From the Editor

Botswana’s Gambling Industry is set for the next step in its phenomenal growth as it prepares to issue a number of licences beyond its existing land-based casinos. Under the stewardship of a new CEO, the country’s timing of the new legalised verticals cannot be better, as it plays host to the IAGR (International Association of Gaming Regulators) Annual Conference in Gaborone in October this year. The country’s gaming authority will relish the opportunity to showcase its prowess and regulated environment to its international peers when they visit this vibrant country.

Sun International’s record-breaking prize money for tables tournaments has seen invigorated interest in Baccarat, a table game that continues to see growth across land-based properties. And, as land-based gaming returns to its rightful place post-pandemic and continues to post impressive growth numbers, Tsogo Sun’s most recent annual results show Africa’s largest gaming group experiencing a strong rebound in the past financial year, with a R1bn debt reduction as well as a name change for its gaming arm. Highlights from Tsogo’s results are detailed in this issue.

Also in this issue, we showcase the success of umAfrika Gaming Technology, a proudly Level-1 BBBEE gaming supplier, whose Legal and Compliance Director Pramodh Munbodh outlines how umAfrika’s success has a knock-on effect for customers through procurement elements of their own BEE scorecards by multiplying invoice spend by up to 162%.

Botswana Gambling Set for Growth Amid Legalization of New Verticals

Botswana, one of the most respected legalised gambling jurisdictions in Africa is set to take its gaming industry to the next level under the guidance on new CEO Peter Kesitilwe with the country’s recent announcement of a slew of new initiatives allowing gambling across a number of new verticals including LPMs (Limited Payout Slot Machines), Route Operations, Site Operations, Independent Site Operations, Bookmaking and Totalizator licences.

The Gambling Authority of Botswana’s recent publication of invitations for new gaming license applications for betting, bingo, and limited payout machines, before rolling out more casino licenses in the coming years is in keepeing with the Authority’s responsibility of contributing to Botswana’s transformational agenda and socio-economic development by diversifying the gaming industry.

According to Peter Kesitilwe, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Gambling Authority, there is huge potential to develop Botswana’s gambling and gaming industry as it is still nascent.

“The growth of online gaming and betting is a crucial factor pushing the expansion of the worldwide gambling business. As we endeavor to significantly alter Botswana’s gambling industry through safe gaming, this presents latent value chain opportunities,” he said.

Figures gleaned from the Gambling Authority’s 2021-22 Annual Report indicate that the industry is showing signs of recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, generating P173-million (approx. US$12,8million) in 2022 from P211-million (approx. US$15,6million)in 2020. Globally, the gambling market

Baccarat Popularity Grows in Africa with Massive Prize Tournaments

Sun International’s recent Black Opal Baccarat Tournament has skyrocketed the popularity of the traditional table-game of Baccarat with its multi-million rand prize money. Immensely popular in Asia, baccarat is beginning to take hold in South Africa on the back of its accessibility and vibrant social gameplay, driven by high-profile tournaments by Sun International.

The culmination of this recent surge in interest took place when a patron fought her way past 59 other contestants to earn the title of ‘2023 Black Opal Champion’ and take home the R1.5-million grand prize in the finale of Sun International’s nationwide gaming extravaganza that took place last week at Carnival City. A further R1-million in cash and prizes was given away on the day to take the total finale prize money up to R2.5 million and mark Black Opal as one of the richest gaming tournaments in the country.

“It’s incredibly exciting to host the finale of a groupwide tournament and present Sun International as a unified brand. Carnival City is a uniquely themed casino and the finale gives us the opportunity to showcase its magic. We’re known as the home of baccarat and the game enjoys a strong following here,” said Carnival City General Manager Annemie Turk.

Punters had fought tooth and nail over 10 weeks of white-hot action at Sun International casinos around South Africa and via the group’s SunBet online betting platform to lay claim to a seat at the finale. The opportunity to participate in a gaming extravaganza like Black Opal is a hallmark of Sun International’s Sun MVG loyalty programme, among a host of other exclusive offers and benefits. During the three-table heats held throughout the afternoon, finalists were urged to press

In 2018-19, casinos accounted for 71 percent of revenue generated by the South African gambling industry, followed by betting at 13.3 percent and bingo at 6.2 percent. Fast forward to 2020, online sports betting accounts for 43.8 percent of the market while the contribution of casinos has drastically dropped to 43.1 percent.

their luck in a bid to earn more chips than their rivals and earn a coveted spot at the final table. The gameplay was intense as bettors made their picks on a day punctuated by air-punches, groans, and fierce debate.

“These tournaments are all about fun, camaraderie, and recognising the value our customers add to the group. Our next big tournament will be the roulette-focused Black Pearl at Sibaya Casino in Durban. We certainly want to meet our customers’ high expectations and continue to deliver gaming of the highest standard,” said Maartin Olckers, Sun International’s Gaming Product Manager.

Wild Coast Sun Unveils Exclusive New HighLimit Salon Privé

High rollers at Wild Coast Sun Resort can now enjoy placing their bets in a lavish, newly renovated Salon Privé at the four-star beach resort which is 5km away from Port Edward.

Wild Coast Sun General Manager Peter Tshidi said the Salon Privé refurbishment was part of the property’s extensive improvements. “We are not finished yet – we have more exciting news about new additions which will be announced later this year – but we are getting better and better, and this latest stylish upgrade only serves to propel us forward.”

Since the newly refurbished Salon Privé opened at the end of April 2023, eight jackpots totalling R2,5-million have been won.

Exclusive to Platinum and Diamond Most Valued Guests, the new Salon Privé exudes the feel of an exclusive boutique hotel, said interior designer David Muirhead, of David Muirhead & Associates who answered the hotel’s brief to create a practical yet luxurious environment

which optimised the space. The renovation sees a formal entrance lobby created for the Salon Privé, which gives one the sense of having ‘arrived’.

“We have created a more comfortable Tables area, including a space for dining, and increased the size of the Slots area to offer an additional 15 Slots machines,” Muirhead said of the modern take on the exclusive casino space, which gives guests the feeling of being onboard an exclusive cruise liner.

“Each Salon Privé is unique to their clientele, as we want them to feel comfortable in their surroundings. This led to Wild Coast Sun being very colourful.”

Fabrics are in cool colours to match the ocean, from the vibrant blue painted wall

panelling and swimming fish carpet, which contrast with red velvet chairs. A touch of glamour is provided by the onyx marble backlit bar, tropical wall paper with palms, and gold Versace wallpaper. All the artwork is original, including an enormous canvas by Luke Batha in the slots area, commissioned especially for the project.

As the iGaming market in Africa continues to develop, so do players’ taste and needs. As the market matures, the content players are seeking is changing and non-traditional slot titles are increasingly becoming more prominent across the continent, with Crash Games specifically seeing an immense amount of growth in recent years.

This growing appetite for the Crash Game vertical has seen Pragmatic Play’s innovative title Spaceman performing exceptionally well. The title will have players asking, “How far can the Spaceman fly?”, empowering players and allowing them to make real-time decisions to preempt the title character’s crash. As Spaceman flies, he incrementally increases the value of the overall win, but so do his chances of crashing —a design that ensures a thrilling experience.

Brave explorers who can hold their nerve

can gain the slot’s huge 5,000x max win. The title offers players a cash-out option at any time where they can secure the amount won so far but will go on to show how far he would have travelled. This risk and reward factor adds to the engagement and in-game chat allows players to communicate with each other, adding an interactive element to the game. A unique 50% cash-out feature is also provided which allows players to cash-out half their bet and continue to play with the other half of their stake.

With multiple betting and cash-out options, players can develop unique strategies on how best to enjoy the title and personalise the experience in a way that suits their own betting style. As online casinos further evolve, there is a desire from bettors to have more customisable and interactive experiences, similar to the world of online gaming. With speedy outcomes, a highly social atmosphere and detailed bet history, Spaceman™ takes player engagement to a new stratosphere.

Spaceman™ has been so well received in global markets that Pragmatic Play began reeling in a new Crash Game, Big Bass Crash™. The theme of the new Crash Game builds on the popularity of one of the supplier’s most prevalent franchises Big Bass Bonanza™. The game blends the aesthetic, theme and characters of the beloved slot with the Crash genre to deliver players a transformative experience that still feels familiar. This means fans of the franchise can now experience Big Bass in a whole new setting and operators have an additional cross sell opportunity.

As players seek new thrills across Africa, the Crash Game genre has quickly grown from a niche product to a staple product in most online casinos. Crash titles uniquely position player decisions with risk and reward factors to deliver excitement and provide real-time interaction. These elements have transformed what players have come to expect from a title and we are confident that the popularity of Crash Games has only just begun across the continent.

Tsogo Sun Boosts Income and Plans Name Change for Gaming Entity

Some of the recent highlights from Tsogo Sun’s annual results as well as news from Africa’s largest gaming group include a strong rebound in the past financial year, a R1bn debt reduction as well as a name change for its gaming arm.

ThTsogo Sun Gaming, the largest JSE-listed casino and leisure group in terms of market cap, tripled dividends for the full-year ended 31 March 2023.

On the back of a strong rebound, the group reported a 27% surge in both income (to R11.3 billion) and Ebitda which saw it declaring a final gross cash dividend of 57 cents per share for the year from ‘distributable reserves’.

FY2023 financial highlights:

• Income – R11.3 billion, up 27%

• Operating costs – (R7.3 billion), up 27%

• Ebitda – R4 billion, up 27%

• Adjusted Ebitda (including leases) – R3.9 billion, up 28%

• Headline earnings – R1.6 billion, up 38%

• Earnings per share – 167 cents, up 25%

• Headline earnings per share – 152 cents, up 38%

• Final dividend per share – 57 cents, up 200%

• Net interest-bearing debt and guarantees – R8 billion, down 11%

Casinos

Notwithstanding the shortfall of income in casinos that is evident post the pandemic, a strong EBITDA was still achieved. As a result of unprecedented levels of load shedding, high fuel and food prices and increased interest rates, revenue is expected to remain under pressure in the short term. What is of concern, is whether generators can sustain the workload as the pressure of load shedding mounts. Preventative maintenance has been stepped up and the casinos have ordered generators with a combined cost of approximately R30 million. This is in order to prevent a complete shutdown in the event of equipment failure.

The casino precincts have continued the implementation of green energy solutions, with Montecasino scheduled to complete its 4.3MW roof top solar installation by July 2023, which is going to be one of the largest of its kind in South Africa. Expansion of the existing solar plants at Silverstar and Garden Route casino is already underway, scheduled for conclusion by August 2023. A new installation generating approximately 1.5MW is planned for Gold Reef City and should be completed by November 2023. The upgrade project at Emerald Resort and Casino is starting to show positive signs of improved performance and the group is optimistic about the potential of this resort for the future. Overall, margins and cash generation at Tsogo Sun’s casino precincts remain strong, notwithstanding the negative impact of the economic environment.

Hotels

The management of all the hotels is now in-house and Tsogo Sun plans to improve and expand its hotel offering. The Silverstar hotel has been expanded from 43 to 55 rooms from April 2023 and a complete refurbishment of the two hotels at Gold Reef City Casino and Theme Park has been completed and includes new world class conference facilities. In addition, Tsogo Sun has taken up an approximate 10% shareholding in City Lodge.

Bingo

Galaxy Bingo’s trading was also negatively impacted by the severe load shedding that has been implemented, especially where shopping centre nodes endure darkness for extended hours during the evenings. With lower income, coupled with salary and rental cost

increases, as well as the cost of diesel and generator maintenance, it was inevitable that margins would take strain during the year.

Limited Payout Machines (“LPMs”)

As with the Casino and Bingo divisions, the VSlots LPM division was also negatively impacted by the higher stages of load shedding implemented, particularly in January and February 2023. Various projects are in progress in an attempt to further reduce the impact of load shedding at more than a thousand sites across South Africa where VSlots operates. It is remarkable that VSlots managed to achieve record EBITDA of R564 million for the year, together with unrivalled margins.

Digital, Online & Technology

Developments within the digital, online and technology space are progressing well, and the group envisages having more visibility in the market in this regard in the 2024 financial year. playTSOGO, the Tsogo Sun online betting platform, was launched in December 2022 with a unique and quality product offering. The expansion of betting libraries is underway, creating an exciting adventure in the Tsogo Sun online betting division. The new Tsogo Sun App with extensive functionalities for improved customer experience, and a completely new Tsogo Sun Rewards programme offering superior benefits, is set to launch by September 2023. Tsogo Sun Rewards will enable playTSOGO, casino, hotel and entertainment customers to make use of a wide range of options to redeem their points earned, and to receive significant discounts for various product offerings. With the Tsogo Sun App, booking hotel rooms will also

ThDuring its recent inaugural capital markets day, MultiChoice revealed its long-term strategy to transform its business from primarily a video entertainment-based platform to a larger technology platform that encompasses emerging ecosystems.

As part of this strategic shift, MultiChoice intends to expand its interactive entertainment segment through a major venture into sports betting. Additionally, the company aims to enhance its fintech capabilities by launching a new payment platform called Moment.

Regarding sports betting, MultiChoice has formed a partnership with KingMakers, a sports and gaming betting company, to establish a new online betting service in South Africa.

Leading online betting platform SunBet, part of Sun International has signed football superstar and world-renowned pundit Michael Owen as their brand ambassador.

Owen has signed an exclusive deal for more than two football seasons from June 2023 and his addition to the SunBet offering forms part of the betting platform’s 13thbirthday which signifies the start of a new chapter for the business.

As part of his role as brand ambassador, Owen will provide Score predictions,Expert tips and insights and Weekly football betting odds.  SunBet, in partnership with Michael Owen, will also run a number of competitions whereby entrants can win prizes, including signed memorabilia.

Owen burst onto the football scene with English giants Liverpool in 1997 as a 17-yearold, becoming the club’s youngest player as well as goal scorer. He went on to score 118 goals in 216 appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool.

In a footballing career that took him from Liverpool to bitter rivals Manchester United and Newcastle United, via Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid, Owen scored over 220 goals in nearly 500 appearances at the club level.  He led Liverpool to the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, and League Cup treble in 2001 and won the prestigious Ballon d’Or in the same year. His exploits at international level were equally impressive – 40 goals in 89 international appearances for England. He was also, at the time, the youngest player to represent and score for England.

Since retirement in 2013, Owen has successfully transitioned into a globally respected football pundit and also racehorse owner and trainer.

SunBet CEO, Simon Gregory said: “We are absolutely delighted to have Michael on board as a brand ambassador to provide and share his deep insights of the game of football with SunBet customers.

articulate and insightful commentary and analysis which have made him one of the most soughtafter football media personalities in the world.

“As a former player at the highest level, he knows exactly what goes through the minds of players and managers at key points in a match and during the course of an arduous season and brings this to bear in his commentary and analysis,” Gregory added.

“Michael is certainly one of the world’s leading football pundits in Michael and we look forward to him sharing his thoughts and insights with the SunBet family.”

Owen said: “I have come to know South Africa very well over the years in my various roles as a football analyst and I know the deep and incredible passion there is for football in this country. From the PSL, to the Premier League and I cannot wait to share my knowledge and passion with SunBet fans.

“I am thrilled to be joining one of South Africa’s leading brands and one which shares my passion and enthusiasm for football, horse racing and other pursuits,” he added.

“Score predictions are never easy, particularly when it comes to the English Premier League which is the most competitive and unpredictable of all the major soccer leagues – but I will do my best to provide insights which I hope will aid punters when placing bets.”

Sun City Casino Goes Solar

Sun City’s new solar panel project produces enough electricity to power 329 average South African households and reduces reliance on the national grid.

Iconic South African resort Sun City has taken its name to heart and installed a R16-million solar plant to reduce electricity consumption from the national grid.

Located alongside Pilanesberg National Park in North West and experiencing many sunny days, Sun City’s 1.4MW peak-rated, grid-tied solar photovoltaic system ties in at the Sun Central entertainment centre for use around the resort.

The system comprises 2 584 560W monocrystalline solar PV modules on the Sun City Hotel roof, said TM Lesetla, installer and National Energy Engineer at Tsebo Energy Solutions. “These panels will be married to Sun City’s internal electrical

network to feed the power produced on the roof to the points of delivery. Sun City is like a little town and the solar capacity is part of the energy mix.”

The plant will displace an equivalent of 2 367 571kWh per year, with the highest levels of energy production expected in nine out of the 12 months.

“This is what 329 average-sized South African households consume over a year. On good sunshine days, which will be most days, the facility will free up an equivalent of 14% of Sun City’s electrical demand from Eskom, which will be to the benefit of the grid in the vicinity, and by extension, local communities that feed off the same supply,” said Sun City General Manager Brett Hoppé.

From a sustainability perspective, the solar plant will see Sun City reduce its annual CO2 equivalent emissions by an estimated 2 510 tons per year – a positive contribution to mitigate against climate change.

“This is one of the many initiatives that Sun International, and Sun City in particular, are rolling out to reduce energy use from both a supply and demand perspective. Efficient lighting, HVAC retrofits and reconfigurations, water-heating, and a gradual move to renewables all form part of the plan,” said Hoppé.

“Sun International’s sustainability approach ensures we continue to realise our vision of providing memorable experiences for our guests, employment for our people, superior shareholder returns, and genuine value for the communities in which we operate and make sure we reduce our environmental footprint.”

The project is expected to pay for itself within five years, driven by above-average annual electricity price escalations. The plant has an expected lifespan of more than 25 years when coupled with a preventative maintenance regime.

Gaming & eSports Growth in South Africa

According to a new report from Newzoo and Carry1st, South Africa is the largest market in Sub-Saharan Africa, with an expected $290 million in consumer spending on games this year.

The report also gave consumer spending totals for four other Sub-Saharan countries, with Nigeria seeing players spend $185 million, Ghana totaling $42 million, Kenya $38 million, and Ethiopia $35 million.    Among the five countries of the region, South Africa also leads in the portion of the

population who play games at 40%. Meanwhile, 27% of people in Ghana play games, whereas that stat is 23% for Nigeria, 22% within Kenya, and 13% of Ethiopia’s populace. Between 2015 and 2021, people who play games grew from 77 million to 186 million the study estimates.

Among that number, 177 million are reported to play on mobile devices. The study says that Sub-Saharan Africa is “one of the fastest-growing mobile gaming regions in the world.”

“Africa is the future of gaming. Thanks to the massive influx of people coming online and a young and dynamic population, gaming in Africa is exploding,” said Carry1st CEO and cofounder Cordel Robbin-Coker.

“Crucially, this applies not only to people playing games, but also those willing to pay as well.”

How exactly gaming meets gambling is still a bit of a quandary for operators on both sides of the spectrum; gambling operators want to add eSports to their offering, but gaming and eSports largely have a younger audience than exposure to gaming allows. Given this, the addition of monetising skins and lootboxes appear an incentive to gamble... so a tricky road to navigate despite the lucrative opportunities all-round. Add crypto gaming and NFT trading to the mix and the road gets even trickier.

umAfrika is Number 1 in the Industry

…B-BBEE (“BEE”) Level 1, that is.

UmAfrika Gaming Technologies (Pty) Ltd recently completed its annual BEE verification, conducted by verification agency Empowerlogic (Pty) Ltd, and attained a BEE LEVEL 1 CONTRIBUTOR STATUS for the sixth time in eight years. The company was Level 2 for two of those years, which means it has been a Superior Contributor to B-BBEE, as defined by the Amended BEE Codes, for eight consecutive years. The company was verified to the Large Enterprise scorecard of the Amended Codes of Good Practice 2013/2019.

Additionally, the company is a majority Black-owned company which underscores the company’s commitment to the substance and letter of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment.

SUBSTANCE OVER LEGAL FORM

For the period under audit, the company:

1. Provided many study sponsorship opportunities to staff and unemployed Black (African, Indian and Coloured) individuals.

2. Facilitated the access to the economy by Black communities via support to socio-economic development non-profit organisations.

3. Assisted the growth and sustainability of small, micro and medium-sized Black-owned businesses.

4. Enabled learners in its gaming learnership programme to learn valuable knowledge and skills of the gaming industry. We are proud that our learners were subsequently employed by the industry at the end of the programme.

5. Enhanced its leadership tiers through more autonomy and growth.

BENEFITS FOR CUSTOMERS

Since many organisations have licensing conditions pertaining to BEE, or simply just voluntarily comply with the Codes, procuring from umAfrika will enhance their BEE procurement score thereby enhancing their overall BEE scorecard.

Benefits of umAfrika’s BEE score for our customers are as follows:

One Certificate, One Rating, Two Financial Years

umAfrika’s BEE certificate was issued on 12 July 2023 and set to expire on 11 July 2024. This means that an organisation procuring from umAfrika can utilise its BEE certificate at any time during the organisation’s financial year, even if the last day of the organisation’s audited financial year is after the expiry date or after the issue date of the certificate.

For example,

1. Organisations whose financial year-end is on 31 December, and who procure from umAfrika, will be able to use our certificate for their procurement recognition for any procurement from umAfrika during the organisations’ 2023 AND 2024 financial years.

2. Organisations whose financial yearend is on 31 March will be able to use our certificate for their procurement recognition for any procurement from umAfrika during the organisations’ 2023/2024 AND 2024/2025 financial years.

The benefit to customers would be that they would only need to follow up for the latest certificate ONCE and utilise it over two consecutive financial years, thereby saving a lot of administrative time and effort.

Enhanced Procurement Recognition

2.1 Amended

Generic Codes of 2013/2019

If you are rated against the Amended Generic Codes of 2013/2019, customers can multiply their umAfrika invoiced spend by 162% to arrive at their BEE procurement score for procuring from us.

This is because, according to the Amended Generic Codes, their weighted BEE procurement spend with umAfrika, already

multiplied by 135%, can be multiplied further by a factor of 1.2 for procuring from companies that have at least 51% Black Ownership, such as umAfrika.

2.2 Amended Tourism B-BBEE Sector Code (20 November 2015)

If customers are rated against the Amended Tourism B-BBEE Sector Code (20 November 2015), they can multiply their umAfrika invoiced spend by 135% to arrive at their BEE procurement score for procuring from us.

To our customers, both current and future, we invite you to contact umAfrika to understand how we can partner with you on your Black empowerment scorecard journey through procurement from us.

You can contact Mr. Pramodh Munbodh at pramodh.munbodh@ umafrika.co.za for more details about procurement benefits.

We’ve had 49 unemployed individuals come through our gaming learnership programme over 8 years, with 53% of them eventually moving into full-time jobs within the gaming industry and 5% finding jobs in other industries.

If you are looking for skilled, competent talent for your technical operations, please feel free to contact umAfrika via Mr. Herman van der Merwe at herman@grokon.biz and Mr. Ronnie Maisela, Technical Manager, at ronnie.maisela@umafrika.co.za

IT TAKES A TEAM TO MAKE THE DREAM

Our achievement was a team effort so it warrants a big THANK YOU to the team of umAfrika Gaming Technologies (see below) for their commitment to the programme and for making us NUMBER 1...BEE Level 1, that is.

240 Illegal Gambling Machines Destroyed As Asylum Seekers Warned Against Breaking SA Laws

The MEC responsible for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in Limpopo, Rodgers Monama oversaw the disposal of 240 illegal gambling machines, mostly Chinese Roulettes, that were confiscated from illegal operators in the province.

During the 2022/23 Financial Year, the MEC oversaw the disposal of 382 illegal gambling machines (156 in July and 226 in November).

The machines were confiscated from various spaza shops and taverns throughout the province by the Limpopo Gambling Board working together with the South African Police Service.

Most of these spaza shops are operated by foreign nationals, and are mostly situated in the rural areas. During the event, MEC Rodgers Monama raised concerns about foreign nationals who arrive in the country as asylum seekers but end up committing crime.

“This event today is testimony to that declaration and we promise to leave no stone unturned in ridding our province of illegal gambling machines, as illegal gambling has a devastating impact on the provincial economy and the fiscus.

“Today we meet here once again to dispose of 240 illegal gambling machines which have been confiscated from spaza shops mostly owned by foreign nationals throughout the province. A very disturbing observation is that these foreign nationals have been in the country as asylum seekers, temporary in the Republic of South Africa, but their deeds are against the laws of this country,” said Monama.

The MEC said government leaders could no longer afford to watch the country’s economy being looted by foreign nationals.

“During the operations to seize these machines, our law enforcement officials and the police managed to arrest owners and opened criminal cases against them at the local police stations, where later admission of guilt fines of between R500 and R1 000 were paid.

“Unfortunately, this seems not to stop or deter the unscrupulous owners from their

practices, as the availability of the illegal gambling machines is increasing at an alarming rate. But most worrying is that some of the suspects are arrested more than once,” the MEC said.

Monama further called for jail sentences to be imposed on those caught running illegal gambling operations.

“Of these illegal machines, 67 were confiscated in Capricorn, 44 in Mopani, 42 in Sekhukhune, 62 in Vhembe and 25 in Waterberg. Although this is the tip of the iceberg, we applaud all the role players for this sterling work. As the province, we are experiencing the proliferation of illegal online gambling which continues to cause serious harm to the gambling industry,” Monama said.

Concern About Increased Number Of Illegal Gambling Machines

Regulators have expressed growing concern about the increasing number or illegal slots operations, mainly owned by foreign illegal nationals in the North West Province.

The North West Gambling Board and South African Police Services (SAPS) have been hard at work combatting the growing trend of illegal gambling in the Province with particular attention to the Chinese Roulette/Cherry master gambling machines which are mostly located in spaza shops that are operated by foreign nationals in some instances without the necessary residential permits in the country.

These machines are used to lure young, innocent and unsuspecting school going children into gambling to the extent that they end up bunking classes.

For the year ending 2022/23, the Gambling Board had confiscated and destroyed seventy-eight (78) of these Chinese Roulette/Cherry master gambling machines and a further five hundred and ninety-seven of casino type machines. The perpetrators when arrested are issued with fines ranging from R1500 to R2500 which does not seem to deter these individuals from desisting from operating their illegal activities. Much more stringent measures are required to win and rid ourselves of this problem, said Simon Mogapi, Gambling Control Manager of the North West Gambling Board.

We call on all social activists to assist the Board and the police to ensure that our societies and in particular our young children are safeguarded from this growing social ill.

In 2019, the Company changed its name from “Tsogo Sun Holdings Limited” to “Tsogo Sun Gaming Limited”. However, with diversified holdings in casinos, hotels, conferencing facilities, a resort, a theme park, betting and a variety of other entertainment offerings throughout South Africa, and given that the Group uses the registered trademark “Tsogo Sun” in its marketing material and the domain “tsogosun.com” as its main website, the Board deems that the name “Tsogo Sun Limited” is a more appropriate name for the Company, and has resolved to recommend the Change of Name to Shareholders for their approval. Gaming Corps has Big Plans for Africa

Interview with Mats Lundin, Director of Sales at Gaming Corps.

You recently announced a partnership with Goat Interactive. How significant is this partnership with regards to your strategy for growth in African markets?

Goat is a huge player in the industry and being able to partner with them is something that makes us very proud. This also feels like an important point in the journey for Gaming Corps. In the last 2-3 years, we have increased our number of partners enormously across the world and a general trend is that once we are established with a few of the bigger players in that market, more will follow, requesting and pushing our content. So, the strategy is very much to target the bigger names and work closely with them to provide branded content that is heavily advertised.

Q: The announcement mentioned Premier Bet’s main objective is to make sure its selection is suited to the preferences of customers in several different African territories. What makes your content particularly appealing to players in those markets?

A: Africa is a region which has had great potential in gaming for some time, and we are now finally seeing this potential become a reality. What we have noticed is operators in African markets have shown a particular interest in our instant win games, such as Mine, Crash and Plinko games. These games are very easy to understand and tie-in to more gaming style experiences which seems to resonate better in a number of markets where slot content isn’t already well established. Combine that with the extremely low requirements needed to run them smoothly and you have a perfect storm that makes them popular both with operators and players in the region.

Q: You have also recently announced a partnership with Betway, which also covers African markets. How likely is it we will see more activity from Gaming Corps in African markets in the coming months and how important are these markets to your plans for growth?

A: Africa will be a big part of our future, and Betway is yet another partner of ours that we are both very happy and proud to work with. We have been very busy particularly this year trying to cover African markets as much as we can, supporting all local currencies and tailoring content to match the markets and the players as we see a similar potential to LATAM where we have boomed over the last 2 years. There are so many opportunities and so many markets to cover so naturally this will be a huge part of our plans for growth.

Q: What are the trends and demographic preferences you have to particularly be aware of in African markets?

A: It’s important to understand Africa is a region consisting of 54 countries and more than 1.2 billion people. This means we have to be aware of a diverse base of players and to make sure our content is localised and relevant within many regions. There is however a large trend across the whole continent towards these newer arcade style games as there isn’t such a preconception within the market of what an online casino game should be, and in reality in the year 2023, the arcade games are far more familiar and understandable to a new audience.

Q: To what extent have you adapted and tailored your content to appeal to players in these markets?

A: We are currently focusing on a very large demographic when it comes to producing content and we do so with a small but very effective number of team members. When it comes to Africa, we already have a product that’s well suited to run there on both higher and lower bandwidth; that’s an issue many providers have struggled to get around for several years. We have also started to localise and brand certain games at the request of our partners, who are best placed to determine which games will be the right ones for their players. It’s important for us to remain open minded and agile, so that we enter markets in Africa with full understanding of what is required to be successful. We also continue to develop a portfolio of sports themed games which resonate well with a number of markets that traditionally only offered sportsbooks due to the lack of infrastructure to support heavy mobile games but that is all changing now.

Q: How do you see African gaming markets evolving across the next few years?

A: I can only see these markets becoming bigger and bigger. I believe more countries will improve their infrastructure and make it possible for more players to enjoy what iGaming has to offer. I´m very excited for us to be part of this growth. When you look at the number of registered players some of the sportsbooks have, if we are able to create games that cross sell well into casino, we believe we can be at the forefront of the movement.

Q: How will the importance of African markets compare with other markets you operate in?

A: I believe going into new markets such as Africa will increase the possibility of triggering new products that we wouldn’t have even thought of at this point. If you want to do things in a different way, you have to make sure you think differently, and you rarely do that when you stand still. We are entering Africa with open minds and curiosity to see how the region will develop. As with all other regions we know the importance of the feedback loop from the operators who understand the markets better than us and will continue to partner with the biggest and best to create the best possible product for the players.
