Greetings and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium as the Cards welcome our visitors from Dagenham and Redbridge.

I’d like to welcome former Cards Inih Effiong, David Longe-King and Jake Hessenthaler, along with members of the Daggers management team and Board of Directors.

Today will be a very competitive match, with both sides looking for a result. For the Cards, a win means another 3 points closer to safety; the

Daggers, who should be well-safe from the drop, will look to narrow the gap and inch closer to a top-10 finish.

Today, Michael Doyle could have a selection problem on his hands. We’ve seen the likes of Ricky Korboa, Josh Casey and Reece Grego-Cox make their respective returns, and the recent loan signings of Finn Delap and Sonny Singh, but the gaffer’s squad available for selection today could include the likes of Jermaine Anderson and Rhys Browne as well.

I think statistics in a vacuum are difficult to measure, but there is one that has been jumping out as of late. Will Jääskeläinen (along with our defence) has kept 9 clean sheets in his 26 starts

for a 34.5% clean sheet percentage. That’s best among all keepers in the division who have made 20 or more starts. Over our last 15 matches, we have conceded less than a goal per game.

Over the next 15 days, with 3 matches and 9 points to play for beginning today, we continue battling to secure our status in the division. After today, we travel to York next weekend ahead of the season finale vs AFC Fylde here at home.

Woking face an in-form Dagenham & Redbridge side as they look to break the 50 point barrier and take a big step towards securing their National League status.

A good performance at promotion chasing Bromley saw the Cards agonisingly concede a stoppage time equaliser, but Michael Doyle will have no doubt taken the positives from a solid outing.

With this being Woking’s penultimate home game of the season, three points would keep the Cards out of trouble ahead of a trip to rejuvenated York City next week.

OPPOSITION WATCH

Ben Strevens’ side have practically escaped danger, with their 54 point total surely enough to guarantee another season in the fifth tier. Recently, they have been scoring for fun, with a 7-1 win at home to Oxford City being backed up by 4-1 wins over Boreham Wood and Maidenhead United.

Josh Rees is the in-form man for the Daggers,

having scored nine times in his last 11 appearances to take him up to 15 for the season. Also on 15 is former Card Inih Effiong, who has recently returned from injury.

Elsewhere, Daggers keeper Elliot Justham has been ever reliable between the sticks, being rewarded with a call up to the England C side last month; he also saved a penalty from Rakish Bingham in a 1-1 draw with Ebbsfleet on Monday.

Like Woking, the Daggers were denied all three points by a stoppage time equaliser, after Rees had given them the lead.

LAST TIME OUT

Inih Effiong’s stoppage time winner gave the Daggers all three points in a 2-1 win in October, after Reece Grego-Cox had equalised for the Cards at Victoria Road.

Last season, Woking were victorious on both occasions, with a 2-0 win at the Laithwaite in August 2022, and a 2-1 win in January 2023 at Victoria Road courtesy of a Rohan Ince double.

Dagenham and Redbridge were founded just thirtytwo years ago in 1992 following a merger between Dagenham and Redbridge Forest. Both clubs had fallen on hard times due to swindling attendances. The club can be traced back to its ancestry in 1881 when Redbridge Forest was an amalgamation of three of the amateur game’s most famous clubs, Ilford, Leytonstone, and Walthamstow Avenue.

The Daggers inaugural season was spent playing in the Football Conference with their first competitive result being a 2-0 win over Merthyr Tydfil in the Conference. Dagenham and Redbridge would spend the next four years in the Conference before being relegated down to the Isthmian League Premier Division in 1996.

The club remained in this division until winning promotion in the 1999/2000 season and would go onto establish themselves as one of the strongest clubs in the Conference, finishing third, second and fifth in the first three season back in the league.

The club controversially narrowly missed out on the Conference title to Boston United in 2002 after they were found guilty of inappropriately making illegal payments to their players in the title winning season. The title still stood, and they incurred a points deduction at the start of their League Two campaign.

The Daggers would then make themselves a solid Conference side remaining in the division for a further three seasons before securing the 2006/07

LAST 5 SEASONS

Conference title to take the side to the Football League. The Daggers would battle it out with Oxford United for the title that season and on the 7th of April would beat Aldershot Town 2-1 to secure their first taste of Football League football.

The Daggers would win their first ever Football League match at home to Lincoln City on the 1st of September 2007 and would survive in the division finishing twentieth. The following season was impressive with the club finishing eighth and only narrowly missing out on the League Two play-offs after losing to Shrewsbury Town at home on the final day of the season.

However, the 2009/10 would see the Daggers reach the League Two play-offs and after dismantling Morecambe 7-2 on aggerate including a 6-0 trashing at Victoria Road the club were down Wembley Way. They would say Rotherham United and in front of over 32,000 would secure promotion to League One with a 3-2 win over the Millers.

The club would narrowly get relegated in their first season at this level as they finished 21st and were relegated on the last day of the 2010/11 season back to League Two. The club would then narrowly avoid relegation back down to the Conference for

the following two seasons finishing 19th and 22nd respectively.

The next couple of seasons would see mid table League Two finishes as well as some cup entertainment at Victoria Road. The Daggers would play out a 6-6 draw with Brentford in the 2014/15 League Cup but went onto lose on penalties. However, the League Cup paid tribute to the historic match by removing the goal nets and displaying them at the National Football Museum.

In 2015/16, the Daggers would make the third round of the FA Cup as they visited Premier League Everton and would fall to a 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park. The club were relegated out of the Football League eight years after coming into it after a 3-2 defeat away to Leyton Orient.

The club would end up in fourth place on their return to the National League but would miss out on another trip to Wembley as they would lose the playoff semi-final to Forest Green Rovers.

The club have remained in the National League since coming down from League Two with four out of the previous six seasons resulting in top half finishes in the National League.

PLAYER TO WATCH - TOM EASTMAN

Tom Eastman become the Daggers third signing of the summer as he joined following the expiry of his contract with Colchester United.

The Daggers beat competition for League Two and other National League clubs to secure the signature of the 31-year-old centre back.

Standing at 6 ft 5, Eastman joins the Daggers with a wealth of experience in the EFL, spending twelve years with Colchester United which put him seventh in the all-time appearances for the Essex side. He also collected a club record four Player of the Year awards.

In his time with The U's, Tom made 464 appearances, with 180 of those coming in League One.

MANAGER - BEN STREVENS

Ben Strevens made his return to the Daggers as he was appointed as the successor to Daryl McMahon on 10 March 2023.

Strevens, made 125 appearances for the Daggers, scoring 35 goals as a player, and returns to the club following a rigorous interview process.

Ben, who was a part of the Daggers' 2006/07 Conference National promotion side, started his managerial career at Eastleigh, originally taking on the Assistant Manager role.

In 2018, he went on to become the Manager of the Spitfires which featured an impressive 7th placed finish for the Hampshire club.

In the last two months of the 2022-23 campaign, Strevens led the Daggers to a tenth place finish.

The Cards Trust (Cardinals Supporters Society) has worked with the Club to represent fans for more than a decade. The Trust is a shareholder of the Club (and owns around a quarter of it) and has a representative on the Board to put forward the fans’ views.

MEMBERSHIP

CARDS INTO CHAIRMAN'S CUP FINAL

Woking secured back-to-back Chairman’s Cup final appearances thanks to a brilliant performance against Division One North league leaders Long Crendon. The Cards will now face Beaconsfield Town Ladies in the Final at Reading City FC on April 28th, at 11:00am.

Gaby Hobday had the game's first chance inside ten minutes, but her effort was saved by the goalkeeper.

Kaitlin Howard and Ellie Boddy made longawaited returns to the side on either side of the half-hour mark, replacing Hayley Giles and Laura Mitchell.

Shortly before half-time, a moment of pure magic from Bianca Underhill saw her score directly from a corner on the left-hand side to put her team in front. The number two was in pure disbelief before being congratulated by her teammates.

It could have been two just before the break when Kaitlin fired a shot towards goal, but she was unlucky to see it rebound off the bar.

Trudy Bryan-Kerr was forced off seconds before the whistle due to an injury outside the box and was replaced by Caitlin Burnett, making her senior debut after being promoted from the Development Team.

In the second half, the visitors slowly found their way into the game, but couldn’t quite get into positions to test the returning Amy Jenkins.

Bianca went on a brilliant run down the right during a Woking spell that lasted a few minutes and found Charlotte Keenan who placed a great cross into Kaitlin, but her header was saved. Kaitlin had another chance just a minute later when she spectacularly tried to

lop the ‘keeper from 20-yards out, but just saw her effort go over the crossbar.

Hayley and Laura both returned in the 70th minute, swapping with Caitlin and Sophie.

The Cards doubled their lead five minutes later thanks to a fantastic ball in behind from Bianca putting the goalkeeper under pressure, allowing a small touch to fall to Kaitlin who smashed home from an angle.

The visitors grabbed a consolation almost immediately after a mistake from Amy in goal, parrying the ball into the ball of a Crendon player, but it didn’t matter because Woking restored their two-goal lead right away. An electric run from Gaby down the left allowed her to pass to Charlotte who scored on her second attempt to put the game to bed.

An immense occasion for all involved, as the team now have the chance to retain the trophy that they won just 12 months ago. This time, however, the journey to the final has been much better and the trophy is in reaching distance.

ACADEMY

The Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over a decade with the aim of helping talented young footballers make progress into the club's first team set up or in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.

For the 2023/24 season, the youth and academy setup runs in three stages; a pre-academy for six to nine-year-olds, a youth academy for nine to 16-year-olds, and a full-time academy for talented young players above the age of 16, including an education plan.

The Academy works with the Football Club's partner charitable and community organisation, Cardinals in the Community (CITC).

Notable academy graduates in recent history include Woking legends Craig Ross and Joe McNerney, Wrexham's Ollie Palmer, and exChelsea and now-Reading's Jayden Wareham.

PRE-ACADEMY

The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

The Pre-Academy trains at The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Thursdays, 17:00 - 18:00.

YOUTH ACADEMY

Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs.

As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy.

WOKING FC ACADEMY

Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive.

Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development.

Woking FC Academy plays competitive matches in the U18 Isthmian League, U19 National League and also have the opportunity to play in U23 fixtures. Players in our Elite Development Plan (EDP) compete in the Tactic League and National B League. Cup competitions are a feature of the fixture calendar. Pre-season training includes friendlies and there are opportunities to travel abroad for football tours and tournaments, including the Gothia Cup.

Our football timetable is planned in conjunction with players’ education. Academy players can

choose to attend Woking College or focus on gaining the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, which is delivered by SCL Education at Westfield FC. Players on the EDP pathway study towards the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A levels) with SCL.

Woking U17 4 – 2 Dartford U17

National League Alliance – Division E Woking College, Rydens Way

A very good result for the Cards, against a Dartford side they had lost 8 – 0 to on the first day of the season, and who had games-in-hand to challenge at the top of the table.

Coming from behind has been a recent pattern, and Woking found themselves behind as early as three minutes. Ellis Proctor’s flick-header putting Thomas Mitcham through to run on, compose himself and strike across Mikey Verga into the corner.

Dartford had a chance to go two-up after seven minutes, before Woking were able to get their defensive-line organised and establish themselves in the game, competing well against a team who looked to have more second years playing than Woking’s younger side.

With the rain getting heavier Ollie Saword, Harvey Brook and Saadiq Bangura-Kerr all had chances to draw Woking level, Bangura-Kerr doing well to get in on goal, but scuffing his shot.

Woking had their equaliser on 34 minutes through Saword. Bangura-Kerr playing in a fine overlapping run from Alvaro Picon, whose cross was well challenged for by Brook, with the loose ball falling for Saword to strike home cleanly.

Good defending from Picon, and Tom Pine-Coffin in the Dartford goal, kept the scores level at the break.

Half-time: Woking 1 – 1 Dartford

Woking took the lead within four minutes of the re-start. Outstanding wing play from Brook down the right-side completed with a quality cross that gave Stefan Van Wijngaarden the simple task of volleying home from just a couple of yards out.

An altercation between Tommy Seale and Dean Nayler saw them both cautioned; and Woking defended well, taking pride in their work, with Dartford unable to draw level.

And then on 74 minutes came Seale’s great goal. JJ Young knocked the ball down and shielded it so Seale could strike from just inside the Dartford half, the well-controlled power of his shot/lob beating Pine-Coffin, who couldn’t get a strong enough hand on it to keep it out as it went over him.

Dartford fought back well and had a goal back within five minutes, Picon was cautioned for his challenge on Mitcham as he ran towards goal, and the free-kick from just outside the area was rocketed in to the corner by Ellis Proctor.

There were chances at both ends before Woking clinched victory in added time. Brook tucking away the rebound after his first shot was saved. As time ran out for Dartford, a great defensive block from Sean Bull served to underline the foundation of Woking’s success.

A great win for the Cards, and one which has them looking upwards as to how high they may finish.

The second game of the day was against some new friends from County Wexford in Ireland, with Michael Doyle having asked if the Academy could host his friend’s team on their Easter tour.

Although they were a younger side they persevered well, kept up their spirits, did not lack determination, and were a credit to their club.

For Woking, the game gave Ellis Byrne a runout as his rehabilitation from his broken leg continues. After half-an-hour Lewis Mouland was able to hand goalkeeping responsibilities to Dom Wall, and take the opportunity to make an appearance as a forward. This was a game of ‘rolling substitutions’.
