It’s the most wonderful time of the year to register for City of West Kelowna recreation programs. With hundreds of programs at your fingertips, the 2020 Winter Recreation Guide has something for everyone. Council is very excited that the much-anticipated Multi Sport Centre is now open and ready for use. With new programs like Drop In Soccer, space for afterschool program, and fitness classes. As well, we have moved our popular Summer Park Play Days inside with our new Dome Play Days, Tuesday and Thursday morning. It is great to be able to run this program through the

seasons now with this wonderful facility. We would like to thank the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association for providing funding; because of the BCRPA, the City is pleased to be able to expand programming on Family Day. With the weather cooling, now is a good time to try out some new art and cooking classes the City is offering this winter. In the fall, we offered Persian cooking and we are excited for you to try the Art of Indian Cooking, with a wide variety of cuisine and plenty of spices, Indian cuisine is sure to please your palate. West Kelowna Council looks forward to seeing you at the Winter Light Up on Friday, December 6 on Brown Road from 5:00-8:00pm and of course Skate with Santa on Sunday, December 1 at the Mount Boucherie Community Centre, check www.westkelownacity.ca for schedule. Sounds like a fun family weekend!

WINTER 2020

According to Statistics Canada, four out of five adults between the ages of 30-50, will experience at least one episode of back pain that will affect their ability to work and participate in physical activity. To optimize spinal health, and maintain our Back for the Future, we need to strengthen all of the core muscles in a balanced manner. During this 2-hour hands-on workshop participants will: • Identify the true “core muscles”. Did you know your pelvic floor and diaphragm are part of your core? • Learn how to identify common postural dysfunction and how to apply corrective exercises. • Take home a repertoire of safe and effective core conditioning exercises you can start using immediately. You will have the opportunity to play actual hands. All course material will be supplied.

Goren was replaced by Standard American and now Standard American is being replaced by 2/1. Have you noticed how many intermediate and advanced players use this system now instead of SAYC? Many bridge teachers are using 2/1 for their novice classes because this bidding system, overall, tends to be more accurate resulting in improved results. It is not a difficult transition from S.A. to 2/1 and Larry’s easy to understand booklet is great guide on how to use 90% of the 2/1 system. Even if you do not intend on switching systems, attending this course will help you defend and bid more effectively against teams who do use it. The textbook is mandatory at a cost of $20 or it can be purchased as an eBook through Amazon for $9.99.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

For further details contact the City of West Kelowna Recreation and Culture Department at 778-797-8800 or Peachland Recreation 250-767-2547

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.
