Don’t Wait Until New Year’s Eve To Start Your New Year Resolutions... Star t Right Now! By Kelly Walsh

ONLY

8% of people achieve their new year's resolutions according to University of Scranton research. The reason for this failure is that many people use the New Year as an opportunity to make large bucket lists of extreme makeovers, both professionally and personally. The average person has so many competing priorities already on his/her “to-do” list that this approach is doomed to failure. According to a recent survey, 22% of people who set new goals for themselves this year have already slipped up a few times and, itʼs only March! Start thinking about resolutions in this way:

"I can begin my new year any time"...

Kelly Walsh

20-year human resource veteran, president of 1SmartLife and author of the Teeter Totter Conundrum is an expert in work life balance practices and reaches top tier companies helping entrepreneurs take control of their lives by starting new year resolutions — NOW.

Companies start their fiscal year during different times of the year. Why do we sit around and wait around for January? If we don't give ourselves second, or third chances during the year, then we are expecting a high-level of perfection from ourselves that only offers 10 times in a decade to consider change! Those are extremely high stakes.

7 strategies to snap you out of your third-month slump and keep you moving forward on your goals any time of the year.

1. Take it one step at a time. I'm in favor of the Big Hairy Audacious Goal, but break it into do-able, bite-sized parts. Want to run a marathon? Start with a regular walking schedule. Looking to transform eating patterns? Identify and tackle them, one by one. 2. Add good, not just take away bad. Seek change for positive reasons; reinforce that direction by adopting similarly themed actions. Example, instead of going cold turkey cutting out soda, add drinking 8 glasses of water a day— first. Feeling more hydrated will make you feel better and likely help you kick the cola habit. 3. Establish a rewards system. The credit card companies already know this. We will work harder for the chance to earn points. Design a scheme to win credits for prizes that are meaningful to you, upping the ante for every target level achieved. How about a pedicure when you have worked out three weeks straight; a day at the spa when you've managed for three months? 4. Track it. Writing down daily activities related to your goal measures your progress, including when key milestones are reached. 5. Find an "accountability partner". This person doesn't have to be a close friend, or even striving for the same exact goal. Simply pairing up with anyone with similar objectives provides key social support, as well as spur a little healthy competition. 6. Expect setbacks. No one is perfect; progress towards a goal is rarely a straight line. Don't let one misstep cause you to drop everything and derail all that you've achieved. 7. Keep celebrating. Each decision you make towards a goal is worthy of a pat on the back.

.

Look at March as the new January. The new entrepreneur works on goals any time of the year and views it as a 'resolution reboot'. // bhtmag.com // 5

The Petersen Automotive Museumʼs “Race, Rock ʻn Rally” gala was the most exciting in the history of the museum. The Santa Monica Symphony A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Story: Stephanie J. Hibler Photos: Sophie Gayot, Santa Monica Symphony

SINCE

1945, the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra has provided FREE classical music concerts to music enthusiasts all ages that encompass every ethnic, economic and social spectrum. The symphony was founded by several Los Angeles studio musicians, and over numerous decades has evolved to its present, recognizable and illuminous form, presenting audiences with a ever-exciting array of talented Los Angeles musicians. The Symphony has become a major cultural staple of Santa Monica and Southern California Westside communities. Now, in its 68th year, the symphony attracts an audience of more than 5,000 each presentation with a delightful menu of classical and contemporary music. Paying tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra hosted its annual Martin Luther King Day weekend with an impressive jazz-like festival held at the SGI Auditorium in Santa Monica. Ian McIlraith, Director of Peace and Community Relations at SGI said, “We are honored to host the Santa Monica Symphony and welcome the community to celebrate Dr. Kingʼs life and his relevance to our lives today.” A spectacular presentation was the Harlem Symphony of African American jazz legend, William Price Johnson. The piece chosen for the performance was inspired by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and as Johnson detailed it... a musical exploration of the African American experience in America. The music was composed during the Prohibition Era and first premiered at Carnegie Hall. History dictates that the Harlem Symphony was deemed lost forever before the Baltimore Symphonyʼs Marin Alsop resurrected an interest in it, traced its never-again-heard-of-tracks which entailed locating and personally contacting all of Johnsonʼs surviving relatives they could find. The result proved to be astounding, exciting and historic. And, the lost music to the Harlem Symphony was found — incredibly stashed away in an attic. Guido Lamell, music director and conductor of the Santa Monica Symphony said, “Iʼm thrilled to be able to introduce our audience to this historic piece of music. Itʼs a great work that probably no one here has heard before... a true buried treasure.” Also in keeping with the theme of “jazz” for the sold-out festival was George Gershwinʼs Rhapsody in Blue.

12 // bhtmag.com //

The Santa Monica Symphonyʼs famed Musical Director is Guido Lamell. Itʼs his brilliant mastering of programing that keeps audiences thrilled season after season with performances. Guido began playing the violin at age six with his father as his first teacher — who was himself an avid amateur violinist. It was his dearest hope that one of his sons would become an accomplished violinist. At first, Guido did not “love” the violin, but he was good playing it, and he loved the attention it brought him. It was during his high school years that a true love for playing the violin began and ever since he never lost his passion for it. And his passion extends beyond the concert hall. An ongoing occurrence at the Lamell home includes the “orchestra.” Guido's colleagues gather at his home sometimes after a Sunday concert to play chamber music just for themselves, or for a group of friends. Guidoʼs wife Nancy says, “ As I sit and listen to them play, I marvel... what other profession is there in which the workers come home after work and do more of the same just for fun?"

.

The Santa Monica Symphony has received prestigious grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Irvine Foundation and Herb Alpert Foundation. The Symphony was one of only 64 orchestras in the country to receive a grant under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Other funding includes the City of Santa Monica, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, private foundations, local businesses and private donors. The Symphony has grown under the baton of seven conductors and music directors: Founding conductor Jacques Rachmilovich, composer Arthur Lange, Peter Meremblum, former CBS Symphony director Victor Bay, USC School of Music faculty member Yehuda Gilad, Occidental College professor Dr. Allen Robert Gross and current maestro, Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Guido Lamell. The Santa Monica Symphony was the first orchestra in the U.S. to record the First and Second Symphonies of Tchaikovsky which is among many from the classical repertoire. The Symphony is a member of the Association of California Symphony Orchestra (ACSO), The American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL), and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce. Concerts are FREE with open seating. Parking is also FREE at 1212 7th Street. For a schedule of upcoming concerts visit: www.smsymphony.org.

FOUR DECADES and GOING STRONG. THE DRESS that STARTED IT ALL!

DIANE von Furstenberg sat comfortably in a chair on

stage at LACMA's Bing Theater being interviewed about her life and the iconic wrap dress which made her famous, rich, and the woman she desired to become. The event was the 40th Anniversaryof the Wrap Dress—2014, and as von Furstenberg said... “Itʼs never happened to a dress before; for the same style to have survived so many generations and still appeal to young people. So we wanted to celebrate that.” Combining feminine sultriness and womanly strength, the wrap dress boasts sexual readiness and business assertiveness much like the designer herself. She designed the dress when she was 26-years-old and married to her first husband Prince Egon von Furstenberg, a Swiss-born aristocrat also from the fashion world. “Itʼs the dress that gave me my freedom, paid my bills, gave me my fame and allowed me to be free,” von Furstenberg, now 67 said. At the event she wore a dress from her Spring Collection and a tiger tooth necklace given to her by the late prince, whom she divorced in the 1970s. The event was filled with red carpet celebrities favorites there to pay tribute to von Furstenbergʼs “Journey of a Dress”. The exhibition opened with 200 mannequins wearing vintage and

contemporary interpretations of the iconic design. The decades-long hiatus of the dress is similar to her relationship with second husband, media mogul Barry Diller. The two met in 1975, dated five years, then parted to pursue other passions. They reunited in the late 90s and and married in 2001. At the Cameron Silver exhibition were portraits of the designer by Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, Helmut Newton, Francesco Clemente, Annie Leibovitz and others.

SURVIVING HOLLYWOOD: ON

SCREEN AND

OFF

by Carole Lieberman, M.D. “OH, Iʼm gonna die. I know, weʼre all gonna die…. But,

Iʼm gonna die today!” These lines spoken by actress Sandra Bullock in the movie Gravity, are perhaps the most chilling and haunting of any Oscar nominee for Best Picture. Why? Because astronaut Ryan Stone (Bullock) captures our unspoken fear of mortality and dares to confront us with it. Indeed, all the nominees for Best Picture reflect our struggles to survive in todayʼs unpredictable, greedy, and dangerous world, where death could be lurking around the next corner. This theme is reflected in taglines for American Hustle: “Everyone hustles to survive,” Captain Phillips: “Out here survival is everything,” Dallas Buyers Club: “Dare to live,” and Gravity: “Donʼt let go.” Astronaut Stone continues, “I'm still scared. I'm really scared. Nobody will mourn for me, no one will pray for my soul.” Indeed, many of us feel ʻlost in spaceʼ down here on earth. We are estranged from each other and worlds apart, just as astronauts floating without a tether. This was brought home to us in the movie Her, where Theodore (played by Joaquin Phoenix), heartbroken and damaged by a failed marriage, falls in love with a female Operating System who seems to love him back. Swept up in this fantasy, he plummets to earth, after discovering sheʼs ʻin loveʼ with countless others and she abandons him. Not surprisingly, for a time when our economy is on life support, financial survival is also a theme amongst Best Picture nominees.

Indeed, many of us feel ‘lost in space’ down here on earth. We are estranged from each other and worlds just as astronauts floating without a tether. Greedy sharks circle the waters: from con artists to criminals, brokers to Big Pharma, slave masters to Somali pirates...even nuns. In Philomena (based on a true story) the title character (played by Judi Dench) is on a lifelong search for her son, only to learn that nuns betrayed her by stealing and selling him when he was a toddler.

This brings us to the classic conundrum: does life imitate art or art imitate life? Is our collective unconscious, preoccupied with modern struggles to survive, affecting Hollywoodʼs creative focus, or are these top movies affecting our view of how cruel and cold-hearted our world is? The answer is: both. Characters die, vanish or are destroyed in all of the movies nominated for Best Picture, while the same is happening to Hollywood stars in real life, and too many by their own hand. Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won Best Actor for Capote, died recently from an apparent heroin overdose and misguided ʻtough loveʼ advice. Ironically, one of the actors with whom he competed for this Academy Award in 2006, was Heath Ledger for Brokeback Mountain. The medical examiner in that case reported Ledgerʼs 2008 death as an accidental overdose from prescription medication abuse. Recently as well, Julia Robertsʼ half-sister, Nancy Motes, committed suicide, leaving behind a note blaming Julia for driving her to do it. One can

only imagine how hard it is to not be jealous of a siblingʼs fame and fortune, on top of childhood sibling rivalry extending into adulthood. But the award for biggest elephant in the room goes to Dylan Farrowʼs allegations against Woody Allen for sexual abuse. Although, itʼs disturbing to believe that someone whoʼs spent so many years in psychoanalysis could do such a thing, Dylanʼs words do ring true. Unfortunately, life doesnʼt only imitate art on the movie screen. It imitates ʻartistsʼ described in news reports of drugs, divorce, suicide and sexual abuse. When life gets to be a struggle — and it becomes a struggle for each of us occasionally — itʼs important to remember the lessons we learn from movies, and find inspiration from both REAL and REEL life characters, like Ron Woodroof (played by Matthew McConaughey) in Dallas Buyers Club, based on a true story. Valiantly struggling to survive a life-threatening illness, ignorance and bureaucratic corruption, Ron leaves us with the lines, “I only got one life. I want it to mean something.” And isnʼt this the Hollywood ending we should be striving for and imitating? America’s Psychiatrist, Carole Lieberman, M.D., was recognized for her talents by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences who awarded her three Emmys. Described as “One of the nation’s top therapists,” her bestselling books and award-winning multi-dimensional career attract an international audience. 12 Years A Slave • American Hustle Nebraska • Captain Phillips • Philomena • Her Dallas Buyers Club • The Wolf of Wall Street Top Box Office Film Screenwriters Answer Questions About Their Careers, Challenges, Setbacks and Triumphs.

OSCAR-Nominated Screenwriters gathered at The

Los Angeles Film School with event host Backstory publisher Jeff Goldsmith, who moderated an all-insightful questions and answers Screenwriters Panel forum in the stadium-style Main Theatre of the school. The 7th annual event for students, staff and VIPs featured writers from eight nominated films of 2013. Celebrated panelists John Ridley (12 Years a Slave); David. O Russell, Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle); Billy Ray (Captain Phillips); Craig Borten, Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club); Spike Jonze (Her); Bob Nelson (Nebraska); Jeff Pope (Philomena); and Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) — all sat in the “HOT SEATS” answering Goldsmith's questions about the beginning of their careers, their biggest professional challenges and setbacks, and their recent creative triumphs. Ridley, whose film, 12-Years A Slave engulfs the most wrenching subject matter of any of the nominated scripts, expressed to Los Angeles Film School students and other attendees that it was never his intention to deliver a dark story. “My goal with this film was to show not the horror of what this man endured, but to show that out of horrible things, beautiful things can occur,” said Ridley.

18 // bhtmag.com // 18 // bhtmag.com //

Captain Phillips' screenwriter Billy Rae told the audience of up and coming filmmakers, "I've had the worst day of my career 500 or 600 times... and I did not give up. That would be my advice to you: expect the bad days, and conquer them." As Goldsmith turned questions to the inevitable ... jobs that went no where and projects that got rejected... the audience felt a comradery among the panel as each brought forth stories of disappointment. Jeff Pope said, “The most important thing is to not be a writer in theory, but to be a writer in practice. Itʼs about application and itʼs about the long game.” Reflecting back on long days and nights at the computer, Melisa Wallack told about stretches of writing... “for 12 hours or 15 hours straight.” But her Dallas Buyers Club co-writer Craig Borten didnʼt hold back on his writing schedule saying, “Iʼll look for any type of deflection. “I donʼt have a 12-hour day in me, ever.” Hoping to top that revelation, Bob Nelson stated... “As someone whose first film is coming out at the age of 57, I feel I may be the worldʼs greatest procrastinator ever.” On the subject of recent projects, David O. Russell told the crowd, “Iʼm an ADD Guy”...describing introductory themes in his last films; ambiguous or uncomfortable scenes where he focuses on a

single character. “My last three films have started with the main character on screen, just living slowly. The fragility of identity is what makes a story good; in any good script, the characters are always changing. I love that mystery. I love the tension of the storyteller, whether itʼs to my 3-year-old or to audiences.” With regards to the challenges of adaptation screenwriting, using The Wolf of Wall Street as an example, Terence Winter said the ending of the film affirmed the theme of the movie. “I donʼt think our character does change very much. And I think the message is that it doesn't change. If this movie is really holding up a mirror to what's going on in society, and certainly on Wall Street, nothing has changed.” A full podcast of the night is available for free on iTunes. Artisan Of Beauty Dr. Tim Neavin Artisan Of Beauty Plastic Surgery Center By Suzanne Takowsky the brakes and most patients are receptive to a professional opinion if their doctor spends enough time explaining the concepts of beauty. Thatʼs the key. Reasonable Expectations. A surgeon and his patient have to be on the same page with regard to what a patient wants, what he/she can have, and what she/he will get. After all, every face, breast and tummy that we surgeons work on carries our signature. Most of my colleagues would agree we would much prefer to turn a person away, than “sign a canvas” we arenʼt proud of. When it comes to creating natural looking results, the art of the technique is as important as the science behind the procedure. In other words... for one to create beauty one must understand it. Plastic surgeons are trained in the aesthetics of the human form which separates our field from others. For natural looking results itʼs essential for us in the business of beauty to understand natural facial proportions and how an addition or subtraction of certain facial subunits harmonizes the whole.

WITH current interviews on nightly news and en-

tertainment talk shows, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Dr. Tim Neavin is front row and center with opinions on the business of beauty. Emerging from the winter slump most likely all of us are ready for a little something to spark up our look for spring and summer. I have long been a believer in the art and science of plastic surgery to fight the aging process. These days, however, as I look around what concerns me is the wave of unnatural results walking the streets. I donʼt think Iʼm alone in this observation. Are these results from surgery-gone-wrong, bad judgement on the part of a doctor, or is what we see defining a moment in time when the standard of beauty as we have known it has changed? I sat down with Dr. Neavin for answers.

“Below, a chin implant, neck lift and fat grafting to the cheek area significantly changes this man’s look without changing his identity. When natural proportions are respected, natural looking results are achieved.”

Beauty Building Treatments

FILLERS

“Many men donʼt want the downtime of surgery. injectibles or fat grafting offers immediate and dramatic changes without the need to have to ʻhide outʼ for a week.” “The example to the right, the jawline and cheeks were built out with fillers to create a more handsome facial architecture. Subtle and significant differences are the goal while maintaining a natural look. While it is true that some fillers are temporary, newer forms such as Voluma may last years. Fat grafting and Sculptra are permanent.”

Before

CHIN IMPLANTS

“This procedure has grown in popularity in the last 10 years at a proportion even greater than breast augmentation surgery. The main reason men say they want to After improve their looks is because their faces are now ubiquitous. They see themselves on Facebook, Instagram, Skype or video chat. Men have taken a pronounced aesthetic role in society. Our faces have become our signature. This and a youth-oriented culture, plus the aging baby-boomer generation have all created a perfect storm for male plastic surgery.” Before

After

ST: The more we look the more we see distorted faces that look less "ageless" and more "frightful." What's up with the puffy, pulled to the brink of explosion faces, huge unnatural lips and squinty looking eyes? Donʼt people have mirrors in their homes any more?

“More than ever, men are going under the knife to look better. One third of my patients are males between the ages of 25-50 — and this number is growing as men recognize the social and career benefits of a more youthful look which can include a stronger jaw line and more hair. Evidence suggests that it pays to look good. LITERALLY!”

TN: Something tells me thereʼs no shortage of mirrors in LA.

Thatʼs not the problem. Most people who have plastic surgery donʼt look unnatural, fake, or as you described, “distorted” or “frightful”. Results such as the ones youʼre talking about represent a small minority of the plastic surgery consumer population. Even though there does exist an “addicting” element to plastic surgery, most surgeons know when to put on

Men & Hair... or lack of it! NeoGraft — A revolutionary breakthrough advancement in hair transplantation. 40 million men and 21 million women suffer from male/female pattern baldness or thinning hair. NeoGraft is an automated game-changing system offering results that are virtually undetectable!

Minimally Invasive • Natural Looking Results • No Recovery Time • No Scars • No Pain ST: Some men hold onto their sexiness and manliness whether they have a full head of hair or not. Just take a look at some of our favorite male celebrities. However, hair loss for women is traumatic. Research shows that hair loss is a major contributor to loss of self-esteem and self-confidence. Hair pieces are obvious and hair plugs look worse in my opinion than being bald. Let’s talk about what is being acclaimed (even by Dr. Oz) as the miracle of hair transplantation technology. TN: Not only men, but women suffer from hair loss, and it has a devastating effect on a personʼs image about themselves. Every day we all lose hair — about 100-150 hairs per day is normal. Rather than looking to external causes for hair loss studies prove that hair loss is generally caused by predetermined genetic factors, family history, and the aging process. Hair loss can start in a personʼs 30s and 40s. Certainly, situational circumstances can also cause hair loss such as stress, diet, and hormonal changes (preg-

nancy, puberty, and menopause). Some of that hair loss returns, other times itʼs reversible. Today, a frequent loss of hair in women is caused by the harmful products they use on their scalps and hair extensions which can pull hair out and damage the hair follicles. Male hair loss has been difficult to correct without the stigma of surgery. Traditional methods left a “plug” look or a large scar across the back of the head. Today, advancements in technology have given us the NeoGraft machine that harvests one follicle at a time under magnification and separates hairs into groups depending on how many exist in each follicle. The 1s and 2s (as we call them) are placed in the front of the scalp and the 3s and 4s are placed moving backwards. The NeoGraft Automated System is unbeatable in restoring natural looking hair density. Itʼs done without cutting and no scars. Patients are awake and watching TV or listening to music. This technology is a real game changer for men and women with pattern Baldness .

#1 Trend for Women: Hair Transplantation For Thick Sexy Eyebrows

Gorgeous Women. Big Eyebrows.

Are THINNING EYEBROWS making you look older? Thinning eyebrows are one of the most recognizable signs of aging. Eyebrows define a person’s features, frame the face, convey emotion, and when shaped properly, eyebrows can make eyes look bigger. There is nothing equal to a full head of hair that can make a person look younger EXCEPT an incredible pair of thick, exquisitely shaped eyebrows. ST: Let’s talk about “must-have” facial trends for women. What’s HOT right now? TN: Megan Foxʼs eyebrows. Eyebrows may be the least appreciated component of beauty and identity, and many women donʼt pay attention to them until theyʼre gone. There is a surge among female celebrities (actually women in general) wanting beautiful, thick brows. In the 1990s, women got in a brow pluck frenzy, and thin, high-arched brows were desired. Also the aging process contributes to thinning brows as well. Today, that tweezed-thin brow look is OUT and what Iʼm seeing I call... “brow envy” because the thick, classic, illustrious eyebrows that graced Audrey Hepburn have returned to Hollywood. The brows of Megan Fox and Scarlett Johansson have redefined the aesthetic brow ideals that dominate covers of magazines. The #1 trend for women is turning to hair transplantation to restore brow fullness. ST: How did you get interested in eyebrow aesthetics? TN: Iʼve always been fascinated by facial proportions, aesthetic ideals, and the science of physical beauty. At the University of Pittsburgh, I began studying the common features of models; especially the eyes. We studied eyebrow shape and position with special focus on the arch; where it peaks and how it breaks. The ideal position of the eyebrow arch peak, and preferred angle of its break that appears most desirable starts from the outside corner of the eye on the boney rim, and peaks in height just outside the iris. The trend in eyebrow angle today is more flat, less arched, and a little lower. ST: How does one achieve thick, beautiful eyebrows, and what’s involved in an eyebrow transplantation? TN: While thin brows are easy to reproduce with makeup or tattooing, big brows arenʼt. And there arenʼt any reliable topicals that can sprout big, beautiful brows. With hair transplantation, we can graft hair follicles from the nape of the neck to the eyebrow to create custom shaped, big, beautiful brows in a few hours. With the precision of the NeoGraft automated hair follicle extraction machine, brow transplantation is exceptionally reliable and natural looking. Thick, beautiful eyebrows are remarkably dense, but thinning brows can have as little as 100 hairs per brow. Big, full brows have around 500-plus hairs. Grafting is determined by individual need, but the average brow transplantation consists of about 250 hairs.

CLIPPERS “IN”... LAKERS “OUT”... ? How The Lakers Are Looking to Reclaim A Storied Past By Dennis J. Freeman

Clippers DeAndre Jordan, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin at the Los Angeles Clippers Media Day.

CHANGE. It is inevitable and it happens in cycles.

In life... In Sports... The Los Angeles Lakers are experiencing the “change” as the era of “Showtime” is now a faded memory. The time capsule with Shaquille OʼNeal and Kobe Bryant running Phil Jacksonʼs “Triangle” offense to three titles is a distant past. Even the two championships the Black Mamba won without “The Diesel” seems centuries ago. The glamour, buzz and adoration the Lakers commanded EVERYWHERE has turned into angst and panic among its fan base as the team is booed for being blown out on home court. This is something the Los Angeles Clippers used to endure on a regular basis. NO MORE! Over three seasons, the Clippers have emerged the new darlings of the NBA with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin leading the way with more air accolades than a soaring eagle. The Clippers have the high-profile coach, and The Clippers have the two

superstars everyone wants to see night in and night out. The Lakers battled injuries all season, and never recovered. For the past three years, the Clippers were the “new kid” on the block waiting to knock down the neighborhood bully (Lakers) any chance they got. This year the expectation is about postseason for the Clippers and coach Doc Rivers, who once took the Boston Celtics to a championship. But does a couple of years of moderate success catch up to the decades-long dominance of the Lakers? Even the Clippers and their fans canʼt dismiss the 16-championship banners the Lakers claimed as an NBA franchise. Nor can anyone ignore the laundry list of Hall-of-Fame members wearing that Purple and Gold. However, the Clippers are doing a good job erasing memories of the “old” Laker NBA fame. Most Laker fans thought they knew their players. These days, we barely recognize Bryant, Steve Nash, and Pau Gasol as each has not only fallen victim to injury, but seems unable to recover their bounce. The Lakers have enjoyed a tremendous run as the most marketable franchise in the NBA. The reality is that Father Time catches up with us all even the majestic

Purple and Gold — something neither the Lakers nor their fans can accept. The golden era of Dr. Jerry Buss, Chick Hearn, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and “Showtime” has gone. The formulated success of Jerry West that engineered the OʼNeal, Bryant, Jackson... the “Triangle” is past. Laker fate was sealed when Bryant went down with an Achilles injury that kept him on the injury list when this season started. Nash, will likely get the Pro-Basketball Hall of Fame once he retires, but for now it seems although energetic, his 41-year age has turned into a liability. Young players like Trey Burke of the Utah Jazz, James Harden of the Houston Rockets, Step Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers are the rave of the league with their spectacular plays. Transition in life is not easy. Win or lose the Los Angeles Lakers are a legendary team that we will never forget.

Beautiful Models &

Exotic Locations

NEED I say more?

Well, actually yes! For premier Los Angeles business man-turned E-commerce mogul, Andy Khawaja whose vision is limitless, and whose billionaire mind set has the golden touch when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit — the concept of beautiful models in exotic locations is just one of his many business ventures. Andyʼs upcoming online reality show, Model Turned Superstar, has all the makings of a grand scale entertainment extravaganza. Filmed in exotic locations in 30 countries around the world, models representing different cultures compete against one another for the grandest prize of all: a chance to become a SUPERSTAR! And, it doesnʼt get better than that! Except for the fact the winner will receive a one million dollar first prize AND a film contract to star in three movies. SERIOUSLY. Andy is committed to making the show a global success, and he has the big budget bucks to bring it to the finish line. He has invested 100 million dollars in Model Turned Superstar and, it is a definite “GO” for a summer launch.

Model Turned Superstar STORY Suzanne Takowsky

ART PRODUCTION Ernesto Cuevas & John Booth 26 // bhtmag.com //

While the thought of producing an online reality show to a global audience of billions might be an overwhelming task for most — for Andy itʼs just another day at the office doing what he does best: online E-commerce, media and marketing. Andy is the CEO and Founder of Allied Wallet, a Los Angeles-based global payment solutions empire he started with the idea to offer business owners around the world a leg-up on their competition. Allied Wallet provides clients with online marketing solutions guaranteed to take a business — any business start-up or established — from 1% satisfaction to 100% satisfaction in the time it takes to process a credit card. Perks also include live support 24/7 in multiple programming languages. Allied Wallet got its start in 2002, when Andy came up with a solution to help business owners help themselves by processing quick turn-around credit card transactions. His thinking: put credit card funds into the business owners bank accounts within hours rather than wait days for their banks to release the money. Andy says, “What business owner doesnʼt need his/her cash available to operate their business? What good does it do business owners to have their money on stand-by in a bank where they canʼt access it for days?” Andyʼs formula for building enterprising success must be catching on. Allied Wallet has been featured in major media publications from the Wall Street Journal, Nilson Report, Start Your Business Arabia, Bloomberg, Wired and Fortune magazine to TIME; in 2013, INC Magazine touted Allied Wallet as one of the 500 fastest growing companies in the world. In keeping with his intention to help business owners help themselves, Andyʼs team at Allied Wallet implemented high-tech computer science to ensure online security. Under Andyʼs savvy eye for detail and extensive knowledge of E-commerce internet marketing, Allied Wallet offers its ever-growing list of local, national and international clients guaranteed protection for their accounts, using state-of-the-art internet fraud-prevention technology — a must if your business sends and receives currency from different countries. Not only has the accumulative success of Allied Wallet pushed Andy into the billionaire bracket with more than 100 million clients in 196 countries, but Allied Walletʼs advanced online technology is helping people expand their businesses with money-making ideas that translate into strategic planning and business expansion. Where does all this creativity come from? Andy says that every morning when he wakes up (crack of dawn) itʼs also time for 50 people on his staff to wake up as well. And, they wait for his early morning conference call; the first of many they will receive throughout the day — regardless of where Andy might be. Which could be anywhere in the world as he has business holdings on every continent. He admits itʼs difficult for his staff to keep up with all the enterprising ideas he dreams up. His latest think-tank brainstorm, Model Turned Superstar, was a concept born years ago and fueled by his frequent travels to different countries.

BORA BORA Bringing together exotic locations with beautiful models with superstardom on their brains seemed a winning combination. One more element: the show is produced and marketed for online distribution because as Andy says… “online is the future of everything; online offers the ultimate distribution to billions of subscribers.” Andyʼs says by 2015, 35% of the world will watch their favorite shows via iPads, iPhones and other portable devices. By 2017, the number will be 60%. By 2020, 80% of viewers will look online for entertainment. ST: Why a show about models? AK: Everyone likes to look at models and every model wants to be looked at. The popularity of the Victoria Secret Fashion shows and reality shows that focus on the modeling industry are big hits with millions of women, men and young people world wide. Even kids have reality shows based on them wanting to be models. Every model wants to advance her career to superstar status. Hollywoodʼs biggest female superstars started as models then moved onto movies and television. Model Turned Superstar offers talented and beautiful models the opportunity theyʼve been waiting for their entire lives—to be discovered; to have a career theyʼve always dreamed of. Our show is about a chance at stardom. ST: Do you really think every girl wants to be a model and a superstar? AK: YES. Adults put great emphasis on girls to look pretty from a very young age. Clothes, hairstyles, pretend make-up, purses, jewelry, shoes — even toys for girls are dolls that look like models. When a girl gets into her teens and early 20s, there is already a desire to be a model or movie star like those she sees on television, in movies and magazines. Society idolizes models and superstars, so why wouldnʼt a young girl want to be one? Who doesnʼt want to live a rich and famous life? The difficult part is making it in such a competitive industry. The process is more than about beauty. Thatʼs why very few beautiful women actually become supermodels and superstar actresses. Just listen to the stories from models and stars who talk about their “big break” when they got discovered. Everyone who has made it to superstar status talks about being in the right place at the right time. Model Turned Superstar is a reality show with real working models who want to become superstar famous and be recognized world wide. Through our online global access we offer

a platform to be seen by billions — not millions — but billions of viewers. And, exposure for a model is the name of the game. Just listening to Andy makes me wonder where this guy gets his incredible enthusiasm for life, adventure, and work. Some people get jet lag when they travel. Andy gets jet propelled, and exits the plane ready to hit the ground running. With Allied Wallet offices in Los Angeles, Scottsdale, The United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Germany, Macau, and India — his day-planner is a packed agenda that keeps him away from his coveted 9000 hightech Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles office, and his beautiful home. This guy travels 300 days a year. Andy says he misses LA life, but dedication to his work comes first right now. He hardly needs our sympathy though. Andyʼs mode of air travel is either first-class or private jet; accommodations are 5-Star; and needless to say, he enjoys the best restaurants, entertainment and social events in any country he visits. And, the good life is about to get even better as Andy inches his way toward the premier of Model Turned Superstar, an endeavor he is not only excited about, but proud of creating and producing. ST: Where did the idea for Model Turned Superstar come from? AK: Allied Wallet is a global online communication company, that takes me around the world. Wherever I go, I take notice of the culture, entertainment and business in each country. People everywhere have one thing in common: When they are not working they want to enjoy themselves and be entertained. Reality shows have introduced a new era of entertainment into our lives that takes us out of our lives, and into the lives of others and they give ordinary people a chance at stardom. Making the decision to invest millions of dollars into Model Turned Superstar was a calculated, researched decision that took years to finalize. We spoke with models, people on the street, entertainment VIPs, sponsors, production companies, promoters and film makers… you name it. Models everywhere canʼt wait to qualify to be on the show, get exposure, get discovered and jump start their Superstar dreams. Men, women and young people every age want to watch the fun, drama and competitions we have set up for the models. continued page 28

Thailand Dubai, Bahamas, Phuket Thailand, Hong Kong, Bora Bora — filming has begun and excitement for the upcoming Model Turned Superstar reality show is gaining notoriety around the world. Qualifying process continues in 30 countries. Upcoming... Australia, England, Canada, South Africa, Russia and Germany. 28 // bhtmag.com //

ST: What is the structural concept of Model Turned Superstar? AK: The show is about competition, talent and beauty. The show is about heart and soul and the motivation and determination it takes to be a Superstar. The concept is something everyone can identify with: Be the best in something, be recognized for it, and become rich and famous because of it. The show is built on competition between the models. The first prize is one million dollars, and my company will finance three movies filmed with the winner. Because the stakes are so high, we had to keep the competition high-voltage depending on the country where we film. In order to qualify to appear on the reality show, move to Los Angeles for the filming, and live with the other contestants in a magnificent home in Beverly Hills... models have to be up for the challenges we have set for them. As I said... this is not just about being beautiful. Itʼs also about being smart, social savvy and able to shine like a Superstar no matter where you are. Models will be meeting VIPs, agents, PR, management from every area of the entertainment industry. How they handle themselves, and their mind set to “make it” above and beyond all obstacles regardless of the challenges, or the skills of their competition is what ultimately determines who wins. It doesnʼt matter where our contestants come from in the world, the goal is to be recognized for her star potential and launch a career in the entertainment capital of the world — Hollywood. From there, the world and all it has to offer awaits the winner. ST: How do models “qualify” to get on the show? It almost sounds like the Olympics or Survivor? AK: Not quite. (laughs). Model Turned Superstar is no where close to the Olympics and there are no tents, or sleeping bags, and nobody eats bugs or is roughing it out in the wilderness. The models are treated with the utmost respect, and can expect the ultimate in 5-star accommodations throughout the entire filming of the show. But yes, we have competitions and they do encompass physical contests such as canoeing or swimming, and in one country we even had a fishing contest. In a “no-fear” competition, models were lifted by cables and made their way 500-600 yards in mid-air into a forest and floated between the trees. In Phuket, Thailand, we had one of the countryʼs most celebrated chefʼs come on the set as a judge. He demonstrated to the models how to prepare three of the most popular Thai dishes for that area. Then, he judged their cooking endeavors and chose a winner. In Hong Kong, we had an art competition and the models were asked to use their imagination and skill to recreate a famous piece of art by a renowned artist in that country. It was astounding to see how well they did. Some had never painted before.

“The show is about competition, talent and beauty. The show is about heart and soul and the motivation, dedication and inspiration it takes to become a true Superstar. The concept is something everyone can identify with: Be the best in something, be recognized for it, and become rich and famous because of it.” Hosts and judges for competitions are chosen according to their local celebrity status in each country. For one competition, we had three well-known celebrities from Hollywood as judges for two shows we taped. They were in awe at the enormous effort we put into choreographing the competitions. Challenges change from country to country offering judges a first-hand look at how the models handle themselves in different circumstances. A good reality show rests on the spontaneity of those who appear on it. We work with affiliates connected with the modeling industry in each country where we film. Media releases are sent out about the show, and before our camera crews arrive, personnel hired by us have interviewed and qualified the models. Out of hundreds of applicants interviewed, they choose 10 to participate in the 5-day competition. On the sixth day, we announce the three top winners, and they will move to Beverly Hills where final competitions are taped. Each day we have cash prizes and the models accumulate points for how well they do in the competitions. The model who receives the most points for her participation is our grand prize-winner. For the Los Angeles taping and competitions, the host and judges are entertainment personalities. Winning depends on self-confidence, talent and being able to enjoy the experience on her journey to becoming a Superstar. Of course, being beautiful helps as well. (he laughs). ST: How do you see life? AK: I see life painted in colors, and I make certain the people around me—the people on my team— also see life in colors as well. Seeing life in this way is visionary because it offers many possibilities in many different areas. The question we have to ask ourselves each day when we wake up: “How do I want to see life? In colors or in black and white?” We have the ability to paint life the way we want it. We are in control of how we see life and challenges and success. How we view these things makes the difference in whether or not we are able to achieve our dreams and our goals. I accomplish my goals because I look at life as having many options and opportunities, not limitations. That is why I am successful in business. I donʼt allow fear to stop me. Fear only slows people down. People have to look in the mirror and ask themselves… “Am I weak or am I strong?” Each of us has the option to be whatever we want to be in life. But we have to be fearless in going after it. We have created a show centered around the modeling business where young women can represent themselves not only with the way they look, but with their talents. What we have found are beautiful models who aspire to the top of their fields with the hope that doors will open with a multitude of possibilities as they are also very talented singers, designers, songwriters, musicians, comedians — you name it. The one connecting link between them is that they all want to be a Superstar! Donʼt we all?

Best Practices in Legacy Planning The following strategies may help assure the smooth transfer of both your measurable wealth and your values surrounding wealth to the next generation.

Education leads to confidence. Attaining financial security for you and your heirs typically requires you to accept responsibility for the management of significant investment assets. Whether you are single, married, or a surviving widow, it is in your best interest to receive as much education as possible about wealth planning, investments, successorship, and related matters. Even if you are not directly responsible for making important financial decisions, it is vital to have knowledge in these areas in order to communicate effectively with professional advisors charged with these duties. Professionals offer objective, qualified services. Relying on professional advice as opposed to family and friends is extremely important when making decisions affecting the accumulation, preservation, and distribution of wealth. What should you expect from a qualified professional? A good wealth advisor -- or a team with other

On a more personal note, a wealth advisor should work closely with you to: • Identify areas requiring special assistance, such as creating trusts. • Minimize taxes and planning costs. • Develop and implement a personalized wealth management plan. • Review your plan periodically and suggest changes when needed. Philanthropy is integral to family legacy planning. Wealth holders have a greater opportunity — if not responsibility — to make charitable giving an integral part of the legacy planning process. Families that are charitably inclined may have clear goals in mind, but they may not know where to begin. In order to choose the best strategy, you should work with a trusted advisor to evaluate a number of factors, such as tax management objectives, types of assets to be gifted, and your specific strategic intent. Then, choose from among a range of charitable giving vehicles, such as donor-advised funds, family foundations, gift annuities, and charitable remainder trusts/charitable lead trusts.

Children should learn about the responsibilities of wealth. Wealth is a gift that opens doors of opportunity not only for you, but also for your children, their children, and generations to come. Yet wealth can be a weighty responsibility that takes time to manage, maintain, and preserve. If you are a parent, you are no doubt concerned about the effects of wealth on your children's values and how the "money" lessons you pass on to them will resonate as they mature to adulthood. Family values should be held in the same high regard as family wealth. Family values — those traits, behavioral patterns, beliefs, goals, and morals that are shared by members of a family group — define a family's character as much as dollar signs measure a family's wealth. By holding shared values in high regard and setting an example of commitment to financial responsibility, philanthropy, and volunteerism for the younger generation, you will enrich your family's legacy for generations to come.

A Woman's Worth As stewards of the family legacy, women are in a unique and influential position. They are holders of great wealth as well as keepers of the family's moral and philanthropic vision. There are many financial, accounting, legal, and business tools to assist women in implementing a plan of action. Contact your financial advisor for guidance in mapping out a legacy planning strategy unique to your situation. Article Written By: Wealth Management Systems, Inc. Business Strategy Success for 2014 By Harvey Mackay 3 Basic Keys

Goals tend to tap the deeper resources and draw the best out of life.” — Harvey Mackay 32 // bhtmag.com //

#1 Course In Class You have probably heard the term, “He or she is a class act.” Of course, itʼs always a compliment. But exactly what does that mean? Class is easy to recognize, but much harder to define. Similarly, the absence of class is easy to detect – and a serious flaw for anyone who aspires to be successful. First of all, class is not an “act.” Itʼs a deep-seated way of life for those who possess it. Having class involves good manners, politeness, pride without showboating, empathy, humility, and an abundance of self-control. The actions of class act people speak louder than their words. You can see it in their body language and the way they carry themselves. Class always shows without being announced. People can tell if you have class by the way you interact with others. If you have class, you donʼt need much of anything else to be a winner. If you donʼt have it, no matter what you do, it wonʼt make up the difference. Money, notoriety or success by themselves wonʼt give you class. Class comes from within, not from external sources.

An Acronym Of What It Means To Be A Class Act C is for calm, courteous and in control.

People who have class carry themselves in a certain way. They stay calm under pressure, donʼt lose their temper, are respectful and use good manners. They donʼt use crude language, criticize or complain in public, and they donʼt interrupt others.

L is for living by high standards. Class acts set goals in both their career and personal life. They are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and push themselves beyond their limits to see how successful they can become. A is for above it all. Class acts take the high road and refuse to stoop to the level of their adversaries. They donʼt have to apologize for their unfortunate words because they know better than to give in to the heat of the moment. S is for self-respect, and respect for others as well. They donʼt gossip or say mean and petty things about others. They take every opportunity to make others feel good about themselves and appreciated. S is for self-confidence without being arrogant. Class acts understand their abilities and are not afraid to use them. You can develop confidence, just like any muscle or character trait, if youʼre willing to work hard. Class acts also increase the confidence of others. A is for accountability. Class acts take re-

sponsibility for their actions and results, whether itʼs a success or failure. C is for compassion. Classy people understand that helping someone up will never pull you down. Compassion is a vital part of class acts. Compassion feels and whispers, “Iʼll help.” Class acts really care. T is for trust. Truthfulness and integrity are the basis for trust. Classy people are trustworthy and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality. To me the most important five-letter word in business is T-R-U-S-T. In his book “The Success Principles,” my friend Jack Canfield lists “Be a Class Act” as Principle #55. What I found most intriguing are some of the reasons he lists as why being a class act helps you succeed. He writes: “People want to do business with you or become involved in your sphere of influence. They perceive you as

successful and someone who can expand their possibilities. They trust you to act with responsibility, integrity and aplomb. Class acts tend to attract people who are at the top of their game.” Thatʼs true in the game of life or sports. Class athletes have an edge over their opponents. Why? Their poise allows them to concentrate better. They exhibit better confidence to play to their potential. An added plus: classy athletes usually have the crowd behind them. So take a close look at your network of friends, co-workers, customers and so on. Are they class acts? Whether you realize it or not, they are a reflection of you. The good news is that you can change. Make a decision to recreate yourself as a class act and see what kind of people you start attracting. Do fewer things, but do them better. Change your behavior for the better. Raise the quality of your attitude. When you have a higher level of personal standards, you get better treatment from everyone around you.

Mackay’s Moral: A class act can say a lot without uttering a word.

#2 Mastering The Art Of Managing Twenty-five hundred years ago a new Chinese emperor took the throne of the Middle Kingdom. Because he was only 18, he called upon the court's wisest adviser. “O learned sage. O venerable counselor,” said the young emperor, “you advised my grandfather the emperor for many years. What is the single most important advice you can give me for ruling my kingdom?” And the adviser, who was the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius, replied, “First, you must define the problem.” Certainly sage advice – except most of us donʼt have a Confucius to consult. But we can learn plenty from studying the advice of top CEOs and business leaders.

For example, Anne Mulcahy, former Chairman and CEO of Xerox was asked by Fortune Magazine what was the best advice she had ever received in business. She said it occurred at a breakfast meeting in Dallas, to which she had invited a group of business leaders. One of them, a plainspoken, self-made, streetwise guy, came up to Mulcahy and said: “When everything gets really complicated and you feel overwhelmed, think about it this way. You gotta do three things. First, get the cow out of the ditch. Second, find out how the cow got into the ditch. Third, make sure you do whatever it takes so the cow doesn't go into the ditch again.” What a great management tip because when you break it down, it covers just about every situation. Iʼd like to share some other gems with you that will help you “define the problem.”

• Make your calendar your best friend.

As soon as you book an appointment or meeting, choose an appropriate date to prepare for it, and prepare a to-do list for that day. Allow sufficient time to gather and review all the information and material you might need. Take time to prepare so you donʼt have to waste time in despair!

• Don’t waste precious time fretting about things over which you have no control. Although taking control of the details and tasks in your life is essential to becoming an effective priority manager, there are things that occasionally pop up over which you have little or no control. When that happens, donʼt fight it; just do them and get it over with. • Manage the function not the paperwork. Remember your job is to manage a specific function within the company, whatever that may be. There might be a lot of paperwork that goes with the job, but don't let that distract you from your real responsibility. • Get out of your office. Management By

Walking Around (MBWA) does work. You make yourself more approachable. You get information first-hand. You find out what's really happening. The auto pioneer Henry Ford was once asked why he made a habit of visiting his executives when problems arose rather than inviting them to his own office. “I go to them to save time,” Ford explained, “and besides I've found I can leave their office a lot quicker than I can get them to leave mine.”

• Delegate the easy stuff. The things you

do well are the things to delegate. Hold on to those that are challenging and difficult. That is how you will grow.

• Don't get caught up in “looking good.”

Appearances can be deceiving. Don't try to act big. Donʼt exclude rank and file employees. And don't think you know it all. Do things in such a way that everyone can see that you are honest.

• Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself. • Open your ears and close your mouth.

Your associates, your employees, your suppliers, your customers all have something of value in what they have to say. Listen to the people around you. You will never learn what it is if you drown them out by talking all the time. Remember, the only thing that can come out of your mouth is something you already know. Shut up and learn.

• Practice what you preach.

To lead, you have to lead by example. Don't expect your people to work unpaid overtime if you leave early every day. Don't book yourself into a four star hotel on business trips and expect your employees to stay in the motel off the freeway.

Mackay’s Moral: When you manage to define the problem, you begin to manage.

#3 Street Smarts Put You On The Road To Success You learn how to be book smart in school, but you better not forget that you need to also be street smart. Thereʼs an old saying about how the “A” students in school end up working for the “B and C” students in life. Iʼve always been amused by that notion. I succeeded because I have street smarts. Here are some street-smart ideas that have worked for me over the years. If one or two of them work for you thatʼs terrific. IDEA #1: Take time – whenever possible – to think about important situations that arise

before taking any action. Unexpected problems come up in life. No matter what you are hit with without warning, memorize these six words – I want to think about it. All my life Iʼve seen people react instantly to events that took them by surprise, and they opened their mouths and really hurt themselves. So practice: I want to sleep on it! I want to think about it! You wonʼt be sorry. IDEA #2: Agreements prevent disagreements. Whenever you have a meeting of real importance, summarize your understanding with a brief note back to the other party. I guarantee this will save you from a lot of “he said/ she said” … “I thought you meant” … or “We never talked about that.” Nail it down before it nails you. IDEA #3: Leaks donʼt just come from faucets. Just remember that the walls have ears, or as I now say, the world has ears. Donʼt discuss private important business or personal matters where it can be overheard by other parties. Many deals have gone down in elevators. Smart phones and recording devices are everywhere. IDEA #4: Always let someone else set the table for you. Let other people talk you up. It will carry a lot more weight. The sound carries further when someone else blows your horn. IDEA #5: Dial up your telephone skills. Never, never just leave your name when you call someone. Always leave the exact timeframe you can be reached to avoid playing telephone tag. Also, whenever you do reach a customer, client, VIP or key person in your network, immediately ask them, “Is this a good time to talk?” Donʼt blow a deal just because of inconsideration. Iʼve received calls all my life where I was preoccupied, and the caller had no chance to be successful. If you have an assistant who takes your calls, you will always make a solid impression if your assistant says that you are expecting their call. Lastly, and this is a tough one, but try to only take phone calls at a specific time of day. This is a huge time saver. Of course, there will always be VIP exceptions. IDEA #6: Donʼt be boring. Donʼt be predictable. Donʼt be dull. Put some creativity into your

The things you do well are the things to delegate. Hold on to those that are challenging and difficult. That is how you will grow. life and business. For example, I have various types of letters that I use on a regular basis. I have unique and creative letters of Congratulations and Thank You, and then I always add a personal message to them. I do a report card letter where I list ten or so items and rank each item A+, assuming they deserve it. Iʼm a big proponent of putting a smile on peopleʼs faces, whether itʼs with creative gifts or personal notes. IDEA #7: Check out who is attending events to which Iʼm invited. I often call the person in charge of an event to try and get a list of attendees and where they will be seated. The cocktail hour is usually not long enough to greet more than 25 percent of the crowd. However, if you have the seating chart, you know the exact table number, plus whoʼs attending. Then you can zero in on the contacts you want to make. If you canʼt get a list in advance, arrive early and check the name tags to see who will be there. IDEA #8: Many times in life when you are faced with a difficult situation, you should try and apply this philosophy: If you can afford to buy your way out of a problem, you donʼt have a problem. IDEA #9: Call people who have experienced a setback, demotion or personal tragedy. Everyone calls people on the way up, but not so often on the way down. You will always be remembered for your kindness.

Mackay’s Moral: A student of life considers the world a classroom.

The Latest Anti-Aging Secrets the W Wo orld iss T Taalking About: Ionized W Waater and Inffrared Jade Sauna By Adrienne Papp

Adrienne Pap pp is a re recognized journalist who has written fo for many publications including Savoir, Beverly H Hiills 90210, Malibu Beach and Celebrity Societyy, among many otherrs. She is the President and CEO of Los Angeles/N New Yo York-based publicity comp mpany Atlantic Publicityy. Adrienne writes about world trends, the latest anti-aaging discoveries, and interviews celebrities. Most of us have heard about the possible cancer-causing properties of plastic water bottles. As the sun heats up the plastic, it releases toxins into the pure, natural water that otherwise would be healthy for for you. Our body also retains waterr, which shows up as extra pounds, but for o the purpose of hydrating the cells and removing toxicity that is stored mainly in fatcells. Howeverr, regular water molecules do not have an easy time penetrating the cells to detoxify them, which partially explains why so many of us have a hard time losing weight, or get rid of excess water retention.

At the Living Wellness Centerr, people can slim down, detox and rejuvenate in a fe ew hours, transfo orming their body completely. Most of us however chose to own the Infrared Jade Sauna, due to its size, mobility, and a plug-in-and-go solution, and have the convenience of rejuvenation at home. The Ionized Alkaline Water System not only provides healthful and hydrating waterr, it also eliminates your water delivery service, ridding you of plastic bottle waste and monthly bill payments. With these two new technologically advanced devices you have a comprehensive health maintenance system. “Our Infrared Jade Sauna is unique,” says Joel. “As opop posed to other solutions, it uses the farr,, mid and near wavelengths, so you’re getting detoxed at the cellular level. In conjunction with the healing effe ects of Jade Stones, the modality is so strong that you not only get detoxed, but your circulation is imim proved, and pain and other ailments are effe ectively reduced. It’s completely rejuvenating.” “Aftter having used both technologies, all of my health issues, including fibromyalgia, disappeared completelyy,” adds Trish. “When these treatments are combined, the results are dramatic and instantaneous,” explains Joel. “ These devices do wonderss ffor or your health, even with serious conditions like diabetes, autism, ADHD and cancerr, which can’t survive in in an analk alkaline state.” Trish and Joel are now off ffer ering these products to create a healthier world. The Ionized Alkaline Water machine is considered to be the most powerful anti-aging therapy on the planet, and is highlyy effe ective in maintaining proper body pH as the water molecule is split through electrolysis, breaking the H2O configuration into OH- + H+ molecules. The negatively-charged OH- molecule is then attracted to positively-charged acids and free radicals in the bodyy, eliminating toxins. Using this water on a regular basis equals getting a complex detox every day, reducing things like free radicals and inflammation, well-known causes of most diseases.

How do we overcome this ongoing dilemma in a natural way without taking weight loss products that might have unhealthy side eff ffec ects? The simple answer came from Trish Fetter and Joel Davis of Living Wellness Centerr, who off ffer er cutting edge new technologies fo or improved health through the benefits of detoxification, pain relieff, anti-aging, optimum hydration, stress relieff, weight loss and and homeostasis homeostasis. Jade stones have been used in Eastern cultures and in New Zealand for o thousands thousan of years ffor or their inherent healing properties. The Infrared Jade Sauna, using precious Jade, is the perfe ect non-surgical solution to remove unwanted fat, cellulite and loose, aging skin. This new w,, holistic holist approach to wellness also helps with pain relief and calorie burning, besides detoxification and excess water loss. Adding to it Ionized Alkaline Water will result in a Red Carpet readyy, renewed and revitalized body in just a ffew ew days.

Another priceless benefit is that the ionized alkaline water can adjust your body pH to a healthy alkaline state. Most of us are constantly lowering our pH with a diet that raises the body’s acidity to unhealthily levels. “By maintaining the body in an alkaline state, you create a condition where cancer just can’t survive,” Joel says. “ Things like diabetes and acid reflux become non-issues once you reach a state of homeostasis.”

I am priviliedged to be invited to the Oscars every yearr, but our fast-paced society creates a problem that everyone has to deal with: stress. Stress makes us put on weight and fitting into that new ballgown, or tuxedo poses a challenge. Not anymore!

And now,, off to the Oscars: slim and fit, thanks to the benefits of my portable sauna and the healthy water from my alkaline machine. I am free to enjoy a healthier and happier me that even the camera can see!

many of us indoors, staying inside might keep us warm, but it also can expose us to 4 powerful indoor allergens capable of triggering a variety of cold/flu-like symptoms. If you experience more than nine days of continuing congestion, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes and nasal drip, you likely are reacting to the presence of dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander, or mold in your home, office or school. Especially in the inner city where populations are dense, these allergens are present and must be addressed.

10 TIPS TO CONTROL YOUR INDOOR ALLERGY SYMPTOMS 1. Mold inspection: The first step to control allergy symptoms is inspect for inside mold. Common places to find it: shower curtains, wallpaper, carpets, sink and the drain. Mold is easily cleaned with bleach and detergent. 2. Cockroach hunt: Studies show cockroach allergens to be present in at half of inner city homes and nearly three-quarters of inner city schools, and donʼt have to be alive to trigger respiratory problems. Dust containing molecules of crushed carcasses cause problems for humans. Exterminators can discover and clean out hidden colonies. Any nesting areas where cockroaches may have traveled must be thoroughly cleaned. 3. Dry up dust mites: Keep your indoor humidity at 50 percent or lower, as higher humidity breeds dust mites. You can purchase a humidity gauge for about $5. 4. Filter out animal dander: If you have a pet allergy, likely you will need allergy medications until you consult with an allergist if you want to be desensitized. Meanwhile, a small HEPA air purifier placed in each room keeps airborne dander from spreading through the house. Mice and other fur-bear

Rootology Herbs

ing pests living in or under the house must be searched for and removed. 5. Get symptom relief: A mixture of sinusChinese herbs like Rootology, temporarily halt most allergy symptoms in about 20 minutes and control winter cold/flu symptoms. 6. Eat an immune-building diet: Eliminate foods that weaken the immune system: processed or packaged. Blackberries and blueberries boost the immune system and also important are multi-vitamin supplements and digestive enzymes to help you access more nutrients in the food you consume. 7. Get sufficient sleep: Our immune system is very "sleep-driven" and allergies are precipitated by weakened immunity. 8. Stay hydrated: When youʼre dehydrated dry nasal mucosa and can develop microscopic cracks in the nasal lining, making it easy for allergens to enter the bloodstream. 9. Use the HOT setting: Wash bedding in hot water; 130 degrees neutralizes allergens. 10. Wash your face and hands: If there is dander, mold, or dust on your face or hands, chances are good you will inhale it. LA STYLE — trending NOW! by Summer de Almeida

Treaure Hunting For Fabulous EVERYTHING! TIME to “Spring Clean” your beauty routine and

change around the products you use? Most women find themselves at a deadend when it comes to make-up and skincare routines. The general way of thinking is— ... If it isn’t broken... why fix it... BUT, sticking to the same make-up and skincare routine can translate into

you not looking as youthful as you could. Not only do the seasons require different colors and skin protection, but as we age our skin requires us to be open minded about being adventurous when it comes to looking healthy and youthful. Most certainly, at 20, 30, or 40 your signature look drew rave reviews and plenty of attention. But could it be time to expand your range of new products that may offer even better results? You be the judge.

MONTHLY SKIN NO-NO Is it bad to sleep with make-up on? Yes, itʼs REALLY bad. A recent survey showed that one third of women sleep with their make-up on at least two nights a week. Sleeping with make-up clogs your pores which makes our pores look gross! As we age, the collagen in our skin decreases. Translation: our skin and pores are greatly affected and donʼt bounce back like they did when we were younger. Skipping our nighly cleansing routine with quality skin care products is beauty suicide. If you are TOO tired to stand in front of your sink and spend the time to properly clean your skin— at least use make-up removal pads. They are fast and convenient and get the job done. YES to Carrots has incredible make-up remover wipes that easily remove face and eye make-up with just a few swipes. No need to use one wipe after another. YES to Carrots gets the job done with one.

The ABC’s of Contouring

Don't have time to get your nose done before an upcoming Spring vacay? Hmm. What if I told you there are 3 THINGS that can make you look just as good and sometiems even better than plastic surgery in just 5 MINUTES for under $100? THERE IS and they would be my ABC TEAM: • Angled Blush Brush • Bronzer • Cream For Highlighting These three make a wonderful team and do works of wonders bringing out your facial structure and features. If you're looking to intensify your cheekbones or narrow out your nose — these three products will be your new best friends!

and dirt. Itʼs not only your skin that needs a deep cleansing BUT your make-up brushes as well. If you arenʼt doing a deep clean on your brushes at least once a week — you're literally rubbing disgusting dirt and oil into your face and clogging all of your pores — the very same pores you spent time cleaning! YUCK!! Itʼs life or death that at least once a week you clean your make-up brushes with a gentle shampoo — it should only take about 10-20 minutes depending on how many brushes you are cleaning. Then, a couple of hours for them to dry afterwards. It makes sense to spend the time cleaning your brushes, rather than spend the time and money visiting your dermatologist to find out why your skin is constantly breaking out — like when you were 14.

Patent-pending formula defends delicate eye area from skin-aging damage while reducing the appearance of dark circles with the light-diffusing mica mineral. $45 at Nordstrom stores; QVC.com, Birchbox.com, supergoop.com

THINK PINK

That's the motto for this Spring and Summer 2014. It's all about the PINK LIPS and PINK CHEEKS ladies — for daytime. No more dark colors. Reds and browns are going nocturnal for the season, meaning those colors should only be seen on your lips in the evening. Once you put away the dark makeup, it's time to go to your closet (or Bloomingdale's) and get out the floral's and pastels! That's right...they're back in season. There's nothing more perfect than a cute floral skirt and a pair of strappy heels to go with it!

Defining Beauty Robert Moran Doctor of Glam

Celebrity Hair & Make-up Artist

This Hollywood make-up trend has been going strong for a while. It will finally be popular with our Spring and Summer Brides which collectively as a group generally stays away from beauty trends considered fleeting. An amazing element about CatEye liner is that while it’s so popular now, it is a RETRO look as well — very classic in photos and works brilliantly with almost any wedding gown. We saw a lot of Cat-Eyes on this year’s Spring 2014 Runways, so if you are pondering a Cat-Eye look for your wedding you will be right on your fashion target.

Make-up Trend #2 — Pretty Pink Lips Notice Berry and Baby Pink by RM Cosmetics were a big make-up trend on the Spring 2014 Runway. No doubt pink will be another Bride favorite this spring and summer. Not only is pink less committal and more flexible than red, but pink is fun, romantic and glam like any Bride and wedding should be.

Make-up Trend #3 — Nude Complexion On the Runway: clean face, no make-up bare look with a dab of concealer, bit of bronzer and touch of blush. This summer expect to see bare faces everywhere. A soft and dewy look is a sharp contrast to the dramatic GLOW created with highly-reflective light creams and powders by RM Cosmetics. Prep skin for a bare look with a good cleansing, followed by a non-manual exfoliation (enzyme or acid mask is perfect). Mist with a hydrating toner/tonic (alcohol free) and finish with a super-hydrating moisturizer. Use a RM Cosmetics sheer foundation or thin out a full/ medium coverage one with moisturizer and apply to even skin tone; mix a little illuminating cream with your moisturizer; apply to the top of cheek bones. Dust the tiniest amount of loose powder across your nose and your forehead to avoid an oily looking shine. Dr. Glam Clutch Secrets. I dip a Q-tip in RM Cosmetics Foundation, wrap it in a tissue and tuck it in my client’s clutch for easy touch-up. You always want to be camera ready. Last summer the artist attended the enormous July pow-wow in Taos, New Mexico. She says... “I appreciated that I was a guest as I took photos and listened to a very visual story—a story of people who come together to celebrate, to commemorate and to remember. From the beginning of time, men and women have created ceremonies and rituals to commemorate particular moments of victory or loss, beauty or pain. These celebrations are as important as the seasons, for they mark time by adding punctuation to our lives. My Native American paintings are a series or works inspired by the places and people I met. Drawing on fascination with myth, history, and art practices from both the East and West, international Korean-American painter Rimi Yang has synthesized a uniquely compelling visual lexicon with diverse influences that explore the dualities of the human experience and how the world is universally entwined. Whether figural or abstract, Yang is known for her intense enthusiasm for vibrant color, which is manifested in her figurative and her abstract paintings and easily recognized in elated brushstrokes. Celebrating the emotional duality that exists in life, Yang rejoices in the confusion mankind creates attempting to order the un-orderable, and she reyls on her way with colors and a brush to explain the unexplainable. Her paintings are instinctive balancing acts of contrasts. Yang spent her childhood in Japan before moving to the United States in 1986, and she trained extensively in the U.S. and abroad, bringing forth her deep appreciation of art and classical technique to each piece she produces. She has been exhibited internationally and is the recipient of numerous awards. Rimi Yangʼs work will ultimately inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize you. ODELIA & ORNELA SAMUELS

FIG

Fig and Olive

and Olive is high on our list of top notch restaurants. High ceilings...pure nirvana, sexy music and olive oil smell... we couldnʼt wait to swirl our tongues on the evenings delights. Menus were set in front of us with great finesse by Chef Gabriel who informed us that nothing is cooked with cream or butter; only olive oil. HEALTHY! We started with the Roasted Beets which made us a slave to the delectable ingredients of goat cheese, and scallion; Octopus A La Gallega— thinly sliced braised octopus, marinated bell pepper, heirloom potatoes, pimento lemon dressing; Fig and Olive Salad— fig, apple, manchego, gorgonzola dolce, tomato, walnut, olive, romaine mixed, scallion, fig balsamic, Arbequina olive oil; and the 3 Crostinis: 1. Goat cheese, caramalized onion chive 2. Manchego, fig, marcona almond 3. Salmon, ricotta, avocado, pimenton, tuna, tomato, chive. Appetizers to die for! Entrees served were: Primavera Lobster Risotto— grilled Maine lobster, arborio rice, asparagus, lobster stock, caramelized carrots, cherry tomato, shallot baby, zucchini and snap peas. Oh how those lobster chunks were huge, the second they hit our mouths we had a foodgasm! The Filet Mignon— Painted Hills Farm 8oz grass fed beef marinated with caramelized shallot and chive mashed potato; super tender and sexy, made us submissive with every bite. Dessert began with a Cheese Platter of 5 exquisite cheeses... each one seducing us: Fromage De Chevre (goat), Gorgonzola Dolce (cow), Robiola (cow), Manchego (sheep),

Truffle Boschetto (cow/sheep), then onto the Caramelized Apple Tart— a crisp puff pastry with caramelized apples and vanilla ice cream and the Warm Chocolate Souffle – candied orange and vanilla ice cream which was GODLY! Fig and Olive is a tres trendy place, big yet cozy, with a salad bar of interesting people from businessmen to hipsters and models. Reasonable prices, great for families, a date or meeting potential lovers ;)).

Fresh, hot, lemony spread was served with delish toasted bread. The California King Salmon oooohhh.... tomato and cucumber salad, dill sun chokes, horseradishsorrel. The deliciousness never stopped! MARI VANNA

WOW! As we walked into Mari Vanna we felt as if we

walked into a live Russian dollhouse! It was like entering a beautiful fairytale with waitresses dressed in flowery authentic Russian dresses, Russian dolls and sculptures on numerous shelves, birdhouses and bookshelves filled with Russian literature. We were graciously seated and offered a variety of Mari Vanna's Famous House Infused Vodka. We tried the Cucumber and Dill and the Seaberry — both very interesting and fun. For cocktails we had the Kalinka Malinka Martini – house infused Raspberry vodka, white peach puree, fresh lime juice, and fresh raspberries – magnifique!!! Our enchanting waitress Nellie brought our appetizers: The Ukranian Borscht – it was majestic, truly splendid, and it made our stomachs warm and happy, an absolute must! The Svekolnik— chilled beet soup with cucumber, potato and radish topped with scallion and dill; Russian Country Salad — tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, radish, red onions, served with black bread; Handmade Potato Vareniki – Russian dumplings sautéed onions and sour cream — the second they entered our mouths we couldn't stop licking our wet, red lips; and the Assorted Pirozjki — one with Cabbage; one with rice, egg and scallion. For our main course we enjoyed the Fish Kotletki — lightly breaded fish patties served with green peas and homestyle potatoes, and the Golubtzi Stuffed Cabbage—veal, rice, in a vegetable broth served with sour cream... all were insanely delicious. For desserts we ordered the ultra Handmade Chocolate Truffles which gave us an instant 4 chocolategasms in a row! YES they were that GOOD! And, of course, the Medovik — traditional Russian layered honey cake which infused us with serious pleasure jolts. Mmmm... Itʼs the ultimate and sexy restaurant to relax, drink, eat and play.
