Thank you from the High Master

I have arrived at St Paul’s at an exciting time in the school’s history, despite the challenges and disruption of the last eighteen months. The rebuilding of the senior school is now complete, with St Paul’s Juniors to follow soon, and we are now able to shift our focus to our goal of widening access. I am incredibly proud to be part of this great institution and I am highly conscious of the High Master’s role of stewardship, building upon our foundation of excellence, whilst enabling our pupils to understand, serve and thrive in modern society.

The school’s proud history stretches over 500 years and St Paul’s has withstood the challenges of the Plague, the Great Fire of London and two world wars. The effects of the pandemic have proved testing, but pupils and staff have shown ingenuity and resilience in the face of every challenge. This time will long be remembered for the charity and selflessness shown by large parts of our society; however, it has also highlighted the inequality that exists throughout the country, particularly in terms of educational opportunities. In keeping with John Colet’s vision for St Paul’s, generations of Paulines, their parents, and friends have displayed significant generosity towards the school and our partners during this time, and I am extremely grateful for your support.

This year, despite the period of lockdown, our wider community has been able to engage with and enjoy our virtual events programme. The Development and Engagement team worked with school staff, Old Paulines, parents and external agencies to deliver an extensive programme

to entertain and inspire those of all interests and, since many of these events were free to attend, generous donations were made to our bursary fund in return.

The growing bursary programme was one of the factors that attracted me to St Paul’s. In previous roles, I have seen the benefit both to the pupils in receipt of bursaries, but also to the wider school community, in ensuring there is a significant proportion of bursary pupils attending a school. It has been proven many times over that increased socio-economic diversity within an independent school community only serves to enrich the experiences of all within it.

With the economic issues resulting from the pandemic, we were concerned that our fundraising might be affected and our ambition to reach 153 bursary pupils by 2023 might not be realised. However, with events ranging from our telethon to the incredibly successful Giving Day, our community has exceeded all expectations in their support this year. Access to a St Paul’s education would not be possible

for so many gifted boys if it were not for your support.

In terms of capital projects, the majority of funding has now been secured for the new sports pavilion. This facility will not only provide an inspiring and multi-use space for our pupils but will also enable the school to give back in other ways; we shall be able to open our facilities further to partnership schools and the local community, as well as offering commercial rental opportunities to raise additional funds for our bursary programme.

I am truly humbled by your support of the school, not only for your financial gifts, but also in lending your time, expertise, and contacts for the benefit of our pupils and the wider community. I very much look forward to meeting many of you during the next academic year when, we hope, some semblance of normality will return for face-toface events and meetings, and I can thank you in person for your generous support.

A UNIQUE COMMUNITY

I am excited to welcome you to our report –a celebration on many different levels of the generosity of the Pauline community. This year that open-heartedness becomes even more remarkable when it is judged against the background of the restrictions and challenges that the global pandemic has brought.

During this time, we have welcomed in a new High Master, Sally-Anne Huang. It has been deeply disappointing not to be able to introduce her properly to the community and for her to be unable to thank so many of you in person for what you have given of both your finances and your time.

It is wonderful, however, to be able to recognise your contribution in this report. In the next pages, you will enjoy an update on all that has been achieved by pupils, Old Paulines, parents, former parents and staff, past and present, this year. So many people have given time, expertise and encouragement as we have broken new ground, quickly moving our engagement and fundraising programmes online.

In amongst all the uncertainty and the loss, we have striven to find the positives. Increased use of digital platforms has enabled us to engage much wider sections of our community globally. Through our speaker programme, we have shared unprecedented access to the expertise and breadth of experience that exists amongst us. At the beginning of lockdown, there was time to have longer conversations with our older OPs.

This has been a year of ‘firsts’, with initiatives ranging from telethons to Giving Days. Our community has responded by returning fee rebates and donating to our US bursary and Leavers’ appeals. Our fundraising for Shaping Our Future currently stands at £12.78m. We now have 44% of current parents giving and 6% of OPs – our aspiration is to increase this to 50% and 10% respectively over the next 12 months.

We are so grateful for all that has been achieved in these difficult times and excited as we look to the future – especially at the thought of being able to get together and say thank you in person.

ANNUAL EVENTS PROGRAMME

Our events programme exists to engage our community in ways that appeal to the widest range of tastes and interests. The virtual events programme of 2020-21 built upon the success of our first digital offerings last academic year and, with increased engagement, we now have a range of recognisable and popular series.

This year’s busy and varied calendar of virtual events kept the community gripped, from the biennial Cotter-Cruickshank (Classics)

Lecture given by Old Pauline, the Rt. Hon Sir David Bean (1962-71), to seasonal virtual wine tastings with parent, Beverley Blanning, Master of Wine, to the Thomas Gresham Committee’s Quiz Night.

The ceremonial events of the academic year were presented ‘in person’ for the pupils involved and a limited number of staff, with families and the wider community able to join virtually. These live-streamed events

enabled more pupils’ extended families to participate in events, leading us to consider the possibility of continuing to stream major school events after the lifting of restrictions.

Similarly, the Old Pauline Club’s first-ever virtual Feast Service enabled OPs scattered around the globe to enjoy this annual tradition.

ONLINE SERIES

The rest of our events were delivered entirely online and a major focus of our virtual programme has been providing thought-provoking lectures and webinars to entertain and inform our audiences during the period of

enforced isolation. Such events were also actively promoted to our partner schools. 2020 saw the introduction of the popular Topical Tuesdays series, in which a diverse range of guest speakers from across the Pauline community share their take on the current environment, with ever-increasing diversity of subject matter over the course of the year. Highlights this year included Professor Mark Bailey returning to deliver a particularly apt talk on the Black Death and lessons from history, and teachers, Old Paulines, parents and former parents discussing topics ranging from US politics to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the arts. We are delighted to inform you that the Topical Tuesdays series continues into the new academic year.

St Paul’s Masterclasses were designed to allow the parent body to experience for themselves a taste of the educational opportunities from which St Paul’s pupils benefit, as the school’s subject specialist teaching staff deliver a short series of lessons. This year’s virtual classes allowed busy parents to log on from home and included Philosophy, Scientific discovery, First World War History

and Archaeology, Art, Music, Drama and Italian.

PARENTS’ GROUPS

Our Parents’ Groups, encompassing those of the Junior and Senior schools, as well as SPARTA (St Paul’s Art Association), have continued with enthusiasm to provide enrichment opportunities outside of school hours.

The Senior School Parents’ Group provided social events for the entire parent body, including welcome coffee mornings, as well as regular

year group offerings ranging from book clubs to online cocktail making classes. A particular highlight was the annual Pauline Perspectives debate, which was seamlessly moved online. Highlights for the St Paul’s Juniors Parents’ Group included moving the ever-popular Christmas Fayre, SPJ Factor and SPJ Quiz Night online. SPARTA continued to provide a popular line up of online events for our audiences, given by classical and contemporary artists and art historians, as well as workshops for pupils.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING WITH THE OLD PAULINE CLUB

The Professional Engagement Programme, in association with the Old Pauline Club, turned virtual for 2020-21 with resounding success. 1,122 attendees joined evenings run for the established Law, Finance and Medical Networks, as well as the more recently-launched Entrepreneurs’ Network, run in conjunction with the school’s initiative, Start it PRO, and the Not-for-Profit and Social Enterprise Network. Attendees were once again given the opportunity to listen to a discussion from panels of professionals ranging from those just starting out in their careers to the stalwarts of their sectors.

Our thanks go to our whole community, including committees, guest speakers, panellists, interviewers and event attendees for supporting our programme of events in this tumultuous year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2021/22! Virtual event recordings are available for our community to view on the school website: www.stpaulsschool.org.uk/ virtualevents

PHILANTHROPY –SHAPING OUR FUTURE

Following the completion of the rebuilding of the Senior School, we launched our ambitious Shaping Our Future fundraising campaign in May 2019, with the specific aims of widening access to St Paul’s through our bursaries programme; increasing our profile within the local community through our partnerships work and voluntary service; and continuing with our rebuilding project, turning our attention to our sporting and hospitality provision.

A target of £20m to be raised by 2023 was set by our Governing Body. Planning and research in consultation with our community was undertaken to ensure our ambitions were realistic and widely supported. This consultation led us to a fundraising offer that balanced the desire amongst some members of our community to support building projects, whilst the main focus remained on our bursary and partnerships ambitions.

Reassured in the support and capability of our community, we launched our campaign. Whilst an international pandemic had not featured in our planning, we are fortunate that, in this year of challenge and adversity, we have received tremendous support. We have raised £12.78m overall, with the vast majority towards our bursaries and partnerships work. Such achievements are only made possible through the support of our community, to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude.

In these difficult times, we are proud to provide the very best in education and, amid the anxiety created by the pandemic, one positive conclusion is clear: education matters more than ever.

TELETHON

We set ourselves an ambitious target with the economic backdrop of the pandemic and held the first St Paul’s School telethon in September 2020. Fifteen recent leavers, working from their homes or university accommodation, called and spoke to 597 fellow Old Paulines about the school’s latest developments, reminisced about their time at St Paul’s and took a moment to discuss the Shaping Our Future vision and to ask for support.

We used a generous gift of £50,000 for match funding from Old Pauline, Sir Lloyd Dorfman, £500 of which was unlocked each time a regular donation was confirmed during the campaign.

Thank you to all who have made donations through the campaign.

GIVING DAY

On 27 and 28 April, we held the first-ever St Paul’s School Giving Day. The funds raised will go directly towards supporting our current and future bursary pupils and expanding our partnerships work within the local community and further afield.

The enthusiasm from the Pauline community in participating in our virtual and on-site challenges and embracing the overall Giving Day challenge of #OpeningDoorsTo StPauls exceeded our expectations.

Our particular thanks go to our Challenge Donors, whose sponsorship enabled us to run the 31 Giving Day challenges, and all the members of our community who supported the St Paul’s Development and Engagement team in their delivery of this successful project.

We look forward to our next Giving Day in 2023.

USA COLET FOUNDATION BURSARY APPEAL

The USA Colet Foundation Bursary was established in 2020 to provide a meaningful and affordable way for our American community to support the bursary element of the Shaping Our Future vision.

The USA is home to the largest constituency of Old Paulines outside London and, on average, 33 students per year go to US Universities after they leave the school.

The USA Colet Foundation Bursary will be one of our named bursary places and our target is to raise $252,000 over seven years to fund a full bursary place for one pupil.

THOMAS GRESHAM BURSARY AWARD

The Thomas Gresham Bursary Award (part of Pauls4All) was founded in 2017 by four Upper Eighth pupils as a pupil-led appeal which seeks to provide a 100% bursary award for the highest performing boy at 11+ who requires financial support. The committee currently supports the fees of two pupils.

The 2020/21 Thomas Gresham Committee faced the unprecedented challenges of fundraising in a virtual world. Still, their sense of adventure and creativity led to a successful virtual quiz night, a readathon in the junior school, and running the on-site activities for Giving Day, finishing the year in style with the first Thomas Gresham Appeal Mufti Day.

The 2020/21 Thomas Gresham Committee have raised an astonishing £37,951.20, which brings the total amount raised since 2017 to £145,815.

“Many of us within the OP Community have our own stories of how St Paul’s changed our lives. By donating to the Shaping Our Future campaign, we can all make the gift of a transformative educational experience to future generations of talented students. I cannot think of a better and more impactful way to make a difference.”

THE 1509 SOCIETY A whole community’s involvement – the impact of regular giving

One of the most important ambitions of our campaign is the scale of participation within our community.

We hoped that everyone in the Pauline community would feel able to give at a level appropriate for them. We built on the 1509 model, introduced by OPs John Dennis and John Ellis, offering the opportunity to support the school from £1.50 or £15.09 a month up to £1,509 a year, or single gifts of over £500. This model of regular giving provides stability to our current and future bursary programme.

“My son was given the most wonderful opportunity to be part of this amazing establishment and has flourished socially, academically and as a human being. St Paul’s has brought out the best in my child and I am forever grateful”

EXCELLENCE WITHOUT EXCLUSIVITY

Changing lives through opening doors to St Paul’s

Our bursary programme is expanding; we now have 143 boys on bursaries and we are making great strides towards fulfilling our interim target of funding 153 bursary pupils by 2023.

We are very proud of those pupils who have been awarded bursaries, for their resilience, dedication to fulfilling their potential and their outstanding contribution to the school community.

“This student has not had an easy time in the last five years and it is testament to his drive, intellectual maturity and stamina that he has achieved so much and risen to the top academically. His teachers are full of praise in the comments they have passed to me – for his motivation, hard work, attention to detail and raw intelligence.”

Tutor Comment about former bursary recipient

Our bursary programme aims to offer an outstanding education to those pupils who have the potential to thrive at St Paul’s but not the financial means. A total of 113 bursary recipients receive financial awards of 75%+, and this is an important statistic. However, we do provide

bursaries of all types, for those who can afford to pay full fees, partial fees, or no fees at all.

We want to thank those that have supported our bursary campaign. Donors who give individual gifts, some supporting full bursaries, and those regular givers to our 1509 Society play a vital role in securing the present and future success of our bursary programme. Response to initiatives such as our traditional Leavers’ Bursary appeal, which provides funding for one full award, and this year’s fee rebate appeal, which is supporting current families whose finances have been adversely affected by COVID, further demonstrate your generosity.

Our Parents’ Groups have been hugely supportive. We hope to resume the popular programme of regular parent events this year, including the Spring Fling and other fundraising initiatives. The Old Pauline Club has committed to funding one full bursary per year. There have been individual student appeals such as Upper Eighth William Gee’s collection of photographs with all proceeds going to the bursary fund.

In total, we have raised £9.39m towards our bursary appeal. A successful bursary programme is not just about money, and it is now key that we implement and secure the programme’s infrastructure to ensure that we can promote the idea that a St Paul’s education is a viable aspiration for bright young pupils, regardless of their background. Work continues in this area through our partnerships scheme, with support from the Kusuma Trust.

Bursary Recipient

Noah Zhou (2008-2019),

Royal Academy of Music

I would never have been able to attend St Paul’s School if it were not for the generous bursary I was awarded. I was fortunate enough to have been able to spend a total of eleven years at the school and what really struck me from my time at St Paul’s was just how many opportunities the students were given, across all fields, to discover what they truly wanted to do. Over my time there, I engaged in a wide variety of sports, including fencing, rowing, squash, and even played top team rugby for four years. In the classroom, I was taught to logically analyse what was in front of me and not just to blindly regurgitate information from the exam syllabus. The enthusiasm displayed by teachers of all subjects was infectious, breeding a culture of not only wanting to work hard to attain brilliance, but also of enjoying each step of the process; I believe this is right for a place filled with so many brilliant and inquisitive minds.

As I struggled to find an identity for myself as a teenager, it was the unwavering support of the music department that finally inspired me to try my hand at taking piano beyond a hobby. Fast forward a couple of years from that decision and I made my Southbank Royal Festival Hall concerto debut in April 2021, and I couldn’t be more thankful to those who supported me at St Paul’s. Paulines have a habit of traversing an incredibly diverse range of paths, often with remarkable achievements. In light of this, I strongly believe that financial difficulty should not be a limiting factor in any student’s potential, and cannot emphasise enough just how grateful I am for the support I have received over the years.

Paulines excel in a wide variety of co-curricular activities, yet an education at St Paul’s also involves service and the widening of social horizons. There is a genuine desire among pupils and staff to engage in partnership and charitable work, and a commitment to share our expertise, energy and facilities for the benefit of all within the local and wider community. At St Paul’s Juniors, pupils support their chosen local charity enthusiastically (recently FiSH and now Doorstep Library) with various

initiatives. In the Senior School, after a ‘taster’ experience in the Fifth and Sixth forms, every pupil undertakes a meaningful stint of volunteering during their Lower Eighth year. Our School and Charity Partnerships programme consists of four main strands: working partnership with several local schools, including developing skills of enterprise; offering service opportunities in the local community for our pupils; supporting local and national charities; and lastly, building awareness of our bursary offer.

Our COVID response

Along with all schools nationwide, St Paul’s was forced to close its doors to all but a small number of pupils in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Paulines and their families demonstrated great community spirit by volunteering their time and skills to help those who needed it most. Members of staff sewed scrubs for hospital workers and raised money to provide emergency meals for children in the UK, whilst our Art Department produced a limited edition run of tea bowls, sold in aid of NHS charities. As well as welcoming current pupils whose parents are key workers, the school also hosted pupils from local schools whose parents were key workers during the lockdown holiday sessions.

The partnership team was involved in efforts to support other local state schools in their move to online learning, offering expertise and resources including laptops for Pupil Premium students. Heads of Academic departments were also linked with their equivalents at our partner schools to share ideas, resources and best practice in virtual learning.

Partnership Schools & Enterprise

St Paul’s has an extensive community and partnerships programme, supporting local state schools locally and nationally at primary and secondary level. The West London Partnership (WLP), an independentstate secondary school partnership, was established formally in Summer 2020, with the majority of our work linked into this partnership.

Whilst many of our programmes have been on hold during the pandemic, we successfully held a virtual summer school for 600+ external pupils focused on ‘The Magic of Materials’ and Particle Physics, and our Latin GCSE classes for local students from three schools have continued throughout the last year. We were also able to hold a virtual entrepreneurship summer course involving five partnership schools.

We are looking forward to gradually re-starting the on-site programmes of Forest School, Saturday classes and sports days, with the aim to be running a full programme through St Paul’s during the Autumn Term.

Service in the community

As there was very little in-person volunteering available over the last 12 months, our 200 Lower Eighth students participated virtually with our partner schools, whether through Google Classroom-based mentoring, or via our very own Colet Mentoring Platform, designed in association with Ed Tech start up, EasyA, founded by two Old Paulines, Phil and Dom Kwok. This first of its kind peer learning app provides students with 1:1 academic support via the app. Launched during the first lockdown, more than 2,000 sessions have been delivered. 10 other independent schools have now adopted it to enable their partnership work, and the AET chain of schools (56 Schools) and Cognita (80 Schools) are now involved and looking to scale up participation.

Several of our students have supported the COVID-19 vaccine programme in Barnes and, as lockdown eases, we are looking forward to restarting and expanding our other programmes in which our pupils volunteer as sports coaches in primary schools or assist at local care homes and homeless hostels.

Supporting local, national and international charities

The student-led service and charitable activities, known as “Pauls4All”, play a significant part in the life of all the pupils at St Paul’s. This year Crisis was voted as the senior school charity of the year via an online vote by the whole school community and, at St Paul’s Juniors, Doorstep Library, a local charity that brings the gift of books and the joy of reading into the homes of disadvantaged children in London. St Paul’s has also continued to support its link partner schools in Sri Lanka and Zambia. Various whole school fund and awareness-raising events have taken place, both in person and virtually over the last year.

Building awareness for Bursaries

With the generous support of the Kusuma Trust, we continue our work to encourage talented boys who may not have the financial means to attend St Paul’s to apply to the school. Due to the pandemic, much of the planned marketing activity was put on hold due to the much-reduced footfall on public transport and the national lockdowns. However, we ran a successful digital marketing campaign focusing on the 11+ and 16+ entry points for state school pupils and were delighted that five pupils joining the school at 16+ are also in receipt of bursaries and had applied to the school through this digital campaign.

BUILDING TO INSPIRE

Following the completion of our Renewal Campaign and the grand opening of the final phase in March 2020, we have finished the main re-development of St Paul’s Senior School.

We realise, however, that some members of our community wish to support capital projects, and so the building to inspire element of Shaping Our Future allows for provision for the Sports Pavilion and Boat House.

The aim of our building projects is to provide facilities to inspire our current pupils and, eventually, through our commercial enterprises, create a sustainable income stream for our current and future bursary students.

Through three enormously generous donations from a lead sponsor who is a parent of two OPs and two current

parents, we are now within £650,000 of the monies we need to rebuild the Sports Pavilion. We are currently applying for planning permission. Once completed, the revenue from hiring out the entertaining space with this new building will be another source of income for our bursary and partnership work.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have held back on our fundraising work on the Boathouse but we are looking forward to consulting with our wider community and starting a focused fundraising appeal in the near future.

INCOME AND EXPENDITURE

Annual Income Annual Expenditure

In 2019/20, school fees accounted for 85% of the school’s total income. This is net of the 14% Summer Term fee rebate provided following the closure of the school site due to COVID-19. Fundraising contributed £2.6m following the continued success of the Shaping Our Future campaign and the generosity of those parents who donated their Summer Term fee rebate towards the Hardship Fund. The school’s trustee, The Mercers’ Company, contributed the final instalment of £3m towards the building renewal campaign as part of a total donation of £30m, which was being paid annually over the ten-year period from 2010 to 2020.

Staff, operating, trading, finance and fundraising costs, and depreciation account for 88% of the total annual costs. The school provided £3m to the renewal campaign, matching the funding provided by The Mercers’ Company, which is a condition of their generous donation. £1.2m was paid by the school out of income to fund bursaries and other fee remissions, with a further £1.4m being provided from restricted fundraised bursary funds. Retained surpluses will be used to fund other future capital expenditure and maintenance of the school estate.

Balance Sheet Summary

The school has a strong balance sheet with total reserves of £115.5m at 31 August 2020. £110.9m is represented by capitalised buildings and other assets that cannot be realised. The majority of the school’s restricted bursary funds are held as investments in equities and funds with Waverton Investment Management Limited and Rathbone Investment Management Limited. Cash not required for the school’s immediate operating and project needs is invested in term deposits.

We offer our grateful thanks to The Mercers’ Company for their incredibly generous donation of £30m towards the building renewal campaign. We are now looking to start the next phase of the renewal, utilising the remainder of the £50m of long-term debt funding secured, which will include the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors by the mid-2020s. This will deliver world-class school facilities for our community for the next 50 years and beyond. The school does not benefit from large endowed bursary funds, but we hope to build on this in order to provide income to fund future bursaries. It also remains critical that our fundraising continues to be successful and sustainable if we are to be able to support our future bursary and partnership ambitions. This will involve developing additional income streams, such as the hiring of the school’s facilities, the sale of merchandise and commercialising the school’s intellectual property.

We will happily rectify any errors.

We want to thank everybody who has supported Shaping Our Future at every level through our Giving Day and Telethon.

To everybody who has given, pledged or is planning a gift or legacy to St Paul’s, including all our donors who have chosen to remain anonymous, thank you.

* Indicates those donors that have contributed to the USA Colet Foundation appeal.
