Quadruplets take the tally to twelve

The arrival last week of four new babies for the Chauke family of Masisi, in the northern part of Vhembe, came as a complete surprise. They were expecting twins, but four baby girls were delivered in the rural clinic. The family now have 12 children, five boys and seven girls.

The 38-year-old Vulani Chauke decided to walk to the clinic at Masisi last Tuesday (18th) for a check-up. Her delivery date was believed to be in November, but she felt she needed to visit the clinic.

On her way to the clinic, Vulani met a midwife working at the clinic, Tshililo Mphaphuli. She was on her way home after closing the clinic at the end of the day. Although the clinic at Masisi does not operate 24 hours and the staff members were officially off duty, Mphaphuli and some of the other nurses immediately took charge of the situation. They realised that the mother-to-be needed urgent assistance.

One of the problems that nurse Mphaphuli and her helpers had to face was that the patient was a foreign national and no history of the pregnancy that

they could check was available. They realised that they would have to deliver the baby or babies without knowing whether the mother had a history of complications.

Nurse Mphaphuli was later applauded for her bravery by the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba. “Naturally delivering of quadruplets is a risky and a delicate process that is not done at clinics but at hospital, under the supervision of doctors. But this brave midwife, together with her staff, rose to the occasion. The mother and her bundles of joy were thereafter transferred to Donald Fraser Hospital,” she said.

Vulani’s husband, Mr Liberty Chauke, was still very excited when Limpopo Mirror contacted him earlier this week. “Glory to God for such a blessing. We were expecting twin babies, but, surprisingly, Vulani delivered quadruplets,” he said.

“I call my wife every day, checking on how my children are growing. I am told they are

very well. The first of the four girls is named Chishamiso, which mean miracle,” said Liberty.

Four new babies for the Chaukes

(From page 1)

Mr Neil Shikwambana, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Health, con firmed that the mother and her babies had been admitted to Donald Fraser hospital and that they were doing well. He said that the fourth girl was receiving specialised treatment, because of her low weight and mild respiratory distress in her nasal canals. He said that, at birth, the first-born had weighed a mere 2080 grams, the second and third 1 800 grams and the fourth only 1 200 grams.

“Looking at the complexity of the process they underwent in order to deliver these children, we are really proud of their dedication. The fact that the nurses had knocked off but had to go back to be on duty just to assist this one pregnant woman also needs to be commended. Contrary to the popularised narration, our nurses aren’t all heartless,” said MEC Ramathuba.

She urged pregnant women to prioritise their antenatal consultations to reduce any surprise risks during childbirth.

Liberty is not permanently employed and lives from piece jobs. Asked how he would take care of the newly born quadruplets, Liberty said, “I believe in God. [Taking into account] the wonders He (God) performed by giving us four children, I am sure [there] will be the same wonders on how to take care of the quadruplets,” he said.

Granny Mafuvha (102) passes on

The Ravele community is saddened by the death of Vho-Mukumela Mafuvha, who passed away on Satur day, 22 October, at the age of 102 years.

Granny Mafuvha, who was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ravele, had not been well for some time and died at her home.

The late Mafuvha’s son, Mr Freddy Mafuvha, said that the family members preferred

to celebrate the life of their beloved old mother, who had been a pillar of strength to so many for the past 102 years. “My mother was a great leader and a great lady. She will always be remembered for her dedication to her family and church activities, which made her the darling of thousands of church members. She was one of a kind, a unique person who was always ready to help others. We have lost a great mother,” he said.

Fellow church member Mr Alfred Malada said that, although Mafuvha’s death was

hard for them all, they were consoled by the knowledge that she had worked tirelessly for the Lord until her last day on earth. “She dedicated her life to the church, and the church has undergone a positive metamor phosis because of her. We know she is enjoying her new life in the hands of the Almighty. We would also like to thank God for giving us this wonderful gift of knowing her,” he said.

Mafuvha will be buried on Saturday, 29 October, at the Ravele graveyard. The service starts at 06:00.

Photographer dies in car accident

The Vhembe region mourns the untimely death of wellknown photographer Taka lani “Bravo” Mulaudzi (27), who died in a car accident at Madabani on Saturday night, 22 October.

His sister, Ms Makonde Mu laudzi, said his tragic death was a big blow to the family and in dustry. “He dedicated his life to serving the community without expecting anything in return. He would respond to any call at short notice. The family will not be the same without him. He might have gone, but his good work will stay with us forever,” she said.

Mulaudzi’s best friend, Mr Molatelo Machaba, described him as a great man whose sweat and hard work had brought many changes to the community he served. He said Mulaudzi was a mentor to up-and-coming photogra phers, an icon of hope, a role model, and a true leader in his society. “Painfully, we came to understand that God, our Creator, only looks for the best candidates to fill the vacancies that may have been created in his Heavenly Place. When death strikes, we begin to ask ourselves several questions that we cannot even answer. So long, my brother; we will miss you,” he said.

The founder of the Limpo po Photographers Group, Mr Pfarelo Masutha, sent his con dolences to Mulaudzi’s family and friends. “We are saddened by the sudden departure of our colleague. He was a man of substance who earned the respect of everyone through his consummate photographs around Limpopo. He was a unique photographer who was able to express what a thou sand words cannot. Mulaudzi

was reliable and competent, but it was his hard work that made him a supreme photog rapher. His contributions to the development of younger photographers in Vhembe will always be remembered. His unmatched photographic skills will continue to guide young photographers to pick up the spear where he has left off.” Mulaudzi will be buried at Ravele on Saturday, 29 Octo ber. The service starts at 06:00.

Univen student stabbed to death during tavern brawl

The police in Levubu are investi gating a case of murder after one of Univen’s students was stabbed to death at a tavern in Tshakhu ma village last weekend.

According to acting Vhembe police spokesperson Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, the incident occurred on Sunday morning (23 October), at Mmbadi Tavern, near the Tshisi mani TVET College. The victim, Khuthadzo Cornelius Sinthumule (24), was apparently drinking at the tavern when a group of about six men showed up and started provoking people. A squabble en sued between the victim and one of the men from the said group. One of the men then stabbed the victim

in the chest with a sharp object that resembled a knife. The victim was certified dead at the scene.

The suspect, Nkhumeleni Chabala (19), was arrested and ap peared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 October. The case was postponed to 4 November for further police investigation while the suspect remains in custody.

Univen spokesperson Dr Taka lani Dzaga expressed his shock over the incident and urged law enforcement to investigate the matter speedily. “We are saddened by the news of the death of one of our students over the weekend. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Sinthumule family in Tshakhu ma-Muhovhoya,” said Dzaga.

29-year-old man accused of kidnapping and murder

A 29-year-old man from Masethe, in the Tshitale area, is facing charges of kidnapping and mur der after the body of a woman, also from Masethe, was discov ered.

The woman, identified as Nkhangweleni Mavis Musesi (47), mysteriously disappeared earlier in September this year. When she could not be found at her house or anywhere, a family member report ed her as missing.

On 15 September, the relative received a strange call from an unknown man, from Musesi’s

cellphone, who told the relative that she had been kidnapped. The man demanded a ransom of R5 000 for her release. The relative went back to the police and informed them about the phone call. A kidnapping case was opened, which was taken over by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investiga tion.

On 9 October, Musesi’s body was found inside her own house at Masethe by a family member, who decided to go back to the house. The body was already in a state of decomposition by then. A case of murder was subsequently opened and further investigations ensued.

The tireless probing into the case by the police finally paid off. One suspect was arrested at Greenside village, in the Westenburg polic ing area outside Polokwane, on Saturday, 22 October. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspect was in possession of the same cellphone that was used to demand the ransom. They are still looking for more suspects connect ed to the kidnapping and murder.

Konanani Masindi appeared in the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 October. His case was postponed to 2 November, for a Legal Aid representative to be ap pointed and possible bail arrange

ments to be made. The accused remains in custody.

Limpopo police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe saluted the members of the investigating team for working around the clock to en sure the suspects were all arrested.

“We are appealing to community members to assist with information about the remaining suspects,” she said.

Anyone with information that can assist in the apprehension of the remaining suspects can contact Lt Col Rodney Ndou on 082 807 2666, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, their nearest police station or MySAPSApp.

Ronewa through to finals of Miss Universities of SA

Ronewa Mafunzwa (20) from Tshishivhe village in the Mutale area is a finalist in the prestigious Miss Universities of South Africa 2022 competition.

The crowning ceremony will be held at the Blue Waters Hotel in Durban on 26 November, and all eyes are on the lovely contestants.

Mafunzwa is a final-year BSc stu dent in mathematical and computer sciences at the University of Lim popo. Besides all the glamour and limelight, she has a soft spot for the less privileged and encourages the youth to take education seriously.

“There is a stigma attached to beauty contests, where people think those involved cannot go far with their education. I love modelling, but it does not define me. The mod

elling industry needs more women who are caring, loving, supportive and giving, besides being beautiful, and I have those characteristics. That’s why I love it. I am ready for any challenge. I dream big; I don’t set small goals for myself. I tell my self that success without hard work is a myth, and I give all I’ve got. My hope is to win the pageant and use my reign in a purposeful, changing manner. With the Miss Universities

of South Africa title, you become a public figure, and I would love to be an agent of change through being the better me every day,” she said.

She draws inspiration from well-known South African model and former Miss SA Shudufhadzo Musida. “When she was crowned Miss South Africa, it gave me real hope. Optimism is a skill, and those who dream big achieve more.”

R1,1 billion allocated to fix N1 north to Musina

The South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) confirmed on Tuesday that it will spend approximately R1,1 billion to upgrade the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina. This was in response to questions asked by the Limpopo Mirror regarding the deplorable state of this road, hailed as the Gateway to Africa.

Over the last couple of weeks, the newspaper has been inundated with complaints about the poor state of the road, specifically regarding potholes. One frequent road user, Mr Jaco Lyon from Mopane, actually went out and counted the number of potholes on a 13-kilometre stretch of the N1 between Bokmakierie and the Riverside Nursery the past month. In total, Lyon counted 583 potholes in this section of the road.

Last week, the Limpopo Mirror’s curiosity was triggered by a number of environmental-impact-assessment (EIA) notices about fences and farm gates along this section of road. The notice is for the proposed upgrading of the “SANRAL SOC LTD National Road 1 (N1) Section 29, from Masekwaspoort (Km 27.80) to Musina (Km 70), Limpopo Province”. According to the notice, the project will entail the general upgrading of the 42.2 km-long road section,

including six major intersections, a number of farm accesses, three road bridges and seven major culverts located along the route. The object of the notice is to invite the public to register as interested or affected parties as the project will include upgrades and associated mining activities, seeing that the material for the project will be sourced from seven borrow pits, encompassing an area of up to 125ha located along the road.

Written questions about the proposed upgrade project were sent to SANRAL, and they responded on Tuesday.

Asked when the project was scheduled to commence, Mr Madoda Mthembu (SANRAL Northern Region’s operations and maintenance manager) stated that the tender advert for the construction project would go out in November this year.

He added that the exact project value was not yet known at that stage, up until SANRAL had received tender submissions. He did, however, estimate the value at R1,1 billion.

Mthembu referred to the EIA notices along the route. “The construction will remain inside the existing road reserve; the only environmental approvals required are for the borrow pits and for the water-use licence,” he said.

Although the scheduled project is good news for road users in the long run, the ques-

tion, however, remains what SANRAL is going to do about the present state of the road. Regarding this, Mthembu said that they had a routine road maintenance (RRM) project addressing road failures such as potholes that is outsourced to contractors. “They [the contractors] are supposed to ensure that the road is free of potholes on a daily basis and they have been given a budget to fix failures, of which they had already started with the repairs,” said Mthembu. He added that the contractors had been procured by SANRAL through an open-tender process. Judging by the current state of the road, many road users will feel that these contractors obviously seem to be losing the battle against the potholes.

Asked whether the current state of the road could be contributed to factors such as poor design, increased heavy-vehicle traffic or that the road had just reached the end of it life, Mthembu said that the problem was a combination of the latter. “The road has reached its design life and the increase of heavy vehicles from SADC countries also contributes to failures,” he stated. Regarding the amount of traffic carried on this section of the N1 daily, Mthembu said: “The current projection is that there are over 4 000 vehicles per day, of which heavy vehicles make 32% of that figure.”

328 OCTOBER 2022LIMPOPO MIRROR
The pothole-infested N1 north, hailed as the Gateway to Africa, has become a nightmare driving experience for road users. Not only is it causing millions of rands in damage to vehicles every year, it also contributes to the loss of life. SANRAL announced this week that they will upgrade this section of the N1 at an estimated cost of almost R1,1 billion. Photos: supplied. Supa Quick back in business just three days after devastating fire

The landmark Supa Quick Tyre Centre in Shayandima (Thohoyandou) was almost completed gutted by fire last Thursday morning, but through the owners’ resil ience, the tyre centre was back in business on Monday morning, albeit from a dif ferent premises.

According to the 67-yearold Mr Piet Visagie, who co-owns the centre with Mr Theuns du Toit of TJ Supa Quick, the fire started during the early hours of 20 Octo ber. A security guard on duty heard the alarm go off just after 03:00. He went to inves tigate but could see nothing wrong. The security company re-activated the alarm, but three minutes later, the alarm went off again. This time the security guard noticed smoke billowing from the adminis tration office. He immediately phone the security company and then Visagie.

“I got the call around 03:30 and asked one of my staff members to go and unlock the building. I then phoned the fire brigade. They arrived there with a Cruiser with 200 litres of water. When they saw the fire, they said that they did not have enough water en left without saying anything more,” said Visagie.

At first, Visagie was very

upset that the fire brigade had left. Little did he know that they had actually gone back to mobilise more support.

“Twenty-five minutes later, the first of several fire trucks pulled in,” said Visagie. The fire trucks were mobilised from fire stations across the district, including the Vhem be, Vuwani, Malamulele, Collins Chabane and even the Mutale fire station.” So much support arrived that Visagie could tell the Levubu farmers, whom he had mobilised after the first firefighters had left the scene, to stand down.

“If there is one thing I can say about these guys [the firefighters], is that they know what they are doing. Within two hours, they managed to extinguish the fire, restricting it to the front of the building and saving my tyre ware house,” said Visagie. Visagie added that they had also managed to get the gas bottles inside the premises out before they could explode.

As to the cause of the fire, Visagie said that they suspect ed that the continuous load shedding might have contrib uted. “The clever people told me that every time they switch off the electricity and switch it on again, there is an electricity spike. Over time, these spikes can damage electrical wiring,” said Visagie.

At the time of our going to press, Visagie was still waiting

for a final assessment of the damage caused in monetary terms. “I can tell you this - it is going to be a lot of money,” said Visagie. He was grateful that he had insurance, stating that he had on numerus occa sions asked himself whether paying such high monthly insurance premiums was worth the money. “I was one of those guys who always said it could never happen to me,” said Visagie.

Visagie was very grateful towards all who responded to the fire and offered assistance, including the Levubu farmers, members of the Soutpans berg Rural Safety group and the local police and forensic unit, who were on the scene at 06:00 that morning to take statements and photos and start their investigation. He also thanked Mr Pieter Lordan for helping him to relocate to new premises.

“Lastly, to every member of TJ Supa Quick, thank you for your efforts in our relocation and words of support. Our team came together in a time of destruction and chaos and made the best of a bad situation … The good Lord was actually very good to us under the circumstances,” said Visagie. This is especially true for the 35 staff members in Visagie’s employ, who will still be able to take home a pay cheque it the end of the month, despite the tragedy.

Emotional funeral for 9-yearold Uhone after tragic suicide

Family, friends, fellow learn ers, and the entire commu nity of Thathe Vonde village near Phiphidi were left silent from shock and heartbreak, following the tragic death of nine-year-old Uhone Divine Dzhandzhi. Uhone, who was a Grade 4 learner at Tshanowa Primary School, allegedly took his own life on 15 Octo ber this year.

The boy’s devastated mother, Ms Florence Mukwevho, told the police that she had last seen her son playing under a tree with a rope and warned him not to play with it. She later found him hanging from the tree, with the rope tied around his neck.

According to acting Vhem be police spokesperson Sgt Vuledzani Dathi, the police in Thohoyandou have opened an inquest docket, but no foul play is suspected.

This incident shook the community to the core. A very emotional funeral service was held for Uhone at the village on Saturday, 22 October.

His classmates, dressed in school uniform, paid tribute to him, remembering the charming, cool and collected young boy who was among the top-performing learners in his class. “Forever in our thoughts.”

“Always in our thoughts.”

“Thinking of you always.” These were some of the messages written on placards by his classmates.

Speaking at the funeral, the circuit manager of Tshinane, Ms Nkhangweleni Mulaudzi, said they were saddened by the untimely passing of the young learner. “It is very upsetting to learn about the death of such a bright young pupil, who still had so much to aspire to,” said Mulaudzi.

Mr Nelson Matsea, princi pal of Tshanowa Primary, also conveyed his deepest sympa thy with Uhone’s family and described the incident as a tragedy.

Reading the obituary, Ad ivhaho Dzhandzhi, a close rel ative of the family, said the late Uhone started pre-school at the local Tshanowa Community Crèche. In 2018, he began his

primary schooling as a Grade R learner at Tshanowa Primary, until his death.

She said Uhone’s family was very proud of his good grades in school and the boy he was in general. He was always seen helping his parents at his fa ther’s spaza shop after school.

Uhone is survived by his father, Mr Vhahangwele Dzhadzhi, mother Ms Flor ence Mukwevho and two siblings, Atondaho and Ompha Dzhandzhi. He was buried in Mukumbani village.

Mother reckons police are putting lives at risk by not arresting man

In February this year, Tshinanne Siobo (38) of Murunwa lost her 12-year-old son after her begrudged ex-boyfriend allegedly threw a petrol bomb into their house. Siobo and her other child also suffered serious burn wounds. The incident was reported to the Vhulaudzi police at the time, but nearly 10 months later, the aggrieved mother is still living in fear for their lives as she waits for the police to ar rest the suspect, whom she positively identified.

She is accusing the police of being unsympathetic and not making any effort to bring the suspect to book.

“The police have failed us as a family.

I have tried everything to have the man arrested, even going to the extent of directing the police where to find him, and still nothing has happened. That man might strike again and finish us as he clearly in tended to do. We are desperate and don’t know where else to seek help. The police are reluctant to arrest him and this is a great concern for me. My son lost his life because of this man, but the police do not seem to notice my pain. They have no empathy at all and are also neglecting their duty. As long as that man is still roaming the streets, we will not have peace in our hearts,” she said.

Siobo’s mother, Ms Rebecca Siobo, is equally disappoint ed. “We have waited for a long time for the police to arrest the suspect. This is a miscarriage of justice, and I fear he might do the worst and kill her. She has children. Who will then look after them?” she said.

The police believe Bebeda Godfrey Mbangiseni can assist them with their investigation. Anyone who knows where he is, can contact Sgt Kenneth Phaswana on 071 677 1766 / 015 973 5200.

Local community leader Mr Richard Ramabulana said they had received a complaint about this case on Thursday, 20 October. “We are shocked and disappointed about the whole case. Something is not right here, and we have taken it upon ourselves to see to it that the man is arrested and the family has peace of mind,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said

that investigations in the matter were still ongoing. He confirmed that the suspect was still at large and urged members of the community to assist with information that could lead to his arrest. He further assured the family that they will be updated about the progress of the investigation.

The police has since released a photo of the suspect, Bebeda Godfrey Mbangiseni, and has urged members of the public to contact them, should they know his whereabouts. Anyone with information can contact investigating officer Sgt Kenneth Phaswana on 071 677 1766 / 015 973 5200.

DJ Fire’s death a shock to entertainment fraternity

The entertainment fraternity in Vhembe learnt with tremendous shock about the tragic death of the well-known Deejay, Rofhiwa Ndou, popularly known as DJ Fire.

The 28-year-old radio pre senter was found in his room on Wednesday, 19 October, where he had presumably hanged himself. He was last seen a week prior to his death, on Thursday, 13 October.

Ndou hailed from Siloam in Nzhelele. He rose to prominence and made a name for himself as a producer at Nzhelele FM.

His sister, Ms Livhuwani Tshivhenga, said his death had caught them completely off guard.

“The last time we had contact was on Friday, the 14th of October, and he never complained about anything or expressed that something was bothering him. I just wish he had told us as his family that he had problems. Maybe we could have found a way to help resolve them. This is very difficult to deal with. It’s just so hard to accept that he is really gone. He had so many dreams of a

brighter future, and now all that is gone. We are devastated and left with many unanswered ques tions,” Tshivhenga said.

Soon after the sad news of his passing became known, tributes started pouring in through vari ous social media platforms.

His manager and a former col league at Nzhelele FM, Mr Wilson Davhana, or Mr D Davhana, as he is popularly known, described Ndou as a very talented young man who had a bright future ahead of him. “My heart is torn apart. I was with him recently where we were discussing busi ness issues. We had many things planned for our entertainment business. His death is a great loss, not only to his family but the whole entertainment scene,” he said.

Late Vhakoma Vho-Mukwevho was a true servant of the people

Vhamusanda Vho-Shandu kani Malise, the traditional leader of Domboni village outside Musina, expressed his shock over the death of Vhakoma Vho-Tshitereke Piet Mukwevho.

Mukwevho passed away at the age of 77 at his home last Friday (21 October). He had suffered from health problems over the past few months.

Vhamusanda Vho-Malise said Mukwevho’s death was weighing heavily on him. “He was my right hand. I tasked him with everything concern ing the running of my village, and he did it with exception. He would travel to all govern ment offices, raising service delivery issues on behalf of my village, and report back to me and my council accordingly. We would also delegate him to attend meetings of the local

municipality, where he raised issues with the politicians.

Most of the issues he raised have been resolved and my people are now getting the de sired services because of him. I cannot imagine how life will be without him in our village. Death has robbed us of a hard worker whose contributions to community development will live with us forever,” he said.

The deceased’s son, Phalan ndwa Mukwevho, confirmed his father’s death. “It is indeed true that my father is no more. Although he was not feeling well for some time, his death came as a surprise. We were hopeful that he would recover and continue working for the local community that he loved so dearly. His death is very painful to us. He raised us with much love and proper guidance. Our family and the whole village have lost a pillar of strength. He was loved by many. We will remember all the good things he did for us and the community as a whole while he was still alive.”

Vhakoma Vho- Mukwevho is survived by his two wives, Vho-Nyamuoki and VhoDorah, 12 children and 33 grandchildren. He will be laid to rest this Saturday (29 Oc tober) at Folovhodwe village, after a formal programme, which will start at Domboni village at 05:00.

Large amount of expired food destroyed in Musina

Musina News

A large amount of food past its expiration date was destroyed by the Environ mental Health division of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) and law-enforcement officials from Musina Munic ipality after being confiscated from various shops in Musina last week during a sting operation.

According to the VDM’s health inspector, Mr Peter Mugwena, they found expired food that was still on shelves and sold to unsuspecting customers. This was during a routine inspection. “The un announced inspection yielded positive results as we managed to confiscate the expired food and issue the shop owners with fines. We had to pitch up unannounced because we knew

that if we warned shop owners that we were coming, some of them would have hidden the expired food and put them back on their shelves as soon as we left their shops,” he said.

Mugwena warned shop owners who sell food past its expiration date that law-en forcement officers would not have mercy on them. “Selling expired food is dangerous and can kill people, as expired food might be contaminated. It is a serious infringement of human rights, and everyone has the right to healthy food. We will not tolerate this, and we are even prepared to revoke the trading licenses for repeating offenders.”

He encouraged community members to report shop owners who sell expired food. “We cannot win this war alone, and we need the community to help us. If we all work together, it

will be easier for us to control it, thereby building a safe and productive community who is supplied with healthy food,” he said.

Hendrik Maseko, a superin tendent at the Musina Munici pality, who was also part of the operation, said he was happy to contribute to the eradication of expired food from the shelves.

“Our people deserve to be treat ed with dignity, and they have the right to buy healthy food. We will continue to enforce the law, until all expired food is re moved from shelves around the entire Musina area,” he said.

Besides confiscating and destroying expired food, the team also dismantled illegal makeshift structures along the N1 road and destroyed part of a vegetable garden that was being watered with raw sewage spills, instead of clean water.

Bones found deep in the mountain believed to be those of missing man

The remains believed to be those of a man from Lambani village, who went missing in January this year, were discovered in the Tshaulu Lwapambe mountains, out side Thohoyandou, on Friday, 14 October.

The bones were discovered by cattle herders at the top of the mountain, far from the village, and positively identified as those of Ntshavhiseni Khom olo (66).

Khomolo lived alone, but his family cooked for him, making sure he had something to eat every day. His niece, Ms Thetshi Khomola, said her uncle, who was home bound by an injured leg, went missing on 8 January and was never seen again. “The girl who used to bring him food did not find him on three consecutive days, and we began to worry as we knew he could not walk well. We searched everywhere, with no

luck. We reported him missing to the police and, with the help of the community and the po lice and their dogs, searched ev erywhere, but he was nowhere to be found. We gave up the search after three months but still hoped he would be found alive,” she said.

“When the family was noti fied, we went with the police and positively identified his bones through a piece of iron that supported his leg. His brown jacket and his keys were placed on a rock,” she said.

Thetshi said they had no doubt that he had been ritually murdered. “It would have been impossible for him to get to the top of the mountain by himself with his weak leg. Someone must have carried him up there. We need to know what had happened to him. Some body must explain this to us,” she said.

Mr Nkhetheni Lambani of the royal council said the issue of people disappearing, just

to be found dead later, was becoming a great concern for them all. “This is not the first such incident. A few years ago, Nkhangweni Disco Ndou also went missing and was later found dead. We really hope that the police will do their work and find the people responsible for this,” he said.

Khashane makes a good living with her clay pots

International Rhumba megastar Joseph Mbiza, or Zozo as music lovers know him, told his Vhembe fans not to mind the rumours about his quitting the music business and reassured them that he is still doing his thing just like he used to.

Zozo has 17 albums under his belt and four others under the name ‘Mubvakule’ that he has accumulated over the years.

Recently, the musician performed before a steady crowd during a function held at Ngovhela, outside Thohoyandou, in honour of Ms Virginia Tshivhase on her 70th birthday, where Zozo performed all his greatest hits, such as the massively popular song, Ele Wanga Guests at the function had the privilege to be the

first to see him perform some of the tracks from his upcoming new album, Thavha, which is scheduled to be released before Christmas this year.

Zozo’s electric performance had his audience eating from his hand and hanging onto every note he sang. “There are rumours out there that I quit the music industry,” he told his audience. “Do I look like someone who is out of the game?” which was followed by a big “NO” from his ecstatic fans. “I am still around, and when you hear someone spread these lies again, please tell them that the best is still to come, and soon,” he continued, which caused another excited outcry from the audience.

He has several pre-festive live shows lined up to take his fans back down memory lane and also to promote his new album. “The album is very hot, and I know you will love it. My music is not just empty lyrics. Mine tells a story and entertains the listener. Each word is felt along the beat,” he said.

Zozo’s music can be accessed on most digital platforms. For bookings, he can be contacted on 072 786

Ms Sethina Khashane from the rural Mukondeni village fights poverty and unemployment by making pots of clay and selling them to the communities.

Khashane started doing pottery back in 1990, and today, she is still a full-time ceramist. But things had not been easy at the start. “I used to exchange some of my pottery products for mealies, so that I could also eat. Money was not important then, but that was a long time ago,” she said.

Khashane has dedicated her life to pottery. To this day, she still digs the clay from the riverbanks and mountainside herself.

“At one point, I realised that I had to share some of my expertise in pottery with the other women in the village, and that is what I still do. Over the years, many people from other villages have visited me to learn how to make clay pots, and I taught them free of charge.”

Her clay products are sold for between R50 and R1 800, and her customers consist of locals from around Limpopo and Gauteng.

She says that, by making her ceramic wares, she can

There is a new kid on the block in the arts industry

Seasoned stage actors, drama writers and producers must fasten their seatbelts as a new kid on the block is threatening to take their places in the entertainment world. Tough-talking and experienced actor Vhulenda Neluonde, known in the entertainment industry as Mr Voice, has opened an arts school called Mutsheto Productions at Khubvi village.

Neluonde has produced actors in the mould of Dz-

uvha Mphaphuli from Univen FM, and one of the up-andcoming radio and television actors, Ntlonze Awanda, who played in a Tshivenda short drama called Ma Mafia, which was aired on SABC 1 last month. She played the role of Phophi.

In an exclusive interview with Neluonde on Sunday morning (23rd), he said that since 2018 he had also been teaching at Silemale Secondary School. “I also write, play and produce radio dramas. Recently, I played as Lai lai in a drama Tsembe Tsembe on Phalaphala FM,”

He added that he had worked with experienced drama producers such as the legendary Lufuno Mutele, who has written and produced many television dramas in this country. “I learnt a lot from

Mr Mutele when it comes to script writing,” he said.

One of his students, Ntlonze Awanda, thanked Neluonde for helping her to be where she is today. “I joined his first group, Tshedza Productions, way back in 2015. I have been working with him since then. I was also one of the first actors to follow him to Mutsheto Productions. We used to compete with other community drama groups, and that has strengthened my passion and love for acting,” she said.

Neluonde also organises beauty contests all around the Vhembe District, but he says the problem they have at the moment is a lack of sponsorship.

“It is very hard to work in this industry. You need a lot of resources to manage an art school. You need a hall, a car to transport actors from one place to another for practises and performances, but people are not interested in investing in the art industry. Even the local municipalities in our district are not helping us either. But when our ladies win beauty contests, they fight to welcome them home as if they helped them from the beginning,” he added.

Those who are aspiring to be future actors and those who would like to partner with him can contact him at 072 807 2399.

pay for her children to study further at tertiary institutions after school. “This trade takes care of us. Life has changed for the better for me because of the money I get from selling my cooking pots, ceramics and flower bowls,” says Khashane. “It is better than to just stay at home and do nothing. Without work these days, life is tough.”

Khashane is keen to help youths who want to learn more about pottery. “Pottery is a traditional Venda craft dating back many centuries,” she said.

Those interested in learning this trade can contact Khashane on 076 873 5771.

#EM Boy-SA releases hip new single

Local bolo house and amapiano musician Mutshidzi Chauke has released a single called Murena Wanga.

Chauke, who is known as #EM Boy-SA in music circles, started singing with local friends in 2015. “I have always wanted to be a musician since I was very young. I wrote and composed all the songs on my album, which will be released next year. This single was recorded first because of a lack of funds, otherwise I would have recorded the whole album at once,” he said.

The track was recorded at Lawfam Studio in Makonde village and produced by the Netshituni brothers, Zwanga and Shudufhadzo.

He is appealing to the local business community or a Good Samaritan to help him get his full album recorded. “It would mean a lot to me. It hurts when you know you have talent to make it in the music world but fail to record because of financial strains,” he said.

Chauke can be reached on 072 726 7273.

Own platform for Musina’s art and culture practitioners

Entertainment

The Musina Arts and Culture Council was launched on Friday, 21 October, at the Nancefield Multipurpose Centre, giving the different types of artists within all 12 of Musina’s wards a recognised platform to voice matters related to arts and culture.

Mr Vincent Netshivhodza from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture said that having a recognised structure to coordinate all arts and culture activities in Musina was important. “Government and various partners have developed many programmes to benefit arts and culture practitioners, but it becomes a problem when these people are not united. Now that we have a recognised structure in Musina, it would be easier to manage, as we now

know whom to contact regarding arts and culture activities.”

The newly elected chairperson of the Musina Arts and Culture Council, Mulondo Ramanuwa, said his immediate task would be to unite Musina’s artists. “There is no doubt that Musina has talented arts and culture practitioners who can compete with the best worldwide. Our duty is to unite these people and give them a platform to realise their potential.”

He thanked arts and culture practitioners for having trust in him and the rest of the committee. “We are here to serve the interests of the people, and we can only achieve all our goals through teamwork. We will take the arts and culture fraternity to another level,” he said.

Ramanuwa’s sentiments were echoed by the newly

elected secretary, Sedzani Stanley Sigebe, better known as Pro Heed in the entertainment industry. Sigebe, who is the founder of the Pro Heed Agency, a television casting agency, said this was the best platform to uplift artists from Musina. “Over the years, I have created national and international opportunities for many role models. Now is the time to promote my own artists here in Musina,” he said.

The full committee is as follows: Mulondo Ramanuwa (chairperson), Benjamin Mashila (deputy chairperson), Stanley Sigebe (secretary), Francinah Chauke (deputy secretary), Humbulani Munyai (treasurer), Gloria Chauke, Milina Mutele, Murendeni Tshilande, Kganetjo Moyo and Mbavhalelo Phuravhathu (additional members).

LP Midalo’s album shows growth and improvement

Lidzebe Midalo from Maniini, also known as LP Midalo, has given music lovers plenty to look forward to this summer with the release of his full debut studio album, titled Thohoyandou Love II

For all groove seekers, young or not that young anymore, this musical treasure, which was released two weeks ago, is a must-listen

The album is packed with 14 songs, each one presented in LP Midalo’s own unique style. “I’m working on creating a distinct sound of my own, and so far, the fans are loving the album,” he said.

The album features local artists such as Pushie Da

Tall, T Cole Matoro, Stambo Deejay and many more. “I talk about love of humanity, love of a partner (as in track four, named Thailand), and love for the wonderful land that Mwali (God) has given us, and all of us to start enjoying our freedom,” he said.

The 25-year-old began his musical career as a songwriter in 2008 and has since recorded several singles, three mixtapes, and two EPs. He always strives to exceed his audiences’ wildest expectations by making each one of his performances great. “I started creating music at a young age, and being around producers and rappers influenced me a lot. After learning how to rap, I began recording my own beats,

which earned me many fans,” he explained.

The fast-rising artist used to sing hip-hop and VenRap music. However, two years ago, he introduced his own, personalised genre termed Venda Beats, which is a combination of Afro beats, traditional Venda and New Age sounds. “I wanted to create something unheard of - an authentic sound we can call our own, because I can’t be making hip-hop music in Africa and expect to outshine a rapper from the United States,” he said.

Thohoyandou Love II is available on all online music stores, including YouTube and Spotify. For bookings, contact 082 710 6418 or 079 340 4951 (WhatsApp)

Tshikombeni releases her debut anthology for her 30th birthday

Makana Eracia Tshikombeni, a social worker from Maramanzhi outside Thohoyandou, loves to spend her free time writing poems. Her newly released anthology of poems, called Zwavhutshilo, is the culmination of her own life journey. The collection is a reflection of not just the hardships and pain one might experience in life, but also the happiness and love one encounters.

Tshikombeni is a BA honours student at UNISA. She says,

“When I started writing this book in 2016, I didn’t plan on when I would finish it and get it published, but this year I decided that it would make the perfect gift to myself for my 30th birthday.”

“My poems address all kinds of issues; the kind that either make you feel happy or very uncomfortable. It talks about societal expectations and norms in culture that are often used to cover up certain types of abuse, like children being forced to grow up and get

married before they are really mature enough.”

She says that writing has become an integral part of her life and that she wants to use this passion she has for it to contribute towards the development of the Tshivenda language and to communicate social issues to others. “I believe there are people out there who need to hear what I have to say. We all have different purposes in life; therefore, this book is an ideal read for everyone,” Tshikombeni adds.

Self-taught artist, Kenny Lekgwareni, grabs attention of hip-hop fans with impressive art

As a zealous admirer of hiphop and its culture, Kenny Lekgwareng of Nwamatatani village reflects ghetto hiphop fashion in his artwork, which continues to draw more music enthusiasts.

Kenny, a self-taught artist, is impacting the hip-hop art world with the colourful pictures he paints on clothes and shoes. With his distinct style of pen and pencil paintings on clothes and shoes, his work continues to attract more hiphop and streetwear fans.

“My customers adore my work, and I love drawing faces more than anything else as they show realism,” he said. He also hopes that he will soon get more recognition for his unique pieces. “I’m aiming to reach the level where I will send my artwork to art galleries nationally and internationally,” he said.

Known by his clothing brand K-Customs, Kenny’s love of art and the hip-hop genre prompt-

ed him to start making his own music too. Thus far, he has released one track named Phanda ma nigga, and he is also anticipating releasing his first EP in December.

He was inspired by American hip-hop artists such as Eminem and Joyner Lucas, whom he grew up listening to. According to him, witnessing hip-hop fashion in art is fascinating. Many individuals around his area were drawn to his work after witnessing an interpretation of hip-hop in a brush stroke or photograph.

“My art brand is becoming popular, and I appreciate my customers who

Exploring ways to unearth potential of natural medicines

The African Traditional and Natural Product Medicine Conference, hosted by the University of Limpopo, was held at the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort outside Polokwane from 19 to 21 October, and Phalaphala FM was there to broadcast the event live, with radio presenter Tshimangadzo Murovhi behind the microphone.

The central theme of the conference was “Be Brave. Embrace African Traditional Medicines”. Sub-themes covered at the conference included Communicable Diseases (Covid-19, TB, HIV), Non-communicable Diseases (cancer, diabetes, hypertension), Cannabis in African Traditional Medicines, Women’s Health and Wellness, and Mental Health and Well-being.

The purpose of the event was to bring researchers from different niche areas of science, traditional healers and government officials under one roof to strengthen and promote South Africa and Africa’s indigenous knowledge systems. Special focus was set on traditional medicines and how South Africa can benefit from this knowledge. Researchers from different institutions and areas of expertise presented their latest work on traditional-medicine research, the challenges faced and their future plan of action.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba said students were being trained in Cuba and facilities opened in other countries to strengthen the use of traditional medicines in health departments. She said this would also help grow the economy.

“There’s consistency in terms of our department ensuring that we engage with traditional practitioners. South Africa is a regulated country. We make sure traditional health practitioners look among themselves to identify those who are mischievous and malicious and guilty of wrong practices. We’ve got doctors in Cuba who are advanced in integrating both western and traditional medicine,” she said.

always share my exceptional work on their social-media platforms. I also used to draw tattoos, but, unfortunately, my machines were destroyed when the house I used to live in burnt down,” he said. He explained how he began his artistic adventure 13 years ago and how he honed his talent by watching YouTube videos. “I began experimenting with pencils and vivid colours in a drawing book while I was in Grade 2. As time went by, I then started watching YouTube videos to learn some skills and techniques,” he said.

Musina’s cemetery now a safer place for the mourning families

Hamilton Baloyi buried his mother in the Nancefield cemetery in Musina in August of 2009. Like many other families who had bur ied their loved ones there since the eighties, Baloyi was always worried about the safety of their graves. This concern, however, has been addressed since the Musina Local Municipal ity kick-started the R8.5 million project to upgrade and develop the Nancefield cemetery.

Musina Mayor Nkhanedze ni Godfrey Mawela said the project came into being after community members shared their input on the municipal ity’s integrated development plan (IDP). “We work on the mandate of the people and

they requested that we add this project to develop the cemetery. The project includes the erection of a palisade fence around the cemetery, the development of access roads and parking spaces, sewer and water reticulation, and ablution facilities.”

He said the project was expected to be completed at the end of October this year.

“Besides securing our ceme tery, the four-month project has also provided temporary work for 20 local community members who were previously unemployed. This will also help with skills transfer, so these workers might be able to create their own jobs after the project is completed.”

He urged community members to take good care of the facility once they are done with the project. “Although we deploy security at most

municipal properties, the public should develop a sense of ownership thereof. We urge the public to refrain from vandalising any property as it affects service delivery as well. The money that has to be used to repair vandalised proper ties can be used for something else for the benefit of the community,” Mawela said.

Elisa Makwasha, whose elder sister was also buried at the Nancefield cemetery in 2020, said she was always worried about the safety of her sister’s gravesite. “We are happy that the municipality has answered our prayers, because the place was becom ing dangerous due to the fact that access was not controlled. Now that we will have only one entrance and a palisade fence, things will be better going forward.”

Feast fit for a king as Mailausumbwa Tshivhase celebrates his 60th

The Tshivhase Kingdom was cloaked in a festive shroud for three whole days as commu nities gathered to celebrate Tshivhase Day, which was combined with Mailausum bwa Kennedy Tshivhase’s 60th birthday.

The celebrations kicked off with a gala dinner for selected guests, held at the Kalahari Wa terfront at Nandoni Dam, on Friday, 7 October, where those who contributed to the dawn of democracy were honoured with the esteemed Rasimphi Award.

On Saturday (8 October), the feasting continued at the Prince Thikhathali Stadium in Tshikombani, where the whole

Tshivhase community came together. Different cultural and music groups entertained the guests, and Mailausumbwa Tshivhase stole the show again with his expert tshikona dance moves. Instead of receiv ing gifts from his subjects, Tshivhase donated ten wheel chairs to disabled community members.

On Sunday (9 October), a big church service for all churches under the umbrella of The Cross and The Crown was held at the Tshivhase Nature Reserve at Thathe Vondo. The highlight of the service was a special prayer done for Tshivhase and all the Grade 12 learners who are to start with their examinations.

Addressing the guests,

Tshivhase urged all stakehold ers in his area to be united in the fight against crime and other community ills. “Let us work together for peace in this area. Let us help our youth, who are overwhelmed by drugs and other social ills. Tradition al leaders, the church and all other stakeholders should lead this campaign, and there shall be peace and prosperity in our area,” he said.

The celebrations were also attended by government officials, traditional leaders, the chairperson of the Vhembe ANC region, the Tshivhase Traditional Council, Contralesa business fraternity, faith-based leaders and the provincial lead ership of the ANC.

Business Partnership

Chicken production in Limpopo got a serious boost on 20 October with the official opening of the North roost Hatchery outside Louis Trich ardt. A modern new facility that can produce 208 000 quality day-old chicks per week, Northroost is a joint venture between local Makha do entrepreneur Clive Tigere of KC Hatchery, Country Bird Holdings (CBH) and Bushvalley Chicken.

“This is a game changer for broiler farmers in Limpopo who have never before had access to such consistent volumes of high-quality day-old chicks,” said Tigere at the opening. “The local economy will benefit, more jobs can be created, and the informal market can grow.”

CBH CEO Brendon de Boer ex plains the partnership: “CBH supplies the fertilised Arbor Acre eggs, Clive oversees the hatching process, and Bushvalley takes a significant percent age of the day-old chicks.” He adds that the modern new facility was built and kitted out with an investment of R56 million. “Clive qualified for an IDC grant and we had started the application process over a year ago, but government funding always takes time and we didn’t want to delay. So, between CBH and Bushvalley we de cided to find the bridge financing, so that we could get going with construc tion.” Tigere’s grant eventually came through earlier this month.

Northroost’s first batch of fer tilised eggs was set on 24 August and hatched on 14 September, setting in motion a cycle in which two batches a week are hatched, several days apart. So far, Tigere has maintained an ex cellent hatch ratio of over 90%, and by the grand opening on 20 October, the

tally stood at more than a million dayold chicks that had been distributed into the broiler market of Limpopo.

The joint venture was the happy re sult of a meeting five years ago, when Tigere had approached the South Af rican Poultry Association for help with a research project. Tigere had given up a corporate job at McKinsey’s to focus on his fledgling poultry business back home in Makhado. He had noted the high incidence of dumped chicken available in Limpopo and the negative effect it had been having on the infor mal poultry industry, with local farm ers not being able to compete with the dumped imports that were flooding the market. He was introduced to the CEO of Country Bird Holdings, who, in turn, contacted his colleagues at Tzaneen-based Bushvalley to intro duce them to the young entrepreneur in their area.

Finding enough fertilised eggs of re liable quality was a constant battle for Tigere, and when CBH offered to sup ply as many as he needed, he jumped at the chance. He was not deterred by the fact that he had to collect the eggs in Lichtenburg in the North West, and made the 16-hour round trip from Louis Trichardt every week.

“This steady supply of high-qual ity eggs completely changed our business,” says Tigere. “Having better eggs meant a more predictable, higher hatch rate, and now KC Hatchery could commit to clients with a steady supply of chicks that allowed them to have a business all year round.”

By 2020, KC Hatchery was selling around 19 000 day-old chicks a week, and Tigere had started discussing a more formal arrangement with CBH and Bushvalley. De Boer had been looking around for opportunities to further the company’s transformation

agenda in line with the poultry mas terplan, and KC Hatchery was ticking all the boxes. The joint venture was eventually formalised.

“To transform the poultry industry as the masterplan has called for, we believe that more projects such as this one are needed, which came together because there was collaboration be tween government, integrated produc ers and local entrepreneurial talent,” says De Boer. “There is a challenge in finding those solid projects with real potential in outlying areas, but they are out there, and working with the IDC to identify them is a way to open new markets and grow the industry. I hope we can find more solid projects such as Northroost, all along the poultry value chain - from hatcheries to processing - where local business people with potential can be upskilled and supported.”

The new hatchery was constructed with expansion in mind, and the infrastructure will easily be adapted in future to double its current capacity. State-ofthe-art hatchery equip ment was imported, water reservoirs were built and generators installed to keep the systems going in the event of power out ages. “Everything in the facility speaks of quality, and global standards are adhered to,” says Tigere, who has been working round the clock since Northroost came online to ensure he has buy ers for every one of the approximately 100 000 chicks that are hatched every week. “It has been

scary at times, especially when a regular client suddenly cuts their order by half and you wonder where to [go] with the extra 10 000 chicks! But we’re finding our groove with these new, bigger volumes, and fortunately Bushvalley has the capacity to take extra chicks if we have a crisis!”

For Tzaneen-based Bushvalley, the proximity to Northroost adds a factor of convenience , and enables them to provide daily administrative and other support to Tigere. CEO Ian Preece says, “Northroost ticks all the boxes for us – it is a good business opportunity, it allows us to contribute to industry transformation, and it fills a real gap for poultry producers of all sizes in Limpopo. Even as an inte grated producer with more resources, we benefit from having a consistent supply of high-quality day-old chicks on our doorstep.”

For Tigere and his local farmer

clients, Northroost represents a bright new future. “Farmers from Limpopo can now raise high-quality chicks efficiently, without the high transport costs that are generally incurred when bringing chicks in from hundreds of kilometres away,” he says. “As their costs go down, they can become more competitive, grow their businesses, and create more jobs, and we will see this positive response circling further and further.

“The informal poultry industry tends to fly under the radar, but it represents so much opportunity for growth and wealth creation in many areas of the country where there are few other job opportunities. I hope that our example can serve as a model that government could apply to make this happen for other entrepreneurs too, so that transformation can hap pen organically,” says Tigere. African Farmers’ Association conveys special honour to Thohoyandou’s Tshianeo Mathidi

Mr Tshianeo Mathidi, one of the founding fathers of the African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA), was honoured for his valuable contributions in establishing the home of African farmers during AFASA’s annual general meeting and 10-year anniversary celebration. The conference took place at the International Conference Centre in Durban from 16 to 18 October.

Mathidi served two three-

year terms with AFASA. He started as the organisation’s president in Limpopo and was later elected as the founding national chairperson. When his term ended, he was asked to stay on as board member. He finally resigned in March this year, after two of his resignation letters were rejected by the board.

Mathidi, who is a wellknown potato farmer in the Thohoyandou area, was greatly humbled by the honour bestowed on him. “This is humbling and

fulfilling. It was by God’s grace that I found myself serving the farmers, so that their farming enterprises can be sustainable through sharing information without reservations,” he said.

Mathidi served on many committees, and boards and in other capacities, both provincially and nationally, and is presently a director at Potato South Africa. “I have dedicated much of my time to this cause; now it is time for me to start dedicating some time to my own farming business. The new

leadership must continue to improve farmers’ lives. I would not have been able to serve my country so well, had it not been for the support I got from my family and the farming community. Above all, I thank God for his grace and mercy in my life,” he said.

During the conference, AFASA also honoured its late president, Dr Vuyo Mahlati, by launching the annual Dr Vuyo Mahlati Awards, which are given to individuals or entities who embody what Mahlati stood for.

Young farmer helps with food security

By Victor Mukwevho Thuso Mbedzi from the village of Thenzheni is proud to be doing his bit in contributing to food security in his area. The young farmer was lucky to find a one-hectare piece of land to rent, where he started planting a variety of vegetables.

Mbedzi (24) says when he was a young boy, his mother always taught him that, if he wants to make his own money in this life, he has to work the land. He says they used to work in a nearby field where they produced enough food for the family, while

the rest was sold. “When I heard about the World Health Organization (WHO)’s call on the radio last year, advising people to start their own farming enterprises to ease the burden of food security, I contacted one of the community leaders and asked if I could rent this piece of land because there is a river nearby,” he says.

Today, he sells his vegetables to hawkers at the local townships and the Thohoyandou CBD, and has even hired two people to work for him on a full-time basis. He says he would like to get a bigger place to farm, but that subsistence farmers such as he do not have the financial

muscle to buy the kind of farming equipment to compete with the big farmers.

“If I can get a generator, water pipes and manure, I can support the whole Vhembe District with vegetables in no time. I have about 15 hectares on the other side of the mountain, but there is no river nearby. If the government and business community can help me with water pipes and a generator, so that I can pump water, I can produce a lot more and also employ more people,” he said.

If anyone would like to help Mbedzi, call him on 072 636 7939.

Former security guard beats all the odds and gets his masters’ degree

Richard Hafani’s journey in life has not been a bed of roses.

A year after he completed his matric at Ratshikwekwete Secondary School in Vuwani in 1995, he registered for a diploma in human-resource (HR) management at a college in Gauteng, but then he had to drop out because of financial constraints. Yet, despite the challenges he met on his way, he continued to hold on to his dream of finishing his education.

In 1998, he started working as a security guard, and in 2002, decided to go back and finish his national diploma in HR management through UNISA. This he did while he continued to work as a security guard.

“I would report for duty at 06:00 in the morning, and when I was due for exams, beg my supervisor to release me, so I could go and write. I would put on a jacket over my uniform, take a taxi to the exam centre, and when I had finished writing, go back to work,” he said. And so he pushed

through, working and studying towards his goal, one day at a time.

In 2008, he obtained his diploma in human-resource management, followed by a national diploma in security-risk management in 2012 and a BTech degree in 2016.

Today, at 46, Hafani feels that his dream is finally becoming a reality as he looks at his latest achievement: a master’s degree in security and risk management, obtained from UNISA. “Better late than never,” he laughs. “My master’s research proposal was accepted in 2018. I completed my dissertation in March this year and graduated in September.”

He now works as a security manager for one of the biggest government parastatals. But he is far from done. His plan for the future is to study for his PhD and also assist other security officers to reach their dreams.

“I would like to express my thanks to my lovely wife, Mpho, and my kids for their unwavering support during my years of studying,” Hafani said. “The best is yet to come.”

Communities must join hands with police and churches in fighting crime

“The police alone cannot fight crime. But with the interven tion of churches, traditional leaders and communities, we can win this fight against crime,” said Thohoyandou SAPS’s station commander, Brig Leshoaneng Mantjane. He spoke on behalf of the Limpopo provincial com missioner, Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe, on Sunday, 16 Octo ber, when hundreds of people gathered at the Thohoyandou Lutheran Church Centre to celebrate Provincial Police Sunday of Prayer, under the theme “Striving and Pray ing Together for a Peaceful Society”.

Mantjane said that they needed to visit and sit and talk with the various church

leaders, traditional leaders and community members around the area about ways to end crime. “The Vhembe District in Limpopo is facing a serious challenge regarding crime, such as gender-based violence, murder, and woman and chil dren abuse. The Thohoyandou Police Station was rated the worst according to statistics on gender-based violence, and we want to end this scourge, but we need the churches to pray for us,” he said. “We must fight crime head-on as soon as it happens. We are saying the Thohoyandou area doesn’t belong to criminals.”

Mantjane thanked the police band and choir, and men and women in blue for making the day a success.

Dean Joseph Ramalida of the Thohoyandou Lutheran

Church said he was excited that the provincial police in Lim popo had chosen his church to celebrate Provincial Police Sunday of Prayer and promised that his church would pray for the police and communities, so that peace was restored in their society.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, one of the traditional leaders of the Vhavenda people, said that they, as the custodians of the people, were worried about the high crime rate in their com munities. “We cannot continue to look on from the side-line while criminals are taking over our communities. We need to intervene and help put a stop to it. We urge the communities to join hands with the police and various churches in fighting to make our communities safe again,” he said.

Police should not interfere with the work of NPOs running VEPs

Ms Fiona Nicholson, co-founder of the Thohoyan dou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) and mentor at the Songozwi Victim Empowerment Programme (SVEP), says the police do not seem to understand the role they are supposed to play in NPOs regarding victims of gen der-based violence.

“The police should only be allowed to bring victims to the VEPs, not try to run these NPOs because, in the instance where the police are implicat ed in a GBV case - say they did not assist a victim when she tried to lay a complaint - how can the NPO hold the police accountable for that if they (the police) are also [active] on the NPO’s board?” she argues.

Advocate Bernadine Bachar, director of the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children and executive member of the National Shel ter Movement of South Africa (NSMSA), agrees that the role of the police is to support and assist GBV survivors, and not

to interfere with the running of the VEPs.

According to Nicholson, many non-profit VEPs in Vhembe are afraid to speak out about the police’s involve ment in the running of VEPs because they fear backlash from the police. They blame the SAPS in part for the collapse of the SVEP after the Makhado SAPS station com mander suspended the SVEP’s services, which was run from the police’s house in Breda Street in Louis Trichardt, in 2019.

But Sgt Tshifhiwa Irene Radzilani of the Makhado Police Station says the reason why the SVEP stopped operat ing was because of maladmin istration within the NPO.

That a dire need exists for more non-profit victim-em powerment programmes that provide shelter to victims is indisputable. In Vhembe, the biggest problem seems to lie with late payments from the Department of Social Devel opment. From 19-20 October, a GBV Shelter Indaba was held in Johannesburg. The Indaba was attended by the Department of Social De

velopment, NSMSA, former Public Prosecutor Prof Thuli Madonsela and other stake holders, who resolved to see to it that an adequate, stan dardised three-year national funding model is established.

The police in Louis Trichardt say that, if a need for a shelter for victims of gender-based violence in or around Louis Trichardt exists, such victims may be sent to any of the non-profit VEP organisations, such as the Thohoyandou VEP or the Tshilwavhusiku VEP.

The trial of the four suspects arrested in connection with the murder of well-known Thohoyandou businessman Azwifaneli Mudau on Valen tine’s Day in 2019 started in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou on Monday, 24 October.

Mudau was shot and killed at the gate of his house on 14 Feb ruary 2019 after his own wife, Ntanganedzeni Winnie Nema

ranzhe (34), had allegedly hired hitmen to murder him.

Four suspects were arrested in connection with the murder and a case of conspiracy to commit murder was opened against Nemaranzhe and her three co-accused, Tshivhang waho Mudau (46), Tshililo Madega (31) and Takalani Nemutandani (33). Charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances were added.

Judge Legodi Phatudi of the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou told the state

prosecutors and Advocate Ntsako Hlongwane, the legal representative of Mudau and Madega, that the case was of public interest and likely to attract a large audience.

The case was postponed to 2 November 2022, for the court to try to establish if a conflict of interest exists in the testimonies the accused had submitted. A new date for the trial will be announced when they appear then. The accused remain in custody.

Tournament to honour the legends

Preparations are at an advanced stage to stage a soccer tournament aimed at honouring local football leg ends. According to one of the organisers of the tournament, Mr Tshisamphiri Madima, the tournament will be staged at the CTM Stadium in Tho hoyandou next Saturday (5 November).

The fallen legends who will be remembered during the tournament are Baldwin Mahlale, Alushavhiwi “Jomo” Mamphasa, Tshilidzi “Poison” Ndevana and Faranani “Ozo” Makhado.

Mahlale was a player for Thohoyandou Masters FC at the time of his death. Jomo Mamphasa was the founder

and a player of Wesifa Masters until he met his untimely death. Ndevana will be remem bered for his role as a pillar of strength during his time as a player for Tshifudi Masters FC. Makhado was a playmaker for Begwa Masters FC at the time of his death.

Mr Madima said that the toss to determine the teams that will meet in the first semi-final would be conducted on the morning of the tournament. The first semi-final is sched uled to start at 10:00, while the second one is expected to kick-off at 12:00. The final is scheduled to start at 15:30.

Mr Madima said that the participating teams would each be given a soccer kit. Thabelo Funeral Embassy, Vhutsila Bookshop and Mathacs Civils

are some of the companies that will sponsor the tournament.

Mikhado continue to donate points

Mpheni Home Defenders beat Mikhado FC 2-0 in their Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe league match that was played at the Rabali Stadium on Friday.

Mikhado was lucky not to

concede half a dozen goals during the first half as they were out of touch in all depart ments. Realising that they were unable to match Defenders, Mikhado started to display rough skills. They did not get far with this strategy as referee Olani Kwinda warned one of

them, Sibusiso Khambale, with a card in the ninth minute.

Mikhado should have been the first to find the net. Their diminutive striker, Thembelani Ntanzi, was unfortunate to see his volley go a little wide. Thabelo Tshikweta scored De fenders’ opening goal, following a beautiful pass from Lucky Buasi in the 44th minute.

Defenders continued to play entertaining football from behind throughout the game, but their strikers fum bled at the goal finish.

Thabelo Tshikweta completed his brace when he scored his team’s second goal after some delight ful moves with Gift Nemutandani.

Junior Thabwana, who was a thorn in the flesh of the defence of Defenders, could have decreased the deficit. He received a beautiful pass from Fisokuhle Thusi but shot wide from outside the box.

Matanda Rockers crush Panthers

Matanda Rockers scored a 4-2 victory over Raliphaswa Black Panthers during an MMK Administrators league clash played at the Matanda grounds on Sunday.

The game was lukewarm in the first 5 minutes while the teams were still studying each other. Panthers had them selves to blame for the defeat as they could have sealed the game within 30 minutes. Their strikers let them down on countless occasions, but Rockers’ keeper, Thendo Tshu sa, also denied them obvious goals.

The first goal came after Aluwani Rambau of Panthers was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Rambau made no mistake and scored. Their celebration was cut short when Rockers equalised through Vhutshilo Netshivhazwaulu.

Rockers took the lead in the 38th minute. Mbulaheni Muf hadi went loose from the right corner and unleashed a pow erful ground cutter from the edge of the box. The keeper of Panthers watched help

lessly as the ball hit the back of the net. Rockers were awarded a free kick just outside the box three minutes later. Vhutshilo Netshivhazwaulu blasted in a rocket from the set piece.

Panthers scored their second goal via Phumudzo Than gavhuelelo, who gave the ball

the final touch after a scramble within the box. The goal was an insult to the players of Rockers. They retaliated within a short space of time. Elias Ranyaoa tried his luck from outside the box, and the ball hit the wood work and bounced across the goal line.

“This time it is war,” says Muleba

“It will be a killer, and a chiller, and a thriller when I get the gorilla in Manila,” said former world boxing icon Cassius Clay, better known as Muhammad Ali, when promoting his fight against Joe Frazer back in 1975.

Taking a leaf out of Ali’s speech, local boxing trainer John Nemakonde proclaimed: “It will be a thriller in Tzaneen when Raider Muleba meets Kholosa Ndobayeni in the na tional title fight on 13 Novem

ber this year. Muleba is going to avenge her defeat in their first encounter. Now it is payback time. She will consume her [opponent] alive.”

The two female pugilists will be fighting for the South African Female Lightweight title. “She [Ndobayeni] does not stand a chance against us at the moment. This fight is historical because it is the first national female boxing title to be fought in this province. I call on all boxing fans in the Vhem be District to accompany us to collect the title in Tzaneen,”

Nemakonde said.

Meanwhile, after more than two hours’ non-stop training at the Thohoyandou Town Hall on Tuesday morning (25 October), an exhausted Muleba said she could not wait to meet her opponent and prove that she was the best in this division in the country. “I wish the fight was happening right here, right now. I fought her in her backyard and lost on points because of a hometown decision methodology. This is a do-or-die fight for me. In fact, it is war,” she said.

Pastor Beauty is saving the culture

Culture

The young generation should grow up mastering their tra ditions and cultural practices. This is the view of cultural ambassador Pastor Avhasei Beauty Manyatshe of Maniini village near Thohoyandou.

Manyatshe grew up in a very traditional environment at Makonde before she moved to Maniini. She became worried when she realised that Tshiven da cultural practices were starting to disappear more and more every day in many parts around Vhembe.

About six months ago, she decided to start an initiative to train young girls in their culture and traditions. “I thought the best thing was to do something about it, instead of watching my own tradition and culture vanish into thin air.

So, I approached some of the parents here at Maniini, who agreed to release their children after school and during week ends, so that I can train them in these practices. The response I received from the parents was encouraging as they have put their trust in me to look after their children in their absence,” she said.

Manyatshe said she had saved up some money and bought cultural ornaments, such as reed baskets (mifaro), traditional calabashes (zwitem ba), traditional bracelets (malungu) and square fabric attire for girls (maredo, which is plural for shedo). “After just a week, the girls were very good in cultural dances, traditional greetings (u losha) and the correct way of walking while carrying mifaro and zwitemba Interestingly, they showed a

love for their own traditional and cultural practices, and it was easy to train them.”

She said she did not charge any money for the training of the girls. To her, the import ant thing is to promote the Tshivenda culture and tradi tions, while the girls are kept off the streets at the same time.

“One day, I took them along to a local social event where they demonstrated their new skills. The guests at the event were very impressed and they encouraged me not to give up. We then started getting invita tions to attend various events to entertain people. The only thing we need is transportation as we sometimes get invitations from villages that are far from our own village. But we are available, and those who need us can call me directly on 063 780 3132,” she said.

Winners Park, Artists share points

United Artists deposited the first point into their league account after their 1-1 draw against Winners Park FC in their ABC Motsepe League match that was played at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani on Saturday.

United Artists did not show their opponents any respect, despite the fact that they were playing away from home. They created numerous promising moves in the opening minutes of the game, but finding their way through the rock-solid

defence of Winners Park was difficult for them.

Their sharpshooter, Rivon ingo Chauke, was unlucky in the ninth minute. His header missed the target by inches. Chauke’s attempt seemed to be a wakeup call to Winners Park. They regrouped from behind, but their moves were intercept ed each time they crossed the halfway line.

The visitors from Lufule village were the first to blow the trumpet. They were awarded a corner kick in the 29th minute. The corner kick gave rise to a scramble within the box and

the team’s captain, Ramaremisa Mulaudzi, blasted in a rocket.

United Artists could have increased the lead six minutes towards the end of the first half, had Rivoningo Chauke not apparently forgotten his scoring boots at home. Chauke caused an upset when he shot straight to the stranded keeper, two minutes before the break.

Winners Park came back strongly from the half-time break. They were awarded a free kick in the 58th minute.

Ngoako Rapatsa beat the keep er with a half volley from the free kick.

Keep your hands off our young stars, says founder of Thobela FC

Barely a week after Juventus Thobela FC’s ambitious player, Mulisa Liberty Tshidino, bagged five awards during the team’s end-of-year prize-giving ceremony, local and regional football development structures came knocking on the young football star’s door.

The lanky midfielder was named Player of the Season, Most Disciplined and Committed Player, Top Goal Scorer of the Season, Defender of the Season, and received the Chairman’s Award.

But in spite of Tshidino’s growing popu larity, the team’s founder and director, Mr Thulani Nicholas Malusese, better known in football circles as Dolezar, said he was not ready to part with any of the team’s players yet. He said that two months ago, three of their young players had disap peared for three days, only for them to discover that the boys were secretly doing trials for another football academy in Thohoyandou.

“Tshidino is not for sale and he is going nowhere. I started working with these boys when they were still very young, and now that they are starting to show their potential, people want them. None of my boys will be allowed to leave now. Let the boys write their exams in peace without any disturbance. They are still under age. Anyone who needs their services must talk to their parents first before approaching the team,” he said.

“Remember, even if we are not allowed to sell teenagers in the football fraternity,

we have to be compensated for our time and all the experience the boys got from us. You cannot just sit in the corner and wait for us to train them, and then take them away,” he said.

Maindis Ladies did not waste any time in Kwazulu-Natal after their midweek game against Durban Ladies, which was played at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, they drove back to Lim popo to start with their preparations for their Hollywoodbets Super League match against Golden Ladies, which will be played at the

Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

The result of their game against Durban Ladies was not available at the time of our going to print. Should they fail to collect the maximum points against Golden Ladies on Saturday, Ma indis will have only themselves to blame. Golden Ladies are one of the relegation candidates. They are lying in the second-last position on the log standings. The North West side managed to collect only five points from the 24 matches they have played to date.

As for Maindis, they must win the match at all costs to accomplish their mission. According to the team’s head coach, Mr Sipho Mabuza, his mandate is to ensure that the team get counted among the top four at the end of the season.

Mr Mabuza is optimistic that the mandate is still achievable when taking into account the fact that his team are currently lying in the eighth position with 40 points, seven behind the thirdplaced side, University of the Western Cape FC. (The result of Wednesday’s game against Durban Ladies not included).

Bloemfontein Celtic will take on JVW FC at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. The other weekend fixtures are Richmond United vs Durban Ladies, Thunderbirds Ladies vs Coal City Wizards, Tsunami Queens vs City Lads and TUT Ladies vs Vasco da Gama.

The fixtures for the three matches that will be played next Wednesday (5 November) are City Lads vs Vasco da Gama, Coal City Wizards vs JVW FC and UWC vs Richmond United.

Leopards let Amatuks off the hook

Black Leopards are still battling to come to terms with the result of their Motsepe Foundation League match against University of Preto ria FC that was played at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Preto ria last Friday (21). Lidoda duvha were leading 3-0 at one stage, but the final score was 3-3.

When asked why they had failed to defend their 3-0 lead in the last 20 minutes of the game, the team’s head coach, Mr Joel Masutha, revealed that their replacements had done them more harm than good. He stated that they had ef fected two changes by replacing

the strikers with a defender and midfielder while they were leading 3-0 with a view to maintaining the lead, but that was not to be. “The Prophet”, as he is also known, said that the home side were unstoppable after they had effected the two changes, resulting in the latter’s scoring three goals within a short space of time.

Masutha reckoned that his players had lost their fighting spirit after Amatuks had scored their opening goal. Amatuks opened their account via Kamohelo Pheane in the 74th minute. Their second goal was an honour to Lulama Maqoko six minutes thereafter. Nh lanhla Zwane scored the third two minutes before the end of regulation time.

Black Leopards’ opening goal came through Kyiaan Bull four minutes towards the end of the first half. They were awarded a penalty seven minutes into the last half. The team’s scoring machine, Tiklas Thutlwa, made no mistake from the white spot. Matimu Tshabalala was on target with a ground cutter in the 70th minute.

Asked why he had been seated on the team’s technical bench in their game against Amatuks while previously be ing suspended by the club, the former Pretoria Callies mentor said that he had smoked a peace pipe with the chairman of the club, Mr David Thidiela. He stressed the fact that any thing is possible in football.

Giyani Happy Boys shame Munaca

Although they were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute, Giyani Happy Boys still managed to collect the max imum points at the expense of Munaca FC in their ABC Motsepe League on Saturday. Happy Boys won the match, which was played at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani, 2-1.

Happy Boys knocked on the opposition’s door for the first time four minutes into the game. Their killer striker, Sello “Ferrari” Molewa, tried his luck with a half volley from the 20-metre area. The keeper of Munaca, Patrick Motsapi, had to stretch to the limit to palm the ball away for a corner kick.

In the 17th minute, Munaca realised that Saturday was not their day. The team’s captain,

Thabiso Maitsapo, received a neat pass from Ofhani Vele and unleashed aimlessly from close range.

The home side managed to stamp their authority on the game in the 28th minute. They were awarded a free kick in the 30-metre area. The free kick gave rise to a scramble within the box and Blessing Maluleke hooked in the ball.

Happy Boys enjoyed their 1-0 lead until the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Mu naca found the equaliser via Thabiso Maitsapo. He beat the keeper with a ground cutter nine minutes into the last stanza.

Happy Boys played the last 20 minutes of the game with their hands tied behind the backs. Their playmaker, Musa Rikhotso, was given his march ing orders for a second book able offence. Munaca failed to capitalise on the setback as the home side managed to reclaim the lead in the 76th minute. Funeka Mafa beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way with a half volley.

Dipeni FC crush Tswera’s Hot Chilies

Tswera Hot Chilies donated significant league points to Dipeni FC, to whom they lost 0-2 in their Safa Vhembe Re gional League match that was played at the Dipeni Grounds in Sambandou on Sunday.

Dipeni deserved to win the game from the onset. They threw missiles from all angles time after time in the first 15 minutes of the game. They

were let down by their slender striker, Pfariso Makhura, who fumbled at the goal finish twice in a row in the opening minutes.

Makhura made his first attempt in the fourth minute. He received a neat pass from Thompho Mateletele in the 20-metre area but hesitated for far too long before losing possession.

Makhura caused another upset in the ninth minute. This

time around he went loose from the left corner and unleashed a ground cutter from the edge of the box. The ball missed the target by inches.

Hot Chilies took the game to the home side towards the end of the first half. The strikers squandered two clear scoring chances just before the referee blew the half-time whistle. Hot Chilies effected four changes to their starting 11 earlier in the last half. The substitutions proved to be a suicidal move as Dipeni took con trol of the game soon thereafter.

Dipeni took the lead in the 68th minute. Shudufhadzo Mashawana, who came on as a substitute for Thompho Mateletele, was on target with a bicycle kick. Dip eni’s second goal came via Pfariso Makhura later in the game. He gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box.

Nine referees and three teams get suspended amidst bribery allegations

Safa Vhembe suspended nine soccer referees and three teams over an al leged match-fixing scandal involving MMK Administrator league match es.

The secretary of Safa Vhembe, Mr Sam Matodzi, confirmed that the asso ciation had suspended the nine referees and three teams from participating in league activities after allegations of misconduct.

The head of referees in Vhembe, Samuel Maduwa, said that the associa tion was continuing with investigations into other suspected illegal and corrupt activities in local football. “In the interest of protecting the integrity of such investigations, we will not release any further details at this stage. We do, however, commit to acting swiftly, effectively and without fear or favour, should we receive evidence of wrong doing,” said Maduwa.

Sam Matodzi said that the allega tions of misconduct included match fixing, unethical conduct and soliciting a bribe before and during matches. He said that Safa Vhembe stood for

integrity in football and that fans should have confidence in the way the leagues were run. “Having clean competitions is our greatest asset. Our football matches should not be decided on the gambling market, but on the football fields. It is for this reason that Safa Vhembe has decided to tackle match-fixing, unethical conduct and/ or any corrupt activity head on, by imposing a zero-tolerance policy. We have opted for a combined repressive and preventive approach, comprising a wide range of actions and mea sures. We once more make an appeal to all our teams to report any sign of attempted match fixing and unethical conduct by our referees immediate ly. We therefore discourage any club official and referee from involving themselves in corrupt activities during our games,” he said

The investigation follows after own ers of several teams that participate in the leagues under Safa Vhembe’s auspices have complained about the conduct of referees. They believe that the referees are killing the standard of football in the region, because some of them request payment from clubs,

should they wish to win matches.

Some of the club owners, who did not want to speak on record, said that the issue of bribery had been reported to Safa Vhembe on several occasions. They said that they were happy now, because some of the referees had been suspended and this would send a mes sage to others that bribery in sport was not acceptable.

One of the referees who was sus pended is Nzunzukani Ngwenya, an assistant referee in the ABC Motsepe league and a referee in Stream E, the Sinthumule and Kutama area. Dion Mphuma and Oddies Moyana, who officiated in matches in Stream A in the Thohoyandou area, were also suspend ed. The other six suspended referees are from the Nzhelele area’s stream G, and they are: Tshianeo Ratshilumela, Rollet Mulaudzi, Aifheli Mudau, Khu liso Ramulumbi, Stephen Sinthumule and Livhuwani Makhomisane.

Matodzi said that the suspended teams were Tshikhwani Stone Break ers, Phylimak Football Club and Mu chipisi Happy Fighters. A club official, Mr Raymond Chauke of Muchipisi Happy Fighters, was also suspended.

Leopards out to collect the points

Black Leopards have reason to believe that they will collect the maximum points at the expense of JDR Stars, with whom they will rub shoulders in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match at the Malamulele Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A quick glance at the track record of Black Leop ards shows that Stars will be lucky if by chance they manage to go back home with a point in hand. Lidoda duvha collected five points and scored four goals in their last three matches. They beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium before they played to a goalless draw with Magesi FC at the Malamulele Stadium. They let University of Pretoria FC off the hook with a 3-3 draw at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria last Friday.

The team’s head coach, Mr Joel Masutha, is ada mant that JDR Stars will go back to the capital city with empty hands. According to him, they were work ing on different defence strategies at their training sessions throughout the week.

VFA must now beat Pretoria Callies

Pretoria Callies did not go back to Pretoria after their Motsepe Foundation Championship League game against Tshakhu ma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. They will only say goodbye to Thohoyandou after their next match, the one against Venda Football Academy (VFA) that will be played at the same venue on Saturday afternoon.

in the team will change the team’s fortunes. Mr Dladla took over from Mr Michael Loftman, who guided the team in their first five games, from which they had managed to register only one victory and lost the rest of the matches. Mr Dladla has guid ed the team to a goalless draw against University of Pretoria FC in the only game where he was shouting instructions to the players from the team’s technical bench.

Polokwane City and Baroka FC will fight for league points in their Polokwane derby at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadi um in Polokwane. The other weekend fixtures are Plati num City Rovers vs Magesi FC, University of Pretoria FC vs Casric Stars and Cape Town All Stars vs MM Plati num FC.

He said that the team’s failure to defend their 3-0 lead in their game against Amatuks was a bitter pill to swallow to everyone in the camp. JDR had played against Venda Football Academy at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium outside Pretoria on Wednesday after noon. (The result of the game was not available at the time of our going to press).

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will travel to Kim berly on Sunday. Their match against Hungry Lions will be played at the Galeshewe Stadium.

Things are not going according to plan in VFA’s camp. They are fighting for survival in the third position from the bottom of the log with seven points, which they had accumulated from eight matches. VFA has thus far only managed to win two matches, share the spoils once and suffer five defeats.

The new head coach of the team, Mr Simo Dladla, is optimistic that his presence

Containing the strikers of VFA, Rhulani Manzini, Sedzani Mudau and Rotond wa Mutsivhuli, will not be an easy task for the Callies defenders. Samuel Darpoh and the team’s diminutive playmaker, Kgotatso Mariba, will be expected to keep the fire burning in the middle of the park.

Just like VFA, Pretoria Cal lies are fighting for survival. They are languishing at the bottom of the log with five points that they have gained from nine matches.
