SITE CONTEXT OVERVIEW The site is located in an urban community [residential area]. At the location of the site, there is an existing building. Previously, the building was an elementary school building.
EXISTING BUILDING The school opened in 1890 as an elementary school in Philadelphia and was named after George W. Childs [American publisher who owned the Philadelphia Public Ledger newspaper]. In 2010, the School Reform Commission voted on a resolution to close the 116-yearold building and moved the 605 students, from pre-K to 8th grade, into nearby Barratt Middle School for the fall. They maintained that the Childs building is unsafe and would be too expensive to repair or replace.
HISTORY Since the building is 116-year-old, it became a historic preserved building; which means the exterior envelope of the building has to remain untouched, but there is an option to tear down the rest of the massing behind that envelope, depend on the proposed projects’ needs/program.

Locating the classrooms and kids activity at the southern side of the site, where the sun is mostly, to keep the kids and the students active, and exposed to natural daylight. Locating car parking underground, to create a safe environment for kids. Locate bike share/parking on top of the building, closer to the daycare, to take the bicyclists/parents through a journey path throughout the building to explore/discover the spaces.

GEARS STUDY PROGRAM:
CONCEPT: Through a study was done on the parts and pieces of the bicycles (how they connect/ move), then a study of the gears The design intent is based on a study of the parts and pieces of the bicycle and how they connect together. Then zooming in closer to discover how gears spin and work. The only way for it to spins is through connection and interlocking with some other gears. The study of these mechanics became the form generator for the design. The main gear of the program is the transit hub. The gear of the transit hub will spins through its connection to other programmatic elements in the project. 07
DAYCARE
-Educational center and career building for the unemployed by providing them classes on how to maintain bikes and giving them opportunities in the field of mechanics, and help them to find a job in the field. Day-care center to take care of single parents’ kids, so their parents can find the time for their jobs. Transit hub for commuters is going to be an opportunity for parents who live outside the neighborhood to commute with their kids on their way to work.

TRANSIT HUB
RETAIL
In response to the cultural conditions of the site, the proposed project will serve the needs of the community through its programmatic elements; by creating jobs opportunities, alternative/sustainable means of transportation, childcare center, retail stores, a gathering space for the neighbors/ commuters to meet with friends/make new friends, and giving a new identity to the community.

SECTIONS STUDIES CIRCULATIONS Sectional study on vertical and horizontal circulations within the spaces. The circulations study is looking at how to connect all the programmatic elements within the spaces; also extending out the circulation to the neighborhood -[to connect/link the program to the rest of the neighborhood/city] in response to the needs, filling the gaps, and to unit the project with the community.

PROJECT NARRATIVE
The is a transit hub that is serving the neighborhood of newbold and also commuters and tourists all over the city Philadelphia. The center is not only serving transportation needs, but also it is serving other needs and solving problems in the neighborhood and the city. Some of the problems that exist in the neighborhood are high unemployment rates, single parents with kids who can’t afford daycares expenses, and students dropping out of schools. As a result of all these problems other problems generated such as high poverty rates, people can’t afford cars or transportations expenses, and high percentages rely on carpooling. Also some other problems exist in the city are streets congestions, safety issues, and sustainability issues.
cycling gears center
The is proposing solutions to fix these issues through its program. The program will serve many needs in the neighborhood and the city. The daycare will serve kids to help their parents to find the time for their jobs (especially the parents who work overnight shifts), also will serve the commuters’ kids to travel on daily basis with their parents on their way to work, and the transit hub will decrease the street congestions and limited parking issues in the city. The hotel will host the tourists and give them guidance throughout their stay in the city. The training cycling center will increase the awareness to some sustainable transportation alternative through its classes; also the center will create/provide new jobs opportunities for the unemployed in the field of bicycle mechanics.
design intent
The is based on a study of the parts and pieces of the bicycle and how they connect together. Then zooming in closer to discover how gears spin and work. The only way for a gear to spin is through its connection and interlocking with some other gears. The study of these mechanics became the form generator for the design. The main gear of the program is the transit hub. The gear of the transit hub will spins through its connection to the hotels’ gear, and as the hotel slows down in the evening the daycare will keep it spinning overnight, until the training and retail center spin up again during the morning time.
“spinning gears”
The concept of the will be fulfilled through the transparency of the building’s skin. The users and visitors will be able to see all the activities that are “spinning” and taking place in the program, whether they are inside or outside the building.
