A killer rapist?

The suspect who appeared in court last week in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Ms Fhatuwani Asnath

Nguluvhe (34) has been linked to more cases of rape.

Shortly after he had appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court, more people came to the fore, claiming that

he was the person who had kidnapped and raped them.

Mashudu Bele (35) from Mudzidzidzi village appeared in court on Friday afternoon on charges of murder and being in possession of stolen property. This followed the disappearance of Ms Nguluvhe from the Thavhani Mall on 6 March this year.

More allegations of rape against suspect in Nguluvhe murder case

Nguluvhe’s family opened a missing-person case at the Thohoyandou Police Station shortly after she had gone missing. She was renting a room at Maniini village, which is just a stone’s throw away from Thavhani Mall.

After her disappearance was reported, her brothers, Livhuwani and Robert Munyai from Mapakoni village in Niani, organised a search party with community members from their village, which is about 60 kilometres from Thohoyandou. They started searching the bushes around Maniini village and the surrounding areas, but to no avail.

The police were not idle

during the search. The provincial police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, said that, after lengthy investigations conducted by the Thohoyandou detectives and the Provincial Missing Persons Task Team, the suspect was arrested at Tshikweta village at about 21:00 on Wednesday night, 22 March. He was allegedly found in possession of bank cards belonging to the missing woman.

According to Mojapelo, Nguluvhe’s body was found along the R524 Punda Maria road, next to Maniini village, that same night, already in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Bele was allegedly operating as an illegal taxi driver (e-hailer) in and around Thohoyandou. The allegation includes that he advertised his fake taxi business on social-media

platforms, where people would phone him, requesting a ride to their destinations.

When he appeared in court on Friday afternoon, he appeared confused and looked at the magistrate without blinking an eye. When asked if he wished to get a legal aid lawyer from the state or his own lawyer, he said he would conduct his own defence. The case was postponed to 4 April for a formal bail application.

Immediately after Bele’s appearance in court, Mr Phathutshedzo Ramabulana, secretary of the Vhembe Concerned Group, was contacted by a young woman who claimed that the suspect was the same person who had kidnapped and raped her repeatedly on 5 March this year, only a day before Nguluvhe disappeared.

“What wrong have women done to deserve this?” is the most asked question around the Vhembe District. In a single week, the region saw seven women brutally murdered in separate incidents.

Maniini resident’s yard. The discovery was made by a very shocked house owner.

Khadzi Vho-Susan Mphaphuli, the owner of the house, said that they had heard a commotion at around 02:00 in the morning, but because of load shedding they considered the situation too dark and dangerous to go outside to investigate. “We heard footsteps and a cry for help on the road here. The footsteps entered our yard, but we thought the person was only passing through. It was frightening. We waited until early morning, and when we went outside we noticed bloodstains leading to the corner. The bloodied body of a woman was lying next to a big rock. We alerted the neighbours and civic, and the Mphaphuli was still shaken as she recalled the grizzly sight, saying she had never seen something like that. “This is painful, especially that we are losing more and more young women who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow. Things have changed. In our days, you never

found girls chilling out at beer halls at odd hours, but girls today go out on the weekends and end up getting killed or raped. Why are our women killed in this fashion? What wrong have they done to deserve this?” Mphaphuli said. The father of the deceased woman, Mr Thembuluwo Mathomu, and

other family members identified the body at the scene. “Our hearts are torn apart, and we do not have words to express our grief. Fulufhelo was my daughter, and I feel like a part of me has been taken away. We are busy preparing for her burial, and this will probably take place on Saturday,” he said.

the suspect (Bele) to where he is staying with his live-in lover at Tshikweta village to look for the stolen items. They left me with the victim at their offices,” Ramabulana said.

He added that, after a while, the detectives came back with some of the items that were stolen from the victim’s room, which they had recovered from Bele’s house. “They found the pair of Cavella shoes and the pair of Drip shoes. They (the police) told the victim that they will contact her after completing their investigations,” Ramabulana said.

In a late development, Bele appeared in court on Wednesday (29th) and was charged with kidnapping, rape and being found in possession of stolen property. This is in connection with the woman who claims that she was raped repeatedly next to the Thohoyandou Technical High School on 5 March. The cases have been combined, and Bele will appear in court again on April 4.

Several consumer activists, which included the National Credit Regulator (NCR), the Indepen-

dent Communications Authority of South Africa, the Information Regulator, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, and Makhado and Vhembe District Municipality attended the celebrations.

Monama said that, by celebrating World Consumer Rights Day, consumers got to know their rights and how to hold businesses accountable. He said when consumers were aware of their rights, they could make the best choices, knowing that they should not be mistreated or taken advantage of.

Consumers are protected by legislation and consumer courts have been established in the Vhembe, Capricorn, Sekhukhune, Waterberg and Mopani District Municipalities and at the department’s head office in Polokwane.

Monama explained what the function of the consumer courts is.

“To ensure that businesses comply with the conditions of their licenses, the department has established a consumer court that will adjudicate overall consumer complaints. The department has appointed personnel from the legal fraternity

to deal with consumer complaints,” Monama said.

Some consumer activists also had a chance to educate consumers on their rights. Tshifhiwa Ramugondo from the Information Regulator said the regulator’s day-to-day activities were to process personal information. Consumers have the right to give consent to their information but also have a right to request information to be deleted. Government departments and other businesses must know that any information that they have processed must be saved and secured.

Jimmy Golele from the National Credit Regulator, whose mandate is to regulate the credit industry, said consumers had the right to buy on credit but must be accountable for their debts. Golele advised consumers to always try to rather buy with cash. He also lashed out at private entities that keep people’s bank or SASSA cards to ensure that money borrowed was paid back in time. “This is not within the law. Consumers are advised to report such cases to the police or the NCR,” said Golele.

Bloodbath as man kills three before taking his own life

In one of the bloodiest weeks in Vhembe, a jilted man strangled his neighbour, stole his firearm and vehicle before fleeing the scene and going berserk by killing two more people before eventual-

ly turning the gun on himself. The incidents happened at Lwamondo and Mbilwi respectively on Thursday night, 23 March.

The movie-like scenes began to unfold when the man, Thinandavha Bravo Mulaudzi, attacked his 80-year-old neighbour, Mr Ngodiseni Samuel Shavhani, at Lwamondo Mutandani before stealing his firearm from the safe and his motor vehicle. He used the car to drive to Mbilwi village in Sibasa, where he shot and killed a man and a woman. The couple were identified as Mr Simon Ramutsindela Thifhelimbilu (49) and Ms Patricia Manavhela (48).

After the killings, Mudau reportedly fled to the nearby Mapate village, where he was spotted by villagers at a local liquor outlet.

The police were called,

but he managed to flee to nearby bushes, where he shot himself.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said three cases of murder and house robbery had been opened. Shavhani’s firearm and vehicle were also recovered. “The motive for the incidents could not be established yet, but a love triangle cannot be ruled out,” said Mojapelo.

Mulaudzi is said to have made his intentions known a few days before the incidents. On 7 March, he shared a post on his Facebook page where he said that he had to die, and that God must forgive him. He further urged everyone who still owed him money to pay him back.

Manavhela apparently also used Facebook as a mouthpiece. Apparently, she had shared a post on her Facebook page, where she pleaded with the community to help her,

Gabara family upset as conspiracy to murder case gets postponed

The Gabara family of Tshimbupfe went home disappointed again after the long-delayed court case of Ms Elelwani Jane Nedzamba, which was expected to resume at the Sibasa Regional Court on Thursday, 23 March, was postponed

yet again to sort out issues pertaining to the case.

Nedzamba (37) was arrested by the Hawks on 24 February 2021, after she had allegedly plotted with hitmen to kill the father of her son, a police officer at the Makhado Dog Unit, over a maintenance dispute. The Hawks received a tip-off from one of the hitmen Nedzamba had allegedly hired, who told them about the plans to assassinate Sergeant Jutas Gabara (46). Nedzamba was arrested shortly after she had made a withdrawal of R10 000, allegedly to pay the hitman.

The Gabara family, who described Nedzamba as “an evil woman”, was shocked when she appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court in 2021 for conspiracy to commit

murder and was granted a mere R1 000 bail, despite the seriousness of the charge.

The family spokesperson, Mr Nthambeleni Gabara, said the family was disappointed by the latest development and still did not understand how the court could grant bail to this “dangerous person”.

“We understand that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but as far as we understand, the Hawks have all the evidence that directly links Nedzamba to this conspiracy to have my brother killed. The fact that she is not in jail, that the so-called hitmen are also out there, is very difficult for us as a family to accept and we don’t feel safe. My brother and his wife are living very stressful lives because we don’t actually know Nedzamba’s next move. Anyone in the justice system who disagrees with us when we say that justice delayed is justice denied, let them prove us otherwise. We want to see this case finalised without even attempting to pre-empt the outcome of the court [proceedings],” he said.

The case was postponed to 20 April.

saying that her former lover (Mulaudzi) had bought a gun and that she was fearing for her life.

According to the family, Mulaudzi and Manavhela were lovers at one point, but Manavhela broke up with him. Mulaudzi, however, could not take no for an answer and insisted that they were in love.

Manavhela’s younger sister, Ms Azwidohwi Manavhela, said the family was traumatised by the incident. “He (Mulaudzi) could not accept that they were divorced now. He sent pictures of his gun to my sister’s phone and threatened to kill her one day,” she said.

Patricia leaves three children behind, one of whom is disabled. A funeral service will be held for Simon Ramutsindela on Saturday, 1 April, while Patricia Manavhela will be buried in Lwamondo village on Sunday, 2 April.

Medical fraternity shocked by deaths of popular doctor couple

The medical profession in Limpopo has been dealt a terrible blow, following the death of two well-known doctors. The married couple’s deaths appear to have stemmed from yet another tragic case of domestic violence, where the husband shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself.

Dr Tshimangadzo Muofhe (32) was attached to the Provincial Hospital in Polokwane, while her husband, Dr Mainfred Shikwambane (35), was attached to the Donald Frazer Hospital in Thohoyandou.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the incident happened at the Thornhill Estate in Polokwane on Monday, 27 March. The bodies of the deceased were reportedly found by family members who arrived from Vhembe that afternoon.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the couple had had a fight earlier that day. Muofhe was allegedly shot by Shikwambane, who then

turned the gun on himself.

Mojapelo said that although the motive for the incident was still unknown at this stage, domestic violence could not be ruled out. The police in Polokwane have opened a murder docket and inquest.

Shikwambana’s elder brother, Mr Thomas Shikwambana, said the family members were devastated by the death of the couple. “We have lost a jewel and exemplary young man in my brother. It is quite a sad and sombre week for all of us in the family as we are trying to come to terms with his passing. But we believe that God will help us through to give him a befitting send-off,” he said.

Muofhe’s younger sister, Ms Dowelani Muofhe, from Maniini Block Q, said her family was also still trying to come to terms with their grief.

In a statement, the Limpopo Department of Health said that it was saddened by the passing of two of their finest medical doctors. “This truly is a sad day for me and the entire department. We are devastated. Losing such hardworking,

dedicated and promising medical experts is a terrible blow for the department,” said the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba.

Dr Muofhe was working at the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the Provincial Hospital in Polokwane, while Dr Shikwambana was acting clinical manager at the Donald Fraser Hospital in Thohoyandou.

MEC launches the Easter Campaign

The MEC for the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Mr Rodgers Monama, launched the Provincial Easter Campaign at Kone Village Boutique Lodge in Ha-Ramantsha on 27 March.

Monama said that the Easter tourism season formed part of Limpopo’s summer campaign activities, which allowed the province to showcase its unique tourism attractions and products. “[The] Easter season is always an opportune time to welcome multitudes who are coming home to Limpopo and thus making our province the busiest destination. It is indeed an exciting moment to unveil our plans and packages to our

esteemed domestic market. Today we are gathered in this magnificent rural product to showcase the uniqueness of our province.”

He said the department had prioritised village and township tourism in the province to enhance tourism promotion. This is to allow communities in villages and townships to showcase their products.

Monama said that, at this time of the year, more than 1.5 million pilgrims flocked to the province to visit their various places of worship for the Easter period. He encouraged tourists to visit places such as the Nandoni Dam, Phiphidi Waterfalls, the Kruger and Mapungubwe National Parks, and other private game reserves in the province.

“In line with our sister Department of Transport and Community Safety, we are also

RTO’s launch provides a beacon of hope for local tourism industry

The tourism industry in the Vhembe District is set to receive a welcome boost, thanks to the launch of the Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO), which will serve as the voice for local product owners. The launch took place at the Mapungubwe National Park on Thursday, 23 March.

The tourism industry was hit hard by the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, and now, with the formation of RTO, they hope it will be revived to grow bigger and better.

Musina, Makhado, Thulamela and Collins Chabane local municipalities, with the aim of working with all the municipalities, the LEDET, and Limpopo Tourism Agency to make the tourism industry thrive again, particularly in the Vhembe region.

RTO was formed in August 2022 and has since been focusing on marketing the district’s tourist attractions. “We believe that, if our regional tourism industry is accessible and in good order, more visitors will come to our

area; our businesses will grow, and our people will get jobs. We also organise capacity-building workshops for our members and have campaigns to encourage local travel and tourism businesses to know and protect their attraction sites,” said Silimela.

Rose Mathukha, member of the mayoral committee in the Vhembe District Municipality, said they were ready to promote RTO and wished them the best in their endeavour to make tourism in the region a success.

calling for calm and restraint on the roads during this time and urge all our visitors to drive with caution and to arrive alive at their destinations. The Easter period is characterised by short visits by family and friends within the domestic market. We take this opportunity to call on all the citizens of the province to give all our visitors a warm reception,” said Monama.

The Limpopo Tourism Agency’s board chairperson, Mr Andrew Dipela, stressed the importance of collaborations with the tourism industry. He said the campaign could not succeed by running solo, without the involvement of the tourism industry. “We would be grateful to take hands with the tourism industry, being the drivers of the industry, to promote this beautiful province that has so much to enjoy.”

The newly elected chairperson of the RTO, Mr Mashudu Silimela, says the organisation will be representing product owners, including hotel owners, travel agents, tourist guides, tour operators, restaurant owners and all other businesses involved in tourism. He says the executive committee is elected by local tourism associations from

Basic human rights are guaranteed

Musina News

“Water is a basic human right, but we acknowledge that we have serious challenges and our people are not getting this precious resource timeously. However, we are working with the Vhembe District Municipality, who is the water authority, to make sure that these challenges are resolved.”

With these words the mayor of Musina, Cllr Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, tried to comfort a contingent of invited guests, community stakeholders and the general public during Musina’s Human Rights Day celebration last Tuesday (21 March).

The event, which took place at the Nancefield Multipurpose Centre, was held under the theme: “Promoting human rights and social cohesionleave no one behind, walk for your rights.” This was a joint

Clad in sportswear, Mawela took part in the fun walk and aerobics session prior to the formal programme. He said that Human Rights Day should be marked as an important event on calendars around the country. “This is the day on which we remember and sing praises to those who have perished in the name of democracy and human dignity. It is also a day on which we reflect and assess the progress we are making in enshrining basic human rights and values.”

Mawela said that, through

the Constitution, government had equally guaranteed basic human rights for all. “These rights include equality, human dignity, freedom of movement and residence, language and culture, and the right to life. It is important that we all jealously guard against any abuse of these rights because these rights are the foundation on which our freedom is based. It is true that we all have rights, but those rights are accompanied by responsibilities,” he said.

SABC Livhu’s application for bail gets postponed for another week

The bail application of Livhuwani “SABC Livhu” Madadzhe was postponed yet again this week.

His court appearance on Monday (27th) started late as the court could not work because of load shedding. The bail application was presented in the form of a written affidavit.

The state called its witness, Sergeant Rembuluwani Nekhavhambe, who is the investigating officer in the case. He said that Madadzhe should not be granted bail, considering the strong case they had against him.

Nekhavhambe testified that

Madadzhe was the last person to be with the deceased, Lindelani Nengovhela.

The application continued the next day (28th), with the state, represented by Mr Tovhowani Tshisaphungo, and the defence, represented by Advocate Ntsako Hlungwani, having made their closing arguments.

The court postponed the case to 6 April for the presiding magistrate, Mr Mukoma Maiwashe, to apply his mind for judgement.

Advocate TP Matodzi, the watching brief for the bereaved family, said he was happy that the state had successfully managed to present its case and that he was

Makhado Municipality scoops up SALGA awards

The Makhado Local Municipality (MLM) has been recognised by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for the work it has done the past year. SALGA Limpopo held their awards ceremony at The Ranch Hotel outside Polokwane on 15 March and MLM was awarded several certificates.

MLM received a certificate for sustaining an unqualified audit opinion for 2021/22 - the third consecutive financial year that this award has been bestowed on the municipality. The municipality also received an award for spending 100%

of their municipal infrastructure grant and was awarded an additional allocation of R16 million.

Makhado Mayor Samuel Munyai said he was honoured by SALGA’s gesture. He was quick to point out, however, that the reason why they were succeeding in their work was because they worked as a team.

“As a municipality, we work as a collective. This helps us to achieve what people think is impossible and helps us to succeed to the point where we get these awards. Many thanks to everyone: Municipal Manager Kent Nemaname, councillors and all the staff members, from junior to senior positions. This is a testimony that indeed

Makhado Municipality is committed to render services to the people. We achieved an unqualified audit opinion for the 2020/2021 financial year, and we maintained it for the 2021/2022 financial year. We are certain that we will achieve a clean audit opinion with the next audit. There are many projects in our communities. Some are still in the planning stage, while some are in the procurement process. Unfortunately, many of our community members are not informed. We appeal to our community-development workers and councillors to update our communities about the status of service-delivery issues in their areas,” said Munyai.

hopeful that Madadzhe would not be granted bail.

The deceased’s aunt, Ms Elsie Nengovhela, said however that the family was angered by Advocate Hlungwani’s behaviour. “He swore at us, using the worst vulgar words. We are not happy at all,” she said. Regarding Madadzhe, she said he should “rot in jail” and not be granted bail.

The murder charge against the comedian stems from an incident on 28 January this year, when the body of his late wife, Lindelani Nengovhela, was found in a water-filled trench at the couple’s home at Mangondi Sidou outside Thohoyandou. Madadzhe has been in custody since then.

Ozias Davhana wins R1,1 million in robotics and coding competition

Ozias Davhana High School

at Mpheni brought home a cheque to the value of R1,1 million after winning the SITA CSR High School Robotics and Coding Challenge. The competition was held at the University of Mpumalanga on 25 March.

The school’s learners showcased their creativity and innovation, developing unique solutions to real-world problems.

Four of Ozias Davhana

High’s learners represented the school by writing a unique essay and were selected as finalists for the competition.

Their motivation was that disabled and older people existed in their community who had no-one to take care of them while their caretakers or siblings went to work, school or out to do shopping. Their solution was a programmed robot that can help their loved ones by giving them food, medication and help them get around at specific times during the day while their caretakers are not around.

Ozias Davhana

High’s coordinator, Ms Sewela Sasa, was lauded for having put together and guiding the winning

team. She could not hide her excitement. “We are very proud of them; they put our school on the national map. We had all along hoped to win and get crowned national winners. We knew our time was coming. The money they had won will be utilised to build a robotic stem lab here at the school,” she said. Representing the participating learners, Rhandzu Hlungwane told Limpopo Mirror that the victory was not just theirs but was for the whole of Limpopo. “All the people of Limpopo should be proud, especially the Vhembe area. We thank God for this prestigious award bestowed on us as learners. It was not an easy journey, as we were competing against

different provinces, but because of the grace of God, Ozias Davhana High has won. We worked so hard in preparation for the competition, and we are very pleased with the results and the award we managed to bring home,” she said.

The Limpopo MEC for Education, Ms Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, was thrilled about Ozias Davhana High’s win. “There are not enough words to express how proud we are of the award given to one of our own rural schools. Such enormous recognition does not come easy and should be appreciated as a testament of selfless determination and excellence that we are privileged to see in our learners,” she said.

I left Zimbabwe to live in South Africa. I want to go back, but it’s not easy

Many South Africans wonder why so many of us Zimbabweans came to be settled in their country, and wonder why we do not simply return to our homeland.

This is my story – about my rural homestead in Zimbabwe that I felt forced to leave. I would like to go back and spend the rest of my life there, but the matter is not that simple.

From the early 1960s, I lived in Buhera District in Manicaland Province. I have a deep bond with this place, even though the soil is very poor for farming today.

In 1987, I got married. My uncle allocated me three hectares to build a family homestead. I was earning a salary that allowed me to build a three-bedroom house and a small rondavel immediately. Though my wish was to build a better home, I had limited resources.

We used to grow groundnuts and maize for our own consumption.

Then, around 1998, I became employed by the Zimbabwean Public Service Commission within the Department of

Home Affairs, and I relocated my family to Harare, because I was working there. Later, I was transferred to Masvingo District.

During these years, I used to employ someone to look after my home and the animals. I made sure that our family returned to our rural home every holiday.

In 2006, during the Zimbabwe economic meltdown, four of my six children were at boarding school. My salary had become tiny when converted to the South African rand or US dollar. I could not even afford my accommodation. My resources were so strained that I had to let go of the person looking after my rural home. I still used to visit regularly, but I noticed the house was being burgled and vandalised.

The situation was difficult. Should I leave my home to be vandalised, so that I could just focus on my children’s education? I decided this was the best I could do, and I had to all but abandon my rural home.

But what soon became apparent was that if I did not make a plan by the end of 2006, my children were going

to be forced to drop out of school.

I sought advice from a friend, a teacher, who used to buy shoes from Bata Shoe Company in Zimbabwe to sell in South Africa. I tried to join him, but this did not work out for me.

By 2007, I had noticed that a number of my friends had left for South Africa. My wife also went to Cape Town and was selling various things, such as brooms. I asked myself, “Should I, too, leave Zimbabwe for South Africa?” I had worked for nine years in the Department of Home Affairs. What work could I look for in South Africa? I simply did not know. My salary had become worthless, so I left my job. In March 2007, I left for South Africa.

But always at the back of my mind was my rural and true home, where I wished to retire one day. I love the place – the environment and its biodiversity. It has enough space for gardening and a bit of crop farming. I used to keep 10 head of cattle, but three were stolen and the others I had to sell.

By 2010, my home had been completely vandalised. I have no idea who had done it, but they not only stole everything – our clothes, the three-piece lounge suite, the kitchen utensils – they also made off with the window frames, the panes and the doors. This was distressing, but I had to remain

steadfast, concentrating on the education of my children.

I eventually found someone to look after the place again, but when he visited his family during the Christmas holiday, he never returned. I have been told he was seeking work at a mine about 60km east of my home. Once again, no one was staying at the house.

In November last year, I returned to find that the roof of the rondavel and the house

had caved in. I have, however, started to renovate the place, and I plan to extend it.

In 2009, the South African government introduced the Dispensation of Zimbabwean Permit, which became the Zimbabwean Special Permit (ZSP) in 2014 and the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) in 2017. Then the announcement was made that the ZEP would expire in June this year.

For all these years, I could

manage to support my family by working legally in South Africa. If the ZEP ends, I will have to return to Zimbabwe and live at my rural home.

I love my home and wish to stay there, but right now I am not sure how I will manage to do so financially.

Musina News

Budding community radio presenters from South Africa and Zimbabwe were equipped with much-needed skills during a joint radio enrichment session held at the Nancefield Multipurpose Centre on Sunday, 26 March.

A delegation, comprising nine members from Lotsha FM in Zimbabwe, joined their 24 fellow presenters from Musina FM in the historic first-ofits-kind initiative, aimed at empowering community radio presenters from both countries.

Musina FM was established 14 years ago, while Lotsha FM was officially launched in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, in February this year.

Facilitated by the popular former Phalaphala FM and Capricorn FM radio host, Jos

Ncube, the session touched on topics such as ethics in radio journalism, characteristics of a good radio presenter, the technical aspects of radio, time management in radio broadcasting, content production, radio marketing and interaction with listeners.

Musina FM’s station manager, Justice Langa, said that joining hands with Lotsha FM in line with the working relationship between the Municipality of Beitbridge in Zimbabwe and Musina Local Municipality was important.

“While the two municipalities are working together on service-delivery issues, we felt that we needed to expand this relationship into our broadcasting space. Besides that, we are one people, only separated by man-made borders, and it is important to keep that human

bond strong. We have learnt a lot through this session as we have shared practices that will help both Musina FM and Lotsha FM to grow,” he said. Thupeyo Muleya, the content coordinator and one of the founding members of Lotsha FM, said the session had been very beneficial to both parties. “Taking into consideration that Lotsha FM has been on air for only two months, the session was a learning ground for our presenters, who are still relatively new to the radio industry. The practices we have learned here will help us to build our new brand, which still needs a lot of support to grow. Our sincere gratitude goes to our colleagues at Musina FM and the facilitator, Jos Ncube, for coming together to organise this ground-breaking session,” he said.

Julia Nemakhavhani vows to preserve the Venda culture

Veteran Tshivenda traditional musician Julia Nemakhavhani said she would do whatever was necessary to ensure that the Venda culture, which she loved with all her heart, did not fade away

and become extinct.

The artist has once again proven her dedication and love with the release of her second album, Tshipure Maranga. The five-track album was released in February this year and, judging by the warm reception it received, is destined to become another great success. Songs such as Dandila, Tshipure Maranga (title track) and Nyamuofhe Bengo are already new favourites of the fans.

The 66-yearold-granny from Makwarani, outside Thohoyandou, has been in the creative arts for many years. In 1970, she founded and led a group known as Makwarani Sialala a Li Ngafi, but she only recorded her first album, Tangulani, in 2020. The album, with smoking hot tracks such as the title track, Tangulani, and Delele, became a hit with Tshivenda music lovers and received

massive airplay on radio and at community functions. She became very popular with the fans after this.

As to why she had taken such a long time to record her music, Nemakhavhani was quick to point out that the time had just not been right before. “It is true that it took me decades to come up with an album. It was not yet time for me to produce an album. I have been mentoring my community on different cultural dances, but now is my time to shine. God’s time is never wrong,” she said.

Nemakhavhani said she was overwhelmed by the support she was getting from her fans and that it encouraged her every day to work for her community. “I am born to serve and will continue to make my humble contribution as far as the arts are concerned. I am a teacher and have taught the different traditional dances to the young and old in my community, free of charge. I will continue to do this as long as God wishes,” she said.

The granny’s daughter, Ms Winnie Nemakhavhani, and her siblings manage their mother’s music. She hailed her mother as the best musician she knew.

Another prestigious award for Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila

Local music composer and singer Mercy Masakona

Madzivhandila is still in a joyous mood. She received the best music composition

award during a ceremony held by the National Institute for Human and Social Sciences (NIHSS) at the Javett Arts Centre in Pretoria on Thursday, 16 March.

According to the organisers of the event, the awards honour outstanding, innovative and creative as well as digital contributions that enhance and advance fields in human and social sciences.

The award was in recognition of Mercy’s sterling work in the production of her latest album, tshihwilili tshanga. Although the album was released more than a year ago, tshihwilili tshanga is still a hit with the fans.

Like many artists, Mercy’s love of music became clear when she was still attending Sunday School. She

Local radio presenter, scriptwriter, songwriter, musician and model Tsiko Mudau, famously known as Jayler Tee Miss j-Tee, has proven over and over that she really is a jill of all trades. The 25-year-old from Ha-Manavhela village outside Vuwani discovered her singing voice at an early age and sang in the church choir. Over the years, she began to mature musically and in 2021 started to record her own music, releasing her amapiano singles Stay and Mutambo, produced by Big Ropza. She has since collaborated with artists such as Aloe Pie and DJ Buzzy.

Jayler Tee Miss j-Tee remarked that she still had a big role to play in the music industry. “I want to work with big musicians, like Nkosazana’s daughter. She has inspired me a lot. I want to change the music scene and open doors for prospective young artists who are coming in behind me and prepare them for the many things that await them in the music industry,” she said.

Miss j-Tee

The artist is also a talented radio presenter who has worked with the Vuwani-based community radio station, Vuwani FM, as a producer and presenter on programmes such as Ria Vuwa, Rudzani Mbilu, Jam Jam Love, as well as on a youth programme called Youth on Ntumbu Mapfura Online Radio. Because of her unique radio presenting skills, she was invited to be a co-host and presenter on the Venda podcast in January last year.

Jayler Tee Miss j-Tee is also the brand ambassador of Kimmychickfashion Festival Kenya 2023, and currently works with Limpopo Home Cinema as a scriptwriter. “The challenges I come across are funding projects, mental health, discrimination, promoting one’s projects, music and events. Publishing delays and finding the right platform for publishing and advertising are sometimes hard, so it becomes a challenge altogether, with high competition. I sometimes she said.

later joined the International Christian Centre (ICC) Ministry Band under the leadership of Apostle Maxwell Masakona. The band released two gospel albums, with Mercy as the leading vocalist.

In the year 1997, she felt that she had reached maturity in the field of music. That prompted her to go solo and release her debut album, Yesu wa vhuthu, the following year. Yesu wa vhuthu was followed by Haho, Haho 2, Dzina lawe, Ha shanduki, tshilangano and A ri edeli, which were released between 2006 and 2018.

What makes Mercy’s music unique is the fact that she is not an ordinary musician, but she is also an academic. She holds a PhD in music from the University of Venda. Her doctoral study focused on “A descriptive analysis of tshifasi, an ordinary African musicological study’. In her study, Mercy argued that tshifasi had somehow been marginalised and overlooked by many people when compared to other cultural or traditional dances.

The award was the second for Mercy within the space of 12 months. She received another award during the South African Music Awards (SAMA) ceremony in August last year. She stated that the awards attested to the fact that her artwork was enjoying recognition both locally and nationally.

Mercy can be reached on 071 421 1272 for more information relating to her music.

Una Rine makes comeback with vibrant new single

Fans of Afro-soul and pop artist Una Rine are very excited about his vibrant new single, No Suffer,

New line-up at Phalaphala FM

which comes with an equally cool music video that features fellow artist Osome Feyn. The track, released on 21 March this year, marks a powerful comeback by both musicians.

Una Rine, born Una Rine Junior Mulondo at Mulodi village, is climbing the ladder to fame with a lot of determination. He has an unusual approach to making music, and No Suffer is no exception.

The song stands out because of its unique sound, which is a combination of soothing elements of Afro, infused with piano and backlog bass.

Una Rine believes that

if people pray for and support each other, they can achieve spiritual and physical prosperity, and that is what the lyrics of the song are about. “Holding hands is better than standing alone. With help and guidance, we suffer less. My mom and dad prayed for my journey. As the youth, we need to encourage one another and stand by each other. Then our success will be close,” he said.

Una Rine gained recognition after working with the multi award-winning King of VenRap, Mizo Phyll, a few years ago. He expressed his gratitude to his producer, Ndamulelo Masia Vuwani (also known as “Big Jay Beats”), for making his

record first live album

Tsiko Trevor Malindi, whose music career spans more than a decade, will be making history when he records his first live album on 28 April. He invites his fans to join him and become a part of this special project.

The highly celebrated local gospel music star, who enjoys massive support throughout the country, decided to record the live music album as a way of interacting and connecting with his fans. He said his previous albums had all been recorded in a studio, but this time, he wants his fans to feature on the live recording too.

The artist, better known as Tsiko Mal in the gospel music fraternity, was born 30 years ago at Makonde village outside Thohoyandou. He was raised in a Christian family, with his uncle, Fhatuwani Manyatshe, being a head pastor at the local church. His music career already took off at the age of 12, when he sang

in the Sunday School choir. His debut album, Here I am, which became a massive hit among gospel music lovers, was released in 2013, followed by another just-as-successful album, Goodness and Mercy, in 2017. In 2021, he released a single, titled Goliada, which was also very well received by his ever-growing fan base. His last offering was also a single, titled 1 John 4:4, and was released last year.

Tsiko Mal has performed at major music festivals around the country, sharing the stage with countless big names from the South African music industry.

About his upcoming live recording he said: “People love my music wholeheartedly and I thought of a way to thank them for their unending support. When you record music in the studio, you only interact with your band members and sound engineers. It came to my mind that there is a need to have my fans together in one place and sing along with

them.”

He said all systems were ready for this live recording, which takes place at the Disciples Christian Worship Centre, near the Mbaleni municipal graveyard, with recording starting at 17:00.

More information about the live recording is obtainable from Tsiko himself on 071 623 4297 (voice calls and WhatsApp).

DJ Tuksin releases debut album

Thendo Thukhutha from Tshilungoma, near Thohoyandou, also known as DJ Tuksin, rose to fame in October 2021 when he released an amapiano remake of the famous ZCC song, Tshivhidzelwa. This remix, which features local diva Makhadzi, opened many doors for DJ Tusksin and scored him a record deal with the Gauteng-based record label, Open Mic.

Since joining Open Mic, DJ Tuksin has released many hit singles, including Khethile khethile, featuring Mukololo, and his most recent single, Mukhavha, featuring Makhadzi and Fuza.

Mukhavha is the title track of his long-awaited debut album, Mukhavha, which was released last Friday, 24 March. The album includes other hot tracks such as Bambelela, featuring Vyn and Tonic Jazz, Hasha Mulilo, featuring Pertu Vee, Tshilangano, featuring Mukololo, Inkomo zam, featuring Nacley and Drizzy Sam Rsa, Tikakumane, featuring Temwah and Drizzy

Sam Rsa, and Kumanandi Ethandweni, featuring Eves Manxeba and Fuza.

DJ Tuksin said completing the album had taken him more than seven months. “My dream is for this album to reach gold within a few months of its release. I worked very hard on this album; it is an expression of my love for music. I love music because it heals me, and it calms me when storms brew. I find peace of mind through music. You can send a very powerful message through music, and people can learn a lot through music. I like the fact that artists from very different parts of the world can speak the same language through music,” he said.

DJ Tuksin fell in love with music at a young age. “I grew up playing the drums. Because I never got an opportunity to play drums in church, my parents decided to buy me a small set of drums, so that I could practise every day,” he said.

He completed his matric

music production remarkable.

Osome Feyn, born Vhuthu Tshisikule, is from Sabina Plaza in Thohoyandou. He said that the collaboration with Una Rine had come at a good time in both their music careers. “We’ve been discussing the possibility of collaborating and recording in the studio for the past three years. The energy of the session when we finally got together was in a spirit of prayer. Fans are actually in love with the video, and they are sharing and showing love, which we sincerely appreciate,” he said.

No Suffer is available on music platforms such as YouTube.

Thabelo Lindi Rambau from Ha-Ravele village outside Louis Trichardt is an enthusiastic and self-motivated 21-yearold author who believes she has come up with a soothing remedy for the spiralling scourge of gender-based violence. She is currently busy writing her second book, titled A call for Tranquillity, which is a collection of 69 poems that focuses on emotional factors, such as dealing with depression and anxiety. Her first book, On the Verge of Darkness, was published in 2022 by Ava’s Publishers.

Lindi, who is a level 3 student in office administration at the Vhembe TVET College’s Makwarela Campus, said that she was nearly done with her latest offering, which she hoped to release soon. “The two gap-years I took before I started my tertiary studies gave me the chance to really discover myself and this led to the birth of my first book, On the Verge of Darkness. However, I am almost done with my second book, which is a collection of short stories about gender-based violence – something that has become a big problem in our country. Anxiety and depression are the highest-rated causes of death worldwide. When it is diagnosed, horribly terrifying things happen and, in most instances, people do not speak out about it. I have tried to come up with solutions to encourage people not to die in their cocoons,” she said.

In 2022, Phalaphala FM reached the milestone of broadcasting to more than 1 million listeners. The station, however, believes that it can do even better and that their new lineup, effective from 1 April, will increase the station’s listenership.

Phalaphala FM is excited to bring in Ndivhuwo Pfuluwani as the new producer for their breakfast show, Vhandilani , from 06:00 to 09:00, Monday to Friday, with Terry “The Big Dude” Mudau who will continue as host. The show was previously produced by Rendani Sikhwivhilu.

Rofhiwa Nethengwe, who joined the station in 2006, will continue to host the Nne na Vhone show from 09:00 to 12:00. The programme appeals to a diverse audience. Mpho “MG” Rathando will maintain his Tshiko show from 12:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday. The show focuses on news, current affairs and topical issues such as politics, economics, labour, education and social issues in South Africa and around the world.

The afternoon drive show, Dzia Orowa , broadcast from 15:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, will still be co-presented by Shandu “DJ Shhh” Lukhwareni and Tico Liphadzi. Their show was previously produced by Ndivhuwo Pfuluwani, who now joins the Vhandilani show as producer, while Rendani Sikhwivhilu will be the new producer of Dzia Orowa.

The dynamic Mpande Mulaudzi, popularly known as “Miss P”, will continue to host Phenyadzinwe from 21:00 to 00:00 on Fridays, and the Dikita show on Saturdays between 21:00 to 00:00 to bring the Top 20 Local Kwaito and House Hits, Hip-Hop and R&B tunes to the listeners’ ears.

The station will further be introducing a brand new and innovative conversation and lifestyle programme, called Rodigeda, live on social media on Wednesdays from 20:00 to 21:00, presented by “Miss P”. This content will also be broadcast on the new SABC streaming platform.

The station is also excited to welcome two new presenters, Ngavhelo David Khakhu, who will present the Mutsindo wa Reggae show from 12:00 to 15:00 on Saturday afternoons, and Rotondwa Nelwamondo, who will present the Interfaith show on Sundays from 19:00 to 21:00.

Lindi said she would not have come this far, had it not been for the support she had received from her mother, Ms Norah Rambau, who saw potential in her daughter that no-one else saw. “She always encouraged me to write because she believed I would go far. She told me that if I couldn’t do it for other people, I should do it for her because she wanted to see my book in her hands one day. My publisher, Mr Charles Hoby, always gave me reason to move, and I have learned a lot in the writing department. I am also grateful to my mentor, Mr Fhatuwani Mauda, for affording me the chance to realise my dreams,” she said.

For more information or book orders, call Lindi on 076 820 8689 (WhatsApp), or follow her on Facebook (Thabelo Rambau prayer).

Phalaphala FM’s Ndi yone mini omnibus has a new slot and will be broadcast on Sundays from 04:00 to 05:30. The station also introduces a live church service from 10:00 to 11:00 on Sunday mornings, which will be streamed on social media and SABC streaming.

Phalaphala FM’s business manager, Madikana Matjila, thanked all their listeners, supporters and followers for the great support they show to the radio station. “We have seen a huge increase in our listenership numbers, time spent listening and brand loyalty, and these are attestable to our commitment and effort to deliver great programming.”

Delicious locusts and grasshoppers are now a source of income for smart thinker Maanda

Musina wants to recover R40m owed by debtors

Musina News

The municipal manager of Musina, Mr Nathi Tshiwanammbi, said the municipality had a plan to recover more than R40 million owed by consumer debtors, including businesses and government departments.

Tshiwanammbi was responding to questions directed at him by members of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) during a public hearing that was held at the Musina Show Grounds last Thursday (23 March).

The purpose of the hearing was to get answers from the accounting officer on various service-delivery issues. The MPAC, chaired by Cllr Nyambeni Makhado, is a committee of council tasked with overseeing how municipal resources are utilised.

Tshiwanammbi told the committee that the municipality implemented its credit-control policy effectively. He said in most instances, the credit control team effectively cut off services until arrangements were made with the debtors to service their debts.

“We are working on a debt-relief programme where consumers who pay a certain portion of their debts within a specified time would be relieved of their debt. We are also part of the provincial debt-management forum that aims to resolve statement disputes between

government departments and municipalities. Our experience so far has delivered positive results, and we continue engagements with the debtors with the aim of recovering these debts. We desperately need these monies in order for us to deliver quality and uninterrupted services to our people,” he said.

Asked why the municipality had only spent 84% of their capital funding during the 2021/2022 financial year, Tshiwanammbi replied that the underspending had partly been caused by delays in manufacturing of construction materials, such as precast concrete structures and steel structures.

“In some instances, there were delays in the supply of material resulting in minimal work done and inconsistent stipends for appointed local labour, hence the challenge of protests by the labour force. Project disruptions by some local community members caused serious delays in some of these projects. To avoid recurrence, we hold monthly progress meetings with service providers to monitor project duration, costs, and physical progress. Besides timeous site inspections performed by the technical personnel of the municipality, we also request service providers to submit a detailed programme of works and further ensure that they report monthly on progress against those submissions,” he said.

When Maanda completed his Grade 12 at Mpandeli High School in 2013, he did not have the financial capacity to further his education, nor could he find a stable job. For years, trying to keep afloat was a harsh reality for him, until one day, in 2019, when this smart thinker decided to take advantage of the abundance of locusts and grasshoppers in his village and start his own small business by catching and selling them.

“My message to the unemployed is that they must forget about people and do something that will generate honest money. We have to think outside the box and come up with sustainable means to earn a living. Locusts and grasshoppers are

seasonal, of course, so when they are not in season, I do other piece jobs to earn a living.”

He says that, at first, people laughed at him while he was catching these delicious insects. “Some people thought I was out of [my] mind, but they soon realised things were serious when people started to flock to my home to buy

the insects. I am happy that my business helps to put food on the table, and I don’t have to beg anyone for money.”

But catching these insects can be tricky and is very time consuming, says Maanda. “They are very active during the day. I have now devised a plan to catch them at night, using a torch, or very early in the morning, while they are still asleep and inactive. Although there is the danger of snakes at night, I never give up because this is my main income,” he said. He can fill a whole five-litre container with locusts and grasshoppers every day.

“These insects have a long life. You can put them in the deep freeze for five days, and after defrosting them for a day, they are still alive. I also pull the wings off and dry them, for those who prefer them dried.”

Maanda said he was willing to share some advice with anyone who needed ideas to start their own informal business, like he did. They can contact him directly on 076 177 7711.

Department of Education finally delivers the mobile classrooms at Maswie Secondary

The Tshakhuma branch of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) and parents whose children attend classes at Maswie Secondary School thanked the Limpopo Department of Basic Education for delivering their promised mobile classrooms last week.

This was after SANCO and parents had complained to the department about a dire shortage of classrooms at the school last year, with many Grade-10 learners having had to attend their classes under the trees.

Three mobile classrooms were delivered to the school, providing great relief to the school and the learners.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Limpopo Department of Basic Education for delivering the mobile classrooms. We are very grateful as our learners will now be able to attend

Sort out leadership squabbles, warns MEC Makamu at Makuya funeral

The MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Mr Basikopo Makamu, urged the Makuya royal family to address and sort out their leadership squabbles. He was talking at the funeral service of the late Thovhele Ntsweteni Makuya, which took place on Friday (24th) at the Ha-Makuya sports grounds.

“We don’t encourage chieftainship squabbles within the royal council because it will end up dividing the royal families and also tear them apart. We understand that there are dzikhadzi, makhotsimunene and ndumi (thovhele’s aid), who must sit together and build the royal council of Ha-Makuya, rather than the infighting, which according to me, hampers development,” said MEC

Makamu.

Makamu described the late Thovhele Ntsweteni Makuya as a champion for development in the Ha-Makuya area. He said his department used to engage with him about some developmental projects and he encouraged the royal council to continue their relationship with the department.

Thovhele Makuya passed away on 9 March after a long illness while being attended to by a doctor at a private surgery in Thohoyandou. Soon after he had passed on, tension started mounting between the royal council of Ha-Makuya and the queen (wife) of the late senior traditional leader as well as his girlfriend (lufarathonga).

Limpopo Mirror reported two weeks ago that Thovhele Makuya’s wife and girlfriend had collected his body from the mortuary and taken it to another mortuary, effectively

hiding it from the royal family members. This caused a lot of turmoil as the family members wanted to perform the necessary rituals but could not do so.

Several senior traditional leaders of the Vhavenda, such as Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rammbuda, Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe, Thovhele Khakhu and the representatives from the royal house of the Vhavenda kingship attended the funeral of the late Thovhele Makuya on Friday.

Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe, who represented both the local and provincial houses of traditional leaders during the funeral services, said that they had worked well with the late Thovhele Makuya in all functions pertaining to his chieftainship and they would miss his good advice.

Reading the obituary of the late Thovhele Makuya, Ms Tshililo Makuya said that he

had joined the then South African Police Force in 1985 and worked at the Masisi, Musina and Tshamutumbu police sta-

tions. In 1992, he was installed as senior traditional leader.

The MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mr Basikopo Makamu (right) shakes hands with Thulamela councillor Nndavheleseni Lieba. Behind them stand the Speaker of the Thulamela Municipality,

Final hurdles in ABC Motsepe league

This weekend marks the end of the ABC Motsepe League programme for the current soccer season. Four matches will be played on Saturday afternoon, while the other three will be seen on Friday.

Musina United must beat United Artists when they meet at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday. Musina United are fighting for survival in the second-last position on the log standings. The last two teams on the log will be relegated to the lower division.

Mikhado FC have already been relegated to the Safa

Vhembe Regional League as they are rooted at the bottom of the log. Mikhado will not play this weekend as they had already completed their league programme.

United Artists have only pride at stake in the match. The Lufule side are lying in the third position on the log standings, and what is quite likely is that their technical team will put most of their unknown players to the test in the game.

Vondwe XI Bullets will lock horns with Munaca FC at the Makhuvha Stadium. Munaca and Bullets are not safe regarding relegation. They are lying in the third and fourth positions from the bottom of the log

respectively.

Mpheni Home Defenders will play against Winners Park at the Bellevue Grounds outside Tzaneen. Home Defenders had already secured a place in the provincial promotional playoffs with their 3-1 victory over Giyani Happy Boys at the Makhado Show Grounds on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mopani derby between Giyani Happy Boys and Emmanuel FC will be played at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani. The three fixtures scheduled for Friday afternoon are Ditlou FC vs Ngoabe City Motors, Tzaneen United vs Mighty FC and The Dolphins FC vs PJ Stars FC.

Maindis Ladies prepare for a victory

Maindis Ladies are fast becoming the milk cow of the Hollywoodbets Super League. The team is still to deposit a point into its league account to date. Apart from the fact that they had lost all seven matches played so far, Maindis have already conceded 23 goals, scoring only four times.

Their most recent disappointing result was a 1-5 drubbing at the hands of University of Johannesburg FC at the UJ Campus Stadium last Saturday. Although the team’s performance is deteriorating with time, the chairman of the club, Mr Falaza Mdaka, is adamant

they have not lost all hope and that they can still recover. He vowed that they would resurrect from the grave and register their first victory this weekend.

Maindis will host Thunderbirds Ladies at the Malamulele Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Just like Maindis, Thunderbirds are still to win a league match this season. The only difference between the sides is that Thunderbirds have managed to collect two points so far.

Maindis’ senior players, Xiluva Tshabalala and Molatelo Thabana, will be available for selection on Saturday. The duo missed the team’s game last Saturday against University of Johannesburg FC because of

Big guns ready for action in Sasol Women’s League

The teams campaigning under the banner of the Sasol Women’s League in the Limpopo Stream are gearing up for their second round of league matches that will be played at different venues throughout the province over the weekend. Most of the matches will be played on Saturday, while only two fixtures are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

injuries.

The other Limpopo-based side, Copper Belts Ladies, will host University of Western Cape (UWC) at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane. University of Johannesburg FC will play their second home match in a row. They will entertain First Touch Academy at the UJ Campus Stadium. This will be the second away fixture for First Touch in succession after playing against UWC in Cape Town last Saturday.

The other fixtures are Durban Ladies vs University of Pretoria, Richmond United vs City Lads, Coal City Wizards vs TS Galaxy Queens, JVW FC vs TUT FC and Mamelodi Sundowns vs Royal AM.

SP T THE BALL Can you

After donating vital points to Two for Joy Ladies FC, to whom they lost 0-1 at the Shayandima School Grounds last Sunday, Lacoste Morning Stars are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for their next fixture. They will travel to Tshandama in the Mutale area on Saturday. Their match against Tshandama Young Stars will be played at the Tshandama Makhithani Grounds.

Young Stars started the new season with a draw. They managed to hold Masakona Liberty Experience to a 1-1 draw

Home Defenders crowned as the ABC Motsepe Stream A champions

Mpheni Home Defenders were crowned as the Limpopo ABC Motsepe Stream

A champions after beating the second-placed team, Giyani Happy Boys, 3-1 in their match that was played at a packed Makhado Show Grounds on Tuesday.

Defenders now have to wait for the winners of stream B to be determined, whom they will meet in the provincial play-off.

On Tuesday, the players nearly spoiled the game by demonstrating their rough tackles in the opening minutes. The referee calmed the situation by flashing three red cards and

numerous yellow cards in quick succession.

Happy Boys should have been the first to find the net. Their diminutive striker, Sello “Ferrari” Molewa, was unfortunate to see his volley go a little wide.

A defender of Happy Boys, Sandile Mbhense, handled the ball inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Lucky “Malaza” Buasi converted to make the score 1-0.

Defenders initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch but were denied several scoring opportunities. Thabelo “Walktoll” Tshikweta scored his team’s second goal

in the 40th minute. The goal was a wakeup call to the players of Happy Boys, who started to play their normal style of football soon afterwards. The half-time score was still 2-0 in favour of Defenders.

Happy Boys approached the last stanza with more confidence. No one was surprised when Siphesihle Sithole scored from close range after receiving a neat pass from Zimele Zuma.

Happy Boys lost cohesion in the middle of the park shortly after they had scored this goal. Defenders capitalised on the setback and pressed hard in search of more goals. Gift “Gitto” Nemutandani scored his team’s third goal.

Mauluma All Stars hammer United

Mauluma

All Stars were way too strong for Rabali Sokoutenda United and brutally beat them 4-0 in their Makhado Local Football League match played at Rabali on Saturday.

Stars kept applying pressure throughout the game. They scored their opening goal in the ninth minute via Rodney Managa, after he finished off a well-timed pass from Phindulo

Tshatsinde.

Stars increased the margin shortly before the break. Lefty Sidou caught the keeper of United, Mushe Mashamba, napping and beat him with a half volley.

Early in the second half, United threatened to score when Mulweli Ndou forced his way through the defence before passing the ball to Justice Ralushai. His attempt missed the target by a whisker. Moments later, Rodney Manaka won the loose ball in the

35-metre area and unleashed a volley just outside the penalty box. His attempt also missed the target by inches.

Stars increased the margin seven minutes into the last half. Tshilidzi Mapila scored after receiving a square pass from Tshifhiwa Nekhumbe.

Zwivhuya Bugana of United scored an own goal to take the final score to 4-0. He passed the ball back to his keeper, who was out of position and could only watch the ball go into the net.

Two victories for Manamani Birds

Last weekend was a joyful one for Manamani Blue Birds FC. The team managed to collect six points in the two Safa Vhembe Regional League matches they played.

Blue Birds did the unexpected when they rose to the occasion and beat the Stream

D2 pace setters, Univen FC, 3-1 at the Itsani Grounds on Saturday. As if that was not enough to demonstrate their seriousness about gaining promotion to the higher division at the end of the season, Blue Birds then went on to beat Mapate FC 1-0 at the same venue the following day.

Their goals against Univen FC were scored by Musa

Chauke, Fhatuwani Khangale and Makulane Maimela respectively.

Sunday’s game against Mapate was evenly contested. After less than ten minutes, Mapate realised that Sunday was not their day. The team’s captain, Aluwani Ravele, could not believe his eyes when he had tried his luck with a half volley from the edge of the box. The ball missed the target by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s enthusiastic supporters.

Mapate’s playmaker, Khumudzo Mulondo, was lucky not to see red in the 34th minute after he had handled the ball intentionally. The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for the half-time break.

The goal that allowed Blue Birds to collect three significant points came in the 69th minute. Musa Chauke gave the ball the final touch, following a scramble within the box.

Duthuni Happy Boys share the glory with Tshifulanani’s Flying Eagles

The Safa Vhembe Regional League game between Duthuni Happy Boys and Tshifulanani Flying Eagles that was played at the Duthuni Grounds on Saturday ended in a goalless draw.

The score was not a true reflection of the game as both sides had created numerous scoring opportunities that they could not convert into goals.

Happy Boys were out of touch in the first 15 minutes of the game. At that stage, the

visitors were dictating terms in all departments.

The keeper of Happy Boys, Awelani Mafadza, was a marvel to watch. He denied the Flying Eagles’ strikers several sure goals. His presence was felt when he braved Pfarelo Rathogwa’s shot and palmed the ball away for a corner kick 11 minutes into the game.

Happy Boys gained momentum with time and took the game to the Flying Eagles towards the end of the first half. The referee, Mr Fhulufhelo Masindi, had to flash several yellow cards in the match to

calm things down. The keeper of Happy Boys, Awelani Mafadza, was also booked later in the game. This after he had handled the ball outside the penalty area.

The result of the match did not affect the positions of the two teams on the log standings. Happy Boys are still in the ninth position with 19 points, while Flying Eagles are in the 10th spot with 16 points. Univen FC are still shining on top of the log, while Maniini Real Madrid are languishing at the bottom of the log.

Mutshidzi

Blue Birds moved up three steps on the log standings with the two victories. They are now lying in the third spot with 34 points, four behind the pace setters, Univen FC.

Ramaliba loses in the second round

Local super middle weight boxer Fhulufhelo Ramaliba lost his fight against Dillion Solomon in the ring last Friday (24 March) after being knocked out in the second round.

Ramaliba challenged Solomon for the Western Cape Provincial Championship boxing title at the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Cape Town.

Ramaliba, who is the only super-middle-weight boxer in Limpopo, was very confident that he would be taking the championship belt home. Both fighters entered the ring in high spirits, but Ramaliba seemed to have misjudged his opponent. With a vociferous home crowd behind him, Solomon worked

on the lower body of his opponent throughout the first round to weaken him, while Ramaliba kept aiming for the face.

In the second round, Ramaliba was caught with a mighty left punch to the right rib cage and started wombling in pain. Within seconds, Solomon connected again with a left hook to the jaw, and Ramaliba went down on his left knee and failed to beat the count.

His training manager, John “Smoking Joe” Nemakonde, said they would go back to the drawing board and rectify their mistakes. “He is young and has a long way to go. The problem we have is that he is the only super-middle-weight boxer in the province, and it is very difficult to get opponents for him.

He has to be active all the time,

because not fighting for a period of time affects the boxer’s rhythm in the ring,” he said.

Ndamulelo Mudau of Flying Eagles controls the ball, while Moses Mudau of Happy Boys is on his heels.

Tshimuthe fail to collect valuable league points against Rising Stars

Tshimuthe FC dropped two valuable points when they played to a 1-all draw against Matangari Rising Stars in an entertaining SAB League game played at the Matangari Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

Before the weekend’s match,

Tshimuthe FC was trailing log leaders Mukula Young Santos by two points, but now Santos have increased the margin by two more points after trouncing Matangari High Aims 3-0 on the same day.

Tshimuthe FC took the game to Rising Stars, using both flanks to penetrate their opponents’ danger zone. In the 15th minute, their midfielder Vhudzani “Carlos” Mananga dribbled past three players on the left flank before being brought down by Rising Stars’ defence just short of the 18-metre area.

The referee awarded them a free kick.

Like a seasoned international player, Mananga curled the resultant free kick into the roof of

the net to make the score 1-0.

Tshimuthe FC piled on the pressure to increase the margin before half time but failed to crack their opponents’ defence.

In the second half, Rising Stars started controlling the game from the middle, where their defensive midfielder, Lutendo Matidze, controlled proceedings. Seeing that they were in danger, Tshimuthe FC deployed more players to the defensive line, inviting their opponents to attack them at will. They seemed to forget the golden rule in football that the best method to defend is to attack.

In the 85th minute, Rising Stars were awarded a free kick a few metres from the danger zone. Mushumo Ngwana showed that he is also a free kick specialist when he sent in a thunderous shot into the right corner of the net to even the score.

Now it’s do or die for Black Leopards

After a break of two weeks, the teams competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship League will be in action again this weekend. The game that is expected to produce some fireworks will be the Limpopo derby between Black Leopards and Baroka FC that will be played at the Global Stadium in Lebowakgomo on Sunday afternoon.

Apart from the fact that sparks usually fly in derby games, something else makes Sunday’s fixture

an extraordinary derby. Black Leopards and Baroka are fighting for survival. Lidoda duvha are rooted at the bottom of the log while Baroka, or Bakgakga as they are affectionately called, are lying in the fourth spot from the bottom of the log.

The last two teams on the log standings will be relegated to the lower division at the end of the season. Black Leopards’ performance is improving with time after Mr Owen da Gama took over as the head coach for the team early last month. The good news for Leopards is that the team’s scoring machine, Tiklas Thutlwa, will be available for selection on Sunday.

Thutlwa was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in their game against Casric Stars that was played at the Malamulele Stadium two weeks ago. Should he be in the team’s first 11, Thutlwa is expected to form a good combination with Matimu Tshabalala in the striking force.

Tshabalala scored Leopards’ only goal in their game against Casric Stars. The final score was 1-1.

Venda Football Academy will play against Pretoria Callies at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium outside Pretoria. The other weekend fixtures are Casric Stars vs MM Platinum, Hungry Lions vs Uthongathi FC, JDR Stars vs Cape Town Spurs, Polokwane City vs University of Pretoria, Tshakhuma

Tsha Madzivhandila FC vs Cape Town All Stars and Magesi FC vs Platinum City Rovers.

Two for Joy crush Lacoste Morning Stars

Two for Joy Ladies FC started the new season with a bang by beating Lacoste Morning Stars 1-0 in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Shayandima School Grounds on Sunday.

Morning Stars demonstrated their appetite for goals from the first whistle. They took the game to the visitors from the Nzhelele Valley from the onset. They were awarded two free kicks within the visitors’ danger area inside the first 15 minutes of the game. In the first instance, Mulalo Mufanadzo tried

her luck with a ground cutter. The ball hit the defenders’ wall of Two for Joy and landed outside the field of play for a corner kick.

Realising that they had nothing to fear, Two for Joy started to play their normal attacking football towards the end of the first half. They managed to create a few scoring chances, but their strikers were not accurate at the goal finish.

The game turned lukewarm in the opening minutes of the last half. At that stage, the players were looking weary. One factor that contributed to the Stars’ defeat was their delay

in replacing their striker, Unarine Nembaleni. Although Nembaleni was more of a placeholder in the last half, the technical staff only considered replacing her with Gumani Mulibana later in the game.

Two for Joy were awarded a penalty later in game. A defender of Morning Stars, Asiashu Mudau, handled the ball within the box, prompting the referee to point at the white spot. Vutlhari Kubayi blasted in a rocket from the penalty spot.

Two for Joy were playing defensive football in the last 10 minutes of the game to defend their lead.

Two Safa Vhembe matches get abandoned after incidents of violence

Saturday’s local derby between the current log leaders of Stream E in the SAFA Vhembe league, Makhitha Oscar Stars, and Muraleni United Brothers could not be completed after a player was assaulted by a fan shortly before the end of the match.

This was, however, not the only match to be abandoned the past weekend. A similar fracas broke out in the match between Maelula United Brothers and Khalavha Napoli, played at the Maelula Grounds on Saturday.

In the Stars vs United

Brothers match, the score was still 2-1 in favour of Stars when the match was stopped. The keeper of Stars, Faith Ratombo, was allegedly assaulted by a fan of Muraleni United Brothers, with only 15 minutes left on the clock.

Up to that stage, the game was evenly contested, albeit amidst some fierce rivalry. Stars were rock-solid in defence, thwarting several promising moves from United’s strikers. Once on the attack, Stars’ midfielders hesitated and failed to feed their strikers good balls. All in all , the game was one of cat and mouse, which could still have gone either way,

were it not for the unpleasant incident that caused the match to be abandoned.

In the Maelula United vs Khalavha Napoli match, chaos erupted when Brothers scored a goal. A Napoli official later alleged that one of their players was assaulted by a Brothers fan while Brothers were celebrating their goal. The official then went onto the pitch and surprised everyone by instructing his players to leave the pitch.

According to the manager of Maelula United Brother, Mr Khathutshelo Muvhumbe, his team scored what he described as the goal of the day when Napoli’s supporters and players

stormed onto the pitch. The players confronted the referee, angrily accusing him of favouritism. Muvhumbe alleged that one of his players was assaulted in the process.

The SAFA Vhembe secretary, Mr Sam Matodzi, said that he was still waiting for reports from the teams, the referee and the assistant referees. “Once we get these reports, the teams will appear before a disciplinary hearing,” said Matodzi. He appealed to all teams playing within his association to control their supporters in all matches and refrain from bad things such as assaulting match officials and players.
