restaurant opposite Thavhani Mall along the R524 road in the early hours of Sunday (23rd) around 02:40.

He was in the company of a 27-year-old female, who was identified as Ms Sithonga Xhamla Sabelwe. She is believed to be a prosecutor working in the Polokwane area, but not much more is known about the woman.

The hit-style killing of alleged crime kingpin Thivhileli Vincent Hlungwani has elicited shockwaves and fear throughout Limpopo.

Popularly known as “General” or “Masipala” to his peers, the 32-year-old from Muledane was shot execution style at a

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still sketchy, but information filtering in is that, shortly before the shooting, the two were seen having a good time at one of the top pubs at Shayandima.

They are believed to have left the pub in Sabelwe’s car, and possibly they were followed and stopped by the unknown assail-

ants. Before they could alight from their vehicle, they were met by a hail of bullets from a high-calibre rifle shot through the driver’s door. More than 20 bullets were pumped into the car, killing the driver and his passenger at the scene.

Masipala assumed the leadership position of the Black Mafia Family (BMF) after the death of the Jerusalema/ Tshisole leader, Arno Mudau. Mudau (40) was killed in a vehicle accident in 2022. The circumstances surrounding the accident remain a mystery and not much is known about it.

Masipala is the second Tshisole leader to die violently and gang warfare is suspected. In 2021, another Jerusalema/ Tshisole leader, Naledzani Munyai (44), was also killed execution style. His bullet-riddled body was found in bushes in the Tshidzivhe area. He had been missing for almost a week before the grisly discovery.

Some members of the local community described Masi-

pala as a feared gangster who committed robberies, murders and kidnappings, but this was vehemently denied by his family and those close to him.

In 2015, Hlungwani made the headlines when he, together with Norman Mnisi, appeared in court and were charged with, among others, the murder of a police officer, detective Warrant Officer Thomas Mabada. The charges were later withdrawn.

Earlier this week, the dead man’s father, Advocate Ntsako Hlungwani, said they were in shock and fear after the incident. “We are struggling to gather information surrounding the incident from his friends, but they too are in in the dark and in shock. Without knowing what had happened, we do not feel safe as a family,” said Adv Hlungwani.

About the rumour that his son was a crime kingpin, Hlungwani said that as soon as he had heard about the allegations, he had sat down with him, but he had denied all

that. “As a parent, you do not know everything that your child does outside. What I know is that he was a very obedient and respectful child and was not a criminal. He owned rental rooms at Malamulele and was also in the car-wash business that sustained his lavish lifestyle,” he said.

Adv Hlungwani said that his son had no criminal record and had worked with the police in crime-awareness programmes at schools. “If he was a criminal, police would have no difficulty in arresting him,” he said. He added that the family members were preparing to bury him on 1 May.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident, saying the unknown assailants had used a white bakkie. “The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage, and police investigations are ongoing,” he said.

The acting Limpopo Police Provincial Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers,

called on community members to come forward with information that can assist the police in arresting the killers. Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Tendani Rambuda, on 0824517154, visit their nearest police station or phone the Crime Stop number, 0860010111.

Teenage mother in rehabilitation programme

The teenage mother from Mphego village who was arrested for murdering her twoyear-old son and dumping his body into a pit toilet was released into her mother’s care after she appeared in the Thohoyandou Children’s Court on Tuesday, 18 April.

The 17-year-old girl was arrested on Saturday, 15 April, after she had confessed to killing her child on 18 March. The case was postponed until 19 May.

Acting spokesperson for the Vhembe police Sgt Vuledzani Dathi said the girl was undergoing rehabilitation programmes. “She was released into her mother’s care because she is eight months pregnant again. The reason why she is undergoing rehabilitation is because we believe she is not in the right state of mind. No normal person can do what she did,” said Dathi.

Dathi said the girl’s mother had been asked to open a case of statutory rape. “[The girl] was impregnated at the age of 14 by a man who is now in his early 30s. According to the South African law, that is considered statutory rape. We have asked her mother to come and open a case of statutory rape. She said she would come after the funeral, but she never came.”

Dathi added that the girl’s mother could also face charges of defeating the ends of justice. According to Section 15 of the South African Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters), Amendment Act of 2007, a person who commits an act of sexual violation with a child who is 12 years of age or older but under the age of 16 years, despite the consent of the child to have the sexual act, is guilty of statutory rape.

Ms Pfarelo Mathivha, a clinical social worker and founder of the Isa Mathivha Foundation, who deals with teenage pregnancy, said parents were reluctant to cooperate regarding the law. “The parents must respect the law. If you look at this case, the parents should have acted earlier. A 14-year-old does not know the law. The parents are the ones who have the legal rights. It might be that the teenage mother was faced with a lot of problems and ended up doing what she did because she has mental challenges.”

Mathivha encouraged parents and community members to speak out about incidents of statutory rape and child abuse.

Two boys drown at Nzhelele

Two families were left devastated after their two boys, aged 11 and 12, drowned in the Nzhelele River at Tshituni tsha fhasi Ha-Malima over the weekend.

According to a close family friend, the two boys, identified as Vhonani Chaele (11) and Pfariso Ramudidibi (12) from Nzhelele Dzanani Musanda, left home on Saturday morning (22 April) with their mothers, who happened to be neighbours, to go to a party at Tshituni Ha-Malima. The party was only for that one day but, exhausted from the celebrations, the mothers

decided to stay in Tshituni village for another day. On Sunday afternoon (23 April), four children between the ages of 11 and 14, including Vhonani and Pfariso, sneaked away from their parents to go for a swim in the river.

According to the 14-year-old who went along with the other boys, they realised that the river was deep, but they went in anyway. They swam for a while when he suddenly noticed that two of the boys were busy drowning. At first, he thought they were joking, but then he saw the situation was serious and tried to rescue them, but he could not, so he rushed for help while the other boy watched over Vhonani and Pfariso.

When the older boy came back with help, one of the boys’ body was already floating in the water. The other body was only found by police divers at around 20:00 that same evening.

The acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major-General Jan Scheepers, confirmed the incident. “Members of the community managed to retrieve the body of one of the boys and thereafter sought assistance from the police, whereby the SAPS’s Search and Rescue Divers managed to retrieve the second body. Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Parents and guardians are

cautioned to ensure that their children do not take part in swimming activities unsupervised and to be extremely careful to ensure they don’t lose sight of their children to avoid such heart-breaking incidents,” said Scheepers.

The traditional leader of Dzanani village, Vhamusanda Vho-Sydney Khathutshelo Mamuha, said the incident was tragic. He cautioned parents to be very careful when their children are near rivers. “Whenever you go out with children, please look after them, especially in a foreign village. The situation is very difficult, but we are trying to assist in every way possible. Whoever can assist the families with the funeral is welcome to do so,” said Mamuha.

Thohoyandou High Court sets aside Nenngwekhulu’s appointment in 2018 as a senior traditional leader

A longstanding chieftainship feud between the Davhana royal family and the Nengwekhulu royal family was provisionally settled when the Limpopo High Court set aside the status of Nengwekhulu as a senior traditional leader. The issue now needs to be investigated again and a new recommendation needs to be made.

The matter was heard in the Thohoyandou High Court and it served before Deputy Judge President MV Semenya. He made his ruling last Tuesday (18th).

The Davhana royal family filed papers in the High Court opposing the Limpopo Premier’s decision

had the status of chief.

At the time, the Premier acted on the advice of the Limpopo Provincial Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims. Nengwekhulu filed a claim, stating that he was unfairly demoted to the status of headman, whereas he should be a senior traditional leader in his own right. The commission agreed with him and the Premier subsequently recognised Nengwekhulu as a senior traditional leader.

In his ruling, Judge Semenya sketched the background of the case, going back as far as 1864 when the then chief Davhana left the Dzata area after he had lost the battle with his younger brother, Makhado. He moved to the area south of the Levubu River and settled at what is today known as Mpheni village. When Davhana arrived here, several communities under leadership of chiefs such as Masia, Mashau, Tshimbupfe and Nengwekhulu

“The disputed facts … revolve around the question whether, upon their arrival in the area, the Davhanas subjugated the Nengwenkhulus who were occupying the area referred to as Ngwekhulu, and became their chiefs, as claimed by the applicants, or whether the Nengwekhulus lost their status as chiefs and became subjects of the Davhanas in circumstances alluded to in their papers,” said Judge

When the Nengwekhulus made their initial claim, they argued that, prior to 1958, the two leaders were functioning independently of each other. During the reign of chief Ndavhelesi Nengwekhulu, the apartheid government promoted Davhana to the position of senior traditional leader and relegated

chief Nengwekhulu to the status of a headman who was required to serve under Davhana.

The commission that was tasked to investigate the claim found that the Nengwekhulu community lived as a separate group and abided by their own customary laws of succession. They had never been dispossessed of their rights to their land and still resided at the same village. Their leaders served as mahosi (chiefs) under khosikulu (king) Mphephu Ramabulana.

The Davhana royal family disputed these findings and criticised the commission for not conducting public hearings and interviewing the elders at Tshirululuni and Mpheni. Their argument is that the Nengwekhulus had always held the position of an independent headman, serving under the Davhanas.

As an example, the installation of Nndavheleseni Muofhe William Nengwekhulu in 1942 was cited. The installation was conducted by chief Kingi Davhana. They submitted that it would have been unlikely that a headman would install someone as a chief.

In their submission to the High Court, the Nengwekhulu royal family stated that they did not object to the fact that Davhana held the position of senior traditional leader. Their objection is that Davhana should not exercise his chieftainship within their area of jurisdiction. Because independent headmen are no longer recognised, they feel that they need to be recognised as having an own chief.

Judge Semenya said that the commission that came to the conclusion that Nengwekhulu was a senior traditional leader had made irrational findings. He said the evidence showed that the Nengwekhulus had been independent headmen

(

gotas) as early as 1926. “[The Commission] decided on its own to promote [the Nengwekhulus] to a position they never held, under the pretext of restoration,” he said. The findings of the commission were set aside and the decision by the Premier to appoint Nengwekhulu as senior traditional leader was also set aside. The claim of Nengwekhulu will now have to be investigated again before a new recommendation to the Premier can be made. The Premier, the MEC for Coghsta, the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims and the Nengwekhulu family were ordered to pay the costs of the application in the High Court.

Speaking outside court after the judgement, Vhamusanda Vho-Mulweli Davhana, who is also the Davhana royal council’s chairperson, said the family members were elated. “The High Court has vindicated us. There were so many discrepancies in the whole issue. The decisions were one-sided, and from the onset a decision was already taken against us, but we were able to convince the court, which came to a just decision,” he said.

Davhana said that what they found surprising was that the government seemed to have such a great interest in the matter, which made them very suspicious. “But all in all, it is water under the bridge,” he said.

Asked to comment on the judgement, the Nengwekhulu royal family’s spokesperson, Vhamusanda Vho-Thavhadziawa Mutavhatsindi, said they were not in a position to comment. “We have nothing to say so far, but rest assured we will comment when the time is right,” he said.

Body of missing Tinyiko Baloyi found

Residents of Waterval are still in shock after the body of a local woman who went missing earlier this month was found on Saturday, 22 April.

Tinyiko Baloyi (44) from Bungeni, who worked as a security guard, left her home for work one morning but never reached her workplace. Her family reported her missing last Tuesday (18 April).

Baloyi’s body was found by a passer-by around the Hillside area, and the police were immediately notified. She had serious injuries to her head.

Baloyi’s family members say they were struggling to come to terms with her death and they demanded answers. Ms Sheila Mathevula, the family spokesperson, detailed how the incident has affected her family.

“She was a woman who used to look after her children and next of kin. It still hurts us how she had died, because she was always happy and never argued with anyone.”

Sheila said they were hoping that the police would track down the perpetrator, but that their situation was being complicated by the fact that they were now being sent from pillar to post. “It’s going to be more difficult because we are being delayed. Now we are requested to conduct a DNA test before we can bury our loved one. We don’t know why, because we showed them the pictures of the deceased and also evidence,” she said.

The police spokesperson in Limpopo, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed that the Waterval Police have opened a murder case that is being investigated.

Vleifontein lounge owner fighting for her life after kidnapping drama

The owner of Koyas Bar Lounge in Vleifontein, Ms Khensani Thovhakale (63), is still in critical condition after two armed suspects allegedly burst into her establishment on Wednesday, 19 April, started firing gunshots and robbed the place and all the customers of an undisclosed amount of cash. They then sped off in Thovhakale’s Toyota Hilux GD6 Legend bakkie – taking her and one of her (male) workers as hostages.

A family member who did not want his name to be mentioned told Limpopo Mirror that Thovhakale and the worker were thrown onto the back of the bakkie. At one point they decided to jump off the moving vehicle but, while the worker managed to roll off the gravel road and run into the bushes, she was unable to escape. “The suspects allegedly reversed the bakkie, tied her up, and locked her up in the vehicle. She was then beaten, tortured, and stabbed, resulting in additional injuries, while the bakkie was travelling at high speed,” the source said.

After 14 hours of distress for the family, the Lydenburg K-9 police team in Mpumalanga spotted the bakkie as it approached Lydenburg on

20 April, and a chase ensued. As the suspects fled, they drove onto a gravel road and abandoned the vehicle, leaving Thovhakale locked inside.

The badly injured woman was rushed to Lydenburg Hospital, from where she was transferred to a private hospital in Gauteng, where she is still in the intensive care unit, fighting for her life.

According to our source, members of the Lydenburg K-9 team performed a waylay during the chase and caught both suspects. One of them was apparently wearing a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) uniform. “Apparently, the one in the uniform failed to provide the police with a satisfactory explanation as to why he was wearing his full uniform while off-duty. What we don’t understand, is that these men were apprehended by the Lydenburg K-9 team as suspects but later released for further

investigation. We don’t feel safe anymore,” said the source.

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed the incident. “We can confirm that the Bandelierkop Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who allegedly committed robbery, kidnapping, and carjacking. The case was opened for further investigation,” he said.

Vho-Avheani is still going strong after a century

Musina Correspondent

Finding a 100-year-old person these days who still functions normally, without the aid of a caregiver, is rare, but this is the case for Granny Avheani Munyai from Phadzima Mazhazhani in the Vhulaudzi area, outside Louis Trichardt.

Vho-Avheani, who was born on 5 April 1923, celebrated her 100th birthday three weeks ago, but she is still razor-sharp of mind and still has clear vision and perfect hearing. She still walks unaided and does normal chores around her home.

“My late parents, Vho-Nkhumeleni (mother) and Vho-Magala (father), were blessed with six children: four boys and two girls. Only two of us, including myself, are still alive. All the others are deceased. We were born and spent all our lives at the

nearby Shanzha village, but as time went by, we later moved to Phadzima, where I live now.”

Vho-Avheani was married to the late Vho-Jege Mathivha and they had four children together, of whom only one still lives. “My home was a paradise to many, as I brew the best mahafhe (traditional beer) locally. With age catching up on me, I had to quit brewing mahafhe, but I started receiving the old-age social grant, which goes a long way in providing for my basic needs.”

She never went to school because in those days, the elders told them that education would make them crazy. “We looked after the goats, went into the mountain to collect firewood, and work in the fields. Unlike these days, boys and girls played separately and our elders received the respect they deserved. The initiation schools helped us

to develop into responsible adults,” she said.

She remembers when, back in 1939, some of the young men were forcefully taken by the then government to fight in the Second World War. “Women were never considered for the war because we were regarded as the weaker sex. I was 22 years old when the Second World War came to an end. It was very painful, because some of the men who were taken to the war never came back. Some, however, were lucky to return.”

She attributes her long life to healthy living and keeping herself fit. “I enjoy traditional vegetables like mushidzhi, vowa and delele. Sometimes I eat meat too. I drink a lot of water and keep myself fit by walking around the yard and doing routine work. I believe I still have many years ahead as I feel as strong as a teenager,” she said.

Mphalaleni learner dies in a freak accident

The mood at Mphalaleni Secondary School in the Mutale area was very sombre during the memorial service for one of the school’s pupils on Tuesday, 26 April.

Seventeen-year-old Mashudu Mathoho, a Grade 10 learner, was accidentally run over by a truck on her way home from school on 19 April. The incident that left her family, friends and fellow learners in a state of trauma happened along the Matangari-Tshiombo public road at around 16:20.

According to information supplied to Limpopo Mirror, the truck had almost passed her when the rear end of the truck hit Mashudu and she landed under the wheels. She was certified dead at the scene.

Dr Cedrick Nnzekiseni Mathoho, a family member who visited the scene, said the incident had left him traumatised. “We are shattered, and our hearts are bleeding as a family. I know myself as a very strong person, but seeing her body lying in a pool of blood had me in tears. The situation affected my health,

especially because I know her poor family’s background. She was the family’s light, and that star has been dimmed,” he said.

The accident also triggered memories of previous incidents that had happened at the same notorious corner. “From the information I gathered, two other learners have also been involved in accidents at the same corner, but I am not sure of the extent of their injuries.

I think something must be done about this road to prevent a recurrence of these accidents. We cannot wait for any more death or injuries to happen here,” said Mathoho.

Mr Thinawanga Maphagela, the chairperson of the school governing body, could not hide his grief. “As parents, we always hope for the best for our children, and we are shattered. No words can describe our grief and sorrow. Our call to government is to say we need a better road. The incident could have been averted if the road was wider,” he said.

Vhembe SAPS’ acting spokesperson, Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi, confirmed the accident. “We have opened a culpa-

ble homicide docket and investigations surrounding the accident are ongoing,” he said.

Ndifelani Daniel Nemaungani (48) from Shanzha is living proof that every little cent, if used wisely, can go a long way in changing one’s life. Nemaungani, who has been repairing shoes along the Phadzima road for the past 32 years, has over the years managed to build himself a five-room house, buy a car and conduct a high-profile white wedding when he married Shonisani, his beautiful wife.

Not only is the self-employed sharp-thinker able to provide for his wife and three children, but he has also saved enough over time to study communication management, business management and project management.

Nemaungani says he disagrees with people who say jobs are scarce in South Africa. “According to me, it is not true that there are no jobs in this country. The most important thing is to think outside the box and come up with honest ways of making a living. I have never looked for a job in my whole life. I believe that self-reliance is the only way to go in these tough times. I want to encourage unemployed South Africans

to stand up and create jobs for themselves because the government and companies cannot employ everyone,” he says.

Nemaungani started repairing shoes when he was only 16 years old. “I want to give special thanks to my good old friend, Khathutshelo Dongola, who taught me the trade back when we were still in high school. I used to repair everyone’s shoes, including those of my teachers, until I completed my Grade 12 schooling,” he adds.

Asked why he continues to repair shoes along the road when he has the qualifications to pursue jobs where he might earn more money, he replies: “Everything that I have today is as a result of repairing shoes. I love what I do because I believe that God has brought me into this world to help people by repairing their shoes. I don’t even think of looking for a job with my qualifications because repairing shoes is my life. The qualifications have helped me to broaden my knowledge on various aspects, and it is always good to read and gain more knowledge in this changing world, but I will continue [doing] what I love best.”

Soccer players and supporters got themselves in the middle of an ugly brawl, shortly after a Safa Vhembe SAB league match ended between Tshambobvu Junior Aces and Maranzhe Hungry Lions on Sunday. The match was played at the Maranzhe Grounds.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Aces, but apparently the Lions did not take the defeat so well. Chaos erupted when a fight broke out between players of the two teams and fans stormed onto the field to defend their respective team players.

One of the players, Thembuluwo Manyaga, ended up with a broken hand, while two supporters, Fhulufhelo Mukwevho (female) and Rofhiwa Mudau, were injured as well. They were all treated at the Donald Frazer Hospital

One of the senior traditional leaders of the Vhavenda people, Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rammbuda, said that the Freedom Day celebrations were doomed if better services were not rendered to the communities.

Thovhele Rammbuda was speaking during the build-up event to the Freedom Day celebrations, held at the Muswodi-Tshisimani Community Hall on Monday, 24 April. The event was organised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture

According to the coach of the Junior Aces, Mr Thifhelimbilu Manyaga, things turned nasty right after the match. He claims that the fighting was instigated by angry fans of the Hungry Lions, who started throwing different objects at Aces’ players.

“[The Lions] supporters stormed onto the field just as our players were ready to change after the match. According to eyewitnesses, a certain known man beat one of our team players and stabbed two of our supporters with broken bottles. One of them was hit in the face with a stone. They were seriously injured. Other people joined this man and fought with our players and supporters. They also threw stones at the Aces team’s vehicle,” he said.

One of the Hungry Lions supporters, who spoke anonymously, expressed regret about the incident and apologised to the Aces and the league on behalf of

and the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM).

“We cannot say we are celebrating Freedom Day while communities are complaining about poor service delivery. They need clean water from taps, tarred roads and electricity supply. Our roads are in a bad state, like the incomplete Bemuda road project in Muswodi-Dipeni, via Folovhodwe to Musina. We urge the government to speed up with the delivery of roads,” said Thovhele Rammbuda.

He said that, as traditional leaders who are the custodians of the people, they could not look on from the sidelines while rural communities suffered because better services are not rendered to them.

his team. He claimed that the perpetrators were not fans of the club. “Those hooligans were not supporters of our team. The persons who started to fight with the Aces players and supporters are from another rival team in our village,” he said.

A criminal case was opened against the suspect (who started the fight) that same day at the Thohoyandou Police Station.

Safa Vhembe President Mr Jabulani Ndobe said they were concerned about the incident. “As a league, we want players to use soccer as another form of entertainment and to create friendships with each other. We appeal to all teams to behave themselves and to promote friendship as it is our game,” he said. Ndobe said the home team had the responsibility to make sure that the visiting team and the referee were protected inside and outside the grounds.

He told the guests that he had recently led a delegation to a meeting in Polokwane with the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Nkakareng Rakgoale, to complain about the poor state of roads in his area of jurisdiction.

He said they had become concerned when they had been told to submit a presentation, while many letters of the same request had already been sent to the department.

On Thursday, 27 April, South Africans will celebrate Freedom Day under the theme “Consolidating and Safeguarding our Democratic Gains”.

Some of the learners from Ratshibvumo Secondary in Muswodi-Tshisimani village showed their enthusiasm and their love of their country by waving the South African flag – as symbol for the I am the Flag campaign.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s manager in the Vhembe region, Mr Thagalu Thovhakale, said there was a need for them as a department to teach learners the importance of celebrating Freedom Day as the democracy they were enjoying today had not come easily.

Veteran sculptor Noria Mabasa honoured with doctorate by UJ

Master

and potter

Ms Noria Mabasa, who has been described as one of South Africa’s living treasures, has been practising and perfecting her artistic craft as a sculptor since 1974. Due to the circumstances in that era, her creative work remained hidden and unknown to the outside world. Only in 1985, during the ground-breaking BMW Tributaries Exhibition in Johannesburg, through which she later toured West Germany, the doors to the world finally opened for her.

At the time, exhibition curator Mr Ricky Burnett broke all the rules by looking at South African art in its entirety and the centre of this exhibition was a set of extraordinary sculptures by the virtually unknown Mabasa.

Lufuno’s trendy traditional sneakers win heritage award

In 2019, Lufuno Netshithuthuni was shopping at a Pretoria fashion outlet, looking for a pair of traditional shoes to wear to a family event. The shoes she saw, however, were not appealing to her, so she decided to buy two plain pairs of tekkiesone pair for herself and the other for her sister - and decorate them herself.

Lufuno, who hails from Tshivhulani outside Thohoyandou, had no intention of starting a business, but when she posted her unique creations on social media, the response was overwhelming. And that was how everything started for her. Today, she is a reputable traditional-sneaker designer who recently won a Golden Shield Heritage award, hosted by the National Heritage Council, for Corporate Heritage Management.

Lufuno, who graduated in nature conservation from the University of South Africa in 2018, identified the gap between what customers need and what her brand could ac-

complish, and decided to start Funo Designs. Her creations have become a hit in the shoe market and are in demand all over the country.

“We specialise in creatively designing unique and innovative modern traditional sneakers for women from all cultural backgrounds who love cultural fashion. This was inspired by the growing entrenchment of traditional fashion by middle-class women in both rural and urban areas, including big cities. Our company currently runs its operations with three staff members operating from a garage, but we plan to expand to other parts of Limpopo and the country.”

Lufuno says she is living proof that everything is possible if one has the desire to succeed. “Look at the business gaps and do not hesitate to take a chance. We started very small – from nothing - but doors are

opening for us today. We cannot keep on complaining about unemployment when we can do something to earn a living,” she says.

Those interested in her trendy sneakers can visit the business at Stand 865, Phunda Maria and Tshififi Road, Ha-Dumasi, Thohoyandou.

Since then, she has become a household name and has produced hundreds of sculptures and pieces of pottery.

Mabasa’s creations are inspired by dreams, through which she says her ancestors speak to her. Over the years, she has amassed several national and international awards and accolades. Among them was a Silver Order of the Baobab award bestowed on her in 2002. She also shares her knowledge and skills with the youth

selflessly.

No one was surprised when the University of Johannesburg recently awarded an honorary doctorate to her. The degree was conferred on her during the university’s graduation ceremony, held on Wednesday, 19 April this year.

About this honour, the new doctor said she was overwhelmed with humility. “I am a rural woman faced with many odds, but I managed to overcome them. I am not educated, but my ancestors equipped me with skills to fend for myself. I have been to many parts of the world, exhibiting my work, and the response has been phenomenal. This can only be the grace of God that picked me from

nowhere and placed me into the world’s limelight. I am 85 years old, and it is hard for a person my age to stand up and carve wood,” she said.

Mabasa said the honour had revived and boosted her spirit to work even harder at producing more sculptures. “I am so motivated that I have started working on new projects. I will continue to follow my calling until God says it’s enough.”

She thanked the University of Johannesburg for this extraordinary honour.

Mabasa currently resides at Tshino village in the Vuwani area, where she runs an art school. She teaches her students the art of making clay pots and sculptures.

“It’s never too late to learn, even for elderly people,” said 60-yearold Reckson Tshishivheli of Khubvi village, who graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a postgraduate diploma in labour law on Thursday, 13 April.

Tshishivheli was employed by the Limpopo Department of Health for many years. In 1986, he worked as a health inspector, sailing through the ranks to become chief environmental health officer, and later specialist: employment standards until his retirement in September 2022.

He had also obtained several certificates of competence from the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, Technicon Pretoria, and others. His secret? He whole-heartedly believes that reading broadens the mind. “I wish I were still young, so that I could fully utilise the studying opportunities, but I thank God

because I have at least managed to fulfil part of my dream. I will keep on studying until I lose my eyesight. I will keep myself busy by reading books. People should know that we do not read books for salary increments, but to acquire more knowledge and to become well informed,” he said.

Tshishivheli has a strong message of encouragement to other elders who think old age is a stumbling block to further studies. “As elders, we are capable of making a contribution in the development of education in our country. Never say I will do tomorrow what can be done today. Age is just a number, and we all have the potential to achieve what we have set out to do in life.”

Cuban and Venezuelan delegates visit Tshivhase clan

To strengthen relationships between the Tshivhase dynasty, Cuba and Venezuela in agricultural trade, health, and economy, six delegates from Cuba and Venezuela visited Mukumbani village in Luaname on Friday, 21 April.

The Tshivhase dynasty, under Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, warmly welcomed their guests, which included the Cuban ambassador, Enrique Orta, and Venezuela’s ambassador, Mairin Moreno.

Tshivhase said that they had invited the ambassadors as they shared common ideas as communists. “My forefather, Thovhele Phiriphiri Tshivhase, was a true communist, so Cuba and Venezuela shared their ideas with the Tshivhase dynasty. We are hopeful that their visit to us will help to strengthen our political ideology.

We have also invited some aspiring businessmen around the Tshivhase dynasty to come and listen how the

two countries can help them,” he said.

One of the well-known businessmen in Thohoyandou, Mr Aubrey Mulaudzi, who was also elected to lead the interim Tshivhase Business Forum, was excited about the visit by the Cuban and Venezuelan delegates, hoping that they will now have a better chance to interact with the foreign countries.

Aspiring businessmen around the Tshivhase dynasty were invited to compile a list with their names and their respective business interests to promote twinning economic viability with Cuba and Venezuela.

Venezuelan ambassador Ms Mairin Moreno said the reason for their visit to Limpopo was to see how this province could be a preferred tourism destination as it had tourist treasures such as the Big Five and a rich, diverse cultural background.

Prior to the delegates’ visit, they first met with Limpopo Premier Mr Chupu Mathabatha and the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, in Polokwane on Thursday, 20

April, followed by a visit to the University of Venda and surrounding community in Thohoyandou.

Mathabatha said the visit aimed to nurture relations with long-time friends and countries that had

One of the most respected and feared bare-knuckle fighters in the country, Mbulungeni Solomon “Dice” Ndou, was laid to rest at the Vondwe Cemetery on Sunday morning (24 April). Big guns from the Vhembe Traditional Boxing Entertainment (Musangwe), including its motormouth general secretary, Mr Fhatuwani Nethononda, were in attendance.

Speaking during the funeral proceedings, family spokesperson Mr Nkhetheni Ndou said the late bare-knuckle champion was the only fighter to have beaten an opponent to death in the ring since the sport was formally recognised as one of the Vhavenda Tradition-

“When he was young, he used to hit tree trunks with his bare hands until the blood ran when he was angry. Elders like Mr Matambele taught him about Musangwe, to be able to face other strong fighters instead of hitting tree trunks. He is also the only bare-knuckle fighter we know who knocked an opponent out cold in the ring,” he said. The acting president of the Vhembe Traditional Boxing Entertainment, Mr Musevheni Chabane, better known in traditional Musangwe circles as 10 Years, said he was honoured to have been chosen by the great former champion himself to bid him farewell when he died. “He told us as an organisation when he was still alive that, if he passed on, I must be the one to represent the organisation at his funeral, and I feel very honoured for that. We will always remember Dice as one of the pioneers of Musangwe,” he said.

“Dice” Ndou was born at Vondwe village at Tshifulane section in 1949. He is survived by his wife and six children.

VDM’s water woes again highlighted

The Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget Public Consultation (BPC) meetings of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) recently kicked off, and one of the main concerns that were brought up once again was the issue of water shortages experienced in so many communities.

On Wednesday, 19 April, the VDM started its IDP draft meeting at Madimbo’s Community Hall in Musina, where hundreds of people from all corners of the municipality attended. Other concerns voiced during the meeting included the bad state of roads and lack of network services in some of the rural villages, which hampers communication.

One of the community leaders in the Madimbo area, Mr Hulisani Mafuwa, said that water shortages remained a serious problem in all 12 wards within the Musina Municipality. “We have not had clean running water for the past four years. We need clean water from our taps because water is a precious resource that we cannot live without. We cast our votes, believing that you would change our lives for the better immediately, but it still has not happened,” said Mafuwa.

VDM’s executive mayor, Dowelani Nenguda, who was joined by Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela, acknowledged that water remained a serious challenge in the district, and that was why they had set aside over R1.4 billion for water and sanitation. He said they were ready to drill new boreholes and repair old water infrastructure.

Nenguda mentioned that the VDM’s 2023/2024 draft budget totalled R3,5 billion, and said it had increased by 4.9%. He called on communities to submit their input to the VDM’s municipal manager. The deadline for the input is 10 May 2023.

Vhembe environmental scientist gets noted in Forbes achiever list

Talifhani Tshitwamulomoni, an environmental scientist from Vondo village, has been acknowledged recently by Forbes, an American business magazine, for his remarkable contribution to providing education and awareness on climate change in his community. He was among the Forbes 30 under 30 list of brightest game-changers under the age of 30.

The initiative by Tshitwamulomoni, who graduated from the University of Venda (Univen), educates communities in land degradation and biodiversity conservation. During his studies, he established the Universal Greening Organisation (UGO), a student-led environmental group whose mission is to eradicate the job gap by empowering students through community involvement and business-driven conferences.

In a telephonic interview with Limpopo Mirror, Tshitwamulomoni said the world was becoming more conscious of the implications of climate change and population growth today, and he felt honoured to have made this list. “It feels

fantastic, but it also confirms that the work we’ve been doing for the past nine years is appropriate. I’m creating something that people all over the world can see, which is a form of validation. I hope this inspires the next generation as they are busy chasing their dreams,” he said.

Tshitwamulomoni’s work has earned him global recognition from institutions such as the Saemaul Undong Academy in South Korea as well. He said they also assisted in agricul ture, with community back yard gardens and SMS development through training and access to the market.

“We have helped numerous commu nities with environ mental education and awareness, clean-ups, and tree planting. We educate them about the impact they have on the environment on a daily basis, and also create space for them to produce food themselves to sustain their families,” he said.

Univen Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Bernard Nthambeleni congratulated Tshitwamulomoni. “I’m very proud and grateful that one of our very own was given the opportunity to be part of such a distinguished group of young

Shovholwe’s men take a stand against gender-based violence

The prevalence of gender-based violence in the Vhembe region, especially within the Thohoyandou policing area, where it has reached alarming proportions, has prompted a group of men from the Shovholwe Block at Itsani Tshisahulu to come together and form a united front against this scourge. On Saturday, 22 April, they met at the Nzumbululo Zion Church to launch the Shovholwe Men’s Forum officially.

Stakeholders such as the SAPS, Tshisahulu traditional council, non-profit organisations such as Munna Ndi Nnyi, the Real Men Foundation, among others, were in attendance. An interim task team was elected during the meeting.

Shovholwe Block’s civic chairperson, Mr Norman

Matumba, said they were shocked by the high number of incidents where women and children were victims of abuse and killings. “We have not yet experienced killings here, but we felt we cannot wait for something bad to happen. We are meeting here as men with a destiny. We are creating a platform where men can meet and freely discuss whatever affects their daily lives. Men are faced with so many challenges, and they sometimes do not have anyone to share it with. The scourge of unemployment is hitting hard, and there is no peace in families. As a forum, we will seek companies and experts to hold workshops for our men, so they can learn new skills that can help them start their own businesses and earn a livelihood, thus taking some of the pressure off,” he said.

During the launch, Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum chair-

person and founder Dr Bardwell Mufunwaini implored the men to lead exemplary lives in the communities where they live. Mufunwaini, who has been championing this cause for women and children for decades, said finding that men, who were supposed to take care of their families, were the ones killing their wives and children was quite disheartening. “Do not use our name as men to maim and kill women and children. You are not one of us. As men, let us be examples. As men, we commend the initiative taken by the men here at Shovholwe, and to them we say, ‘go out there and preach the gospel of peace in the community,’” he said.

The newly elected task team chairperson, Mr Dovhani Mutavhatsindi, and his executives pledged to make the organisation work to the best of their ability.

The sky is the limit, says local photographer

Pfarelo Masutha of Phadzima has embarked on a journey to revolutionise the photography industry in Limpopo, and he has already become a household name. He specialises in capturing those very special occasions, such as weddings, parties and funerals, on quality videos and photos. Now, he is also starting to investigate making movies.

Phadzima started his photography business in 2010. “I have loved photography since I was young and was encouraged by well-known photographer

Emmanuel ‘Mr Photographer’ Davhana. I started my own company because of my passion for photography, and since then it has become my livelihood.”

He says that shooting people and things on camera is more than just a hobby for him. “It gives me joy to be able to capture memories that tell people’s stories, and making it my everyday job is a dream come true. Photography is a natural talent for me, influenced by a love for colour and nature, which I love to capture on camera,” he says.

Phadzima has big plans for his business.

“I have started very small, but I am dreaming of a big company with big

equipment, that can employ other youths. With the inspiration I am getting from other local photographers who are making it in Gauteng, I think the sky is the limit.”

He says that the quality of the work he produces has earned him many clients. “I am always humbled by the response I get from my clients. I didn’t at first have enough equipment to get the job done, but as time went on, things got better. More people saw my pictures on social media and gave me events and other jobs to cover. With the money from those assignments, I bought my own equipment, and here I am today. I am a lucky man to be able to do what I love best,” he says.

Masindi returns with the Forty under 40 Africa Award

Masindi Netshakhuma experienced great pride when she brought the Forty under 40 Africa Award home. The 26-year-old awardwinning author, cultural practitioner and filmmaker from Itsani, in Thohoyandou, won the Authorship and Creative Writing category at this year’s Forty under 40 Africa Awards, held at the Leonardo Hotel in Sandton on Saturday, 25 March.

Musina and Botswana film producers forge new path

The local film series Majuta, The Passion of Life, released its first episode on YouTube five months ago, which caught the attention of Film Garden, a film production company based in Botswana. Consequently, the Botswana film producer has partnered with Constable Visuals, a Musina-based film production company, to provide film equipment and enhance their skills.

The series tells the story of young boys who abduct girls and force them to work as prostitutes for money. Currently, they are filming the second episode, which is set to be released in early June of this year.

The project is produced in partnership with Evangelist Keoagile, the co-founder of Film Garden.

Zwivhuya, the founder of Constable Visuals, created the company last year and collaborated with Film Garden to train young and talented individuals in acting. He exemplifies the idea that creating opportunities for success is essential when they do not present themselves. The promising producer

expressed his enthusiasm for merging his skills with those from other countries, particularly Botswana. Zwivhuya said that collaborating with Botswana was advantageous because, as neighbouring countries, they should support each other, regardless of their origin.

“The producer contacted me and expressed his interest in working with me to create opportunities for young talent, which I have already begun. I am happy that [Evangelist Keoagile] came all the way from Botswana to Limpopo to conduct acting classes, and now we’re working on a big project together.”

Zwivhuya said that producing films kept young boys off the streets. However, he has had a few obstacles so far along the way, such as working on low-budget projects, which takes time for him and his cast and crew to bring to completion.

Keoagile’s said his goal was to develop their film-production skills. “I came here to help them with the appropriate resources. I brought my film equipment to shoot films that can make it to film festivals and TV stations. I also want to help them build connections and market their work,” he said.

The Forty under 40 Africa Awards identify, honour and celebrate a cross-section of the continent’s most influential and accomplished young business leaders under the age of 40. This year, more than 3 000 applications were received, with nominations from 24 countries in the 40 different categories. The international awards were officiated by the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Masindi said she had had a good feeling that she was going to win this award. “I just knew I was going to come back home with this one. I am very happy and thankful to have been selected out of so many other nominees for this award. I cannot thank my parents enough for the education privilege that they have given me. Without that, it would never have been possible for me to reach such heights and stand in front of such skilled and well-qualified people,” she said.

Masindi became part of the Lampstand Book Club in 2017 and released her first English poetry anthology, titled Vision and Legacy, in 2018. Later that year, she co-authored several books, including Tshanduko with Nndanduleni Jeffrey Manthakha. In 2019, her poem Lushie won the AVBOB Poetry Competition. In 2020, she ventured into the film industry, wrote her first script, and received an award for the development of her first film by the National Film and Video Foundation. She completed her bachelor of education degree at the University of Limpopo in 2021.

Business. The journey was not easy at all, but thankfully I have the best mentor and family. They made sure I never lost it on the way,” she said.

News about the release of JR Player and Racha Kill’s new single, Tshipidi, was met with excitement by fans. The new song forms part of the upcoming EP, titled Mutambi Dendele, which also features Rude Kid Venda.

With the release of the music video for Tshipidi last week, the musicians promised their fans that they were cooking up more hits. The celebrated artists are currently hard at work recording the rest of the 10-track album, set to be released by mid-May this year.

The single already has the streets abuzz with people dancing to the tune. “The combination of piano synths and log drums immediately got fans nodding along to the beat. We decided to mix the popular piano style that has been causing a sensation in the music industry, and it seems that our fans are enjoying it.

They can’t seem to get enough of the song whenever we perform it,” said Afro Pop and R&B artist JR Player.

Unarine Mutheiwana from Tshikhudini

Although she is ecstatic about winning this esteemed award, Masindi said getting votes from home had been very difficult. “It is unfortunate that Venda people seldom support each other. I got more votes and support from outside countries, like Kenya. They supported me because I am part of the Kenya-SA Chamber of

Phophi wants to get the message across via her book

To show her unwavering support in the fight against genderbased violence (GBV), Phophi Matshepete from Tshakhuma has just published her first book, titled Victim. “This book is very important, because it aims to raise awareness among South Africans about the negative impact that violence against women and children has. We hear and read about cases of violence and abuse every day, but we continue pretending that this is not real, simply because it has not affected us personally. You do not

have to be in a violent relationship to know that women and children are being abused.”

Matshepete (20) said she had come to learn the importance of sharing problems with those she could trust to avoid becoming a victim of GBV herself. “I now believe that sharing our problems with those close to us is the only way to mitigate the rising issue of GBV, and that is the message I want to get across to others through my book,” she said. Her book encourages women not to keep quiet about abuse, no matter in which form it comes.

The event organiser, Ms Zwiande Ngwana, said the aim of the event was to promote local artists and hook them up with continental and international shows.

“We are taking the show to the Sinthumule/ Kutama area, so that the people in Vhembe have access to gospel entertainment too and praise and worship with their beloved artists,” she said.

Ngwana said the event was expected to attract hundreds of gospel fans from all over Limpopo. Gospel artists to perform at the music festival include Selinah Muswobi, Zwiande Ngwana (Muloshi), Minister Pfunzo, Rotenda Maphari, Moses Musenwa, Maanda Mudau, Colbert L, Minister Isaac and Celestine Modiba.

Disabled artist Selina Muswobi said she had always believed that God’s timing was the best. “I don’t just sing. My songs heal, teach and make people dance. We listen as God speaks to us. Being invited to this festival means a lot, not only to me, but also to those who support my music,” she said.

Mr Moses Musenwa is confident that music lovers will not be disappointed in the show. “I believe in myself, and I know that, to perform in front of a big crowd is proof that I am accomplishing my mission of becoming one of the best gospel artists in the country. My invitation did not come as a surprise, because it is a reward for my hard work. It is very important to thank my fans for their unending support,” he said.

Tickets will be sold at the gate from 15:00. Entrance costs R30 (general), R50 (VIP), and R100 (VVIP).

Tshifhiwa Sigaima, better known as “Lirroy” since his days on Nzhelele FM’s afternoon drive show, Buluvhutsi dzheke, is a talented and experienced South African voice-over artist, radio host, and master of ceremonies (MC).

The 26-year-old was born and raised in Nzhelele Ha-Rabali, where he developed a passion for the entertainment industry at an early age. In 2017, he joined Nzhelele FM’s afternoon drive team, working alongside Portia Rambuda and Dakalo Muvhali. His deep voice made him a popular choice for radio jingles, and fans started to book him as MC for parties and other events.

Lirroy left the radio industry late last year

My book reminds people that it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to create a society free of violence, and that the only way to achieve this is to get victims to report gender-based violence to the police.”

According to her, South Africa needs more men who are responsible enough to stand together and reject these acts of violence against innocent women

and children, and who have the courage to spread the message of a violence-free country.

Matshepete started her primary school at the Tshikevha Christian School and completed high school at Mbilwi Secondary in 2021. She is currently in her second year of studying chemical engineering at Wits University.

Brian Bomba makes his comeback with another album

Soulful Xitsonga R&B singer

Brian Bomba is making a comeback after years away from the music industry with his highly anticipated upcoming album, Ride or Die, which is set to be released on 30 April.

The 34-year-old artist, born Brian Kubayi from Malamulele, is known for his smooth tunes and heartfelt lyrics. Born into a musical family, Brian was influenced by his late mother, Madya ku Bomba, an awardwinning Xitsonga traditional musician. He said he used to accompany his mother during her studio recordings.

“In high school, I got inspired by American R&B musicians such as KCI and Boyz 2 Men. Locally, I’ve always been inspired by great musicians such as Ringo, Oliver Mtukudzi and many others,” he said.

For his upcoming 16-track album, Brian worked with well-known producers such as Sumthyn Black. He said the album was designed to cater to live performances and to remodify the culture of music, with the message centred around love, history, and unity. “This album is more African soul and R&B, which is a complete shift from my previous albums. I aim to reach a wider national and international

to focus more on his career as voice-over artist and MC. “It was not an easy decision to make because I love radio, but now I have more time to focus on my other talents. Who knows, maybe one day I will return to radio,” he said.

Lirroy said one of the highlights of his career so far was when he was MC at Makhadzi’s Pre-One Woman show at HaRabali Stadium on 8 April this year. “I want to see myself working more on big events and gigs like that. I believe I will get there. I am working very hard on both my career as MC and the voice-overs. Some of the adverts I recorded are now playing on national radio and for me, that is an achievement,” he said.

Lirroy is also a musician who has recorded several hit singles.

audience with this new album, while remaining faithful to my roots.”

Brian said he was determined to make a lasting impact on the music industry. “Ride or Die is dedicated to the Gaza nation. This is my gift to them for taking so long to give them their music. I do this for our culture and for our African continent as well. I am a storyteller; I can touch people’s hearts and hopefully change someone’s life,” he said. When asked to explain his long absence from the music world, he replied: “I guess I was just not in the right place to make the kind of music that people knew me for.”

Miss P received her primary and secondary education at Makwarela Primary, Haggai Private, Mbilwi Secondary and Liivha Combined School. She holds a diploma in marketing, which she obtained from the Capricorn TVET College.

Her first opportunity in radio was at Univen FM, where she developed a love of the medium. She considers herself an innovative, talented, free-spirited, disciplined and hardworking person. Her inquisitiveness also makes her eager to learn new things every day.

When she joined Phalaphala FM in 2008, she presented the Denzhe show on Fridays from 14:00 to 14:30, Teezone on Saturdays from 11:00 to 11:30, and Dzhalinga from midnight to 03:00.

“I’ve grown into a responsible young woman. Prosperity is what I want to achieve. I’m still young, and there is still more to offer to my community. My goal is to harness my skills as a radio presenter. I want to inspire people and tell African stories,” she said.

Miss P says she does not allow fame to go to her head. She works for what she wants in life and makes time to study. “I set realistic goals for myself and strive to achieve them without failure. I was taught to believe in my dreams and in myself and to always learn from my past mistakes.”

Her message to young people is always to put their education first. “Go to school, find out what you want and go after it. Never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something; believe in yourself. I have always believed that no matter how many shots I have missed, I’m going to make the next one.”

Fans of Xitsonga R&B music have reason to be excited as Brian Bomba, the talented musician from Malamulele, gets ready to release his highly anticipated album.

New traditional leader for Manamani village

For almost 10 years, the rural village of Manamani near Shayandima had been without a traditional leader. This, however, was set right when Vhamusanda Nndavheleseni Ravele was installed as the new traditional leader of the village over the weekend.

Ravele succeeded his late father, Vhamusanda David Tshisamphiri Ravele, who passed away in 2013. Since then, the village had been ruled by the royal council, under the leadership of Aifheli Tshifularo.

The ceremony was held at Manamani Primary School’s sports grounds on Saturday, 22 April.

squabbles among the royal families in most clans, which cause delays in the installation process of new heirs to the throne.

Royal families must sit down and identify the rightful heir to the throne, rather than fight with each other over who will succeed after the death of their ruler,” said Thovhele Mphaphuli.

Mayor Rammbuda congratulated the new traditional leader, saying that the municipality was often blocked from implementing service delivery in villages that had no traditional

leader. Rammbuda said that, as a local municipality, they worked hand in hand with traditional leaders in the delivery of services, and she urged Vhamusanda Ravele to actively participate in the Tihosi/Mahosi Forum.

Commissioner Mamidza, who handed the certificate of recognition over to the new leader, told Vhamusanda Ravele that they had a programme in the department to educate traditional leaders on the advancement of good leadership skills.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, as the senior traditional leader, conducted the installation. Thulamela Mayor Sarah Rammbuda and the Commissioner for Traditional Affairs in the Vhembe region, Mmbulaheni Mamidza, were among the guests.

Thovhele Mphaphuli told Ravele to lead by example and rule without taking side or favour as he would be in charge of rich, poor, old, and even mentally ill people.

Maindis and First Touch Academy clash in exciting Limpopo derby

After registering their second victory last Saturday, Maindis Ladies are now sharpened

to kill First Touch Academy, with whom they will rub shoulders in their Hollywood Super League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday. Maindis had done the unexpected when they beat City Lads FC 3-0 at the same venue last Saturday.

Apart from the fact that sparks usually fly when Maindis and First Touch meet, Saturday’s game is expected to be an extraordinary derby. Maindis and First Touch are currently fighting for survival. The Polokwane side are languishing at the bottom of the log with five points, while Maindis are perched in the second-last position with six points. Should they manage to

beat First Touch on Saturday, Maindis are likely to jump to the 11th position on the log standings.

First Touch will pin their hopes on Jeaneth Fisher and Mokgadi Nkosi for goals ,while Petronella Ndinisa and Precious Choshi will be expected to keep the team’s danger area clean from the start to the end. On the other hand, First Touch must keep an eye on Vutivi Sithole, Thembi Minyuku and Hilder Xaba. The trio managed to score a goal apiece when Maindis crushed City Lads 3-0 last Saturday.

The other Polokwane-based side, Copper Belts FC, will undertake a journey to Kimberley, where they will play against Richmond United at the Galeshewe Stadium. Coal City Wizards will visit Royal AM at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Thunderbirds Ladies will host TS Galaxy Queens at the Mahikeng Stadium in the North-West. The other weekend fixtures are University of Johannesburg FC vs University of Pretoria, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies vs City Lads and TUT Ladies FC vs UWC FC.

The second winner in our spot-the-ball competition is Mr Nthomeni Mabuduga. Because no winner emerged two weeks ago, last week’s prize money doubled. Nthomeni thus walks away with R600 for guessing correctly where the ball was. He was one of half a dozen readers who guessed correctly, but his name was the one that was drawn. He said he would definitely enter again this week and stand a chance to win the R300.

Pat All Stars beat Happy Hearts 1-0

Pat All Stars were too strong for Madodonga Happy Hearts when they beat them 1-0 in a local derby played at Madodonga on Sunday. The match formed part of the Makhado Local Football league.

Stars took the game to their opponents, forcing Happy Hearts’ players to abandon their positions and pack themselves at the back. The home side threatened to score in the fourth minute. Their diminutive left-footed striker, Rotondwa Mathlamela, went loose from the far left corner after beating two defenders in a row and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box. Happy Hearts’ keeper, Mahlatsi Madzhiga, pulled off a brilliant save.

Hearts’ keeper, Mahlatsi Madzhiga, was reduced to a mere spectator in the last 20 minutes of the first half. At that

stage, Stars were all over their opponents. Although Stars enjoyed more ball possession in the first half, their strikers were not lucky enough to find the net.

After he had scored the only goal of the match, Mbulaheni Lekgonono was replaced in the 67th minute. Lekgonono hooked the ball in after a scramble within the box.

Soccer League match played at Ravele on Saturday.

Stars displayed entertaining football throughout the match. Highlanders, on the other hand, were only good at the far

back and their midfielders hesitated for too long and did not release the ball. This inability to feed their goal poachers put Highlanders’ defence under tremendous pressure.

Stars opened their account in the seventh minute after a defender of Highlanders, Adivhaho Muthali, handled the ball inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Lavhelesani Netshituni converted with ease.

Stars scored the second goal via Khathutshelo Rambuda, who forced his way through the defence and scored an easy goal from close range. Matome Phaswana of Highlanders was on target in the 20th minute to reduce the margin to 2-1.

Clement Mabasa scored Stars’ third goal after beating the keeper with a ground cutter, following a neat pass by Ntshavheni Liremi. Nditsheni Sitshatsha of Highlanders received a well-cooked pass from Neani Mulaudzi to score his team’s second goal. Mabasa completed his brace to score his team’s fourth goal.

Eight teams in Manyane tournament

Eight teams from Kutama and surrounding areas will participate in the Marubini Manyane Foundation soccer challenge starting on 27 April, with the final to be played on 1 May at Madodonga.

The teams that will do battle in the two-day event are Ablex FC, Ramantsha Blackpool FC, Pat All Stars, Benny’s Care Sports Academy, Fukula FC, Tshikhodobo FC, Blackstone FC and Greenway Soccer Academy.

Rodadau way too strong for Lacoste

After losing 0-2 to Sisters FC in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Tshitungulwane Grounds outside Vuwani two weeks ago, Rodadau FC made amends and beat Lacoste Morning Stars 3-0 at the Shayandima High School Grounds last Sunday.

Although they were playing in front of their home crowd, Morning Stars did not show any urgency during the match.

Instead of taking the game to their opponents, Morning Stars were playing defensive football from the onset and waited for the visitors to commit mistakes. That forced their defenders to perform overtime.

Realising that they had nothing to fear, Rodadau then opted to pull one midfielder forward to add to the number of strikers. This quickly paid dividends and they opened their account in the 24th minute when Mmanoko Molele scored with a neat header.

Although they were trailing by a goal, Morning Stars did not stop playing defensive football. Rodadau capitalised on this mistake and scored the second goal in the 37th minute. Modladji Malatjie was on target with a ground cutter after receiving a square pass from Shonisani Mafela. The score was 2-0 at the end of the first half.

Rodadau put the matter beyond doubt when they scored the third via Londani Negota later in the game.

Eagles and Marikana share the spoils

In their Safa Vhembe Regional League match that was played at the Ratshikwekwete School Grounds outside Vuwani on Saturday, Muziafera Blue Eagles shared the glory with Vyeboom Marikana in a 1-1 draw. The result of the game means that Blue Eagles

are now out of the race for promotion.

With a match to play before the end of the season, Blue Eagles are lying in the third position on the Stream D1 league log with 38 points from 19 outings. Saturday’s game against Marikana was a see-saw battle.

Blue Eagles were the superiors regarding ball possession for

the better part of the first half, while the visitors were in full control of the game in the last stanza.

Realising that matching the opposition was difficult for them, Marikana tried to neutralise them with rough tackles. The referee, Mr Andani Netshivhulana, normalised the situation by reprimanding Roda Maladzhi with a yellow card in the 19th minute. The scoreboard was still blank at the end of the first half.

Blue Eagles claimed the lead in the 64th minute. A substitute, Dakalo Rasimphi, hooked in the ball from a scramble within the box.

Marikana did not throw in the towel, although time was fast running out for them. They regrouped from behind, initiating some promising moves as they approached the Eagles’ danger zone. They came close to scoring when Pfunzo Motabatsindi beat the offside trap and shot wide from inside the box. Marikana finally found the equaliser in the dying minutes of the game when Lumelani Mathoma

Prizes for the top goal scorer, player of the tournament and coach of the tournament will also be awarded.

According to the organiser of the event and former Black Leopards striker, Mr Marubini Manyane, the cash

prizes are likely to increase, depending on the amount they will receive from the other sponsors. He said that after the tournament he was going to donate school shoes and sanitary pads to needy learners from the region.

The champions will receive R6 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a soccer ball. The runners-up will receive R2 000, silver medals and a soccer ball. The teams that end up in third and fourth position will win a soccer ball.

Although the affiliates of the Motsepe Foundation Championship League have three matches to play before the end of the season, teams that will be relegated at the end of the season are likely to be known this weekend.

Black Leopards must win their matches at all costs or else this season will be the last for them in the Motsepe Foundation Championship League.

After playing to a goalless draw with Hungry Lions at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein last Saturday, Leopards will play another crucial match away from home on Friday afternoon. Lidoda duvha will travel to Potchefstroom, where they will play against Platinum City Rovers at the Olën Park Stadium.

Should Leopards fail to maul Rovers, their two remaining fixtures will be a formality. Leopards are rooted at the bottom of the log with 22 points, five behind Rovers, who are fighting for survival in the third-last position on the log.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) are in a similar situation. TTM are perched in the second-last position with 23 points. Vhadau vha Damani will play their second home match in succession this weekend. They will host Hungry Lions FC at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday afternoon. Should they fail to collect the full points at stake and Platinum City Rovers beat Leopards, both Lidoda duvha and TTM will be axed as they cannot possibly bridge the points gap between them and City Rovers.

The head coach of Black Leopards, Mr Owen da Gama, is adamant that they will beat Rovers and keep their hopes alive to escape the relegation axe at the end of the season. He said that all the players were physically and psychologically fit and ready to absorb any amount of pressure.

scheduled to take place on the 29th. The semi-finals will take place on the 30th, followed by the battle between two Thulfa teams, Makuya Junior Aces and Guyuni Hot Spur. The final will also be played on 30 April.

The two teams losing in the semi-finals will each receive R2 000 and a soccer kit, while the teams that fell out in the quarter-finals will each receive a new soccer ball. The winner in the clash between Makuya Junior and Guyuni Hot Spurs will receive R1 000, and the teams will each receive a new soccer kit.

VFA poised to spoil Spurs’ party

The Thohoyandou Stadium is expected to be packed to capacity on Saturday afternoon when Venda Football Academy (VFA) will host Cape Town Spurs (CTS) in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match.

The game is expected to produce fireworks from the first whistle, for a number of good reasos. The visitors from Cape Town must win the game at all costs to keep their title hopes alive. Spurs are currently leading the pack with 53 points. Failure to collect the full points at stake will mean that Spurs

will surrender their leadership to either Polokwane City or Casric Stars. Casric Stars and Polokwane City are in the second and third position with 53 and 51 points respectively.

VFA also have every reason to grab the maximum points for the match. A win for VFA will mean that the Thohoyandou side are out of the relegation zone. VFA are lying in the 11th position on the log standings with 31 points.

VFA would have relieved the pressure on them, had they managed to win their game against Uthongathi FC, which was played at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban last Sunday. This match ended in a 1-all draw.

VFA’s performance improved dramatically after Mr Joel Masutha took over as the head coach of the team about three months ago.

Magesi FC will host Baroka FC in their Polokwane derby that will be played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Polokwane City will entertain Uthongathi FC at Polokwane’s New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The other weekend fixtures are University of Pretoria FC vs MM Platinum, Cape Town All Stars vs JDR Stars, Pretoria Callies vs Casric Stars, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC vs Hungry Lions and Platinum City Rovers vs Black Leopards.

Ugly scenes at Safa Vhembe match as fans assault umpire

The Safa Vhembe Regional League game between Ngwenani Young Chiefs and SMSA FC, which was played at the Tshedza Primary School Grounds in Thohoyandou on Sunday afternoon, ended in controversy.

Young Chiefs were by far the better side throughout the first half. Mayanyere, as they are widely known, were leading 3-1 at half time. Their bulldozer striker, Thendo “Dikita” Mathobo, scored the first two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game. Tshillilo Khavhatondwi scored the third in the 29th minute.

The home side pulled one back via Osedza Musetha towards the end of the first half. SMSA further reduced the margin through Madzulo Mudzanani, seven minutes into the last stanza.

The situation took an ugly turn after SMSA had scored the equalising goal shortly before the final whistle. The players, officials and fans of Young Chiefs were not happy with the referee’s decision. They confronted him in anger. They argued that the goal was illegitimate on the basis that it was scored after their goalkeeper had been kicked during the scramble that occurred within the box shortly before the goal was scored.

The referee, Mr Mpho Mphigalale, stood by his decision, but this only prompted the officials, players and fans of Young Chiefs to assault him with various objects. The lone referee tried to run away, but he could not escape as the angry mob immediately caught up with him. They continued to assault him while he was pleading with them to have mercy on him.

Realising that his life was at stake, Mr Mphigalale decided

to make peace with the mob by admitting that the goal was illegitimate and that he would award Young Chiefs a free kick, following the so-called kicking-of-the-goalkeeper incident that occurred before the goal was scored. Still trembling in fear, the referee, who was surrounded by the players and fans of Chiefs, went back to the pitch and ordered that the game should restart from inside the penalty box for Chiefs as a free kick.

The referee’s decision did not sit well with the players and officials of SMSA. They felt that they were denied a legitimate goal and that the referee’s decision to disallow the goal was taken under duress. They refused to continue with the game. The referee was forced to blow the final whistle. Both the match officials and the clubs were still to submit their match reports to the office at the time of our going to press.

Will Young Stars shine over Ladies?

Teams campaigning under the auspices of the Sasol Women’s League in the Limpopo Province will play their fourth league matches this weekend. Eight matches will be played at different venue throughout the province on Saturday afternoon, while only one fixture is scheduled for Sunday.

Lacoste Morning Stars are gearing up for an away fixture against Real Mighty Girls. They will fight for league points at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani on Saturday. Mighty Girls and Morning Stars are battling to come to terms with last weekend’s results. Morning Stars were crushed 0-3 by Rodadau FC at the Shayandima School Grounds, while Mighty Girls were beaten 0-2 by Sealene Ladies FC at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa.

Whether Tshandama Young Stars will have enough strength to stop Two for Joy Ladies is something that remains to be seen. Young Stars and Two for

Joy will meet at the Tshirenzheni Grounds in the Nzhelele Valley on Saturday. The Stars from Tshandama and Two for Joy are still to lose a league match this season.

Masakona Liberty Experience and Sisters FC will chase league points at the Masakona Grounds. Liberty Experience are still to win a league match to date. Merwe United, who are also battling to register a victory to date, will host Sealene Ladies at the Merwe Grounds in the Malamulele area. The only fixture scheduled for Sunday will be between Phomolong Ladies and Rodadau FC at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa.

Rodadau’s goal poachers, Lethabo Sello, Shonisani Mafela and Londani Negota, will be expected to force the defenders of Pho-

molong to play with their backs against the wall for the better part of the game. The other fixtures are Kanatla Ladies vs Marumo Gallants, Mandebele Happy Fighters Ladies vs FC 50 Stars United, Seven Stars Ladies vs Ramatlaohle Ladies and University of Limpopo Ladies vs Schoonoord Chiefs Ladies.
