Materials For Blind and Visually Impaired

Tiny Art Show: Happy Birthday Mineola Library! Adults, teens, and children are invited to display their artistic talents to celebrate the Library’s 100th birthday. Here’s How to Participate: • Beginning April 11, pick up a tiny canvas kit at either the Adult or Children’s Services desks. You will need to show your Mineola library card to receive a kit. One kit per person. Our supplies will be very limited. • Using the supplies provided, or, your own, create a scene using the theme of “Happy Birthday Mineola Library!” • Once your painting is dry, fill out the entry card provided in your kit and drop it off at the Adult or Children’s desks by June 6. • Our tiny art show will take place during the months of July and August.

The Mineola Library is now partners with The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, a branch of the New York Public Library. The Heiskell Library provides free accessible reading material for patrons who are blind, visually impaired, or are otherwise physically unable to read standard print. Heiskell Library offers materials to borrow in a wide range of formats, including braille, talking books, and magazines, for users of all ages, as well as players and apps. If you know someone who could benefit from these services and materials, please contact Library Director Charles Sleefe at midirector@nassaulibrary.org and we will set up an appointment and begin providing materials for them.

Note: Programs marked with an * require advance registration. ADULT PROGRAM POLICIES Programs in this section are restricted to Adults ages 18 and over, unless otherwise indicated. All programs require advance sign-up except for concerts, movies and theatrical productions. Sign up may be done online, in person or by phone at 516-7468488 ext. 2 EXCEPT if there is a fee involved, then registration may only be done in person. There are no Facebook signups for events. High-demand programs may be open to Mineola cardholders first, with a later registration date for non-Mineola cardholders, space permitting. Registered participants must be present when the program is scheduled to begin. After 10 minutes, your spot may be given to someone on the waiting list. – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 borrow a new tween or teen book with their library card, show the librarian the due date slip, read the book in the children’s room for 1 hour & give first impressions by filling out a review form. Virtual Option: Email pictures of due date slip & completed review form or a 2-3 minute video of your first impressions to librarian for the library’s social media.

BOOKMARK CRAFTS VOLUNTEERS –Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 help make bookmarks to be given to children getting their first library card, as part of a welcome-tothe-library gift bag. CARDS FOR KIDS VOLUNTEERS – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will make cards for hospitalized children. CARDS FOR SENIORS VOLUNTEERS – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will create cards that for senior citizens/the elderly who are isolated. CARDS FOR SOLDIERS & VETERANS VOLUNTEERS – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 will make cards for soldiers and veterans.

FIX-IT VOLUNTEERS – Teen volunteers entering grades 6-12 help to clean discs, tablet screens, and bring any scratched or damaged materials to a librarian.
