We will hunt down the “masterminds”

MEC promises more arrests following mayor Maluleke’s murder By Elmon Tshikhudo “We are going to arrest with no fear or no favour. We do not care who you are and what position you hold,” Ms Polly Boshielo, the Limpopo MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, said outside the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday. She was addressing the crowd that had gathered outside the court where two suspects appeared in connection with the murder of Collins Chabane Mayor Moses Maluleke. Maluleke, better known as Big Moss, was attacked by three men who demanded cash from him on his arrival at his home at Shikundu. The incident happened on Thursday, 21 July. During the incident, the killers shot and killed him and seriously injured his 18-year-old son, who is still recuperating in hospital. The police, who worked day and

night in tracking the suspects, took only a week to make a breakthrough in the case. Initially, three men were arrested, but one was later released because of a lack of evidence linking him to the case. Two accused, Shumani Nemadodzi (47) and Avhatakali Mulaudzi (42), made their first appearance in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The case was adjourned to 10 August for a bail application and further investigations. The accused will remain in custody. Before and during their appearance, a large group of community members gathered outside the court with placards denouncing the granting of bail to the accused. After the men had appeared before the magistrate, the group wanted to have a glimpse of the suspects, but the police whisked them away.

Despite persistent calls by leaders not to speculate about the motive for the killing, speculation has been rife that the killers were sent to murder Maluleke on the pretext of a robbery. Many believe the murder was politically motivated. These speculations were compounded by Boshielo, who vowed to arrest all the remaining role players in the case by the end of this week. She emphasised that they would also be going after the “masterminds” behind the killings. “We have brought in a very sophisticated team of investigators from Pretoria. We are very serious about this, and please give [the] police space,” she said. Her vow to arrest the masterminds has left residents with no doubt that she might be referring to some big fish who are suspected to have been the ones who sent the killers. Limpopo Premier Chupu Mathabatha, however, cautioned people not to speculate and to rath-

er leave the matter up to the police to investigate the murder properly. The two suspects arrested in connection with the murder are both from Duthuni village outside Thohoyandou. Those who grew up with them said they were not surprised to see Nemadodzi being accused of such a crime. “Since his childhood, he has been known for petty thieving that developed into serious crimes. We are not surprised. He has a number of other pending cases,” one member of the local community said. With Mulaudzi, however, the story is different altogether. Many of the residents from the area said he was known to be a very religious man. He is also well known as an artist who has crafted sculptures of prominent personalities in Limpopo. “We are still in shock as a community,” said a source who wished to remain anonymous.

Another killing at Madombidzha By Kaizer Nengovhela

Captured during the IEC Party Liaison Committee’s special meeting are, standing from left to right, Cllr Paul Herman (Freedom Front Plus), Cllr Maggie Van Staden (DA), Mpfariseni Kevin Mulaudzi (IEC), Eresia Nembidzane (IEC) and Cllr Corlett Nematshawe (ANC). Seated in front are Cllr Siyaphi Shirilele (ANC), Pastor Joseph Salani (Musina Council of Churches) and Dakalo Netshisaulu (IEC).

Democracy only works if people participate by voting, says IEC Local government

Musina’s political parties all agree on one thing, and that is that residents should be encouraged to register to vote during government elections. This statement was made during the special meeting of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Party Liaison Committee, held at the Musina Municipality on Friday, 22 July. Political parties that attended the meeting included the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Freedom Front Plus. The meeting came after statistics showed that only 22 093 residents out of the 45 309 on Musina’s voters roll had voted during last year’s

local government elections, representing 49.14% of the total voter turnout. During these elections, 1 499 were spoiled ballots, which only proves that a need exists to strengthen voter education in the area. The IEC Vhembe’s regional office supervisor, Mr Mpfariseni Kevin Mulaudzi, said the IEC was concerned that some community members still did not value the importance of electoral democracy. “Voting gives people the right to be heard … We are seriously concerned about young people because only a very few of them participate in electoral democracy. We want these young people to come on board, so that they can help to strengthen our democracy,” he said.

Mulaudzi said more people should be encouraged to register to vote. “It is to everyone’s benefit because government resources are allocated according to the number of voters in the area. If we can get more people on the voters’ roll, the number of wards and councillors will definitely increase,” he said. Mulaudzi said the aim was to increase Musina’s voters roll to 50 000 by the end of this year. “We cannot do this alone. As the IEC, we need government, political parties and community structures to help us to achieve this goal. This can only be done if we work together in promoting the importance of voter education in our community. Democracy only works if people participate.”

He was, however, charged with the murder of another suspect in this case. The magistrate, Ms Shirley Nemutandani, postponed Simon and Percy’s case, as well as Ndivhuwo’s case, to 30 September 2022, when dates will be set for their trials at the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou. Twala was satisfied with this outcome. “We are now convinced that the murder case is progressing well as the suspects will finally go on trial at the High Court. We also want those who hired the hitmen to be arrested and face the might of the law,” he said. The body of a 30-year-old man was found in a street at Madombidzha on Sunday, 31 July. Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the police had rushed to the scene after they had been notified by passers-by. On arrival, they found the deceased lying on the ground. He was positively identified by community members as Mpho Ranwedzi. According to Mojapelo, Ranwedzi had stab wounds to his head and body, which could have resulted in his death. “A post-mortem will be conducted to shed more light on the case. We have opened a murder docket, following the incident. At this point, the motive for the murder is still unknown and no arrests have been made yet,” he said. Cllr Cedrick Malange expressed the community’s shock over the incident. “Ri pfa vhutungu nga maanda (meaning ‘our pain is not small’),” he said. “We mourn with the Ranwedzi family and ask God to give them strength in this trying time.”

Malange said that they could not even remember when last they had experienced a whole month without some kind of incident of crime in their area. “We are not safe here anymore. We must hide ourselves in our houses when it is dark, but even there we are not safe, as criminals even break the doors to commit their crimes. There have been so many robber-

ies and killings. The spate of violent crimes that sometimes result in the loss of human life is becoming a great concern in the Madombidzha area. This was the seventh person killed here since the beginning of the year,” he said. Ranwedzi will be buried at Madombidzha on Saturday, 6 August. The service starts at 06:00.

Tshiseluselu residents fed-up with cable theft and no water in village By Victor Mukwevho The residents of Tshiseluselu village are fed-up with thugs who steal electricity cables each time loadshedding occurs during the night in their area. One of the elders in the village, Vhakoma Vho-Khathutshelo Nenzhelele, said that more than 30 houses had been targeted since loadshedding started in earnest two months ago. “It is now getting out of hand. Thieves just wait for loadshedding to commence to pounce on these poor villagers. We are afraid that, sooner or later, we will all be in the dark in this area,” he said. He added that he did not understand why the government was failing to fix the problems affecting Eskom and kept on making empty promises. The village is about one kilome-

tre from the Damani Dam, where the raw-water pump station was recently destroyed, leaving the area without water. Nenzhelele said he feared what would happen to the villagers. “The dam is infested with crocodiles, and we have no

other alternative but to go and fetch water there. People have been killed while washing clothes there. I really fear for the worst. I am pleading with the government to help us with water tanks while fixing the problems at the dam,” he said.

We believe that an open-court trial will reveal the motive for this heinous act and whether there are other people involved in this murder.” While the police were praised lavishly, Mathabatha lashed out at the courts at the same time, saying that, despite the police’s hard work, the justice system was letting them down by imposing short sentences on criminals. After the formal programme at the stadium was concluded, a convoy of selected mourners moved to the local Shikundu Cemetery, where Maluleke was laid to rest.

The investigation has been scheduled to end 30 November 2022,” he said. When asked why the local community was not being kept informed about the developments, Sidimela said this was untrue and that key community members were “in the loop” as to what was happening. “As it stands, everyone in our community knows why the project is halted and that it will be completed when the investigations have been completed,” he said Sidimela’s admission that he had already known in

2019 about the investigation is surprising. When he was contacted in January 2021 by Limpopo Mirror, he pretended to know little about alleged fraud involving the Lottery grant. “Which irregularities?” he asked, adding that the reporter should “explain that fraud you are talking about to me in writing”.

NLC as transparent as a toilet window The NLC’s spokesperson, Ndivhuho Mafela, also refused to provide any clarity about what will happen with this project. “The NLC is cooperating with the SIU investigation and therefore refrain[s] from making public statements that require details of grants awarded between 2014 and 2020 as they are subject to the said probe,” he said.

The NLC, however, is battling with credibility issues. The SIU investigation revealed that the NLC knew about the fraud involved in the Maila village project but, instead of acting, tried to negotiate their way out of it. The real losers are the residents of Maila village. When the project was started, an estimated 450 residents older than 64 years were living in Maila village. These pensioners were neither consulted, nor did they ask for an old-age home to be built. Had the money been divided among them, each could have received just over R60 000. That would have been enough for them to extend their houses, sink a borehole, build toilets or improve their lives in general. What the community has now is a deserted, half-built structure that serves as a monument to corruption in the country.

Granny Alidzuli celebrates her 100 By Kaizer Nengovhela The rural village of HaMashau nearly came to a standstill last Saturday (30 July), when family and friends arranged a surprise party to celebrate Granny Alidzulwi Musiamo’s 100th birthday. Musiamo, surrounded by her loved ones, sat like a princess at the beautifully decorated table as speakers took turns to share how she had contributed to their lives. One of her children, Ms Mpho Musiamo, said they wanted to give their mother a

party to show her that all her children and grandchildren loved and appreciated her very much. “This is our way of showing appreciation to a senior citizen. I believe that, as from today, my mother will really believe that we love her too. Our mother is a woman who likes reading the Bible all the time and she loves her family very much. She never misses going to church on a Sunday.” Mpho said that young people must look and learn from events like these that older people should be respected and loved, not abused. “Our

elders are blessings, and we must take care of and honour them.” Granny Musiamo thanked her children and grandchildren for making her 100th birthday so special. She told Limpopo Mirror that she had never gone to school. “During our days, there was no schooling. Our parents did not go to school either, but things are different now. It is important for the children to get educated.” Asked about the secret to her long life she replied: “Eat healthy and listen to the advice of the elders.”

Court finds that Madovhi was arrested for no reason at all

“All along I told them I did nothing wrong, but they didn’t listen” By Elmon Tshikhudo The famous Tshivenda movie star, Mr Azwidohwi Tshirangwana, was vindicated at last after a three-year battle in the Thohoyandou Civil Court. In 2019, the 49-year-old star from Maniini outside Thohoyandou, popularly known as Madovhi in Tshivenda movie circles, was wrongfully arrested by the Thohoyandou police for robbery and theft. He vehemently denied the charges but was taken away and kept at the police station for hours. The next morning, he was quietly released from custody – no court appearance and no apology whatsoever. Immediately after this embarrassing incident, the actor vowed that he would fight tooth and nail to see the police pay for locking him up in a cell like a criminal. So, two months later, he hired the services of local attorney Mr Fulufhedzani Mudzunga of Mphaphuli Mudzunga Tshinetise Attorneys Inc in Thohoyandou. (Limpopo Mirror also

covered his plight at the time). “The processes have been going on since 2019, but everything was delayed as result of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our client was unlawfully arrested and detained for a crime in which he was in actual fact a witness. He was arrested at his home in the early hours on charges of ‘pickpocketing’, while he was asleep with his family, and it was a very long and strenuous ordeal for him. The state has finally conceded today (Thursday, 28 July) that indeed, the arrest was unlawful. All that is left now is the issue of compensation, which will be dealt with at a later stage,” said Mudzunga. “Our client is one of the vulnerable members of our society and it’s an irony that he too had to suffer such violations of his rights and dignity at the hands of those in uniform. People have been looking at him with suspicion after his arrest as he is a well-known public figure in and around Thohoyandou. His wish is for the public to know that

his arrest was unlawful and that he is a law-abiding citizen. As a law firm, we will continue to fight for his rights to ensure that at least he is fairly compensated for the treatment he received, although we know that no amount of money can make up for the damage he had suffered. His victory is our victory,” he said. An ecstatic Tshirangwana thanked his attorney for making this journey with him, until his innocence was proven. “I am very excited that I have been vindicated by the courts. I have all along been telling them that I did nothing wrong, but they did not listen. They did not even know what they were arresting me for. There was no need for them to lock me up. They should have only let me go to the police station the following morning to explain the misunderstanding, but they chose to take me to the station and lock me up in a cold cell for the night. I suffered a lot, and they have to pay for my suffering,” he said.

We’re “swimming” in the sewage, complain family from Vleifontein For the past month, a family from Vleifontein has been living with the overpowering stench caused by a persistent sewage spillage in the township, which flows directly into their yard and into their home. The owner of the house, Ms Ellen Matshavha, said that the issue with the dysfunctional sewer system, which runs

around their yard, has become a pain to them. “This latest problem started a month ago. We have engaged the municipality a number of times. Every time they come and fix it, then leave, but the following day it will be the same thing all over again.” Matshavha said that the situation had become so bad that they had to wear water boots when they entered their home. The damage that it had

caused to her property, she said, was immense. “We live in a sea of raw sewage; everything is covered by it. We don’t sleep well at night because the smell is unbearable. This is placing our health at risk. We cannot walk three steps outside without stepping into a stinking pool of faeces. This because of the municipality’s laxity.” Matshavha said that she had obtained a court order against the municipality, who were given 48 hours to fix the sewage. EFF councillor in the Makhado Municipality Mr Wiseman Ramalwa agreed that the spilling sewage posed a very serious problem. “I saw it with my own eyes. Those people literally live with faecal matter inside their houses. This sewer system had been erected in 1978. Many other houses around Vleifontein have also been affected by the blocked sewer. We as the EFF are totally against the delay in fixing it,” he said. Limpopo Mirror sent a media enquiry to the Vhembe District Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, for comment, but at the time of our going to press he was still waiting for a response from the relevant department.

There’s no such thing as a dirty job, says Manyaga Entertainment Washing other people’s dirty sneakers with one’s bare hands, a bar of soap and a bucket of water is not exactly a job many would consider something to be proud of, but in these tough economic times one does what one must to keep the pot cooking. This is what Rilinde Manyaga (25) of Mbilwi, near Sibasa does for a living, and he does not care what people think of him. At least, he says, he earns an honest living. To Manyaga, a “dirty job” does not exist, as long as one does

something that generates “clean” money. “Some people, especially the youth, are very ashamed to do this type of work because they believe that people will look down on them. There is nothing more fulfilling than leading an honest life and earning honest money. It is our responsibility as young people to get up and come up with plans to sustain ourselves, instead of waiting for government’s handouts,” he said. The young man, who is currently upgrading his Grade 12, first saw his opportunity in June last year when he visited some of his friends and noticed their

dirty sneakers lying around their homes because they were too lazy to wash them. “I asked three of my friends to give me their sneakers, and washed them for free. Some of those sneakers were so dirty that it seemed impossible to get them clean again, but I scrubbed away and, by the time I returned them to my friends, they looked as good as new. I then started circulating on social media that I can clean sneakers, and that is how it all began. People started calling me.” Manyanga has managed to acquire a driver’s license and obtain a security training certificate with

the money he makes. He now has clients from around Thohoyandou, Ngovhela, Phiphidi, Maniini, Maungani and the surrounding areas. He charges R40 per pair of sneakers, which enables him to take public transport to collect and deliver to his clients. “When I need something, I don’t have to beg from someone, because I always have cash to sustain myself. We are the masters of our own destiny, and we must wake up and create jobs for ourselves. It is my wish that unemRilinde Manyaga makes an honest living ployed young people everywhere by washing other people's dirty sneakstart to change their perspective ers. reality that so much evil is taking place in South Africa, particularly in the Vhembe District where we are located. It has been a year of gender-based violence, killings, ritual killings, femicide, bullying in schools, robberies, break-ins, rape, child trafficking, corruption and minimal service delivery by our municipalities,” he said. Pastor Prince Ramahala added that numerous problems were affecting communities, such as the lack of water, load-shedding and load-reduction, potholed roads, and many others. “There are mass killings taking place at taverns at the moment, which may even draw toward the churches. As pastors, we cannot just look on as if nothing is wrong. We need God’s intervention as of now, and that is the reason behind the prayer meeting,” he said. Executive Mayor Nenguda, who was still on crutches after a serious car accident recently, said the prayer session was just what the doctor ordered. “I am still under doctor’s care, as you can see, but today I am feeling much better. It is like I received the best counselling. As government officials, we also need prayers for our safety and service delivery to our people,” he said before outlining their achievements, shortfalls and plans as government.

Art & Entertainment Pastor Steven releases a book of encouragement By Kaizer Nengovhela Pastor Steven Mathelemusa has just released his first motivational book, called You are born for a purpose. Mathelemusa leads the Bible Mission Church’s Ramavhoya branch in the Nzhelele area and is also a businessman. He says that people might find the book worth the read as it carries anecdotes from his own personal life experiences. “It was not easy for me to write a book like this one. It’s not exactly the kind of book anyone expects from a pastor,” he said. “I wrote this book to impact the lives of people from all age groups in terms of figuring out the importance of decision making, and also the issue of self-encouragement when they are in the midst of challenges.” He says that facing challenges is normal and that everybody goes

through these at some point in life. “What matters is how you react to what you are going through. I noticed that many people fail to make good decisions because of a lack of knowledge, and they fail to account for their choices. This book will act as a basis for them to know that the decisions we make today will determine what tomorrow holds for us.” He says that the decisions people make are inter-related. “They depend on each other, for example, ‘I’m indirectly deciding to suffer’. Self-encouragement is also included in decision making because when you encourage yourself, you will decide to do something, and with a positive attitude. I succeed in both running a business and writing because I am a hard worker. I make sure that whenever I’m not busy at my business, I think of what I can write about,” he said. “I will find time to write, even when I have a lot of other work to do, because

there is this burning desire for writing inside me.” He told Limpopo Mirror that he nearly gave up at one point while he was writing the book. Were it not for the encouragement of a few people who had pushed him to carry on, he said, he might have never finished it.

Phalaphala FM visits fruit market to honour independent women Phalaphala FM will be broadcasting live from Tshakhuma Fruit Market on Friday, 26 August, in commemoration of National Women’s Month. This will be done under the new initiative by the station, themed Ridi hudza ngavho, and will be to honour women who beat all the odds to empower themselves and provide for their families through working at the fruit market. The initiative forms part of the Nne na Vhone show. Rofhiwa Nethengwe will broadcast from Tshakhuma Fruit Market from 09:00 to 12:00 and will be talking with the women who sell their fruit produce at the market. National Women’s Day is an annual South African public holiday. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country’s pass laws, which required South Africans defined as “black” under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal passport, known as a passbook, that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour during the Apartheid era. The first National Women’s Day was celebrated on 9 August 1995. “The ridi hudza ngavho initiative is aimed at showing appreciation for the women who work at the Tshakhuma Fruit Market and to inspire other women to do the same in empowering themselves,” said Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele. She discouraged the tendency by some women to encourage their daughters to bear as many children as possible, so that they can become beneficiaries of the child support grant. Ravele said that women had a responsibility to shape the future of their children. She appealed to women not to spend all their time watching TV but to dedicate their time to self-development activities instead. Ravele said that the reason why women had become more vulnerable to sexual abuse was because they were not financially independent. “If you are financially independent, it is unlikely that you will fall into the temptation of accepting a job offer in exchange for sex.” She said that transformation had created opportunities for women and allowed them to be major role players in the economy.

From the jaws of death to a gospel star By Victor Mukwevho Today he is an international gospel artist, an ANC councillor, radio presenter, pastor and an albinism activist, but for Mbilu Rapson Rambuwani, life has not always been this comfortable. When he was born, he had to be

rescued by his mother as some family members wanted him to be killed because he was born with albinism. His late mother had to hide him very far from the killers to save his life. Family elders had allegedly regarded him as a curse from the gods and were also concerned that

the family would be humiliated for giving birth to an albino child. “I was very angry when my mother told me how she had to hide me from my own uncles. But today, I am the one who is helping them the most. As a pastor and a servant of God, I have forgiven them,” he said. As if that was not enough, Rambuwani had a tough time when he grew up because many children did not want to play or touch him in his neighbourhood and at school. “I used to play alone at home and sit alone at school. Because of a lack of knowledge, other kids were afraid that if they came next to me, I would transfer albinism to them. They did not even want to eat sitting next to me. I was a loner, and my heart was always very painful. But I knew deep down in my heart that God had something special that He created me for,” he said. After he passed Grade 12, Rambuwani was employed by the Mavhoi Technical College as a

clerk. He worked there for several years, but the stigma of being an albino was always there. After launching his musical career, he resigned to become a full-time musician. From 1991, Rambuwani started making headlines in the Mirror newspaper and on local radio stations for releasing hit after hit. He was also the first local artist to record gospel songs in Shona. One of his songs, Nyarara Maria, became like a national anthem to Zimbabweans who are living in South Africa and in other countries around the globe. The past Sunday, Rambuwani was at his best on Univen FM. Rambuwani joined Univen FM in 2006 and has not looked back. He is a councillor in the Vhembe District Municipality tasked with the special programme on women, the youth and people living with disabilities. He concluded by saying he was working on his latest album, which will be released soon.

Prayer session for a safer R578 road By Kaizer Nengovhela Pastors from various denominations, representatives from the Waterval SAPS and traffic officers from the Makhado Municipality have been converging on the R578 road next to Mbokota regularly over the past few years to pray that the high number of road accidents on this deadly road may subside.

Jonathan Thifhulufhelwi Secondary’s top-performing learners from Grade 8 to 12 received a pat on the back for their efforts during the mid-year examinations. An awards function was held at the school on 22 July, where Takgalang Consulting presented the learners with trophies, certificates and complimentary bags. In the photo, from left to right, are Mbhulaheni Malotsha, Khodani Malotsha (top Grade 12 learner) and school principal Mr Eric Tshivhinda. Photo supplied.

On Sunday, 31 July, along with church members, law enforcement officers and community members, they converged again at a certain spot along this road where many fatal accidents have previously occurred for a healing and cleansing ceremony, and to

thank the Lord for answering their prayers. One of the organisers of the event, Pastor Lucky Maluleke, said going back to the spot and thanking the Lord for sparing so many lives during the festive seasons was important. “The Bible tells us that our Lord is a good listener and needs people who are dedicated in prayer. We have no doubt that our prayers are being heard because we serve a living God. This is a testimony that our God cares for those who ask and pray unceasingly. We will continue to ask Him to protect everyone on our roads because He is the source of life.” Maluleke said seeking divine intervention to stop accidents from happening on the roads

was important. “There are things that we as human beings cannot accomplish without the Lord’s intervention. We need assistance from God to achieve our set road safety goals.” He thanked everyone who took part in this thanksgiving session. On behalf of the community, the well-known PSL soccer referee, Mr Jelly Chabane, expressed his appreciation to the pastors and congregants from the respective churches, traffic officers, community members and the Waterval police. Quoting the Bible, he said they must put everything before God, “and He will answer our prayers”. Chabane urged every road user to be more cautious when using the roads.

News with an independent soul

By Elmon Tshikhudo For two local women, the road to realising their dreams had been a long and winding one, but in the end, theirs was a case of “better late than never” as they travelled towards a brighter future. Back in 2006, at the age of 18, Ms Funanani Nemakonde (now 36) enrolled for a BCom degree in accounting, while her friend, Ms Tsireledzo Thagwana, then 17 (now 35), enrolled for a degree in management and accounting at the University of Venda. Nemakonde dropped out in 2011 and got re-admitted in 2017, but was not allowed to do her previous degree, for which she had only four modules left to complete. So, she had to start from scratch, choosing a four-year teaching degree this time, which she was supposed to have completed before, but because she had failed a module, another year of studies was added. Thagwana went the same route. Just before she completed the last module for her degree, she dropped out. When she applied for re-admission, she was told that she had to choose another degree, so she also opted to do her Bachelor of Education, which she started

the same year (2017) as her friend Nemakonde. At long last, the two friends both graduated on Friday, 15 July, thus fulfilling their long-cherished dream of becoming graduates. Asked why they had chosen to go back to varsity after such a long break, both replied with nearly the same answer. “Life without education is hard, and finding a job that doesn’t require a degree limits you.” Even a job that requires a matric certificate is hard to come by, they added. “So, we spent five years trying, with no luck, until we decided that it’s never too late and that we can still make it and achieve something in life. And here we are today; well equipped with qualifications that put us in a good position in the job market,” said Nemakonde, who is now an educator’s assistant at Khwevha in Phase 3. Thagwana is doing her IT apprenticeship at the Northern Technical College, also earning her own salary. “Going back to varsity was worth it. Now we can see that, with a valid qualification, it’s easier to get a job than when you have no education at all. To those who have given up, stand up and pick up the pieces. Better late than never,” she said.

Better late than never. This is the motto that encouraged Ms Funanani Nemakonde (right) and Ms Tsireledzo Thagwana to go back to varsity to further their studies. Both graduated with their respective degrees from Univen on 15 July. Photo: Elmon Tshikhudo. Several learners between Grade R and Grade 7 from the Tshiawelo Primary School based in Tshitungulwane village in the Vuwani area received trophies and certificates on Friday, 22 July, in recognition of their achievements during the second academic school term. In the photograph, the school principal, Ms Julia Mashaba (left ), poses with the top Grade 7 learner, Mulanga Mashamba (next to Mashaba) and some of the other learners who excelled during the term. Asked if they were going to beef up the current squad before the activities for the new season started, Mashau said that their plan was to acquire the services of five experienced players as a matter of urgency. He said that the aim was to sign a centre back, goalkeeper, two strikers and a left back before the new season started in about two months’ time. With regards to the team’s technical department, Mashau said that Mr Tsumbedzo “Zoo” Manamela would oversee the team. Manamela was the caretaker coach for the team during their promotional playoff campaign. Mashau said that Manamela would work with Arnold Nthangeni as a co-coach. The team had released one key player, Wanga Khorommbi, to Venda Football Academy (VFA). United Artists will use the Makhuvha and Saselamani Stadiums as the team’s home grounds.

Tshisevhe’s brace sinks Makhuvha By Victor Mukwevho Gogo Flora Tshisevhe scored a goal in each half to help her team, Ngwenani Gogos FC, beat Makhuvha Gogos FC 2-0 in a Gogos League game played at Vhurivhuri last Wednesday (27th). The matches in which the senior ladies compete, last only 15 minutes in each half. After the final whistle has blown, one might be convinced that the women had played for more than an hour per side as they look so exhausted. As expected, the game progressed at a snail’s pace, with

some gogos who are more than 80 years of age only able to walk, instead of running with the ball. From the first minute one could see that the legs of some of the gogos were gone, and most, if not all of them, were terribly out of shape. Even the standard of the game left much to be desired. Trapping the ball seemed to be problematic for some ladies and at times the kicking was, for a lack of a better word, surprising. The ball could fly off in any direction, depending to a great extent on what direction the gogo was facing. Gogo Flora Tshisevhe opened the scoring in the eighth min-

ute when a loose ball came her way and she collided with it, and it rolled into the net, making the score 1-0 at the break. The pattern of play did not change much in the second half. Tshisevhe scored her brace after a scramble in the goalmouth. This time the ball hit her opponent and bounced back in her direction. She surprised everyone, especially the keeper, by unleashing a scorcher that found the back of the net. The game ended in a 2-0 win for Ngwenani Gogos FC - the first defeat for the current log leaders, Makhuvha Gogos FC, this season.

Rodadau and Merwe United in Sasol Women’s League clash By Frank Mavhungu With most of the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Sasol Women’s League left with three matches to play before the end of the season, the struggle for promotion and to escape the relegation axe will continue this weekend. Rodadau FC will have nobody but themselves to blame if they fail to collect the maximum points against Merwe United Ladies. They will test each other’s strength at the Muziafera Grounds outside Vuwani on Saturday. Merwe United are still to win a league match this season. They are fighting for survival at the bottom of the log with two points accumulated from 11 matches. Rodadau still stand an outside

chance to win the league title. They are lying in the fourth position on the log standings with 17 points, 13 behind the pace setters, Lacoste Morning Stars. Lacoste Morning Stars will travel to Nwamitwa village outside Tzaneen. Their match against Sisters FC will be played at the Nwamitwa Stadium. Should they manage to collect the full points at stake, Morning Stars will be almost sure of a place in the promotional playoffs. The University of Limpopo Ladies will host Real Mighty Girls at the Turfloop Stadium in Polokwane. Tshandama Young Stars must beat Sealene Ladies to enhance their chances to escape the relegation axe. They will lock horns at the Tshandama Grounds in the Mutale area in the only

match that will be played on Sunday afternoon. The other fixtures are: Kanatla Ladies vs Marumo Gallants, Copper Belts vs FC 50 United Stars, Capricorn Stars Sport Development vs Schoonord Ladies and Seven Stars Ladies vs Mandebele Happy Fighters Ladies.

Can Maelula beat the Tigers again? By Frank Mavhungu

other hand, Young Tigers will pin their hopes on Pfarelo Ndau, Mualusi Mulaudzi and Mulisa Rambau for goals. The match expected to be the final before the actual final will be between Madridtas FC and Berea FC. Madridtas and Berea are still at each other’s throats, following an incident that took place at the Tshifudi Stadium three weeks ago. Madridtas scored a controversial goal to beat Berea FC 1-0 in their last-16-round match. Madridtas’ way to the quarter-final round went via Makhitha Oscar Stars, whom

they beat 5-2 at the same venue a fortnight ago, while Berea had beaten Igwe FC 6-5 to secure a place in the quarter-final round. United Artists are gearing up for a tough game against Mashamba Soccer Academy. United Artists beat Sambandou United Professional 3-0 in their opening round, while Mashamba Soccer Academy’s way to the quarter-final stage went via Mukula Fast XI, whom they had brutally walloped 6-1. Tshikhwani Stone Breakers will have a date with Basel FC.

The place to be on Sunday will be at Tshifudi Stadium, where the quarter-final matches for the Vhembe Super Cup Tournament will be played. The question that remains unanswered is whether Maelula United Brothers will again shame Masakona Young Tigers. United Brothers thwarted Young Tigers’ plans to play in the final of the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Winter Youth Tournament when they narrowly beat them 1-0 in their semi-final match at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Young Tigers must keep an eye on Brothers’ killer striker, Sello “Ferrari” Molewa, or else their Super Cup journey will end abruptly. Rockers clinch bronze in Zwavhudi By Kaizer Nengovhela Matanda Rockers were beaten 2-0 by Masakona Young Tigers in the loser’s finals of the Zwavhudi Animal Feeds Youth Winter tournament, which was played at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday. Young Tigers ended in position three after beating Rockers and went home with R10 000, bronze medals and a new soccer kit. Tigers deserved to win as the boys from Matanda showed no appetite for goals in the first half. Justice Madidibula, Tigers’ centre forward, was unlucky on several occasions in the first 20 minutes of the game. In the first instance, he received a neat pass from Masala Tshimbei at the edge of the box but hesitated for too long to unleash and ultimately lost possession. Thapelo Motau committed a similar mistake shortly there-

after. He unleashed aimlessly from the 20-metre area. The ball went far wide. Rockers threatened to score in the 18th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Vutomi Ngomane, forced his way through the defence of Tigers but lost possession on the brink of unleashing from inside the box. Tigers took the lead in the 28th minute. Lufuno Badau dribbled past three defenders in a row and scored easily to make the half-time score 1-0 in

favour of Tigers. The keeper of Tigers, Zwothe Nevari, made his presence felt in the 49th minute. Nevari did the unexpected by braving Adivhaho Mudau’s close-range volley and palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Tigers increased the margin in the 74th minute. Bennet Chinkuta beat the offside trap from the left corner and unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box. The ball hit the crossbar and landed inside the goal box.

United Brothers were presented with a cheque to the value of R40 000, two sets of soccer kit, gold medals, four soccer balls and a floating trophy during a ceremony held at the stadium shortly after the final whistle.
