Help Blue Cure raise awareness of prostate cancer in men by donating

Blue Cure supporters across the globe show their devotion to the cause by raising awareness and sharing the mission of Blue Cure!

Why Blue Cure? Here are the facts:

One out of two men in America will be diagnosed with cancer. One out of three women in America will be diagnosed with cancer. One out of four Americans will lose their lives to cancer.

This year, more than four decades since America launched its “war on cancer,” more than 580,000 Americans are expected to die from the disease. That’s almost 1,600 moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons – who die— per day. Clearly, that 40-year war on cancer is far from complete. The National Cancer Institute has invested more than $90 billion on research and treatment. The spending on cancer drugs continues to soar, and is estimated to reach $173 billion by 2020. Meanwhile, millions keep dying — why? FACT: Many don’t have to die. In fact, they shouldn’t even get Gabe Canales cancer in the first place. More than Founder half of all cancers

are preventable — through exercise, a healthy diet and smart lifestyle choices, such as stress management and avoiding environmental toxins. Blue Cure is dedicated to saving these lives — now. Our preventative approach to prostate cancer also can benefit others and save lives.

Prostate Cancer FACTS:

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed “male cancer” in America. The U.S. has the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world. In fact, it’s 15 times that of Asia, including Japan, China, and India. World-renowned doctors have avowed prostate cancer is a disease of the West, largely brought about by “Western lifestyle.”

Prostate Cancer: Not Just An Old Man’s Cancer

Gabe Canales was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 35. He hadn’t given any thought to prostate cancer nor did he have any knowledge about prostate cancer before his diagnosis. He was not educated on the role of the prostate, prostate health, prostate cancer and prostate cancer prevention. He soon found the same ignorance among his male friends in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Gabe had no family history of prostate cancer or any other cancer, but at the time of his diagnosis, Gabe had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a high body fat percentage, as well as a strong family history of chronic health diseases like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. What was the connection? Once Gabe was diagnosed, he didn’t know where to turn to for resources or support. After meeting with doctors and plunging into research, Gabe started getting educated on the carcinogens (cancer causing agents) all around us in everyday life. He also began questioning the role of chemicals and agents in our foods, such as hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and larvicides. He grew leery of genetically modified foods, the pollution in our air, household contaminants, body care products, the chemicals in our water, dry cleaning, sofas, mattresses and the chemicals all around us. All these unnatural causes with clear preventions underscored the catastrophic neglect involved in one out of two American men and one out of three American women being diagnosed with cancer — cancer from which one in four will die. This must stop — and this can stop. We’ve allowed cancer to become our “new normal” – the winner- for far too long by continuing to place focus on treatment and cures, with little regard for steps that can be taken and proven prevention.

We’re Beyond “Awareness”

There’s a huge difference between creating awareness and changing the way people think. Many cancer nonprofits have awareness campaigns, but we’re already well aware of the word “cancer,” and many men have heard the words “prostate cancer.” The urgent need isn’t for such awareness but for changing the way people <em >think about prostate cancer. We must educate to save lives. America has to buy into a preventative mindset. The Need to Educate, for Prevention Research, for Blue Cure

If we apply and utilize the knowledge or information we know right now, more than half of all cancers can be prevented. Blue Cure’s mission is to provide such education toward prostate cancer prevention — prevention which also can be proactive in reducing risks of other cancers, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. What we know right now isn’t enough. We must advocate for more research on prevention so we may have definitive answers on causes of cancers, as well as what we add or subtract to diet and lifestyle to reduce cancers and enhance outcomes for those diagnosed with cancer. That’s why Blue Cure advocates increased funding for prevention research in the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget. In view of America’s dramatic rise in obesity, the enormous spike in youths’ chronic health woes and the shameful reduced funding for physical education in schools, Blue Cure aims to reach younger men with an urgent message of prevention. To do so, Blue Cure will partner with city leaders, school districts and colleges across the country. Blue Cure also can help people learn how to live with prostate cancer diagnoses by adopting an integrative approach combining holistic therapies with conventional medicine. Blue Cure can provide support for those on the prostate cancer journey just as other cancer survivors have received from diagnosed men to caregivers and loved ones.

What is Blue Cure? Blue Cure’s Mission:

Blue Cure® is a lifestyle movement whose goal is to educate men, young and old, about preventing prostate cancer and chronic disease, and to offer support for those affected by prostate cancer.

Mayor Annise Parker, Currently Only the Second Woman to serve as Houston’s Chief Executive takes a Moment to Share Her Thoughts on The Importance of Voting

“I remember voting as a kid with my parents. That was back in the days when you walked into a voting booth, pulled a red curtain behind you, picked your candidates and pulled a lever to cast your ballot. My parents took me every November, and I’ve gone every year as an adult. It’s important to vote for many reasons, but I’ll focus on three.

1) It’s the only opportunity we have, as citizens, to hold our elected officials accountable to the promises they make to us when they’re running for office. I’ve been elected eight times now, so I know that when I make a promise on the campaign trail, voters are listening, and voters will remind me of my promises when I come back in two years.

2) Someone said to me recently – if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu. Elected officials make very important decisions about how your money is spent and what limits are placed on your life. It’s important that your elected officials know that you care about your rights and your money – and the best way to show them that you care is to vote.

3) And finally, 150 years ago, voting was reserved for a privileged few. African Americans and women risked their lives fighting for the right to vote. They won in 1870 and 1920, respectively. That isn’t very long ago, and every election I am proud to honor those brave civil rights activists by heading to the polls and casting a ballot.”

Sincerely,

Annise Parker The 61st Mayor of Houston, Texas

Houston City Controller Ronald C. Green Shares His Thoughts on the Importance of Participating in Local Elections

“In times like these it is important that all who can vote should exercise their right to. Not at any moment in our time has our country been so politically polarized, we have gun law bills, budget and deficit issues, the issues that are currently being discussed in Washington have a trickle-down effect to cities and local municipalities. It is important that we have the right leadership in place so that our city is ready to handle those problems. Locally, our economy, public project initiatives and quality of life all depend on the representation YOU the citizen vote for. The City of Houston’s leadership helps in making decisions that make sure that the aforementioned are available to you. That is why it is important for you to participate in local elections. In no other elections, state or nationally, can you personally hold your elected official accountable for the well being of the city that you live in. You want and need responsible men and women to make sure that your taxes are being put to good use, whether you are Republican or Democrat. We need YOU to help Houston thrive as a city, we need YOU to ensure Houston has the quality of life for families and visitors to enjoy and prosper in. Your vote helps in achieving those goals.” Sincerely,

Ronald C. Green Houston City Controller

City of Houston Mayor Pro-Tem, District H Council Member Ed Gonzalez Shares His Thoughts on Why Voting Matters

“Voting is a fundamental right granted to us by our forefathers, it is a right that sets our nation apart from many in the world, and it is a right that I encourage all citizens to exercise. Elections impact who represents us at every level of government, those representatives are the individuals that advocate for the needs of our communities, of our families, and of our future generations. Electing a representative ensures that your voice is heard at City Hall, at the State Capitol, and in Washington D.C. As a local elected official, I take pride in fighting for the needs of the District H constituents that I represent. Keeping our neighborhoods safe, ensuring that our roads are in good condition, increasing the amount of greenspace in the community, and encouraging economic development are some of my main priorities. I know that I was elected to serve my community and I strive to listen to its needs each and every single day. I sincerely hope that all voters will take time to cast a ballot, particularly during a local election. Our government is only as good as the people that we send to represent us. Make sure that you head to the voting booth and continue to make your voice heard.” Sincerely, Sincerely,

Ed Gonzalez Mayor Pro-Tem, City of Houston

Houston City Council Member Andrew C. Burks Shares His Thoughts On The Importance of Participating In Local Elections

Houston City Council Member Ed Gonzalez is currently serving his second term in office. He will be seeking to serve his third and final term as the Houston City Council District H representative on the November 2013 ballot.

“Exercising your right to vote in local elections gives you a powerful voice in the issues that directly impact our family. When we think about the political decisions that make the greatest differences in our lives, we often think about Washington, D.C. But the truth is that some of the decisions that have the largest impact on us are made at City Hall.

The brave police officers and fire fighters keeping us safe depend upon responsible local elected officials to ensure they are effective. The roads we drive on, the water we drink, and the parks and libraries our families use are all maintained by your local elected officials.

The services we use most are local. That is why it is important to participate in local elections. When you have a concern, it is your locally elected officials who are the most responsive. As members of the community, mayors and council members are more in touch with the everyday needs of our neighbors. As a voter, you want to ensure that the services impacting you the most are in the hands of someone you can trust and who understands your needs.

Your vote makes its biggest difference in local elections. Low turnout in local races means your voice is louder and stronger. Your participation ensures your needs are represented and that our city will remain a great place to call home for generations to come.”

Houston City Council District C Representative Ellen Cohen Takes A Moment to Share Her Thoughts On The Importance of Voting

“Democracy is the cornerstone of our country from the federal level down to the local level. I was raised to believe that democracy means “one person, one vote,” and that exercising your vote is a responsibility as well as a right. In a politically polarized nation, making your voice heard from the ballot box becomes even more urgent.

In Houston, though voter turnout in our last national election (2012) was above 60%, unfortunately, in our last local election (2011) turnout was less than 15%. This is particularly regrettable because all politics is local. Local government is responsible for the most immediate concerns of our citizens’ daily lives. From streets to parks to libraries to water, your local government officials make or influence the policy decisions that impact our lives. Consequently, holding elected officials accountable for their decisions is vital to a well-functioning city, state, or nation.

Furthermore, particularly in a local election, every vote is critical. Elections that are determined by 10, 100, or 500 votes are more common than many citizens are aware. Since a small voting pool magnifies the effect of a singular vote, participating in a local election can have a great impact on your life. Enfranchisement for all has been hard-won in America, and we owe it to our forebears to honor their sacrifices by exercising the right and responsibility to vote.”

Sincerely,

Ellen Cohen Houston City Council District C

Houston City Council Member Ellen Cohen is currently serving her first term as the Houston City Council District C representative and will be running for re-election on the November 2013 ballot.

Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams Shares Her Thoughts on The Importance of Participating in Our Local Elections

“Many times, local elections do not receive a high voter turnout rate because individuals feel that those elections are not as important as voting for national elected officials. Voting in local elections is actually more important because it is the best way to have your voice heard immediately. Local elected officials are the individuals who carry-out fiscal mandates, laws, and actions that are created on a national and state level. Citizens should see their local officials working in their communities by the projects that are being completed in their neighborhoods. The Mayor and City Council choose city department leaders who make decisions regarding infrastructure repair, water services, health services, solid waste services, libraries, parks, and many other services that affect everyone living in the city. These elected officials are the public servants that you should see physically working in the community and working for the community. They have vested interests that are parallel to their constituents because they drive your streets daily, visit the parks with their loved ones, receive city services, and live in your neighborhoods. Local officials know your concerns because they share them. If someone isn’t voting in local elections, they are saying that they are not concerned with the issues that matter most – the issues that affect home.”

Sincerely,

Wanda Adams Houston City Council – District D

Houston City Council Member Wanda Adams is currently serving her third and final term as the Houston City Council District D representative. Houston City Council Member Mike Laster Shares his thoughts on the importance of voting in local Elections

“Local elections are important because local government is the foundation of democracy. Your voice is heard the most at the local level and local officials are some of the most accessible and responsive to the voting public. Your daily life is directly affected by local government – from trash pick-up to pot holes to police and fire services to building permits. All of us are called upon to build up our communities and participation in local elections is the most effective way to do that.”

Mike Laster

Sincerely,

Mike Laster Houston City Council District J

Shared Thoughts from Houston City Council District K Council Member Larry V. Green on Why it’s Important for Voters to Participate in Local City-Wide Elections

“It is important for voters to participate in local city-wide elections because elected officials can help determine the economic, educational and social well-being of entire communities. For example, two very important tasks of city council members include making laws and allocating money. Elected officials are the gatekeepers for millions of dollars in tax revenue—that is, money paid by anyone in the public old enough to purchase taxable merchandise, own property, or earn a paycheck. Elected officials control which individuals, groups, communities, businesses, and institutions receive taxpayer dollars, how much they receive, and the purpose for which they can use the money.

Houston City Council Member Mike Laster is currently serving his first-term as the Houston City Council District J representative and will be up for re-election in on the November 2013 Mayoral Election ballot.

Local elected officials are public servants who serve at the pleasure of ordinary citizens—like you and me. For example, in city elections in Houston, every two years voters go to the polls to decide whether their elected officials deserve another term in office. Ultimately, elected officials, including me, are judged by the quality of our leadership. Are we accessible to the public? Do we represent all demographics, rich, poor, everyone? Do we bring money or other resources back to our Districts? Do our decisions or voting record reflect the priorities we promised when asking for your vote?

The policies generated from your participation in local city-wide elections shape almost every aspect of our lives. It is important that voters do not take a back seat in the political decisions that result in these policies. Let your voice be heard by voting in all local citywide elections.”

Drug Testing for Unemployment: Texas State Senator Tommy Williams Testifies before U.S. House Ways and Means Panel Williams joins Congressman Brady in support of drug screening as condition for unemployment compensation

Washington, D.C. – Texas State Senator Tommy Williams, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, recently testified at a House Ways & Means Human Resources Subcommittee hearing in support of allowing states to require drug screening as a condition for receiving unemployment benefits. U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady of Texas, who helped successfully remove a 40-year federal ban on drug screening and testing unemployBRADY ment recipients and allow for the first ever pro-work program waivers during last year’snegotiations on extending federal unemployment benefits, will join Williams at the hearing. Senator Williams has moved bipartisan legislation through the State Senate in Austin, which would require drug screening for some individuals receiving unemployment benefits – a move that Brady strongly supports. “Taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize drug use. If you’re on drugs, you’re not job ready,” said Brady, who leads the Health Subcommittee in Congress. “I applaud the leadership of Senator Williams, and we will continue to push the White House to follow the law and issue regulations on drug testing so that states like Texas can implement the law.” Brady is also a strong advocate of the waiver policy and encouraged Texas state officials to apply for one of ten federal waivers under the pilot program. Subsequently, their initial application was denied by the Department of Labor (DOL), citing a lack of guidelines at the time. Today’s ap-

pearance by Brady at the hearing will be his second. Last year, after DOL finally issued application guidelines, he appeared to question DOL’s Assistant Secretary Jane Oates about the lengthy requirements included in the guidelines, which have since completely stifled all interest in the waiver policy. When questioned last year about what would happen if no state applied for a waiver, DOL’s responded by saying that “after a few months” they would “go back to the drawing board” if the program did not move forward. Brady claims the agency continues to needlessly stall. “Texas has already been recognized by the White House for their innovative ways to get Texans back to work. But again, the White House needs to apply the law and allow states like Texas to continue that innovation when it comes to getting the unemployed back to work making good wages rather than collecting benefit checks.”

ANNOUNCEMENT: STEPHANIE BOUTTE-PHILLIPS TO BE RECOGNIZED AT A SPECIAL EVENT IN JUNE 2013

Businesswoman Stephanie Boutte-Phillips to be Recognized for her dedication and Commitment to the Community in June 2013

Stephanie Boutte-Phillips, Executive Director and Founder of HTEC was inspired to create HTEC as a young woman. Part of her motivation was from her experiences as a single, teenage mother who eventually overcame a myriad of obstacles before reaching educational and professional success as a CPA. Ms. Boutte garnered the support of many local citizens to support her vision for an educational institution which serves low-income, “at-risk” students in Harris County. With the support of an outstanding board of directors and a broad range of community support, the school was opened in June of 1995. Bobby Marshall, Missouri City Councilmember representing District A is running for re-election to the Missouri City Council. “I want to thank the residents of District A for the opportunity to serve them and the citizens of Missouri City. It has been an extreme pleasure and rewarding experience representing the District on the Missouri City Council for the past 4 years. I have enjoyed working hard, serving the citizens, fighting for our neighborhoods and the fundamental principles of fiscal responsibility and open governance.” “Missouri City is consistently being ranked as one of the Safest Cities and Best Places to Live. I want my constituents to continue to have that high quality of life, with good neighborhoods, excellent Police and Fire Protection, exceptional Parks and dependable Water systems. Our completion of the new Recreation and Tennis Center and our new City Centre at Quail Valley greatly increases our City’s amenities to serve our citizens. Our recently completed Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant will ensure the highest level of drinking water for our citizens for decades to come, while our newly expanded Wastewater Treatment Plant at Steep Bank continues to keep capacity ahead of demand. Our Police and Fire Departments are sec-

CONGRATULATIONS

“Aubrey R. Taylor Communications, the publisher of Your Thought Matters Newspaper would like to congratulate Cathy Haney the Director of Municipal Court in Missouri City, Texas. Haney has served with the City of Missouri since 2000 and was Court Administrator prior to serving in her current role as Director of Municipal Court Services. She has also served as Court Administrator with the City of Friendswood. Her accomplishments include her being one of 40 Level III Certified Municipal Court Clerks in the State of Texas and her certification as a Court Manager through the National Center for State Courts’ Institute for Court Management, according to the Missouri City website. But the intent of this announcement is to commend Haney, Mayor Allen Owen, and the entire Governing body in Missouri City for raising more than $70,965 for the city. Check out the information below.” – Aubrey R. Taylor, Publisher

CATHY HANEY: “This is our sixth year participating in the initiative and our successful Warrant Roundup program was a team endeavor,” said Cathy Haney, Director of Municipal Court Services. “It showed us what can be done with a collective approach on the part of the Police Department, Court staff, 911 Dispatch, Communications and Public Works Departments working together to make the effort a success.”

Missouri City Recently Netted More Than $70,965 in Warrant Roundup Says Cathy Haney

Missouri City recently cleared 325 warrants and netted $70,965 during the Great Texas Warrant Roundup from Feb. 16 through March 10. The collections include monies paid for fines, court costs and cash bonds. With the amount of jail time served, known as face value, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $115,569. “This is our sixth year participating in the initiative and our successful Warrant Roundup program was a team endeavor,” said Cathy Haney, Director of Municipal Court Services. “It showed us what can be done with a collective approach on the part of the Police Department, Court staff, 911 Dispatch, Communications and Public Works Departments working together to make the effort a success.”

Haney also added that “our collection vendor, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, did an outstanding job notifying defendants in warrant of the statewide action.” The program lasted two weeks and targeted individuals across Texas who have outstanding warrants for their arrest based upon the defendants’ failure to pay fines for traffic tickets and other misdemeanor crimes. Citizens with outstanding warrants had the opportunity to pay their fines or risk being arrested. Missouri City Municipal Court staff is always looking for innovate ways to help citizens avoid serving jail time. One successful example involves a long-time Court volunteer. Filmore Cohen has worked with the Court for more than 10 years, making friendly phone calls to people, reminding them of their outstanding fines. “He comes to the court office on Fridays and calls defendants who have missed their court date that week,” Haney said. “Once he starts calling, our phones ring off the walls.” About 30 percent of people he speaks with end up contacting the court, she added. Among the payments received this year was for a defendant whose case dated back to 1991 and included charges for failure to appear, no license plate and failure to maintain financial responsibility (no insurance). Overall, the warrant roundup program has been successful in the “Show Me City”. In 2012, Missouri City cleared 400 bonds and netted $81,121 in cash and cash bonds during the Statewide Warrant Roundup, Haney said. With the amount of jail time served, known as face value, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $163,603. Among the payments received was one for a case dating back to 1988. In 2011, the City cleared 381 warrants and netted $86,749, Haney said. The collections include monies paid for fines, court costs and bonds. With the amount of jail time served, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $141,000. Most of the 381 warrants that were resolved involved traffic cases. One notable offense, an alcohol-related case dating back to 1998, was among those cleared. In 2010, the City cleared 281 warrants and netted $63,000, Haney said. Most of the warrants resolved involved traffic offenses, city code violations and school truancies. In addition, several older cases were cleared off the books, allowing the Municipal Court staff to concentrate on newer warrants.

ANNOUNCEMENT

“Aubrey R. Taylor Communications, the publisher of Your Thought Matters Newspaper would like to take this moment to announce the opening of two new facilities in Missouri City, Texas. One of the new openings is the City Center at Quail Valley, and the other is the Missouri City Recreation and Tennis Center. Bond funds and a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association played key roles in funding these two projects. The input of citizens and their feedback also played a key role in the development of these two new fine facilities. Congratulations to Mayor Allen Owen and everyone else who played a role in getting this done.” — Aubrey R. Taylor, Publisher

The City of Missouri City Recently Announced Update on City the Centre at Quail Valley and Recreation and Tennis Center

CONGRATULATIONS: “The City Centre at Quail Valley, located at 2880 La Quinta Dr., hosts weddings, business and community meetings, tournaments, birthday parties and festive occasions. It is also home to The Grille, a casual dining restaurant that serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The Recreation and Tennis Center, located at 2701 Cypress Point Dr., has a full-size gymnasium, a Kid Zone, multi-purpose rooms, tennis courts, batting cages, the latest cardio and weight equipment, an outdoor walking trail and tennis clinics.

In 2008, an overwhelming 72 percent of Missouri City residents voted to approve a $17.5 million bond referendum to fund two essential parks projects—the Quail Valley Golf Course, which includes the City Centre at Quail Valley, and the Recreation and Tennis Center. In addition to the bond funds, the City received a $950,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association for the Recreation and Tennis Center project. We are pleased to report that both new facilities are operational and have received rave reviews from residents and visitors. Citizen input and feedback was integral to the development of the projects.

Here are highlights to date: Quail Valley Golf Course Project

The City took possession of the property in 2008 through eminent domain due to the former owners’ extreme neglect of the property, the concern of its possible sale to developers, the negative effect on property values, and the loss of green space and recreational opportunities. The decline of the maintenance and operation of the property posed detrimental effects on surrounding subdivisions and the City as a whole. Subsequently, there has been a complete renovation of the El Dorado Golf Course, upgrades to the La Quinta Golf Course, repairs of several bridges that were considered safety hazards, the mowing of high grass/removal of weeds/landscaping, and the construction of the City Centre at Quail Valley. All repairs, upgrades, improvements and construction were essential to the operations of the Course. Funding of the project includes $3.1 million to take possession of QVGC through eminent domain, $7.2 million for the complete redesign/construction of the El Dorado course (design, construction - SEE PAGE - 22 management services, materials

OPEN THOUGHT

Election Day Is Saturday, May 11th Dear Missouri City voters,

Although I am running unopposed for Missouri City Council District D the upcoming general election on May 11th is very important to me and to our City. Our City Charter Review Committee recommended 15 modifications to our City Charter. By a unanimous vote the City Council embraced their recommendations which now requires the approval of our citizens on May 11th. Apathy (lack of concern or interest) and complacency (my one vote won’t make a difference) are enemies of an election which can reEMERY sult in low voter turnout and in some cases may produce results contrary to ones position. I encourage you to be involved and vote FOR these changes in addition for your candidate in the important local races. Sincerely,

Floyd Emery Missouri City Council District D

Deirdre Holloway and Vonda Washington named FBISD Principals of the Year for 2013

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD has named its 2013 Principals of the Year. Deirdre Holloway, principal of Blue Ridge Elementary (BRE), is the Elementary Principal of the Year, and Vonda Washington, principal of Christa McAuliffe Middle School (CMMS) is Secondary Principal of the Year. Each year, District principals select an elementary and secondary honoree based on their leadership, service and dedication to students, faculty and staff.

In her six years as BRE principal, Holloway has improved test scores, state rankings and overall student achievement, and she commends her staff for going the “extra mile” for their students. Holloway comes from a family of educators and grew up learning the importance of education. This is her second time to be named FBISD’s Principal of the Year. “I became a principal because I love working with teachers and students,” Holloway said. “I greet students every morning as they walk in the building and visit classrooms weekly, often asking students to explain what they are learning. I also try to build positive relationships with parents that visit the school.” Washington has been the principal at CMMS for three years and strives each day to ensure all of her teachers, students and community stakeholders know that she has a genuine concern for them. Washington will finish her doctorate degree in educational leadership in May. “I make a conscious effort to always be a model for anyone I come in contact with, and I expect my students and teachers to do the same,” said Washington. “As the principal of McAuliffe, I commit to implementing the change necessary for building critical thinkers and problem solvers.”

Candidate Rodney Griffin (right) continues to be a supporter of President Barack Obama (left). Rodney Griffin was the first State (Texas) party official to endorse then candidate Obama for president (Feb, 22, 2007). — The 2013 General Election Day is Saturday, May 11th.

To Missouri City District A:

“I believe, the more things change, the more they are the same. Taxes are higher, vacancies along the Texas Parkway and Cartwright corridors continue to exist. The newly passed “crash tax” as dubbed by CNN, has made our great city, arguably the laughing stock of the world. The esplanades along Texas Parkway, are perceived as turning the parkway into contraflow lanes for the convenience of Highway 6 commuters, and many believe, at the expense of communities of color. This has to stop! No longer take seriously, those who lurk in the shadows of governance, representing no one, but themselves, and who are merely stooges for the rich and powerful! Change comes from the bottom up, never from the top down ( i.e. the Arab Spring, , closer to home, The Affordable Health Care Act (Obama Care)). Having a mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Austin, working at a senior level in a council manager form of government, and running my own business for years makes me uniquely qualified to serve Missouri City and District A.I am a

This does not mean, the politically, or well connected should get the lion share of the contracts, regardless of color! Hire those who can and will do the job. They are out there. Pres. Obama Speaks on the Explosions in Boston

In his statement, President explained that he had been briefed by his Homeland Security team, who are continuing to monitor the situation as it unfolds, and had “directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.” “The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight,” he said. “And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.” We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake — we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we’ll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full OBAMA weight of justice. Today is a holiday in Massachusetts — Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I’m supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way. You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We’re still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.

“So sad to hear about the senseless tragedy in Boston. I am sending prayers, love and light to all affected and their families. Dear God - bless, strengthen, comfort, heal. Amen.”

BOSTON BOMBINGS: “We can try and wear blinders when it comes to evil around us but God knows how to remove the blinders, bring us together to call on Him in times like these!”

“When it comes to jobs, America’s economic “growth gap” has economists fearing our nation has fallen into a new substandard economic norm and Main Street wondering just how much those dollars in the cash register are worth today. In the weakest economic recovery since World War II, businesses and workers need to know that every hard-earned dollar received this week is worth the same as it was last week. For America to be the strongest economy in the world throughout the 21st Century, Americans need to be involved in the process at all levels – from their local city councils, to their state houses, to Congress. And because it affects our economy from Main Street to Wall Street, Washington needs to get the role of the Federal Reserve right. I have filed two pieces of legislation that protect our dollar and I’m pleased that dozens of my colleagues have signed on in support. The Sound Dollar Act reforms the Federal Reserve and the Centennial Monetary Commission Act analyzes the Fed’s first 100 years. I believe we must reign the Fed back to a single mandate of price stability and open the door for the regional Fed offices – like Texas’ – to have as much say as Washington and Wall Street. All voices of the U.S. economy must be heard and Americans must be confident the Fed is operating in the best interests of the nation. There’s a lot we need to get right – government spending, tax BRADY codes and regulations. Not to mention the need to ensure that essential programs like Social Security and Medicare are solvent for future generations. Protecting our dollar is equally important. The bottom line - we need a strong foundation that creates jobs and grows an economy built to last. That’s what we get with a sound dollar and stable prices.”

Kevin Brady United States Representative 8th Congressional District of Texas

“It’s been nearly twelve years since the terrible terrorist attacks of 9-11. While we don’t yet know the source, the Boston Marathon bombing yesterday is a stark reminder that America remains a target of terrorism - whether it be from foreign or domestic sources. As a nation are we as vigilant as we can be? What else, if anything, can be done to prevent attacks at public events like this?”

mand for choices in housing continues to grow, Houston is helping to lead the nation in new apartment construction and related jobs. This growth may not have been possible without a positive regulatory environment, a prudent fiscal approach to governance and leadership from Mayor Parker. “Communities across the country are starting to realize what Houston has known for years – that people want to live in the home that is right for them,” Hunt continued. “For the more than one million Houstonians who rent their housing, that home is often an apartment. Mayor Parker ensures that renters, and the more than 38,000 apartment industry professionals who serve them, have a voice at City Hall. The Mayor’s commitment to safe, affordable housing options for Houstonians has provided the necessary climate for growth as our community attracts industry and jobs.” “I thank the Houston Apartment Association and the Better Government Fund for this endorsement,” said Mayor Parker. “As Houston continues to be the job creation capital of the country, the need for housing will continue to grow and I know the members of the Apartment Association will continue to be our good partners in providing safe, affordable housing options.” The Houston Apartment Association is a professional trade association that serves individuals and businesses involved in the ownership, construction, management, maintenance and operation of apartments and other rental dwellings in the Houston area. “The city remains safe and well protected while other major cities struggle to deal with a soaring crime rate,” continued Nielsen, “and the mayor has done all this without putting the city financially in the red or raising the property tax rate. We think that Mayor Parker has earned herself another term.” “My sincere thanks to the Houston Contractors Association for their endorsement and their continuing support of our city,” said Mayor Parker. “In my administration, I have focused on the need to upgrade our infrastructure to support the continued growth of our city and the new businesses that are moving here, making Houston the job-creation capitol of the country. “The HCA was the original partner in the city’s Demolition Day,” added Parker. “Each year their members donate their services to demolish dangerous and abandoned buildings that provide havens for criminals and lower property values.” Formed in 1956 by a small group of local contractors, the Houston Contractors Association (HCA) has grown into the preeminent organization representing civil construction companies in the greater Houston area. Its members represent the finest that this industry has to offer, not only in the quality of their service, but also the character of their person. HCA has over 400 members that perform over $2 billion worth of work and services annually and form the backbone of the civil construction industry in this region. HCA works closely with the State of Texas, Harris County, the City of Houston, METRO, the Port of Houston Authority, Harris County Toll Road Authority, Flood Control and every other County and municipality in the greater eight county region. Its members have done the majority of private work in the area as well. Working closely with private developers and Municipal Utility Districts (MUD’s), its work has allowed the new home industry in Houston to flourish over the last several decades. --------------------------------------------------

Houston Mayor Annise Parker has received the endorsement of the Houston Contractors Association for her re-election to a third term. “The Houston Contractors Association is proud to endorse and support Mayor Parker in her race for a third term in office,” said Executive Vice President Jeffrey Nielsen. “The Mayor has successfully led the City of Houston through the most challenging financial times this city has faced in the last 30 years. She has been a strong advocate for improving this city’s basic infrastructure, such as water and sewer service, drainage and street repair.

Mayor Parker

Houston Mayor Annise Parker has received the endorsement of the Houston Police Officers’ Union (HPOU) Political Action Committee. HPOU officials praised Parker’s commitment to public safety. “Mayor Parker inherited a budget with a significant shortfall and she also inherited a bad economy,” said Ray Hunt, HPOU President. “Yet she promised the Houston Police Department would not lose officers and she has kept her word. Hiring has kept up with attrition and the Mayor exceeded her promise.” In addition, Hunt praised Mayor Parker for choosing a capable chief, Charles McClelland, from within the department. “Our Chief’s door and the Mayor’s door have always been open for HPOU to talk about issues,” said Hunt. The Mayor commended Houston police officers for their hard work making the city safe. “Houston is moving in the right direction — and our men and women in blue are a big part of the reason why,” said Parker. “That’s why I am so honored to have the support of the Houston Police Officers Union.” “Public safety is the foundation of our strong economy and our high quality of life,” the Mayor continued. “We’ve made great strides working hand-inhand with our police officers and civilian safety employees to keep our city safe.” Among the accomplishments cited by Parker that have resulted from their work together are:

• A decrease in Houston’s crime rate • Maintaining police force levels during the recession to keep Houston safe • A plan to send current and backlogged sexual assault kits to outside labs to bring testing up to date, which will allow the Crime Lab to focus on DNA tests in other crimes • Working with other city departments to help identify and demolish dangerous abandoned buildings that serve as havens for criminals and participating in the new Make Safe Saturdays program, which is targeting blighted properties in neighborhoods • Reaching a contract with Police officers until 2015 and with the police pension system until 2023 ---------------------------------------------------
