Quack Quack

TWO CHICKS AND A DUCK By Jackie Seely & Suzanne Takowsky

(OR IS IT A DRAKE?...) MAJOR QUACKS IN THE DUCK DYNASTY Why was Phil Robertson interviewed by GQ magazine? Yes, Phil is a multi-millionaire swamp angel, but isnʼt GQ magazine about fashionable, handsome, suave, sophisticated, gentlemen? Way, way, WAY out here in the wild, wild, WILD west — in the hills — Beverly Hills California of course — when we think of GQ magazine we think of a red carpet cutie like George Clooney. NOT Big Foot. What next? PEOPLE magazine voting Phil “The Sexiest Man Alive”? Geez Louise. Itʼs not that we donʼt like hunky men with hair on their chests. And, maybe a little strategically placed stubble on their faces... But GQ magazine is the last place on earth we thought weʼd see an interview with a sasquatch! Could Duck Dynasty be the dawn of a new version of the Beverly Hillbillies? If so, the sweet innocent mountaineers of days gone by — the Jed, Jethro, Elly Mae and Granny we all loved — have been replaced by a bossy, mean-spirited, bible thumping, sanctimonious, know-it-all bigot who canʼt get enough of himself. And, doesnʼt know when to keep his mouth shut when asked a question or when giving off-the-cuff statements he is not equipped to answer. Phil might be a hillbilly from the backwoods of Louisiana (his claim to fame) but thatʼs no excuse to go stupid when the cameras stop rolling. On screen of course ... he can talk stupid all he wants because thatʼs what heʼs getting paid the BIG $$$$ to do. As God-loving Christians we are very sure when Jesus Christ died on the cross, he died FOR ALL MANKIND asking us to love, forgive, support, help and protect our brothers and sisters. Isnʼt that what the bible is all about? Isnʼt that what God and Jesus Christ are known for? Whatʼs scary to us isnʼt that Phil canʼt complete a sentence. NO! Whatʼs scary to us is there are millions of bigots who agree with Phil that when it comes to equality of human beings, people either have to fit the “mold” — or they are scum. Not quite as scary BUT still traumatizing to us was the pair of womenʼs slippers we saw in Walmart with Philʼs face and huge beard (fake fur) that drags on the ground when you walk. SEXY NOT. Even though we donʼt watch Philʼs show, we doubt viewers have seen a pulpit in his house; maybe, a few rifles, shotguns, pistols and hunting knives. And, we are also sure Philʼs loosely translated bible scripture is not word-for-word from the bible. As we recall the words anus and vagina were never used in any sermon by Jesus Christ. BUT what is written in the Bible word-for-word is... “love your neighbor as yourself.” NOT love your neighbor as yourself as long as he or she believes what you believe! WAIT. Itʼs the flu season. Could Phil have caught a bad case of the “BIRD” flu or maybe a bad case of the “Convenient Christianity” flu? Anybody have any “cure” for a bad case of “BIRD” flu or “Convenient Christianity” flu? PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Pass the remedy onto Phil, and anybody else you run into that has lost an ability to think because their brains have been sucked out of their skulls from the “BIRD” flu or the “Convenient Christianity” flu. As much as weʼd like to say it ainʼt so… it seems the gigantic three foot hairball underneath Philʼs chin has drained vital brain cells out of his self-proclaimed “white trash” skull. Sadly, the after-effects seem to have left his dim-witted thought process as desolate as his reality wasteland. A Quick Question For Phil. Dude, what the DUCK were you thinking by spilling every random thought that popped into your head during that GQ interview? People who watch your show (and we know plenty cuz weʼre from a hick town in Utah that has tons of fowlloving hunters) and they donʼt recall you saying trashy comments on air. And where the hell were your handlers while you were speaking with an alien tongue? You never heard a black man or woman complain about toiling hour after hour and day after day and year after year in the fields to make white landowners rich while they lived in horrific poverty? Or having

10 // bhtmag.com //

the no-nuts to intimate gays are degenerates. Dude, do you have any idea how stupid you sound? We all have moments when we lose touch with our thoughts and spit out a thing or two we later regret. But dude, your desperate need to share went on and on and on and on for 100 pages! Too bad someone didnʼt have a little Duck tape handy to close your mouth and end your need to ramble. Half of America loves that frog eating puss of yours. No need to blur our vision of perfection with off-the-cuff, ludicrous comments that interrupted the spirit-filled holiday Christmas and Christianity vibe of: “God Bless Us Everyone” — something men, women and children throughout the world deserve to hear and believe. But letʼs keep things in perspective. Thereʼs little doubt Philʼs unacceptable and uneducated remarks had been simmering on the back burner just waiting to be unleashed at the drop of a hat or GQ interview. Weʼre not talking rocket scientist or Nobel Peace Prize winner. For those NOT-IN-THE-KNOW a duck call whistle (responsible for Philʼs bulging bank account) is used to lure a duck in so a hunter can blow its head off. Weʼre not sure about this cuz weʼre just two chicks, but isnʼt it kind of wimpy for a guy to have to blow a whistle to

seduce a sitting duck in for the kill? Just askinʼ… When it comes to Quacked-Up entertainers why canʼt they do their gig and go home. And shut up. And roll in the bucks. And bask in the glory. And keep their opinions to themselves. Why is it so important for Quacked-Up entertainers to use a public platform to let the world know what they think? Or, is it thunk? Why do they think or thunk we care? Most of us have enough personal crap to occupy us for 12 years. So, if you are a Quacked-Up desperado entertainer and feel the need to vocalize personal views to an audience, gather friends and family around the kitchen table and purge yourself dry. We donʼt need additional nonsense input unless, youʼre Kathy Griffin or Chelsea Handler. Period. Nobody else. PERIOD. Bottom Line: Is what you have to say for the greater good of mankind, or a bad case of uncontrollable blow hard, narcissistic grandstanding? Not YOU, but public opinion will be the judge. The jury. And the executioner. Sara Palin was quoted as saying she was sick of the intolerants. And we couldnʼt agree more. With Phil tossing in his two cents worth in the mutha-of-all-mutha rants, itʼs apparent nothing is worse than an ignorant intolerant. Yes, we are entitled to free speech, but does free speech include malicious and humiliating comments about others? We see it as a step backward in our goal to unite all people from every walk of life in peace regardless of their sexual orientation, religious beliefs or racial heritage. Until we find it in our hearts to abide by the bibleʼs and respect and accept others for who they are… we cannot call ourselves believers in God, or in the teachings of Jesus Christ. QUACK. QUACK. QUACK.

BASED in Sausalito, California, in itself a popular habitat for wildlife both marine and airborne, awardwinning tour operator Wild Planet Adventures (http://www.wildplanetadventures.com/) guides guests on paths rarely traveled when it comes to meaningful interaction with rare and exotic wildlife. This assures that rather than game viewing as a random occurrence, the drama is plotted against what’s actually happening within the ecosystems that the elusive animals frequent. Since 1991 its wildlife-centric tours have attracted animal enthusiasts worldwide who value the company’s carefully charted explorations into raw nature, assuring that its guests have a front row and center and nearly always private viewings of “Nature, red in tooth and claw…” Following a philosophy that interacting with and deciphering nature has the power to transform lives, tours are conducted in Belize, Borneo, Brazil, Costa Rica, Galapagos, India, Laos, Panama, Peru, Thailand, and Zambia. Knowing that ‘seeing is believing’ and often the catalyst that drives one to experience a phenomenon firsthand, Wild Planet Adventures has recently rebuilt and enhanced its high resolution website showcasing the world’s most exotic, endangered and wonderful wildlife. Inside viewers are treated to high-definition, largeformat photo and video galleries of the creatures in the wild, linked to the specific trips where you may experience a personal encounter with these incredible creatures. “With eye-popping photographs we’ve been able to get viewers as close as possible to real travel moments and the exhilaration of authentic wildlife encounters,” says Josh Cohen, Wild Planet Adventures founder and owner. “We’ve used as many authentic photographs as we could on the new website, submitted directly by our travelers and guides. There will also be upcoming photo contests for travelers to submit their photos, with winning photos published on our website and our annual catalog.” For those with a penchant for unusually weird and wonderful wildlife, there’s a special tab that lists the strangest of animals, where they can be seen on each trip, and even the likelihood of sightings. On this completely re-designed website visitors can cross-reference destinations and wildlife they’d like to see. “Our new website provides substantial detail in a pleasing format that’s like taking a journey itself. You’re not overwhelmed by information the minute you visit the home page,” promises Cohen. “In the process of traveling through our site, you learn more about the world’s most amazing wildlife and where they can be seen.” Throughout the site the emphasis is about telling stories about the destinations, the wildlife, and the people, all relayed by stunning photographs. A delightfully playful story of a meerkat and a lemur traveling together is told through photos as a unique way of introducing a revolutionary new travel companion-finder for single travelers. And if you stumble upon a “page Not Found 404 Error” get ready for a funny surprise. Wild Planet Adventures also believes in giving back where and when possible. In addition to exclusive view

THE Moran Stanley Foundation set the

mood for holiday giving by sponsoring, Food on Foot, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity for underserved adults and children in Los Angeles. Food on Foot opened its doors in 1996 and began serving meals each Sunday in Hollywood rapidly gaining volunteers and financial support. On Sunday, December 15th over 200 people were fed and many received clothing from the efforts of the charity and the Morgan Stanley Foundation. The Food on Foot program also offers assistance in the transition to employment and life off the streets. What initially began as the distribution of meals from the trunk of a car, has grown through the dedication of its volunteer services for the homeless, disabled, elderly and low-income adults and children. Over a three week period, FOF competed against nine other California nonprofits and received the most online votes, winning a $10,000 grant for the Work for Food program through the Clearinghouse CDFI Challenge. A person for the organization said, “We're so grateful to everyone who voted daily and spread the word to friends, family, and colleagues. A special thanks to our friend and long time supporter, Neil Patrick Harris, who wrote, "So glad you won. So glad I could help. So glad you continue to do what you do." And a special thanks to Morgan Stanley Senior Vice President Graham OʼKelly for bringing together the Morgan Stanley Foundation and the Food on Foot organization as they combine their efforts to help people throughout the greater Los Angeles area achieve improved lives and futures. If you would like to volunteer with or donate to Food on Foot, please call 310-442-0088 or find them on the web: www.foodonfoot.org.

How To Make Difficult People

DISAPPEAR! PEOPLE and frustration can appear to go hand-in-hand when stress runs higher than usual. In our personal lives this is especially apparent around the holidays and during family events when circumstances dictate that we are going to be in the company of people who make us uncomfortable with their words and actions. This scenario can also happen at work where we may have difficult team members, clients or outside business associates who we must interact with in order to accomplish business-related goals and obligations.

There is little doubt that people and their many differences can be frustrating. Therefore, is it possible to find a way to make their difficult behavior disappear? 4 PROVEN METHODS THAT WORK!

Shift Your Focus. At work, you donʼt have to reassign “Diva Diane” or involve Human Resources when “Dropout Dan” is at it again. Shift your focus and your expectations. If you believe your days will be filled with drama, conflict and difficult people, guess what? Thatʼs what youʼll find and attract. Change the mindset of... “Her work isn’t bad” to... “Her work is pretty good.” Change your belief from one of dread to... “This might not be so bad.” This simple shift helps difficult behavior dissipate because your brain will automatically no longer seek opportunities to validate prior negative beliefs, or combative statements. Your brain operates like radar and takes your instructions well. If you tell your brain... “She’s a pain in the neck,” you subconsciously look for all the things

that emphasize and validate this belief. Start the new year with dedication to change the data you put in that computer called — your brain. Then, get ready. A miracle is about to happen right before your eyes. Avoid bribes and use “sprinkles.” In the first chapter of • Make Difficult People Disappear, Cybil, the main character is

faced with a need to bribe her son into accepting her compromise when the need to bake cookies didnʼt make it to her blackberry. Anyone who has been a child, or has a child knows about bribes and behavior modifications. In many cases, we train others how to treat us. Praise or a small reward often results in an equal, reciprocal positive action. Sprinkle some positive reinforcement on what others do that you like or admire. Be sincere. Stop looking for the goofs and screwups to “confirm” your judgment that someone is difficult or inept. Instead, find something, regardless of how small it may be—to offer praise. Sprinkle some praise around every chance you get. AND, donʼt fall over when you get some back.

Assign more accurate labels. We all hear conversations • differently, have varied view points and discern situations and

peopleʼs behaviors in distinctive ways. We do this because we look through our own LENS, so to speak; one reflective of our own personality and experiences. Through our lens, pictures we create of someone is captured, stored and labeled. This automatically happens because we live in a world of fast-moving information, constant requests and devices that ding, ring, and beep relentlessly begging for our attention. We simplify that information with “automated” labeling produced by our brains for easy reference and recall. Yet, research proves most “labels” we assign to others are wrong. In actuality they are “pre-conceived judgments” based on how we would behave or what we would do in the same situation. And we automatically do so without consideration for the fact that the other person is NOT you or I. What if the label we chose was “different” rather than “difficult”. Would someone who is say...“different” frustrate us as much as someone whom we have labeled “difficult”?

Let Intentions Count. At varied times, most of us feel like we live in a cruel and violent world. But realistically, not everyone is out to get us or has an ulterior motive. Not everyone means to cut us off on a freeway or sneak in to steal a parking space. Most parents do not possess the power to quite a screaming toddler who might have disrupted a dinner in our favorite restaurant, and no retail store would intentionally lose money by making a calculated decision to purposely run out of an item on “sale”—an item we wanted to buy for a special present. More times than not there is more to any story than meets the outside eye. Refuse to look or dig for mean-spirited actions from people. Donʼt anticipate bad results waiting in the wings. Automatically assume people mean well and are doing the best they can — at that moment. Expect good things to happen. Expect conversations, encounters, and relationships to be easy and breezy. And, if that doesnʼt work... start saying, “Well, bless your heart” more. It will make you smile and as if by magic, when youʼre looking for the good and smiling, you will find just that — much the same as when you are looking for the ... well ... bad, mean, negative, less than good. HOW TO LIVE FEARLESS SEVEN DAYS A WEEK By Thomas F. Greene

CHANGE isnʼt always easy, but incredibly itʼs not

complicated. All change requires is commitment and that is something ONLY you can do. Digging Deep — How To Live Fearless Seven Days A Week... is a 30 day commitment. Forget the obstacles, negatives and thoughts of self-doubt. Manifest your destiny. Take credit for changes you see. Each day commit to reading one chapter and reference the questions at the end. Each chapter is part of a process for recognizing awareness, seeing the fear, overcoming it. Here are key points to think about.

The Illusion of the Fear

Fear keeps us trapped in the confines of walls of thought. Those thoughts have been etched into our existence from a very young age. Along with the way we talk to people, aspects of our fear dictate many things: the type of person we date or marry, the jobs we seek out, how we react to strangers, our level of comfort communicating with others. From this perspective we see how our sense of security or unease manipulates the choices we make while at the same time creating what becomes our reality. Many of us have to walk through fear and perceptions of failure before we can let go and just be. We learn to see our pain and suffering is standing between us and the light that shines within. When fear is upon us, the light is lost.

Over Coming Fear

The action of what we do is more important than what we think. Saying “NO” to our worry while walking forward to the next step is overcoming the fear that controls us. If there is no good or bad, then there is no right or left to take. The journey is ahead in every step we take. Our minds are then open to the intellect that guides the stars, warms the sun, molds the mountains and oceans, while making the intellect of thought seem like a joke. Do not let thoughts of self-doubt, negativity or feelings of insecurity mask the moment. Everything that can be or will be is contained.. The essence of the moment is the only thing that ever is. Nothing can come close to the incredible brilliance that this flicker contains. If we believe in God and proclaim His love, then to know His strength and to feel His power can only be accomplished by embracing His PRESENCE. Presence is all there is. Everything else is a lie.

Fear is the catalyst that shows us what we do not know; reminds us to wake up and let go. What we are holding onto is a contemplation of what we think we know. If God is ubiquitous, itʼs obvious we canʼt know everything. What we do understand is a minuscule perception of everything our minds can and, may be able to comprehend. In holding onto that thought, we attempt to experience what we canʼt know. At the same time we are creating discord in our life by not allowing the thought process a consistent flow.

Awareness

Awareness is a state of being that allows us to be the observer of a thought. We have the ability to respond to life, not react to it. Most of us turn right on good and left on bad. That perception has been ingrained in our subconscious since we were children. It is demonstrated in our beliefs, actions and habits that create our today and tomorrow. If we look at human behavior, itʼs easy to see that most of us are kids pretending to be adults. We constantly have thoughts racing through our minds like a hamster spinning on a wheel. Those thoughts are the instruments responsible for our reality and destiny.

Kids International (MKI) celebrated its heroes at the WINGS AROUND THE WORLD - AFRICAN SAFARI GALA by honoring Gene Simmons, Shannon TweedSimmons, Nick and Sophie Simmons with the MEND Humanitarian Award; Sydney McDonnell who has hosted 13 MKI children received the HOPE Award and Mike Takac, VP of Domestic Sales at Warner Bros. was presented the LOVE Award for his corporate support. The star-filled gala included: Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Greg Louganis, Nia Peeples, Dawnn Lewis, Harvey Levin, Dorothy Lucey, Lou Diamond Phillips, Christopher Atkins, Mark Dacascos and others. MKI has changed the lives of over 1,200 children in over 54 countries and through Hometown Missions in the United States. MKI provides critical surgeries free to children who otherwise would not receive them due to lack of medical or financial resources; MKI offers training and research to assist communities in creating self-sustaining surgical programs. Mel Gibson, a supporter of the non-profit since its 2006 inception, said, “Going on a mission is like a reset button on your soul.” www.mendingkids.org

Seeing the Fear

Most people go through life being the emotion. We blame people and situations for how we feel. There is no analysis of where the emotion comes from internally, usually the blame is transferred to another person or an event. No person has the ability to make us happy, angry, sad, or upset. These are personal choices we make either consciously or likely subconsciously. Observing an emotion allows us to see it, but not get lost in being it. By visualizing, we can respond with presence, not react from past conditioning.

“Be the change you want to see in the world,” perhaps Gandhi and his quote makes us want to look at what is being ignored in our own lives. Because we do not want to obsess about failing, looking at our fears makes us uneasy instead of content in our truth. Picture a gymnast on the parallel or uneven bars performing the perfect “10” routine. The entire exercise is a balance of success or failure. Do we have the willingness to walk into our fear of failure in order to succeed? Are we ready to be that change the world is waiting for?

Thinking Without Fear

How often does a positive insight or inspiring idea come to mind? And in how short of a time thereafter do thoughts of worry, anxiety or failure shoot it down before you have time to thoroughly consider the idea? How much of our lifeʼs purpose is put to waste by countless imaginary scenarios of failure, embarrassment and worry? How often do we dream today, but dismiss it before we can fail tomorrow? Einstein said, “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” What if we had no fear of failure? What if we werenʼt afraid to look foolish? What if we didnʼt care what other people thought? What if, instead, we feasted on the discovery of trying to know what we donʼt know, go where we havenʼt gone, and be who we have never been?

The Hollywood Reporter Women In Entertainment Power 100 MANY

of the biggest names in entertainment gathered for The Hollywood Reporterʼs Women in Entertainment Awards breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel. At the event, two inner-city students in THR's Hollywood Mentorship program were awarded full scholarships to Loyola Marymount University. THR coproduces the mentoring program with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Los Angeles pairing leading women with underprivileged high school students. Each student receives a $10,000 scholarship to a college of their choice. Presenter Demi Lovato announced two mentees were each awarded four-year, full-paid scholarships to Loyola Marymount University — each a value of $200,000. The star-studded event celebrated the 22nd year for the Power 100 gathering. This year Oprah Winfrey was honored and received the leadership award named for former Paramount and 20th Century Fox Executive Sherry Lansing who took Sherry Lansing and Roberto Coin the stage to speak about Winfrey, referring to her as a personal idol. Maria Shriver, a close friend of Winfreyʼs spoke about the entertainment mogul and shared personal thoughts on how Winfrey forged a path to help people world wide. Shriverʼs funny and intimate introduction for Winfrey was a poem she wrote titled: “Becoming” which left a teary eyed Winfrey telling the crowd, "That beats a eulogy, I gotta tell you." As she dabbed her eyes she said, "You're still alive to hear it!" Not a dry eye in the room as story after story brought a clear vision of why Winfrey is revered throughout the world. Winfrey's inspirational speech ended with strong words encouraging everyone to use their own power for good works. "How do Oprah Winfrey is presented with the you use your power to elevate the 2013 Sherry Lansing Leadership Award life of somebody else?," she asked the crowd. Addressing Lansing and her long list of professional accomplishments Winfrey said, "You've got to be powerful, and I mean powerful in its true definition. My favorite definition of power is 'strength over timeʼ. You've got to know who you are and keep Oprah Winfrey and Maria Shriver at the THR Power 100 getting stronger by doing what all smart women do: we use our instincts. And I know that you did, time and time again," referring to how Lansing carved out a phenomenal career in a male-dominated industry, comparing the similarities to her own struggles as she has moved forward to make the OWN network successful. While A-listers dined, Jimmy Kimmel feasted on crowd pleasing jokes including describing the sold-out venue as a "sea of perfect blowouts," and, in a sassy nibble at the infamous MTV Video Music Awards where Kayne West jumped the stage like an atelope and mad crashed award-winner Taylor Swift grabbing the microphone from her... Kimmel stated to the rapper (who was in attendance) ... "Don't even try to take Oprah's award away." Donʼt worry Jimmy. Nobody can ever take Oprahʼs glory away from her. A New Year... A New You...

Start 2014 On A Health & Fitness Journey By Making Yourself A Priority In Your Own Life. WITH a new year comes a promise of an improved personal and professional agenda;

and an enlightened view of what it takes to make our lives run more smoothly. By many accounts, 2013 proved to be a challenge for most of us in one way or another. Of course, we recognize that some of the good or bad that flows in and out of our lives can be chalked up to luck, astrological flow, and how the chessboard of life makes certain nobody gets too comfortable, or stays too miserable for too long. And, though we might think we have the tiger by the tail our lives are not in our hands. In an instant everything in our world can change. No where is this more apparent than where our health is concerned: Daily exercise, healthy eating, reduced stress, plenty of sleep, no smoking, weight control — you know the drill. We cannot hope to bring these life-enhancing and life-prolonging necessities out of the suitcase ONLY when our backs are against the wall and we are in crisis mode. Necessities of life that contribute to good physical health and mental and emotional well-being can only emerge in full force, and with full effect as transformational elements, when we have made them priorities in our every day lives over an extended period of time. And, for those who have not paid much attention to good food, regular exercise and emotional and mental relaxation and regeneration WELL... you are seeing the effects of a life lived running on empty. But in this hectic world, with the constant pushing/pulling we have and a non-stop workload, WHO HAS TIME TO MAKE THEMSELVES A PRIORITY IN THEIR OWN LIFE? YOU DO! I know this sounds like a broken record, but hard scientific health research proves that quality of life depends on state of health. What good is a thriving business, big house, Mercedes in the garage, and bulging bank account if our bodies and minds are hanging on by a thread? Sleeplessness, no exercise, mental turmoil and physical exhaustion are our constant companions. AND, with ZERO down time we are helpless to stop this destructive cycle. Unfortunately, we have NO chance of making it through the bad and difficult of our lives without a reserve of inner strength, good health and as much cool, calm and unbridled serenity as we can muster. But we can — if we stay focused and determined— not just make it through 2014 — BUT make 2014 one of our best years. I know for some this goal seems unattainable. But regardless of where we are in our lives right now, we stand a better chance if we find ways to nurture the positive in order to counteract the negative. TODAY — right now in this first month of this new year, if you and I make a plan of action and stick to it — we might be surprised at the improvement we bring into our lives on many levels. And the starting point MUST be with our physical/emotional/mental well being. Running on physical, mental and emotional EMPTY leaves us with our backs against a wall and just waiting for fate to step in and lower the boom. My “A New Year… A New You…” January 2014 issue gets off the ground with YogaFit founder and fitness expert Beth Shaw. She started her business years ago, and recently opened a new yoga fitness studio on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles. Beth turned a vision into an international success health/fitness formula by creating one of the most wellknown yoga training programs in the world. According to Beth, yoga helps put us in charge of our own health and fitness by strengthening and unleashing every natural healing life force within our bodies. Those dedicated to the practice of yoga experience a commanding change in their physical, mental and emotional state unsurpassed by other standard forms of exercise. From A-list celebrities, yoga enthusiasts, recognizable sports stars, noted medical practitioners and regular folks just like you and I who are looking to improve our health… Bethʼs specialized YogaFit classes and training programs are invaluable when it comes to bringing vitality, strength, motivation, determination, fitness and clarity back into our lives. Yoga is for everyone, any age and at any level of fitness, and as Beth says… “Any body is a yoga body, and if you can breathe… you can practice yoga.”

In addition to YogaFit classes, Beth is a best-selling author and her fitness DVDs and soldout health/fitness/wellness seminars improve all areas of our lives through yoga offers. Her philosophy is helping people achieve greater levels of fitness and good health while encouraging environmental awareness and educating people on the importance of a lifestyle filled with eco-conscious choices. Bethʼs goals extend to her love of animals. As one of LAʼs most noted animal rescue advocates, she works tirelessly with animal organizations throughout Los Angeles with an “Adopt Donʼt Shop” mantra of rescuing animals who deserve better lives. Reflecting on her success Beth says... "Business without a greater focus than profit is pointless.” There is little doubt if we want to go into 2014 looking for a better life, we have to take the initiative to make it happen. Letʼs begin 2014 with a commitment to make ourselves a priority in our own lives. We have no choice but to take care of ourselves, and stay healthy as long as possible. We canʼt afford to have our bodies break down with illness, or our mental state become fragmented with all the stress, emotional clutter, upheaval that invades us on a regular basis. Yes, some people are disciplined enough to make a health and fitness commitment and stick with it. I am not one of them. I need all the help I can get. The fabulous part of my job as owner of the magazine is I am blessed to be able to surround myself with experts whose day-to-day is the business of beauty, health and fitness. What they write I read. What they say I listen to. What they do so expertly, I get them to help me do on a level I am comfortable to be able to work writh. Some how, some way, their words of wisdom change my thinking, and I am reborn with a new and improved mindset I never had before. Or, would have been able to accomplish without a little help from “my friends”. Beth has proved to be a dynamic force in my own life. It is through her yoga classes, seminars and networking events I have learned much about my health and inner-well being; the most important is I have to take the time — make the time — to take care of myself. YogaFit is hosting a health/fitness/wellness networking day on January 25th at the YogaFit studio on Robertson Boulevard just blocks from the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills. I will be there are well as my friends and family. I encourage all of you who are interested in improving your lifestyle for the betterment of your health to attend. I guarantee that what you hear from the experts on hand will totally change your outlook on life, health, beauty and fitness. BETH: “Good health is our most valuable asset. Any actions we take should be geared toward bringing ourselves into a greater state of health and balance. At YogaFit we link poses with breathing. That entails moving and breathing at the same time. We work on the traditional group exercise model of warm-up, workout and cool down. Everything we do is safe and geared towards not only getting people in shape, but making certain what they do heals and nurtures their bodies. We warm-up with invigorating, energizing poses that strengthen the core and work the entire body to get the energy moving. In the work phase we hold poses longer to build strength and work at balancing postures. In the cool down phase we do meditation, and we stretch the body. With regards to the anti-aging effects of yoga ... yoga makes you look younger because it improves circulation, respiration and digestion. Practicing yoga stimulates all energy points in your body and you release stress and tension, lowering your blood pressure, reducing your cortisol levels (the stress hormone) all these things combined : the physical and mental benefits leave you looking and feeling younger. I do a headstand every day. Both headstands and backbends are incredible anti-aging tools to bring back a more youothful appearance.”

SKINNY FAT... the new “you look old” catch phrase. Women shouldn’t worry about wrinkles on their faces... it’s the loose, hanging flesh on their arms that give their age away! STRONG IS THE NEW SEXY. Thin bodies with flabby arms, legs and stomachs are... OUT! 26 // bhtmag.com //

“Certainly, there are fads when it comes to health, beauty and fitness. Someone is always coming up with something that guarantees fast, miraculous results, and most don’t deliver what they promise. Anti-aging that truly works requires an ongoing dedication to taking care of your health. And, exercise is a huge part of staying healthy. Yoga, is a 6,000-year-old science and physical practice. The components of yoga reduce stress and tension by connecting you to your self-stimulating energy center. This connection balances your body and mind. The result is that you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Yoga gets you into better physical shape as it develops your awareness in making healthier food choices. Yoga relieves stress by calming your inner self. All these things and more fight the aging process. The practice of yoga expands and improves your life drastically.” — Beth

Scientific Research Proves It Takes 30 Days For A Habit To Form THAT IS IT. We must stay committed to our new health and fitness program for ONE WEEK. Then, slide into WEEK TWO in which we acknowledge our newfound accomplishments, congratulate ourselves and bask in the limelight we are sticking to our goal. With increased confidence about the changes we see in our physical, emotional and mental well-being, we move into WEEK THREE with ease, recognizing this is NOT just another failed attempt at another New Year resolution gone bad. During WEEK THREE we begin to see light at the end of the tunnel as many positive physical and mental changes occur. Maybe we are resenting the world a little less. Possibly we are sleeping better, eating an apple here, or a salad there and losing unwanted pounds. And maybe… just maybe… we are starting to feel more like a human being and less like a draggy, old, beaten down work horse. Any change is good no matter how small as long as itʼs going in the right direction. And, if we stick to the program we have mapped out for change — WEEK FOUR will breeze by and we will discover weʼve formed an incredibly beneficial “TAKE CARE OF ME” habit. And itʼs a habit that our bodies and minds will not only crave, but will thank us for in the form of improved health, stress reduction and mental clarity. BETH: Sometimes we adults forget that our children are also in need of body and mind balancing. At YogaFit we offer classes for children all ages. Although the classes are fun-filled, we keep in mind the importance of helping our little ones achieve the same improved body, mind and emotional health that we adults need to balance our lives. Children live in the same hecic, non-stop environment we do, and most time we forget that our fast paced lifestyles also take a toll on them.” Beth has spent time in India and Asia studying yoga. She is certified in many fitness disciplines, and has been a trained Yoga Therapist since 1994, as well as holding a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Nutrition. The success of the YogaFit brand in addition to the new, state of the art flag ship fitness studio on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, boasts the largest yoga training school in the world. YogaFit has trained more than 200,000 instructors on six continents to teach the finely-tuned details of the YogaFit concept to corporations, fitness clubs, private gyms and workout establishments. Bethʼs entrepreneurial and innovating spirit has also launched numerous health and fitness trends including, YogaFit Sweat, YogaLean and the popular YogaButt. As a regular contributor to a number of local, national and international beauty, health and fitness magazines isuch as Time, LA Times, USA Today, Entrepreneur, SELF, FIT and the Yoga Journal, Beth is a frequent guest speaker at universities and corporations discussing Green initiatives. She currently serves on the canfitpro Advisory Panel. In addition to a calm, peaceful workout environment, Beth has also created another amazing sight in the YogaFit studio; a fabulous art studio where incredible art pieces by talented, multi-media artists grace the walls lending a breathtaking sense of peace while classes are taught. But all is not just for show. Beth graciously gives up wall space not only to support and encourage artists by showcasing their work, but with each piece of art that is sold, a portion goes to non-profilt animal resuce and environmental organizations. Seeing is believing, and among the animal rescue organizations Beth supports are Last Chance For Animals, and just recently, Beth adopted a loving dog from Much Love Animal Rescue in Los Angeles. continued page 28

YOUR LIFE

CHANGES WHEN YOU PRACTICE

YOGA

ANTI-AGING | WEIGHT LOSS | STRESS RELIEF FLEXIBILITY | ENERGY ENHANCEMENTS MENTAL ALERTNESS | IMMUNITY BOOSTER INNER PEACE | IMPROVE RELATIONSHIPS HOLISTIC FITNESS AWARENESS • WEIGHT LOSS: Yoga continually works out muscles which then strengthen, lengthen, tone and shape your entire body; at the same time you are increasing metabolism. • STRESS RELIEF: As yoga breath control clears the mind, it also readies your subconscious for meditation and relaxation. • FLEXIBILITY: Yoga enhanced-stretching keeps you limber, youthful and healthy. Flexibility transforms the mind, as well as the body. Stretching slows the process of dehydration that our bodies may have suffered from a modern, sedentary lifestyle. • BODY STIMULATION: Yoga calms our inner nervous energy, but stimulates our bodies outer energy. As muscles heat up, the body releases impurities and toxins; combined with the deep breathing exercises, oxygen activates dormant vitalities in the body. • IMMUNITY BOOSTER: Yoga stimulates the four main physiological systems linked to the immune system: circulatory system, digestive system, nervous system and endocrine system. Yoga detoxifies and oxygenates the body while balancing hormones. Yoga also triggers acupressure points eliminating viruses and bacteria from the body. • IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS: Yoga connects the body and mind increasing sensitivity. With a heightened sense of “self” you are free to explore and expand yourself with a partner. • BETTER POSTURE: Yoga helps improve posture by navigating the alignment of the spine, which can then improve your health. Studies show that good posture is vital in staying healthy, helps to prevent chronic pain, and decreases depression and anxiety. The practice of yoga reverses hypermorphosis, the age-related posture issue known as dowager's hump. • MENTAL ALERTNESS: Yoga teaches us to concentrate on the here and now; to live in the present as we become aware of the outer strength of our bodies and the inner strength of our minds. • INNER PEACE: Yoga encourages a spiritual connection with one’s self. Connecting with our inner-child allows us to become satisfied and content with who we are as adults.

“Unknowingly, I was doing yoga way before it was even popular. As a child I used to get horrible migraines. To help me cope with the effects of the headaches, I would literally engage in visualization and meditation to calm my mind and relax my body. While in college I got a psychic flash that I would be very successful within the health and wellness industries. And, incredibly I started my own company — YogaFit in the 90s, a few years after graduating from college. Yoga has been a perfect fit for me personally and professionally as I was already a believer in the strength and flexibility it built in my body, and the calmness and connectedness it brought to my mind. Yoga gives you the gift of yourself. Instead of working against your body with exercises that put stress and strain on your muscles and joints, yoga allows you to develop strength and a greater state of health using your own body weight. There is no equipment. Just you and your yoga mat, and the practices you go through as you improve your health and fitness levels each class. It’s the combination of exercise and intense meditation that is wonderful. Yoga combines the two-essences of life: the mind and the body, to achieve your greatest vitality, strength and the ability to breathe yourself strong. At YogaFit we teach our clients to listen to their bodies, let go of judgements, expectations, competition, and to breathe, move and feel in the moment.” BETH

Along with most of you, Iʼm as guilty as anyone when it comes to taking short cuts where my health and wellbeing are concerned. And because Iʼve been blessed with good health, I forget to thank my body for giving me the strength and vitality it takes to keep my life running smoothly. Many days I donʼt eat properly; I donʼt exercise regularly; I donʼt take time for myself to emotionally and mentally chill out. These days, do we know anyone (including us) who isnʼt consumed with stress, anxiety, extra weight, personal drama, business worry, physical illness and ailments, and a leg long list of A-Z problems that makes a “happy life” nearly impossible to achieve? I donʼt. Are there any sure fire remedied that will make us feel better, lift our spirits and make our bodies strong enough to fight illness and disease AND give us a fighting chance at life? YES. YOGA.

COMMITMENT TO PURPOSE 1. What you do for your body, you do for your life. Yoga combats stress, anger, resentment and depression by giving us a “time-out” from the chaos of life. Yoga recharges our mental battery, offers time to decompress, nurtures inner peace, and gives us quiet time to heal our inner child. Yoga is shown to decrease depression by increasing levels of serotonin. 2. Immobility is the #1 cause of body deterioration. Increased flexibility is stan-dard in the practice of yoga. With improved body mobility, debilitating aches and pains that once ruled our world are replaced by invigoration, agility and stamina. Yoga employs your own body weight to give you the best workout of your life. Building body strength isnʼt just about looking good (although it doesnʼt hurt!). Building body strength builds flexibility which in turn combats the illnesses and diseases that gain their foothold as we age. Back and hip pain; knee and arm, hand and joint pain…. the stronger your body… the less chance you will experience the onset of age-related body breakdown. 3. A study at California State University, Los Angeles found that many posture poses in yoga strengthen bones that otherwise are vulnerable to fractures with our arms and legs. Yoga improves our posture which translates into a flatter stomach, straight back and relieves neck and spine pain by stretching vertebrae. 4. Itʼs a fact: For every one pound you are over-weight, you add seven pounds of tension, pressure and stress to your joints (hips, knees, ankles etc.). Incredible as that may sound, itʼs true. Unchecked weight gain and weight retention are destroying our bodies, one joint at a time. Yoga allows you the inner peace to explore issues that may be inhibiting you from reaching to and sticking with your fitness and health goals. Is there a reason you choose

bad food over healthy food? If weight gain makes you self-conscious, feel unattractive, and look older than your years... what is your inner child telling you that you continue to ignore? Isnʼt it time you discovered how amazing it feels to look and feel your best? BETH: “In Los Angeles especially, it’s all about being thin. But in reality, being thin is not what makes us look younger, or in shape. I am all for plastic surgery if that is what a person wants to do. But too many times people focus on the wrinkles on their faces omitting the obvious ... that their bodies are so emaciated, and so much loss of muscle has occurred because of strict dieting ... all that’s left is flabby, hanging skin. This is very apparent on upper arms. Yoga remodels the body with an ancient old method that works out muscles using a person’s own body weight. It is possible with yoga to workout our muscles without bulking up. Lean doesn’t have to mean scary skinny. Toned doesn’t have to mean pumped up muscles. Strong doesn’t have to mean bulky. Yoga offers strength training in a very natural way. Muscles will develop in the way muscles should without adding bulk. Scary skinny and loose and flabby is not sexy. Strong, lean and toned is what makes a woman — any age — unforgettable. Yoga gives something that dieting, plastic surgery — nothing else can — and that is the gift of yourself. With yoga we do push-ups, plant positions, downward facing dog, warriors poses, lunging — all using our own body weight. Regardless of where you are right now in your fitness level, you can do yoga. All you need is your own body weight to work your body in a very natural and organic way.” YogaFit offers each of us the opportunity to achieve the ultimate in health, fitness and wellbeing in a no-stress environment that encourages us to learn about ourselves and our bodies. Be the best you can be. Begin the journey at YogaFit.

When Your Loved One Needs Additional Care Frequently Asked Questions How does one find a quality assisted living facility with so many to choose from? When touring assisted living communities an important question to ask: Is the facility part of a large corporation or family owned and operated, and how flexible are their policies? The Beverly Hills Carmel is a family owned business; the same family for 40 years. This allows the Beverly Hills Carmel to be very flexible when helping families who come to us. We donʼt answer to a corporate office far away. We are right here, in the neighborhood, taking great care of our seniors.

Senior Independent and Assisted Living offering Elegant Retirement Living at its finest in Beverly Hills.

Is what you see only “for show” and meant for

prospective clients touring the communities, or can a senior actually use those things? Make sure activities are about senior residents, not just for a good marketing impression. We listen to our residents and design activities they want and will have a great time participating in. There is only one group we want to impress – our residents! Is the building clean, comfortable and most important does it feel like a warm welcoming home to your loved one? Food is very important to seniors in retirement facilities. Where does the facility order their food? If possible ask to have a meal at the facility to sample the quality and service. Itʼs no secret that we have the best food in town. Looking for fabulous home-cooked Kosher meals? Come by and have lunch on us when you tour! How long have staff members worked for that organization — on average? This tells you a lot about the ownership. At the Beverly Hills Carmel, we have staff members who have been with us 24, 27, even 39 years! In fact, the average longevity for an employee is 17 years. That is a record we are very proud of!

When selecting a retirement community, The Beverly Hills Carmel is one of the bestkept secrets in Los Angeles. We have two beautiful buildings to choose from situated across the street from each other on lovely tree-lined Burton Way. Both Carmel North and Carmel South welcome residents and guests into an exclusive upscale hotel atmosphere. Since 1976, we have provided loving care and elegant, upscale retirement living for our residents. Additionally, we provide assistance with all the activities of daily living including medication management, bathing and dressing, etc., should it be needed. We tailor each plan to the individual resident; from independent to full care. Conveniently located by Cedars-Sinai Hospital, The Beverly Center, and the famous dining and shopping locations on Robertson Boulevard, you are welcome to come and live the good life in luxurious, comfortable and home-like surroundings. Each family has different priorities. At the Beverly Hills Carmel, our focus is on seniors. Our buildings are beautiful, but itʼs equally important for us to have staff members who share our commitment of one-on-one service for residents and we truly care for our elders. Thatʼs what counts and makes our residentsʼ stay with us so rewarding. Our priority is your loved one and their comfort, happiness, and well-being. Call today for a tour. Unlock the Value of Your Portfolio With Securities-Based Lending

Graham O’Kelly, CFA, Family Wealth Director The CORE Group at Morgan Stanley, Beverly Hills 310-285-4976

HOW you borrow is an important aspect of maintaining

your wealth and achieving your overall financial objectives. When executed properly, securities-based lending can provide the financing you need without liquidating assets, diminishing cash reserves or disrupting your overall investment strategy. 1.As you pursue your passions—such as delving into a business opportunity or purchasing a vacation home—you are faced with multiple financing options. How you choose to borrow is important to meet your immediate need for liquidity as well as maintain your long-term wealth management strategy. Liquidating an investment account can be part of that plan, but there are potential hidden costs in doing so such as taxes on capital gains. 2. Two other considerations include the potential loss of future asset growth, also known as opportunity cost, and possibility of creating an imbalance in your portfolioʼs overall asset allocation. When the time comes—or an opportunity arises—an alternate financing strategy may offer a more practical approach: securitiesbased lending. For those of you not familiar with securities-based lending, it is a form of lending that enables you to use the eligible securities in your brokerage account as collateral for a loan or a line of credit. As long as eligible collateral remain and an adequate value of such collateral is maintained, a securities-based loan can create the liquidity you need to take advantage of a present opportunity or meet an immediate need without liquidating assets, diminishing cash reserves or disrupting your overall investment strategy. By establishing a securities-based loan, you gain quick and efficient access to funds that may enable you to achieve a number of objectives. • • • • • • •

Securities-based lending offers many benefits that may not be available through traditional loans. The process is relatively simple, in part, because the collateral is liquid and readily accessed via your investment account. Once established, you can make withdrawals by simply writing a check or wiring funds when needed. With no origination, maintenance or facility fees, securities-based loans may be a cost- effective solution. Interest rates on securities-based loans can be lower than alternatives such as mortgages and home-equity lines of credit. 4. Because your investments are not liquidated, as long as the required level of collateral is maintained, securitiesbased lending preserves the potential for growth of your investments and reduces the chances of having an imbalance in asset allocation.3 In this way, securities-based lending aligns with your overall wealth management objectives

This scenario excludes fees, taxes and other potential deductions. There are risks associated with using your assets as collateral in a securities-based loan, and doing so is not beneficial for all clients. Sufficient collateral must be maintained and you may need to deposit additional eligible securities on short notice. Please contact us to learn more about securities-based loans in addition to other lending solutions that might be an appropriate solution for your financing needs.

FOOTNOTES/DISCLAIMERS 1 Securities-based Lending Risks: Borrowing against securities may not be suitable for everyone. You should be aware that securities-based loans involve a high degree of risk and that market conditions can magnify any potential for loss. Most importantly, you need to understand that: (1) Sufficient collateral must be maintained to support your loan(s) and to take future advances; (2) You may have to deposit additional cash or eligible securities on short notice; (3) Some or all of your securities may be sold without prior notice in order to maintain account equity at required collateral maintenance levels. You will not be entitled to choose the securities that will be sold. These actions may interrupt your long-term investment strategy and may result in adverse tax consequences or in additional fees being assessed; (4) Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC or its affiliates (the “Firm”) reserves the right not to fund any advance request due to insufficient collateral or for any other reason except for any portion of a securities-based loan that is identified as a committed facility; (5) The Firm reserves the right to increase your collateral maintenance requirements at any time without notice; and (6) The Firm reserves the right to call your securities-based loan at any time and for any reason. 2 Morgan Stanley and its Financial Advisors do not offer tax advice. by enabling you to unlock the value of your portfolio to meet short-term financing needs, while keeping your longer-term wealth management strategy intact. The chart and table illustrate a hypothetical example of how a securitiesbased loan can potentially buffer a portfolio based on the S&P 500 index from the adverse effects of withdrawing $200,000 and depositing $200,000 one year later. If this vestor utilized a securities-based loan to fund the $200,000 liquidity need rather than withdrawing funds from the portfolio, he could potentially have over $103,000 more (based on this time period and scenario).

BIG PICTURE

Out now and by the way... fantastic is Steam's new BIG PICTURE which comes complete and ready to use on your television. I honestly think this new Steam feature will change our thinking about what we believe a television is used for. BIG PICTURE can not only be used for television and movies, but also to browse the internet, download and play games from Steam's huge library of games, and socialize with your friends on the Steam community. It is very smooth and has a great feel. The thing I like the most is that it is very user friendly. I use it everyday to browse the internet, chat with friends and play games.

STEAM GREENLIGHT

Steam Greenlight is a system that uses the communityʼs input to help choose which games they will release next. This program is awesome because it gives everyone a chance to pick what they want next. Itʼs great voting for a game you find

34 // bhtmag.com //

interesting, and then see it released on Steam. Every game that gets posted on Greenlight is customized because the game developers post specific information about the game like videos, screen shots and basically whatever they want released. This Greenlight feature gives anyone in the world the opportunity to make a game, and then contact Steam and have the chance to get it released on the market for millions of people to see. I have personally seen several incredible games released on Steam Greenlight, and I enjoy getting a first look at what I believe will be a next sure winner for gamers.

Steam Community.

Steam is an incredible program that I use on a daily basis on my phone, television and computer. In my opinion you canʼt go wrong with Steam and their services and prod-

ucts. For more information on Steam visit www.Steamcommunity.com and be sure to play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 — both of these games are fantastic 10/10.

50 Million & Growing Happy Gamers Worldwide.

Meet The Team That Brought Us Valve

Gabe Newell - President

With 50+ million bated-breath users whose mouths stay in a carp-like trance waiting and hoping for the next megavideo game from Valve to hit the market, few can deny that Newell is God in the gaming community. From the way he runs the corporation since it began in 1996, itʼs referred to as a “bossless company” with perks floating around the Bellevue, Washington DC office that include free massages, espresso and laundry service. I want a job! How does this uber-cyclonic gaming company motate without bosses? Quite well. Business increased by 50% last year. Although it might be all games over at Valve... NO bosses doesnʼt mean itʼs all fun! Leadership trickles down from higher-ups as employees oversee employees and rank job performance “voting” on who they believe are valuable to the company—or not. Newell (Harvard man and former employee at Microsoft for 13 years in various positions in the Systems, Applications, and Advanced Technology divisions that included running program management for the first two releases of Windows, starting the company's multi-media division, and pioneering information for the Information Highway PC) has taken his company to new heights as one of the biggest software/game developer/video game distributors on planet earth. Steam owns one of the rare independent app stores, second only to the iTunes store and holds the reigns over 70% of the PC video game digital download market to the tune (excuse the pun!) of $2-3 billion in revenues. With accolades mounting, Newell among other mentionables received the BAFTA award for his contributions to gaming which helped fulfilled a prophecy back in December 2010, when Forbes touted him, "A Name You Should Know" for the major successes of the Steam Team. A little over a year ago, Newellʼs estimated net worth sat in the ball park of $1.5 billion. Who says video games are a waste of time? My mom used to, but Iʼve been changing her mind. !

Robin Walker - Lead Designer

If you havenʼt played and... been obsessed with Team Fortress 2, then stop reading right now because neither this article nor any of my future articles are for you! Since starting with Valve back in 1998 as a Software Developer and Programer, Walker got his name in headlines as the co-creator of the very first Team Fortress mod for Quake. The game was so successful that Valve came knocking at his door asking him to join their team. His position as the lead designer for the monster hit Team Fortress 2, created the most widely played, most popular franchises in the world of gaming.

#1Video Game Developer & Distributor of Planet Earth!

Within the Valve family, he emerged a true Valve frontrunner developing Portal, Half-Life 2, CounterStrike: Source, HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, Left 4 Dead, Opposing Force, Blue Shift and HalfLife: Counter-Strike. Walker is the appointed voice for TF2, and does most of the blog posts at tf2.com, the gamesʼ website and continues to be responsible for design, code, and management on various Valve products. !

Joe Ludwig - Software Developer/Programmer

Nobody quite comes close to Ludwigʼs sense of the Valve style as he does making the rounds in the high-tech virtual reality headset designed specifically for Team Fortress 2. S i n c e joining the Valve team in 2009, Ludwig has spent his long work days behind the scene as a programmer and seasoned game develper. Though not in the capacity of an “official” Valve correspondent, Ludwig frequents the vast internet gaming community getting up close and personal with his loyal followers in the extensive blogs he is so well known for, explaining the detailed ins and outs of MMO tech and game development. Before there was Valve, Ludwig had spent years in the Flying Lab Software department and, currently he is being touted as a lead in the ongoing future of Valve in the extended virtual reality efforts that the company continues to develop. !

Greg Croomer - Design & Communication

With a mantra of... “Getting rid of bosses makes for better games...” Croomer is an advocate for Valveʼs organizational working structure stating at a conference, “The actual career growth in an environment like Valveʼs is incredibly accelerated and it is something that allows people to make progress exactly limited only by their own desire and ability.” With big ideas on expanding the world of adult gaming to a kid-friendly environment of fun and teamship, he is a spokesperson for his dream project t itled Akzidenz-Grotesk—a gamers wonderland for the younger set. Before Valve, he was a freelance product designer, went to Nintendo and moved onto Microsoft where software products. !

Eric Johnson - Business Development Recognized as the lead guy behind the Dota 2 conceptual team, Johnson has come along way since his days as a shoe and used cars salesman. He was initially introduced to Valve as one of Sierra's Half-Life testers, then offered a position as a Valve shipping manager before evolving into a company business development authority, a job that comes with heavy responsibility in the areas of pioneering game platform and making certain every detail from cutting-edge conception technology to distribution is perfectly executed for one of the worlds premier online gaming companies. !

Coachella Fest ‘14

By Summer de Almeida

NOT too ar away, in the land of The Coachella

Valley there is phenomenal music, outrageous art, hundreds of thousands of happy people, an endless supply of food, drinks, AND fashion blitzes even crazier than whatʼs in Lady Gaga's closet. Since the first festival back in 1999, this music venue has grown into one of the most spectacular accumulations of music acts on planet earth. And, each year the Coachella Valley Art & Music Festival gets better bringing together the biggest ticket acts to a desert valley of screaming fans who have waited breathlessly for months to see their favorite acts perform live. The only thing HOTTER than the Coachella Valley sun, is the Coachella festival, a three day blur of fabulous that NEVER fails to dazzle on any level. A few of the many iconic and talented artists who have performed and, the mind-blowing real-to-life illusions that have crossed the stages at the Coachella Fest include: Madonna, Roger Waters, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, The Cure, Snoop Dogg, Prince AND Jimi Hendrix??? AND Tupac Shakur in 2012??? Incredibly, both took the stage to entertain. Well, maybe not in the flesh BUT the next best thing … Tupac the Hologram was there. That's right, Coachella Fest had a TUPAC HOLOGRAM to perform with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Surreal is the only word that adequately describes what the festgoers witnessed. Aside from incredible music, tasteful art, and the best weekend of your entire life, the festival offers camping at an onsite location. Itʼs just FUN for people of all ages. Seriously, just the camping alone with your family and/or friends under the bright stars surrounded by so many other friendly beings is one of the major highlights of this unforgettable three days. But in case a campfire is not your style, donʼt panic. The area is surrounded with many luxurious and affordable hotels! And, if General Admission doesnʼt sound glamorous enough — no worries. The festival has a large, fully-equipped VIP section, which is highly accommodating — especially if you are a high-rolling VIP — or want to be — looking for a

little luxe in the desert. If you havenʼt been to the Coachella Festival this is YEAR ONE for you. I've attended the festival almost every single year since I was 12 years old, and like many other fans who regularly attend, I have never, ever, ever once been disappointed. Just when I think the next year couldn't possibly top the previous one, Golden Voice comes up now with something even more amazing... always finding ways to really WOW people! If you've attended this exceedingly fun and memorable festival before, you know what I'm talking about! And, if you haven't, and this all just sounds way too good to be true — get your wristband, your friends, family, water, sunscreen, positive energy and head down to the Coachella Valley in April for a weekend full of nothing but FUN! Or, maybe it will just turm out to be TWO WEEKENDS of nothing but FUN!!!!!! Starting back in 2012, Coachella Valley Art & Music Festival decided to have the same exact three day festival on the very following weekend, just for those die-hard fans

who were craving more and more and more! You know what Iʼm talking about. Fans who didnʼt get enough, and fans who couldn't wait a whole year for a repeat. And also for any disappointed fans who were unable to purchase a wristband due to how fast they sell out. Bobby Causey’s World Dream Bobby

Causey is an amazing sculptor and his work is beyond professional... itʼs the best in the industry. The best I have ever seen in my life. Each piece is handcrafted with amazing detail and he uses real hair, fabrics, and silicon. His head sculpts are very life-like down to the actual individual hair that are punched in one at a time. As an artist myself, I can spot determination for pefection when I see it. Bobby takes your dream and turns it into a reality. He is the best in the business and his state of the art equipment and techniques canʼt be found anywhere else. Truly one of a kind, Bobby is a selftaught professional sculptor, who can sculpt everything from life-like statues, all the way to cars. Bobby and his wife each create "out of this world" pieces — by hand.

Beauty • Health • Well-Being W h a t ’s W r o n g W i t h W h e a t ? Gluten-Free: Why You Should Be. by Sharyn Wynters

WHAT’S wrong with wheat? I get asked that question all the time. The problem is not the wheat. The problem is what we have done to the wheat … and Iʼm not referring to the refining process ... making white flour out of whole wheat. Iʼm referring to what we have done to the wheat itself. Modern varieties of wheat contain up to 40 times more gluten than ancient wheat. Modern varieties also contain less protein and fewer nutrients. So today “wheat” is not really wheat anymore; itʼs a man-made grain created to produce high-yield crops despite deficient soil and pesticide-infested agricultural practices. The other problem is while we have been breeding wheat to meet our agricultural needs (ignoring its nutritional content) we have been phasing out other grains. Wheat is in everything. If you are not a label reader, just pick up a few boxes at the grocery store. Your chances of finding “wheat” as one of the main ingredients are pretty high. Not only is wheat not in reality wheat anymore, but our excessive consumption of it is affecting our health. The latest figures indicate that nearly one in three Americans have either been diagnosed with gluten intolerance or suspect they may be intolerant. Symptoms range from celiac disease among other digestive disorders to diabetes, heart disease, allergies, arthritis, rashes, and an assortment of neurological problems. Todayʼs modern wheat, with its high-gluten, high-carbohy-

38 // bhtmag.com //

drate and low nutrient content, is accountable for exaggerated blood sugar surges; responsible for accelerated glycation (the process called Advanced Glycation Endproducts, acronymed AGE); accountable for inflammation that erodes cartilage; and for numerous immune disorders. This is a dangerously heavy indictment for a grain. Especially a grain that we been told for years is the mainstay of life. And, it gets worse. The glycemic index ( i.e., the comparative blood sugar effects of different foods) for whole wheat bread is higher than table sugar. IT IS TRUE! Whole wheat bread has an index of 72 and sucrose comes in at 59. This has serious implications for those with diabetes and various weight issues. The higher the glycemic index, the higher the blood glucose after consumption and the greater the insulin required to balance blood sugar. Imagine: two slices of whole wheat bread dramatically increase blood glucose, triggering insulin and increase in abdominal fat. High blood sugar levels over sustained periods of time, result in deep visceral (abdominal) fat. This prompted Dr. William Davis, M.D. to write the New York Times bestselling book, Wheat Belly, a well-documented review of the connection between modern wheat, gluten intolerance and disease. The bigger your wheat belly, the poorer your response to insulin; a situation cultivating in weight gain and diabetes. The bigger your wheat belly, the more inflammatory responses are triggered and the greater your risk of heart disease and cancer.

From The Skillet Into The Frying Pan Even if you donʼtʼ have symptoms of gluten sensitivity, you should temper your consumption of wheat. Many experts believe that 97% of gluten intolerant individuals remain undiagnosed. Even more may be affected by a subclinical gluten sensitivity. There are plenty of other grains that donʼt have gluten. (Amaranth, Buckwheat, Millet,

Oats, Rice, Sorghum and Wild rice). Itʼs a matter of learning how to substitute. Glutenintolerant individuals, using gluten-free grains along with foods like nuts, arrowroot, beans, chestnuts, mesquite, and tapioca, all of which are gluten-free, create delicious breakfast cereals and side dishes. But donʼt jump from the skillet into the frying pan. One mistake many people make when trying to move to a gluten-free diet is substitute with corn and/or soy. Neither of these contain gluten, but neither are in your best interest. More than 75% percent of processed, packaged foods, including many gluten-free products, contain corn or soy ingredients. They are in nearly all fast foods. Many individuals have sub-clinical sensitivities to corn and soy. One reason may be that like wheat, both of these foods have been the subject of intensive genetic modification.

Nearly all corn and soy products on the market today (unless specifically labeled non-GMO) have been genetically altered and cause allergy-type reactions that build up over time. They will be our next “wheat.” Keep reading the labels and steer clear of wheat, corn and soy—unless they are organic and non-GMO. Your best option is always a diet of fresh, whole foods. Let vegetables and fruits be your mainstay, rather than wheat, corn or soy. Sharyn Wynters is a naturopath with

Defining Beauty Robert Moran Doctor of Glam

Celebrity Hair & Make-up Artist

Hair Trend #1 — Braids With A Twist

An increase demand for beautiful braids... simple or intricate — for a wedding or a walk in the park, braids continue to be a sought-after hairstyle. And, dont think every braid has to be perfect. The messy braid is here to stay!

Hair Trend # 6 — Bangin Bangs

Be on the lookout for increased fashion hair colors! And weʼre not talking a few pieces of bright hair on the ends, or face (thatʼs FAB too!) but I have clients asking for all over fashion colors, especially pastels! The fashion hair color I predict will be the HOTTEST in 2014 is PURPLE.

Maybe youʼre more on the conservative side and not ready to get completely bold YET and thatʼs okay. But you might consider BANGS! Soft or edgy — bangs continue to be on the rise. What makes bangs a success is the ability of your stylist to choose the right cut for your facial features. The idea of bangs is to enhance or hide. You and your styllist will decide.

Hair Trend #3 — Silver/Gray

Hair Trend #7 — Short & Edgy

Hair Trend #2 — Pastel Fashion

Look out! A hair color you'll see a lot is the one we spent decades in the salon industry trying to cover up. Grey! Whether its a shimmering silver color, or a matte gray, you will be surprised to see a sharp increase of young edgy men and women with gray hair! Not to mention super grey clients may want to opt for this hair color trend, as it enhances what they already have.

Hair Trend #4 — Red Hair

This style continues from 2013 — as a red head does turn heads. Look for all types of red hair colors. My clients ask for fashion reds, copper reds, fiery reds, and maybe a mixture of all three. Itʼs a return to vintage styles and trends of the 1930s through the 1960s and more.

Hair Trend #5 — Vintage Curls & Waves

This look is elegant and classic and making a strong trend upward. Whatʼs even better? This look can be glammed up for a beautiful wedding or made casual with a headband or scarf! And personally, Iʼve been waiting for pin curls to make their comeback!

40 // bhtmag.com //

While there are still plenty of ladies and men growing out their locks to rock those highly sought-after beach waves, 2014 comes on fast with a hard rocker Miley Cyrus look, or a softer Michelle Williams or Ann Hathaway style BUT short!

Hair Trend #8 — Sleek & Smooth Long Hair With Deep Side & Middle Parts

While voluptuous curls still hold an interest, another flash back to the late 1960s early 1970s is upon us! Headbands have made their comeback, and following is sleek sexy hair paired with a deep side or middle part and bangs—or not.

Hair Trend # 9 — Sandy, Smokey, Mink Shades

I say it again... vintage hairstyles are in! Not just for haircuts, but soft sandy hair colors are being requested. Ashes and grays and silvers...

Hair Trend #10 — Obviously Ombre!

No matter how over-done you feel this looks — its here to stay. With so many various OMBRE options this trend is fun and different.

Hair Trend #11 — Pompadour & Quiffs

This unisex hairstyle continues to rise. Men and women want this for different style modifications.

Hair Trend #12 — Slick Hair On The Runway

Slick hair is an unexpected look during Resort and Swimwear Shows. While itʼs not the easiest to pull off for the average, everyday look, itʼs perfect for a evening or event look when you want to shake things up. Slicking back only the sides of your hair is a glam way to reference a faux-hawk look as the punk trend is popular again.

Make-up Trend #1 — The Cat Eye

Itʼs been strong in edgy circles, and has finally become popular with brides. Whatʼs great about Cat-Eye liner is its retro glam look; trendy but classic — especially in photos. And the looks glams with any wedding gown. Fashion will be filled with Cat Eyes so get on board.

Make-up Trend #2 — Pretty Pink Lips

Berry and Baby PInk by RM Cosmetics was a BIG make-up trend on 2013 fashion runways. Along with Cat Eyes, pink is set to be a favorite lipstick statement for this yearʼs brides. With so many shades to choose from... pink is blissful as it demands a less committment than red BUT either is a wedding favorite; fun and glam!

Impressionist Jeff Tracta Headlines with Jay Leno at Star-Studded Gala

Raising Over $1 Million for Charity

IMPRSSIONIST Jeff Tracta wowed guests to a standing

ovation at the $1,500-a-head black tie event, themed “Welcome to Casablanca,” featuring Moroccan-inspired dining, music, decor and dancing. The Alfred E. Mann Foundation gala emceed by Jay Leno and raised over $1 million for charity with over 400 people in attendance and featured Tractaʼs compelling performance, “A Journey Through Pop Culture,” that showcased more than 50 spot-on impressions. VIP guests included: Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis, Jr., Norm Nixon, Debbie Allen, Larry King, Shawn King and honored two award recipients Janet and Wayne Gretzky and Dr. Stanislao Rizzo for positively impacting the human condition. Jeff Tracta earned international fame with over 450 million viewers worldwide as Thorne Forrester on CBSʼs Emmy-winning The Bold & the Beautiful and since has taken his impressions to a new level, with an explosion of pop culture featuring favorite voices from the world of both contemporary and legendary comedians (Larry the Cable Guy, George Burns, Joan Rivers) to politicians (Presidents Bush and Reagan) to the world of cartoons (SpongeBob SquarePants, South Park, Family Guy and Popeye) to classic television (All In The Family, Bewitched, Gilliganʼs Island, The Honeymooners and The Andy Griffith Show) to music (Elton John, Billy Joel, NʼSync, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman and the Black Eyed Peas). The Annual Alfred E. Mann Foundation galas are dedicated to recognizing those who have made a direct impact to the human condition.

Make-up Trend #3 — Nude Complextion

On the runway a clean faced-no make-up look that dares to go bare with just a dab of concealer, minimal bronzing and a tiny touch of blush if any at all. This bare faced overall look is soft, dewy and translucent-sharp... a contrast to the more obvious artificial "glow" created with highly-reflective high-light creams and powders by RM Cosmetics. Prep skin with a good cleansing, followed by a non-manual exfoliation (an enzyme or acid mask is perfect. Mist with a hydrating toner/tonic (alcohol free) and finish with a super hydrating moisturizer. Use a RM Cosmetics sheer foundation or thin out a medium/ full coverage one with moisturizer and apply to face (to even skin tone). Dust the tiniest amount to loose powder by RM Cosmetics across your nose and your forehead to avoid an oily looking shiner.

Art for the Heart... GET ready to take a trip down the coast to visit the JoAnne Artman Gallery in Laguna Beach. The line-up of spectacular artworks is worth the drive. The entire month of January is “Through the Looking Glass” featuring photographer Brooke Shaden and Digital Artist Nadine Boughton. “Through the Looking Glass” Exhibits the uncanny photography of Brooke Shaden and the innovative photo-collages of Nadine Boughton. The works of the women are a mix of fact and fantasy that will take you on a journey through the looking glass and deep into their illuminating wonderlands. Brooke Shadenʼs work reflects a consistently changing perception of wonderland. Each photograph alludes a mood that is different from the next. Says Brooke, “It is my goal in photography to make beautiful that which others find disturbing, to take a simple concept (be it birth, death, or something in between – life) and mold it into something complex and magnetic.” Brooke is a fine art photographer in Los Angeles area and she says her passion lies in creating new worlds through photographs. Her vision extends beyond the realm of the camera, creating images that resemble paintings and speak of an era that is not our own. Each image is a story.

The Hostile Branches of Whistling Fog Forest

Ravished Life Behind Glass Nadine Boughton creates alternate realities with her use of menʼs adventure magazines from the 50ʼs and 60ʼs amongst the juxtaposition of womenʼs Better Homes and Gardenʼs magazines of the same era. Her work then reflects the col

We meet ourselves,” said Nadine, a collage artist, photographer, poet and teacher who is a recipient of the “Top 50″ Critical Mass 2011 competition, Photolucida. Tomas Wolfe Sound Master

By Annette Verde

WHAT does it take to be with the band? Let’s rephrase that. What does it take to be with a GREAT band? Well, it takes a band with talent, guts, tons of personality, audience appeal AND an amazing song or two or ten in their back pocket. But no man, OR band is an island. So, there is also a leg-long list of a behind-the-scenes crew that music-makers can’t live without. PR, management, stage hands, and the mighty — Front of House Engineer. Don’t know what that is? Well, let’s say the talent, or lack of an Front of House Engineer makes the difference between an excruciatingly painful, pretty good, or rockin’ outrageous live or recorded sound performance. Without question the most important element of any band or performer is the music they produce. An Front of House Engineer has a multi-level job that encompasses the recording, manipulation, mixing and reproduction of sound. These days Front of House Engineers get creative with a plethora of high-tech equipment and programs that create groundbreaking sounds for music, film, radio, television and computer games. Sure, there are film and sound schools that train people interested in becoming Audio Engineers. But when it comes right down to it — it’s the inborn “ear for sound” of a person that determines how good of an Audio Engineer he/she will be. The creativity, knowledge and experience of a seasoned audio engineer knows no bounds.

Having just been voted “One of Seven of the Best Live Sound Engineers in Los Angeles” — Tomas Wolfe knows exactly what it takes to make a live performance rock the rafters. From LA’s Staples Center, Viper Room, Club Nokia, Soho House and The El Rey, to the biggest and most outrageous live band festival oon planet earth — Coachella — and just about any venue you can name in about any state you can think of... Wolfe (31) a Los Angeles native) has made a name for himself spinning music because he has a great ear for turning out great sound. Recently, I caught up with Wolfe who was off tour and back in town for a flash of Christmas time with his family and friends. Tall, dark and adorably handsome,I had a few questions burning on my mind.

Front of House Engineering was I originally went to school to get my degree as a Recording Engineer. Soon after, I got offered a gig running live sound for a local band here in L.A., and I fell in love with the spontainity of live mixing. I never looked back. The specifics of my job is to capture sound from instruments, then mix them together for a bitchin’ show. What do you love most about your job? Having a platform where I can be creative and technical at the same time. Even better… look into the audience and see everybody enjoying the show. Tomaswolfe@gmail.com 310.591.4217

Everybody thinks working and traveling with a band must be so exciting BUT is it really? What's life like on the road? It's not as glamorous as people think. It takes a certain type of person to endure road life. But for me it's the greatest job I have ever had, and I love it. You work all the time with rarely a day off. If you do get a day off, you are usually traveling to the next city. It's great to travel, but I'm in a town for only a day, and that time is usually spent working at the venue. You have to deal with a lot of different personalities, and living in close quarters 24/7 takes adjustments on everyone’s part. It not for everybody that’s for sure. What you do is so specialized. Tell us what attracted you to Front of House Engineering, and what are the specifics of what you do? What attracted me to

PACIFIC DINING CAR THIS most definitely is one of the swagest restau-

rants in L.A . Located in Downtown Los Angeles, the Pacific Drive Car is a super-expensive restaurant situated in an old renovated railway train which has been expanded, and now has many rooms with old style seating and a sexy bar. An 81-year old bartender named Raphael is working there for over 27 years, and his twin brother is the maître d. We were greeted by the super amazing managers Gustavo and Miguel, who represent the restaurant outstandingly and they treated us like the queens of the railway train. Without question, we chose to dine in the Huntington Room. The room made us feel as if we are sitting in an old fashioned menʼs cigar room; a very rustic and sexy ambiance. At the table next to us sat three business men talking about taxes—cute, professional and definitely husband material! Our server Hugo (there for over 20 years) started us off with a fab first course of phenomenal Cheese Plate and Grilled Toast, Heirloom Tomato Salad – which was sweet and fragrant a Ceaser Salad, and the Dining Car Salad - garlicky and fresh. Our entrees were absolutely formidable; we ordered the 14oz Filet Mignon – it was thick yet tender and the Maine Lobster Tails — both were an absolute love affair! For our side dishes we couldnʼt resist the Jumbo Asparagus and a classic Idaho Potato. The desserts were splendid! We were served the Apple Tart Tatin which was so HOT if we were men we would need a COLD shower and the Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae with HOT fudge, and caramelized walnuts and whipped cream was absolutely sterling. Pacific Drive Car is opened 24 hours — breakfast and dinner is served all day — and they have complimentary cabs to the Staples Center, Music Center, Disney Concert Hall and Nokia Theater. The staff is absolutely professional and very sweet. A must go! Pacific Dining Car 1310 West 6th Street Los Angeles, CA 90017 (213) 483-6000

CAPO Dear Capo, you so want us to have boyfriends, OH donʼt you? You are such a romantic chic restaurant that

itʼs totally called for. Capos clientele consists mostly of couples celebrating anniversaries, tables of families, and men and women on dates at the small bar. This is not a place to look for potential boyfriends or girlfriends, but it is one where you bring a wife, date or family. We arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was to capacity around 8:30. It is very elegant — “especially” the little man with a big penis sculpture in the window, Capo is intimate, totally bijou with great eclectic décor. We started off with our favorite red wine— Malbec (Capo has a wine cellar with a wide selection of delicious wines) and mouthwatering appetizers: OH MY.... The Bluefin Tuna Tartare-leek terrine, B.B.Q. Romaine Caesar style salad – all crunchy and fresh, gave our bodies pure pleasure, the Burrata caprese was soft and creamy in our mouths and the B.B.Q Calamari OMG... superb. For our main dishes we ordered the Prime Filet Mignon Chop – which was fingerlicking, and the Rissoto Lobster... full of flavor and cooked to perfection. Deserts at Capo are a must! The Artisan Cheese Selection platter was sensual; Volcano Chocolate Cake — sweet taste of heaven lingering on our tongues, and the Hot Apple Tart with caramel ice cream– rich and irresistible — it made us deliriously happy for the rest of the night. Capo might be one of the cityʼs priciest Italian restaurants BUT worth every penny. Enter and Enjoy the decadent experience and OOOOH LA LA time!
