PATCH ADAMS OUTLET The objective of the design 8 comprehensive studio was to design a free health clinic for patch Adams in a disadvantaged area of northwest Philadelphia, PA. Patch Adams is a doctor and clown that has a different outlook on America’s healthcare system. Student were given a brief background on the clients needs, site and a rough program. From that we had to develop a design for a health clinic, that would go along with Patch Adam’s agenda as well as meet the comprehensive needs of the studio. in groups of two, we worked together in all the stages of design, from initial concept to complete design development. This included envelope, structure, HVAC, lighting incorporation as well as code and ada compliant plans. In addition we also had to work towards a goal of designing a net zero building. From the beginning of the studio we based our designs on passive sustainable strategies such as orientation, thermal mass, natural ventilation, water collection as well as active systems such as solar panels.
project intro
00
Patch Adams is a doctor, clown and social activist who has devoted his life to changing the American health care system. Throughout the years he found that most people he saw were lonely, had low self-esteem, and were overall unhappy. Adams believed in non-pharmaceutical treatments for mental health and believes that laughter, love and creativity are most important to a healthy lifestyle. He wants patients to feel “excited that they belong to something called community.
Our intent is to provide a creative outlet for the community in order to improve mental wellbeing. As a result we added art therapy programs in addition to the clinic and community spaces. By providing programs focused on art, we hope to get the community involved in activities that will provide alternatives to proscribing medicine while at the same time having fun. The community will be part of the clinic because all the art projects will be displayed throughout the clinic and landscape.

Outlet [Dramatic & Inspiring] Inspire people to want to participate in the art activities to help improve their mental well-being. Connection between the art therapy and wellness and community. The Outlet also serves as a place to display the patient’s work.
Clinic
[Warm & Comforting]
To create a comforting atmosphere while patients are waiting long hours to be seen by a doctor.
Community [Open & Flexible] to allow the users to not feel judged when they are involved in the art activities, and to help the feel free to express themselves. Part of Art therapy involves the interaction between therapist and patient. The patient needs to feel free to express themselves through images and color so they can convey what they are feeling to the therapist and in return the therapist can provide more assistance.

We chose to locate our building on W. Moreland Street to be closer to the community and as a gateway from the urban to more natural landscape. By placing the building on the Northern most part of the site it allowed the rest of the site to get more exposure to sun. We have our main paths connecting Allegheny to clinic and west Moreland street .

In Elevations vary depended on direction and adjacency. The concrete is exposed more on North because sun shading is not necessary and to express the material. The curtain walls around the outlet carry the same mullion proportions as the outlet and have colored glass panels that relate to the color corresponding in the landscape. When the sun shines through the color will be cast on the floor and walls and hopefully evoke the emotion in the users of the space.

our first structure plans show a mix of steel and concrete columns, along with the icc and glulams. originally we intended for the outlet to be framed with a different material for the contrast. in our final plan we switched the steel columns with concrete for consistency but still would have the columns painted a dark grey to keep the initial concept. We also utilized our elevator shaft as a core element integrated in the structure to eliminate the number of columns needed.

structure
PATCH ADAMS OUTLET our main structural materials are icc panel bearing walls, concrete beam & slab floor system, and glulam framed roof. The panels are 4’ wide which helped generate our structural grid. Each modular, 20 ‘, is made up of 5 panels. However with width of each portion varies based on program demands.

The roof undulates between two different heights to create variation along the south and north facade. We wanted to break the horizontally into a smaller scale to relate to the neighboring residential buildings. The outlet roof is flat to distinguish it from the rest of the building and highlight the entrance.

PATCH ADAMS OUTLET The roof is glulam framed to bring a sense of warmth in the space and help people feel relaxed. Most rooms on the second floor have an exposed ceiling so it was important to contrast the other industrial materials. The support and windows for the roof are angled perpendicular to the angle of the rafters for support.

When developing our hvac system, we decided to have 2 mechanical rooms, one for each wing of our building. The primary reason was to conserve energy. the less area it has to serve the less stress on the equipment. With each floor divided into two zone, we have 3 thermostats within those zones due to the program activity, and occupant comfort in each space. We chose a forced air system because throughout the building we wanted the ducts to be exposed or semi- exposed, except for in the clinic.

the lighting in each space is based on the character of each space. In our clinic we chose diffuse lighting to make patients feel at ease. The outlet lights are placed behind ceiling baffles that break up the light and create contrast.

during the second half of the semester we focused more on the primary care portion of our building. we visited fpcm in north philadelphia, university of pennsylvania’s clinic, and met with nurse practictioners. these experiences helped us gather advise and allowed us to develop more efficient plans for our clinic portion of the building. among the comments were having offices for staff, more storage and adding a lab. we currently have 6 exam rooms and 3 practioners offices. we switched our flooring from cork to a bio-linoleum that resembles the cork. we learned that there is alot of waiting time for patients and wanted to make their experience more pleasant. our louvres are also operable to allow views to the landscape while patients are waiting, and privacy during exams.

We organized the site by divisions of color to evoke different emotions in people based on the program. Near the daycare and playground we have yellow plants to evoke happiness and energy, whereas the landscape is purple around the art studios to promote creativity. We located a farmer market and sculpture garden near Allegheny to attract attention to the site from the busier street. Students work would be on display in the sculpture garden and the community would be a part of the site. We wanted at certain times of year to just see distinct layers of color looking up towards the clinic from Allegheny.

PATCH ADAMS OUTLET The painting stations in the site also serve as gathering areas for the community. Around the building is the playground and varying heights and colors of meadows, using local plants and phytoremediation plants to help reduce amount of soil remediation needed. At the stations there is a radius of soil remediation, closer to the people.

We oriented the roof toward the South to capture more natural daylight into our spaces. The roof overhangs 4’ to block the summer sun from entering but allowing the winter sun in to help warm the space.

our initial plan was based on program adjacencies. the depth of the building became an issue, so we decided to add a second floor, and also create 4 shifting volumes to make up the plan.
we wanted to use our roof form to maximize daylight and create variation along the facade. We also added a green-roof on the one story portion.
we changed our roof to orient west to create a dramatic profile along the south and north facade.

to cut square footage we got rid of the southern portion of the building with the green-roof. we also changed the orientation of our roof to south to maximize daylight.
we continued to trim our floor plan by one module to decrease cost.
finally to meet a budget of 4.5 mill, we cut one more module off, equally 1000 sf, and were able to come in under budget.
