“Die volgende oomblik, toe skop [iemand] my kamer oop en dit is ‘n flitslig in my gesig!

Missing man’s body found in dam at sewage plant

Members of the Rathidili family from Tshikhwani village, in the Sinthumule area, were devastated when the body of their missing son was found floating in a dam at Louis Trichardt’s sewerage plant on Tuesday (4th).

On Saturday, 25 March, the 24-year-old Mashudu Rathidili went to Louis Trichardt but never returned home. After reporting him as missing, the family members, with the help of other community members, began a frantic search of their own. They searched the area where he was last spotted, in vain. When his body was eventually found floating in the sewerage plant in Louis Trichardt, it had already decomposed substantially.

Mashudu’s father, Mr Moses Rathidili, said the circumstances around his son’s death were strange and left many unanswered questions. “We are so shocked, because we have been searching everywhere; even in the spot where we found his body, not knowing that he was rotting in there. We are convinced that he was murdered elsewhere, and his body later dumped in the sewage to conceal the evidence. But we cannot say for certain. What we do know for sure, is that he is dead, and only the police are able to help solve this puzzle,” he said.

decomposed body at the sewerage plant. “We have opened an inquest docket, and the results of the inquest will direct us on what to do. If there had been any foul play involved, we will take it from there,” she said.

Gelukkig was hulle ongedeerd.

The local traditional leader, Vhamusanda Vho-Mbulaheni Ramabulana, said after he had been notified of Mashudu’s disappearance, everyone had helped the family to look for him. “As community leaders, we are very saddened as we had hoped he would be found alive. Instead, this has happened. Yet, we can only commend the community for remaining calm and not being led by their emotions. The body has been found, and we will hear from the experts as to what could have caused his death,” he said.

Makhado police spokesperson Sgt Irene Radzilani confirmed the discovery of Mashudu’s

Dangerous suspect killed in shootout with police at Tshakhuma

A dangerous suspect was shot and killed by the police while his accomplice fled on foot during a violent shoot-out in Tshakhuma (Levubu) at around noon on Wednesday, 29 March.

The deceased was identified as Tshimangadzo Nemaembeni (35) from Tshakhuma. Nemaembeni and his accomplice were allegedly among the most feared gangsters in the area and were linked to countless crimes in the Vhembe area. Both were on the police’s Most Wanted list.

On the day of the incident, the police received a tip-off from members of the community who saw the two suspects at the Tshakhuma graveyard, reportedly helping some people digging a grave for a funeral. “When the police arrived at the graveyard, the two suspects started to run away, into the nearby bushes, with the police in close pursuit. The suspects then opened fire on the police, who retaliated. Subsequently, one of the suspects was shot dead. The other suspect managed to evade arrest and fled the scene on foot. A manhunt ensued for the remaining other suspect,” said Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig

Motlafela Mojapelo.

The drama played out like a scene from a Hollywood action movie, with gunfire being exchanged between the armed suspects and the police. A witness, who could not be named, said they heard gunfire coming from the bushes next to a local car wash. Within a short space of time, a big crowd had gathered at the scene. “There were many police there and a man was lying face-down in a pool of blood on the ground. We suspected him to be one of the gang members that was being hunted by the police.” The source said the scene was very scary.

Mojapelo warned criminals to stop terrorising communities as, by doing so, they will meet the full might of the law. He also called on communities to work hand in hand with the police in fighting crime.

The spokesperson for the National Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Lizzy Suping, said that the death of a suspect was being investigated.

“Our investigators are still in the vicinity,” she said. She did not want to divulge any further information, saying that the information first needed to be verified.

Zikalala on mission to fix shoddy border fence

During his first month in his new capacity as Minister of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), Mr Sihle Zikalala has already made a priority of addressing the Beitbridge Border Post saga involving the installation of the border fence between South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2020. When the fence was found to be of poor quality, this caused a lot of criticism from decision makers and the general public.

On Tuesday, 4 April, Zikalala, accompanied by Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela, conducted a site inspection to assess the border fence, which he admitted was one of the government’s failed projects. “We are going to attend to [our] failures, but we are not going

to accept wrongdoing. Where there is failure, we try to improve it, but where there is wrongdoing, people must be held accountable. The report that showed that the fence was not up to standard was correct. The Department of Public Works must implement the assessment report conducted by the government’s risk committee and Special Investigating Unit (SIU),” he said.

The DPWI is already working on the recommendations of the report.

Two contractors, namely Caledon River Properties (Pty) Ltd and Profteam CC, were awarded R40,4 million by the DPWI to erect the Beitbridge border fence, but when the erected fence started to collapse, the SIU was prompted to investigate the awarding of the contract.

Minister Zikalala believes that consequence management is the only

way to build a culture of responsibility and integrity. He told the media that his department had already disciplined some of its staff members internally, but would now also deal with three other senior managers within the department.

Asked when the new fence would be installed, Zikalala said that had to be determined by the Border Management Authority (Department of Home Affairs and South African National Defence Force).

“These are the departments that have to tell the DPWI what type of fence will be most suitable. Once they have done so, we can implement their recommendations,” he said.

Zikalala promised to be back again in two months to deal with the issue of the fence.

083 453 0847 of Rulet by tel. 082 851 4332. ‘n Skakel

Eight die in yet another N1 crash

The N1 between Musina and Louis Trichardt produced yet another fatal accident last Saturday morning (1 April), when a bakkie and a minibus taxi collided head-on near the Baobab tollgate. Eight people were reportedly killed.

The road was temporarily closed for many hours while emergency services attended the scene. The spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Ms Tidimado Chuene, confirmed the incident. “The accident is suspected to have happened when a minibus taxi overtook unsafely on a barrier line, colliding head-on with a light delivery vehicle. Five men and three women lost their lives. Eight other people who sustained injuries were transported to nearby hospitals,” she said.

In another accident on 17 March this year, three people lost their lives when a truck crashed into a minibus taxi near the Ingwe Ho-

tel. The taxi was heading to Beitbridge when the accident occurred.

The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, also sent her condolences to the families of the deceased. “We are nearing the Easter long weekend, which will see a heightened volume of traffic on our roads as people will be travelling to different parts of the province to spend time with their families. While we anticipate this to be a period of joy and family reunions, experience has taught us that there are some among us who are reckless on the roads. Reckless driving, overtaking at unsafe spots, over-speeding, overloading, and drunk driving, count as the number one causes of road accidents and fatalities. The responsibility for road safety lies with all of us as individual drivers. We are therefore continuing to make a clarion call on motorists to become a part of the road safety crusade and be responsible road users at all times for all to arrive alive,” said Radzilani.

No mercy for traffic offenders this Easter

Road Safety

The manager responsible for traffic and road safety in Musina, Mr Daniel Hlungwane, said his team would have no mercy on traffic offenders this Easter holiday. Hlungwane was speaking during the launch of the Easter Holiday Safety Campaign, which took place along the N1 road in Musina last Wednesday (29 March). The annual campaign aims to minimise road accidents in the Musina municipal area.

During the launch, passing vehicles were stopped and checked for roadworthiness, and those found with defects were issued with fines. Driver’s permits and licenses were also checked.

Hlungwane said that Musina, as a border town, experienced high volumes of traffic, especially during holidays. “We do our work every day, but we need to intensify our efforts at this time of the year, as many people travel our roads to their various destinations. Our duty is to make sure that everyone is safe during this busy time of the year. Many road accidents that

lead to the loss of lives or serious injuries are avoidable, but some drivers choose to ignore the rules of the road,” he said.

He urged drivers to take a rest at least once every 200km.

“Fatigue is one of the major causes of carnage. We can avoid many accidents if our long-distance drivers give themselves time to rest. Another contributing factor is speeding and overloading vehicles, either with passengers or goods. It is very difficult to control an overloaded vehicle. That is why many road users lose control of their vehicles, which lead to major accidents.”

Hlungwane said that, just as drivers had a responsibility to obey the rules of the road, pedestrians too had a role to play. “We urge our drivers to refrain from using intoxicants, drugs or alcohol when driving because this has a negative effect on their concentration and driving ability. Pedestrians must at all times use pedestrian crossings when crossing the road and wear visible clothing at night. They too must avoid walking along the road under the influence of alcohol.”

Hierdie week, 25 jaar

Esterhuizen ingesweer as nuwe VF Plus raadslid

Dale Halgreen as vorige VF Plus raadslid.

Lim ready for Easter weekend traffic

Road Safety

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is sufficiently braced for high traffic volumes expected in the province over the next few days, said the department in a press release on Tuesday.

“The Transport Regulation team has already started to heighten visibility to curb infringements and encourage good driver behaviour with pre-Easter traffic law-enforcement roadblocks and speed operations on critical roads across the province,” the statement reads.

The department said that law-enforcement officers would be working around the clock between 6 and 10 April to maximise visibility and aid the flow of traffic, especially on critical routes prone to congestion. These include the N1, especially around tollgates, R101, R510, R516, N11, R37, R555, R521, R524, R523, R36, R40, R71, R81, P277/1, Matlala road, some local routes, and the two border posts in the province, Beitbridge and Groblersbrug.

In the press release, the Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, calls on all road users to ensure everyone’s safety over the long weekend. She also urges law-enforcement officials to continue to conduct their work with diligence and ensure that road users follow the rules, and that those who engage in criminal activities are brought to book.

“As we approach the Easter long weekend, it is our wish as the provincial government that we should all arrive alive. However, road safety starts with all of us. As we embark on our journeys, let us make sure that our cars are roadworthy, we keep a safe following distance, we do not

overtake at unsafe places, we do not drink and drive, and we rest enough on long journeys. Pedestrians must wear visible colours at night and keep away from the road. Let’s all arrive alive,” said Radzilani.

“Please invite all your family and friends to enjoy the day with us. Remember, to win the competition, you need to have the most votes!” invites the shell hole.

A full cash bar will be available on site, with rustic camping facilities available. If you want to overnight, just bring your bivvy or tent. The Bivvy Evening Floating Trophy is to be awarded to the shell hole with the most members at the parade. A lucky draw with prizes is also on offer.

Breakfast will be available the next morning for persons overnighting at the shell hole.

Eerste “skattejag” laat lesers lekker kopkrap

Kompetisie

On the Vhembe track with Dave ...

Tshatshingo Potholes

Lake Fundudzi

The Holy Forest Tate Vondo Dam

Dave shares his most recent expedition this week – an adventure-packed road trip with his friends through Venda Land, along enigmatic lakes, a sacred forest, and a beautiful sinkhole with a dark history.

Summertime is adventure time, and over the long weekend in March, I thought it a good idea to take a trip to Venda Land again. We had some friends from Pretoria and Ethiopia visiting for the weekend, so I decided to show them a few of the popular local sightings, such as the Holy Forest and Lake Fundudzi in the Thathe Vondo wilderness, the Tshatshingo Potholes along the Tshirovha River at Makwarani village, and some of the surrounding waterfalls, whilst driving along the scenic routes. We left Louis Trichardt in two

Cruisers early in the morning (with me in the lead) because it is about a 200km round trip. Taking the Witvlag Road, we drove to the Thathe Vondo area, where the off-road section starts. The view over the Thathe Vondo Dam and the Tshivhase tea plantation, which you pass on this road, for me, really is one of the most beautiful sights, especially after all the rain we have had recently. The main roads were not too bad, so we were making good time and were on our way to the Holy Forest. Soon, however, Mother Nature decided to throw us a curve-

Local adventurer Dave van Graan is well-known for his lengthy walkabouts through Namibia. He is also an experienced safari guide with a vast knowledge of the indigenous fauna and flora and has taken his local and international clients on countless 4x4 expeditions across Africa over the years.

ball. We were halfway through the Holy Forest when we came upon a massive fallen tree lying right across the road and blocking our way. After much deliberation, we decided that the tree had won and we were forced to turn back and change our route. I use TRACKS FOR AFRICA as tracking software on my GPS device, which helped a lot in finding a new route through the labyrinth of tracks.

The deeper we went into the forest, the worse the roads became, but we were able to reach the Tshirovha Falls for a quick visit. From there, we proceeded to the Mukumbani Waterfall, where one finds a clean picnic area with a stunning setting to enjoy a picnic lunch. People can even take a refreshing swim in the cool waters below the waterfall. Hundreds of small fish almost “attack” one’s feet to nibble at the dead skin. This reminded me of the fish spas I visited in Turkey years ago.

Once everyone had had something to eat, we set out for the Potholes. The road ahead, however, was in a serious state of deteriorationdeeply eroded by the rains - and we were clearly the first vehicles in a very long time to brave the drive up into the mountain. The going was really tough, especially with the roads still being wet, and the poor Cruisers were roaring and spinning

and sliding dangerously. At times, we were forced to fill the deep slots in the road with rocks, practically building a surface to drive on. The view was spectacular enough that none of the passengers wanted to be inside the vehicles at that point, especially when the Cruisers leaned precariously to the sides. Our guests opted rather to take videos and photographs than join the fun in the cars.

Slowly we made progress, and at last we were back on better roads again. We finally arrived at the Potholes, to everyone’s relief. The entry fee here is R20 per person and includes a guide that shares interesting information about the Venda

culture and the fascinating stories around the Potholes themselves. Legend has it that, in olden times, local witches were drowned in the potholes, which must have been a terrifying sight, but today they are appreciated for their natural beauty and are definitely a must-see if one is in the area. A lovely lodge that goes by the same name is situated there. Although I have never stayed there myself, it looks neat and modern, with lovely surrounding gardens.

The day’s travelling was long and on rough roads, but the scenery made up tenfold and we made our way back home with another exhilarating experience to share.

Book visit to KNP in advance

South African National Parks (SANParks) has begun welcoming visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) for the Easter school holidays. According to SANParks, they are expecting an increased number of visitors to the KNP during these school holidays as families pursue a tranquil time in nature to refresh. Plans for increased visibility of both traffic officials and visitor-management personnel to monitor speeding, after-hours travelling and general behaviour on the roads are being implemented,

to minimise incidents that lead to complaints. Management also urged visitors to cooperate with officials who will be on duty and to report unbecoming behaviour to the gate officials or call the emergency call centre number provided on the entry permits. Gate quotas will again be implemented for day visitors during the Easter long weekend, and all are advised to book online ahead of their visit.

The times slots below will apply:

Time slot 1: 06:00 to 08:00

Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00

Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards

Some gravel roads are still closed in the south of the park from recent flooding. Repairs are underway on the main road between Skukuza and Lower Sabie, which was extensively damaged and remains closed. Visitors are urged not to remove signs indicating that a road is closed as that will pose a danger to other motorists. Visitors should consult at the reception and gates for an update on road closures or visit the SM platforms.

Yahya to coach Eswatini women’s cricket side

A former resident of the town and former member of the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club, Yahya Jiwa, has been appointed as head coach of the Eswatini Women’s Team as well as the country’s U/19 men’s team.

During his playing days in Louis Trichardt in the 1990s and early 2000s, Yahya was probably the batter that bowlers in the local leagues feared the most. He could rip apart any bowling attack, and he was also a very able spinner.

For the past couple of years, Yahya stayed in Tanzania, where he was coach-

ing the country’s U/19 side and the women’s side. He is especially proud of the progress made with women’s cricket in this African country. Under his guidance, the side moved from a ranking of 66th in the world to the 31st spot. The team narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the World Cup, to be staged later this year.

But this year, Yahya has a completely new challenge. His appointment as head coach for the Eswatini teams means that he will have to relocate to Manzini and start preparing the sides for the World Cup qualifying matches.

For the U/19 team, this is around the corner, in July, but he has a bit more

time with the women’s side. They will take part in the qualifying matches in September this year. The qualifying matches will be played in South Africa and Eswatini will compete against other African countries.

Yahya is very realistic that a lot of hard work lies ahead, because Eswatini’s women’s side are ranked 82nd in the world. They will come up against teams such as Uganda and, of course, Tanzania.

If all goes according to plan, he will leave just after the Easter period to meet the team members and start with the training sessions.
