Platgeslaan … letterlik en geestelik. Dit is die situasie waarin baie boere in die Levubuomgewing hulle tans bevind, ná nog verwoestende haelstorms die streek die afgelope week getref het. Boere in die streek is die afgelope paar maande verskeie nekslae toegedien. Alhoewel redelike goeie reënneerslae plek-plek voorgekom het, het die erge droogtetoestand die streek (soos in baie ander dele in die land) steeds in ‘n wurggreep. Hierdie droogtetoestand en onlangse versengende hitte het gunstige veldbrandtoestande geskep. Dit het daartoe gelei dat wegholveldbrande vroeër die maand amok gemaak het in die streek. In die Waterpoort-omgewing is meer as 4 000 hektaar veld in weiding deur vlamme verswelg. Kort daarna het ‘n wegholbrand miljoene rande se skade aan plantasies by Ratombo (Levubu) veroorsaak. Dit is opgevolg deur ‘n verwoestende haelstorm wat voorverlede Saterdag die Levubu-omgewing getref het. Aanvanklik het boere die ergste gevrees ten opsigte van oesskade en –verliese weens die eerste haelstorm. Dit het egter later geblyk dat die skade nie so verwoestend was nie, alhoewel baie boere se oeste vir die uitvoermark gediskwalifiseer is. In daardie stadium het die voorsitter van die Soutpansberg Distrikslandbou-unie, mnr Stephen Hoffman, gesê dat baie van hierdie vrugte (hoofsaaklik makadamias, piesangs en avokado’s) steeds geskik sal wees vir die plaas-

like mark. “Die situasie het drasties verander,” het Hoffman ná verlede Woensdag se haelstorm gesê. Die hael, sê hy, het meer boerderye geraak met baie hoër intensiteit. “Veral die Beaufort-omgewing het geweldige skade opgedoen. Dit het Klein Australië en Appelfontein ook weer getref,” het Hoffman Dinsdag gesê. Hy sê dat veral makadamias kwaai deurgeloop en tot 80% van die neute in sommige boorde afgeslaan is. Piesangs en avokado’s is ook swaar getref. Alhoewel hael soms in die streek voorkom, is die insidensie en intensiteit waarmee dit vanjaar voorkom, ongekend. Hennie Bonnema en sy seuns Hendrik en Pieter (Bonnema Boerdery) het veral skade op makadamias en avokado’s gehad, so ook Fanus en Gertien Viviers op makadamias en lietsjies, Fanie Havinga op makadamias en Vhavenda Boerdery (Lordans) op makadamias. Kallie van Aswegen het skade op sy kwekeryplante gehad en ander skade het voorgekom op jong boompies, koejawels en piesangs by Hannes en Yvonne Vorster en Dries Pretorius. Op Klein Australië het Herman de Jager, Toppie Topham en Pieter en Sarie Coetzee skade op skade gehad. Sutton Boerdery (voorheen GT Geldenhuys Trust) het groot skade op piesangs, makadamias en lietsjies gehad, terwyl Alan en Gill Whyte van Springfield groot skade op makadamias en avokado’s gehad het. “Hierdie skade behels ‘n verlies van tussen 50% en 80% van die boere se totale opbrengs,” het Hoffman gesê. Municipality cuts traﬃc department’s electricity By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Volgens Hoffman is dit in hierdie stadium moeilik om die skade in geldwaarde te bepaal, maar dit beloop miljoene rande. “Die vrugte wat nie afgeslaan is nie, is waarskynlik so ernstig beskadig dat dit nie meer bruikbaar sal wees nie,” het Hoffman gesê. Dit gesê, meen Hoffman dat die skade die plaaslike verbruiker nie noemenswaardig sal raak nie. “Dit is hoofsaaklik uitvoerverliese, met die uitsondering van piesangs waarvan daar, as gevolg van Mosambiek-produksie, gereeld oorskotte is,” het Hoffman gesê. Die hael het blykbaar net suid van die berg in stroke voorgekom. “Ek is nie bewus van ernstige haelskade noord van die berg nie. Daar was wel wydverspreide

hael, maar nie sulke groot en swaar neerslae nie. Dit het goed gereën noord van die berg, veral in die Musina-omgewing. Alldays en Vivo is egter nog baie droog,” het Hoffman gesê. Oor wat nog moontlike haelstorms betref, het Hoffman gesê: “Ons kan maar net hoop dat dit nou voldoende afgekoel het en die hael sal wegbly. Ek sal nie hierdie jaar voorspellings waag vir die res van die seisoen nie. Die weer wys nog geen patroon nie en dit hinder my baie. Die vreeslike uiterste temperature en gepaardgaande hael is nie goeie aanduidings vir ‘n seisoen met goeie periodieke neerslae nie. Ons mag dalk van tyd tot tyd swaar neerslae kry, maar die belofte van ‘n goeie reënseisoen is nog nie op die horison nie,” het Hoffman gesê. Die insidensie van haelstorms het talle boere onkant gevang. Omdat die Soutpansberg nie bekend is vir gereelde hael nie,

het meeste boere nie versekering vir haelskade nie. “Levubu se haeldekking is relatief nuut, aangesien daar nooit regtig ‘n vraag daarna was nie. Dit is egter nou beskikbaar, maar boere is nog skrikkerig en het daarom nog nie begin gebruik maak van hierdie produk nie,” het Ralda van Wyk, plaaslike korttermynmakelaar vir PSG Konsult, gesê. Sy het bygevoeg dat boere in die Hoedspruit-omgewing, wat ook swaar getref is deur haelstorms, hulle in dieselfde situasie bevind deurdat hulle nie dekking uitgeneem het nie. Van Wyk sê dat die eise wat hulle tans hanteer hoofsaaklik strukturele of skade aan voertuie is. Dit is ook nie baie goedkoop om jou oes teen hael te verseker nie. Van Wyk het genoem dat op hul PSG-platform by een versekeraar dit die boer R55 000 plus ‘n 10% bybetaling per seisoen sal kos om R1 miljoen se produk, soos avokado’s, te verseker.

An interruption of services at the provincial traffic department’s office in Louis Trichardt was the result of the Makhado Municipality’s decision to cut off the electricity to the building last Wednesday. The provincial traffic department’s office in town apparently neglected to pay their monthly bill. The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, confirmed this week that the municipality had issued a directorate for the power to be cut off. Bobodi did not want to disclose the amount owed to the municipality, saying such information was confidential. “The amount owed is around R9 000,” one of the workers at the traffic department’s office said. According to workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, it is not the first time that the office had failed to pay the electricity bill on time. The Zoutpansberger visited the offices this Wednesday, some six days later, and found that the officials were busy assisting clients in darkness. Although the top officials had kept the power cut a secret to the public, some angry workers said that working in the dark offices complicated their work. “How can we be expected to render services efficiently while there’s no electricity?” said a worker. “Most documents need to be accessed and filed in the system electronically, but it seems some officials who are responsible for arranging for the electricity payment just chose to do things their own way.” A worker at the provincial traffic department’s office in town said that he nearly fought with a client on Tuesday morning. “He wanted me to check the status of his minibus, which operates as a taxi for a particular taxi association,” said a worker. “But I explained to him that there was a power cut and advised him to return either on Monday or The provincial traffic department’s office in Tuesday. He returned on Tuesday. I didn’t know Louis Trichardt is without electricity.

“Eers ná die tyd besef jy: Ek kon dood gewees het” Deur Andries van Zyl

“Weet jy, mens sien dit altyd op televisie en dan dink jy dit is nie so erg nie. Maar dit is iets wat jy vir niemand kan beskryf nie – dit is aaklig! Dan dink jy eers agterna: Jinne, ek kon dood gewees het.” So sê die 57-jarige mev. Ansie Bothma van die Pitstop Drankwinkel in Louis Trichardt wat verlede Donderdag ook die slagoffer geword het van ‘n gewapende roof - die sesde gewapende roof in Louis Trichardt in ‘n periode van vyf dae. Die Zoutpansberger het Woensdag met die personeel oor die roof gaan praat. ‘n Gewapende man het omstreeks 19:45, kort voor toemaaktyd, by die drankwinkel ingestap, ‘n balaklawa halfpad oor sy gesig getrek en almal in die winkel beveel om op die grond te gaan lê. Oomblikke later het ‘n tweede ongewapende rower (ongemasker) by hom aangesluit. Gelukkig was daar geen kliënte in die winkel nie. Die man met die wapen het na Ansie se kollega, mev. Gerda Szluha, gestap en gepoog om haar kasregister oop te kry. Gerda moes hom help om die kasregister oop te kry, terwyl die ander man na Ansie se kasregister gestap het. “My probleem was dat ek nie heeltemal gaan platlê het

nie, want ek wou sien wat gebeur,” sê Ansie. Sy het so half oor haar stoel gelê. Die man het haar beveel om haar kasregister oop te maak. Nadat hy die geld uit die kasregister uitgehaal het, het die man in Ansie se handsak begin rondkrap. “Toe vra ek vir hom waarna hy soek, sodat ek dit maar vir hom kan gee. Hy sê toe ‘Phone!’ maar ek kliek nie dadelik hy soek my selfoon nie. Ek gee dit toe nie vir hom nie – toe slaan hy my!” sê Ansie, terwyl sy beduie na haar regter wangbeen. “My gesig is nou nog seer soos hy my met die vuis geslaan het,” sê Ansie. Die hele roof het sowat vyf of ses minute geduur, maar dit het vir die personeel soos ‘n ewigheid gevoel. Geen skote is geskiet soos in die ander rooftoge waaroor die Zoutpansberger gerapporteer het nie. Dit was eers nadat ‘n kliënt net voor agtuur by die winkel ingestap gekom het, dat hulle besef het die rowers is weg. “Toe bel ek dadelik my seun en sê ons ‘n beroof en ek is aangerand,” sê Ansie. Sy sê dat hulle juis vroeër dieselfde dag nog gepraat het oor die berig in die Zoutpansberger van die vlaag rooftogte in die dorp, maar dat hulle nie verwag het dat hulle die volgen-

de slagoffers sou wees nie. “Ek het nie gedink dit sal met ons gebeur nie,” sê Ansie. Sy het eers nie besef wat gebeur nie. “Ek was verstom … Ek kon nie glo wat hier gebeur nie. Jy kyk daarna, maar jy sê vir jouself dit kan sekerlik nie wees nie! Toe alles verby is en ná ek aangerand is, toe het ek eers regtig besef wat gebeur het,” sê Ansie. Sy sê die een met die wapen was nie aggressief nie, maar die een wat haar in die gesig geslaan het was wel baie aggressief. Wat vir haar egter die meeste frustreer, is die arrogansie van die rowers. “Weet jy, hulle was nie eers bang gewees nie,” sê Ansie. Die rooftog, sê sy, het hulle almal ge-rattle. “Ons is definitief meer skrikkerig en ‘n mens is definitief meer op jou hoede.” Nog ‘n personeellid wat ook die aand in die winkel die nagmerrie beleef het, was die 40-jarige mnr. Lesley Netshakhuma. Hy sê dat hulle gehoor het van die vlaag rooftogte by onder meer Snappy Snacks en Fire Fly die Maandag voor die roof by hulle, en dat hulle juis die Dinsdag daaroor gepraat het. Hulle het onder mekaar in die winkel gepraat oor wat hulle sal doen as so iets met hulle gebeur. Dit, sê hy, het hulle definitief gehelp oor hoe om op te tree toe dit wel gebeur.

“As hulle vir jou ‘n opdrag gee, doen dit. Dit kan jou lewe red,” was Lesley se raad aan inwoners. Hy sê mense moet onthou dat dit alles net oor die geld gaan en geld is nie ‘n mens se lewe werd nie. “Jy lewe net een keer,” het Lesley gesê. Wat die huidige gewelddadige misdaadvlaag in Louis Trichardt betref, was Ansie baie uitgesproke. Sy sê sy het sommer een van die eerste polisiemanne op die toneel gekonfronteer oor waarom hulle nie iets doen aan die situasie nie. Sy sê egter dat sy ná die tyd bietjie sleg gevoel het daaroor, maar dat sy in daardie stadium baie kwaad was. “Ek voel hartseer dat ons pragtige dorp onder sulke misdaad gebuk gaan. Mense sê hulle wil trek, maar waarna toe?! Dit gaan maar orals dieselfde,” sê Ansie. Sy gaan egter hier vasbyt. “Ek het net besluit, julle sal my nie onderkry nie.” Die rowers het met etlike duisende rande op die vlug geslaan. Die polisie en lede van die Soutpansberg Dorpswag was kort ná die roof op die toneel, maar kon niemand aankeer nie. Intussen het die polisie ‘n kopié gemaak van die sekuriteitskameras se beeldmateriaal oor die roof om hulle te help met hul ondersoek.

Still no consolation for Desai family By Isabel Venter

There is still little consolation for the family of the late Mr Bhavesh Desai (43) who was brutally killed in an armed attack. Bhavesh was shot dead by an unknown number of suspects, who had followed him to his home at Wylliespoort after he had been visiting family in Eltivillas, on 5 October 2014. When Bhavesh tried to flee from his home’s gate in his car, the attacker(s) opened fire on him with a semi-automatic rifle before fleeing from the scene.

Shortly after the attack, two of the Desai family’s employees were taken into police custody on suspicion that they might have been involved. Rose Makhavhlu (43) and Patricia Livhuwani Netshisaula (38) of Nzhelele were later charged with Bhavesh’s murder and released on R5 000 bail each. Since then, the case has been proceeding at a snail’s pace, and no further arrests have been made. A third suspect, Liremi Mbulaheni Madilongamakatu (32), was also questioned and charged with the murder. Recently, the director of public prosecution (DPP) ordered that Madilongamakatu

be cleared of all charges as not enough evidence against him was obtained by the police. The DPP also ordered that the charge of murder against Makhavhlu and Netshisaula be changed to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder. The two women’s trial was set to commence in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court this Tuesday. Only Netshisaula appeared before the court, as Makhavhlu was receiving treatment for an unknown ailment in the hospital. Both were ordered by the court to be back on 14 and 15 March 2016, so the trial can start.

Die Soutpansberg Belastingbetalers vereniging (SBBV) het wel hul jaar amptelik afgesluit, maar het terself dertyd bekendgemaak dat hulle nog baie planne het vir die dorp. Lede het twee weke gelede ‘n bie tjie meer gehoor van al die projekte wat nog in wording is. Die grootste projek is tans ‘n skoonmaakprojek om die dorp se strate skoon te hou. Meer besonderhede sal later aan inwoners en lede bekendgemaak word. Deurlopend is die SBBV steeds volstoom aan die gang om hulle lede se munisipale rekeninge te admini streer. Dit behels dat die vereniging se bestuur self ingeklim en gehelp het met rekeninge waar daar ‘n pro bleem was. During the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, which started on 25 November and will continue until 10 December, the spotlight once again falls on domestic violence in our society. Although the campaign mostly focuses on women and children, it must be noted that men can also be victims of domestic violence, and that they have the same right to protection as women and children. Ms Friede Meissenheimer, social worker at the local branch of the South African Women’s Federation (SAVF), urged all residents last week to report any form of abuse. She explained the different types of abuse and said that victims must not suffer in silence. “Seek help, talk to someone you can trust and remember that it is not your fault,” said Meissenheimer. In extreme cases of abuse, Meissenheimer advised victims to obtain a protection order against the abuser. “You need to approach your local magistrate’s court to obtain a protection order,” Meissenheimer said. The first step is to fill in a Form 2 (Section 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act). “An interim protection order will be granted, where the respondent is ordered not to commit certain acts. He or she will also be given a date where they must appear in court to establish whether the final order should be granted or not,” Meissenheimer explained. A notice will then be given to the respondent to show cause as to why a protection order should not be granted. On the given date, both parties must appear before the court and, based on the evidence before him/her, the magistrate will then decide to confirm, amend or set aside the interim protection order. “If the respondent breaches the conditions of the interim or final court order, a warrant for their arrest will be made and he or she will have to appear before court,” Meissenheimer said. Christmas time is fast approaching. “It is that time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,” says Reverend Robbie Novella. Two Christmas Carol services will take place in Louis Trichardt and all are invited to join in the celebrations. The first carol service will be at Ons Tuiste on Thursday, 3 December, at 18:00. “The ‘younger’ generation really love this event as we go singing through the halls and bringing Christmas cheer to the home,” says Rev Novella. On Sunday evening, 13 December, there will be a Christmas Carol service at St Mark’s Anglican Church, situated at 128 Munnik Street. The service will commence at 18:30. “All are invited to come and sing carols by candlelight, as we prepare our hearts in memory and celebration of His timely birth, which heralded a new era for all mankind,” says Rev Novella. Renthea se ondervinding in die besigheidswêreld het reeds op ‘n baie jong ouderdom begin. Sy het begin deur die destydse Spareco se plakkate en vertoonborde te ontwerp en te maak. Na twee jaar het sy ‘n nuwe rigting ingeslaan en in Nictus se gordynafdeling begin werk. Sy het egter besef daar is ‘n behoefte in die mark vir ‘n spesialiswinkel wat op binnenshuise versiering fokus en haar eie besigheid geopen. “In die laaste 18 jaar het my projekte baie privaathuise en hotelle ingesluit, asook lodges in plekke sover as Botswana, Mosambiek en Harare,” sê Renthea. Een van die besigheid se grootste projekte was die Fusion Boutique Hotel wat in 2009 voltooi is. “Vir hierdie projek moes ek na Indië reis om die aankope daar te doen,” sê sy. In 2007 het House of Interiors ‘n eie fabriek begin waar kopstukke ontwerp en vervaardig is. Van die meubels word ook aan ander handelaars verskaf. In Julie 2012 open hulle ‘n tak in Tzaneen se Lifestyle

Centre. Haar droom om ‘n eie perseel te hê waar alles in een gebou gedoen kan word, het in 2015 gerealiseer. Sy en haar man, Fanie, het die gebou op die hoek van Erasmus- en Munnikstraat gekoop en dit aangepas om in hulle behoeftes te voldoen. “Ek glo ons gaan hier nog baie huise en hotelle in die toekoms mooimaak,” sê Renthea. Renthea het ‘n spesiale woord van dank gerig aan al die pesone wat hard gewerk het om hul droom te laat realiseer. “Graag wil ek vir Abraham van Maharba Builders asook Reineke Grobler en my man, Fanie Geyer, bedank vir al hulle bystand en harde werk tot op die laaste. “Ek wil ook vir al my personeel, Leon Koen, Makhado Ceilings, Raymonds Glas, Lukas van Mona Mona, Karen’s Catering, Sinewave en Redd vir die musiekoptrede bedank, asook almal wat kom help het aan die einde. Mazda’s latest addition to the zoom-zoom family arrived in Louis Trichardt this week and offers an interesting alternative to the Mazda 3. The CX-3 is a fun and feisty, sporty drive crossover with a can-do attitude, and arrived just in time on Monday afternoon for a quick photo or two. According to Mazda Louis Trichardt’s dealership principal, Mr Jaco Wepener, the CX-3 is expected to become a leading contender in the urban crossover market. “The Mazda CX-3 will be the latest addition to South Africa’s growing subcompact crossover segment, which is currently led by the Ford EcoSport,” said Jaco on Monday. The CX-3 is not a full-blooded SUV. It might look chunky, it might have all-wheel drive, but under the skin it is a Mazda 2 hatchback. They share the same wheelbase, and the CX-3 has just an extra 3 mm of ground clearance compared to its city-car cousin. The CX-3’s all-wheel drive system is part time, with the car defaulting to front-drive whenever it can to save fuel. Under the hood the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces 146 horsepower and is linked, locally, to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The cabin challenges more expensive brands with the use of soft-touch materials and is available in leather and suede seats, accented with red stitching and piping. There’s plenty of front-seat head- and legroom for taller drivers. All information displays and control systems are positioned toward the driver, based on Mazda’s “head-up cockpit” concept. The primary gauges are large and easy to read. There’s also a head-up display. A seven-inch touchscreen mounted at the top of the centre stack displays the navigation and audio functions, among others. For South Africa, three trim levels will be available, namely Active, Dynamic and Individual. The base Active specification includes standard features such as 16-inch alloys, electric mirrors, electric windows, a rear spoiler, a height-adjustment driver’s seat, air-conditioning, and cruise control. Dynamic, meanwhile, adds automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front foglights, keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, a seven-inch touchscreen, the brand’s multi-function commander

control, rear parking sensors, and leather treatment for the gear knob, handbrake and steering wheel. The range-topping Individual trim — which will be available only in conjunction with the self-shifting transmission — further gains navigation, a reversing camera, 18-inch alloys, LED fog-lights, daytime running lights, LED headlights, LED taillights, leather/cloth seats, and a sunroof. Some local publisher really must be pushed into taking it up. Perhaps Maano Tuwani of Guyo Books has the right contacts, otherwise perhaps Charles Leach, as many more besides ourselves will surely find the information valuable. Not many publications on local history

have been properly and objectively researched. The initiative to collect the information behind the street names is also very timely and encouraging. We are in danger of losing a lot of historical information at a time when it is either being distorted or ignored, and less and less time and money are being given to history and archives. In this largely illiterate society, where schools think they can substitute libraries with the Internet, there is a huge erosion of knowledge taking place for which South Africa will later be very sorry. So it is very heartening to see your efforts, and I eagerly look forward to learning the outcomes.

Een rede is aan die begin van die vers en die ander aan die einde van die vers. Ons kyk eers na die tweede rede. “Hy het vir hulle ‘n stad gereed gemaak.” Vers 10 sê: “Waarvan God self die ontwerper en bouer is.” Dus die een rede waarom God nie skaam is om hul God genoem te word nie is dat Hy vir hulle gewerk het. Die trots van God om ons God te wees is dus eerstens daarin geleë dat Hy vir ons iets gedoen het, en nie andersom nie. Kom ons kyk nou na die eerste rede: “Maar hulle het na ‘n beter vaderland, dit is die hemelse, verlang. Daarom is God nie skaam om hul God genoem te word nie.” Die woord “daarom” dui ‘n rede aan waarom God nie skaam is om hul God genoem te word nie, naamlik hul verlange, ‘n verlange na die hemel. God het vir ons iets wonderliks voorberei, en ons moet dit begeer meer as enigiets op aarde. Die stad van God is volmaak want God is in die stad. Die wenners van die dag was die senior/junior-span. Voor is spanlede Izelda de Bruin, Simoné du Toit, Junior Smit, en dan Wian du Toit, Tiny Rademyer en Bianca Smit van die juniorspan.
