NIDO DE AGUILAS ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

A MESSAGE FROM HEADMASTER PERRY

“I will be forever thankful and appreciative of the contributions that each and every Nido community member made this past year.”

The 2020-2021 school year was unusual, challenging, and extraordinary and a reminder that the nature of schooling is shifting constantly—and that the pace of those shifts is markedly different from past generations. Many of us grew up in a world where education had not changed noticeably in decades. We had a sense of what school was like and what it was going to be like for the foreseeable future, and this held true for one’s experience in college and as a working adult. That sense of stability has been largely disrupted. We are now living in a world where uncertainty characterizes the future and the people who will have the best chance of thriving in that world will be those who understand that the key to success will likely be their adaptability, not their predictability. This is a natural outcome of the sweep of forces (the pandemic being just one example) impacting the world today. Our goal at Nido is to prepare students for lives characterized by rapid and unprecedented change. We don’t know the scope or the specifics, but we do have a sense of the skills and habits students will need to master the unpredictable tides of the future. We have a great tradition of excellence at Nido, but to maintain that we need to embrace not only the themes of a traditional liberal arts education, but also the character attributes, skills, and ideas that will be essential for the future.

Each day we model all of our Nido core values of engagement, ingenuity, adaptability, generosity, and happiness. At times one of two of these values may be called upon more than others. This year, our faculty, staff, students, and parents showed their immense adaptability in embracing a new normal and continuously adjusting to constantly changing situations. At the same time, everyone showed impressive generosity in their actions—in following safety measures to protect each other, in contributions to the Nido Family First Fund, in their commitment and time given to Nido, and in their work to support those affected by the pandemic beyond our campus. I will be forever thankful and appreciative of the contributions that each and every Nido community member made this past year.

LEARNING CONTINUES The COVID-19 pandemic forced Nido’s campus to close for the first time in March 2020. Overnight, our teachers transformed their pedagogy and showed great dedication in delivering an excellent program online. No days were lost in the transition. Throughout the 2020-2021 school year Nido rapidly transitioned between distance learning and in-person learning according to the conditions of the pandemic and continued to offer a fully online program for families who were unable to send their child to school in-person. Virtual community events to keep us together while physically distant continued throughout each semester. Parents and students also showed incredible adaptability and commitment to learning during this period. Our Health Unit and the School partnered with Universidad de los Andes to create and constantly update comprehensive health and safety protocols which resulted in zero cases traced transmission within the school. Our IT Office provided constant support to the entire community to ensure that technology facilitated the delivery of our distance learning and hybrid programs.

CAMPUS INVESTMENTS CAMPUS MASTER PLAN In the 2020-2021 school year Nido launched an exciting process to create a Campus Master Plan with the services of both Sasaki and DUPLA Urban Design and Planning. The primary purpose of the Master Plan is to identify, clarify, and shape a long-term comprehensive campus roadmap, guided by Nido’s pedagogical needs, vision, mission, and core beliefs. The resulting roadmap will be one that seeks to unify the campus, harmonize individual facilities, and incorporate nature, while also considering the campus’s relationship with its surrounding areas and communities. Further, the ideas generated by the Plan will amplify the best character-defining aspects of the campus and add intentional new flexible spaces to encourage creativity, collaboration, wellness, mobility, connection with nature, active learning, and new uses for our land. The development of the Campus Master Plan is a highly collaborative process involving the community and key stakeholders that encourages dialogue, facilitates decisions and builds enthusiasm and advocacy for the campus’s future. The process will continue throughout the 2021-2022 school year.

The Campus Master Plan will address the seven following areas: ° Buildings and land use ° Landscape and open space ° Access and mobility ° Learning spaces ° Student life and wellness ° Sustainability ° Utilities and infrastructure

PUBLIC PURPOSE: SHARING THE NIDO WAY Nido asks students to consider what it means to be a part of a community and how we share a responsibility to one another. The Nido community is encouraged to act upon that awareness with generosity, engagement, and empathy. Students are not only encouraged to strive to serve, but to also develop authentic relationships and learning experiences to broaden their perspective. Beyond educating students that make a positive impact during their time at Nido and as adults, the school also has a responsibility as an organization to its community. The safety of our community is our top priority. Reopening during the pandemic required major investments in contracted services, technology, training and education, signage, cleaning and disinfection, and other infrastructure to reduce the health and safety risks to our community as much as possible while providing an on-campus program.

Year

The Endowment Fund began in 2017 and is financed by UF 100 of each incorporation fee. The fund is still small but is projected to grow with responsible use. Its goal is to diversify the student body through financial aid and to eventually be able to serve as an accelerator, providing financing for projects and programs beyond what is able to be financed with tuition fees.

The Nido Family First Fund was established in the 2019-2020 school year and continued in the 20202021 school year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support families through a temporary liquidity challenge as well as our external providers like transportation companies, ASA instructors and team coaches that are part of our community. The School held a fundraising campaign and raised over 81 million pesos for the Nido Family First Fund. Notably, the vast majority of this amount was donated by Nido faculty and staff. The Fund was also supported by a significant contribution from our Endowment Fund, increasing the emergency financial aid budget by 300%.

ADVANCEMENT THE NIDO FUND 2020-2021 In the 2020-2021 school year, CLP $159.623.949 was donated to the Nido Fund through donations and fundraising activities. This includes donations from parents, teachers, staff, alumni, businesses, extended friends and family and in the chart to the right you can see the areas they supported. We are truly grateful for the generous support of our community, particularly in what has been a challenging year for everyone. A strong Nido Fund allows the school to enhance the student experience beyond what tuition alone can accomplish. This year support to the Nido Fund enabled us to strengthen academic programming and extra-curricular offerings, fund exceptional students and grant financial aid to more Nido families, and bring projects to fruition in a more timely manner. THE NIDO SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Nido Scholars Program supports exceptional Chilean public school students with 100% scholarships. Nido’s first two scholars graduated in June 2021 and went on to attend the University of Chicago (Mathematics) and Lafayette College (Mechanical Engineering) in Pennsylvania. The School’s founders, Waldo Stevenson (American) and his wife Juanita Keller (Chilean) envisioned in 1934 a School where, “everyone had a right to an education regardless of nationality, race, religion, or economic status.” Thank you to everyone who has generously donated to the program.

Nido Family First Fund CLP $81.700.290 A total of 118 people made a donation to this fund, 85% of whom were Nido teachers or staff. Thank you so much, this support enabled us to provide emergency financial aid to 88 students whose families were going through difficult times financially due to the pandemic.

Unrestricted & Financial Aid CLP $37.222.076 Funds raised through unrestricted donations coupled with those to the financial aid program to provide aid to 73 students for the 2021-2022 school year. This is separate to the emergency COVID-19 financial aid provided under the Nido Family First program.

Nido Scholars CLP $33.787.551 In February, the School accepted two new public school students on full scholarships as part of the Nido Scholars Program. These students joined the three Nido Scholars already at Nido, two of whom graduated in June. Nido alumni have been particularly generous to this program, with most of the funds raised being donated by our alumni community in memory of former teacher Mr. Samy Atala for Giving Tuesday.

GIVING WEEK

VOLUNTEERS

In April, Nido held its first Giving Week. Despite not being able to hold any of the activities in person, 422 donors contributed during the week and we were truly overwhelmed by our community’s generous response. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed by making a donation, purchasing raffle tickets, buying art in the auction and spreading the word in the community.

A special thank you to all the volunteers who have given up their time to support our fundraising and community building efforts this year. This includes the Advancement Committee, the Giving Week Raffle Team, our Nido Fund volunteers, the Nido Alumni Association Board, Nido Alumni Class and Area reps, the Nido Parent Association, Booster Club, Asamblea President, grade and class reps, and so many other parents, faculty, and alumni.

BEYOND NIDO Nido prepares students to attend top universities around the world and in Chile. Class of 2021 International Baccalaureate® (IB)

Seventy five students of the Class of 2021 registered for the May 2021 IB Session – 49 in the full Diploma Program and 26 in the Partial Plan. Of the first group, 98% earned their diploma (11 percentage points higher than the World Average) and 75% earned a bilingual diploma. IB students were assessed on a combination of their non-exam coursework and their predicted grades as determined from their classwork throughout grades 11 and 12. Nido students continue to significantly outperform the worldwide average on course grades, the IB core (EE, TOK and CAS) and overall diploma score.

Class of 2020 PTU

The 18 National Plan students that sat for the PTU (Prueba de Transición Universitaria) earned Nido a spot in the top 100 schools in Chile. Nido offers a preparation for this test through Nido´s PTU Academy during their final semester and the time between their graduation in June and the test later that year. The PTU scores of students that have chosen to study with the Academia PTU Nido have been consistently excellent since its creation. The Class of 2020 had an especially challenging year as some students who had originally intended to attend university abroad changed their plans to seek admittance to Chilean universities due to pandemic and were not able to study with the Academia PTU Nido. Nido students that were part of the Nido’s PTU Academy averaged 665 points in Language Arts and 687 in Math. This included one student who obtained “puntaje nacional”, the maximum score in math.
