Why Vote In 2012 Pastor Robert L. Thomas pictured with his wife Tracey.

By Pastor Robert L. Thomas For Your Thought Matters Readers:

I know many of us will say the old cliché’ “Our forefathers died for this right!”, which is very true; but that alone as an argument to motivate us to do what we should already be excited to do; just isn’t enough.

Why we have to extol the virtues of voting to a people just a few decades removed from one of the worst atrocities ever perpetrated against mankind in the detestable act of slavery is really beyond me. It really boils down to this: if you are interested in having a better quality of life; you should go out and vote; if you want your children to be able to afford to attend college, then go vote; if you think your taxes are too high for the services you receive; go out and vote; if your school system is not what you want it to be; yep, you should get up and roll to the polls. It really is true — your vote is your voice! We have to be stronger in voice, so that what we say, when we say it, matters, and we are responsible for doing that at the voting booth. Elected officials work for the taxpayers, not the other way around, and as such, they should not be able to tell us what they are going to do, they are to push forward the positive agendas for bettering our safety, opportunities, prosperity and quality of life. The choice is yours, accept things as they are, or vote and seek the systemic change we all so richly deserve! Be Safe, Stay Informed!

Go Vote On Tuesday! BISHOP K.J. BROWN MINISTRIES -- “BUILDING WINNING LIVES”

EVERY VOTE MATTERS!

Voting is an empowered opportunity to choose leadership, which should be exercised every time we have the opportunity. Our collective voice is of great value to our neighborhoods, communities, city and country. Our political system affords us the opportunity to vote...and every vote matters. Everyone who is eligible to vote should do so. Never buy in to polls and percentages put out in the media...and figure that your vote won’t make a difference. Every vote counts and every voice will be heard by you participating in this very important and pivotal election. Be attentive to the issues and think forward. When I cast a ballot at the poll I use a biblical example as my guide. God chose David as King. When I read the story of David, I see a lesson we can all use in voting. God chose David because of the following reasons ONE: His heart. TWO: His History. THREE: How he would handle the issues. FOUR: How he would help the people. FIVE: How he would be used to heal the land. God knew that David wouldn’t be perfect; but God was able to use him in civil government in order to fulfill his divine purpose. Voting is not only valuable to the candidate. Voting is valuable to you and your family too. Our families are counting on us at the polls. Your right to vote is very valuable. So use it to be a part of the collective voice that leads this country forward. God Bless America!!!

Effective Conservative Leadership.

W

ith so much at stake, now is not the time to send unproven, inexperienced representatives to Washington.

Congressman Kevin Brady is the only candidate with the experience and conservative track-record required to fight against the liberal PelosiObama agenda. A pro-family, pro-family, pro-small business conservative, Kevin has worked his way up in the U.S. House and now holds important leadership posts on key committees, which means we enjoy a bigger voice on national issues. Kevin Brady stays in touch with those he represents. Unlike many in Congress, he never moved to Washington D.C. and this last August he held 53 health care town-hall meetings, the most in the entire country. Kevin Brady opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, tax increases and wasteful spending. Kevin Brady is working to end the T and return all bailout money to the taxpayers.

Keep Kevin Fighting for Us!

ABOUT CONGRESSMAN BRADY Name: Kevin Brady Age: 57

Occupation: U.S. Representative, former chamber of commerce executive Position sought: U.S. Representative, 8th District

Reason for running and what makes you best: Our country is headed in the wrong direction. I’m worried our children and grandchildren won’t have the same opportunities we have.

I’m a proven pro-family, pro-business conservative with the experience and conservative track-record needed to fight against the liberal Obama agenda. I work hard to stay in touch with those I represent. Unlike many, I never moved to Washington. My wife and I raise our boys here in Montgomery County and I’ve logged nearly two million miles commuting each week to Congress. To hold myself accountable to my constituents I hold more than 50 town hall meetings a year.

After serving as a civic leader in Montgomery County I’ve worked my way up in the U.S. House and now hold important leadership posts on key committees - such as Ways & Means and Joint Economic Committee - which mean my constituents enjoy a bigger voice on national issues such as taxes, Medicare and Social Security. I help lead the fight to protect Texas energy jobs. I fought the Obama moratorium in the Gulf that hurt our Texas energy workers, and continue to successfully fight President Obama’s new taxes on Texas oil & gas companies that would drive local energy jobs overseas.

I’ve introduced the MAP Act to cut out-ofcontrol Washington spending. The MAP Act shrinks the size of the federal government by a quarter this decade, shuts down obsolete agencies, establishes a line-item veto to cut wasteful spending, and ends forever the threat of a government shutdown. Experience: Chamber of Commerce executive for 18 years including President, South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce 1985-1996; Texas House of Representatives 19901996; U.S. House of Representatives 1997 to present.

LEADERSHIP

“The 2012 General Election in America could perhaps be one of the most polarizing elections of our lifetime whereas race relations in this country is concerned. If my recent survey of a random group of folks either connected to me via my facebook network (or the networks of my friends) is correct, race relations may indeed be the “Big Loser” in this election no matter who emerges as the winner. Based on the survey, President Obama had perhaps the most diverse group of respondents endorsing him in his re-election bid. Only one African American (Shicreta Murray) in the group stepped forward and went on the record saying that she was endorsing Republican Mitt Romney. I’m not sure who will come out ahead on Election Day, but no matter which candidate wins the 2012 Presidential Election, race relations in the United States will no doubt be the “Big Loser” in this; what could perhaps be one of the most polarizing Presidential Elections of our lifetimes. Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, November 6th!” — AUBREY

RICHIE: “… Whether it is dealing with economic, healthcare, or national security issues, good leadership is necessary for our society to get through these difficult times. Level headed leadership is crucial in order to see the predicament through the end and to make certain all possible scenarios have been played out.”

LEADERSHIP

CURRENT TEXAS LIBERTARIAN PARTY CHAIRMAN PATRICK L. DIXON: “I doubt anyone would argue that leadership is not important at any time, but it is also necessary in order to prevent a crisis before it occurs. It is at times of crisis that the temptation for a leader to become a dictator grows. A great leader has followers that sincerely believe in the mission instead of being coerced to support a mission under threat.”

CURRENT U.S. CONGRESSMAN KEVIN BRADY: “It’s critical. In a terrible storm you don’t want to risk turning the helm of the ship over to someone who has never piloted one. These days voters want common-sense, qualified leaders with proven expertise to help steer this nation through rough economic times.”

FORMER MILITARY LEADER DEXTER HANDY: “Good leadership is absolutely necessary during times of crisis. When lives, livelihoods, safety, security, or infrastructures are at risk, a good strong leader must take control of the situation. As a former military leader I have the ability to quickly identify the critical problem areas, assess alternative approaches to fixing the problems, develop working solutions, pull together the right team to fix the problems, and make it happen. As a leader, I am also aware of communicating the solutions to the community affected, and taking measures to calm the fears of the people adversely affected.”

CURRENT U.S. CONGRESSMAN PETE OLSON: “Leadership and character are the two most important qualities for elected officials to possess in a crisis. These two qualities determine if someone will rise to the occasion, create a sense of teamwork and urgency and move the process along toward an appropriate solution. In Congress, we need more people who will be steadfast, keep their word and their principles and work toward the best result for the American people, and not for a given party.”

THESE ARE THE 2012 CANDIDATES WHO WANT YOU TO KNOW WHY THEY’RE THE BEST CANDIDATES IN THEIR RACE TED CRUZ SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for United States Senate

By Ted Cruz For Your Thought Matters Readers I’m running for Senate because in my judgment, America is at a crossroads. Barack Obama is the most radical president this nation has ever seen and we are facing the epic battle of our generation — a battle of whether this nation remains a free-market nation. The size, power, and spending of the federal government has increased faster in the past three years than ever before. And we desperately need leadership to stand up and defend liberty, free-market principles, and the U.S. Constitution. I think voters in Texas and across the country are tired of the same establishment incumbents. And 2010 showed they were looking for new leaders who have the courage of their convictions and are strong, principled conservatives who are willing to fight to defend limited government. For the past decade, over and over again, I have been standing up for conservative principles and winning on the national level. Serving under Attorney General Greg Abbott, I was proud to successfully defend the Pledge of Allegiance, the Ten Commandments, the Second Amendment, and U.S. sovereignty from the World Court and the UN—all of which we won before the U.S. Supreme Court. I am the only proven conservative in the race with a demonstrated record of standing up for conservative values and winning on a national level: • As the head of the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Tenth Amendment Studies, took a leading national role in fighting for States’ rights and against excessive federal regulation. • Successfully represented Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court in Medellin v. Texas, which upheld U.S. sovereignty and held that the World Court cannot bind the U.S. justice system and the President cannot order the state courts to obey the World Court. • Under the leadership of Attorney General Greg Abbott, repeatedly defended the right to free speech and religious expression, including in a landmark decision protecting the Texas Ten Commandments monument. • Played a leading role in several important pro-life cases, including defense of the partial-birth abortion ban, parental consent laws, and prohibiting state funds from going to abortion.

• Led a coalition of 31 states protecting the 2nd Amendment by challenging the unconstitutional ban on gun rights in Washington, D.C. • Worked to strengthen border security and help ensure that America remains a nation of laws. Among other efforts, worked on efforts to increase penalties for felons who enter the country illegally. • Defended the landmark lawsuit reform legislation implemented in Texas in 2003, protecting the constitutionality of that effort, which has led to greater access to health care and expanded economic opportunity. • Successfully represented over 3 million veterans before the U.S. Supreme Court, defending the constitutionality of the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial, which was erected in 1934 to honor WWI veterans. • Fought on the federal level to defend marriage between one man and one woman ----------------------------------------------------------------------

PAUL SADLER SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for United States Senate By Paul Sadler For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“I am a Democrat with a proven record of fierce, independent leadership and legislative experience. I want us to be problem solvers committed to the principles of this great country. Those principles are larger than a label – they live inside each of us. They are what made this country great. Join me as we return to that heritage, help me restore dignity and respect to our public institutions. One election at a time we can restore our faith in each other – it begins here and now, with the election of your next United States Senator. We need to build a stronger economy, invest in education and protect the progress we have made on health care. We must secure our border through investments in technology and pass the DREAM Act. We need to invest in new energy solutions.

................................................................................................

JIM DOUGHERTY SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 2ndCongressional District

By Jim Dougherty For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “Our government represents diverse people and views. While each of our individual principles and values may clash at times, we are united by the belief that we are best-represented by an elective citizens’ body in which agreements and laws are fashioned through informed judgments, rational processes, reasoned discussion and collegial collaboration. A public official’s duty is to govern in a manner that seeks the common good: is accountable and sustainable now and into the future. As circumstances change, society evolves and our needs shifts, so must our policies. Congressional representatives cannot and should not be so inflexible in their approaches to solutions that they are unable to relate to one another and attempt to meet the needs of all of the country’s citizens. The pledges of candidates in their campaigns must not be immutable on issues about which people can reasonably disagree, or so inflexible that they cannot act responsibly when confronted with the future needs. I believe in a law-based society, with individual freedoms enshrined in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. I believe in free enterprise which preserves a social safety net that prevents people from falling through; a tax system that is fair and proportionate to income and means. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to excel, and government has an obligation to assure that opportunity is available. I believe peace in the world is best achieved through communication and shared responsibility. I stand for cohesive policies that improve the quality of governance and life for all.”

...And M.J. Khan Is The Most Experienced Candidate In This Race!

I’m The Right Choice for HD-137

“My name is M.J. Khan and I’m the Republican candidate running for southwest Houston’s State Representative for House District 137. Once elected, YOU can count on ME to represent YOUR values in Austin. I’m uniquely qualified to be your next State Representative for House District 137. First of all, I am a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. I know the importance of family values. I understand that we must secure the future for our children and grandchildren; and I’m running to do just that. I want to build a better Texas for all our children. Second, I am a businessman. You can count on me to run Texas like a business. I will insist on efficiency; and I promise to cut wasteful government programs. Third, I am a TEXAN! I see Texans struggling for jobs; and I don’t like it! I see Texans weighed down with excessive taxes. I know more government interference will cost our community jobs. You can count on me to get our economy back on track by cutting crime, litigation, taxes and regulations that crush small businesses. I am a family man, I am a businessman, and I’m a TEXAN! And in the 2012 General Election I am asking for your vote so that I can represent our southwest Houston values in Austin.”

Important Issues

Since his first term, in 2004, as a Council Member for the city of Houston, MJ Khan has constantly strived for “improving the quality of life” of all Houstonians especially those who make District 137 a home. He remains committed to the pledge, even today, as he aspires to represent the District in the Texas State House. As in the past, MJ will present and support such policies and legislations that are geared for safer neighborhoods, better education and economic growth for all Houstonians especially those living in District 137.

Safe Neighborhoods; through better police training, increased funding for up-to-date equipment and new legislation aimed at crime prevention and preserving family values.

Better education; insuring increased funding for teachers’ compensation, educational grants, improving on quality of education, innovative approaches for testing and appraisal of students. Develop incentives and ideas for making access to higher education easier for all. Economic growth; MJ will strive to secure increased funding for repair, maintenance and building of roads and other infrastructure in the district. MJ will diligently work to keep taxes and other cost of doing business low and also encourage new businesses to move and make district 137 their home.

JAMES CARGAS SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 7th Congressional District By James Cargas For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I am the Democratic challenger in Congressional District 7. I am a former Congressional and Clinton White House aide, who is seeking election because I am tired of our do-nothing Congress. I have the experience to see Congress become a functioning institution again, just as our Founding Fathers envisioned. Vote for me if you, are tired of the Tea Party and gridlock in Washington, tired of the lack of basic arithmetic that has resulted in our largest deficit in history, or tired of trickle-down economics being repackaged and resold, as the Ryan Budget. Vote for me if you are disappointed that Congress fails to even debate comprehensive immigration reform, if you believe our energy-thirsty nation needs a comprehensive “all of the above” energy policy, or if you want to reverse a decade of cuts to research funding that has resulted in layoffs in the Texas Medical Center, and America no longer being the global leader in innovation and research. Finally, vote for me if you believe your Congressman should not block public transportation dollars from coming to METRO, which results in your gasoline tax dollars going to another state. I have the experience and understanding of how Washington is supposed to work. My first job out of college was working on Capitol Hill. This was back when Jim Wright of Texas was the Speaker and Ronald Reagan of California was President. Democrats and Republicans did not agree all the time, but at least we talked to each other and worked to find common ground. Back then members of Congress focused on what was right for America - All of America. After working in Congress, I went to law school in Washington DC and became an energy lawyer. I started out in the private sector working in a large law firm and then for an interstate natural gas pipeline company. I returned to public service, when I accepted a position in President Bill Clinton’s White House at the President’s Council on Sustainable Development. I finished out the Clinton Administration by serving Gov. Bill Richardson when he was the Secretary of Energy. Today, I work in the City Attorney’s Office handling all of the City’s energy transactions for Mayor Annise Parker. Previously, I did the same for Mayor Bill White. If I am elected, jobs, energy, science and a balanced budget will be my highest priorities. I understand the arithmetic necessary to balance the federal budget again, just like we did during the Clinton Administration. I am committed to seeing our Texas Medical Center remain a worldclass research center. I am also an energy expert who will work hard to develop and implement a comprehensive energy policy that balances fossil energy and renewable energy according to America’s demands; and that improves energy efficiency to reduce those demands. If you are tired of what Capitol Hill has become, then vote for me. I believe Houston can do better!”

KEVIN BRADY SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 8th Congressional District

By Congressman Kevin Brady For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “Our country is headed in the wrong direction. My wife and I

raise our boys here in Montgomery County and I’ve logged nearly two million miles commuting each week to Congress. To hold myself accountable to my constituents I hold more than 50 town hall meetings a year…After serving as a civic leader in Montgomery County I’ve worked my way up in the U.S. I’ve introduced the MAP Act to cut out-of-control Washington spending. The MAP Act shrinks the size of the federal government by a quarter this decade, shuts down obsolete agencies, establishes a line-item veto to cut wasteful spending, and ends forever the threat of a government shutdown.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEIL BURNS SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 8th Congressional District By Neil Burns For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“My name is Neil Burns and I am running for US Congress, District 8, Texas. Why am I undertaking this challenge? I believe Republicans have exhibited irresponsible behavior that is threatening our nation’s future. My opponent, Kevin Brady and the GOP want the American people to simply forget eight years of Republican control in which the nation was brought to its knees by huge spending deficits, two unpaid wars and a debilitating financial crisis that has lingered to cause unemployment levels not experienced since the great depression. Now, they propose to correct these problems through massive spending cuts (translation, more jobs lost). They would virtually dismantle safety net programs (cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits). At the same time, they claim to favor a so-called broadened tax base (which in their approach would actually increase taxes on the poor and middle class while reducing taxes for corporations and the wealthy). Fellow voters, would you put your trust in such a solution? Help me stop this hypocrisy and sheer lack of credibility.”

STEVE MUELLER SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 9th Congressional District

By Steve Mueller For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “The very foundations of our country are under attack and you and your family will suffer the consequences if wise choices are not made this election. Our Founding Fathers fled their homelands in search of a place of religious and economic freedom. After the War for Independence and the Article of Confederation, they created a “more perfect union” of the States with the Constitution. With the addition of the Bill of Rights, our God-given rights were to be protected by the government. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is attacking our Religious Liberty in the rules they have made around the “Affordability Care Act”. Their rules are requiring citizens to violate their consciences and their religious beliefs or else be in violation of the law. Violating civil and religious liberty is not new in history. Adolph Hitler came to power in a democratic republic during turbulent political times. His government suspended constitutional guarantees pertaining to civil liberties “For the Protection of the People and the State”. Today, I can assure you that providing affordable healthcare is no reason to be violating our God-given, constitutionally-protected rights. If you care about your rights, then vote for Romney for President. Obama has demonstrated in many ways that he will violate the rights of the people and go against American traditions, such as marriage being between one man and one woman, to achieve his political agenda. Let’s turn to the economy. Our economy is in terrible shape and getting worse. Our US dollar is at risk of losing its status as the world reserve currency because the world is losing confidence in the value of the US dollar. The FED’s recent announcement on quantitative easing that it will essentially “create” 40 Billion Dollars, out of thin air, every month for the foreseeable future, doesn’t help the trust factor at all. As our dollar loses its status as the world reserve currency, we are going to have a terrible, terrible situation on our hands. The incumbent Democrat I am running against refuses to make the hard choices that need to be made to stop going further into debt. We MUST stop going into debt. As Dave Ramsey says, first, cut up the credit cards, then, “live your wage”. The second step to turn this economy around and have it grow by 10 %, is to pass the Fair Tax. The Fair Tax bill is before Congress RIGHT NOW but has not been passed. Most of our Houstonarea Republicans have cosponsored the bill. None of our Democrats have. To conclude, if you value your rights and want to stop the spiral of debt, then vote for Steve Mueller for CD 9. Thank you for your time. The future of freedom is in your hands. I pray that you vote wisely.”

TAWANA CADIEN SHARES HER THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 10th Congressional District

By Tawana Cadien For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I am Tawana Cadien, your nominee for the United States Congress for District 10. I am excited about this opportunity to serve the people of District 10. District 10 is comprised of several counties including Travis, Bastrop, Lee, Fayette, Colorado, Austin, Washington, Waller, and Harris County. I am a Registered Nurse and I have also earned an Executive Master’s in Public Administration. I have a compassion for people, and I know that it is vital that you have representation that will put people before policy. I work for an organization that provides free mammograms I speak to individual citizens and organizations about breast, testicular, ovarian, and prostate cancer and the importance of early detection. There is so much at stake in this election, and I want you to know that I vote for me is a vote for compassion, care, and understanding. This District is reflective of America in that it consists of suburbs, rural areas, and cities. As your representative I will assure that every inch of this district has access to vital information that will enhance every community. We will collaborate with the big oil companies that are drilling in the rural areas to ensure that those citizens are trained and equipped, and hired so that not only does the oil company gain revenue, but the families and communities in which they drill also benefit. Our seniors deserve genuine gratitude for the services and contributions that they have made to our society. While I was in kindergarten, junior high, high school and college, these now sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety year olds were holding our country together. Instead of making life harder for them, we must show our appreciation by assuring that their Medicare is NOT put into a voucher system, but that their Medicare and other benefits reflect our true gratitude for their services and contributions to our country. Our children are our future is not a cliché, it is true. One day my daughters, ages nine and six along with your children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren will make decisions for our country. I want them to be prepared. Our children and young adults are watching and hearing what we do today. I want them to be assured that we are doing everything possible to secure a bright future for them. We must prepare them to compete in a global society. Our children are bright, they are full of hope and they have everything inside of them needed to one day take our country to new heights. We will give them the tools that they need by way of excellent educational, technical, and social skills. We owe so much to our veterans and active service men and women. What can you truly say about someone who willingly signs a form to say that they are ready to give their lives for the sake of others, for the sake of their country? Words can truly not express this level of sacrifice. It is vitally important that we support these men and women that without question supported us. We must get every veteran off of the street and in a place of safety. I want to thank you for keeping us safe. I want to thank you for putting so many others above yourself. I want to assure you and your family that I will work tirelessly to make sure that your sacrifice is not only acknowledged, but that you and your family have available every resource necessary to help you have a good life in the country that you so valiantly protected. I am asking every woman in District 10 to give me your support and your vote. I have been amazed at the devaluing of women that has become rampant in our country. Women you are valuable in your homes, to your family, and most definitely to our society. You are NOT a pre-existing condition. You are a human being that deserves respect and honor. As your representative, you will have a voice at the table. You will have someone that will vote for you and someone who

thinks that you should be paid fairly. The current District 10 representative has voted against the Fair Pay Act and has voted against measures in the Affordable Care Act that consider you as a pre-existing condition. The current District 10 representative as voted AGAINST YOU. Please take the time to view his voting record. I am asking every man who thinks that their mother, wives, daughters, and grand-daughters deserve a representative that votes for them, to vote for me. Your vote is not merely about being fair, your vote is a stance for what is right. Your vote for me is a vote for you! I will represent you and stand up for you. Every woman in District 10 now has an opportunity to have as seat at the table by voting Tawana Cadien for U.S. Congress. I will take your issues to heart. When I speak to citizens about early detection for cancer, it doesn’t matter how much money they have or where they live, or what party they are affiliated. My goal is to help save a life. I have a compassion for all people regardless of a status, party affiliation, or gender. As your representative I will not only be representing my family, but all of the citizens of District 10. Thank you in advance for your support. When you go to the polls, please vote Tawana Cadien for U.S. Congress.”

SEAN SEIBERT SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 18th Congressional District

By Sean Seibert For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “Houstonians of District 18, I’m listening to you, and I will fight for you! My commitment to you is that I will create jobs, protect your rights, and work to provide our children a better future. You deserve a government that will be fiscally responsible. Our children have the right to a future that is not burdened with the debt of this generation’s spending. I vow to be a new breed of public servant to you. I value liberty more than life. As a Lt. Col. in the Army, who has served for 29 years, I have a commitment to my fellow men and women in uniform… patriots, willing to give their lives for the country they hold so dear. Today, veterans have the second highest rate of unemployment. I will create incentives among the private sector to encourage the hiring of returning servicemen and women. As your Congressman, I will not support “boots on the ground” unless United States National Security is jeopardized, nor will I ever leave our diplomats vulnerable in known unstable environments. I am deeply concerned about the direction of our country. As of today, we have too many Americans out of work. Unemployment is higher than it’s been since the Great Depression. The national debt is 16 trillion dollars. We spend 9 billion per day; yet take in only 5 billion. The cost of critical items, like food and housing, are steadily increasing. Gasoline has doubled from only one dollar and eighty cents four years ago. We must do something differently. While America is out of work, or underemployed, this administration refuses to create solutions, and my opponent, Ms. Jackson-Lee, has been absent for over 30% of the votes. We have had no approved budget for 4 years. We must curb spending in Congress, get our debt under control, and put America back to work. I have a plan that brings jobs into the Houston area. I will work to reduce regula-

tions and support energy independence. I will get the government off the back of small businesses, so they can create more jobs, and I will bring your tax dollars back into the district for local job opportunities, education and crime prevention. I know what Texans value and I will fight for what is important to you. 18 years is long enough for my opponent to be in office! Our nation and our economy are at stake. We must change our course. “

SHEILA JACKSON LEE SHARES HER THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for U.S. Congress for the 18th Congressional District

By Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “As a Member of the United States Congress, I believe in expanded service to reach my constituents who are truly in need. My approach to service is to find solutions where others see problems. After Hurricane Ike I helped set up three pods for food distribution at various sites throughout the city and worked with a smaller church to serve an additional 8,000 persons in one day. Recently helped secure over $151 million dollars to repair homes still impacted by Hurricane Ike. Worked with HUD to save $7 million dollars for Houston Economic Development and Job Creation. Generated $849 million dollars for American Recovery Act projects. Kept 16 pools and community centers open during the historic heat wave experienced by Houston in 2011. Passed consent amendment with a unanimous vote honoring the returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently introduced H.R. 6019 Bullying Prevention and Intervention Act which passed out of the Judiciary Committee reauthorizing $200 million dollars. Passed H.R. 2130 Date Rape Drug Prohibition Act which protects women against date rape. Authored H.R. 750, the Save America Comprehensive Immigration Act and supported the Dream Act which was signed into law to protect innocent children. Secured 1.5 in federal funding to support post traumatic disorder services to a center in Houston that I established and $1.2 billion for public transportation and light rail. And played a major role in the passage of a new patent law which is considered the most significant reform helping small businesses. I work with a very diverse constituency and I take that diversity of ideas back to Washington to pass legislation working with both Democrats and Republicans. Supported capping tuition hikes at public colleges and universities in order to make college more affordable and stopped increases in student loan interest rates. And played a major role in the passage of a new patent law which is considered the most significant reform helping small businesses. Held the 1st annual health fair at the George R. Brown convention center which provided free health screening and testing for over one thousand participants and a home foreclosure event to help keep families in their homes working with the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) and local banks. Served on the following Boards: United Way, Chair of Interfaith Ministries, Chair of Urban Scouting, President of the Houston Lawyers Association, State Bar Board of Texas, Ensemble Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, Founder and Co-Chair of House of Representatives Congressional Children’s Caucus and the Pakistan/Afghan Caucus. Founder of the Houston Youth Impact Program (serving Middle School Boys). Received the following awards: First Focus Champion of Children 2011/2012, US Dream Academy

DALE HENRY SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner

By Dale Henry For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I’m Dale Henry, and I’m the Democrat running for Texas Railroad Commissioner in the 2012 General election. There are so many problems at the Railroad Commission that we do not have time enough for an in depth dialog. All of these issues affect the people of the state of Texas…The Railroad Commission does not monitor all the CEMENTING JOBS AT EVERY WELL SITE AS IT IS DECLARED TO DO! Therefore, we have wells that are NOT cemented properly (with a good chance that they were not inspected) and have a high probability of failure and contaminating our precious ground water. They are not monitoring because the Railroad Commission is run by appointees, who were put there mostly by the governor,— WHO HAVE NO ON-THE-GROUND EXPERIENCE, NO EXPERIENCE IN MAN-POWER UTILIZATION — AND ARE BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY THRU CAMPAIGN FINANCE! Just look at the Texas Ethics Commission, to see the millions of dollars of campaign finance my opponent has taken; and nearly half of it is from the oil and gas industry. Now I call that A HUGE CONFLICT OF INTEREST, and any good attorney should know that. This is the reason that most of the people see a cloud of corruption over the Railroad Commission. It is also the reason that I SELF FINANCE MY CAMPAIGN, AND DO NOT ACCEPT ANY MONEYS FROM SPECIAL INTERESTS OR (PACS) Political Action Committees. I CAN NOT BE BOUGHT BY THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY…The Railroad Commission does not have enough people (inspectors and supervisors), that work enough hours to carry out THEIR MANDATE OF OVER-SIGHT OF THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY! …Drilling permits are Rubber Stamped at the Rail Road Commission. This must stop and new policies need to be applied...This list could go on for a very long time. And I am out of time, right now.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DON WILLETT SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for Texas Supreme Court Justice for Place 2

By Justice Don Willett For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “When I joined the Supreme Court in 2005, Texas’ four — then-living former chief justices—a bipartisan group of eminent legal statesmen—hailed my appointment, calling it “outstanding,” noting their “unanimous support and admiration,” and saying” Willett brings to the court one of the most varied and wide-ranging legal backgrounds in recent memory.” I’ve been fortunate to work for a federal appellate judge, a major Texas law firm, a Texas Attorney General, a Texas Governor, a U.S. Attorney General and the President of the United States. All in all, it’s a resume of uncommon and tremendous breadth that has bestowed this key virtue: I know judging; I know policymaking; and I know the difference. I’m proud to have earned broad-based support from both sides of the aisle and both sides of the docket. Recently, a bipartisan group of former State Bar of Texas appellate chairs urged their fellow appellate lawyers—those

with the keenest interest in a top-tier Supreme Court—to rally behind me. This group of preeminent appellate leaders said:

Justice Willett has built a record of impressive scholarship and no-favorites decision making. He writes with welcome clarity and also shows refreshing independence, often departing from his colleagues to write separately. Plus, he always writes swiftly, never falling behind on his docket. . . . We are a nonpartisan group who asks everyone who favors a strong high-caliber judiciary to support Justice Willett. In my seven years on the Court, I’ve earned a reputation for distinctive and evenhanded scholarship.”

JOHN DEVINE SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for Texas Supreme Court Justice Place #4

By John Devine For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I am the most experienced and well qualified candidate in the race. I have received every major endorsement in the race for Texas Supreme Court, Place 4. I have served our community in many official capacities including: District Judge, 190th District Court, 1995 – 2002; Special Judge, Harris Co. J.P. Courts, 2002 – 2011; Harris County Juvenile Board; Harris County Juvenile Justice School Board; Board of Civil District Judges Mass Torts Committee; Board of Civil District Judges; Texas Association of State Judges; and, American Judges Association. I recently moved to Austin from the Houston area. I have lived in the Houston area for more than 25 years. I served 8 years on the bench and compiled an impressive judicial record: My court ranked #1 in reducing the court’s case load. My decisions were reversed in appeals court less than any other judge at the time. I was named the “Judge of the Year” by Police Organizations and awarded the title of “Texas Size Hero” by Focus on the Family magazine. I am also known as the “10 Commandments Judge.” I am a conservative who is a proud defender of the values which have made our country great. I received national acclaim by refusing to remove a painting of the Ten Commandments from my courtroom and defeated a related lawsuit by liberal activists. Happily married my wife, Nubia, for 23 years and blessed with six children.”

DONNA BAHORICH SHARES HER THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for Texas Board of Education, District 6

By Donna Bahorich For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“Five million public school students will attend Texas schools this year. That represents 10% of the students educated in public schools nationwide. I believe that our students

matter not only to the future of Texas but to the nation. EVERY school must be a place of high student expectations, high teacher quality, and a highly focused mission to prepare our students for college and career. Curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education must be relevant, academically sound, rigorous and clear. A rigorous high school curriculum is a strong predictor of college readiness. Re-teaching basic skills in reading, writing and math in college is a $200 million a year problem in Texas. Only 1/3 of students taking remedial classes earn a degree even after six years. We must not fail our children by accepting mediocre standards. The job market of today breaks downs as follows: 50% of jobs require education beyond high school but less than a 4year degree, 30% require a 4-yr degree, only 20% require a high school education or less. The Career and Technical Education now available for our students in high school help prepare and engage them in their futures. Students can earn certifications, licensures and college credit to enable them to earn a 4-year degree or to secure a good paying job upon graduation. Considering 78% of students work during college, higher wages, as a result of skills earned, increase the opportunity to secure a diploma. Real world, real jobs, real futures. This is my passion as I seek to serve on the State Board.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

R.W. BRAY SHARES HIS THOUGHTS & PRAYERS:

I Will Continue To Keep The Gallegos Family In My Prayers

By R.W. Bray For The People of Senate District 6 in Texas “My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of Texas Senator Mario Gallegos. Today is a tragic day as we have lost a true pioneer and visionary in Texas politics. For the last 17 years Senator Gallegos has served the citizens of District 6 with great heart and compassion; the spirit of the Senator’s commitment toward bringing positive change to the District will live on. I was truly honored to be in a campaign with the first Hispanic Senator elected to represent Harris County and was looking forward to many nights and days of open discussion and dialogue with the Senator. I am deeply saddened that those days and nights will never come, but even more grieved that his family will no longer get to see their loved one improve lives of others as he did for them. I will continue to keep the Gallegos family in my prayers as I send out my heartfelt condolences. I am convinced Senator Mario Gallegos will forever smile down not only on Texas, but also his district where he poured out his heart and soul. Rest In Peace Senator…you will be missed.”

SAM “TEJAS” TEXAS SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for Texas State Senate for District 7

By Sam “Tejas” Texas For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“I would be the first state senator to file legislation to help our Houston police chief Charles McClelland, whom I know personally, to have the authority to fire any police officer that breaks the law. Just a few days ago, Ex-officer Abraham Joseph was found guilty of 2 counts of rape. I believe it is time “Policing the Police”. These are not happy days for Harris county law enforcement. We are in a county that is experiencing a pandemic of police lawlessness. It is clear that indefensible brutalities - most of them inflicted on powerless minority victims. There have been over fifty law enforcement officials in Harris County that have been arrested on criminal activities. This must stop. The world saw the beating of the 15 year old Chad Holley by 5 Houston police officers which was caught on video and inspite of the evidence, one of the officers was found not guilty. Justice in Harris county court is a joke. My opponent with his step brother radio talk show host Michael Berry, who was caught drunk driving, ran away from the accident, and was never prosecuted. I believe there is a selective prosecution practice with the district attorney office and the court system. I am ashamed of my opponent, he cut funding to feed our kids, medicaid, and school education. I will restore the funding as the second bill I will file as a State Senator. My opponent guilty of shielding pedophile, John Matthew, his step brother who was a radio talk show host worked for him for about twenty years. My opponent knew that John Matthew’s computer which belonged to both of them for the radio station purpose, containing hundreds of sexually explicit photos, as children as young as 5. My opponent knew that John Matthew was soliciting children online, and he never reported him to the authority. I believe my opponent should be prosecuted for being an accessory to the crime that John Matthew committed. I have met with the FBI, many member of my family work for the justice department, I have requested an investigation against my opponent, I am a private citizen and a tax payer, unlike my opponent, he is a part of the media, he has in the past criticized our president of being a Muslim. My opponent is against Obama Care. I support the health care that the US Congress passed. As someone who was raised in Houston, Texas, since I was 14 years ago, I acknowledged the existence of racism in Houston. Because of our corrupt politician, I have previously filed criminal complaints against who is now a convicted criminal, former Harris county commissioner Eversole. I have also filed a criminal complaint against Steve Raddack for being involved in bribery and criminal activity. I have also in the past filed as many as nineteen complaints against police officers that violated the law against people that I knew in my church. Many of them are Asian women that barely spoke English, these officers were Caucasian. I have lobby in the past, both in the state level and federal level. I know what it takes to pass legislation in Austin that my number one enemy to get elected, is the Houston chronicle and the media. My opponent is part of the media’s establishment.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CODY POGUE SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I’m The Best Candidate for State Representative for House District 127 By Cody Pogue For Your Thought Matters Newspaper “I’m Cody Pogue running for Texas House in district 127. I am the best candidate because I am running on behalf of the future of Texas. My opponent is busy changing his story and fighting for his own political career, but I am not worried about a political career. I am not a politician. I am a teacher. I love teaching, but when my opponent voted to cut education by $5.4 billion, causing 25,000 teachers and school employees to lose their jobs, I said “enough is enough.” I decided to do my civic duty and I am running because I have a plan to fund public schools, I want to stop our addiction to standardized testing, and I want to fight to give Texans the bright future they deserve. I am a 7th generation Texan. My first Texas ancestor fought alongside Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto and I love this state with all of my heart. That’s why I am fighting so hard for it. I hope you will stand with me in fighting for a better tomorrow. We Texans deserve better than what we are getting right now, and our children deserve better, too!”

M.J. KHAN SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for State Representative for House District 137

By M.J. Khan For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “My name is M.J. And in the 2012 General Election I am asking for your vote so that I can represent our southwest Houston values in Austin.” -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SENFRONIA THOMPSON SHARES HER THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for State Representative for House District 141

By Senfronia Thompson For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I feel I am the best candidate for State Representative of House District 141, because I am experienced, effective, and work well with members of both parties. I am the longest serving female and African American member of the Texas House of Representatives. During my tenure in office, I have served on most major House Committees. My service on these committees provides me with experience dealing with major issues. During the last session I passed 39 bills as author or sponsor, on subjects ranging from fighting human trafficking to making sure cities get the sales tax due them. Over the course of my service I have passed over 200 bills improving the lives of

countless Texans. I have always worked with members of both parties for the good of my district and all Texans. Further, as a former public school teacher, a mother, and a grandmother I understand the impact that my decisions and choices have on not only the State of Texas, but on each individual in my district. I have a stake in making sure that our educational system and economy are built for the long term so future generations have a chance at better lives.”

RON LOVETT SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I’m The Best Candidate for Justice, Texas 1st Court of Appeals, Place 2

By Ron Lovett For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “As a native Houstonian and Texan I value the integrity of the bench and the impact such responsibility has on the lives of the people of this great state. I began my career in litigation as a litigation paralegal, and served in that capacity for 10 years until becoming a licensed attorney in 1996. I have spent my entire career representing and fighting for the rights of individuals and their families who have suffered great tragedy and loss in their lives. I represent people, not special interests groups, corporations, or insurance companies. I will restore balance to the Court in order to better serve the people – instead of the special interests that currently influence our system of justice. NATALIA COKINOS OAKES SHARES HER THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for Justice, Texas 1st Court of Appeals, Place 7

By Natalia Cokinos Oakes For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I am the best candidate because I am a serious and thoughtful attorney with experience as a family and juvenile attorney, a teacher and community leader. The 1st Court of Appeals sorely needs justices with diverse views and experience - justices who can provide deeper insight and perspective into the cases before them. Family Law is just one area that is not well represented on the court and is an area of expertise I will impart as justice. I will provide the Court with more insight to the wide variety of cases it considers. Corporations often view a trial as merely a “bump in the road” on the way to the Court of Appeals where, they believe, they are likely to be granted the legal outcome they deserve. A Court of Appeals with justices who reflect only certain segments of the law and population reinforces this belief. The Court must follow the law and be aware of the changing dynamics in today’s society while leaving it to the Legislature to make new law. I will add more balance to the Court and help ensure fairness and equality for the individual, which must not be denied. I have worked on a number of appeals and have practiced law for 12 years. The focus of my practice has been in Family/Juvenile Court handling felonies, misdemeanors, adoptions and family law cases: I understand the law. I have a particular area of expertise in family law which is not well represented on the 1st Court of Appeals. I was officer of Juvenile Law Section of the Houston Bar Association for 3 years as Treasurer, Program Director and President. I brought in speakers for CLE programs: I am organized. I have good community outreach to educate the public about the legal system. The Appellate Courts do not generally have members with this type of background and my experience will add balance to the court: I am diligent. I have been endorsed by my peers in the Pasadena Bar Association and Mexican American Bar Association of Houston. Houston Bar Association does not endorse. We have a golden opportunity during the 2012 elections to level the playing field so that all who come before the Court of Appeals are treated equally.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICHAEL MASSENGALE SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I’m The Best Candidate for Justice, Texas 1st Court of Appeals, Place 8

By Michael Massengale For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “I am honored to have been previously elected to serve the people of Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller, and Washington Counties as a judge on the First Court of Appeals. I believe that the courts should be fair to

all litigants. I also believe that the role of a judge is to apply the law to each case, and not to legislate from the bench. Judges must be constantly vigilant that they do not overstep their role. I believe Texas deserves to have well-qualified, hardworking judges who share this philosophy of judicial restraint. That is why I ask for your support and your vote.”

BRETT BUSBY SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I’m The Best Candidate for Justice, Texas 14th Court of Appeals, Place 3

By Brett Busby For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers I was recently appointed to the 14th Court of Appeals, Place 3, and I am seeking election to a full term. I am asking for your vote to continue serving the public with experience, dedication, and fairness. I have the most relevant experience for this position: I have specialized in appeals for 14 years, and I am Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law. Texas Monthly magazine recently recognized me as one of the top 100 lawyers in Texas. I began my legal career as a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court, and I was a partner at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP before taking the bench. The attorneys in my district were asked to vote anonymously on who is the best candidate for this position, and I am honored that they chose me. I won both the State Bar of Texas Judicial Poll and the Houston Bar Association Preference Poll, and I was overwhelmingly rated the most “well qualified” candidate in this race in the Houston Bar Association Qualification Poll (note: these polls are not endorsements by the bar associations). I have a proven record of fairness: As a lawyer, I represented individuals, small businesses, and large companies as plaintiffs and defendants in a wide variety of civil cases, and I regularly volunteered to provide free legal services in both civil and criminal cases. My record shows that I will stand up for safer neighborhoods, protect your property rights, and defend the Constitution. I have strong support from all parts of the bar and the community, and you may view my list of endorsements and supporters at www.BrettBusby.com.

I believe that a judge must be fair to all parties and apply the law as written, not legislate from the bench. Texans deserve to have wellqualified, hard-working judges who share this philosophy of judicial restraint. That is why I ask for your support and your vote. The Fourteenth Court of Appeals hears appeals of civil, criminal, and family law cases from Harris County as well as Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Waller, and Washington Counties. I appreciate your interest in my campaign, and I am honored to serve you on this Court.” -

JEFF HASTINGS SHARES HIS THOUGHTS

Why I am the best candidate for Harris County District Judge for the 61st District

By Jeff Hastings For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“I, Jeff Hastings, am the best candidate for the 61st District Court because I care. I care about the quality of the Court and believe that the Judge should have the right education and experience to provide justice to all citizens of Harris County. I grew up here in Houston and have a Business degree from the University of Houston and a Law degree from South Texas College of Law — also right here in Houston. At South Texas I tutored at-risk students and graduated in the top 5% of my law school class. For over 20 years I have been representing parties in our civil courts, protecting their rights and seeking justice. I have handled cases involving negligence, products liability, breach of contract, consumer rights, employment discrimination - the very type of cases heard before a District Judge. I care about people. Justice delayed can be justice denied — that is why I will run an efficient court; so that the parties can get to trial without undue delay or expense. I will also be mindful of the important role the Jury has in our justice system and will honor their service by honoring their time, not wasting it. I care about justice for all and I am fully committed to seeing that all that come into the 61st District Court will receive their day in court and an opportunity for unbiased and fair justice. I also care about the Community, that is why I am running for District Judge. I believe in giving back to those in need, that is why I serve as a Deacon in my Church, serve as a coach and mentor to kids teaching them not just the fundamentals of the game but also the fundamentals of life. Please help me raise the expectations of this Court. I humbly ask for your vote and your prayers. For justice, vote Jeff. JeffHastingsforjudge.com. Thank you and my God richly bless you.” -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the son of a Methodist Minister and a trial lawyer, I have the desire to serve my fellow citizens through the law. My personal values are reflected in my mission to insure that all that enter the 125th District Court are treated fairly, and with dignity and respect. The people of Harris County deserve a Judge that they know will listen to them in their time of need, and treat everyone equally regardless of circumstance. Prior to my election as Judge of the 125th Civil District Court, I received invaluable experience working with the Texas Legislature as General Counsel to the Legislative Committee on General Investigating and Ethics for two sessions, as well as the Legislative Committee on Urban Affairs. My experience with the Texas legislative process, coupled with my history as a trial lawyer working on a variety of civil law cases, have given me the knowledge necessary to successfully serve as Judge of the 125th Civil District Court. Over the last three years, I’ve achieved many of my personal goals as your Judge of the 125th Civil District Court. Since 2009, I have presided over more than 5,000 cases to disposition, including over 130 full jury or bench trials. In reclaiming control of my Court’s tax docket, I’ve saved over $30,000 taxpayer dollars per year, as well as increased efficiency at the Harris County District Courthouse. Additionally, I have been honored by my colleagues to serve two very important positions within the Courthouse: Chair to the Civil Court Committee on Special Dockets and Secretary to the Civil Court Board of Judges. While working diligently as your Judge, I’ve also strived to help Harris County grow, save, and gain improved access to our Courts. But, my work inside the Courtroom is only part of my duty as your Judge. I have conducted numerous speaking engagements across the State of Texas as well as to out of state audiences. Most notably, I appeared before the State Bar of Texas, the American Association for Justice, as well as the Houston Trial Lawyers Association speaking on many important issues facing our Harris County legal system. In addition to my leadership in the legal field, I strive to answer the most important call of all by serving the needs of the community through service and outreach. As a father of three wonderful children, I know the importance of educating our county’s youth about the role and importance of the judicial branch. In an effort to educate, I began Judges at Work in Schools, a charitable organization designed to link the Courtroom to the Classroom. Personally, I’ve spoken at over a dozen schools in our County, and rallied my colleagues to do the same. A vote for me is an investment in Harris County’s future, both inside and outside of the Courthouse. With your vote and support, we can keep the power of the court in the hands of the citizens.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MICHAEL LANDRUM SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for Harris County District Judge for the 129th District

By Michael Landrum For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “My name is Michael Landrum and I am the Republican candidate for Judge of the 129th Civil District Court. The incumbent is Michael Gomez, who defeated Judge Grant Dorfman in the 2008 election. Judge Dorfman has graciously endorsed me in this race. I believe in our civil justice system. I believe that impartial courts and competent judges are essential to the success of free market capitalism, as business depends on the consistent and fair application of known and understood legal principles. A judge’s rulings can have a direct impact in the lives of your family and friends. It is critical

that our judges are highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated to impartially following the law. I respectfully say that I am the best qualified - most experienced candidate. For over three decades, I have worked hard representing individuals and small businesses in State and Federal trial and appellate courts. I have worked hard to obtain specialty certification in two fields of legal specialty relating to the matters heard in a civil district court: my Civil Trial Law certification was awarded in 1989 and my Civil Appellate Law certification was awarded in 1995 by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. My opponent has not been awarded a specialty in any area of law. I am also former presiding tax master in Harris County tax court. Perhaps the Houston Chronicle said it best in its September 20 endorsement:

Michael Landrum has an impressive level of experience, training and background that make him a prime candidate for this bench. He has practiced law for 35 years and is board-certified in both civil trial law and civil appellate law. He has also served as a tax master for the county’s civil courts, including the 129th. These years of in-depth work in our courtrooms have granted him a balanced view on the role of judges. I am also honored to have been endorsed by the Pasadena Bar Association, the Association of Women Attorneys of Houston, and I was preferred by a majority of the attorneys voting in this year’s Houston Bar Association preference poll. If elected, I will work hard every day to make sure that the cases in the 129th District Court are managed promptly and carefully, and that all parties will receive a fair hearing without regard to race, religion, partisan affiliation or economic status. I volunteer my time serving as counsel to Crossroads School, a private school that specializes in educating children with special needs. I have lectured in continuing legal education seminars, including presentations to Harris County judges. I volunteer as a judge in student competitions at South Texas College of Law. My wife, Mary Grace, and I have been active in local schools, the Spring Branch Education Foundation, our church, and other community activities. In years past, I coached little league basketball and soccer. I would be honored to have your vote.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My diverse and broad-based practice provides experience in depositions, pre-trial motions, trial, mediations, arbitrations and settlements in simple to complex, multi-party litigation including class actions. I am the head of the men’s ministry at Memorial Drive Baptist Church. I am a volunteer mediator in healthcare and elder care, family and employment disputes for the Better Business Bureau, EEOC. I do pro bono mediation, counseling and ombudsman assignments involving nursing home conflicts. I am the most qualified candidate for the 152nd District Court because of my advanced education, certifications, military leadership, depth and breadth of my legal experience and my community service. I continue to update my education and stay involved in the community in a leadership position.

By Robert Summerlin For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers

“The 174th Criminal District Court has one of the highest number of pending cases of all the 22 Felony Courts. Harris County citizens (victims, their families and Defendants) deserve to have these cases resolved promptly, efficiently and fairly. Because of my work ethic and knowledge, I am routinely appointed by Judges (Democrats and Republicans) to represent indigent defendants. I have the unique ability to see both sides of an argument and the knowledge to understand that there are grey areas in every case. I am a hard worker (worked full-time and went to school at night) who is not afraid to accept responsibility and who is uniquely equipped to handle criminal cases. I received my undergraduate degree from Rice University and my doctorate degree from South Texas College of Law. I am confident that my background and experience has prepared me to serve as an independent, impartial and fair judge. I possess extensive knowledge and experience with the law, which is essential for a Harris County Criminal Judge. I believe that judges should establish, maintain and enforce high standards of conduct and should personally observe these standards so that the integrity and independence of the judiciary is preserved. I believe that judges have a responsibility to the people who elect them and should be faithful to the law, maintain professional competence in it, require order and decorum in proceedings, be patient, dignified and courteous to litigant, jurors, witnesses, lawyers and others whom the judge deals with in an official capacity. ROGER BRIDGWATER SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for Harris County District Judge for the 178th District

By Roger Bridgwater For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “While in College, I had various summer jobs that included being a porter at a 600-unit apartment complex, a fitter’s helper, a tack-welder, and construction worker. During the school year I held jobs including head resident for a men’s dorm, porter at a car dealership, and graphic arts handyman as part of my work-study financial aid. After graduating from Sam Houston State University in May 1975, I went to work in the Harris County Criminal District Clerk’s Office where I was the chief clerk for cuts 2 & 8. In January 1978 I became the court coordinator for the 232nd Criminal District Court and I believe these jobs gave me not only great exposure to the criminal courts of Harris County, but honed my skills of working with the full range of personalities. My interpersonal skills, due to my temperament and upbringing, lead me to be polite, respectful, and compassionate of all people. My Judeo-Christian principles and leadership roles throughout my life have taught me to discern truth and falsities as well as confident humility in addressing the circumstances of people in all ranges and socioeconomic levels. I have worked in the Harris County Criminal Courts since 1975 when I worked full time for Ray Hardy in the District Clerk’s Office during the day and attended South Texas College of Law at night. I completed South Texas in 3 years by taking courses at night and on Saturdays. It was a full load, but I had a goal to be a lawyer and was willing to work hard to obtain it. When I graduated Law School, Carol Vance hired me, the then Harris County District Attorney. Following his retirement, Johnny Holmes kept me on in his office as well. In 1983 I left the DA’s office and went to work for a small civil firm that specialized in real estate and business transactions. A few years later I

went out on my own and started Law Offices of Roger Bridgwater. I was in private practice for 22 years until receiving the Governor’s appointment. After the dust settled from the 2008 election, and finding myself as one of the many judges voted out of office, Judge Pat Lykos called me and asked me if I’d serve on her transition team and stay on to be one of her 5 Bureau Chiefs. I considered it an honor and a Godsend. I oversee the continuing education and training for all the ADA’s on the Office. I also supervise all the adas in the 15 Misdemeanor Courts, those in Crimes Against Children, or in Family Violence, as well as areas Judge Lykos created such as Crimes Against the Elderly, Child Exploitation, and Mental Health. I also direct DIVERT, the DWI diversion program.”

LOUIS GUTHRIE SHARES HIS THOUGHTS: Why I am the best candidate for Harris County Sheriff

By Louis Guthrie For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “The position of Sheriff is critical; effecting the safety and quality of life of every citizen. More importantly, the job of Sheriff is more than a political position. Every day there are lives on the line, and the Sheriff does not have the luxury of delegating decisions to a committee or passing blame on another political party. This is not a job for a politician; it’s a job for a Lawman.Right now Harris County is becoming a dangerous place. We are a major hub for both drug and human trafficking and with this comes a very bold and violent criminal element. This culture of lawlessness has grown under my opponent’s watch and it will take decisive leadership (which he has not shown) and command experience (that he does not have) to confront this growing threat. For 22 years I have served as a County Police Officer with experience supervising and commanding in almost every area of Law Enforcement. During that time I have made the tough leadership decisions based on two things; the law and what best protects the citizens of Harris County. This is not always popular but it works when your job is to protect citizens not seek higher political office. My opponent is a politician and therefore his decision making is clouded with politics. He has demonstrated this over and over again while he served as Sheriff. Examples of these frivols and political decisions are funding grandiose technology programs like iWatch, boutique task forces like Safe Home Task Force and feel good groups like the Employee Relationship Council; each taking vital manpower and funds from the primary mission of basic law enforcement services. As your next Sheriff, I will make it a priority to put MORE DEPUTIES ON THE STREET TO REDUCE CRIME, CUT UNNECESSARY SPENDING, and PROPERLY STAFF THE 911 CALL CENTER TO ASSURE THAT YOUR CALL WILL BE ANSWERED. Our quality of life in Harris County requires a stable economy, safe streets and neighborhoods and an optimistic vision of the future. As Sheriff I know that in order to maintain this quality of life we must dedicate ourselves to meeting this challenge head on; never accepting crime at any level. Why I am the best candidate for Harris County School Trustee Position 6, Precinct #1

By Juluette Bartlett-Pack Ph.D For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “If the students, parents, and teachers of Harris County want the only qualified candidate to represent them on the Harris County Board of Education, Precinct 1, Position 6 then I am that candidate. I come to offer the citizens of Harris County a bold proposition. One that is honest and forthright rather than sugar-coated and laced with political jargon that sounds appealing yet lacks in substance. I come with a proposition for restoration of quality education in Harris County. We live in an era where promises are made to be broken and quantity takes precedence over quality. I say it is time for a bold change. I am Dr. Juluette Bartlett-Pack, and I want to lead this restoration as a member of the Harris County Board of Education. Therefore, I want to use my education, experience, and expertise to serve the students, parents, and teachers in Harris County. I want to restore character through discipline in academics, critical thinking, and performance; restore students learning the basics of math, reading and writing, and science; and restore pride in students through increasing graduate rates. Developing character in students is a necessary step in producing students who leave high school ready for higher education, entrepreneurship, careers, and jobs in skilled trades. According to University of Missouri teaching professor David Light Shields’ article Character as the Aim of Education, “there are multiple dimensions of character that education should develop, including intellectual, moral, civic, and performance character” (Shields, 2011). How can we develop intellectual character? Intellectual character is built by encouraging thinking rather than demanding factual regurgitation that only serve to stifle free thinking (critical thinking) and creativity. To build intellectual character in our children, we must not teach them what to think, but how to think. We can accomplish this step by giving them the proper tools with which to think—be they technological, intellectual, literary, or tangible in nature. Once our children have these tools at their disposal, they will, with careful guidance and nurturing of their teachers, parents, and others in leadership roles in the community, be able to accomplish the unimaginable. Not only is intellectual character desired, but moral character is also necessary. How can we develop moral character? Moral character is built on decision making and experience. Thus, we must teach our children how to make good decisions as well as show them, in their own experiences, how every action has a consequence. By doing so, we enable them to learn first-hand how to differentiate between positive and negative consequences and how to achieve their desired outcomes by making good decisions. When children learn the value of making good decisions as well as the vital lessons that should follow from being disciplined in many areas, they are more prepared to deal with the world around them. I have shared with you a portion of my vision to restore education in Harris County schools. I am running for a position on the board to use my education, experience, and expertise as an educator to help develop and support policies that will benefit the students, parents, and teachers in Harris County. I ask for your vote. “

ERICA S. LEE SHARES HER THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for Harris County School Trustee Position 6, Precinct #1

By Erica Lee For Your Thought Matters Readers I seek to serve as a Trustee on the Harris County Board of Education because I believe all children deserve a quality education. I am committed to bringing quality education to Harris County Precinct 1 and plan to use my experiences within local, state, and federal levels of government to do so. I am committed to improving the education quality for students in Harris County. I truly believe that none

of our children are throwaways and they all deserve opportunity. If elected to serve as a Trustee on the Harris County Board of Education, I plan to ensure that our system focuses on: • Quality professional development and support for our teachers and school leaders in Harris County. • Quality implementation of educational services and enrichment programs for students. • Quality management of the community’s financial resources. • Quality outreach to and partnerships throughout our communities including the 26 ISDs and charter schools in Harris County. In addition to being a former HISD teacher, I have worked for the state government finance contributing to the development of a $21 Billion education budget and navigated the complex federal legislative process. My educational background includes a Masters of Public Policy, Duke University, Terry Sanford School of Public Policy and B.A. with Honors, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have expertise in the legislative process and how the state and federal government work with local school boards like the County Board to institute education policy. As Trustee, I will apply all of this expertise and know-how to improve the delivery of education services for our children. For those who are unfamiliar with the board, the Harris County Board of Education Board ensures accountability for our public tax dollars. The Department saves districts money through sharing resources, improved efficiency and collaborating on best practices. Students benefit from high quality services like early intervention, after schooling and continued education. As a Trustee, it would be my mission to expand the outreach, accessibility and quality service delivery of the Harris County Department of Education beyond its traditional targets to ensure our highest needs communities benefit from its services and resources. I believe I am the most qualified candidate because I combine high-level policy-making and budget expertise with a deep passion for changing education outcomes for our children. I am the only candidate with federal, state and local policy-making experience. I have worked as a budget analyst for one of the nation’s largest democratic states- New York. In this role, I created complex budget formulas for the state’s public schools and supported the drafting of key legislation to expand pre-kindergarten and protect high needs districts. I am a passionate advocate for children who will bring my skills, expertise and democratic values to my role as a Harris County Board of Education Trustee.

ALAN ROSEN SHARES HIS THOUGHTS:

Why I am the best candidate for Harris County Constable for Precinct #1

By Alan Rosen For Your Thought Matters Newspaper Readers “The citizens of Precinct 1 deserve a Constable with the proven law enforcement, management and community experience to move the Constable’s Office to a higher level of service and accountability. That is why I’m the best choice for Precinct 1 Constable. I’m a 21- year law enforcement veteran with the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. I’m also an honors graduate in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston, and the only candidate in the race with direct patrol, management and budgetary experience. I’ve earned the endorsement of the Houston Chronicle, and top cops including former police chiefs Mayor Lee P. Brown, Councilmember C. O. Bradford, the Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Organization, the Afro-American Sheriff’s Deputy League, and the Houston Police Officers’ Union. I currently serves as a Major and Commander of the Special Operations Bureau for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office managing criminal warrants, fugitive warrants, the child predator apprehension team, sex offender tracking team and the. Tactical Medical Team (Tac Medics), an elite team of Emergency Room Physicians and Paramedics who all have police and S.W.A.T. training. Under my leadership Harris County developed and instituted the Child Predator Apprehension Team, and warrant apprehension rates have increased 161% and capture rates for the increased by impressive numbers. Currently, the Child Predator Apprehension Team (CPAT) maintains an 84% capture rate. As Commander of the Sex Offender Registration Tracking Team (SORT), my subordinates and I ensure that registered sex offenders are where they are supposed to be while conducting field interviews and surveying the entire home and work place during visits. I began my law enforcement as a deputy sheriff. Working in the jail operations, I became well acquainted with policy issues and detention process, and the penal side of the job. Later, transferring to Harris County Law Enforcement, my experience and knowledge of the law expanded my work with the county enhancing my insight, and compassion into the depth and tragedy of the issues facing the incarcerated including mental illness and other problems. My experience at the jail has given me a better understanding of how law enforcement can make a difference in the lives of those at a critical crossroads. In addition to seeing people who needed detention, I saw people who needed help not just punishment.” Transferring to the Patrol Division, I learned to solve crimes by listening to what people said…and what they didn’t say, we were able talk with members of the community, witness what was happening, then go in and make the arrest. Working in narcotics, I was assigned to work on an Undercover Narcotics Street Task Force, purchasing narcotics on the street in an effort to track down the major traffickers supplying the street dealers. I reside in the Constable Precinct One with my wife of 20 years and my three children. I’m deeply committed to keeping families safe, addressing environmental issues and improving the quality of life for all residents of Harris County Constable District Precinct One.”

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Who are you endorsing for President? Answer this question at: www.aubreyrtaylor.blogspot.com

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others. With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton’s army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank. After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants. He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Upon graduation, he returned to Chicago to help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the

University of Chicago, and remain active in his community. President Obama’s years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the Illinois State Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreaking lobbying reform, lock up the world’s most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending online. He was elected the 44th President of the United States on November 4, 2008, and sworn in on January 20, 2009. He and his wife, Michelle, are the proud parents of two daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Who are you endorsing for President? Answer this question at: www.aubreyrtaylor.blogspot.com A LITTLE ABOUT MITT ROMNEY

Mitt was born in Detroit on March 12, 1947. His mother, Lenore, gave up an acting career when she met and married his father, George. Mitt’s father came from humble origins and never graduated from college. He apprenticed as a lath and plaster carpenter and sold aluminum paint before beginning a career that brought him to the head of American Motors and then the governorship of Michigan.

Mitt married his wife, Ann, in 1969. They first met in elementary school when he was a Cub Scout; he remembers tossing pebbles at her when she rode by on a horse. When they met again years later at a friend’s house, he was smitten. Between them, they have five sons and eighteen grandchildren, who are the center of their lives.

Mitt Romney: Introduction

Like any family, the Romneys have faced hardship: Ann was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998, and more recently fought a battle with breast cancer. She credits her husband’s unwavering care and devotion to her for helping her through these ordeals. Mitt is not a career politician. He has spent most of his life in the private sector, giving him intimate knowledge of how our economy works. But he has also been an outstanding

public servant. In one chapter of his distinguished career, he reversed the decline of a state mired in recession. In another chapter, he salvaged the 2002 Winter Olympic Games from certain disaster. America faces exceptional challenges. Mitt Romney is an exceptional man with unique qualifications to lead our country through perilous times, restoring our strength at home and abroad.

—GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS

When Mitt was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2002, the state was in severe disarray, its budget was out of balance, spending was soaring, and taxpayers were being required to pay more and more in taxes for diminishing services. The state economy was in a tailspin, with businesses cutting back on investment or even closing, and unemployment ticking up. Mitt made hard decisions that brought state spending under control. He restructured and consolidated government programs, paring back where necessary and finding efficiencies throughout. Facing a state legislature dominated by Democrats, Mitt cast more than 800 vetoes as he brought conservative principles to state government. He cut red tape for small businesses, signed into law job-creating incentives, and fought hard to bring new businesses to the state. He eliminated a $3 billion deficit without borrowing or raising taxes. By 2007, at the end of Mitt’s term, the state had accumulated a $2 billion rainy day fund in its coffers. This stringent fiscal discipline provided an essential backdrop for economic recovery. While Mitt was in office, the state unemployment rate fell from 5.6% to 4.7% and the Massachusetts economy added tens of thousands of new jobs. America faces exceptional challenges. Mitt

Romney is an exceptional man with unique qualifications to lead our country through perilous times, restoring our strength at home and abroad.

—2002 WINTER OLYMPICS

In 1999, the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics was on the verge of collapse. Thanks to his reputation as a superb manager, Mitt was asked to take over. The event had been bogged down in a bid-rigging scandal, sponsors were fleeing, and the budget was bleeding red ink. The attacks of September 11, 2001, just months before the start date, created a security nightmare. Some were contemplating scaling back the competition or even moving it out of the country. Mitt set to work. In a remarkably short period, he revamped the organization’s leadership, trimmed the budget, and restored public confidence. He oversaw an unprecedented security mobilization to assure the safety of the athletes and millions of international visitors,

staging one of the most successful games ever held on U.S. soil. Mitt’s impressive skills did not come out of nowhere. He began his career in business.

—A STERLING BUSINESS CAREER

After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1971, he earned dual degrees from Harvard Law and Harvard Business School. After working as a business consultant for several years, Mitt founded the investment firm Bain Capital in 1984. Under his leadership, Bain Capital helped to launch or rebuild over one hundred companies, including household names such as Staples, Bright Horizons, and The Sports Authority. As Bain Capital was growing in prominence, Mitt returned to his old consulting firm, Bain & Company, as CEO. In a time of financial turmoil at the company, he led a successful turnaround.

LEADERSHIP

SUPREME COURT JUSTICE WALLACE B. JEFFERSON: “The public benefits from a steady hand during a time of crisis — someone dedicated to evaluating whatever emergency is presented, conferring with all affected, and then making clear decisions together with contingency plans for unanticipated complications.”

FORMER HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF THOMAS: “Good leadership during times of crisis is especially important because the qualities good leaders possess give others confidence, provide direction and ease concerns related to the crisis. Good leaders possess many important qualities: a.) Honesty and integrity. b.) The ability to inspire others. c.) A vision for the future and the know-how to get the job done. d.) Qualifications and experience. e.) Good communication and organizational skills. f.) Ability to delegate.”

CURRENT SHERIFF ADRIAN GARCIA: “Good leadership is always critical not just during a crisis. However, the public and employees need to know that they have someone they can follow when they most need direction. Leadership should be visible and engaged, making the most difficult decisions. I saw this in Mayor Bill White during and after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike. Effective leadership makes citizens feel protected before, during and after a critical incident.”

FORMER STATE SENATOR MIKE JACKSON: “Good leadership is crucial in times of crisis. We saw how smoothly the Hurricane Ike evacuation was handled by our local emergency management officials and we were therefore able to avoid massive amounts of loss of life because of it. As a leader you sometimes have to know when to get in front of a camera and when that isn’t necessary. For the most part, my work during the Hurricane focused on providing some of our local jurisdictions the state resources they needed during the aftermath because our local authorities did such a fabulous job.”

LEADERSHIP

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE ED EMMETT: “Leadership is critical during times of crisis, but effective leadership is born of preparation. The best leader with great instincts and skills will only be successful if he is prepared.”

OUTGOING HARRIS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PAT LYKOS: “Leadership is vital to swift assessment, rapid response, optimizing use of resources, adaptation to changing circumstances and minimizing collateral damage in controlling a crisis. Leaders should always demonstrate a calm confidence and be decisive. The effective enforcement of our criminal laws is essential to keeping the social fabric intact, which is based upon law and order and the rule of law. As Drucker said, “Leaders do the right things and managers do things right.” Good leaders hold themselves accountable first, and then their subordinates.”

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY ATTORNEY VINCE RYAN: “I believe that in times of crisis “great” leadership is necessary. Certainly, war is one example. My training and experiences in my twenty eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve, including Vietnam and Panama during Operation Just Cause, taught me much about leadership in times of crisis. Primarily, a leader in all circumstances must lead by example, especially in times of crisis.”

FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD J (RICK) NORIEGA: “In their land navigation training, my soldiers learn that if you’re off course a couple of degrees for a short distance, it doesn’t matter too much. But if you’re off course for a good while, then the divide from where you are and where you should be is so great that it is nearly impossible to get back on the right course.”

QUESTION: WHO ARE YOU ENDORSING IN THE 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?

LEADERSHIP

OUTGOING HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE STEVEN E. KIRKLAND: “Leadership is critical to survival in times of crisis. Great leadership changes survival to transformation. We have witnessed transformational moments in our history with Franklin Delano Roosevelt transforming the US with the New Deal and Martin Luther King inspiring us to dream of the promised land.”

FORMER GALVESTON MAYOR JAWORSKI: “Leadership is critical during these uncertain times because the solutions to the challenges we face require broad public support to be effective...”

FORMER HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE ROGER BRIDGWATER: “It is the difference between success and failure. Besides giving direction, a leader gives confidence, inspires others to trust and join the team.”

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY COMMISSIONER STEVE RADACK: “Good leadership is always vital during a crisis. But we must put the word “crisis” in perspective. Harris County consists of nearly 4 million residents. It is safe to say that every second there is someone experiencing a crisis in their life. It could be one of the thousands of children abused annually, or a senior citizen struggling to pay the light bill while facing a mountain of medical expenses. It could be one of the hundreds of thousands of people treated at the Harris County Hospital District each year. Leaders come in all shapes and forms. As a leader, my best work is to make sure other leaders in the community have the tools they need to help all these people 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The people of Harris County are dynamic and challenges are always present. Leaders, like those on Harris County Commissioners Court, find a way to make sure the community has the tools to deal with whatever confronts the people we serve.”

When complete, the facility will include water processing, bottle manufacturing, warehousing and a distribution facility. The local plant will be the company’s 12th location countrywide, and will serve an expansive regional market for private label bottled water. Headquartered in Ontario, California, Niagara has bottling plants in eight states including Texas. The 168-acre Lakeview Business Park, located adjacent to major thoroughfares such as the Sam Houston Parkway, Highway 90A and U.S. Highway 59, is currently home to manufacturing and distribution companies representing a variety of industries. Following the purchase of land by Niagara, Lakeview developer Trammell Crow will add $2.75 million in drainage and road improvements to the business park. Missouri City has three years to reimburse Trammell Crow for these improvements and will do so with Metro sales tax rebates earmarked to be used for general mobility projects. The water and sewer improvements will be managed and reimbursed through WCID No. 2.

Taking Healthy Strides

Residents, City Council Members, police officers, firefighters and local officials united Tuesday night to promote public safety and fitness during National Night Out. Hundreds of people gathered with their neighbors to host block parties, and this year, as the City participates in a statewide health initiative—the Healthy at H-E-B Community Challenge— many communities incorporated a healthy aspect in their events. Citizens mixed and mingled during their crime prevention gatherings and many shared healthy snacks including Subway sandwiches and fruit and vegetable trays. Police officers, firefighters and City Council Members visited block parties, reminding homeowners of the importance of getting to know their neighbors and making sure their homes are safe. National Night Out correlated perfectly with the healthy challenge, which encourages health and fitness in all aspects of life, and Missouri City continues to be a strong contender a month into the competition. The “Show Me City” is currently in second place in its category (cities with populations ranging from 0-100,000) in the Healthy at H-E-B Community Challenge. For the past few weeks, the Show Me City has trailed the City of Pflugerville, however; each has owned the No. 1 spot for short intervals. To engage citizens, Missouri City has some fun and exciting events planned as part of its participation. All residents are encouraged to take part in: Missouri City Police Officers Association’s Kids’ 5K Zombie

Dash: Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Missouri City Police Department 7 a.m. Tricks & Treats in the Park: Saturday, Oct. 27 at Buffalo Run Park 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Residents are encouraged to visit the Challenge website to sign up and share their healthy activities, thereby building our community’s overall score. An email address is the only requirement to sign up. Watch this video to see details on how to register. Missouri City kicked off its participation in the program on Saturday, Sept. 15, with a Health Fair and Tennis Play Day that attracted about 200 people of all ages to its new Recreation and Tennis Center. City officials were also on hand to support the initiative: Mayor Allen Owen, Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Wyatt and Council Members Danny Nguyen and Floyd Emery visited with the guests. Visitors were treated to cooking demonstrations, a farmers market, fitness classes, XBOX 360 Fitness, massages and spinal checks. H-E-B Sienna’s pharmacy also gave flu shots. Among the other vendors were H-E-B Sienna Market, Houston Community College-Missouri City Campus, and Sienna Modern Dentistry. “With this event, Missouri City and its partners took a giant step in encouraging citizens to be active and to live a healthy lifestyle,” Director of Parks & Recreation Larry Foos said. To follow the City’s progress in the Challenge, visit the City website: www.missouricitytx.gov, join the Twitter conversation #ItsTimeMCTX and watch Missouri City Television (Ch. 16 on Comcast and Ch. 99 on AT&T U-verse).

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY JUDGE DAVID MENDOZA: “Good leadership is of paramount importance in times of crisis. People want answers, people want leaders who have a vision and who produce good results for their constituents.”

During a crisis, a leader’s character is put to the ultimate test and their ability to lead must be an example for all who follow, uniting others to work for the greater good of all. A leader must be able to recognize the source of the crisis, ascertain available resources and then determine the most appropriate solution; then he or she must be strong and wise enough to efficiently and effectively implement that solution.” NOTE: C.O. Bradford is currently serving on Houston City Council.

CURRENT HARRIS COUNTY CONSTABLE KEN JONES: “Good leadership is critical, not only to lead your department, but also the community you serve.”

CURRENT STATE REPRESENTATIVE DWAYNE BOHAC: “Leadership during time of crisis is absolutely vital to our community and state. During my time in the legislature, I have always handled tough situations with one question in mind: “What is best for my district?” Having this mindset helps keep me calm and enables me to take on challenges and tough votes knowing that I am doing what I think is absolutely best for my district, no matter the situation.”

FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE ELLEN COHEN: “Good leadership works if it is consistent. Leaders must demonstrate the same qualities during calm times as well as crises. Knowing that your leader can be counted on for steady and honest direction gives one a sense of confidence.” NOTE: Ellen Cohen is currently serving on Houston City Council.
