Why should you go? The pub’s been given a long-deserved makeover. There will be rotating guest ales, a new barbecue menu for the al fresco dining area (we’ve spotted sea bass in beer en papillotte – thumbs up) and a snug where you can control the lighting and music level and press a button for service. When should you go? The blackboard menu is refreshed not once, but twice a day. Try the deli treats after lunch if you like pickled squid, marinated chillies, home cured salmon and braised artichokes; small plates include smoked potato terrine with soft poached duck egg and roasted quail and saffron aioli.

Disappearing Dining Club

Back in 5 Minutes is their backstreet restaurant and private dining room, hidden behind a clothes shop on Brick Lane (they take bookings and walk-in diners Wednesday to Saturday evenings). They also hold supper clubs in a Fournier Street townhouse as well as dinner dances and weekends away.

Uyen Luu

Uyen’s home in Hackney; leluu.com Retiring from the fashion business, Uyen decided to hold Vietnamese-themed supper clubs in her Hackney home and is now a fully-fledged Vietnamese food consultant, with a number of television appearances under her belt. Her book My Vietnamese Kitchen comes out later this year and the suppers run every Friday throughout the month of June.

Ferdie’s Food Lab

Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, E1; ferdiesfoodlab.co.uk Simon Fernandez’ regular banquets take place at an actual banqueting hall, and see a horde of switched-on diners partaking of adventurous, experimental cooking in an atmosphere enticingly described as ‘mindboggling’.
