ACADEMIC SUCCESS 2023

PERSONAL LEARNING & SUCCESS

St John’s is at the forefront of teaching and learning best practice.

We are dedicated to empowering lifelong learners by providing a NURTURING , CHALLENGING and REWARDING education. Our students are active and responsive participants in a changing world, to become CATALYSTS of POSITIVE CHANGE .

Academic Success 2023

Since the implementation of the new ATAR system in 2020, each graduating class has consistently surpassed the academic achievements of their predecessors, elevating St John’s academic success to extraordinary levels. The graduates of 2023 continue this tradition of excellence, showcasing remarkable collective results that we can truly take pride in.

The achievements at St John’s extend beyond the Class of 2023, encompassing numerous other year levels throughout the College. It is very pleasing to see that six out of ten year levels showed improved GPAs compared to twelve months earlier. More than one third of our students received an academic award in 2023, and a further 17% received an academic growth award for improving their GPA by one or more points during the year. This means approximately 50% of our students received an academic award or demonstrated improvement of at least one GPA point.

In addition, students receiving a grade of C- or lower in three or more subjects is rapidly reducing to less than five percent of all students in Years 3 to 12. These results are a huge credit to our students, and equally, a testament to the St John’s skilled staff who invest so much care and effort into their students.

The graduating Class of 2023 has undoubtedly set the bar even higher than those who came before them. Impressively, 23% of our graduates achieved an ATAR of 95 and above together with 46% of an ATAR of 90 and above – that’s a 20% improvement on the previous record. In the bracket of 80 and above, 77% of our students achieved this result which is almost 25% higher than previous years. Both our Median and Mean ATARs reached an all-time high of 88.05 and 86.2.

While the ATAR numbers may hold little significance for many of us, the opportunities they afford our graduates are of utmost importance. An overwhelming 75% of our graduates received offers for their first or second preference into University courses. A career in the law and humanities, business, the arts and commerce are the most popular, followed by the sciences and, quite proudly for all staff at St John’s, seven graduates are pursuing education and teaching as a career.

St John’s Class of 2023 has exemplified extraordinary courage, resilience, perseverance, patience, understanding, and faith, showcasing maturity far beyond their years. Their remarkable character deserves commendation and recognition.

ACADEMIC Growth 2019 to 2023

The Australian Curriculum is designed to keep pace with student development. A grade of ‘C’ in each year level represents the expected achievement standard at that year.

St John’s students have demonstrated on average an additional 15.7% increase in achievement across the College from 2019 to 2023 above the expected rate of development.

Students in Years 3-12 who achieved an overall ‘B’ grade or above (GPA 11).

LOOKING Ahead

Education in the 21st Century and beyond is rapidly moving away from the one-sizefits-all model. Students are individuals and here at St John’s their learning journey is too.

In looking ahead, the College continues its forward and innovative thinking in creating the optimum learning environment to support exceptional student achievement.

STUDENT WELLBEING

Positive student wellbeing has a mutual relationship with learning. Wellbeing positively influences academic outcomes and successful learning improves student wellbeing.

Last year St John’s new wellbeing framework was implemented catering to the needs of all students across the College, the community and the staff. Developed in consultation with the University of Queensland Science of Learning and Research Centre, the framework is flexible in nature to accommodate the ever-evolving needs of students and families.

In 2024, St John’s Faith Mission and Wellbeing Centre is undergoing a redevelopment to expand the facilities to include five individual meeting pods for private student consultations and a larger monitored student waiting area enhancing the duty of care of the students. The centre itself helps to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues by fostering an open and supportive environment.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

This year, the focus is to enhance the professional development of St John’s teaching staff through targeted initiatives, acknowledging the pivotal role of continuous learning in refining pedagogical approaches and enriching the educational experience. The aim is to equip educators with the latest methodologies beyond traditional training, addressing specific needs in today’s dynamic landscape.

Additionally, the College is strengthening its commitment to evidence-based best practices, deepening involvement in school-based research through strategic partnerships with institutions like the University of Queensland. Collaborating with experts, St John’s strives to innovate continually, meeting evolving student needs and ensuring academic success.

OLD COLLEGIAN Reflections

GABRIELLE STANSFIELD

ST JOHN’S OLD COLLEGIAN | Class of 2023

The most meaningful aspect of my experience at St John’s was the connections I formed with fellow students spanning all age groups.

I fondly remember during break time, I found myself accompanied by at least one person from every year level, and the atmosphere of acceptance and kindness, irrespective of the individual’s background, was truly precious.

Before graduation, I received acceptance into my dream course, Bachelor of Animation at Griffith University, which made the completion of school even sweeter, knowing I was embarking on another special chapter in my life.

Embarking on my university course fills me with immense excitement, as I eagerly anticipate receiving the creative training and education necessary to pursue a career in the animation industry. I’ve long held a deep admiration for the medium of animation and the boundless creativity involved in storytelling through this captivating art form.

I intend to stay actively involved with the Old Collegians’ Association and participate in school events whenever possible, particularly in the performing arts, where I formed many meaningful connections. I am overcome with pride when I see my younger friends and peers achieve greatness as I know they will at the College. I don’t know exactly what the future holds for me, but I know I will have all the support I need whatever comes.

When I commenced my journey at St John’s, I was a modest, shy, young individual, uncertain of the future challenges and experiences that lay ahead. I have many fond memories over the past 12 years and experienced a variety of unique situations, all from which I have learnt, and developed myself further.

I have formed numerous lifelong friendships that have supported me not just during my school years, but also as I transitioned into adulthood and embarked on the next phase of my life journey. Throughout my time

at St John’s, I received invaluable ongoing support from the remarkable staff members. They not only offered me and my peers unconditional guidance but also served as role models, fostering a nurturing community environment.

As I journeyed through high school, my passion for science had grown immensely through the support of Mr Chambers and Dr Balmori. These two teachers not only encouraged me to strive further in my studies, but truly demonstrated a passion for science that I too wished to achieve. This guidance and growing passion would later see me pursue my current course, a Bachelor of Science, where I am now studying at The University of Queensland, majoring in Marine biology and minoring in Chemical biology. My desire is to pursue a career in marine research to further

develop an understanding of our oceans and the biological processes that occur within.

In the future, I aim to uphold a strong connection with the College and its expanding community via my membership in the Old Collegians’ Association, of which I am proud to be a part. Whether it involves contributing to College events or offering tutoring support, my intention is to continue serving the College and promote an inclusive, nurturing atmosphere where the potential of new students can flourish to its utmost.
