Prostate Cancer FACTS:

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed “male cancer” in America. The U.S. has the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world. In fact, it’s 15 times that of Asia, including Japan, China, and India. World-renowned doctors have avowed prostate cancer is a disease of the West, largely brought about by “Western lifestyle.”

Prostate Cancer: Not Just An Old Man’s Cancer

Gabe Canales was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 35. He hadn’t given any thought to prostate cancer nor did he have any knowledge about prostate cancer before his diagnosis. He was not educated on the role of the prostate, prostate health, prostate cancer and prostate cancer prevention. He soon found the same ignorance among his male friends in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Gabe had no family history of prostate cancer or any other cancer, but at the time of his diagnosis, Gabe had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a high body fat percentage, as well as a strong family history of chronic health diseases like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. What was the connection? Once Gabe was diagnosed, he didn’t know where to turn to for resources or support. After meeting with doctors and plunging into research, Gabe started getting educated on the carcinogens (cancer causing agents) all around us in everyday life. He also began questioning the role of chemicals and agents in our foods, such as hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and larvicides. He grew leery of genetically modified foods, the pollution in our air, household contaminants, body care products, the chemicals in our water, dry cleaning, sofas, mattresses and the chemicals all around us. All these unnatural causes with clear preventions underscored the catastrophic neglect involved in one out of two American men and one out of three American women being diagnosed with cancer — cancer from which one in four will die. This must stop — and this can stop. We’ve allowed cancer to become our “new normal” – the winner- for far too long by continuing to place focus on treatment and cures, with little regard for steps that can be taken and proven prevention.

We’re Beyond “Awareness”

There’s a huge difference between creating awareness and changing the way people think. Many cancer nonprofits have awareness campaigns, but we’re already well aware of the word “cancer,” and many men have heard the words “prostate cancer.” The urgent need isn’t for such awareness but for changing the way people <em >think about prostate cancer. We must advocate for more research on prevention so we may have definitive answers on causes of cancers, as well as what we add or subtract to diet and lifestyle to reduce cancers and enhance outcomes for those diagnosed with cancer. That’s why Blue Cure advocates increased funding for prevention research in the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget. In view of America’s dramatic rise in obesity, the enormous spike in youths’ chronic health woes and the shameful reduced funding for physical education in schools, Blue Cure aims to reach younger men with an urgent message of prevention. To do so, Blue Cure will partner with city leaders, school districts and colleges across the country. “I remember voting as a kid with my parents. That was back in the days when you walked into a voting booth, pulled a red curtain behind you, picked your candidates and pulled a lever to cast your ballot. My parents took me every November, and I’ve gone every year as an adult. It’s important to vote for many reasons, but I’ll focus on three.

1) It’s the only opportunity we have, as citizens, to hold our elected officials accountable to the promises they make to us when they’re running for office. I’ve been elected eight times now, so I know that when I make a promise on the campaign trail, voters are listening, and voters will remind me of my promises when I come back in two years.

I was raised to believe that democracy means “one person, one vote,” and that exercising your vote is a responsibility as well as a right. In Houston, though voter turnout in our last national election (2012) was above 60%, unfortunately, in our last local election (2011) turnout was less than 15%. This is particularly regrettable because all politics is local. Local government is responsible for the most immediate concerns of our citizens’ daily lives. From streets to parks to libraries to water, your local government officials make or influence the policy decisions that impact our lives. Drug Testing for Unemployment: Texas State Senator Tommy Williams Testifies before U.S. House Ways and Means Panel Williams joins Congressman Brady in support of drug screening as condition for unemployment compensation

Washington, D.C. – Texas State Senator Tommy Williams, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, recently testified at a House Ways & Means Human Resources Subcommittee hearing in support of allowing states to require drug screening as a condition for receiving unemployment benefits. U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady of Texas, who helped successfully remove a 40-year federal ban on drug screening and testing unemployBRADY ment recipients and allow for the first ever pro-work program waivers during last year’snegotiations on extending federal unemployment benefits, will join Williams at the hearing. Senator Williams has moved bipartisan legislation through the State Senate in Austin, which would require drug screening for some individuals receiving unemployment benefits – a move that Brady strongly supports. “Taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize drug use. If you’re on drugs, you’re not job ready,” said Brady, who leads the Health Subcommittee in Congress. “I applaud the leadership of Senator Williams, and we will continue to push the White House to follow the law and issue regulations on drug testing so that states like Texas can implement the law.” Brady is also a strong advocate of the waiver policy and encouraged Texas state officials to apply for one of ten federal waivers under the pilot program. Subsequently, their initial application was denied by the Department of Labor (DOL), citing a lack of guidelines at the time. Today’s ap-

pearance by Brady at the hearing will be his second. Last year, after DOL finally issued application guidelines, he appeared to question DOL’s Assistant Secretary Jane Oates about the lengthy requirements included in the guidelines, which have since completely stifled all interest in the waiver policy. When questioned last year about what would happen if no state applied for a waiver, DOL’s responded by saying that “after a few months” they would “go back to the drawing board” if the program did not move forward. Brady claims the agency continues to needlessly stall. “Texas has already been recognized by the White House for their innovative ways to get Texans back to work. But again, the White House needs to apply the law and allow states like Texas to continue that innovation when it comes to getting the unemployed back to work making good wages rather than collecting benefit checks.”

Gov. Perry Appoints Five to Texas School Safety Center Board

Gov. Rick Perry has appointed five members to the Texas School Safety Center Board for terms to expire Feb. 1, 2015. The board promotes safety throughout the state and advises the Texas School Safety Center in San Marcos, which provides school safety information and resources for the prevention of youth violence. Barbara Beto of Round Rock is a substitute teacher for the Round Rock Independent School District (ISD). Montoya received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education administration from the University of New Mexico, and a doctorate of education administration from New Mexico State University. He is being reappointed. Adelaida Olivares of Austin is principal of Cedar Creek High School in Bastrop ISD. She is a member of the Texas Association of Secondary Principals and Council of School Supervisors and Administrators Principals Institute, and a past member of the Texas Education Agency Educator Leadership Council. She is also the 2009-2010 recipient of the Milken Educator Award. FBISD Students learn Soccer Moves from Houston Dynamo

FORT BEND ISD - Heritage Rose Elementary School hosted a free soccer clinic with the Houston Dynamo soccer team, welcoming more than 50 Fort Bend ISD students in grades 1-5. The clinic helped promote the Dynamo Youth Programs’ efforts in helping youth lead a more active lifestyle, while teaching students the fundamentals of soccer. Parents watched along the sidelines as students learned how to dribble and drop kick a soccer ball, score a goal, and other techniques of the game. Tyenise Blackmon, HRE Parent Center Coordinator, joined Stephanie Kellam, UnitedHealthcare Student Wellness Coordinator, on providing parents with information on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Parents received healthy recipes and material on eating healthy on a budget. Event coordinators also raffled Dynamo game tickets and Kroger gift cards. “This was the first time that the Houston Dynamos have offered something like this in our District,” said Blackmon. “They were very eager to form a more active partnership with us, and we were excited to be allowed this opportunity.”

Missouri City Recently Netted More Than $70,965 in Warrant Roundup Says Cathy Haney

Missouri City recently cleared 325 warrants and netted $70,965 during the Great Texas Warrant Roundup from Feb. 16 through March 10. The collections include monies paid for fines, court costs and cash bonds. With the amount of jail time served, known as face value, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $115,569. “This is our sixth year participating in the initiative and our successful Warrant Roundup program was a team endeavor,” said Cathy Haney, Director of Municipal Court Services. “It showed us what can be done with a collective approach on the part of the Police Department, Court staff, 911 Dispatch, Communications and Public Works Departments working together to make the effort a success.”

Haney also added that “our collection vendor, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, did an outstanding job notifying defendants in warrant of the statewide action.” The program lasted two weeks and targeted individuals across Texas who have outstanding warrants for their arrest based upon the defendants’ failure to pay fines for traffic tickets and other misdemeanor crimes. Citizens with outstanding warrants had the opportunity to pay their fines or risk being arrested. Missouri City Municipal Court staff is always looking for innovate ways to help citizens avoid serving jail time. One successful example involves a long-time Court volunteer. Filmore Cohen has worked with the Court for more than 10 years, making friendly phone calls to people, reminding them of their outstanding fines. “He comes to the court office on Fridays and calls defendants who have missed their court date that week,” Haney said. “Once he starts calling, our phones ring off the walls.” About 30 percent of people he speaks with end up contacting the court, she added. Among the payments received this year was for a defendant whose case dated back to 1991 and included charges for failure to appear, no license plate and failure to maintain financial responsibility (no insurance). Overall, the warrant roundup program has been successful in the “Show Me City”. In 2012, Missouri City cleared 400 bonds and netted $81,121 in cash and cash bonds during the Statewide Warrant Roundup, Haney said. With the amount of jail time served, known as face value, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $163,603. Among the payments received was one for a case dating back to 1988. In 2011, the City cleared 381 warrants and netted $86,749, Haney said. The collections include monies paid for fines, court costs and bonds. With the amount of jail time served, the City’s roundup effort totaled more than $141,000. Most of the 381 warrants that were resolved involved traffic cases. One notable offense, an alcohol-related case dating back to 1998, was among those cleared. In 2010, the City cleared 281 warrants and netted $63,000, Haney said. Most of the warrants resolved involved traffic offenses, city code violations and school truancies. In addition, several older cases were cleared off the books, allowing the Municipal Court staff to concentrate on newer warrants.

The City of Missouri City Recently Announced Update on City the Centre at Quail Valley and Recreation and Tennis Center

CONGRATULATIONS: “The City Centre at Quail Valley, located at 2880 La Quinta Dr., hosts weddings, business and community meetings, tournaments, birthday parties and festive occasions. It is also home to The Grille, a casual dining restaurant that serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The Recreation and Tennis Center, located at 2701 Cypress Point Dr., has a full-size gymnasium, a Kid Zone, multi-purpose rooms, tennis courts, batting cages, the latest cardio and weight equipment, an outdoor walking trail and tennis clinics.

In 2008, an overwhelming 72 percent of Missouri City residents voted to approve a $17.5 million bond referendum to fund two essential parks projects—the Quail Valley Golf Course, which includes the City Centre at Quail Valley, and the Recreation and Tennis Center. In addition to the bond funds, the City received a $950,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association for the Recreation and Tennis Center project. We are pleased to report that both new facilities are operational and have received rave reviews from residents and visitors. Citizen input and feedback was integral to the development of the projects.

Here are highlights to date: Quail Valley Golf Course Project

The City took possession of the property in 2008 through eminent domain due to the former owners’ extreme neglect of the property, the concern of its possible sale to developers, the negative effect on property values, and the loss of green space and recreational opportunities. The decline of the maintenance and operation of the property posed detrimental effects on surrounding subdivisions and the City as a whole. Subsequently, there has been a complete renovation of the El Dorado Golf Course, upgrades to the La Quinta Golf Course, repairs of several bridges that were considered safety hazards, the mowing of high grass/removal of weeds/landscaping, and the construction of the City Centre at Quail Valley. All repairs, upgrades, improvements and construction were essential to the operations of the Course. Deirdre Holloway and Vonda Washington named FBISD Principals of the Year for 2013

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD has named its 2013 Principals of the Year. Deirdre Holloway, principal of Blue Ridge Elementary (BRE), is the Elementary Principal of the Year, and Vonda Washington, principal of Christa McAuliffe Middle School (CMMS) is Secondary Principal of the Year. Each year, District principals select an elementary and secondary honoree based on their leadership, service and dedication to students, faculty and staff.

In her six years as BRE principal, Holloway has improved test scores, state rankings and overall student achievement, and she commends her staff for going the “extra mile” for their students. Holloway comes from a family of educators and grew up learning the importance of education. This is her second time to be named FBISD’s Principal of the Year. “I became a principal because I love working with teachers and students,” Holloway said. “I greet students every morning as they walk in the building and visit classrooms weekly, often asking students to explain what they are learning. I also try to build positive relationships with parents that visit the school.” Washington has been the principal at CMMS for three years and strives each day to ensure all of her teachers, students and community stakeholders know that she has a genuine concern for them. Washington will finish her doctorate degree in educational leadership in May. “I make a conscious effort to always be a model for anyone I come in contact with, and I expect my students and teachers to do the same,” said Washington. “As the principal of McAuliffe, I commit to implementing the change necessary for building critical thinkers and problem solvers.”

In his statement, President explained that he had been briefed by his Homeland Security team, who are continuing to monitor the situation as it unfolds, and had “directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.” “The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight,” he said. “And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.” We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake — we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we’ll find out why they did this. In the weakest economic recovery since World War II, businesses and workers need to know that every hard-earned dollar received this week is worth the same as it was last week. For America to be the strongest economy in the world throughout the 21st Century, Americans need to be involved in the process at all levels – from their local city councils, to their state houses, to Congress. And because it affects our economy from Main Street to Wall Street, Washington needs to get the role of the Federal Reserve right. I have filed two pieces of legislation that protect our dollar and I’m pleased that dozens of my colleagues have signed on in support. The Sound Dollar Act reforms the Federal Reserve and the Centennial Monetary Commission Act analyzes the Fed’s first 100 years. I believe we must reign the Fed back to a single mandate of price stability and open the door for the regional Fed offices – like Texas’ – to have as much say as Washington and Wall Street. All voices of the U.S. economy must be heard and Americans must be confident the Fed is operating in the best interests of the nation. There’s a lot we need to get right – government spending, tax BRADY codes and regulations. Not to mention the need to ensure that essential programs like Social Security and Medicare are solvent for future generations. Protecting our dollar is equally important. The bottom line - we need a strong foundation that creates jobs and grows an economy built to last. That’s what we get with a sound dollar and stable prices.”
