ABSOLUTELY’S May issue highlights

In the early years of my journalistic career, I somehow landed the brilliant gig of an all expenses trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I actually regretted that a little once there, as part of the fun is taking a punt on a one man show that looks at telling the story of the universe in poetic verse, all for a couple of quid. I saw some truly horrific shows, but also caught acts that I had never heard of who caught me by surprise and were simply delightful.

I haven't been up there for a few years now, but I don't need to when we have something like the Brighton Festival rolling into town this month. It's an absolute behemoth of an event, with so much theatre, comedy, spoken word and top guests that there just isn't enough hours in the day to take it all in. But my advice is to pick a day, keep it clear, and just see what takes your fancy. You are sure not to be disappointed.

5 Wedding Must-Haves

Talking of days, our regular weddings special returns this month, where we look to offer some advice ahead of that most special 24 hours. We take a trip across some of Sussex's finest venues to tie the knot as, unlike festival surprises, you want to make sure you pick the right one.

Brighton Dome celebrates 50 years since ABBA’s historic Eurovision win

FThis Month’s Must See C

Knepp Dawn

lassical chart-topping artist Damian Montagu and sculptor and field recording artist Hazel Reeves announce the release of their collaborative single, Knepp Dawn, on 5 May. The composition for piano was inspired by the Knepp Estate, in Sussex, where Hazel regularly records soundscapes of the burgeoning biodiversity now thriving in the rewilded 3,500-acre nature park. The single follows the success of Damian’s classical album, In a South Downs Way. hazelreeves.com

i y years ago, on 6 April 1974, ABBA made history on stage at Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall as winners of the 19th Eurovision Song Contest, as their entry, Waterloo, scored 24 points and catapulted the Swedish pop sensations on to worldwide fame. Brighton Dome has marked the 50th anniversary of this iconic moment with the unveiling of a plaque on the venue’s exterior. The installation of the plaque coincides with the recent reopening of Brighton Dome’s magnificent Grade I and Grade II listed Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre following a major sixyear refurbishment. The project included substantial restoration and upgrades to both spaces, including conserving vital heritage features and improving the visitor experience and facilities for artists and audiences alike. An interactive digital timeline has also been installed, allowing visitors to explore Brighton Dome’s rich heritage – including the ABBA win –plus new dressing rooms, including one named Waterloo.

Brighton Dome’s history spans more than 200 years, making it an extraordinary space in which to bring the arts alive. Having originally been built as a stables and riding house for the Prince Regent before reopening as an entertainment space in 1867, the venue is at the heart of Brighton’s cultural history. Other legendary acts to have performed on the venue’s stage include the Southern Syncopated Orchestra, one of the first jazz bands to visit the UK in the 1920s, ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and, more recently, Beyonce. brightondome.org

Breaking the GLASS CEILING

Eloise Viola on finding her inner voice, growing up in Horsted Keynes and building up to her debut album

There’s a lot of hype building around Sussex-born Eloise Viola’s impending debut album –Glasshouse is out in May – but she has been turning heads since the very early days. “I sang in the carol service for my primary school’s church when I was tiny. I sang a solo for We Three Kings and my parents said everyone turned around open-mouthed when I started to sing,” Eloise laughs. “Nobody, including them, knew that I had any sort of singing talent. It’s hilarious to me now as my first public performance, as I would say my songs are quite far from church music…”

If her music was a religion, then you can say she is building quite a following. She writes catchy, upbeat pop songs, but for Absolutely it’s her powerful voice that really catches the ear – perhaps not a surprise when we discover an early influence.

“When I was 17, Adele’s 21 album came out and I loved it so much that I taught myself to play the piano so I could play and sing this entire album,” she recalls. “This was a bit of a turning point, not just on my songwriting, but really on how my life and career began, as playing the piano meant I was starting to understand music, write my own songs and then, later, able to perform for people, which is when I realised this was what I wanted to do.”

At this time, and when Eloise went o to university, she was struggling with body image, something that she speaks openly about today. “When I look back I am weirdly quite pleased that thoughts around my body image and food reached such a low that I had to do something about it,” she says. “I think catching it when I did meant that I was able to help myself before it got any worse, and I also think it’s given me a lot of insight into how people’s everyday beliefs can have such an impact on their thinking and their lives.

“I feel like what I learnt in counselling really gave me a bit of a toolkit to help

support me going into my 20s,” she adds. “Sadly what I went through is such a common way of thinking for a lot of people, and that’s why I want to share everything that I learnt on my journey since then. This is essential for building resilience not just with body confidence and how we look, but in all areas of life.”

It was during this period that her songwriting really kicked into gear. “Most of my songwriting began after university. I initially wanted to write big heartbroken ballads, like the Adele ones which had inspired me to play the piano and write songs in the first place, but I met a producer and a writing team and they steered me to write for pop,” Eloise explains. “Although at first I didn’t agree, it’s now something I am really grateful for as I love singing empowering songs that lift people, rather than songs that make people feel down. There’s definitely a space for both types of music, but particularly when I perform more upbeat songs, the energy I feel in the room is why I do what I do.”

“It's about love, heartbreak, self-love, body image, confidence and being single”

For anyone who has seen Eloise live, they will understand exactly what she means. “Live shows are my favourite part of my career,” she smiles. “I think you have to have a very di erent approach to performing to an audience that knows you (and have bought tickets to see your show) or new audiences at festivals or support slots. But for both I want to balance the experience so that the emotional message of the songs gets across, but people also have a genuinely fun time and leave feeling uplifted. It’s about them and their experience, it’s not really about you.”

Talking about support slots, Eloise landed a prime gig supporting Anastacia on her European tour. “It was an incredible experience,” she says on that time. “Her fans are lifelong and most had waited a very long time to see her perform live so there was such an amazing energy in every room we performed in. I felt so supported

course of a few years, and so it’s spanned a lot of time where I’ve experienced so much and had a lot of growth. But really, Glasshouse feels like it’s been my whole adult life in the making: it’s the accumulation of everything I’ve learnt about self-love, myself, confidence and also years of working to improve my songwriting and honing what I want my ‘sound’ to be. It feels like an accumulation of everything I’ve worked for.

“From track 1 to track 13, it’s a journey,” Eloise continues. “There’s a lot of 80s synth sounds, blended with some pop-y more modern dance production. The Glasshouse songs are all about my 20s, and most likely involve a lot of the same experiences that people have had. It’s about love, heartbreak, self-love, body image, confidence and being single. I am hoping the songs are a bit di erent and cover topics we all talk about a lot, but don’t usually hear in songs.”

Absolutely believes Eloise is set for the big time, so we reckon she will need to come back to Sussex to get a little peace and quiet. “I was born in Haywards Heath, but I grew up just outside the tiny village of Horsted Keynes. My parents still live there and my

by audiences on this tour that I was able to really experiment to a certain extent on stage, and I left feeling so confident in how I perform and in my message. I’m a bit of a preparer, it’s not very rock and roll, but I like to be really organised and I know exactly what I am going to do, but I’ve learnt that with performances in particular, you can do all the preparation in the world, but it’s only the experience of getting out and doing it that will make you improve and really nail how you want your show to be.”

Everything is now building up to the crescendo that is the release of Glasshouse in May. “I didn’t set out to write an album, but I can see now with the benefit of hindsight how all the songs came together serendipitously to form Glasshouse,” she says. “I’ve been writing the songs over the

brother was born in that house. It really is the middle of nowhere and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she says. “I love coming back and staying with my parents, it’s very quiet here and it’s nice to escape the madness of London.” And, as it all started here that day in church, will we be seeing Eloise performing in Sussex? “I am probably the same as most musicians in that nothing beats performing in your hometown. It always feels more poignant and emotional, a full circle moment wherever you’re at. I think it’s always a big mirror to see how far you have come.”

SHINING BRIGHT

Absolutely visits The North Star in Worthing as they celebrate a major makeover

The North Star in Worthing is now welcoming pubgoers back following an extensive refurbishment. Boasting a brighter, more contemporary aesthetic, the makeover has seen the pub undergo a complete transformation.

A refreshed bar, new soft furnishings and an expanded dining space are some of the new changes that have been made to provide guests with a relaxed and warm environment to enjoy their visit.

Serving up great quality food, The North Star o ers a great value fixed price menu with three courses available for £13.79 from 12pm–5pm, Monday–Friday and £16.79 after 5pm, Monday–Friday.

But that’s not all – the pub has updated its menu to include a wide range of new delicious dishes, including slow cooked rib of beef, shepherd’s pie, steaks and roasts available every Sunday.

In addition to the weekly fixed price menu there is also a Sunday set menu, where guests can add any set menu starter and dessert for just £2.50 each to any Sunday set menu main. There are also vegetarian and vegan options available such as the vegan wellington or veggie and vegan burgers. Nathan Laflin, the General Manager, will be celebrating his 10-year anniversary of running the pub this year. Nathan says: “After being here for nearly 10 years I feel really connected to the local area and the community. Living so close to the sea and having the South Downs on the other side of Worthing is one of the reasons why I’ve stayed for so long.

“We’re thrilled to welcome guests to experience our pub’s new look, whilst keeping the cosy feel of The North Star we all know and love.”

Why welding is the newest trend in forever jewellery

Welded jewellery is becoming a popular choice for weddings, rather apt with our special section this month. A welded piece can be a distinctive and meaningful option for couples, symbolising permanence in an alternative style.

Welded jewellery, often referred to as "forever jewellery", is typically made by permanently joining the ends of a bracelet or necklace around the wearer’s wrist or neck. This parallels the lifelong promise made in marriage as an unbreakable and enduring commitment. Many jewellers o er the option to customise welded pieces, allowing couples to create unique tokens that reflect their personal style and the special bond they share. This might include incorporating gemstones or designing unique shapes.

Italian jewellery brand Atelier VM was the first to bring welded bracelets to the UK and at their welding counter inside Liberty, couples often arrive together for a pre-wedding welding experience, which can be a memorable addition to the big day. And of course after the wedding, welded jewellery serves as a lasting keepsake of the occasion, continually reminding the couple of their vows and the special memories of their wedding day.

Welded jewellery tends to have a minimalist design, creating a modern, sleek look that complements a variety of wedding styles and attire without overshadowing the overall outfit. Plus, because welded jewellery has no clasps, it’s very comfortable to wear. The growing trend of choosing welded jewellery for weddings reflects an overall shift towards more personalised and meaningful elements in wedding ceremonies and celebrations. ateliervm.com

NOTES

RIDE IT OUT

Carly Glendinning tries indoor cycling phenomenon

SoulCycle, which is now available online

It's a busy Saturday afternoon in London's Soho when I arrive at SoulCycle's Great Marlborough Street studio. Entering through the light, bright shop upstairs, I check in at the reception desk, sign a rider waiver, and pick up a pair of cycling shoes. There's a buzz in the stylish changing room below, but I manage to find a locker, put on some leggings and a tank top and head into the studio. Loved by celebrities and fitness industry pros alike, the New York-founded indoor cycling chain arrived in the capital five years ago and it seems it's as popular as ever. The studio is packed full and being a total newbie, I choose a bike at the back of the class.

Members of the SoulCycle team are on hand to help me clip my shoes in and I'm ready to ride. I'm thankful that the studio is dark, so that I don't feel too self conscious, but as soon as they start pumping out the music, I find myself quickly relaxing into it. Following along is easy, and our enthusiastic instructor keeps the energy of the room up by calling out words of encouragement. The low-impact, high-intensity workout includes tricep dips (where you lean forward onto the bike's handlebars, supporting yourself with your abs), and tap backs (where you stand up out of the saddle and push your hips backwards). I

crank up the resistance for the hill climbs, pedalling furiously (although I'm in charge of the intensity throughout). There's also a weights section using the light hand weights stowed in the bike's holders. It's a full body workout, but my adrenaline is so high (thanks to the music), I don't have any trouble pushing through. "You're a SoulCycle convert now, aren't you?" says my husband as I bound through the door. I roll my eyes, but he's right, I'm hooked already and I can't wait to book in for my next SoulCycle class.

TO THE MIDDLE EAST

Holly Hallam, MD of Brighton-based DesignLSM, o ers a detailed look at their NAC and Sumosan interior design projects

In an era where European and British brands are making their mark across the globe, the dining experience landscape is being transformed with each venture. At DesignLSM, we have been delivering award-winning interior designs for hundreds of global dining destinations, including most recently two that have expanded to the Middle East: NAC and Sumosan (the latter is pictured on this page). As Dubai and beyond embrace a fusion of cultures, these establishments stand as examples of innovation and sophistication, setting a new standard for up-scale dining in the region.

Our journey with NAC, known as North Audley Canteen, began with a vision steeped in Parisian charm. Drawing inspiration from the quaint bistros in France, we set out to create an interior DNA that would evoke the nostalgia of European travel while reflecting the vibrancy of Middle Eastern culture. The designs for NAC’s Middle East openings (Riyadh, Doha and Dubai) were a testament to

this ethos, each site imbued with its unique interpretation of the original concept launched in Mayfair, London. We worked alongside F&B consultants Restaurant Keys to ensure the brand’s style was e ectively translated for the Middle Eastern market.

In Doha and Riyadh, we embraced a modern elegant approach, layering textures and playing with design elements to recreate the ambience of a traditional bistro. The newest addition in Dubai, which only opened in December 2023, takes a more cultured stance, drawing inspiration from the 'art de vivre' (art of living) of Parisian neighbourhood restaurants.

Throughout the design process, our goal was clear: to create vibrant dining destinations that resonate with a diverse audience, particularly the young and the young-at-heart. We curated spaces that exude relaxation within a stylish setting, fostering an atmosphere where guests can socialise and unwind in equal measure.

INTERIORS • DESIGN

Central to our vision was the creation of a timeless aesthetic, one that would provide a welcoming retreat for friends and families alike. Soft edges, curved forms, lush greenery, and soft tones enriched with warm timber and terracotta hues were integrated to evoke the essence of glowing summer days in Europe.

Materiality played a pivotal role in accentuating the distinct design narratives; from the rattan accents within the backs of chairs and bar front to bespoke globe lights, every element was carefully selected to pay homage to the art deco style of Parisian cafes, resulting in a design that is both refined and enduring. In a region where maximalist concepts often reign supreme, we made a conscious decision to embrace a more understated yet glamourous approach. By stripping back the palette to neutral tones and focusing on intricate detailing, we have created spaces that are e ortlessly stylish and undeniably luxurious, seamlessly transitioning from relaxed daytime spots to enjoy a co ee within, to chic, romantic evening destinations with delightful mocktails, French-inspired sharing plates, decadent desserts to devour.

In contrast to the Europeaninspired ambience of NAC, Sumosan represents a celebration of Japanese culinary craftsmanship within the opulent setting of Dubai’s hospitality landscape. Our journey with Sumosan began with a successful collaboration on their Doha outpost in Qatar; a project that served as a pivotal moment which helped establish a blueprint for future endeavours. Building upon this foundation, we embarked on the Sumosan Dubai project, tasked with

“Our goal was to create vibrant dining destinations that resonate with a diverse audience”

evolving the brand’s design DNA while creating a localised concept within the prestigious Dubai EDITION hotel.

From the outset, the team were driven by a commitment to showcase the beauty of natural materials and the precision of Japanese craftsmanship, seamlessly integrating traditional elements with a contemporary flair. Guided by Sumosan’s vision of luxury and sophistication, we embarked on a journey to craft a glamorous and highly engaging destination restaurant and bar, catering to the discerning tastes of both hotel guests and local visitors.

The location within the Dubai EDITION hotel played a crucial role in shaping our design narrative. We meticulously curated every aspect of the space to align with the hotel’s upscale ambience, ensuring a seamless integration that fosters a sense of all-day dining luxury. Whether it’s lunch, dinner, or late-night drinks,

Sumosan Dubai o ers an immersive experience that captivates guests from the moment they step through the door.

From the open theatre kitchen that tantalises the senses, striking art installations that adorn the space, to dark timber panels and river slate materials that were meticulously selected to reflect the elegance of the brand, a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity delivered a restaurant o ering that has since been a huge success and an inspiring dining destination.

Collaborating with partners such as Parla, we ensured that every detail, from the bespoke furniture to the intricate brass sculptures, contributed to the overall aesthetic and cultural richness of the space. The result is a dining experience unlike any other, where guests are transported on an experiential Japanese culinary journey that delights all five senses.

Completing the Sumosan Dubai project holds great significance for us at DesignLSM. It has been a privilege to work alongside a brand that is making its mark on the global stage, and our collaboration with Sumosan is a testament to our ability to deliver innovative and engaging spaces that resonate with clients and guests alike.

As we continue to push the boundaries of hospitality design, we take great pride in our contribution to Sumosan and NAC’s continued success and look forward to delivering many more exciting ventures in the future. designlsm.com

How to store your winter knits and win the battle against moths

When it comes to the wardrobe seasonal swap, and putting away knitwear, here are five tips to prevent clothing moths and extend the life of your jumpers.

1 THE BIG TURNOUT

Use the end of the season to have a cull. Go through your winter woollies, and be ruthless. Only store pieces that you love. Think about when was the last time you wore it and if it’s not seen the light of day, swap it with friends, sell on a second hand-site or give to charity.

2 CLEAN ALL YOUR KNITS

Never put away dirty knitwear or clothes. Food, sweat, hair and skin are loved by moths. So either wash or dry-clean before storing.

3 SPRING CLEAN YOUR WARDROBE

Light some candles, throw the windows open and take everything out of your wardrobe and wash, dust and vacuum. Try the gorgeous Natural Anti-Moth Linen Spray which has been specially formulated to protect your garments from moths and keep your wardrobes fresh.

which catches the boys, and the Moth Decoy which stops the mating game.

5 STORAGE

4 PROTECT FROM MOTHS

Refresh out of date anti-moth products, throw them away if they have been in the wardrobe more than a year and replace your sachets. Try the Pheromone Moth Trap,

Pack knits away in a breathable bag or box, in Acid-Free Tissue or an old pillowcase or wrapped in a sheet. Don’t leave them exposed to the air as moths will find them.

BREEDING SUCCESS

How the Loan a Lamb initiative cultivates hands-on learning for thousands of schoolchildren across Sussex

Following great success in 2023, the South of England Agricultural Society’s Loan a Lamb scheme has returned this year, reaching thousands of primary school children across Sussex and Surrey.

This year, 10 primary schools are participating, four of which hosted the scheme from 18-22 March.

The remaining six schools will participate after the Easter break, from 22-26 April.

A notable highlight was the inclusion of New Barn School, a specialist school for children with autism, marking its inaugural involvement in the scheme. The initiative had a significant impact on the students’ understanding of agriculture and its contribution to our lives and was built into the school’s learning for the week across science, geography, art, history, and more.

The Loan a Lamb scheme, held in partnership with local farmers, with educational support from LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Education and financial support from the East Sussex Proficiency Test Committee and Yeowart Agricultural, involves school sta and students caring for a ewe and her lambs for a week. Providing hands-on experience with livestock and agriculture, the schools are loaned a hutch and supplied with all the tools and information needed to care for the animals, made possible through the co-operation of five local sheep breeders.

A teacher briefing was held with representatives from participating schools, providing further information and training, including details on sheep

76 ABSOLUTELY magazines

care, biosecurity, health and safety, and emergency procedures. Joanne Hatton from LEAF attended to answer questions and provide support, together with the farmers supplying the sheep, as well as teachers from last year’s programme, who shared their experience of the project.

Phil Brunton, Nurture Lead at New Barn School, says: “We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of Loan a Lamb. Our school caters for pupils with highfunctioning autism, and the presence of the sheep was a form of animal therapy for them. Prior to the animals arriving, we had already named the lambs Pickles and Skittles. The pupils enjoyed being involved by mucking out, feeding the animals and ensuring that they were well cared for. We enjoyed excellent communication with the farmer, who was always on hand to answer any of our queries.”

“I believe it has such a positive impact not only on the children, but also on our local communities”

“It is crucial to get children involved in agriculture at a young age,” says Alan Smith from the South of England Agricultural Society’s Education Committee and Trustee of the charity. “The Loan a Lamb scheme is an exciting and educational opportunity for students in Surrey and Sussex. It provides a unique chance for students to learn about the importance of farming in producing our food and other products we use in day-to-day life.

“As a Society, we’re very proud to say that we have been running the scheme

for three years now,” Alan continues, “reaching over 8,000 students, and every year it’s lovely to see the schools and their children so invested in looking after the sheep. I genuinely believe it has such a positive impact not only on the children, but also on our local communities.”

The South of England Agricultural Society is a registered charity founded in 1967 from a consolidation of agricultural societies going back to the 1830s. The Society owns and operates the South of England Event Centre, a 150-acre venue situated just outside Ardingly in the West Sussex countryside. Visitors attending the Society shows and clients of and visitors to the Event Centre help to fund initiatives and projects that support agricultural education and countryside learning.

Working across Berkshire, East Sussex, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex, the Society’s aims are to showcase agriculture, horticulture and the countryside through annual shows which also raise funds that help serve the community through the provision of education, grants and awards for people with an interest or involvement in agriculture, horticulture and land-based industries.

Part of the Windlesham Diploma & Futures programme, this year’s cohort are the first to begin the school’s unique two-year course. From culinary conundrums to entomological inquiries, the budding young scientists delved into an array of insightful experiments, showcasing their natural curiosity, and amazing analytical and investigative skills.

Professor Whitty, who is a former pupil of Windlesham House, discussed the scientific experiments with pupils, which included Fizzy Fountains, an experiment which explored the reaction between Mentos sweets when mixed with carbonated drinks, to a study of animal behaviour that looked at the light preferences of mealworms, and the baking science behind achieving flu y cupcakes.

“I remember my own school project at Windlesham House: What temperature do you need to keep milk at before it goes o ?” recalled Professor Whitty. “I still have the project and it was probably my proudest moment at school. I really learned a lot from my science teachers when I was here and I’ve taken that with me.” These science projects form part of the

two-year diploma course which sees the school’s Year 7 and Year 8 pupils complete a comprehensive ‘learning for life’ programme in addition to their core curriculum subjects to help them flourish at senior school and beyond. Phillippa Faulkner, Assistant Head Academic at Lancing College, who supported the showcase, highlighted the value of these experiences in helping pupils to think more deeply, question and learn from their experiences.

Other experiments included the cognitive phenomenon, The Stroop E ect, which tested the impact of conflicting information on reaction time and accuracy using colourful and captivating experiments. The pupils also explored the aerodynamics of sail shapes and the principles of lift, drag and propulsion, and they even looked at the e cacy of face cleansers in removing bacteria.

“You don’t have to learn science to be interested in it,” continued Professor Whitty. “It can be fun and interesting. Learning a basic level of science is really important too, as it’s woven into our everyday lives. Remember, all experiments go wrong, most of mine did! Part of failing is that you learn from the process; that’s a key part of science.”

Jeary, Partner at Mayo Wynne

Baxter , explores the issues surrounding pensions on divorce

On breakdown of a marriage, pension provision is almost always likely to form part of the matrimonial assets and apart from property, pensions are often the largest asset in any divorce settlement.

In any case involving the split of matrimonial finances, the starting point is always an equal 50/50 division of the matrimonial assets. Pensions though are complex, they are notoriously di cult to quantify unlike monies in bank accounts or investments and cannot be considered to be like for like; for example, £1 of pension provision is not the same as a £1 in other assets.

Pension valuations are provided as a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value, which is specifically used within matrimonial finances. Given the distinct nature of pensions and the variety of products it is advisable to take specialist advice from a Pension on Divorce Expert (PODE), normally an

Actuary, although the term PODE covers a range of experts including Actuaries. An Actuary will produce a Report that calculates how to equalise the parties’ pensions in terms of income or capital so their pension provisions are fair following separation, taking into account factors such as the length of the marriage and the pension benefits of each scheme involved.

The division of pension assets are most commonly dealt with in two ways; o setting or a pension sharing order. When o setting, the value of a pension is o set against the other matrimonial assets, for example one party receiving a greater share of the net sale proceeds of the matrimonial home in exchange for the other party keeping all of their pension.

Pension sharing, by contrast, means that pension benefits are shared at the time of the divorce, usually in line with the pension Report produced by an Actuary. The spouse receiving the pension gets a

‘pension credit’, which they may choose to keep in the existing scheme or transfer to a new or existing pension scheme. Advice on where best to place pension provision should be taken from a financial advisor.

In separating pension provision, it is always better to consider waiting to apply for the Final Order in the divorce proceedings until a financial settlement has been agreed and approved by the Family Court. This is because certain pension benefits, such as survivor’s pension, can still be claimed up until the divorce is finalised; therefore, if a spouse passes away before the divorce is finalised, the surviving spouse may still be entitled to receive the death benefit of the deceased spouse’s pension scheme.

Pension provision in the UK is increasingly inadequate especially for women divorcing over age 65 who are particularly vulnerable to not having su cient provision. It is therefore vital that parties are aware when entering into a marriage that pension provision will form part of the matrimonial assets, even where one party financially supported the other whilst they cared for children of the marriage.

A couple planning to enter a marriage or civil partnership may decide to enter into a Pre-Nuptial agreement that shows what they intend to happen in the event the relationship breaks down; such an agreement can provide for what will happen to pension provision in addition to other assets.
