Thank you from the High Master

In the blink of an eye, we have said goodbye to another academic year, and if there is such a thing as a normal year at this extraordinary school, then we have come pretty close to one in 2021/2022. The pandemic may not be fully behind us, but we have seen our new senior school spaces finally in their full use this year and we are excited to be starting the St Paul’s Juniors rebuild. Beyond completing our physical enhancements, I have valued the opportunity to see our pupils thrive in their continued commitment to scholarship and community engagement.

It has been such a pleasure to see pupils enjoy full, in-person learning again and re-immerse themselves in the bustling atmosphere of Pauline school life. In a year overflowing with celebrations and achievements, the 1st VIII achieved a thrilling victory at Henley, Upper Eighth students Oliver and George won the 1st pairs Rackets Championship and the school also enjoyed successes in football, cricket rugby and racing. Academically the school has seen its strongest A Level and GCSE results in living memory.

Our Bursary provision has also flourished this year with our goal of 153 pupils receiving a bursary very much on target. This has been made possible through an incredible programme of community fundraising initiatives including the annual Christmas Appeal which raised £443,000, providing 100% bursaries for two pupils. The Thomas Gresham Committee students raised nearly £22,000 through the popular Readathon,

Sweet-a-thon and Quiz. These events have meant much more than fundraising as they have been led by the pupils themselves, providing opportunities for engagement between the pupils, parents, teachers and Old Paulines.

As we come to the final year of the Shaping Our Future campaign, I hope this Impact Report will achieve just what it sets out to do – report back on the impact of fundraising and our efforts to bring together the community of St Paul’s School. Thank you to everyone who has played their part in organising and communicating our events and initiatives, donated to Shaping our Future and supported the school and our pupils over the last year. Through your continued support we look forward to making a difference for the next generation and beyond.

A COMMUNITY LIKE NO OTHER

Welcome to our 2021-2022 Impact Report, with ‘our’ being the key word. It is only through the efforts of our entire community that we can share the news of exceeding this year’s fundraising goals and of widening our engagement over this past year. We have come a long way in adapting to the challenges presented by the pandemic but we have learned that we can continue to experiment, change course and strive. We have come together as a community to ensure that this extraordinary school experience is available to boys who would not have access without the support provided through our bursary programme. Thank you for making this possible and for the part you have played in supporting the Shaping Our Future campaign.

I have been delighted this year to have had many opportunities to properly introduce our High Master Sally-Anne Huang to the members of the St Paul’s Community including our popular In Conversation with the High Master and Topical Tuesdays series. These events have proven to be some of the most popular in our events programme.

We look forward to welcoming attendees to the 2023 series.

The Development and Engagement team has produced this report and I am very grateful for their efforts. I am also thankful for the contributions and achievements of the pupils, Old Paulines, parents, former parents and staff, past and present, this year and you will have the opportunity to learn more as you read the following pages. I am particularly pleased to report that over half of our parents have become donors to the Shaping Our Future campaign and we have doubled the number of Old Pauline donors. As we come to the final year of the campaign we hope to increase these numbers further.

We have a great deal to look forward to over the next year with many events on the calendar. I hope you will be able to join us at one or more of these events and I look forward to meeting you then.

ANNUAL EVENTS PROGRAMME

Alongside the continuation of everpopular events such as Pauline Perspectives and the Thomas Gresham quiz, this year’s calendar saw the introduction of many new offerings, such as the Old Pauline Club’s Future of series in celebration of their 150th Anniversary.

The ceremonial events of the academic year were presented ‘in person’ for all guests, a welcome change from last year where only pupils and a limited number of staff were present in the room. We were delighted to finally host our parent community at these key school events, while still offering an online option to extend our capacity.

ONLINE EVENTS

Our Topical Tuesdays series continued with gusto this year as we discussed all things from Publishing and Creative Writing to Mental Health Awareness, International Women’s Day, Purposeful

Businesses and Formula One. We also continued our In Conversation with the High Master series, which discussed updates in term of Co-Curricular, Co-Education and Academic Structure, as well as the Masterclass series, which covered Drama and History earlier in the year.

BACK TO LIFE, BACK TO REALITY

This year our revitalised on-site events programme ran alongside our virtual programme. In October 2021, we relaunched the Pauline Continuum Cycling Club and were joined by Yanto Barker to lead the ride around Richmond Park. We welcomed Dan Snow OP on-site for a live viewing of his famous History Hit podcast, where he discussed Field Marshal Montgomery OP and D-Day, appropriately held in The Montgomery Room.

We were finally able to hold the long-postponed Consecration of the

Chapel on 26 May, previously due to take place the day the UK went into the first lockdown. The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, The Lord Bishop of London, presided and consecrated the Chapel, recognising the historic links of John Colet to St Paul’s Cathedral and the Diocese of London; the Rt Revd Dr Richard Cheetham, Bishop of Kingston, (with his clergy) represented the Bishop of Southwark, recognising that the school is now geographically in his diocese. In addition, the Rt Revd Michael Colclough, former Bishop of Kensington, who preached the sermon, is Chaplain to the Mercers’ Company and so embodied the school’s continued connection with the Company. The Rt Revd Richard Atkinson, the Bishop of Bedford (OP 1971-76), read the Gospel. The School Chaplain, Revd Matthew Knox, and the Chair of Governors, Richard Cassell (OP 1968-72) also participated in the service. The school is grateful

for the contribution generously given by Alan Rind (OP 1954-59) to furnish the new Chapel. The furniture was designed and engineered by Luke Hughes (OP 1969-74).

PARENTS’ GROUPS

Our Parents’ Groups continued to provide enriching events and social activities for our entire community, including the Christmas soirée and various year group events. A highlight was the on-site return of Pauline Perspectives, which debated the rise of Artificial Intelligence and St Paul’s Juniors Parents’ Group events including the SPJ Christmas Fayre, SPJ Factor and SPJ Annual Quiz. SPARTA (St Paul’s Art Association) covered expansive topics such as the Future of Art and NFTs, Architecture and the History of Jeans. The St Paul’s Boat Club was able to gather on-site at Plum Puddings and their Annual Dinner, which saw Freddie Davidson (OP 2011-16) join as guest speaker.

OLD PAULINE CLUB

This year the Old Pauline Club celebrated 150 years of Pauline Alumni Engagement. To commemorate this anniversary, the Club introduced the Future of… series, which saw Ed Vaizey, Old Pauline Club President, joined by a number of established Old Paulines, discussing everything from Politics and the Arts to Education and Britain’s Healthcare System. The celebrations culminated in the OPC 150th Anniversary Dinner at the

Tabernacle in Notting Hill. One of the overarching aims of the anniversary has been to raise funds for St Paul’s Bursary Programme through the 150th Appeal. This fundraising dinner allowed the club to spread awareness of the Bursary Fund to further corners of the Old Pauline Community.

The Professional Engagement Programme, in association with the Old Pauline Club, continued again this year, with Engineering, Finance and Entrepreneurship networking events. Attendees listened to expert panel discussions, while networking with those in their industry and making connections from the St Paul’s Community.

Our thanks go to our whole community, including committees, guest speakers, panellists, event attendees and volunteers for supporting our programme of events, especially as we returned to site.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2022/23. Our forthcoming events can be found on the school website or through the QR code.

PHILANTHROPY –SHAPING OUR FUTURE

We always set ourselves ambitious targets at St Paul’s and this year was no exception. As we move into the final year of the Shaping Our Future appeal we are delighted to have raised a further £3.7m and our ROI stands at an impressive £12.88. With your support we have been able to make considerable commitments to expanding educational opportunities at St Paul’s School through our bursary programme and our new buildings.

We are proud of the thriving philanthropic culture that exists, with around half of parents and seven percent of Old Paulines listed as active donors and an increasing number of current pupils supporting in their own way.

The extensive list of donors in the back of this report reflects the appreciation that our community has for the remarkable education that St Paul’s provides and their desire to have it available to all boys capable of thriving at the school, regardless of their financial circumstances. There are many reasons why parents, Old Paulines, staff and former parents chose to donate and we are grateful to one of our donor families, the Gissings, who have written in this report about their gift and why it was important to them.

From the traditional leavers’ appeals, which in the last 10 years have raised almost £1m, to the hotly contested SPJ Staff v Parents football match and the leaving appeal for St Paul’s Juniors Head Maxine Shaw, this has been a busy year. Thank you to our fundraising committee and representatives, the ever-supportive parents’ groups, the Old Pauline Club and the various trusts and foundations that often support multiple boys at the school.

Thank you for your continued support, placing bursaries at the heart of St Paul’s and enabling talented boys from a range of backgrounds to experience the gift of a St Paul’s education. We look forward to working with you all as we move into the final year of the Shaping Our Future campaign and reach our target of 153 bursary places at St Paul’s.

BAUBLES AND CHRISTMAS APPEAL

Traditionally (well, in the last 3 years!) we have encouraged our parent community to come together to support our bursary programme through our Christmas Appeal. We were delighted this year that a generous parent offered to match all donations up to the value of £50,000 and we asked our community help us unlock the full amount. To mark the appeal, we also commissioned a limited-edition bauble, the proceeds of which went toward the appeal and U8 pupil Hugo dedicated the proceeds of his striking photography book, London in Silence, to the appeal. A special thank you to the three SPJ boys who donated their birthday money to the appeal.

In all, our community raised a phenomenal £408,869 from our 2021 Christmas Appeal.

LEAVERS’ APPEALS – THOMAS GRESHAM BURSARY AWARD

One area of pupil fundraising that we want to celebrate is the Thomas Gresham Bursary Award, a wholly pupil-led appeal, fundraising to provide a 100% bursary for the highest performing boy at 11+ who needs financial support.

This award was founded in 2017 by four of our then Upper Eighth pupils, named after Sir Thomas Gresham (OP 1531-37) who founded the London Royal Exchange and was Financier to King Edward VI, Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.

This year’s committee of Will, Louis, Charlie and Matt have used their year in post to raise awareness amongst their fellow pupils about their goal to help provide ‘a quality education, no matter the walk of life’, by financially supporting the two Greshamite bursary award recipients currently attending St Paul’s. They raised a phenomenal £21,512 through a lot of hard work, entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering enthusiasm – all in their hectic final year. This brings current total donations to the Thomas Gresham Bursary Award to £185,888.

The whole Development team has really enjoyed working with the committee this year and wishes them all the very best in their next adventures.

The Junior School readathon was a particular Thomas Gresham highlight and a special thank you to all the boys who participated and between them raised £10,000.

OLD PAULINE 150TH APPEAL

In 2021-22 we are celebrating 150 years of Pauline Alumni Engagement, with plans to refresh the branding of the OP club alongside a series of special events to mark the year.

New President Ed Vaizey, Lord Vaizey of Didcot, following consultation with his fellow OPs, set an ambitious fundraising target of £1.5m to ensure socio-economic diversity is retained in the school by supporting potential Paulines who need financial assistance, encouraging OPs to make a donation of an amount relating to the anniversary.

We still have some way to go on this appeal, but what is pleasing to see is the number of OPs supporting the school’s bursary ambitions, which has increased by over 50% this year.

EXCELLENCE WITHOUT EXCLUSIVITY

Our bursary programme continues to flourish and expand and we are tantalizingly close to our interim target of funding 153 bursary pupils by 2023.

In total, we have raised £12.88m towards supporting our current pupils and building the foundations of a sustainable bursary programme for future St Paul’s pupils, who have the potential to thrive at the school but not the financial means.

We are proud of all our bursary pupils and we wish them all the very best of luck as they continue their educational adventures.

Donor Profile

The Gissing Family (Endowment)

This is what the best schools can offer, and what St Paul’s does brilliantly. There are few things that can be more life-changing than a good education. My own father left school at 14 and regretted his lost opportunity for the rest of his life. Helping a very bright child to access the extraordinary education at St Paul’s School honours my father’s legacy in perpetuity.

“I cannot think of many boys that match, let alone exceed his enthusiasm for the variety and quality of opportunities on offer here. What’s more, recent successes prove that not only has he participated but he has flourished in so many!”

Tutor comment about a former bursary student

“St Paul’s gives boys the chance to further their talents, to flourish in whichever direction they may choose, and most importantly the opportunity to discover a true passion and the environment to really pursue it.

We believe that being given the chance to try all kinds of things at a young age, and to discover what makes you tick, is the greatest gift you can give a child. An education is about far more than just the grades. One of the cornerstones of a happy, fulfilled life is the ability to follow your dreams and to do something you really love. St Paul’s School is a place where this journey can start in earnest. At a time when society needs solutions to all kinds of issues such as climate change, mass migration, food scarcity, political extremism and polarisation, an education should be about inspiring gifted and intellectually curious young people who can help us find answers.

Katinka and I both feel that a Pauline education is an exceptional privilege, and we were pleased to see that in line with its founding vision, the school has sought to expand the number of boys that have access to it. With its various fundraising appeals the school has got it right over the last few years in seeking to drive up the numbers. In doing so, it has allowed many more gifted young people to develop into individuals that can go out into the world and make a difference, ones who may not have otherwise had access to such an outstanding opportunity. In the grand scheme of things it’s a small gesture. But we are absolutely certain it will change the lives of the boys involved, and there’s always a chance that somewhere along the way one of them might make a positive impact on the wider world too.

Alongside the rest of the Pauline Community we are pleased to play our part in making this ambition a reality. As a family we are fortunate to have the ability to support in this way, we know our endowment will change boys’ lives forever. What could be more amazing?”

The Hannam Family (Partnership Fund)

We initially considered supporting a student through a bursary. However, while bursaries are a critical component of a meritocratic admissions policy, we wanted our contribution to have an impact on the wider community. Having co-created the UK’s first multi-year summer school programme to support students who would be the first in their families to attend university, I learned the power of mentoring and peer-to-peer tutoring. The Outreach and Advancement teams at St Paul’s were extremely receptive to the idea of creating opportunities for current Paulines to engage with students from surrounding London schools.

Bursaries 45 in St Paul’s Juniors 97 in St Paul’s School 95

overall on 75%+ awards £12.9m raised for bursaries through the Shaping Our Future campaign

“We first came to know St Paul’s when our eldest son Max entered Colet Court at 8 and his younger brother, Benji, started a year later at 7. Both very happily went on to St Paul’s School, before heading off to university in America. The quality and breadth of the teaching and activities served them both well, laying down roots that have stayed with them in later life.

My one lament was the lack of financial resources for boys from less advantaged backgrounds to have the SPS experience. An SPS education prepares boys to maximize their potential in ways that many other schools cannot do. I believe a good education is vital, and I am passionate about improving social mobility in the UK, pursuing this goal through my work as a fellow of the Sutton Trust, a founder of the Accelerate and Access Foundation, and a supporter of the outreach programme at St Paul’s.

Our support for St Paul’s is driven by two important personal considerations. Firstly, St Paul’s is a place that promotes pupil leadership, whether in sports, school government or social impact. Instilling a passion to enhance the world around them is as important as academic achievement. Secondly, a multi-year philanthropic commitment can powerfully impact St Paul’s. We have pledged our donation to St Paul’s over four years, enabling the school to stably plan and make long-term commitments to their outreach programmes.

Supporting St Paul’s also enables me to maintain a close relationship with the school community now that my sons have left. They are proud of their school and the part our family plays in supporting its ambitions.”

“My son is now in the Fifth Form at St Paul’s. He entered St Paul’s Juniors at the age of 11 from a local state primary school and has never looked back. He is very proud to be a Pauline. He has a great friendship group, enjoys the teaching approach and is thriving academically. My husband and I would not have been in a position to send him to St Paul’s were it not for the bursary, and we are extremely grateful for this support.”

LEGACY GIFTS: A FINAL GESTURE AND A LASTING TRIBUTE

There is a long-standing tradition of Paulines wishing to leave a final gift to the school in their will. For some people demands on their finances prevent them from making a gift in their lifetime. Others have made donations to the school during their life but also wish to leave a gift as a final gesture to acknowledge what the school helped them to achieve.

Legacies of all sizes make a huge difference and play an important part in securing St Paul’s future. We have been privileged to receive over £10m in legacy gifts in the last few years and form lasting friendships with many families through their loved one’s enduring link with the school.

Legacies are an easy and taxadvantageous way to support St Paul’s. All gifts are exempt from inheritance tax and, for estates that leave 10% or more to charity, there is a reduction in inheritance tax from 40% to 36%.

When you leave a legacy to St Paul’s you can specify how you would like it to be used. You may wish to support a specific area such as bursaries or capital projects, or ask for it to be allocated to the area of greatest need which is at the Governors’ discretion.

To discuss legacy giving in confidence, please contact Samantha Bushell, Head of Regular Giving, via email sxb@stpaulsschool.org.uk or call 020 8746 5313.

A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY

It is hugely exciting to have joined a school where a culture of philanthropy is so deeply embedded.

The impact of such generosity should not be underestimated, and it is undoubtedly because of the school’s serious commitment to offering bursaries that St Paul’s can attract the boys it would best serve. I have already been struck not only by the engagement in and enthusiasm for the fundraising process but also the tremendous kindness demonstrated by so many within our community. Indeed, developing in the boys a desire to be a force for good is something I am particularly passionate about. Even at the very earliest stages of their SPJ careers, I want the boys to be involved in philanthropic activities and to experience the array of benefits that can come from such endeavours. Thus, as I take on the role of leading St Paul’s Juniors, I shall certainly do all I possibly can to support the bursary programme both by building on past achievements as well as exploring new initiatives.

In my previous roles, I have observed quite how important bursaries are in providing children access to a range of high quality, educational opportunities. One of the greatest privileges I have had as a teacher, a Housemaster and as a Head is to then see how children utilise everything they have learned when launching themselves into a world beyond the school gates. With a wonderful sense of self-belief and sophisticated skill set, they have flourished. The effects of bursaries, therefore, can clearly last a lifetime.

I am very much looking forward to meeting and thanking supporters over the months ahead. The amount of money our community has raised is quite remarkable, and will clearly make a great difference to the lives of many.

ST PAUL’S IN PARTNERSHIP

A Pauline education involves service and the widening of social horizons: all of our Lower Eighth spend their Autumn and Spring terms volunteering, with many continuing into the Summer term. At St Paul’s Juniors, pupils are encouraged to support the school’s chosen charity – currently Doorstep Library – with fundraising initiatives throughout the year.

Our School and Charity Partnerships programme has four main strands: partnering with local schools and developing the skills of enterprise; offering local service and volunteering opportunities for our pupils; supporting local, national and international charities; and building awareness of and applications for our bursary offer.

Partnership with Schools and Enterprise

St Paul’s has an extensive partnership programme, supporting primary and secondary schools at a local and national level. Much of our partnership activity is offered through Colet Mentoring and through the West London Partnership, an independentstate secondary school partnership of 11 local schools.

COLET MENTORING

Since partnering with Ed-Tech start-up EasyA, St Paul’s has run over 3,500 sessions on its trailblazing peer learning app with schools as far afield as South Sudan. St Paul’s also offered live mentoring support via Google Classroom in STEM and modern foreign languages. Many Lower Eighth pupils have supported younger pupils at Fulham Boys’ School, Christ’s School and Hammersmith Academy.

WEST LONDON PARTNERSHIP

Building on this private-state initiative, the Start-it Entrepreneurship programme – with events for all pupils and alumni – has been embedded into the partnership, now reaching around 300 pupils annually. We also offer weekly GCSE Latin lessons (Years 9-11), Saturday morning STEM classes (Years 10-12), a University Day providing application advice to over 200 students, Oxbridge and Medicine preparation for 100 Year 13 students, and Masterclasses for Medicine applicants.

PRIMARY PROFESSORS

For our primary school partners, we relaunched our Primary Professors academic enrichment programme, expanding the offer over the full three terms and the range of subjects offered. During the last year, around

100 Year 5 pupils from 30 local primary schools enjoyed a range of lessons, from STEM to Philosophy. Around 20 Year 12 pupils from St Paul’s School and St Paul’s Girls’ School volunteer on the programme.

STEM SUMMER SCHOOLS

Our residential Physics Summer Boarding School (partnering with Queen Mary University of London and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining) continued again this year, with 62 Year 10 pupils from around the UK. In addition, several hundred participants signed up virtually from around a dozen countries. This course is generously funded by a donor parent who is also sponsoring the first bursary place awarded to a pupil who previously attended the course, who started at St Paul’s in September 2022.

At St Paul’s, we have a genuine desire to engage in partnership and charitable work and a commitment to share our expertise and facilities with local, national and international communities.

Service in the Community

All Lower Eighth pupils volunteer in the Autumn/Spring terms – usually with one of our partner schools or charities – an initiative linked with the PSHE and General Studies curriculum. Many pupils choose to continue during the Summer term and all pupils in the Eighth Form have the opportunity to volunteer as part of their Wednesday ‘Games Half’. In addition, most Fifth Form pupils regularly volunteer for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Supporting Local, National and International Charities

The St Paul’s Pauls4All Charity Committee fundraises for and increases the awareness of our chosen local charities; City Harvest, Friends of Barnes Common, London Sports Trust and Doorstep Library; our UK Charity of the Year, Women’s Aid; and our international link school charities, Beyond Ourselves and Senahasa Trust, in Zambia and Sri Lanka, respectively.

The Charity Committee campaigned to educate the school community about the charities we support, including panel discussions and talks during Pauls4All week, and mufti days to raise funds. Pupils enjoyed the whole school charity walk for Women’s Aid which raised over £12,000: the total raised by pupils across St Paul’s and St Paul’s Juniors this academic year exceeded £20,000.

St Paul’s supports various sporting clubs with the free loan of our excellent facilities. Regular beneficiaries include Westside Basketball Club, Barnes Music Festival, Barnes Swimming Club, and the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival which St Paul’s supports as its Education Partner.

With the generous support of the Kusuma Trust, we continue encouraging talented boys who may not have the financial means to attend St Paul’s to apply to the school. Post-pandemic we have featured bursary opportunities at in-person educational events and publications aimed at educators, parents and pupils. We have also implemented a digital campaign focusing on the 11+ and 16+ entry points for state school pupils.

BUILDING TO INSPIRE

As part of our sports provision it is essential that we continue to provide the accompanying sports facilities that will allow our current and next generation of sportsmen and women to flourish. Our two key sporting projects include the new East Pavilion and Boat House.

East Pavilion

Planning permission willing, the new East Pavilion will provide much needed facilities and a community space for students and local community groups using the pitches. The club room within the pavilion will be available for pre and post-match teas, and function as a sports space for yoga, circuit training and dance classes. The pavilion’s ‘diamondshape’ provides excellent sightlines across the pitches while the angled timber screens blend seamlessly into its environs and encapsulate noise from the building and games, creating a beautiful, purposeful space that is respectful to the needs of the local inhabitants as well as nesting birds.

Boat House

Amongst the many disruptions caused by COVID is the delayed refurbishment of the Boat House. Plans are currently underway to define the project with options to re-clad the exterior, replace or repair fixtures, fittings and equipment, update the changing, welfare and gym facilities, add insulation, heating, lighting, ventilation and new flooring and completely decorate. The refurbished Boat House will provide a much-needed space for the school and ensure the rowers have a space that is fit-forpurpose in the 21st century.

Anyone interested in supporting either of these projects is invited to call Ellie Sleeman on 020 8746 5418.

LSE: Mathematics and Economics

“When I first started at St Paul’s I knew that I would get the opportunity to experience one of the best academic institutions in the country. I am truly grateful for the amount of effort and time all my teachers took to make sure I was achieving my maximum potential, but also their enthusiasm for their subject that would make learning so much more enjoyable and interesting.

What especially stuck with me was the sense of inclusion. I was always comfortable being myself and never felt the urge to fit in, and with the tremendous support from Mrs Lapaire-Adumekwe and the bursary department, I always had ways to voice any concerns and worries.

My time at St Paul’s was spent engaging in societies like the newly set up African & Caribbean society and taking part in the basketball team and the variety of other sports available. The many opportunities that I have come across here have made me grow academically but also made me more confident and dedicated. I will now move onto studying Mathematics and Economics at LSE. Without this bursary I would not have been able to attend St Paul’s and I hope many more students can have this opportunity.”

INCOME AND EXPENDITURE

Annual Income Annual Expenditure

In 2020/21 school fees accounted for 87% of the school’s total income (£35.9m). This is net of the 8% Spring term fee rebate provided following the closure of the school site due to COVID-19. Fundraising contributed £3.8m (9% of total income) following the continued success of the Shaping Our Future campaign and the generosity of those parents who donated their Spring term fee rebate towards the Hardship Fund. The school’s investments also performed well, earning income and making net gains totalling £1.6m (4% of total income).

Teaching and support staff, operating, trading, finance, fundraising costs and depreciation account for 85% of the total annual costs. £1.2m was paid by the school out of income to fund bursaries and other fee remissions, with a further £2.1m being provided from restricted fundraised bursary funds. Retained surpluses will be used to fund future capital expenditure and maintenance of the school estate together with providing additional bursary support as required.

Balance Sheet

The school has a strong balance sheet with total reserves of £120.4m at 31 August 2021. £109.3m is represented by capitalised buildings and other assets that cannot be realised. The majority of the school’s restricted bursary funds are held as investments in equities and funds with Waverton Investment Management Limited and Rathbone Investment Management Limited. Cash not required for the school’s immediate operating and project needs is invested.

Summary

We have now started the next phase of the renewal programme, utilising the remainder of the £50m of long-term debt funding secured on the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors, which is scheduled to be completed during the 2024/25 academic year. This will deliver world-class school facilities for our community for the next 50 years and beyond.

The school does not benefit from large endowed bursary funds, but we hope to build on this in order to provide income to fund future bursaries. It also remains critical that our fundraising continues to be successful and sustainable if we are to be able to support our future bursary and partnership ambitions. This will involve developing additional income streams through the school’s trading subsidiary company, St Paul’s School Enterprises Limited, such as the hiring of the school’s facilities, the sale of merchandise and commercialising the school’s intellectual property.

THANK YOU

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all those Old Paulines, current and former parents, staff, friends of St Paul’s and trusts who have supported our fundraising efforts over the past year by making a gift or informing us of their intention to leave a legacy.

We will happily rectify any errors.

We want to thank everybody who has supported Shaping Our Future at every level through our Christmas Appeal and Telethon. To everybody who has given, pledged or is planning a gift or legacy to St Paul’s, including all our donors who have chosen to remain anonymous, thank you.
