Our MissiOn Saint Viator High School is established by the Clerics of St. Viator and the Archdiocese of Chicago to continue the Viatorian mission in the Church “to proclaim Jesus Christ and His Gospel and to raise up communities where faith is lived, deepened and celebrated.” Saint Viator High School is, therefore, a Catholic educational community called to provide religious formation and an academic program of excellence to young men and women of the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The school will attain these goals by providing a college preparatory curriculum integrated with Christian principles, which emphasize responsibility to society and to the Church. Saint Viator will foster a respect for the dignity and uniqueness of individuals and will challenge students to reach their maximum potential in intellectual, physical, spiritual and emotional growth. Through the full collaboration of parents, students, faculty and staff in all dimensions of the school’s life and governance, Saint Viator High School will achieve its mission by becoming an educational and formational community of faith. – Mission statement established by the Saint Viator High School Board of Governors April 19, 1990

Saint Viator High School has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in this annual report. If any errors are found, we would greatly appreciate having them reported to the Office of Institutional Advancement.

A Letter from the President

DeAr FrienDs... Summarizing the past year in 32 pages is a task too large for this publication. Not only was it my first full year as president, it was a year of change and new opportunities for the entire community. Simply put, it was an eventful year. We adapted to the new iPad curriculum. We worked with junior high students to serve the needy. Our graduating class received record-breaking scholarship amounts, exceeding the previous record by $2 million dollars. Most notably, we were one of six private high schools in the country and the only high school in the Archdiocese of Chicago to receive a 2014 Blue Ribbon Award. This is the second consecutive Blue Ribbon Award for Saint Viator. We were first honored in 2008. While the stories and achievements pour in from all areas of our community, all of them proudly celebrate Viatorian tradition. As we begin a new year, it is important to remember that these achievements are what fuel the spirit and mission of Saint Viator. And these achievements are made possible by support from friends like you. There is so much that goes into offering a meaningful and valuable Catholic collegepreparatory experience. And your generosity allows us to provide that experience. On behalf of the entire community, thank you. Thank you for your part in making the Saint Viator experience an opportunity for generations to come. Thank you for helping us transform the lives of young people, helping them become the men and women God created them to be. Peace,

Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V.

YOur iMpACT We are a community of believers...

LiFeLOnG spiriTuAL GrOwTH Through daily prayer and monthly all-school Masses, students are encouraged to define what "faith" means to them on a daily basis. Under the guidance of our campus ministers, students participated in Masses as lectors, cantors, musicians, Eucharistic Ministers and acolytes. Special Masses include the Freshman Class & Family Mass, the Alumni Memorial Mass, the Junior Ring Mass & Ceremony and the Baccalaureate Mass. These are held throughout the year and are welcome to all family and community members. Students are presented with multiple opportunities to explore their faith on a deeper level. As Campus Ministry has grown over the past few years, retreats have become a significant component of the Lion experience. Last year… • The Freshman Retreat, a one-day, community-building experience, welcomed over 200 attendees. • The Quest Retreat was held three times for freshmen and sophomores, serving as a call to love themselves, others and God. • The Bridges Retreat, which was originated by Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V., united students with peers from Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan, to discuss prejudice, stereotypes and the Christian response to racism and social injustice. • The Junior Retreat, based on 1:Timothy, challenged juniors to be an example to all. • The Kairos Retreat served more students than ever (more than 200), encouraging Campus Ministry to add a fourth retreat to the calendar for 2014-2015. The retreat is a special time for students, an opportunity for them to spend four days focusing on Jesus and their response to His message in their own lives. Next summer, the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association will also be offering the inaugural College Alumni Kairos.

We are a community inspired to serve...

Saint Viator's commitment to Christian service reached communities far outside of the northwest suburbs of Chicago last year. Students learned that they have an obligation to the world, completing a minimum of 25 hours and an average of over 35 hours of service to others. Throughout the 2013-2014 academic year: • Students attended 50 after-school service trips to area soup kitchens, nursing homes and more. • Christian service trips were made to Pennsylvania, Central America, the Mississippi Delta, New Orleans, Chicago and more. • Students served over 350 agencies, including Special Olympics, Catholic Charities and the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). • Our Make-A-Change weekly collections raised more than $10,000 for various charities. • Over 90 students participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, raising nearly $12,000 for the fight against cancer. • Our Dig Deep Lenten Campaign raised nearly $10,000 to help build a well for the people of Bwanjai, Tanzania. • Students worked with local junior high school students to serve community members in need at a new Saint Viator summer camp, Service & Song.

Welcome Home, Premier Class of 1964

sAinT ViATOr CeLeBrATes MiLesTOne reuniOn From 1964 through 2014: Times Change, Traditions remain Saint Viator celebrated its first graduating class, the Class of 1964, at their 50-year reunion in September. The two-day event began at the all-school Mass of the Holy Spirit, where alumni were recognized and gifted with Saint Viator’s Red Lion flag. Later that day, the group revisited old memories and class traditions at a post-Mass brunch and, again, along the sidelines of that evening’s Saint Viator vs. Marist football game. The reunion continued the next day, when alumni and their wives gathered for a formal dinner and attended September Fest. Throughout the two days, the group reflected on the impact Saint Viator has had on their lives since graduating. "There is no question that the discipline and education that we received placed us in a position from which success in life was attainable --- if not assured," said Dr. Thomas O'Keefe ’64, orthopedic surgeon and current resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan. President Fr. Corey Brost, C.S.V., thanked the men for “taking a risk” as the founding class of a new, unknown school. “It’s because of you that so many students after you have been able to experience and live the mission of Fr. Querbes and Saint Viator,” Brost said.

The group formally reunited Saturday at the Arlington Heights DoubleTree Hotel. Front row, left to right: Chris Childers, Tracy Martin, Doug Frait, Robert Shanley and Tom Ostermann. YOUR IMPACT Featuring a Lion Premier Partner... The goal of the Saint Viator High School Business Partnership program is to build on the relationships the school has with our many generous donors by providing more exposure and value for the respective business while continuing to assist the young men and women of Saint Viator. This past year, the Murphy family and Joe Caputo and Sons Fruit Market, signed agreements to be the first of our two Lion Premier Partners, the top level offered to businesses and family sponsors in our community. Overall, the benevolent businesses and families who participate will receive exposure throughout the Saint Viator community via print media, the school’s website, signage throughout campus, signage at sporting events, ads in various event booklets, social media and verbal acknowledgements at school sponsored events. Most importantly, however, is the difference these partners will make on the young men and women who walk our halls.

MURPHY FAMILY Dan and JoAnn Murphy grew up in the Chicago area where they both attended private Catholic high schools. JoAnn attended Trinity High School in River Forest, and Dan attended Fenwick High School in Oak Park. “A strong Catholic education was always a part of both of our lives,” Dan said. The experiences and traditions they share from their Catholic education inspired their longtime support of Saint Viator High School. Dan recalls that they were initially interested in sending their children, Dan ’04 and Jim ’08, to Saint Viator because they recognized a sense of community similar to what they experienced in school. They valued the personal connection shared between Viatorians, faculty and staff, and the students and families in support of its mission. Throughout the eight years their children were students, the family formed multiple strong relationships, many of which they still cherish today. While Dan and Jim were continually involved with sports like swimming, water polo and football, some of their greatest memories are from Mrs. Majka’s AP Physics class, and AP Literature with Brother Ruhl, C.S.V., and his unforgettably dry sense of humor. Jim noted he will always cherish the time he spent with his counselor, Br. Rob (Robertson), C.S.V., and the invaluable advice he shared with him as he prepared for college. “What makes Saint Viator so special is that there are so many in the Viator family that feel the same way about giving their time, talent and wealth,” JoAnn said. “It’s a community that can stir the passion in everyone.” The opportunity to support young people and their development through Catholic-based education is personally important to the Murphy’s because they understand first-hand the significance it can have on a student and as a family. “Saint Viator becomes a part of the very fabric defining who you are,” JoAnn said. “We will always feel that we have received from Saint Viator much more than we could ever give.”

Faculty, Staff and Administration Impact...

reCOGniZeD wiTH BLue riBBOn AwArD Saint Viator High School is blessed with many individuals that donate their time, talent and treasure to make an impact on our current students. One group that donates their time and talent, often without the acknowledgement they deserve, are the teachers, staff and administration of the school. The investment they make in our young adults is priceless. Coupled with the ‘treasure’ that so many generous individuals donate to Saint Viator, the faculty, staff and administration are able to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of young people each year. Their impact was honored recently as Saint Viator High School was named by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School. This is the second consecutive Blue Ribbon Award for Saint Viator; the school received this prestigious award for the first time in 2008, and is a direct reflection of the difference our faculty, staff and administration is making on a daily basis. Of the 30,000 private schools across the country, Saint Viator is one of 50 that are being recognized this year. Out of the 337 total schools to be named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School, Saint Viator is one of only 6 private high schools. President Rev. Corey Brost, C.S.V. and Principal Eileen Manno traveled to Washington, D.C. Nov. 11 to accept this award on behalf of the Saint Viator High School community. This Blue Ribbon award recognizes Saint Viator High School’s on-going commitment to the academic, spiritual and emotional growth of our students by providing the curriculum, technology, facilities and programs students need to succeed in an ever-changing world. Saint Viator was recognized for the integration of technology into curriculum, the Reverend Mark R. Francis, C.S.V. International Program, the Campus Ministry program, the Christian Service program, and the Father Louis Querbes Scholars program. Also highlighted were the Class of 2014’s composite ACT score of 26.3 and the drug testing program. Saint Viator High School was honored with a National Blue Ribbon in 2008, the first year the school applied for the award. “I am very proud to be part of the Saint Viator High School community,” said Brost. “This award recognizes the hard work, dedication and success of our administration, faculty, staff and all our students. Academic excellence, faith formation, increased student achievement and building a curriculum that will prepare our students to face the realities of life in the 21st century remain the focus of everything that we do at Saint Viator High School. We are committed to building an even stronger curriculum and academic program for the future. My deep thanks go to everyone who has helped Saint Viator to achieve this singular recognition.”
