2022 Academic Success The 2022 academic year began unlike any previous year. It was marked by flooding and a delayed start due to COVID, followed by rolling absences of students and staff due to mandatory isolations. As a result, very few people experienced a typical first six months of the year. A recent global study estimated that COVID may have impacted student learning to the extent of students potentially losing the equivalent of between 0.3 to 0.9 years of schooling across the COVID years. Considering the potential impact of losing almost a year of education, significant changes in student outcomes were expected, most likely demonstrated by poorer grades and lower ATAR results. However, surprisingly, that was not the case. Despite facing these immense challenges, the graduating cohort of 2022, along with students in all year levels, managed to defy the odds and achieve on par with previous years, and in some cases, even excelled. This remarkable achievement can be attributed to their resilience and perseverance, as well as the outstanding care, support, and professionalism provided by the dedicated staff at St John’s.
The data presented in this booklet illustrates the exceptional academic success demonstrated by all students at St John’s in 2022. For the third consecutive year, the percentage of students across the College who achieved a GPA of B (above 11) or above has increased, in 2022 to 72.5%, with a corresponding decrease in the number of students receiving grades of D or below. Impressively, ten Year 12 students achieved a perfect score of 100% on one or more of their Year 12 external exams, while five students accomplished the rare feat of attaining an A grade in every subject they studied. One standout student not only completed Senior English a year ahead in Year 11 but also excelled by obtaining a perfect 100% score in the English external exam and all of her Year 12 English assessments. Additionally, in 2022, 320 students (47% of the student body) participated in the St John’s accelerated learning and enrichment program, known as SOAR, across Years 5 to 12. Many of these students completed units of work ahead of time, enabling them to pursue personalised learning options, including university-level subjects. The success of all students at St John’s is attributed in a large part
to the quality and professionalism of the staff. The College actively engages in diverse Professional Development opportunities throughout the year, ensuring that all teaching practices are informed by research and identify best practice models. Moreover, St John’s collaborates with major universities, such as the University of Queensland, and participates in research to enhance educational approaches. Notably, the College has recently renewed its association with the renowned University of Queensland Partner Schools Program, focusing on a multi-year research project centred on the influence of schools on curiosity. Additionally, St John’s is collaborating with Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) through the Empowering Classroom Teachers program, which emphasises teachercooperative classroom observations. 2022 ATAR Results Confronted by a COVID surge and widespread flooding of Brisbane, the St John’s Class of 2022 rose to the challenges of the year and achieved the following ATAR results. Ten senior students achieved 100% on one or more of their external exams and five students achieved an A in every senior subject.

While these results are incredibly gratifying, At St John’s we consider student success to encompass more than just a score or a grade. We empower our students to embrace everyday challenges, cultivate resilience, put their best foot forward, and develop into individuals of strong character. St John’s recognises the significance of comprehensive wellbeing programs in fostering holistic student development and that academic success is closely intertwined with the wellbeing of our students. We take great pride in the close collaboration between our academic and wellbeing teams, ensuring that students receive guidance and support throughout all aspects of their College journey.

LOOKING Ahead Education in the 21st Century and beyond is rapidly moving away from the one-size-fitsall model. Students are individuals and here at St John’s their learning journey is too. In looking ahead, the College continues its forward and innovative thinking in creating the optimum learning environment to support exceptional student achievement.
The Introduction of SOAR Science – SOAR Science commenced in 2023 for Year 7 students as an acceleration program that may allow them to complete Senior Chemistry one year ahead of their cohort. The implications are promising, as it will enable these students to concentrate on five senior subjects during their final year of school, potentially resulting in a higher ATAR result. SOAR Program – The inception of the SOAR English Program has paved the way for the introduction of Literature in 2023 and the inaugural SOAR English class is set to complete this senior subject in 2024. Additionally, SOAR Mathematics stands as an established extension program, propelling students forward and preparing them for enhanced academic achievements in the senior realm of Mathematical Methods. St John’s offers students with exceptional academic ability a range of exciting pathways to support and extend their academic ability and skills. The SOAR programs in English and Science offer avenues for acceleration, enabling students to complete their senior year with the possibility of having one or two fewer subjects to engage with. Looking forward, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is actively investigating avenues to incorporate SOAR opportunities across various year levels within their subject domain.
VOICES OF SUCCESS OLD COLLEGIAN Reflections My time at St John’s Anglican College encompassed a multitude of cherished memories and experiences, ranging from laid-back lunches shared with friends to energy-filled festivals and events, such as Goodji and the Senior Formal. Nonetheless, my tenure as College Captain stands out as an undeniable highlight, affording me the opportunity to engage with a diverse array of personalities and experiences.

As a St John’s student, I had access to many resources, such as educational programs and incursions, that allowed me to explore different areas of STEM prior to graduating. This exposure played a pivotal role in helping
me realise my aspirations and what path I wanted to take after high school. Currently, I am enrolled in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland. My aspiration upon completing my degree is to advance into the field of embryology. While STEM is what I’d like to pursue as a career, the Arts have always been a passion of mine, which is why I was so excited to return as an Old Collegian to assist the costuming crew in this year’s musical production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Revisiting the community spirit unique to St John’s was an absolute delight, reminding me of what makes St John’s truly exceptional.

My time at St John’s started in 2011 in the Primary School and concluded with my graduation in 2022. Throughout this span, I accumulated a wealth of invaluable insights and irreplaceable experiences. I acquired a range of real-world proficiencies, such as leadership roles as a prefect, honed communication skills via STEM challenges, and cultivated interpersonal skills through interactions with my peers. St John’s provided the comprehensive foundation necessary to pursue my prospective career and
face any challenges that arise along the way. Through the development of these fundamental skills, coupled with the high-quality education St John’s offered me, I was fortunate to secure admission into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours program at the University of Queensland. Looking ahead, my aim is to excel within this program, achieving a competitive GPA, and embarking on a career as a physiotherapist, with a particular aspiration to specialise in Sports Physiotherapy. I am enthusiastic about maintaining my ties to St John’s through the Old Collegian Association, aiming to contribute by offering guidance and insights to upcoming graduates.
