It is almost two years since the formal launch of the St Paul’s Community programme. I am very grateful to all those who have contributed to its conspicuous success by organising activities, providing venue spaces, offering guidance and, of course, participating in events. In May we also launched the Shaping our Future campaign. It was a pleasure to meet so many people at the various events and to hear the support for the campaign in general and the Bursary Fund in particular. I look forward to building its momentum this term, and hope you will find something stimulating and engaging in the Autumn programme to encourage you to participate in the school community. From wine tasting, masterclasses in Philosophy and Ancient Greek, to the annual Thomas Gresham Quiz as well as a chance to hear the boys predict the winner of the Booker Prize. This has been an enjoyable day in the past and a chance for Old Paulines to re-establish contact with each other. Meet at the school gate on Lonsdale Road for a walk along the towpath to Barnes Bridge, returning via Hammersmith Bridge. The Parents’ Walking Group meets regularly during term time for walks of about an hour and half, usually by the river, in Richmond Park or Hyde Park.

7.30pm Milton Studio, St Paul’s School Andy, an ailing, foul-mouthed patriarch, is desperate for reconciliation with his two estranged sons. Haunted by the ghostly presence of his dead daughter Bridget and the very real presence of his irascible wife Bel, the dying Andy muses on guilt, lost loves and his own mortality. Pinter’s final full-length play is an elegiac meditation on family, shot through with raucous wit, here performed by a senior cast of actors fresh from a run at the Lyric Theatre Studio.

The evening will involve speeches followed by dinner provided and served by existing parents. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet parents and teachers from your son’s year.

US University Basics is an annual presentation by the Head of US Universities. This event is for Sixth Form and new Lower Eighth Parents interested in learning what US universities have to offer and what the US Universities team at St Paul’s School does to support students applying to the United States. This is an introductory presentation to help parents decide whether or not the US system is a good fit for your son. Students are welcome to attend. Please note that for Lower Eighth parents who are already knowledgeable about the US system, there is a Lower Eighth parent meeting in the spring term.
This is a meeting and reception with the Head of US Universities for Upper Eighth parents whose sons are in the process of applying to university in the United States.

This extremely popular annual event is run by the Parents’ Group and is an opportunity for the new Fourth Form and Lower Eighth Form parents to meet each other, the Parents’ Group Committee and Senior staff. The evening begins at 6.30pm with a drinks reception in Founder’s Court followed by supper in the School Dining Room at 7.15pm.
Our musicians join forces with St Paul’s Girls’ School for the annual Joint Concert. The repertoire will include Elgar’s Give Unto the Lord, Stanford’s Te Deum in B Flat and Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony (also known as the Pathétique Symphony), as well as a new choral piece written by Bernard Hughes.

Upper Eighth Form Parents’ Coffee and Exhibition Visit Chihuly: Reflections on Nature Friday 13 September 10.00am Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Artist Dale Chihuly’s stunning glass sculptures transform Kew Gardens into a contemporary outdoor gallery, making this exhibition a feast for the eyes. We’ll meet at the café at the Victoria Gate entrance to Kew Gardens for a coffee and then wander through the gardens, taking in Chihuly’s extraordinary works. Allow one and a half hours for the walk. The standard entrance fee to Kew Gardens (£16.50) includes the exhibition. Tickets can be bought on the day or online in advance to avoid queuing.

1st XV 60 Years On Reunion Lunch Saturday 14 September 12 noon St Paul’s School Paddy McCowen’s 1958 and John Cooper’s 1959 1st XVs are meeting for a 60-years-on reunion lunch on 14 September ahead of the current 1st XV’s match against Abingdon. The 1959 team had Peter Stagg playing in the second row. Peter is the most capped international player educated at St Paul’s. He played 28 times for Scotland between 1965 and 1970 and played for the British Lions on their 1968 tour of South Africa.

Former teacher and headmaster Dick Moore is a qualified Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor and has a passionate interest in adolescent development and emotional wellbeing. A truly engaging presenter, he has wide experience of working with young people. His lecture to parents will encompass emotional wellbeing, anxiety and stress, self-help and resilience, as well as tips for sound mental health in teenagers.
German-Japanese pianist Caterina Grewe has performed to great critical acclaim throughout the UK, continental Europe and Asia, has collaborated with many top conductors and has won numerous prizes at world-renowned piano competitions. This concert, which will include works by Schumann, Schubert-Liszt and Liszt, is in aid of The Amber Trust which helps blind and partially sighted children across the UK who have a talent or love for music.

Alumni and Parent Cycling Club Launch Friday 20 September 6.30pm St Paul’s School
We invite all members of the St Paul’s community with an interest in finance to join us for the next Finance Network event. This meeting will be hosted by Hambro Perks, a venture capital firm that helps build global companies, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. Dominic Perks, Co-Founder, CEO and St Paul’s parent will speak about the journey of a founder and hosts the evening alongside George Davies (19982003), Partner and Old Pauline.
Join us for the launch of the first St Paul’s Cycling Club, a social and friendly cycling network for parents and alumni. Riders are invited to meet at school for a ride to Richmond Park and back to followed by dinner at School. The ride will be led by Daniel Loy of International Cycling Executives and supported by Hugh Roberts (1969-74), Chief Executive of the SweetSpot, the organiser of the Tour of Britain, The Women’s Tour and Ride London. The ride will be resourced with a number of support cars, but attendees are asked to bring road bikes and personal hydration needs.

The Harvest Festival will be held in the school hall followed by coffee or tea and homemade treats in the St Paul’s Juniors Conference Room. All St Paul’s Juniors Lower First to Upper Second Year parents are welcome to attend.
The Parents’ Christian Prayer Group meet twice a term and prayers are offered mainly for the pupils, staff, events within the school as well as the whole school community. Our informal meeting includes coffee, a reading and prayers. We also hold an annual dinner at the school, which is a wonderful opportunity to meet members of staff who attend. There is no formal membership; everyone is welcome to attend any of our meetings.

One of the world’s most celebrated photographers, Cornel Lucas (1920-2012) enjoyed a career at the forefront of photography for over 70 years. Photo Noir will fill our gallery space with gorgeous images of the stars Lucas worked with in Hollywood and the UK from the 1940s onwards. The Thomas Gresham Bursary Fund was founded in 2017 by pupils in the Upper Eighth Form, with the aim of raising money to enable a boy to study at St Paul’s. To continue their success, the reins have been handed to successive groups of Upper Eighth pupils and they are bringing back the quiz to kick off this year’s fundraising. Join us for a challenging and entertaining evening for a cause integral to the St Paul’s Community.

St Paul’s Masterclass: Philosophy, an Introduction Monday 30 September 6.30pm St Paul’s School St Paul’s teacher Phil Gaydon presents an introduction to Philosophy, inviting the St Paul’s community to explore and debate a number of topics from the fields of ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics and epistemology. This two hour class will act as a taster session ahead of a longer Philosophy series taking place in the spring term. The session will have a relaxed and informal atmosphere and include refreshments so please do come along. No previous study of the subject is required. Audience

St Paul’s Juniors Pastoral Information Evening with Natasha Devon Tuesday 1 October 6.30pm School Hall, St Paul’s Juniors Natasha Devon is a writer and activist. She tours schools and colleges throughout the UK, delivering talks as well as conducting research on mental health, body image, gender and social equality. Natasha regularly speaks in Parliament and gives evidence to the Education and Health Select Committees, representing the interests of teenagers and teachers. In 2015 she was awarded an MBE for her services to young people. Natasha is a patron for the charity No Panic, which provides advice and support for people struggling with anxiety and is a member of the Men & Boys Coalition, specifically consulting with them on reducing the rates of male suicide in the UK.

Scholars’ Presentation Evening Wednesday 2 October 6.00pm Samuel Pepys Foyer, St Paul’s School John Colet, the founder of St Paul’s, initially intended the number of pupils in his school to be 153, the number associated with the miraculous draught of fishes in the St John’s Gospel. Now, with pupils numbering nearly 1,500, academic scholars are awarded an emblem of a silver fish, which can be worn on their lapel. Parents of newly appointed Junior Scholars are invited to attend this relatively informal presentation of the silver fish.

The Blue Electric Wind

He and some of the other school misfits seem to be alone in realising what has happened. Is it the weather? Is it a virus? They must join forces to try and work out what is causing everyone in town to lose all sense of who they are. The Blue Electric Wind, performed by a cast of Sixth Form Actors, is a new play about bravery, growing up and why we remember what we do. Audience

Old Pauline Lodge Centenary Event Wednesday 16 October 5.30pm St Paul’s School The Old Pauline Lodge was founded in 1919 for old boys and current and former staff of St Paul’s School. Membership has always reflected the rich cultural and religious diversity found at the school itself. With smart phones, social media and the meteoric rise of Fortnite, the digital world of the teenager has changed beyond recognition in the last 10 years. Opening Night: Other People by Keith Roberts
Wednesday 6 November 6.00pm Milton Gallery, St Paul’s School Keith Roberts studied fine art in Newcastle and then at the Royal College of Art in London. He was awarded a place at the Delfina Studios Trust and then an Abbey Fellowship to study at the British School in Rome, an intensely rewarding experience that continues to inform his work. The exhibition Other People at St Paul’s School will bring together paintings, drawings and sculpture that engage with uncertainty and upheaval in the world. The work encourages the contemplation of silenced voices and mute witness; to tally the absence and presence of those other people.

Monday 11 November 7.00pm Wathen Hall, St Paul’s School Sophie Oxenbridge, co-curator of Bridget Riley at the Hayward Gallery, will give a talk about this retrospective devoted to the work of celebrated British artist Bridget Riley, the first large-scale exhibition of Riley’s work to be held in the UK for 16 years. Spanning over 70 years of work, the exhibition places particular emphasis on the origins of Riley’s practice and traces pivotal moments across her acclaimed career. It features early paintings and drawings, iconic black-andwhite works of the 1960s, expansive canvases in colour, recent wall paintings, and preparatory materials that reveal Riley’s working methods. Bridget Riley will run at the Hayward Gallery from 23 October 2019 to 26 January 2020.

Al is in Wonderland – Upper Third Performance Treasures of St Paul’s School: Exploration and Adventure Wednesday 13 November 6.00pm Kayton Library, St Paul’s School The librarians and archivist will be working together to display items from the school’s collection on the theme of exploration and adventure. We will be showing some of our rare atlases, seals from Ancient Egypt, and diaries and photographs from boys’ trips abroad. Magnifying glasses and white gloves will be available.

Join us as the Third Years dive down the rabbit hole and into a new, reimagined version of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice tales. Thursday 28 November – Saturday 30 November 7.30pm Samuel Pepys Theatre, St Paul’s School Set in the Jewish ghetto of Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1942 and based on diaries written during the darkest days of the holocaust, Ghetto tells of the unlikely flourishing of a theatre against the backdrop of Nazi mass extermination. Some protested that “in a graveyard you do not do theatre” but theatre they did, and it proved a vibrant source of vitality amidst the daily disappearances and despair. Edward Williams’ final production at St Paul’s will be both a chilling warning and an uplifting celebration. Audience

Parents’ Christian Prayer Group Meeting Friday 29 November 9.30am Wathen Hall, St Paul’s School The Parents’ Christian Prayer Group is a group of parents who meet twice a term to pray together. The informal meeting includes coffee, a reading and prayers. An annual dinner is also held at the school, which is a wonderful opportunity to meet members of staff who attend. No formal membership required; all are welcome to attend the meetings.

Jazz at The Bulls Head Sunday 1 December 2.30pm The Bulls Head, Barnes Groups from the highly regarded jazz programme at St Paul’s School will play a set of traditional and contemporary numbers, with everything from solos to the school’s Funk Group and Big Band.
