WELCOME

Welcome to the St Paul’s Events Programme for Summer Term 2019. I have received a good deal of positive feedback about the range and variety of opportunities for parents (current and former), staff, Old Paulines and friends to return to the school for talks, or to catch up in the city over wine or to network at one of our professional events.

Nearly 18 months ago, we launched the St Paul’s Community programme with the ambition of invigorating and engaging parents, staff, Old Paulines and friends and creating opportunities for the community to connect. I am so pleased to have met many of you and to have understood your individual connections to St Paul’s.

As the reconstruction of the senior school nears completion, we are shifting our attention to the school’s principal strategic goal of widening access and increasing the scale of bursary support with the launch in May of the Shaping our Future campaign. This will require support across the community if we are to realise our ambitious goals and so I look forward to sharing more details at events this term. I hope that you will join us in shaping the future of St Paul’s.

This term we bring you even more opportunities to join us and meet each other in the community programme. A few highlights include professional events at UBS and Freshfields, events in Toronto and New York and a drinks reception at Henley. We are also looking forward to seeing many of you at our biennial Summer Festival on 30 June, which will be an afternoon of music, games, great street food and a variety of drinks, including specially brewed Old Pauline Ale (OPA). So please put this in your diaries now!

Professor Mark Bailey High Master

We look forward to welcoming you to an event this term. Ellie Sleeman Director of Development and Engagement

The Lord Burghley Trophy Saturday 18 May All-day Thames Valley Athletics Centre St Paul’s School Athletics Club will be competing for the Lord Burghley Trophy, named after David Burghley who won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Summer Olympics. This competition has been held annually at Eton College since 2001. The Lord Burghley Trophy itself began life as a champagne bucket that originated from The Grand Hotel in Brighton after the 1984 bombing of the Conservative Party Conference and recalls the scene in Chariots of Fire when Lord Lindsay trained by placing a flute of champagne on each hurdle as an incentive not to knock the hurdles over. Last year St Paul’s Athletics Club came 2nd overall with the Seniors finishing 2nd, Inters 1st and the Juniors 4th with a superb team effort and a new school record set by Philip Kastner in the 100m hurdles. All-day Henley-on-Thames

The 2019 Junior Prize Giving ceremony will celebrate the successes of the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Forms of St Paul’s School. Parents of prizewinners are invited to attend for this special evening and join guests following the event for a drinks reception.

St Paul’s School 1st VIII will be competing in the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the most prestigious rowing regatta in the world, Henley Royal Regatta. Be sure to also look out for Old Paulines competing for their UK and USA universities at Henley; more information about the crews and race times will become available closer to the event. AUGUST 2019

School

St Paul’s Christian Union Summer House Party Monday 5 – Thursday 15 August All-day Worth School, West Sussex Paulines have enjoyed the Christian Union summer holidays, or ‘house parties’, for 100 years. Hundreds of Old Paulines look back on these holidays as among the most treasured memories of their time at St Paul’s as a place to build a community where boys can learn about the Christian faith in a friendly, all-inclusive and pressure-free environment. This is an excellent way for boys starting St Paul’s in August 2019 to create some great friendships before they have even started school. All Paulines, including those about to start in August 2019, and those who have just finished the Upper Eighth, are welcome. Audience

Moonlight

By Harold Pinter – Directed by Christian Anthony

Wednesday 21 – Saturday 24 August 7.30pm Lyric Studio, Hammersmith Andy, an ailing, foul-mouthed patriarch, is desperate for reconciliation with his two estranged sons. Haunted by the ghostly presence of his dead daughter Bridget and the very real presence of his irascible wife Bel, the dying Andy muses on guilt, lost loves and his own mortality. Pinter’s final fulllength play, performed by a cast of senior actors, is an elegiac meditation on family, shot through with raucous wit.
