WELCOME

As the Director of Enrollment at Saint Viator High School, I encourage you and your family to learn about this wonderful school. Our students are faith-filled, intellectually inspired, and ready to serve others. They make a positive difference in the world by remaining engaged in our Catholic, Viatorian mission during their high school years and well beyond. This focus represents who we are and is reflected in our new Mission, Vision, and Values. I joined Saint Viator in 2018, after teaching and working closely with middle school students and their families for 17 years. I am a strong believer in the positive impact a Catholic education can make in the lives of our students. Rooted in almost 60 years of academic excellence, our college-preparatory curriculum continues to evolve and innovate as we prepare students to attend leading universities and ultimately launch successful careers in industries and services that can change the world for the next generation. Saint Viator is a welcoming place, and we celebrate our close-knit and supportive community. We hope you join us, whether you want to take advantage of our shadow days, Open House, and tours, or join us for athletics, arts, and social events throughout the year. Thank you, Chris Bremner Director of Enrollment

WHO WE ARE

Mission, Vision, and Values MISSION Saint Viator High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory community of learning called to provide religious formation and an academic program of excellence to young men and women. — June 1, 2019, Board of Governors

VISION Deeply rooted in our Catholic identity, we strive to do everything well so that through us Jesus may be adored and loved. Guided by the Viatorian mission, all members of the Saint Viator family discern who God wants them to be, discover what the world needs, and transform the communities they encounter. Saint Viator High School is recognized as an exceptional institution where tradition and innovation meet.

4

VALUES Catholic Identity

Fueled by the Gospel and nourished by the Eucharist, Saint Viator is ignited to express our Catholic, Viatorian faith through study, prayer, and transformative action. Intellectually, we learn about our faith; communally, we gather around the altar; individually, we are inspired to help others through servant leadership.

Viatorian Spirituality

Saint Viator commits to the highest standards in integrity, effort, and behavior to best serve students, families, and society. Through a focus on excellence, dignity, and diligence, we proclaim Jesus Christ and His Gospel and raise up communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated.

Community and Learning

The Saint Viator High School family cultivates an environment of kindness for all to feel welcomed, included, and involved. We foster success in life and prepare students to excel in college through academic rigor, engaging the intellect, creative collaboration, respect of individuals, and responsibility to oneself and others.

Educating the Whole Person

Saint Viator forms students who are faith-filled, intellectually inspired, ready to serve, and fully engaged in the Viatorian mission. We work to deepen our relationship with Christ, identify our given strengths, and purposefully meet the greatest needs of society.

FAITH LIFE

ABOVE: Br. John Eustice, CSV, Vice President of Viatorian Identity and Mission, regularly engages with students in the Alumni Memorial Chapel.

SAINT VIATOR STUDENTS ARE FAITH-FILLED There are so many ways Saint Viator students connect with God, find their unique path to living a Christ-centered life, and best determine how they can help serve the needs of society. •

Daily prayer in classroom

Teaching from a Christ-centered perspective

Monthly all-school Masses

Christian service trips

Retreats offered throughout the year

Clubs focused on Catholic social teachings

Every day, students will hear the refrain, “Saint Viator, Pray for Us. Adored and Loved Be Jesus.” It is a continual reminder to connect to Gospel teachings and establishes a spiritual framework of ethics, hard work, service, and kindness that guides young men and women through their high school years.

Intellectually, we learn about our faith; Communally, we gather around the altar; Individually, we are inspired to help others through servant leadership.

Campus Ministry The Saint Viator Campus Ministry program supports the faith life of students, helping them experience an enriching, transformative, and flourishing Christian life. Providing Liturgical Experiences Students serve as Eucharistic ministers, ushers, liturgical dancers, lectors, musicians, cantors, and choir members. Students involved in these ministries receive training and are commissioned at the first all-school Mass of the year. Retreat Programs The camaraderie and bonds that form among the students during a retreat can be life-changing. The retreat experience provides an ideal opportunity for students to step back from everyday life while exploring their spirituality in a safe and relaxed environment. Retreats include Freshmen Day of Service, Kairos, Quest, Urban Immersion and other retreat opportunities. Approximately 50 percent of our students participate in retreats throughout the year. Kairos Kairos is a 3.5 day retreat led by seniors and campus ministers where the value of Christian faith is lived and celebrated in community. The purpose of this popular retreat is to help students identify and celebrate where God’s love is active in their lives. Many students consider this retreat to be one of the most memorable experiences of their four years at Saint Viator.

life and faith issues. Quest is designed to help freshmen and sophomores discover more about themselves, others and God. The retreat is led by sophomores under the direction of a campus minister. Urban Immersion This 24-hour retreat, offered three times each year at the David Darst Center in Chicago, immerses students into real-world experiences of poverty and injustice. Students analyze and explore their experiences through the lens of Catholic social teaching. This retreat inspires a commitment to serve and a passion for social change. Building a Community of Faith Students gather in the welcoming, relaxed Campus Ministry Office to talk, study, pray, connect, and support one another. It’s a space that offers students a chance to grow together in faith and explore themes of Catholic social justice, service, and how to actively live their faith.

Quest Quest is a 24-hour, overnight retreat away from school and home to meet new people and talk about important

Saint Viator and Fr. Louis Querbes In 1831, Father Louis Querbes of Lyon, France, established a religious community of young men to assist the clergy in their parish work, especially the teaching of catechism. When Father Querbes was looking for a spiritual model for this group, he recalled Viator, the saint from his home city of Lyon who carried out similar work hundreds of years before.

Saint Viator

7

Saint Viator lived in the third century and served as an aide to Bishop Just, helping young people develop their religious beliefs. By public acclamation, both Viator and Bishop Just were declared saints. Now, their legacy lives on through the Clerics of St. Viator. For more than 160 years, Viatorians have proclaimed the Gospel as educators and ministered to the needs of others, lifting up communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated. Saint Viator High School was founded in 1961 in an effort to fulfill the Viatorian commitment to the Christian education of youth.

SERVICE

SAINT VIATOR STUDENTS ARE READY TO SERVE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE The young men and women of Saint Viator High School become faith-filled change makers in the world through the school’s robust service program. Our students learn to understand and identify needs inside and outside of their own communities and then provide time and energy to make a profound transformation in the lives of others. Through this enriching process, students develop their faith, hope, empathy, leadership, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurial thinking to address injustices. • •

12

Explore the causes, connections, and consequences of justice issues. Reflect on these issues through our Catholic faith, scripture, Catholic social teaching, and the lived experience of our Viatorian community. Act and respond to these injustices through direct service or through actions of social change.

Serving others promotes faith leadership, self-confidence, a genuine happiness boost, new friendships, and missionary discipleship. VIATORIAN SERVICE LEARNING Each year, students are required to complete a designated number of hours of service as part of their graduation requirement. As a mission-driven school rooted in the Catholic tradition, it is always our aim to enable our students to live more fully in line with the Gospel and Catholic social teaching. We work with more than 70 agencies and organizations where students show their dedication to serving others, including community partners like Journeys: The Road Home, SALUTE, INC., Phil’s Friends, Wings, and Clearbrook.

INNOVATION THE KLUES FAMILY INNOVATION CENTER Saint Viator High School has recently gone through a transformation. Classes and clubs use the new Klues Family Innovation Center, where students collaborate in the subject areas of business, fine arts, and technology. You have several transportation options to consider including taking the Metra and Train Station Shuttle, the Southwest Shuttle, and arranging for carpooling with the CarpooltoSchool app.

By Shuttle Train Station Shuttle The Train Station Shuttle travels to and from Saint Viator on all school days from the downtown Arlington Heights train station. Students who take eastbound or westbound Metra trains, or who live in the downtown Arlington Heights area, may use this service. The bus leaves the station between 7:35 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. on regular attendance days. Southwest Parishes Shuttle The Southwest Parishes Shuttle is provided before and after school on all regular attendance days to and from the following stops: St. Walter Catholic School and St. Hubert Catholic School. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: My son/daughter is not a good test taker - will they be admitted to Saint Viator? A: Think of the test your son/daughter is taking more as a placement exam for proper class placement vs. an entrance exam to the high school. Q: What will registration for classes look like? A: In early February you will receive an acceptance letter with information about scheduling your registration appointment. At this meeting, you will meet one-on-one with a Saint Viator staff member (teacher or counselor) who will walk you through the registration process and your son/daughter’s course selection. Q: What are Saint Viator’s graduation requirements? A: As a college-preparatory high school, we are constantly evaluating how our graduation requirements match up with the colleges our students want to attend. Currently, graduation requirements are as follows: English - 4 years, Theology - 4 years, Social Studies - 3 years, Mathematics - 3 years, Modern World Language - 2 years, Physical Education/Health - 2 years, Fine Arts - 0.5 years, Computer Technology - 0.5 years, additional electives - 2 years. Q: What is the dress code? Is there a uniform? A: Saint Viator students all wear Lands’ End uniform pants (navy blue or khaki) and a dress code polo. Students can wear dress shoes, tennis shoes, or any closed-toe shoes, but always with socks. Students can also wear the Red Lion Jacket, Red Lion Fleece, or Red Lion Crew Neck on top of the dress-code polo. From May to September, students can wear chino-style shorts and sandals.

21

ABOVE: Mrs. Stephanie Spiewak ‘02, Counseling Department Chairperson.

Q: How will my son/daughter’s counselor help with academic planning? A: During freshman year, counselors will work with students to create a Four-Year Plan which will map out a student’s four years of course selection and ensure they meet graduation requirements. This is a flexible document that can be changed from year to year if needed. Counselors also work with students each year to help them register for future classes. If you have additional questions, the counseling team is here to help. Outside of assisting with course selection, Saint Viator’s counselors meet with students individually and in classroom settings multiple times each semester to cover study skills, healthy choices, and college/career discernment.
