ALION FOR LIFE | Letter from the President

Fellow Alumni, Parents, and Friends: As we ease in to the 2022 calendar year, I can’t help but wonder where the last few months have gone. It has been an active, exciting, and challenging school year thus far. As you know, we are in the midst of celebrating our 60th anniversary and it has been a pleasure to meet with so many of you at events and hear stories about your Sacred Heart and Saint Viator experiences. Saint Viator is often referred to as a school where Tradition and Innovation meet. Previous editions of this publication, our website, and social media platforms have highlighted a number of our traditions during our 60th anniversary celebration. If you have not already done so, I invite you to share your memories by visiting www.saintviator.com/about/60th-anniversary. While you are there, be sure to do a little shopping in our online 60th anniversary pop-up shop. Sharing memories instantly or buying items from anywhere are surely innovations that we would not have had available when our schools opened. While we expect technology to always evolve and improve our lives, true innovation in our community has a broader scope. We could easily acknowledge Fr. Louis Querbes as an innovator. In 1831, seeing the need to assist the growing Catholic community of Lyon, France, Fr. Querbes established a religious community of young men to assist the clergy in their parish work, especially in the teaching of catechism to others. This association of young men grew into a religious community that itself embraced innovation. In the 1950’s the Viatorians and the Religious of Sacred Heart of Mary had the foresight to continue that vision in growing communities by building new high schools to serve young men and women. In the 1970’s Saint Viator High School launched a unique academic experience focused on specific areas of study, and today we are planning the classroom of the future. Even our faith has evolved through the development of components like Campus Ministry and experiences like Kairos retreats. Many of those who have come through our schools have gone on to be innovators themselves. In this edition of A Lion for Life magazine, we introduce our 3 newest Distinguished Alumni recipients, each of who has, and continues to, innovate in distinct fields. A great future lies ahead for our school, students, and alumni as long as we continue to embrace innovation in all we do while keeping ourselves rooted in the traditions of our faith and the academic vision of Fr. Querbes, and the many innovative administrators and faculty who helped us achieve so much individually and collectively. God Bless and Go Lions,

Rev. Dan Lydon, CSV ’73 President

Class of 1997 Alumnus Leads in Cybersecurity Industry

W

hen Saint Viator first opened its doors in 1961, shirts, ties and blazers were required. But by

the mid-90’s students weren’t getting dressed up in business attire to go to school...except for Nick Espinosa '97. The reason he wore a suit to school was because he was only here part of each day as an upperclassman; the rest of his time was spent as head of tech support for a local business. “I got my first computer when I was five, and it was game on,” Espinosa said. He went on to build his first computer at age 7 and reports factually, not boastfully, that he broke into his first government site at age 14. He reminisced that “Fr. Bolser used to sign me out of class to fix his AOL account.” That’s just one of the instances of his high school career that Espinosa fondly recalls. “I enjoyed Saint Viator. It was a great place to go to high school and I couldn’t have done all I did at another school.” While he acknowledges being greatly influenced by faculty members Mr. Thomas Nall and Br. Robert Ruhl, CSV, so much so that he originally pursued a degree in history in college, cybersecurity became his passion. The college path included some stops and starts but one can’t argue with the outcome. While many of his peers were trying to excel at video games, at 19, Espinosa launched his own company, Windy City Networks, which focused on network infrastructure and cybersecurity. “I was the red-headed step-child at the time. No one wanted to pay for cybersecurity but I got in on the ground floor of an industry with overwhelming growth.” He grew Windy City Networks for 15 years before selling it in 2013. He remains a partner in the new company but in 2015 spun up another entity, Security Fanatics, where he has given himself the title of Chief Security Fanatic. The new venture currently consists of about 20 employees, all focused on network security, cybersecurity, cyberattacks and cyberterrorism. He is not wanting for clients as the threat of cyberattacks has entered the mainstream of the business world. “A lot of IT and tech is complacent,” he said. “Companies are not investing fast enough. With every innovation there is, there are plenty of hackers who find ways to get around them.”

4

Espinosa sees the U.S. as being behind other countries in preparing for cybersecurity threats, noting the introduction of GDPR in Europe for personal protection, but being encouraged by the roll-out of CMMC by the Department of Defense. “There are over three-hundred-thousand companies connected to the defense network. We are behind in defending our systems.” Like many other growth industries, one of the key gaps is a lack of qualified employees. “There are five-hundredthousand open cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. alone.” Espinosa cites a lack of training and education in the field as a problem at the front-end of the job gap. He currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Roosevelt University College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Roosevelt Center for Cyber and Information Security where he has helped establish an NSA-certified cyber warfare program. So why do all of us get daily spam designed to look like it came from our bank or why do national headlines focus on continued ransomware cases like those recently involving an oil pipeline or a water treatment plant? He points to foreign governments and organized crime syndicates in other parts of the world for exploiting economically depressed regions. In countries where young people can’t even get a job at a fast food restaurant, a hacker can set them up with a computer and a list of email addresses and let them spend every day targeting weaknesses, especially within wealthy countries like the U.S. When an attack takes over a major system, the millions of dollars paid as ransom create a major off-shore industry unto itself.

When asked if he does work for the government, Espinosa responds “yes” and the long pause that follows indicates he is ready to move on to the next question. While he reiterates that he and others like him couldn’t get much attention in their early years, people are listening now. In addition to running Security Fanatics, Espinosa hosts a nationally syndicated bi-weekly radio show on NPR, produces a daily podcast, has done three TED Talks, serves on the Forbes Technology Council, serves as an advisor to numerous national cybersecurity groups, and is a must-follow on Twitter and Facebook. His “5 Laws of Cybersecurity” TED Talk has been used in college classes and by the Gates Foundation. To the benefit of the Saint Viator community, he is a member of the Board of Trustees and serves on the Enrollment and Development committees. Still a computer guy at heart, Espinosa has become a businessman along the way. Looking back, he regrets not taking some business classes. “I did well, but could have grown my first business more rapidly had I known more about running a business.” He has learned a lot about hiring practices, focuses heavily on training and mentoring, and encourages current students to learn to listen. “You have to understand customers and clients, and what they want.”

As for his role on the Saint Viator Board, he simply responded to a post he saw from Fr. Bolser on social media (a tool he wishes kids could be kept off of altogether). “I realized that the choices I have made in life are naturally choices that serve others. I am in a career where I defend others. I like the Saint Viator community and I want to perpetuate it for the next generation.” So while he is still enjoying every aspect of working with computers, what has changed the most for Nick Espinosa since the Saint Viator days? No more suits. n

ALION FOR LIFE | Fall FromEvents the Heart Roundup

FALL EVENTS ROUNDUP

Alumni Reunions 2021

S

eptember was packed with events as Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary alumni returned home this fall for class reunions. Due to COVID cancellations last year, we celebrated two years’ worth of gatherings this fall. First, members of the Classes of 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2016 took over 80 Proof in Old Town while the Class of 2001 got together at Peggy Kinnane’s in Arlington Heights on September 11th. Then, the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Classes of 1980, 1981, 1990, and 2000 packed the parking lot at the 60th Anniversary Mass and Block Party celebration on September 18th. Finally, members of the Classes of 1971 gathered for their 50th Reunion at the end of September at Saint Viator with a special class Mass, school tours, and dinner. The Class of 1970 is excited to reunite this September for their 50th Reunions after postponing their reunion last year. For more reunion photos or information on your class reunion, visit www.saintviator.com/alumni or email alumni@ saintviator.com.

60th Anniversary Mass & Block Party Thanks to everyone who joined us on September 18th for our 60th Anniversary Mass and Block Party. Alumni, families, friends, and current and former faculty and staff of Saint Viator celebrated with a mass and block party on a beautiful fall night.

6

Bolser, CSV, Br. Pete Lamick, CSV '07, Br. Rob Robertson, CSV, and Br. Michael Gosch, CSV '74 made an appearance. Following the mass, guests were invited around back for the Block Party. Alumni, current and past parents, and friends of Saint Viator gathered for great food and company while jamming out to some live music from the Sofa Kings. We also hosted five reunions in private tents on “Reunion Row” Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary from 1980 and 1981, and the Saint Viator classes of 1990, 1991, and 2000.

Pat Mahoney Golf Classic Saint Viator’s third annual Pat Mahoney Golf Classic welcomed alumni, friends and Mahoney fans from his almost 50-year history with the school this past September. Close to 100 guests came out to Old Orchard Country Club to support “the man, the myth, the legend” to raise funds for the Alumni Scholarship Endowment for legacy students, which provides critical tuition assistance for second and third generation Lions. Before the group teed off for a sunny, beautiful day of golfing, President Fr. Dan Lydon, CSV '73 and Mahoney thanked everyone for supporting and celebrating 60 years of Saint Viator. He also welcomed members of the Class of 1971 who were celebrating their 50th class reunion the same weekend. The day consisted of 18 holes and some fun contests, including a dice roll, a ball launcher, and a hole where you could only use one club for the entire hole. A short happy-hour and awards concluded the event.

The evening kicked off with a Mass in front of the school led by current President Fr. Dan Lydon, CSV '73. Br. Rob Robertson, CSV welcomed everyone in the Call to Worship, reciting a prayer spoken 60 years ago at the 1961 Dedication of Saint Viator High School.

Thank you to the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association Board and committee, including chair Jim Platania '08, Katy Augustin LaMantia '75, Steve Zaleski '04, Matt O’Malley '08, Jennifer Bonifacic Anderson '89, and vice chair Ryan Voyda '08, for all their help and support organizing and promoting the event. A special thanks to Tom Gallagher '71 for taking photos throughout the day.

As seen in yearbooks, gathering for mass on the front lawn was an annual tradition for Saint Viator to welcome students back to a new year. Viatorians Fr. Dan Hall, CSV, Fr. Charles

Thank you to all who joined us in coming out to support Saint Viator High School! Be sure to save the date for next year’s Mahoney Golf Classic on October 6, 2022.

Tax Credit Scholarships Continue to Assist Families at Saint Viator The Tax Credit Scholarship Program, also known as the Invest in Kids Act, is now in its fifth year in the State of Illinois. This innovative program allows qualifying families to attend the private school of their choice by providing scholarships to families in need. This includes providing opportunities to assist families who would otherwise be unable to afford Saint Viator High School. The annual cap for tax credit scholarship donations across Illinois is $100 million. That is a large number, but also one that represents great opportunity for many families in need, and for generous benefactors that want to utilize a strategy to make a greater difference for Saint Viator. Your donation to the Tax Credit Scholarship Program provides the opportunity to make a difference for just $.25 on each dollar donated. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Thanks to the Invest in Kids Act Tax Credit Scholarship Program you can receive a 75% tax credit toward your Illinois state income tax on every donation you make. In simple terms, that

means it only costs $0.25 to donate $1.00. Placing this under the Saint Viator lens, it will cost $180,000 to fund $720,000 in Tax Credit Scholarships. Consider the figures below. Currently, Saint Viator has 60 families that have filed a Tax Credit Scholarship application, and been approved to be placed on our waiting list. The average scholarship our families have been approved to receive is $12,000 which means families in our school are receiving scholarships totaling $720,000. The Tax Credit Scholarship Program is one of many strategies that are available to our alumni, parents and friends to support Saint Viator High School. For more information on this program, we invite you to visit www.empowerillinois.org or www. bigshouldersfund.org. When making a Tax Credit Scholarship donation, we encourage you to designate your gift to Saint Viator High School. For more information on making donations to Saint Viator High School, please visit www.saintviator.com/giving.

Celebrate 60 Hours for 60 Years As part of our 60th anniversary celebration, we invite you to participate in our 60 Hours for 60 Years campaign on March 3-5. Giving the Gift of Life—A Lion for Life Just over a year ago, a proud Saint Viator alumnus, Gene Dougherty ’71, was informed that he would need a new kidney. For those of you who have had a loved one in need of an organ donation, you know how difficult, and long, of a process it can be. Gene’s family began advocating for Gene immediately. Soon, the men that Gene spent four years with at Saint Viator along with many other members of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Viator alumni community joined in the effort. A group from the Class of 1971 and their spouses agreed to be tested, and it was found that Barb Gallagher, wife of Tom Gallagher ’71, was a perfect match. Barb agreed to donate her kidney to Gene. Normally an individual could spend seven to ten years on dialysis awaiting a kidney, but thanks to Barb, that was not the case for Gene. The surgery for both of them went well, and Gene was able to take full part in the Class of 1971 50th Reunion festivities this fall thanks to this gift of life.

At the reunion banquet (pictured above) with members of the Class of 1971 from both Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary present, Fr. Dan Lydon, CSV ’73 made the following presentation: “On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees and the Administration of Saint Viator High School, we would like to present Barb Gallagher with this Honorary Diploma. This certifiGene Dougherty ’71 in his senior cate reads: yearbook photo.

Barbara Gallagher has shown the courage of a Lion in providing the gift of life to one of Saint Viator’s favorite sons. For her example of living our mission, vision and values, we award this honorary diploma making Barbara a true Lion for Life.”

ALION FOR LIFE | From Former theFaculty Heart News

60 Years of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary Each member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary wears a cross engraved with these words: "ut vitam habeant,” or "that all may have life." The motto dates back to their founding in 1849 in Béziers, France, when Mother St. Jean Pelissier Cure, first superior, sought to inspire her sisters to be followers of Jesus, who came so that “all may have life” (Jn 10:10), and to grow in knowledge and love of God. This same mission drives RSHM sisters literally around the world —they continue to serve in 13 countries—just as it did 60 years ago this year, when they arrived in Rolling Meadows from their Province in Terrytown, NY, to start a Catholic high school for girls. They came at the invitation of Fr. James Halpin, founding pastor of St. Colette’s Parish in Rolling Meadows. When he arrived in 1957, the parish did not have a school, so Fr. Halpin began planning for one.

Corbally, Marita (Judith) Cox, Catherine Daly, Bernard Egan, Sr. Matthew (Patricia) Healy, Hope Marie Kulcheski, Mercia (Mary) Miller, Quentin (Mary Alice) Young. Sr. Mary Alice came to teach science, specifically chemistry, and while she was not there from the very beginning, she did teach members of the Premier Class and she was one of the last to leave, in 1972. Looking back, she describes those years as “an interesting time for students and the nuns.” “The students had to adjust to ‘the nuns from New York’ who brought many ‘different’ ideas with them,” Sr. Mary Alice says. “They had strange ideas about hats and gloves, but they also had good ideas about ring ceremonies and class traditions." “The nuns had to adjust to the openness of the people, the vast expanse of the landscape with its lack of hills,” she adds, “as well as public address announcements about school bus routes (right on Busse, left on Algonquin) and the size of the school - about three times larger than any of their schools back East.”

One of his tasks was finding a congregation of religious women to staff the school. He approached many congregations, includ- Donated at Sacred Heart of Mary High School by the classes of 1965 and 1966, Our Lady of the ing the Religious of the Moon symbolizes the spirit of Sacred Heart of Mary which continues to live on at Saint Viator. While most of the faculty in those early years were RSHM, Sr. Mary Alice says they did receive valuable support from the few lay faculty and staff, as well as advice from loyal parent groups.

On Sept. 5, 1961, Sacred Heart of Mary High School opened in a rented wing of the newly opened Saint Viator High School, with a freshman class of 138 girls, or “the Premier Class,” as it was called.

“Teaching at Sacred Heart gave the sisters who taught there a very strong bond,” Sr. Mary Alice adds. “It was a very special time and place. Together, students, lay faculty and staff, parents, and the nuns built Sacred Heart of Mary High School.”

Sr. Loyola Carey served as superior of the convent and Sr. Thomas Hanrahan was the principal. Two years later in September 1963, the new Sacred Heart of Mary building opened in Rolling Meadows. By September 1964, SHM had expanded to all four grade levels, with nearly 1,000 students, making it one of the largest schools taught by the RSHM. Consequently, 14 additional sisters were dispatched to the community. Some would teach at St. Colette’s, but most at Sacred Heart.

10

Some of the newcomers included Sr. Columba Kavanagh, who replaced Sr. Thomas as Principal, and Srs. De la Merci (Gabrielle)

One of the sustaining legacies of Sacred Heart of Mary High School is the Our Lady of the Moon statue (pictured above), which now stands in front of Saint Viator High School. It was a joint gift presented to Sacred Heart by alumnae from the Premier Class of 1965 and those in the Class of 1966. The statue was designed as a centerpiece for Sacred Heart’s iconic courtyard and was affectionately referred to as Our Lady of the Meadows, by students. Yet over the last 55 years, this unique image of Mary has continued to represent alumnae of Sacred Heart and their lasting devotion to their patroness. n
