WELCOME
TO SAINT VIATOR HIGH SCHOOL As we enter the 2020-21 school year, we do so under unprecedented conditions. While fall and winter are usually times of great discovery for Future Lions, we are limited this year by our ability to welcome you into our building or host you at traditional events. Nonetheless, we want to take every opportunity to share with you all of the great things about attending Saint Viator High School and begin building the anticipation for your journey as a Lion for Life. This booklet is designed to share with you a comprehensive overview of our curriculum and provide an understanding of the academic environment that has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School in 2008 and 2014, and an Apple Distinguished School each year since 2015. As you look ahead to choosing a high school, we hope you will join our community of students who are faith-filled, intellectually inspired, ready to serve, and fully engaged in the Viatorian mission. We work to deepen our relationship with Christ, identify our given strengths, and purposefully meet the greatest needs of society. What can you hope to achieve at Saint Viator? Among our most recent graduating class: • The average ACT score was 26, 2 points higher than state average and 6 points above national average • Average ACT score of 31 for the top 25% • 37% of class were members of the National Honor Society • 24% of class recognized as Illinois State Scholars • 17% of class received STEM Scholar Distinction • The Class of 2020 received 431 scholarship offers valued at almost $20M, an average of over $100,000 per student. This included one Evans Scholarship and one National Merit scholarship at the University of Chicago. • 90% have committed to attending a 4-year school • 5% have committed to attending a 2-year school • 74% will be attending schools across 27 states outside of Illinois (22% at Big 10 schools) In addition, we are focused on the spiritual and emotional development of every student. Our new Counseling Center provides greater opportunity for access to not only course selection and college and career planning, but resources for students to deal with the many challenges and concerns that simply come with being a teenager in these uncertain times. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS STEM DESIGNATION
SCOTT R. SCANLAN CENTER
SCIENCE | TECHNOLOGY | ENGINEERING | MATH Due to the rigor of the curriculum, Saint Viator has a history of its graduates being admitted to top university engineering programs.
The Scott R. Scanlan Center serves as a support program for students, freshmen through seniors, who have been diagnosed with learning differences or who qualify after a case evaluation.
We now offer a STEM Designation on transcripts. The STEM designated curriculum is ideal for students who are considering a college major in science, technology, engineering or math. To achieve this designation, students must take a minimum of two STEM courses per year with a minimum grade in each STEM class of 85% in regular and 80% in honors classes (unweighted), and must maintain a cumulative weighted GPA of 85% or above. In addition, they must complete one full year of an approved computer technology class and at least one Advanced Placement STEM course.
FR. LOUIS QUERBES SCHOLARS PROGRAM Querbes Scholars are students of exceptional academic promise, intellectual curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and faith-based concern for others. The Querbes Scholars Program provides enriching activities that foster personal growth, intellectual independence, and faith development in accordance with the mission and vision of Fr. Louis Querbes. Applications are accepted during the fourth quarter of freshman, sophomore, or junior years. Applicants must maintain a minimum weighted GPA of 101% and register for three honors classes for the upcoming year.
REV. MARK R. FRANCIS, CSV INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM The Rev. Mark R. Francis, CSV, International Program is designed to support international students from around the globe. This program provides support for these students as they adjust to the cultural differences and prepare to successfully enter U.S. universities.
The assistance provided through the Scanlan Center makes the college-preparatory curriculum more accessible to these students. Find more information on the Scanlan Program on page 15.
ARRUPE VIRTUAL LEARNING INSTITUTE In an effort to provide for student’s individual interests, Saint Viator High School offers online courses through Arrupe Virtual Learning Institute. The program combines flexibility with academic rigor and individualized attention. These courses are not part of our daily curricular offerings.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES Saint Viator offers 18 Advanced Placement (AP) Classes. Students who register for these classes are required to take the qualifying examination in May. These examinations are based on college-level studies at an additional fee assessed by the College Board each year. The scores are used as a measurement for appropriate placement in college classes with the possibility of receiving college credit. Among the Class of 2020, 310 students combined to take 524 AP exams. Collectively, 84% achieved a score of 3 or above on 524 tests which generally allows for college credit.
DUAL CREDIT Saint Viator has developed a partnership with Loyola University of Chicago (Dual Credit Program) to offer college credit for approved upper-level courses. In this program, students earn college credits prior to their entry into college.

CAMPUS MINISTRY Campus Ministry proclaims Jesus Christ and his Gospel, raising up our community where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated.
HIGHLIGHTS •
All students and faculty are invited to participate in the liturgical and sacramental life of the church, with opportunities for Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration and Mass.
•
Students participate as lectors, cantors, musicians, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and acolytes at monthly all-school Masses.
•
The Campus Ministry Team is made up of 60+ students per quarter leading others in liturgy, prayer and social events that promote living out the Gospel.
•
Each school day begins with morning prayer led by members of the Campus Ministry Team.
•
Retreats are special opportunities for students to spend time together away from the normal routine of the day, thinking, sharing, praying, and getting to know themselves, each other, and God. Students lead retreats each year, and over 500 students attend.
•
The Freshman Family Mass welcomes new families into Saint Viator.
•
Baccalaureate Mass celebrates seniors and their families during graduation activities.
•
Each class celebrates the Eucharist together at their class Mass.

VIATORIAN SERVICE Viatorian Service is rooted in the Viatorian tradition of forming men and women who use their gifts and talents to “raise up communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated.” Service extends the faith-learning context from the religion classrooms into the world through student immersion into social issues and service with community partners. Intentional teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with campus ministers ensures purposeful service experiences.
HIGHLIGHTS •
As part of the graduation requirement, students complete a minimum number of Viatorian Service hours over four years. For the 2020-2021 school year, freshmen are required to complete 10 hours, sophomores are required to complete 15 hours, and juniors and seniors must complete 20 hours.
•
Family Service Day provides the opportunity for families, alumni, Future Lions, current students, and faculty to serve at local agencies each semester.
•
Saint Viator students share and strengthen their faith by leading retreats for students at our partner schools.
•
Campus Ministry leads monthly service trips for all students after school to local agencies.
•
Loaves and Fishes is an outreach program with agencies who highlight the Viatorian Charism. Through prayer, service, and monthly collections, we partner with local organizations and bring the Viatorian Charism to our local community.

BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY Saint Viator’s Business Technology Department offers students a curriculum to explore a range of software topics to complement their interest in the information world. Classes are supported by a continuous program of updated hardware and software.
HIGHLIGHTS •
Mobile Apps Programming I is designed to teach students to code and develop apps that will run on an iPad and iPhone.
•
Personal Finance provides students an overview into various aspects of personal finance.
•
Accounting teaches students the basics of the subject, from accounting for a sole proprietorship to being a bookkeeper for a corporation.
•
In our Intro to Entrepreneurship class, student teams will work through the process of developing their idea for a new business or service, learn to do market research, and develop their business plan.
•
Students interested in computer programming encounter visually engaging graphical problems which allow for creativity and multiple correct solutions with an emphasis on fundamentals of programming in our Python: Coding Through Graphics course.
•
AP Computer Science Principles introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world.
•
Classes develop skills that teach each student to be expert users of the internet in an appropriate and safe manner.

COUNSELING The Counseling Department provides services that facilitate an educational and developmental process for all students. Counselors serve the school community through personal, social, and academic counseling. Students are assigned to a counselor as freshmen, and will stay with that counselor all four years. Counselors are committed to helping students get into the finest colleges and universities across the country.

Our new Counseling Center recently opened providing expanded space, a broader range of services and an environment to allow for more personalized counseling.

Counselors sponsor annual Parent Nights to discuss topics specific to each grade level.

A three-year testing program gives students experience in taking ACT and SAT college entrance exams.
•
Counselors provide test interpretation for students and parents on the PreACT and PSAT tests.
•
The staff includes four generalist counselors and one college counselor. Counselors are assigned to students alphabetically so they remain with students for all four years.
•
Naviance, an online program, helps students and parents gather information about colleges and careers.
•
Counselors help students by offering a college search and fit presentation, college alumni panel, and financial aid information and scholarship assistance. They also host a presentation on the special education college admission process.
•
College counselors work with families throughout the college search to identify colleges and careers of interest based on an individual’s passion and purpose.
•
Counselors visit students in classes once each month presenting a curriculum on important academic and social-emotional skills, careers, and college development.

The Counseling Department offers voluntary support groups that vary based on student interest.

ENGLISH Saint Viator’s English Department develops its students into lifelong learners. We encourage them to be avid readers so they learn to think independently, write fluently, speak assuredly, and solve problems effectively.
HIGHLIGHTS •
The Class of 2020 achieved an average ACT score of 28 in English.
•
The Class of 2020 achieved an average ACT score of 27.6 in Reading.
•
Students can earn college credit from the AP classes offered. In 2020, 83 percent of students taking AP English exams earned scores that qualified them for college credit.
•
The Writing Lab is staffed by English teachers and is open during the day for one-on-one conferencing to help students with assignments for all classes.
•
Curriculum follows the 6+1 Traits Model of writing, which is endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of English.

Teachers incorporate state-of-the-art technology into their lessons to increase student understanding and engagement. Students use NoRedInk and TurnItIn to develop their grammar and writing skills.

FINE ARTS Saint Viator offers a robust Fine Arts program including courses in music, theater, and the visual arts to address sensory elements, organizational principles, emerging technologies, and the expressive qualities of the arts. Recognizing that the arts are both universal and culturally specific, our curriculum is a powerful means of increasing individual, intercultural, and spiritual awareness.

The school recently completed a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art renovation of the choral, band, and visual arts facilities.

Students may take four years in music and visual art. Alternative scheduling for Jazz Band and Music Ministry allows students to have more flexibility during the school day.

Our bands and choirs participate in school concerts, regional festivals, and a variety of outreach events. In spring 2019, the band and choir travelled to New York City to participate in a performance tour.

MATHEMATICS The Math Department offers a strong multileveled math curriculum that encourages four years of college-preparatory mathematics. A solid foundation empowers students to explore and solve problems using mathematical methods and prepares them for a smooth transition into math courses in college.
HIGHLIGHTS •
The Class of 2020 average ACT score was 25.4 in math. freshmen. Students are placed in math courses commensurate with their academic levels.

Saint Viator offers a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.

MODERN WORLD LANGUAGES The Modern World Language Department engages students in language use and helps them become successful communicators. The curriculum is designed to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through the study of a modern language, students build respect and gain insight into the Catholic traditions and cultures of other countries while gaining a better understanding of their own.
HIGHLIGHTS •
Saint Viator offers four years of Spanish, French, Italian, and Mandarin Chinese. Students who wish to continue can enroll in AP classes.

AP Italian has been granted Dual Credit Program status by Loyola University Chicago.
•
For the Class of 2020, 97% of students who took the Modern Languages AP exam earned scores that qualified them for college credit.

Online apps, eTextbooks and a variety of authentic eLearning programs provide high levels of interactivity for further developing students’ skills.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Physical Education Department teaches students to be conscious of their health and physical well-being. They learn skills necessary to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
HIGHLIGHTS •
Students utilize the extensive capabilities of our Murphy Wellness Center. The weight room includes specialized equipment for students and athletes to use before, during, and after school. iPad devices help athletes design workouts and keep logs.
•
Individualized and team sport classes offer students an opportunity to develop motor skills.
•
The P.E. Leaders class allows students to develop effective leadership qualities and techniques. Advanced P.E. class allows students to participate at a higher level.

Health class enables students to discuss issues that affect teenagers.

Polar Go Fit Heart Rate Monitors are utilized in class, allowing students to track their heart rate during, and after class.

THEOLOGY The Theology Department fully participates in the Viatorian Mission and offers classes in which Faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated. Through study, reflection, and prayer, students learn the skills necessary to live as Catholics in today’s world.
HIGHLIGHTS •
The Theology Department is rooted in Fr. Querbes’ teaching that we “are always in the holy presence of God.”

Students study the teachings of the Catholic faith and learn how to transform that knowledge into Christian living skills that will enable them to make good moral choices and be agents of positive change in the world.

Classes help students apply the Catholic teachings at their level of spiritual and moral development, while helping them grow in faith as they mature.

SCANLAN CENTER The Scott R. Scanlan Center is ideal for students who have the potential to succeed academically, but might require more individualized support to excel in Saint Viator’s rigorous college-preparatory curriculum.
PRIORITY PLACEMENT CONSIDERATION FOR SCANLAN CENTER
Students accepted into the program have diagnosed learning differences, Other Health Impairments (OHI), a Response to Intervention (RTI) plan, a current psychoeducational evaluation report, Neuropsycho- logical report, or qualify for services through a case evaluation by Saint Viator staff. Focus is placed on using strategies and skills to succeed academically and on becoming lifelong learners.

The Scanlan Center is recognized as a premier special education program in the Archdiocese of Chicago that other schools are emulating. A unique testing center accommodates documented special needs exam accommodations.

Learning Strategies classes are taught by certified special education teachers.

The staff works closely with District 214 and the Saint Viator counseling staff to implement effective and meaningful service plans.
•
The iPad incorporates verbal, auditory, and physical intelligences to reach all learners. Apps are used to help students organize, innovate, and interact with their core curriculum assignments.

Students must take the placement exam in December. Parents must submit a current psychoeducational evaluation administered by the local public school district or private, statelicensed educational diagnostician. Names of professionals in the area are available upon request. Students must attend the specified registration meeting in February. Students must attend a three-week summer school class (Study Skills) prior to their freshman year.

SCIENCE In the Science Department, students will develop the skills necessary to understand and interpret real-world issues, as well as apply scientific problem-solving methods and inquiry-based skills to a global community.
HIGHLIGHTS •
The Class of 2020 received an average ACT score of 26.3 in science.
•
Teachers use the flipped classroom model of teaching. Students use iPad devices to watch video lectures prepared by their teachers. Class time is spent on more inquiry-based activities and collaborative lab work.
•
iPad devices are used to gather and analyze data in the eight labs that are equipped with sensors, probes, and tracks networked to the iPad and computers. Students share class data and collaborate using Google Documents, Sheets, and Presentations.
•
A STEM curriculum is offered to those interested in an engineering path. Numerous Saint Viator graduates advance into engineering and medical careers.

The Science Club offers opportunities to expand knowledge through advanced projects and competitions.

College credit may be obtained by taking AP Biology, AP Chemistry, or AP Physics. Forty-two percent of the Class of 2020 successfully completed an AP science class.

Field trips enhance the curriculum and give students real-life experiences of the material studied. Field trips include hands-on experience with cadavers at Loyola Medical School, as well as environmental field studies at Volo Bog and the Chicago River.

SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department teaches students to function in an increasingly global society, equipping them to understand and critique various aspects of our modern world in context with history. They learn to differentiate between various forms of government and political organizations that have evolved into those of today. Students are encouraged to challenge their own social, cultural, and racial biases and approach the world with a cultural awareness and sensitivity attained through coursework and discussion.
HIGHLIGHTS •
College credit may be obtained by taking AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP World History and AP Human Geography. Among the members of the Class of 2020 who took Social Studies AP exams, 95% earned scores that qualified them for college credit.

Contemporary World Issues analyzes global issues by studying various current events.
•
The U.S. and Illinois Constitution tests are part of a new Civics course to promote the creation of independent thinkers, who become informed and engaged citizens.

Global Economics prepares students to participate in a complex, worldwide economy.
•
AP History students have published books based on interviews with local veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
