In Safe HandS As a reminder, it is our goal to ensure that all supporters feel safe and welcome at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. To that end, on 11 December 2021, the Club launched the “In Safe Hands” programme to help our fans report racist, sexist, homophobic, or other abusive language simply and anonymously. If you hear any abusive language, experience it yourself or if you or someone you see feels / looks threatened, you can text the Club anonymously and the message will be monitored by our Safety Officer during the match. Simply text WFC (followed by the nature of your concern and location) to 66777 and we will address your concerns. Example: If you hear racial abuse whilst sitting in the KRE, please send the following text to 66777: “WFC racial abuse centre section of KRE.”

AHeaD OF THE GAME

Woking vs. Hartlepool United Vanarama National League Saturday 10th February 2024 17:30 Kick-Off

Woking end a week of three consecutive home games with the visit of Hartlepool United in front of the TNT Sports cameras. Tuesday night’s home win against Oxford City ended a barren run of no home win in the league for the Cards since August, and saw two of Michael Doyle’s new signings in Lewis Walker and Jayden Luker both scoring their first goals since joining. It was also Woking’s fourth clean sheet under Doyle, and another big positive was the return of Manny Oyeleke, who got some minutes near the end, as well as a first start for Curtis Edwards. Doyle will hope that the likes of Jim Kellermann and Rhys Browne are not too far away as well. OPPOSITION WATCH Since the last time these two sides met, Hartlepool have relieved John Askey of his duties, replacing him with former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips. After a wretched start to January saw Pools eliminated by Hampton & Richmond in the FA Trophy, Phillips has overseen two wins in his first three games as boss; wins over York and an impressive away win at Bromley an impressive response after defeat at home to Kidderminster to start his reign.

Key to their resurgence in form has been striker Mani Dieseruvwe’s return to the side. After missing most of December and the start of January with injury, the striker has scored three goals in Pools’ last two games to take his total up to 16 in 25 games; only three players have more goals this season. Hartlepool have also been extremely busy in the transfer market, with a particular emphasis on exGrimsby players as Otis Khan and former Mariners captain Luke Waterfall have joined a long list of arrivals as Pools aim to make an unlikely push for the playoffs. They currently sit 11th, seven points off the top seven having accumulated 40 points from their 32 games, seven points ahead of the Cards having played a game more than their hosts on Saturday. LAST TIME OUT Ricky Korboa’s second half double claimed all three points in a 2-0 win at Victoria Park in September, with Woking the first team to defeat Pools at home in the 2023/24 season. Previously, the sides had last met twice in the COVID affected 2020/21 season where Pools would ultimately go up via the playoffs. Rhys Oates’ goal gave them all three points

HARTLEPOOL UNITED HISTORY They were founded in 1908 as Hartlepools United Football Athletic Company. West Hartlepool won the FA Amateur Cup in 1905 and after the club was dissolved in 1910 its assets and liabilities were subsequently taken over by Hartlepools United, who were then playing in the North Eastern League. Hartlepools United were elected into the Football League in 1921 and would spend the next 37 years in the Third Division North, at which point they were placed into the Fourth Division. After five consecutive applications for re-election and with the club in financial difficulties, they appointed the 30-year-old Brian Clough in October 1965 to his first managerial role. He and assistant Peter Taylor, aided by a change of chairmanship, built a team that finished eighth in 1966–67. Although Clough and Taylor then left for Derby County, the team maintained their form, finished third, and won

promotion for the first time in the club's history in 1967–68. In 1968, the s and the United of the club's name were removed due to the merger of West Hartlepool with the town of Hartlepool and the village of Hart – forming the new borough of Hartlepool. The club won promotion in 1967–68 for the first time, though were relegated out of the Third Division the following season. In 1977, the United was added back to the team's name. They won another promotion in 1990–91, though were relegated in 1993–94. They won further promotions out of the fourth tier in 2002–03 and 2006–07, having been relegated again in 2005–06 after losing the 2005 League One play-off final to Sheffield Wednesday in the previous season. Hartlepool were relegated again in 2012–13 and ended their 96-year run in the Football League with relegation

into the National League in 2016–17. Needing to win their final match of the season and hoping Newport County did not, Hartlepool came from behind to beat title-chasing Doncaster Rovers, however, Newport produced an 89th-minute winner to secure their own safety at Hartlepool's expense. June 2015 had seen a change of ownership, IOR handing over to Essex recruitment firm JPNG, which appointed director Gary Coxall as chairman. By November 2017, financial legacy issues from JPNG intensified, with the club narrowly avoiding liquidation after being bought by Raj Singh in April 2018. Hartlepool ultimately finished a turbulent first season in non-League in 15th place.

The Monkey Hangers have played home games at Victoria Park throughout their history. Their main rival is Darlington. Between 1924 and 1984, Hartlepool had to apply for re-election on fourteen occasions (a record) in the fourth tier of English football; however, they were not relegated from this level until 2017. The club's record appearance holder is Ritchie Humphreys, who made 543 appearances, while their leading scorer is Joshie Fletcher with 111 goals.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETINGS 30/09/17 Woking 1 Hartlepool 1

Hartlepool achieved promotion back to the Football League in 2020–21, beating Torquay United on penalties in the 2021 National League play-off final. In Hartlepool's first season back in the EFL, they finished 17th and reached the EFL Trophy semi-finals for the first time, losing on penalties to Rotherham United. However, in 2022–23, the club were relegated back to the National League after only two seasons in the fourth tier.

HEAD COACH Kevin Phillips Age: 50 Phillips joined Pools as Head Coach in January 2024, assisted by Lennie Lawrence and Antony Sweeney. With an illustrious playing career, Phillips made over 600 senior career appearances and won five promotions to the Premier League. He also represented England eight times. Most notably, the forward scored 130 goals in 235 games during a six-year spell with Sunderland. He became the only Englishman to win the European Golden Shoe, and also won the Premier League Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards in 2000. Phillips also enjoyed playing time with Watford, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace. After hanging his boots up in 2014, Phillips moved onto the touchline with equal ambition for his coaching and managerial career. He held senior coaching positions at Leicester City, Derby County and Stoke City as he continued to gain experience in the top two flights of English football. The 50-year-old was then named manager of South Shields in January 2022 and guided the Mariners to a play-off finish in the Northern Premier League Premier Division during his first campaign. Last season, Phillips led South Shields to the Northern Premier League title with two games to spare. His win ratio during his time in charge of the club was an impressive 58%.

ONE TO WATCH Mani Dieseruvwe Age: 28 Position: Forward Previous clubs: Sheffield Wednesday, Hyde (loan), Fleetwood Town(loan), Chesterfield (initially loan), Kidderminster Harriers, Boston United (loan), Salford City, Tranmere Rovers, Grimsby Town (loan), Halifax Town The towering frontman, who has twice won promotion to the Football League, joined Hartlepool in the summer after winning the 2023 FA Trophy with Halifax Town – although having scored the decisive penalty in the semi-final shoot-out, he missed the final through suspension. After progressing through Sheffield Wednesday's academy and signing his first professional contract in 2013, Dieseruvwe played for Chesterfield, Kidderminster Harriers, and Salford City, as well as having a number of loan deals. He joined Salford City in 2017 and won back-toback promotions with the Ammies, scoring in the 2019 National League play-off final against AFC Fylde. He scored Salford’s first ever league goal, against Stevenage. He then helped Salford win the 2020 EFL Trophy. Dieseruvwe also won promotion to League Two with Grimsby Town in 2022, on loan from Tranmere Rovers, scoring the winning goal in extra time of the play-off eliminator against Notts County, and also scoring in the 5-4 win over Wrexham in the semi-final. The 2-1 win against Solihull Moors in the final being his second National League play-off triumph. Last season was spent with Halifax, where he finished as their top scorer on 13 league goals. Mani has scored 16 goals in 25 league games this season, including a recent good run, with both goals in a 2-1 win over York City, and the opener in a 2-1 victory at Bromley.

Blue cards and sin bins to be delayed after talks with FIFA WATCH

T

he International Football Association Board, who decide the rules of football, have proposed plans to trial 'blue cards' for sin bins in professional football

The decision to announce when blue cards will be trialled in football has been kicked into March by the International Football Association Board after backlash from managers, players and fans. Initially scheduled to be announced on Friday, ITV News understands that trial proposals have been delayed following discussions with Fifa. Blue cards had been set to be introduced to football more than 50 years after the red and yellow cards were first brought into the game. Players would be shown a blue card if they commit a cynical foul, or show dissent towards a referee, linesman or fourth official, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has said. They would mark the biggest disciplinary shakeup in the sport since the 1970 Mexico World Cup where red and yellow cards were first introduced.

Blue cards, along with sin-bin trials and other measures are hoped to improve player behaviour. Premier League managers and legends have already blasted the decision, with former Arsenal player and pundit Paul Merson dubbing the blue cards a "waste of time".

CARDS SLIP TO FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT IN FIVE MONTHS

W

oking fell to their first league defeat since September 17th, as they lost down by the south coast. Despite a better showing in the second half, the Cards came away with nothing against Havant & Waterlooville at Westleigh Park. The first chance of the game went to Sheena Nichol just two minutes in, as her shot from outside the box was saved by the goalkeeper. Havant’s first chance came shortly after from some good build-up play, but the eventual shot was well saved by Amy Jenkins. Woking had a chance to take the lead around the 20-minute mark when Helen Ogle won possession high up the pitch and managed to find Kaitlin Howard, but her looping effort on the edge of the ‘D’ went just over the crossbar.

40

wokingfc.co.uk

The early opportunities squandered were punished soon after as the hosts took the lead. A loose ball from a corner landed into the feet of a Havant player who tucked the ball home. No more than five minutes later and they had doubled their lead from a quick counter-attack. The Hawks had regained the ball from a Woking corner and broke away in numbers, before curling an effort past Amy in goal. Kaitlin Howard was forced off just over half an hour into the game with a small knock that she picked up and was replaced by Hayley Giles. Woking’s last clear chance of the first half came when Efrosyni Theocharous played a great pass into Hayley, but the former's shot went just wide of the post.

HT: Havant & Waterlooville 2-0 Woking Three changes were made during the break, with Gracie Price, Trudy Bryan-Kerr and Kaitlin all replacing Hayley, Charlotte Keenan and Nichola Marr, who had subsequently made her first appearance for the First Team this season.

Woking kept battling away to create new ways to score but it just wasn’t to be on the day. Kaitlin had a powerful effort go wide of the woodwork and Charlotte had two efforts in the space of a minute saved right at the death to sum up a frustrating afternoon. FT: Havant & Waterlooville 3-0 Woking

A much brighter half still came with its frustrations and no more so than when the Cards should have been awarded a penalty. Helen was blatantly fouled by the ‘keeper after getting her body in front of the player and was pushed to the ground, but the referee waived away the claims. The visitors were winning the ball up a lot higher and were forcing all sorts of saves from the opposition number one, but a lapse in concentration allowed Havant to counter once more and despite an initial great save by Amy, the rebound was followed up to give the hosts a comfortable lead with 30 minutes to play. A real kick to the teeth. Two of the half-time substitutes in Trudy and Gracie linked up really well to create a one-versus-one chance and the best moment of the second 45 minutes, but the young midfielders' shot was kicked straight at the ‘keeper before being cleared. Sian Hardaker replaced Gracie shortly after.

Of course it’s a tough pill to swallow and on the complete opposite end of the scale to last week’s jubilation, but there’s no time to dwell as the Cards look set to retain the SRWFL Chairmen’s Cup with their First Round fixture against Caversham United next Sunday at the College. Tickets are available online.

AcaDEMY T

Notable academy graduates in recent history include Woking legends Craig Ross and Joe McNerney, Wrexham's Ollie Palmer, and exChelsea and now-Reading's Jayden Wareham.

For the 2023/24 season, the youth and academy setup runs in three stages; a pre-academy for six to nine-year-olds, a youth academy for nine to 16-year-olds, and a full-time academy for talented young players above the age of 16, including an education plan.

PRE-ACADEMY The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

he Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over a decade with the aim of helping talented young footballers make progress into the club's first team set up or in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.

The Academy works with the Football Club's partner charitable and community organisation, Cardinals in the Community (CITC).

The Pre-Academy trains at The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Thursdays, 17:00 - 18:00.

YOUTH ACADEMY Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs. As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy. WOKING FC ACADEMY Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive. Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development.
