901, the 25th President of the United States William McKinley was shot on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. McKinley’s health would lead the country and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt down a turbulent path for the next 8 days, resulting in the inauguration of Roosevelt on September 14th. Join us for an overview of the events leading up to the swearing in of Theodore Roosevelt.

The concept is simple. Read a book (any book), on your own time (there is no “finish by” date), to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your child starts kindergarten. Mark each book you read on a recording log. As you and your child reach reading milestones, bring your completed log to the Children’s Desk for a small prize. Pick up a log at the Children’s Desk.

To volunteer, sign up at the Children’s desk for an appointment. One-hour appointment per volunteer activity only. Volunteer/Community credit will be given as a certificate. Please notify Miss Vivian the Librarian when your volunteering is complete and you need your certificate. Bookmark Crafts Volunteers –Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 help make bookmarks to be given to children getting their first library card, as part of a welcome-to-thelibrary gift bag. Cards For Kids Volunteers – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will make cards for hospitalized children. Cards For Seniors Volunteers – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will create cards that for senior citizens/the elderly who are isolated. Cards For Soldiers & Veterans Volunteers – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will make cards for soldiers and veterans. Fix-It Volunteers – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 help to clean discs, tablet screens, and bring any scratched or damaged materials to a librarian. POLAR BEAR POND (WITH PENGUIN!)
